Abstract

ANTARES is a high-energy neutrino telescope installed in the Mediterranean Sea at a depth of 2475 m. It consists of a three-dimensional array of optical modules, each containing a large photomultiplier tube. A total of 2700 front-end ASICs named Analogue Ring Samplers (ARS) process the phototube signals, measure their arrival time, amplitude and shape as well as perform monitoring and calibration tasks. The ARS chip processes the analogue signals from the optical modules and converts information into digital data. All the information is transmitted to shore through further multiplexing electronics and an optical link. Abstract

AMADEUS is a system designed to investigate the method of acoustic particle detection for high energy neutrinos and the acoustic environment in the deep sea as part of the ANTARES neutrino telescope. In this context, six local clusters of six acoustic sensors each were integrated into the ANTARES infrastructure. The first three clusters have been taking data since December 2007 and the second three since the completion of ANTARES in May 2008. In the paper, the methods used for the on-line triggering and filtering of the data acquired with the AMADEUS set-up are described. On-shore, a dedicated computer-cluster is used to control the off-shore DAQ hardware, to process and store the acoustic data arriving from the sensors. On this cluster different data filtering schemes and triggers are implemented. Transient signals are selected by a variable threshold, which is self-adjusting to the changing conditions of the deep sea. For bipolar pulses—the characteristic acoustic signature of a neutrino—a pattern recognition is used based on cross-correlating the output of the sensors with a pre-defined bipolar pulse. To study the characteristics of the ambient noise in the deep sea an amount of unfiltered data is stored in regular intervals.

Abstract

The ANTARES deep-sea neutrino telescope comprises a three-dimensional array of photomultipliers to detect the Cherenkov light induced by upgoing relativistic charged particles originating from neutrino interactions in the vicinity of the detector. The large scattering length of light in the deep sea facilitates an angular resolution of a few tenths of a degree for neutrino energies exceeding 10 TeV. In order to achieve this optimal performance, the time calibration procedures should ensure a relative time calibration between the photomultipliers at the level of ~1 ns. Abstract

The faint fluxes of cosmic neutrinos expected at very high energies require large instrumented detector volumes. The necessary volumes in combination with a sufficient shielding against background constitute forbidding and complex environments (e.g. the deep sea) as sites for neutrino telescopes. To withstand these environments and to assure the data quality, the sensors have to be reliable and their operation has to be as simple as possible. A compact sensor module design including all necessary components for data acquisition and module calibration would simplify the detector mechanics and ensures the long term operability of the detector. The compact design discussed here combines optical and acoustical sensors inside one module, therefore reducing electronics and additional external instruments for calibration purposes. In this design the acoustical sensor is primary used for acoustic positioning of the module. The module may also be used for acoustic particle detection and marine science if an appropriate acoustical sensor is chosen. First tests of this design are promising concerning the task of calibration. To expand the field of application also towards acoustic particle detection further improvements concerning electromagnetic shielding and adaptation of the single components are necessary., Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures, ARENA2010 proceedings

Abstract

This article focuses on signal classification for deep-sea acoustic neutrino detection. In the deep sea, the background of transient signals is very diverse. Approaches like matched filtering are not sufficient to distinguish between neutrino-like signals and other transient signals with similar signature, which are forming the acoustic background for neutrino detection in the deep-sea environment. A classification system based on machine learning algorithms is analysed with the goal to find a robust and effective way to perform this task. For a well-trained model, a testing error on the level of one percent is achieved for strong classifiers like Random Forest and Boosting Trees using the extracted features of the signal as input and utilising dense clusters of sensors instead of single sensors., Comment: 8 Pages, 6 Figures, ARENA 2010 Conference Proceedings

8. Experimentelle Untersuchungen zur Gemischverdampfung und -kondensation an Rippenrohrbündelwärmeübertragern

Abstract

Im Rahmen des Forschungsprojekts !nnovA wird der Einsatz von Rippenrohren bei der Verdampfung und Kondensation von Gemischen experimentell erforscht. Das Ziel dabei ist die Bewertung von innovativen Apparaten aus industriellen Produktionsprozessen sowie die Bereitstellung von experimentell abgesicherten Dimensionierungsgrundlagen. Im Laufe dieses Projektes wurden zunachst bei Hochschulen Laboruntersuchungen an Einzelrohren mit glatter und berippter Oberflache durchgefuhrt. Zur Sicherstellung der geometrischen Ubertragbarkeit der Laborergebnisse fur die verfahrenstechnische Anwendung wurden bei der Fa. Linde Technikumsversuche an zwei Rohrbundelwarmeubertragern, wie sie auch in industriellen Anlagen zum Einsatz kommen, durchgefuhrt: zum einen ein Kesselverdampfer und zum anderen ein liegender Verflussiger, beide mit niederberippten Stahlrohren GEWA K-30 der Fa. Wieland. Als Arbeitsmittel wurde zunachst reines n-Pentan eingesetzt. Im Anschluss darauf wurde das binare Kohlewasserstoffgemisch n-Pentan/iso-Octan bei einer Ausgangszusammensetzung von 80mol% n-Pentan eingesetzt. Die Versuche wurden bei Drucken von ca. 1,4 bis 5,2 bar und bei Temperaturen von 40 °C bis 100 °C durchgefuhrt. Der Lastbereich wurde dabei von 40 bis 280 kW variiert, die entsprechende Flachenbelastung betrug ca. 4 bis 30 kW pro m glatte Ausenflache. Der Schwerpunkt der Scale-up-Untersuchungen lag auf dem Einfluss von Anreicherungsprozessen auf den Warmeubergang. Um die produktseitige Temperatur innerhalb der Apparate zu erfassen, wurde eine faseroptische Temperaturmessung mittels Lichtwellenleitern aus Quarzglas eingesetzt. In den Versuchen mit dem Gemisch n-Pentan/i-Octan zeigte sich eine Konzentrationsverschiebung in axialer Richtung bei beiden Apparaten. Im Kesselverdampfer trotz interner Umwalzung reicherte sich die Flussigkeit entlang der Verdampfungsstrecke mit Schwersiedenden an. Im Kondensator reicherte sich der Dampf entlang der Kondensationsstrecke mit Leichtsiedenden an. Die lokal unterschiedlichen Flussigkeitsund Dampfzusammensetzungen fuhrten jeweils zu einer Verringerung der zur Verfugung stehenden treibenden Temperaturdifferenz in axialer Richtung und somit zu einer im Vergleich zu den Versuchen mit dem Reinstoff n-Pentan deutlichen Verringerung der Apparateleistung. Bei den Laboruntersuchungen am Einzelrohr traten derartige Anreicherungsprozesse entlang der Heizflache nicht auf. Das bedeutet wichtige Erkenntnisse fur die Validierung der Ubertragbarkeit vom Laborauf industriellen Masstab.

Abstract

Phantom breast syndrome (PBS) developed in 11 out of 31 (35.5%) consecutive young women, who had undergone mastectomy for breast cancer. Six to 21 months after operation the patients were asked to take part in a follow-up investigation in which physical sequelae, social condition, and psychological reactions were assessed and related to the presence of PBS. There was no correlation between PBS and postsurgical physical sequelae, those who had received adjuvant radiotherapy, or the side on which mastectomy was performed. Socially, the group with PBS was dominated by women with an occupation outside the home. The psychological examination showed that the group with PBS had a definite predominance of women with a severely damaged body image and impaired sexual function in comparison to the group without PBS. However, the predominance did not reach a statistically significant level. Sexual identity, anxiety, affective disorder or changes in close family relationships did not reveal any distinct pattern. In our opinion, the appearance of PBS should be seen in relation to complex psychological reactions to the mastectomy.

Abstract

Thirteen survivors of cardiac arrest outside the hospital were examined by clinical and psychological tests 1-3 years after the incidence, and compared to a matched control group of 13 patients with acute myocardial infarction without cardiac arrest. Psychological tests revealed that 7 patients with previous cardiac arrest and 4 control patients had mild-moderate to moderate-severe dementia. The demential symptoms were not detectable by a clinical interview. Four patients in each group exhibited pronounced anxiety symptoms. There were no clear differences between the two groups in respect of changes in cardiac function and social status after the incidence.

Abstract

Magnetic monopoles are predicted in various unified gauge models and could be produced at intermediate mass scales. Their detection in a neutrino telescope is facilitated by the large amount of light emitted compared to that from muons. This paper reports on a search for upgoing relativistic magnetic monopoles with the ANTARES neutrino telescope using a data set of 116 days of live time taken from December 2007 to December 2008.
