Not driven by observations, this paper digs into the “internal workings” of spacetime. Through logical deductions, micro dimensions appear to be uncovered, with possible SU(4) or SU(5): 1. It is thought that special relativity merely initiated the definition of spacetime, but more scales are yet to be defined. 2. In the definition of spacetime, EM (electromagnetism) played another critical role, i.e., the six circular magnetic and electric field lines (running on the six planes) cross and “define equivalencies” between the four linear scales. Without this definition, light would not be measured at the same speed in different directions. Being a gauge theory, EM defines two things: Linear scales and “equivalencies” between linear scales. 3. For any scale (and their equivalencies), there could be no or many arbitrarily assumed definitions, or a concrete definition based on relevant physics. Nature would conform with but the one based on relevant physics, because Nature itself is consisted of that relevant physics. Thus, the principle: No scale and their equivalencies are meaningful unless defined by relevant physics. 4. Then, what are those fields running (and defining equivalencies between the six “angle scales”) on the six planes of the 4D spacetime? It is believed to be the “classical” weak fields which run in solid angles (or “3D angles”) between the six planes. (The only suspicion is that this rotation does not preserve vector length, which is not a problem ultimately.) 5. If the six angle scales are drawn as six axes of a 6D superspace, then the “3D angle” rotations look like “plane angle” rotations and cause SO(6)∼SU(4) [or SO(10)∼SU(5) for 5D spacetime], which appears to match baryon spectrum without quarks. 6. Since this rotation is between “planes” of the “external” spacetime, no linear dimension is visible, yet causing P-violations. 7. Similarly, fields running in 4D and 5D angle rotations (between 3D and 4D surfaces) must also exist, which may be responsible for CP-violation and strong interactions. 8. The 5D angle rotations may be generating Baryon and Lepton numbers and hence explaining their conservation behaviors, e.g., no proton decay. 9. It can be inferred, if 3D, 4D (and 5D) angle rotation fields did not exist, the 4D (and 5D) spacetime would be warped and the four (or five) linear axes would not be perpendicular to each other. 10. EM was simplified and turned elegant “only” after redefinition of spacetime by special relativity. Likewise, weak, CP-violation and strong interactions are expected to simplify and turn as elegant as EM when 2D (plane), 3D, and 4D angle scales are defined by weak, CP-violation, and strong forces, respectively. 11. Verifications as accurate as EM are expected too. 12. Mathematically, higher angle rotations thought to be inexistent only because it does not conserve vector length. Actually, they did not vanish and their symmetries would surface in particle classifications when linear momentum is not concerned. Micro dimensions being invisible is because symmetries do not have to happen between linear axes, but can happen between 2-, 3- or 4-surfaces. These geometries together generate the complete particles spectrum.

The role of oral microbiota in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) is poorly understood. Here we sought to evaluate the association of the bacterial microbiome with host gene methylation and patient outcomes, and to explore its potential as a biomarker for early detection or intervention. Here we performed 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing in sixty-eight HNSCC patients across both tissue and oral rinse samples to identify oral bacteria with differential abundance between HNSCC and controls. A subset of thirty-one pairs of HNSCC tumor tissues and the adjacent normal tissues were characterized for host gene methylation profile using bisulfite capture sequencing. We observed significant enrichments of Fusobacterium and Peptostreptococcus in HNSCC tumor tissues when compared to the adjacent normal tissues, and in HNSCC oral rinses when compared to healthy subjects, while ten other bacterial genera were largely depleted. These HNSCC-related bacteria were discriminative for HNSCC and controls with area under the receiver operating curves (AUCs) of 0.84 and 0.86 in tissue and oral rinse samples, respectively. Moreover, Fusobacterium nucleatum abundance in HNSCC cases was strongly associated with non-smokers, lower tumor stage, lower rate of recurrence, and improved disease-specific survival. An integrative analysis identified that enrichment of F. nucleatum was associated with host gene promoter methylation, including hypermethylation of tumor suppressor genes LXN and SMARCA2, for which gene expressions were downregulated in the HNSCC cohort from The Cancer Genome Atlas. In conclusion, we identified a taxonomically defined microbial consortium associated with HNSCC that may have clinical potential regarding biomarkers for early detection or intervention. Host&ndash, microbe interactions between F. nucleatum enrichment and clinical outcomes or host gene methylation imply a potential role of F. nucleatum as a pro-inflammatory driver in initiating HNSCC without traditional risk factors, which warrants further investigation for the underlying mechanisms.

The differential conductance of graphene is shown to exhibit a zero-bias anomaly at low temperatures, arising from a suppression of the quantum corrections due to weak localization and electron interactions. A simple rescaling of these data, free of any adjustable parameters, shows that this anomaly exhibits a universal, temperature- ($T$) independent form. A new mechanism leading to hole injection into insulating polymers under normal operating fields is presented. In general, it is unlikely that holes can be injected into large band-gap insulating materials under normal operating fields less than 1 MV cm−1, particularly for materials that are not in the form of thin films. However, insulating polymers consist of a large amount of various unavoidable ionic impurities, so ionic conduction plays an important role in their electrical properties. The presence of such ions modifies the field distribution in the material with the tendency of enhancing the field toward the anode, thus increasing the probability for hole tunneling from the anode to the material. The appearance of positive space charge near the anode after a prolonged period of electrical stressing, as observed by many investigators, may be considered as the experimental evidence of the mechanism. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Among the oldest of professions are Medicine (the art and science of healing) and Teaching. both of which. in the earliest of times. were accorded the respectability of nobility. Medicine continues to be a highly regarded profession. Many factors contribute in maintaining this notion of nobility. not the least of which is the sentiment attached to the sanctity of human life.

A new optical technique for the determination of spatial distributions of the thickness and the optical constants of thin films is proposed. This technique is simple and nondestructive involving mainly an ellipsometer and a coherent light source, and no contact to the thin-film samples is required. A theoretical estimation indicates that this technique may provide a spatial resolution close to the diffraction-limited resolution under certain conditions. Possible applications of this technique are also discussed.

The liquid motion normally observed in electrically stressed dielectric liquids is mainly caused by two mechanisms: (a) the Coulombic force due to the interaction of the space charge with the field, and (b) the electromechanical force created by the field resulting from the spatial variation of the dielectric constant due to the variation of temperature from domain to domain and from time to time in the liquid. The direction of such a liquid motion depends on which of these two mechanisms is dominant. The schlieren images sometimes observed in liquids under applied fields show mainly the change of the already existing temperature gradients in the liquids, and this change is due to the liquid motion caused by either mechanisms (a) or (b) or both. It is concluded that the schlieren images are directly governed by the temperature distribution in the liquid and have no direct bearing on the formation and distribution of space charges.

On the principle that the spatial distribution of the refractive index produced by a small applied temperature difference is changed due to an electromechanical force created by the field resulting from the spatial variation of the dielectric constant, the electric field distributions in a dielectric system can be determined using the schlieren method. Some experimental results for benzene and n-hexane between two spherical electrodes obtained with this method show the essential features predicted from the space charge effects. This method can be used to study electric field and space charge distributions under both steady and transient conditions.

The structure of ethylene-vinyl-acetate (EVA) copolymers depends strongly on the comp9sition of E (ethylene) and VA (vinyl-acetate). With various compositions in VA:E ratio in weight, the results show that both the density and the melt index increase, while the molecular weight, the melt viscosity and the degree of crystallinity decrease with increasing VA:E ratio in EVA copolymers. This reflects that both the ethylene sequence length and the activation energy of fluidity decrease with increasing VA content. The change of the structure of EVA copolymers is directly correlated with the change of the mechanical and dielectric properties of this material. The peak values of the dielectric constant and the dielectric loss in the dielectric relaxation temperature characteristics increase, while the activation energy of polarization and the dielectric breakdown strength decrease with increasing VA:E ratio. Other mechanical properties, such as the tensile strength and the environment stress cracking, also correspondingly decrease as the molecular weight and the ethylene sequence length decrease due to the increase of VA content in EVA copolymers.

In this paper, we summarise our recent results in fault tolerant formation control of Unmanned Air Vehicles (UAV). A fault tolerant control scheme to deal with both GPS sensor failure and wireless communication packet losses is presented. Moreover, some extensions to the formation control algorithms developed by UC Berkeley are made to support time-varying heading and curved flight trajectories. The effectiveness of the presented fault tolerant control scheme is illustrated by real-time formation flight simulations conducted in a wireless network environment. Both rotary and fixed wing UAVs, mesh and triangular formations, and straight and curved trajectories are considered in our real-time simulations.

The effects of substrate bias on microwave plasma etching have been theoretically analyzed, and the potentials at the surface of the semiconducting and the insulating materials being etched under a substrate bias have been derived. The computed results indicate that the etch rate increases with increasing impinging ion energy which depends strongly on the magnitude and the frequency of the substrate bias voltage. The theory correlates well with the experimental results on the electron cyclotron resonance microwave plasma etching of semiconducting Si and insulating Si3N4 films under radio frequency (107 Hz) substrate bias voltages.

The shadowgraphic image reflects only those regions of disturbance occurring in a dielectric liquid, which differ in refractive index from their surroundings. The time required for the onset of a prebreakdown disturbance after the application of a step voltage, and the rate of growth of the disturbance depend strongly on the viscosity (or the temperature) of the liquid. The refractive index is lower inside the disturbance region than outside. The variation of the external current is consistent with the temporal change of the disturbance. It is proposed that the formation of a disturbance region is due to the coulombic repulsion of local homocharges which in turn causes a decrease in local density and hence a decrease in refractive index. At highfields the anode injects holes to form positive ions and the cathode injects electrons, and theelectric conduction is filamentary. The electric breakdown in condensed materials (liquids and solids) involves double injection and the creation of low density regions to enable the charge-carrier multiplication processes to take place. Thus the breakdown strength is governed by the parameters which control the conditions for such prebreakdown phenomena to arise.

From the measurements of excess transmission losses due to external bends, it is shown that doubly clad optical fibers suffer much less bending loss than singly clad optical fibers on the basis of equal index difference between the core and the cladding, and equal core radius.

Taking into account the combined electrode and bulk effects, an expression for the high-field filamentary conduction as a function of applied field and temperature for dielectric liquids has been derived. This expression can explain recent experimental results on the field-dependent thermal activation energy for electric conduction in hydrocarbon liquids.

On the basis of the experimental observation that the conductivity of acetophenone-doped polyethylene is field dependent over a range of applied electric stresses, a simple analysis shows that the increase in resistance to electrical treeing by additives is associated with this field-dependent conductivity. The additives can be considered as weak electrolytes. The rate of their dissociation into positive and negative charge carriers which causes an increase in conductivity is field dependent. A model for the behavior of the additives which leads to the lowering of the electrical stress at sites of high and divergent electrical stresses is given. Presently available experimental results are in good agreement with our proposed theory. Other factors affecting this mechanism are also discussed.

Electrical discharge and breakdown in low‐mobility insulating liquids and solids involve the creation of low‐density domains or channels in the bulk by carrier injection from electrical contacts and subsequently dissociative trapping and recombination as a necessary prelude. Internal discharge such as electrical treeing and breakdown are initiated by impact ionization within such low‐density domains or channels and then followed by an indefinite increase in carrier multiplication in the conduction level that extends the channels and finally destroys the material inside them.

Using the Runge-Kutta and Newton-Raphson methods, the electric fileds on the bushing-type insulator surface covered partly by a corona-suppression semiconductor coating with a field-dependent resistivity have been computed for semiconductors having various resistivityfield ield (p-E) characteristics. The field distribution along the insulator surface is strongly dependent on the p-E characteristic and the extension of the semiconductor coating as well as the frequency of the operating voltages. By assigning the highest field along the insulator surface to be the critical field for the onset of corona discharges (or the breakdown strength of air or other medium), the corona inception voltage of the insulators can be evaluated easily. Thus, by the comparison of the field distribution curves, it is easy to determine the type of the p-E characteristic and the extension of the semiconductor coating for optimal corona suppression. For bushing-type insulators, the computed results show that the semiconductors with p = poexp(-BE) or p * pO[2 - exp(aE)], where po, and a are constants, could give optimal corona suppression. The optimal choice depends on the physical parameters of the insulator, the extension of the semiconductor coating and the frequency of the operating voltages, and therefore the constants pO and or a have to be determined for individual cases. In general, for optimal al corona suppression po should decrease with increasing frequency and length of the insulator surface; and or a should increase with increasing length of the insulator surface.

The physical parameters of the guard gap between the guard and the guarded electrodes of the three-electrode system generally used for dielectric loss measurements can be modelled by a simple T-network. Theoretical analysis shows that under certain conditions these parameters can cause great errors or even make the apparent dissipation factor negative, when measured with a Schering bridge. The sharp edges of the guard and the guarded electrodes may result in the creation of high local fields and give rise to electrical discharges under high voltage conditions. Local discharges near the sharp edges directly modify the physical parameters of the guard gap. Such anomalous phenomena have been experimentally observed and they can be attributed to the change in physical parameters in the guard gap. Experimental results are in good agreement with the theoretical analysis based on the T-network model. Methods for suppressing or minimizing these anomalous effects are also discussed.

We used the indirect microimmunofluorescence test to determine the presence of antibodies in sheep, cattle, goat, cat, and dog sera to phase I and II Coxiella burnetii antigens in Nova Scotia. Only 6.7 per cent of the 329 sheep tested had antibodies to phase II antigen and none had antibodies to phase I. Of 29 goats tested, 7 per cent and 3.5 per cent had antibodies to phase II and phase I antigens, respectively. In contrast, 23.8 per cent of the 214 cattle tested had antibodies to phase II antigen, and 24.2 per cent had antibodies to phase I antigen; 24.1 per cent of 216 cats tested had antibodies to phase II antigen and 6 per cent had antibodies to phase I antigen. None of the 447 dogs tested had antibodies detected. We conclude that cattle and cats may be reservoirs for human Q fever in Nova Scotia.

The prevalence of Coxiella burnetti infection (Q fever) was determined among Nova Scotia (N.S.) and Prince Edward Island (P.E.I.) blood donors by using the complement fixation and microimmunofluorescence (IF) test. The complement fixation and IF antibody tests measured antibody prevalence for the phase II or phase I and II antigens, respectively. Complement-fixing antibodies to phase II antigen were detected in 4.1% of 997 N.S. and 5.0% of 219 P.E.I. blood donors. Anti-phase II antibodies were detected by microimmunofluorescence in 11.8 and 14.6% of the blood donors in the two provinces, respectively. Anti-phase I antibodies were detected among 2.8% of the N.S. blood donors and 6.3% of the P.E.I. blood donors. Comparison of rates of anti-phase II IF by counties in N.S. revealed that there was at least one county where infection by C. burnetti is hyperendemic. Rates of antibody prevalence were similar in all three areas of P.E.I. examined. We conclude that "Q fever" is endemic in N.S. and P.E.I. and that the microimmunofluorescence test is more suitable than the complement fixation test for seroepidemiologic studies.

Optical constants of amorphous Se1−xTex films have been measured for 0⩽x⩽0.45 at wavelengths from 0.35 to 2 μm using both an ellipsometer and a spectrophotometer. The results show that the optical transmission cutoff wavelength, the refractive index, and the extinction coefficient vary linearly with x (the Te content). The optical constants are dispersive. The dispersion is attributed to the optical transition of electrons from the valence band to the conduction band. All results can be consistently explained on this basis. The substitution of Te atoms for Se atoms in Se1−xTex films increases the density and enhances the tailing of the localized states into the mobility gap, thus resulting in the change of optical constants with x in Se1−xTex films.

Further theoretical analyses show that it is the physical parameters of the guard gap region which give rise to the anomalous phenomena observed in dielectric loss measurements using a three-electrode system. A Wagner or similar guard balance, which is generally used to make the potentials at the guard and the guarded electrodes identical in magnitude and in phase, may reduce the errors caused by the bridge balance conditions, ons, but cannot alter the physical parameters inherent in the guard gap region. An interfacial dielectric layer such as vaseline between the test sample surfaces and the electrodes enhances the anomalous phenomena under certain conditions. The potential along the guard gap surface varies from point to point although the potentials at the guard and the guarded electrodes are equal in magnitude and in phase. It is the nonuniform field distribution in the guard gap region which results in electrical discharges at the sharp edges of the guard and the guarded electrodes. Experimental results are in good agreement wtih the theoretical analyses. Methods for suppressing these anomalous effects also are discussed.

A new theoretical model for high-field electric conduction and breakdown in dielectric liquids based on the theory of filamentary single injection is presented. The model is based on the following postulates. 1) The high-field conduction is mainly due to electronemission from the unavoidable asperities on the metallic cathodesurface and is confined in one or more filamentary paths, in which thecurrent density is much larger than that in other regions. 2) There ispractically no impact ionization avalanche in the liquid prior to breakdown,and, at the field of breakdown strength, there is one filamentarypath in which the current density may reach such a critical value thatthe Joule heating produced in it is sufficient to initiate the thermalinstability in the vicinity of the filament and hence the onset of thebreakdown process. Expressions for the high-field conduction currentand the breakdown strength as functions of temperature, hydrostaticpressure, gap length, molecular structure, and applied voltage waveformhave been derived. The computed results are in good agreementwith currently available experimental results for hydrocarbon dielectricliquids. Previous theories based on a uniform distribution ofcurrent density over the electrode area and on an impact ionization processare also critically examined.

Simple and reasonably accurate methods for determining the composition in a-Si1-xGex films have been proposed. The first one uses the X-ray fluorescence intensity of Ge-Kα line and the weight of the film. The second one uses the X-ray fluorescence intensities of both Ge-Kα line and Si-Kα line. The third one utilizes the signal intensities of Ge and Si ions in ion-micro analysis (IMA). In the latter two methods, a series of a-Si1-xGex films of which compositions have been determined by the first method are used as a standard. Advantages and disadvantages of these methods have been described.The compositions of a-Si1-xGex films prepared by the glow-discharge technique have been determined by the third method. The results agree quite well with the values which are estimated based on the deposition rate.

The internal discharge magnitude, the percentage of samples with electrical trees, and the tree penetration length in polyethylene for various a.c. fields have been found to be strongly dependent upon the applied hydrostatic pressure and the time of electrical stressing. The strong pressure-dependence of electrical treeing properties is in support of the model in which the creation, by carrier injection from electrical contacts, of low-density domains or channels in the bulk, followed by dissociative trapping and recombination, is a necessary prelude to the occurrence of impact ionization which leads to the formation of trees. Hydrostatic pressure suppresses the development of low-density domains or channels and thus improves the treeing properties.

On the basis of the principle that an applied electric field will cause a change in spatial distribution of the dielectric constant produced by a small applied temperature difference due to the interaction of the gradient of the dielectric constant with the field, the electric field distributions along the interface between a dielectric fluid and a dielectric solid can be measured using a Schlieren technique. Some experimental results for the interfaces between n-hexane and a glass plate surface, and between n-hexane and a semiconducting layer surface obtained with this technique show that the space charge is the dominant factor controlling the field distributions. The other factors, such as the dielectric constants and resistivities of the two materials forming the interface, would play an important role in determining the field distributions if and only if the space charge effect is negligibly small or can be ignored. This technique can be used to study electric field and space charge distributions along fluid-solid dielectric interfaces for practical insulation systems under both steady-state and transient conditions.

The electric strengths and time lags to breakdown in NaC1 single crystals have been measured using flat-topped impulse voltages with and without ultraviolet irradiation. The results show that radiation reduces the mean electric strength of annealed, unannealed, and plastically deformed specimens, but has no significant effect on the mean statistical time lag. Plastic deformation increases and annealing decreases both the electric strength and time lag. An increase in specimen thickness or an increase in overvoltage also causes a decrease in the mean statistical time lag. All observed phenomena can be explained by a lti-multielectron-avalanche mechanism.

In a search for Escherichia coli strains defective in ribonuclease activity, a uracil requiring strain lacking RNase I activity was fed yeast RNA as the sole source of uracil and mutants that failed to utilize yeast RNA as the sole source of uracil were isolated. Among thirty colonies thus isolated and tested three were found to contain a heat labile RNase activity in cell free extracts. (Assays were performed under conditions for RNase II.) Since no strain completely lacking this RNase activity was found, and since these three strains have reduced growth rates that seem to be caused by the same mutation that altered the RNase activity, we concluded that RNase II activity is indispensible during cell growth.

The electric strengths of n hexane and transformer oil have been measured at various pressures using linearly rising voltages having rates of rise between 50 kV/cm/?s and 20 MV/ cm/?s. Each measurement was made by applying a single pulse of sufficient magnitude to ensure breakdown in order to avoid the possible influence of prestressing with the normal multipulse technique. For both liquids the electric strengths are strongly dependent on the rate of rise of the applied field and on hydrostatic pressure, but the pressure dependence diminishes with increasing rate of rise of the applied field, and at rates of rise higher than about 4 MV/cm/?s the pressure dependence practically disappears. The results indicate that a certain time may be required for bubbles to form and deform in an electrically stressed liquid and that the bubble mechanism may not be operative in the breakdown process for fast-rising voltages.

In n-hexane, at fields up to 80 kV/cm, the dark conduction obeys Ohm's law, and the gamma-ray induced and ultraviolet photoinjected currents do not saturate for a wide range of temperatures. The induced and injected currents are proportional to the intensity of radiation. It is suggested that the dark conduction is associated with the presence of irremovable impurities and that the small fluctuation of conduction current is attributed to the electrons being irregularly attached to molecules and thermally released during their drift toward the anode. The factors influencing the mobilities of positive and negative charge carriers are discussed.

The resistivity of BaTiO{sub 3}-based, positive-temperature-coefficient (PTC) ceramic materials is not significantly affected by applied magnetic fields at temperatures below the Curie temperature, {Tc}, but it increases with increasing magnetic field when temperatures exceed {Tc}. The rate of this increase diminishes gradually as the magnetic field is further increased. The magnetic field effects are stronger for magnetic fields parallel to than transverse to the electric current flow. A brief discussion of the experimental results is given.

New laser ellipso -interferometry has been developed on the basis of the principle that spatially andtemporally coherent light reflected from the two surfaces of a thin solid film will interfere to form a two -dimensional fringe pattern which is directly related to the spatial distribution of the film thickness ifthe optical constants are uniformly distributed. This technique differs from the conventional ellipsometryand interferometry in that the new laser ellipso- interferometer can be used to map the thickness distributionof a whole thin film without involving the use of any scanning technique, and that its spatial resolution ishigh and can reach the diffraction-limited resolution under certain conditions. In this paper the principleand the applications of this technique are described and some experimental results are presented to demon-strate the use of this technique for checking the thickness uniformity of oxide layers in semiconductor devices. This new technique is non- destructive and the time required for this kind of measurements is muchless than that by any other conventional techniques. Furthermore, no computation is involved for checkingthe film thickness uniformity if both the film and the substrate are transparent or low -absorbing to thelaser light used for the measurements.IntroductionThere are scveral methods available for the measurements of the thickness of a thin film on a semiconduc-tor substrate.' However, none of them is suitable for checking the thickness uniformity of thin film layersin actual semiconductor devices. The conventional ellipsometry is limited by its spatial resolution for theobservation of fine structures in actual devices.' New spatially resolved ellipso-interferometry has been developed on the basis of the principle that spatially and temporally coherent light reflected from the two surfaces of a thin solid film will interfere to form a two-dimensional fringe pattern which is directly related to the spatial distribution of the film thickness if the optical constants are uniformly distributed. This technique differs from the conventional ellipsometry and interferometry in that the new ellipso-interferometer can be used to map the thickness distribution of a whole thin film without involving the use of any scanning technique, and in that its spatial resolution is high and can reach the diffraction-limited resolution under certain conditions. In this paper the principle and the applications of this technique are described, and some experimental results are presented to demonstrate the use of this technique for checking the thickness uniformity of oxide layers in semiconductor devices. This new technique is nondestructive, and the time required for this kind of measurement is much less than that by any other conventional technique.

Neurite promoting factors (NPF), fibroblast growth factor, and laminin were instilled inside autologous venous nerve conduits (AVNC) interposed across a 1 cm gap in the rat sciatic nerve. Axonal regeneration was measured electrophysiologically and histologically and was compared to control AVNC and autologous nerve grafts (ANG) in 45 rats. By 1 month, the AVNC group with NPF recovered an average nerve conduction velocity twice that of the ANG group (24 m/sec vs. 12 m/sec). The gastrocnemius muscle action potential of NPF grafts was twice that of the control AVNC and was similar to the ANG (1.63 mV vs. 0.87 mV). In subsequent months, the advantage of NPF disappeared; these grafts were grossly reduced to fibrous bands. Histological examination of these grafts at 5 months revealed a florid intraluminal fibrovascular proliferation, which appeared to be "choking off" the regenerating axons. It is suggested that more refined mixtures of NPF should be instilled inside AVNC so that the improved axonal regeneration is maintained while the late inhibitory fibrosis is avoided.

Internal discharge and electrical treeing in polymers involve the presence of voids or the creation of low-density channels at high fields to provide a favourable condition for impact ionization. A great deal of experimental evidence indicates that polyethylene contains a high density of microvoids with the sizes varying from less than 1 µm to larger than 10 µm. The microvoids may not be the direct cause of electric discharge, but they may be the source to initiate the formation of low-density channels which in turn initiate the formation of trees. The long-term deterioration in polymers is generally associated with the formation of trees. The purpose of this paper is to present some new results in support of the model that the creation of low-density channels under high fields is the prelude of the formation of trees based on the pressure dependence of electric discharge and treeing properties in polyethylene.

The tree initiation voltage, the initial tree penetration length and breakdown voltage in polyethylene, cross-linked polyethylene and acetophenone (1%) doped polyethylene have been measured under dc and ac voltage conditions using both the needle-plate and the needle-needle electrode configurations. The results show that all these high-field dielectric properties are strongly dependent on the polarity of the applied voltage at the needle, the defects created by cross-linking or impurity-doping in polyethylene, the geometric arrangement of the electrodes and the symmetry of the initial electric fields applied to the samples. The strong dependence of the dielectric properties on these parameters indicates that tree initiation is associated with electron and hole injection from electrodes and impact ionization by electrons in high-field regions with free volumes or mechanical cracking. The latter may be created during the manufacturing process of the materials (pre-existing defects) or by the high. field effects (post-introducing defects). In this paper we shall present our model for tree initiation, some new results and a brief discussion.
