A number of studies based on data collected by the $\textit{Hubble Space Telescope}$ ($\textit{HST}$) GO-13297 program "HST Legacy Survey of Galactic Globular Clusters: Shedding UV Light on Their Populations and Formation" have investigated the photometric properties of a large sample of Galactic globular clusters and revolutionized our understanding of their stellar populations. In this paper, we expand previous studies by focusing our attention on the stellar clusters' internal kinematics. We computed proper motions for stars in 56 globular and one open clusters by combining the GO-13297 images with archival $\textit{HST}$ data. The astro-photometric catalogs released with this paper represent the most complete and homogeneous collection of proper motions of stars in the cores of stellar clusters to date, and expand the information provided by the current (and future) $\textit{Gaia}$ data releases to much fainter stars and into the crowded central regions. We also census the general kinematic properties of stellar clusters by computing the velocity-dispersion and anisotropy radial profiles of their bright members. We study the dependence on concentration and relaxation time, and derive dynamical distances. We use 10 orbits of Advanced Camera for Surveys observations to reach the end of the white dwarf cooling sequence in the solar-metallicity open cluster NGC 2158. Our photometry and completeness tests show that the end falls at magnitude m_F606W = 27.5 +/- 0.15, which implies an age between ~1.8 and ~2.0 Gyr, consistent with the age of 1.9 +/- 0.2 Gyr obtained from fits to the main-sequence turn-off. The faintest white dwarfs show a clear turn toward bluer colors, as predicted by theoretical isochrones., 12 pages, 4 figures (2 in low resolution, and 1 bonus for astro-ph-only). We present new observations of the white dwarf sequence of the old open cluster NGC 6791. The brighter peak previously observed in the white dwarf luminosity function (WDLF) is now better delineated, and the second, fainter peak that we suggested earlier is now confirmed. A careful study suggests that we have reached the end of the white dwarf sequence. The WDs that create the two peaks in the WDLF show a significant turn to the blue in the color-magnitude diagram. The discrepancy between the age from the WDs and that from the main sequence turnoff remains, and we have an additional puzzle in the second peak in the WDLF. Canonical WD models seem to fail --at least at ~25%-level-- in reproducing the age of clusters of this metallicity. We discuss briefly possible ways of arriving at a theoretical understanding of the WDLF.

We present the CMD from deep HST imaging in the globular cluster NGC 6397. The ACS was used for 126 orbits to image a single field in two colors (F814W, F606W) 5 arcmin SE of the cluster center. The field observed overlaps that of archival WFPC2 data from 1994 and 1997 which were used to proper motion (PM) clean the data. Applying the PM corrections produces a remarkably clean CMD which reveals a number of features never seen before in a globular cluster CMD. In our field, the main sequence stars appeared to terminate close to the location in the CMD of the hydrogen-burning limit predicted by two independent sets of stellar evolution models. The faintest observed main sequence stars are about a magnitude fainter than the least luminous metal-poor field halo stars known, suggesting that the lowest luminosity halo stars still await discovery. At the bright end the data extend beyond the main sequence turnoff to well up the giant branch. A populous white dwarf cooling sequence is also seen in the cluster CMD. The most dramatic features of the cooling sequence are its turn to the blue at faint magnitudes as well as an apparent truncation near F814W = 28. The cluster luminosity and mass functions were derived, stretching from the turn off down to the hydrogen-burning limit. It was well modeled with either a very flat power-law or a lognormal function. In order to interpret these fits more fully we compared them with similar functions in the cluster core and with a full N-body model of NGC 6397 finding satisfactory agreement between the model predictions and the data. This exercise demonstrates the important role and the effect that dynamics has played in altering the cluster IMF.

We describe here the reduction methods that we developed to study the faintest red dwarfs and white dwarfs in an outer field of NGC6397, which was observed by \hst for 126 orbits in 2005. The particular challenge of this data set is that the faintest stars are not readily visible in individual exposures, so special care must be taken to combine the information in all the exposures in order to identify and measure them. Unfortunately, it is hard to find the faintest stars without also finding a large number of faint galaxies, so we developed specialized tools to distinguish between the point-like stars and the barely resolved galaxies. We found that artificial-star tests, while obviously necessary for completeness determination, can also play an important role in helping us optimize our finding and measuring algorithms. Although this paper focuses on this data set specifically, many of the techniques are new and might find application in other work, particularly when a large number of images is available for a single field.

We present the results of a deep Hubble Space Telescope (HST) exposure of the nearby globular cluster NGC6397, focussing attention on the cluster's white dwarf cooling sequence. This sequence is shown to extend over 5 magnitudes in depth, with an apparent cutoff at magnitude F814W=27.6. We demonstrate, using both artificial star tests and the detectability of background galaxies at fainter magnitudes, that the cutoff is real and represents the truncation of the white dwarf luminosity function in this cluster. We perform a detailed comparison between cooling models and the observed distribution of white dwarfs in colour and magnitude, taking into account uncertainties in distance, extinction, white dwarf mass, progenitor lifetimes, binarity and cooling model uncertainties. After marginalising over these variables, we obtain values for the cluster distance modulus and age of \mu_0 = 12.02 \pm 0.06 and T_c = 11.47 \pm 0.47Gyr (95% confidence limits). Our inferred distance and white dwarf initial-final mass relations are in good agreement with other independent determinations, and the cluster age is consistent with, but more precise than, prior determinations made using the main sequence turnoff method. In particular, within the context of the currently accepted \Lambda CDM cosmological model, this age places the formation of NGC6397 at a redshift z=3, at a time when the cosmological star formation rate was approaching its peak., Comment: 56 pages, 30 figures

We present new Hubble Space Telescope photometry of the massive globular cluster M54 (NGC 6715) and the superposed core of the tidally disrupted Sagittarius (Sgr) dSph galaxy as part of the ACS Survey of Galactic Globular Clusters. Our deep (F606W~26.5), high-precision photometry yields an unprecedentedly detailed color-magnitude diagram showing the extended blue horizontal branch and multiple main sequences of the M54+Sgr system. The distance and reddening to M54 are revised usingboth isochrone and main-sequence fitting to (m-M)_0=17.27 and E(B-V)=0.15. Preliminary assessment finds the M54+Sgr field to be dominated by the old metal-poor populations of Sgr and the globular cluster. Multiple turnoffs indicate the presence of at least two intermediate-aged star formation epochs with 4 and 6 Gyr ages and [Fe/H]=-0.4 to -0.6. We also clearly show, for the first time, a prominent, 2.3 Gyr old Sgr population of near-solar abundance. A trace population of even younger (0.1-0.8 Gyr old), more metal-rich ([Fe/H]\sim0.6) stars is also indicated. Although the overall dynamics of globular clusters involves many complexities, much of their dynamics can be understood on the basis of some simple and straightforward physical arguments. Those arguments are presented here, in an effort to lead the reader through the basic stages of cluster dynamics in a quick and easy way.

Accurate photometry with HST/ACS shows that the main sequence of the globular cluster NGC 2808 splits into three separate branches. The three MS branches may be associated with complexities of the cluster's horizontal branch and of its abundance distribution. We attribute the MS branches to successive rounds of star formation, with different helium abundances; we discuss possible sources of helium enrichment. NGC 6397 is the second closest globular star cluster to the Sun. Using 5 days of time on the Hubble Space Telescope, we have constructed the deepest ever color-magnitude diagram for this cluster. We see a clear truncation in each of its two major stellar sequences. Faint red main sequence stars run out well above our observational limit and near to the theoretical prediction for the lowest mass stars capable of stable hydrogen-burning in their cores. We also see a truncation in the number counts of faint blue stars, namely white dwarfs. This reflects the limit to which the bulk of the white dwarfs can cool over the lifetime of the cluster. There is also a turn towards bluer colors in the least luminous of these objects. This was predicted for the very coolest white dwarfs with hydrogen-rich atmospheres as the formation of H2 causes their atmospheres to become largely opaque to infrared radiation due to collision-induced absorption., 12 pages, 4 figures. Having shown in a recent paper that the main sequence of omega Centauri is split into two distinct branches, we now present spectroscopic results showing that the bluer sequence is_less_ metal-poor. We have carefully combined GIRAFFE@VLT spectra of 17 stars on each side of the split into a single spectrum for each branch, with adequate S/N to show clearly that the stars of the blue main sequence are less metal poor by 0.3 dex than those of the dominant red one. From an analysis of the individual spectra, we could not detect any abundance spread among the blue main sequence stars, while the red main sequence stars show a 0.2 dex spread in metallicity. We use stellar-structure models to show that only greatly enhanced helium can explain the color difference between the two main sequences, and we discuss ways in which this enhancement could have arisen., 24 pages, 7 figures, The Astrophysical Journal, accepted 30 Nov. 2004

We discuss the main properties of the Galactic globular cluster (GC) blue straggler stars (BSS), as inferred from our new catalog containing nearly 3000 BSS. The catalog has been extracted from the photometrically homogeneous V vs. (B-V) color-magnitude diagrams (CMD) of 56 GCs, based on WFPC2 images of their central cores. In our analysis we used consistent relative distances based on the same photometry and calibration. The number of BSS has been normalized to obtain relative frequencies (F_{BSS}) and specific densities (N_S) using different stellar populations extracted from the CMD. The cluster F_{BSS} is significantly smaller than the relative frequency of field BSS. We find a significant anti-correlation between the BSS relative frequency in a cluster and its total absolute luminosity (mass). There is no statistically significant trend between the BSS frequency and the expected collision rate. F_{BSS} does not depend on other cluster parameters, apart from a mild dependence on the central density. PCC clusters act like normal clusters as far as the BSS frequency is concerned. We also show that the BSS luminosity function for the most luminous clusters is significantly different, with a brighter peak and extending to brighter luminosities than in the less luminous clusters. These results imply that the efficiency of BSS production mechanisms and their relative importance vary with the cluster mass., 12 pages, 3 figures. accepted for publication in ApJL

We reexamine an event that was previously reported by Sahu et al. as a microlensing event of a Galactic bulge star by a star of M22. We find strong evidence that the event was actually a dwarf nova outburst of a cataclysmic variable in the cluster. The primary evidence consists of the star's proper motion, Hα emission, X-ray luminosity, and variable brightness in quiescence. The star is in the cluster core but can be monitored from the ground for future outbursts to confirm its nature. This is one of a very small number of confirmed or probable dwarf nova eruptions seen in globular clusters and the first to be found in such a low-concentration cluster.

We have used the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) to measure the component of rotation of 47 Tuc in the plane of the sky, using background stars of the SMC as a reference. The rotation is comparable to that in the line of sight, showing that the axis of rotation of the cluster is considerably inclined. We also give an improved value of the absolute proper motion of 47 Tuc.

Having an accurate distortion correction is critical to doing accurate astrometry with the Wide Field Planetary Camera 2. Currently available solutions have serious systematic errors (∼0.2 pixel) of a skewing nature in their linear terms. We use the inner calibration field of q Centauri to find an improved cubic solution that is accurate to 0.01 pixel in the WF chips and to 0.02 pixel in the PC chip. Improvements beyond this will be difficult, as there are many factors that perturb the solution at the ∼0.01 pixel level: breathing, variations with filter, and the physical movement of the chips. There are probably not enough data available to constrain the solution to better than ∼0.01 pixel. Nevertheless, our solution is a major improvement and will allow many astrometric projects to obtain near-optimal results.

The first step toward doing high-precision astrometry is the measurement of individual stars in individual images, a step that is fraught with dangers when the images are undersampled. The key to avoiding systematic positional error in undersampled images is to determine an extremely accurate point-spread function (PSF). We apply the concept of the effective PSF (ePSF) and show that in images that consist of pixels it is the ePSF, rather than the often-used instrumental PSF, that embodies the information from which accurate star positions and magnitudes can be derived. We show how, in a rich star field, one can use the information from dithered exposures to derive an extremely accurate effective PSF by iterating between the PSF itself and the star positions that we measure with it. We also give a simple but effective procedure for representing spatial variations of the Hubble Space Telescope PSF. With such attention to the PSF, we find that we are able to measure the position of a single reasonably bright star in a single image with a precision of 0.02 pixel (2 mas in WF frames, 1 mas in PC), but with a systematic accuracy better than 0.002 pixel (0.2 mas in WF, 0.1 mas in PC), so that multiple observations can reliably be combined to improve the accuracy by .

A small manufacturing defect, known but rarely noted, occurs at approximately every 34th row of each of the chips of WFPC2. This defect induces errors in photometry at the 0.01–0.02 mag level for about 6% of all stars, and periodic errors in astrometry for all stars, with an amplitude of 0.03 pixel. We derive simple corrections for these errors. The errors exist in all astrometry and photometry previously done with WFPC2, but they can be avoided in future work by applying the corrections that we give here.

It was the feeling of the Scientific Organizing Committee that 50 years after the introduction of the concept of stellar populations it might be desirable to attempt to rationalize their classification and terminology/Toward this end a panel discussion was organized, which was followed by a period of audience participation. Although not all those who contributed to the latter section turned in a written version of their remarks, that section is reported as well as possible here.

We present observations of the centers of the Galactic globular clusters NGC 6362 and NGC 6934 obtained with the Hubble Space Telescope/Wide Field Planetary Camera 2 as part of the snapshot program GO-7470. The B, V color-magnitude diagrams (CMDs) are presented for 4104 stars in NGC 6362 and for 8187 stars in NGC 6934. From the CMDs, we obtain (m - M)V = 14.67 ± 0.20 and E(B-V) = 0.06 ± 0.03 for NGC 6362 and (m - M)V = 16.37 ± 0.20 and E(B-V) = 0.05 ± 0.02 for NGC 6934. Each cluster shows a well-defined sequence of blue stragglers. Both the CMD and the luminosity function (LF) of the blue stragglers differ in the two clusters, suggesting two different origins for these stars. NGC 6362 has a strikingly narrow blue straggler sequence. The data have also been used to derive a complete LF, which extends from the red giant branch tip to 2–3 mag below the turnoff. In the case of NGC 6362, which has the deepest LF, the theoretical LF cannot match both the evolved LF and that of the main sequence with any reasonable mass-function slope. The LF has also been used to estimate the ages of the two clusters. A comparison with the theoretical LF, the more classical isochrone fitting, and the ΔV suggest an age between 13 and 16 Gyr for both clusters. No significant age difference between NGC 6362 and NGC 6934 is observed.

Observations with the Faint Object Camera on board the Hubble Space Telescope have revealed a new optical jet in the core of the elliptical galaxy NGC 3862 (3C 264). Morphologically, this jet is similar to the synchrotron jets seen in other galaxies, as it shows knots and bifurcations. The optical spectral index is also similar to that found in other jets. Thus, the nucleus of NGC 3862 appears to contain the fifth known example of an optical synchrotron jet. Since NGC 3862 is a typical radio-loud elliptical galaxy, it seems likely that many nonthermal jets found in the radio continuum may also have optical counterparts.

We have imaged the core of NGC 6522 and an adjacent field 1' north in the U and B passbands using the (pre-COSTAR) HST Planetary Camera. We find 13 stars located 1.5 mag above the horizontal branch. These supra-horizontal-branch (SHB) stars have not been noted previously in NGC 6522, although they occur in other globular clusters. The SHB stars' radial distribution appears to be similar to those of the red giants. There are indications that the NGC 6522 core red giants are depleted relative to the horizontal branch stars. The SHB stars may be evolved blue horizontal-branch stars, the tidally stripped cores of red giants, or evolved blue stragglers. There is also a well-populated horizontal branch with a large number of very blue stars; in these passbands the overall color-magnitude diagram resembles that of the core collapse cluster M15.

We present distributions of colors of stars along the horizontal branch of the globular cluster NGC 2808, from Hubble Space Telescope WFPC2 imaging in B, V, and an ultraviolet filter (F218W). This cluster's HB is already known to be strongly bimodal, with approximately equal-sized HB populations widely separated in the color-magnitude diagram. Our images reveal a long blue tail with two gaps, for a total of four nearly distinct HB groups. These gaps are very narrow, corresponding to envelope-mass differences of only \sim 0.01 Msun. This remarkable multimodality may be a signature of mass-loss processes, subtle composition variations, or dynamical effects; we briefly summarize the possibilities. The existence of narrow gaps between distinct clumps on the HB presents a challenge for models that attempt to explain HB bimodality or other peculiar HB structures., LaTeX, including compressed figures. My first reaction, at the end of this conference, is that it has not produced nearly as much “Confrontation of Theory and Observations” as one might have wished. We have all made our separate presentations, but no one has yet made the connections that are so much to be desired. Perhaps it is just that we need time to absorb what we have heard, and react to it.

HST makes it possible for the first time to study nearly the entire mass range of globular-cluster main sequences, from the turnoff down almost to the theoretical limit for hydrogen ignition. We present main-sequence luminosity functions (LFs) for four clusters that include stars with M < 0.15M⊙ in all cases. We compare these and other LFs that have been obtained with HST for a total of five globulars to date. Two of the three clusters in the sample that have similar metallicities have nearly identical LFs, while the third is relatively deficient in low mass stars. Possible implications of this finding are briefly discussed. Inferred mass functions vary significantly depending on the mass-luminosity relations that are adopted.

HST observations contribute in many ways to a better understanding of the dynamical nature of globular clusters. Unprecedentedly faint photometry gives new determinations of the numbers of low-mass stars. Cluster-to-cluster differences at the faint ends of the mass functions suggest differences in dynamical evolution. Mass segregation is clearly observed, from the envelope inward to the dense cluster center. The distribution of stars in the hitherto unresolved cores gives new data with which to test theories of core collapse, and these core profiles are also sensitive to the number of unseen remnant stars and binaries at the cluster center.

We revisit the problem of the split main sequence (MS) of the globular cluster omega Centauri, and report the results of two-epoch Hubble Space Telescope observations of an outer field, for which proper motions give us a pure sample of cluster members, and an improved separation of the two branches of the main sequence. Using a new set of stellar models covering a grid of values of helium and metallicity, we find that the best possible estimate of the helium abundance of the bluer branch of the MS is Y = 0.39 +/- 0.02. For the cluster center we apply new techniques to old observations: we use indices of photometric quality to select a high-quality sample of stars, which we also correct for differential reddening. We then superpose the color-magnitude diagram of the outer field on that of the cluster center, and suggest a connection of the bluer branch of the MS with one of the more prominent among the many sequences in the subgiant region. We use 14 orbits of ACS observations to reach the end of the white-dwarf cooling sequence in the globular cluster M4. Our photometry and completeness tests show that the end is located at magnitude m_F606W = 28.5+/-0.1, which implies an age of 11.6+/-0.6 Gyr (internal errors only). This is consistent with the age from fits to the main sequence turn-off (12.0+/-1.4 Gyr)., Comment: 37 pages, 13 figures (4 in low resolution), 1 table, 2 years of work. High-resolution observations of the core of the globular cluster 47 Tucanae with the Faint Object Camera on the Hubble Space Telescope reveal a high density of 'blue straggler' stars, occupying the upper end of the main sequence from which all stars in the cluster should have long since evolved. Their presence in the dense core supports the hypothesis that they formed by stellar collision and coalescence, and, as the heaviest objects in the cluster, have drifted to the core.

Photometry with HST's ACS reveals that the subgiant branch (SGB) of the globular cluster NGC 1851 splits into two well-defined branches. If the split is due only to an age effect, the two SGBs would imply two star formation episodes separated by $\sim$ 1 Gyr. We discuss other anomalies in NGC 1851 which could be interpreted in terms of a double stellar population. Finally, we compare the case of NGC 1851 with the other two globulars known to host multiple stellar populations, and show that all three clusters differ in several important respects., Comment: 22 pages, 7 figures, accepted for pubblication on ApJ

Motions of, and in, globular clusters can be observed from the ground and with the Hubble Space Telescope. This review covers types of observations and some of the results that they produce. Interactions of the Galactic bar with cluster orbits can in principle produce useful information, but the practical outlook is pessimistic.

Restoration procedures can greatly sharpen and beautify the details of an image, but they also have some drawbacks. Some of these adversely affect the photometry of stars in an astronomical image. One trouble is nonlinearity; another is that the restored pixels are no longer statistically independent. A more subtle problem is that the comparison of images in different wavelength bands poses an unusual requirement of identical restoration of two images that have different values of signal-to-noise ratio.

A proper-motion separation of M4 members from field stars, using deep HST observations separated by a time base-line of 5 years, allows us to study a pure sample of cluster main-sequence stars almost to the minimum mass for hydrogen burning. High-precision photometry shows how badly current theoretical models fail to reproduce the color-magnitude diagram of low-mass stars of moderate metallicity ([M/H] ~ -1). This inability of theory to reproduce the luminosity-radius relation casts doubt on the theoretical mass-luminosity relation, which is needed to convert the observed luminosity function (LF) into a mass function (MF), as well as to convert our locally determined LF into a global MF. To the extent that we trust theoretical M-L relations for such transformations, we obtain a flat MF from the LF, and some indication that theoretical masses might be too low at a given luminosity, near the H-burning limit., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures, ApJL in press (Accepted 30 Aug 2001)

This paper is aimed at determining the mass function in the low-metallicity, post-core collapse globular cluster NGC 7099 = M30, and analyzing its radial trend. New deep CCD photometry is presented in two fields centered at r = 2'.9 and 4'.4 from the center, respectively. We confirm that a good representation of the color-magnitude diagrams is obtained by oxygen-enhanced isochrones (as used by Capaccioli, Ortolani, and Piotto). The best fit yields (m - M)_v = 14.65, E(B-V) = 0.05, and an age of 16 Gyr. Luminosity functions down to V≃25 (M_v≃10.3) are constructed and carefully corrected for contamination by field objects and for incompleteness (see Appendix). Comparison with standard theoretical luminosity functions shows that the mass function, modeled with a power law, has an index x≃1, at variance with the x≃0 found by Richer, Fahlman, and VandenBerg for a field centered at r = 3'.4. An even steeper slope is given by the photometry in an outer field of M30 studied with the 4 m CTIO CCD camera (Piotto et al.). All together, our data agree with the trend of x found by Pryor, Smith, and McClure for a multimass King-Michie model (with or without velocity anisotropy), yielding a global slope x_0 ~0.7. Mass segregation is implied, though marginally, given the errors and the small variation of x expected on theoretical grounds in the radial range explored by our observations. M30 is found to deviate strongly from the mass-function slope versus metallicity relation (McClure et al.); its mass function is as fiat as that of intermediate-metallicity clusters.

Second-epoch HST observations of NGC 6397 have led to the measurement of proper motions accurate enough to separate the faintest cluster stars from the field, thus extending the luminosity function of this globular cluster far enough to approach the limit of hydrogen burning on the main sequence. We isolate a sample of 1385 main-sequence stars, from just below the turnoff down to I=24.5 (M_I~12.5), which corresponds to a mass of less than 0.1 solar masses for the metallicity of this cluster. NGC 6388 and NGC 6441 are two massive Galactic bulge globular clusters which share many properties, including the presence of an extended horizontal branch (HB), quite unexpected because of their high metal content. In this paper we use HST's WFPC2, ACS, and WFC3 images and present a broad multicolor study of their stellar content, covering all main evolutionary branches. The color-magnitude diagrams (CMDs) give compelling evidence that both clusters host at least two stellar populations, which manifest themselves in different ways. NGC 6388 has a broadened main sequence (MS), a split sub-giant branch (SGB), and a split red giant branch (RGB) that becomes evident above the HB in our data set; its red HB is also split into two branches. NGC 6441 has a split MS, but only an indication of two SGB populations, while the RGB clearly splits in two from the SGB level upward, and no red HB structure. The multicolor analysis of the CMDs confirms that the He difference between the two main stellar populations in the two clusters must be similar. This is observationally supported by the HB morphology, but also confirmed by the color distribution of the stars in the MS optical band CMDs. However, a MS split becomes evident in NGC 6441 using UV colors, but not in NGC 6388, indicating that the chemical patterns of the different populations are different in the two clusters, with C, N, O abundance differences likely playing a major role. Our deep HST images of the center of the globular cluster NGC 6397 are almost devoid of faint stars, implying that these stars must be much less concentrated to the cluster center than the brighter stars. This difference is an expected consequence of energy exchanges through stellar encounters, which give higher velocities to lower mass stars and cause them to have a larger average distance from the cluster center. The amount of segregation that we observe is consistent with the predictions of a multimass model in dynamical equilibrium.

It was the feeling of the Scientific Organizing Committee that 50 years after the introduction of the concept of stellar populations it might be desirable to attempt to rationalize their classification and terminology/Toward this end a panel discussion was organized, which was followed by a period of audience participation. Although not all those who contributed to the latter section turned in a written version of their remarks, that section is reported as well as possible here.

For sins that I have been unable to identify, I have been asked to give a review talk on the Galactic bulge. This is a subject to which I have not been very close in recent years, so that I have been able to approach it with a fairly open mind, though I must acknowledge a lot of generous help from Mike Rich, Don Terndrup, and Jay Frogel. But any errors, and especially any prejudices, are purely my own. And in my reading I have undoubtedly missed some important papers, but I hope that their authors will forgive me.

We present preliminary results of the analysis of a set of Hubble Space Telescope/Faint Object Camera images of the center of M15, the prototypical post-core-collapse globular cluster. We rule out, at the 95% confidence level, the 2″.2 core claimed to be detected in pre-repair HST imaging. We also measure a mass function in a field 20″ from the center.

We have used the Faint Object Camera (FOC) on the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) to observe three fields near the center of the post-collapse globular cluster NGC 6624 in B and V. We use individual stellar positions and a maximum-likelihood technique to measure a position for the cluster center. We then transfer this position and the position of the x-ray source 4U 1820-30 to right ascension and declination, and correct an error of 1.8 sec in an earlier paper. From star counts, we obtain a density profile, with a power-law cusp of slope -0.84 +/- 0.16. No flat core is evident. We construct color-magnitude diagrams down to the main-sequence turnoff near the cluster center, and more than three magnitudes below the turnoff in the outermost field at r = 28 sec. The former diagram reveals a central population of blue stragglers, which has not previously been observed in this cluster. These blue stragglers are quite similar in specific frequency to those recently observed by HST in the core of 47 Tuc, and their presence adds to the growing evidence of stellar interactions in dense globular-cluster cores.

We describe ultraviolet and optical imaging and spectroscopy within the central few arcseconds of the Seyfert galaxy NGC 4151, obtained with the Faint Object Camera on the Hubble Space Telescope. A narrowband image including (O III) lambda(5007) shows a bright nucleus centered on a complex biconical structure having apparent opening angle approximately 65 deg and axis at a position angle along 65 deg-245 deg; images in bands including Lyman-alpha and C IV lambda(1550) and in the optical continuum near 5500 A, show only the bright nucleus. In an off-nuclear optical long-slit spectrum we find a high and a low radial velocity component within the narrow emission lines. We identify the low-velocity component with the bright, extended, knotty structure within the cones, and the high-velocity component with more confined diffuse emission. Also present are strong continuum emission and broad Balmer emission line components, which we attribute to the extended point spread function arising from the intense nuclear emission. Adopting the geometry pointed out by Pedlar et al. (1993) to explain the observed misalignment of the radio jets and the main optical structure we model an ionizing radiation bicone, originating within a galactic disk, with apex at the active nucleus and axis centered on the extended radio jets. We confirm that through density bounding the gross spatial structure of the emission line region can be reproduced with a wide opening angle that includes the line of sight, consistent with the presence of a simple opaque torus allowing direct view of the nucleus. In particular, our modelling reproduces the observed decrease in position angle with distance from the nucleus, progressing initially from the direction of the extended radio jet, through our optical structure, and on to the extended narrow-line region. We explore the kinematics of the narrow-line low- and high-velocity components on the basis of our spectroscopy and adopted model structure.

Comparison of the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) far-UV and visible images of the nucleus of M31 deepens the mystery of the two brightness peaks recently discovered by Lauer et al. At 175 mm the brightest point is the optically fainter peak (P2) that is close to the dynamical center. The very center of P2 has a UV upturn that is much greater than that of the bulge light, while the UV upturn of the optically brighter but off-center P1 is very similar to that of its surroundings. The excess FUV radiation form P2 is closely confined to its center and has a total flux density of 3 micro-joules, a level that is less likely to come from stellar radiation than from a high-frequency extension of the radio source at the center of M31. A surrounding region of 1.8 pc radius has a somewhat smaller Uv upturn than the rest of the bulge, but there is some lingering possibility that this depression might be an artifact of our correction of the spherical aberration. Our improvement decomposition of the V image removes the need to postulate a dust lane near the center. We confirm that P1 is very compact, and we derive a luminosity for it similar to that found by Lauer et al. The implications of all of this are briefly discussed.

We present a catalogue of surface-brightness profiles (SBPs) of 125 Galactic globular clusters, the largest such collection ever gathered. The SPBs are constructed from generally inhomogeneous data, but are based heavily on the Berkeley Global Cluster Survey of Djorgovski & King. All but four of the SBPs have photometric zero points. We derive central surface brightness, King-model concentrations, core radii, half-light, and other fraction-of-light radii where data permit, and we briefly discuss their use.
