Photon-phonon coupling holds strong potential for sound and temperature control with light, opening new horizons in detector technology, remote sound generation and signal broadcasting. Here, we report on a novel stereoscopic ultralight converter based on a three dimensional graphene structure 3G-sponge, which exhibits very high absorption, near-to-air density, low inertia, and negligible effective heat capacity. We studied the heat and sound generation under the excitation of electromagnetic waves. 3G-sponge shows exceptional photon to heat and sound transduction efficiency over an enormous frequency range from MHz to PHz. As an application, we present an audio receiver based on a 3G-sponge amplitude demodulation. Our results will lead to a wide range of applications from light-controlled sound sources to broadband high-frequency graphene electronics.

Aims: To compare the discriminatory power of an automated ribotyping method for Vibrio cholerae subtyping with the pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE), to evaluate the possibility of automated ribotyping in use of outbreak investigations and surveillance of cholera. Methods and Results: Eight-one epidemiologically unrelated isolates of V. cholerae, and 19 isolates from seven cholera outbreaks were used as the panels. When comparing the two methods using the epidemiologically unrelated isolates, automated ribotyping using PvuII distinguished 38 different ribotypes with a D-value of 0·8956. When combined with serotyping, the D-value is 0·9466. However, PFGE with NotI and SfiI digestions had higher D-values of 0·9951 and 0·9948, respectively. PFGE could cluster the isolates from each outbreak into the same pattern, and distinguish different patterns from different outbreaks, whereas automated ribotyping had lower discriminatory ability. Conclusions: The automated ribotyping has lower discriminatory ability compared to PFGE, and is limited to application in V. cholerae subtyping and outbreak investigation. Significance and Impact of the Study: The study evaluated the limitation in subtyping of automated ribotyping for V. cholerae, and raise the question of improvement for the automated ribotyping in subtyping.

T-protein, one of the components of the glycine cleavage complex, catalyses the formation of ammonia and methylene-tetrahydrofolate from H-protein-bound intermediate. Native T-protein of the glycine cleavage system from E. coli was efficiently purified using a combination of hydrophobic interaction, gel permeation and ion exchange chromatography. Synchrotron radiation small angle X-ray solution scattering indicates that T-protein has an extended structure in solution. A low resolution model of the protein was constructed ab initio and tentative models of the tertiary structure were built using prediction methods constrained by the scattering data.

The phosphorylation of EF-2 by the effects of different experimental conditions which is catalysed by EF-2 kinase III in rabbit reticulocyte lysate has been studied, The phosphorylation of 94 kDa protein which is co-migrated with EF-2 on a denaturing gel was inhibited in the presence of BEM, and cAMP whereas enhanced in the presence of stress causing agents such as high pO(2) and heat shock as well as GDP.

The phosphorylation of elongation factor 2 (EF-2) by Ca2+/calmodulin kinase III decreases its activity and results in inhibition of translation. The effects of different experimental conditions on the phosphorylation of EF-2 in rabbit reticulocyte have been investigated. The phosphorylation of EF-2 was enhanced in the presence of GDP and inhibited by cyclic-AMP and NEM whereas the ADP-ribosylation of EF-2 did not change the extent of its phosphorylation.

Bulk-heterojunction (BHJ) non-fullerene organic solar cells prepared from sequentially deposited donor and acceptor layers (sq-BHJ) have recently been promising to be highly efficient, environmentally friendly, and compatible with large area and roll-to-toll fabrication. However, the related photophysics at donor-acceptor interface and the vertical heterogeneity of donor-acceptor distribution, critical for exciton dissociation and device performance, are largely unexplored. Herein, steady-state and time-resolved optical and electrical techniques are employed to characterize the interfacial trap states. Correlation with the luminescent efficiency of interfacial states and its non-radiative recombination, interfacial trap states are characterized to be about 50% more populated in the sq-BHJ than as-cast BHJ (c-BHJ), which probably limits the device voltage output. Cross-sectional energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and ultraviolet photoemission spectroscopy depth profiling directly vizualize the donor-acceptor vertical stratification with a precision of 1-2 nm. From the proposed "needle" model, the high exciton dissociation efficiency is rationalized. Our study highlights the promise of sequential deposition to fabricate efficient solar cells, and points towards improving the voltage output and overall device performance via eliminating interfacial trap states.

Activating mutations of the G proteins, Gsalpha (gsp) and Gi2alpha (gip) have been reported in subsets of pituitary tumors. The objective of the study was to assess the frequency of gsp and gip mutations in pituitary tumors from Turkish patients and to investigate the possibility of mutations of protein kinase A catalytic subunit (PKAC) that activates the downstream effectors of adenylyl cyclase. PCR-amplified genomic DNA was analyzed for the presence of mutations in codons 201 and 227 of Gsalpha, codon 179 and 205 of Gi2alpha and codon 196 of PKAC, by single strand conformation polymorphism analysis, allele-specific oligonucleotide hybridization and DNA sequencing. Twenty-two patients from Turkey, 15 females and 7 males were investigated; 7 somatotroph adenomas, 7 clinically non-functioning tumors, 7 prolactinomas and 1 corticotroph adenoma. G protein mutations were identified in 6 of 22 (27.3%) pituitary tumors. Four tumors (3/7 somatotroph adenomas, 43%, 1/7 clinically non-functioning tumor) demonstrated gsp mutations at codon 201 arginine to cysteine and one recurrent somatotroph adenoma demonstrated a mutation of the Gi2alpha gene at codon 193 lysine to arginine. One tumor exhibited a C to T variation in the intervening sequence between codons 179 and 205 of the Gi2alpha gene. No mutations at codon 227 of Gsalpha, codons 179 and 205 of Gi2alpha and codon 196 of the PKAC gene were identified.
