Incoming Chinese students in the Spanish university system have resulted in an increase in the number of academic certificates received by the academic administration used to decide on students' admission. These certificates usually include a 'notarized translation' done in China. This article is based on a bilingual corpus of 30 certificates issued in Chinese with their respective Spanish translations authenticated by means of notarial testimonies. Using this corpus, we have conducted an exhaustive contrastive analysis of the translations with their originals, paying attention to four dimensions –microtextual aspects, paratextual aspects, macrostructure and superstructure– and also considering the differences in the legislative context of the notarial procedure in China and in Spain. The results of the analysis have been used to discuss the relatively poor quality of the translations, both in terms of content and formal aspects, and the problems that may be caused by the errors identified.
