Because the world's population is increasing, science-based policies are needed to promote sustainable global development. It is important to maintain and restore the environment and help human society overcome the risks from industrialization and unsustainable exponential growth. In recent years, many studies have highlighted that macroalgae represent a key marine resource for ecological and sustainable living, thus helping to address today's global problems, such as water pollution, ocean acidification, and global warming. Macroalgae show the potential to provide innovative, ecofriendly, and nutritious food sources and natural compounds for various industries, such as biomedical, food, agricultural, and pharmaceutical industries. This review discusses how macroalgae can help us today and how they can promote a more sustainable way of life in the future. It also discusses the potential danger for ecosystems and the global population if these organisms are not part of the solution but part of the problem. Colloids are essential materials for modern inkjet printing and coating technology. For printing and coating, it is desirable to have a high density of colloids with uniformity. Binary colloids, which consist of different size colloidal particles, have the potential to achieve high coating density and uniformity from size effects. We report a strategy to attain high-density deposits of binary colloids with uniform, crack-free, and symmetric deposits through droplet evaporation on micropillar arrays. We modify surfaces of micropillar arrays with plasma treatment to control their surface energy and investigate how binary colloidal fluids turn into well-controlled deposits during evaporation with X-ray microscopic and tomographic characterizations. We attribute temporary surface energy modification of micropillar arrays to the well-controlled high-density final deposits. This simple, low-cost, and scalable strategy would provide a viable way to get high-quality, high-density deposits of colloids for various applications.

This study characterized and investigated the toxicity of two multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) NM-401 and NM-403 at 60 and 180 µg after four repeated intratracheal instillations; follow-up times were 3, 7, 30 and 90 days after the last instillation. NM-401 was needle-like, long, and thick, while NM-403 was entangled, short and thin. Both MWCNT types induced transient pulmonary and systemic alterations in renal function and oxidative lipid damage markers in recent times. Animals showed general toxicity in the immediate times after exposures, in addition to increased pulmonary LDH release at day 3. In further times, decreased liver and kidney relative weights were noted at higher MWCNT doses. Lung histological damages included pulmonary fibrosis, for both MWCNT types, similarly to asbestos; single liver and kidney histological alterations were present. Repeated instillations led to persistent pulmonary damage at low doses and possibly the extrapulmonary effects may be associated with the consecutive exposures.

A wave energy assessment is performed in the Canary Islands, based on a 33-year hindcast, between 1979 and 2011. The third-generation wave models WAVEWATCH III and SWAN are used to study the generation of the waves in the North Atlantic basin and the transformation of the waves in the Canary Islands, respectively. The hindcast system was validated in a prior study, showing a relevant wave energy resource distribution with an average annual energy availability of 25–30 kW/m. This study intends to offer a detail description of the wave climate, combining the previous results with the new studies. The results show that the seasonal mean distribution of wave energy varies between 15 and 20 kW/m, in the spring and 25–30 kW/m, in the winter, while in the less energetic areas the seasonal average varies between 10 and 15 kW/m, in the spring, and 15–20 kW/m, in the winter. Also, the temporal variability indexes suggest that the East coast of the islands presents less variability and that the North/Northwest coast of the islands exhibits greater energy availability.

In recent decades, pollution levels have increased, mainly as a result of the intensive anthropogenic activities such industrial development, intensive agricultural practices, among others. The impact of metals and organic contaminants is, nowadays, a great concern to the scientific and political communities. Copper compounds are the main sold pesticides in Europe, as well as herbicides, including glyphosate. Diphenyl ethers are the second ones most sold. Glyphosate and copper compounds are intensively studied, but the opposite is seen in the case of diphenyl ethers, including fluorinated pesticides (e.g., oxyfluorfen). Some research has been performed to increase the knowledge about these contaminants, daily inputted on the aquatic systems and with dangerous effects at physical and biochemical levels on the organisms. A wide range of biomarkers (e.g., growth, survival, reproductive success, enzymatic activity, lipid metabolism) has been applied to determine the potential effects in many species. This review intends to: (a) perform a compilation of the knowledge in previous research about the action mode of organic (fluorinated-based herbicide) and inorganic (copper-based pesticides) contaminants; (b) carry out an information survey about the lethal and sub-lethal effects of the fluorinated-based pesticides, namely the oxyfluorfen and the copper-based pesticides, on aquatic species from different trophic levels, according to in vitro and in vivo studies; (c) understand the impact of oxyfluorfen and copper-based pesticides, considering their effects reported in in vitro studies and, simultaneously, the authorized concentrations by legal organizations and the effective concentrations of each pollutant found in the environment. The literature analyzed revealed noxious effects of Cu and oxyfluorfen to aquatic organisms, including freshwater and marine species, even when exposed to the reference as well as to environmental concentrations, thus highlighting the importance of more monitoring and ecotoxicological studies, to chemical pollutants and different species from different ecological niches, to sustain and improve the legislation.

The present work uses for the first time scatterometer wind fields to force a wave model and compares the accuracy of the resulting wave conditions with the ones obtained when using two different sources of hindcast wind fields forcing the same wave spectral model in the Atlantic Ocean. For this purpose, a 5-year hindcast (2010–2014) is performed with the wave spectral model SWAN for the Madeira and Azores archipelagos. The model uses as input the bathymetry from GEBCO, the wave boundary conditions from the WAVEWATCH III wave model provided by Ifremer and winds from the ERA-Interim and ERA5 databases, and remotely sensed winds from scatterometers. A quantitative analysis of the results is performed, and the numerical results are validated against altimeter data and buoy measurements. Globally, ERA-Interim, ERA5 and scatterometer wind data provided similar accuracy of the generated wave fields, as expressed in the error statistics, which are very close to each other, but in the case of extreme events, the scatterometer data reveals more intense winds and consequently lead to sea states with higher significant wave height. This is more visible in the Azores area than in Madeira. The results demonstrate that, in general, the significant wave height is well reproduced by SWAN.

Water droplets sitting between wires are ubiquitous in nature and industry, often showing irregular (non-spherical) droplet shapes. To understand their topological singularity and evaporation mechanism, measuring volume changes of irregular water droplets is essential but highly challenging for small-volume water droplets. Here we experimentally explore topological heterogeneity and evaporation dynamics for irregular water droplets between wires with four-dimensional X-ray microtomography that directly provides images in three spatial dimensions as a function of time, enabling us to get three-dimensional structural and geometric information changes with time. We find that the topological heterogeneity of an irregular droplet is due to the local contact lines and the evaporation dynamics of an irregular droplet is governed by the effective contact radius. This study may offer an opportunity to understand how the topological heterogeneity contributes to the evaporation dynamics of irregular water droplets.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to inductively develop a model of cross-cultural adaptation for emerging adult self-initiated expatriates (SIEs). Design/methodology/approach Data were collected through semi-structured interviews with 18 Portuguese emerging adult SIEs, aged between 18 and 29 years, residing in the UK from 5 months to 2 years. The analysis of these interviews through a grounded theory, using computer-assisted qualitative data analysis software (Atlas.ti), allowed describing what constitutes participants’ cross-cultural adaptation and what are its determinants. Findings Five dimensions of cross-cultural adaptation emerged (cultural, emotional, social, practical and work), along with 18 determinants related with four different levels: personal, interpersonal, societal and situational. These determinants are related with the pre- and post-relocation phases of participants’ expatriation experience and some of them act as buffers, capturing a more integrative picture of the cross-cultural adaption process. Research limitations/implications In order to enhance the validity of the inductively identified relationships between cross-cultural adaptation and its determinants, the authors consider that they could be empirically tested. Originality/value This study points to several contributions in the fields of cross-cultural adaptation, emerging adulthood and self-initiated expatriation. By considering this study’s sample, the authors contributed to Farcas and Gonçalves’ (2016) call for more research focusing on emerging adult SIEs. In doing so, the authors simultaneously addressed the gap in the emerging adulthood literature regarding the focus on non-university samples of emerging adults. The methodology of this study can also be considered a contribution. By conducting interviews with emerging adult SIEs and analyzing them through a grounded theory approach, the authors were able to develop a model of cross-cultural adaptation. To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is the first model which was inductively developed, enabling a broad understanding of emerging adult SIEs’ cross-cultural adaptation, in terms of what constitutes and influences it.

This paper aims to assess the marine space availability for the nearshore and offshore wave energy exploration while avoiding conflict with any technical, environmental, legal or other use restriction. Within the available areas retrieved in a GIS environment, it is presented a method to evaluate the performance of various state-of-the-art Wave Energy Converter technologies in terms of the expected Power Output Capacity Factor and Capture Width, when potentially working in the characteristic sea states found on the selected areas. The method is applied to a case study in the Archipelago of Azores. The data of the wave resource utilized comes from a hindcast model refined down to a spatial resolution of 0.05° that makes possible the detailed analysis and spatial comparison of results at insular local scales. The results intend to provide stakeholders and decision-makers with meaningful information about the suitable locations for the wave energy exploration and about the most efficient converter devices in such locations for the potential deployment of a wave energy exploration facility.

An improved understanding of the present and future marine climatology is necessary for numerous activities, such as the operation of offshore structures, optimization of ship routes, and evaluation of wave energy resources. To produce global wave information, the WAVEWATCH III wave model was forced with wind and ice-cover data from an RCP8.5 EC-Earth system integration for two 30-year time slices. The first covering the periods from 1980 to 2009 represents the present climate, and the second, covering the periods from 2070 to 2099, represents the climate at the end of the twenty-first century. Descriptive empirical statistics of wind and wave parameters are obtained for different 30-year time slices, for the North Atlantic Ocean. Regarding wind, magnitude and direction will be used. For wave, significant wave height of the total sea, mean wave period, peak period, mean wave direction, and energy will be investigated. Changes from present to future climate are evaluated, regarding both mean and extreme events. Maps of these empirical statistics are presented. The long-term monthly joint distribution of significant wave heights and peak periods is generated. Changes from present to future climate are assessed, comparing the empirical statistics between time slices.

Workers on leave awaiting confirmation of coronavirus infection may experience worry and anticipatory stress.The objective of this study was to assess the anxiety levels of employees at a public university in the state of São Paulo who were put on leave due to suspected or confirmed SARS-CoV-2 infection and to correlate their anxiety levels with personal and work-related variables.This cross-sectional study used an online survey to collect data from employees who took a diagnostic test for COVID-19. The participants' anxiety level was measured using Greenberger and Padesky's Anxiety Inventory, while data on personal and work-related variables were collected through a socio-demographic questionnaire.Most of the 153 participants (76.5%) reported anxiety symptoms. COVID-19 infection was confirmed in 51%. The highest prevalence of severe anxiety (27%) was among employees who had indirect contact with COVID-19 patients. Three variables - being a woman, being a regular employee, and previous physical health problems - were responsible for a higher risk of anxiety.This study's findings indicate the need to protect the mental health of the university's employees.

Acute episodes of Schizophrenia and Schizoaffective Disorder often require hospitalizations and/or psychiatry emergency room (PER) visits, with significant economic burden. Long-acting injectables (LAI), such as the once-monthly Palmitate Paliperidone LAI (1MPP) are effective in suppressing symptoms and raise treatment adherence. This study is the first aimed at evaluating long-term efficacy of initiation of 1MPP. This was a mirror-image study with a total 10 year observational length. Sample was divided into five different groups according to time span of observation: 2,4,6,8, and 10 years. Number of participants per group was 162, 129, 95, 77 and 35, respectively. Main outcomes were number and length of hospitalizations and number of PER visit. Significant reductions in these outcomes after initiation of 1MPP were found in all groups. Subgroups consisting only of patients with full adherence were evaluated, and these had better outcomes. A cost evaluation was also performed, which demonstrated decreases every year, for all main outcomes. Sensitivity analysis in the 2-year group showed results in this time-frame are independent of gender, diagnosis, previous LAI or 1MPP initiation setting. Initiation of 1MPP reduces number and length of hospitalizations up to 5 years, decreasing associated costs. This study increases evidence supporting use of 1MPP in patients with Schizophrenia or Schizoaffective disorder.

Heath, Patrick/0000-0002-7939-4916; zanon, cristian/0000-0003-3822-5275; Al-Darmaki, Prof. Fatima/0000-0001-6452-0708 WOS: 000506996000001 PubMed: 31916468 This study evaluated the dimensionality, invariance, and reliability of the Depression, Anxiety, and Stress Scale-21 (DASS-21) within and across Brazil, Canada, Hong Kong, Romania, Taiwan, Turkey, United Arab Emirates, and the United States (N = 2,580) in college student samples. We used confirmatory factor analyses to compare the fit of four different factor structures of the DASS-21: a unidimensional model, a three-correlated-factors model, a higher order model, and a bifactor model. The bifactor model, with three specific factors (depression, anxiety, and stress) and one general factor (general distress), presented the best fit within each country. We also calculated ancillary bifactor indices of model-based dimensionality of the DASS-21 and model-based reliability to further examine the validity of the composite total and subscale scores and the use of unidimensional modeling. Results suggested the DASS-21 can be used as a unidimensional scale. Finally, measurement invariance of the best fitting model was tested across countries indicating configural invariance. The traditional three-correlated-factors model presented scalar invariance across Canada, Hong Kong, Romania, Taiwan, and the United States. Overall, these analyses indicate that the DASS-21 would best be used as a general score of distress rather than three separate factors of depression, anxiety, and stress, in the countries studied.

A 33-year hindcast is presented to quantify the wave energy resource available in the Atlantic coast of France, showing its availability and variability. The evaluation of the waves is performed using WAVEWATCH III model for the Atlantic Ocean and SWAN model for the western French coast. The hindcast was validated in a prior study, presenting good results. Given the growing need of a good description of the wave climate in any given location, this study intends to provide a more robust characterization of the wave climate, combining previous results with the new studies, leading to a 33-year hindcast for the western coast of France, focussing in the test site area of the SEM-REV location.

O presente artigo apresenta uma reflexão sobre como o conceito de inclusão é tratado nas normativas e discursos institucionais. Traz como cenário o campus Iguatu do Instituto Federal de Educação, Ciência e Tecnologia do Ceará (IFCE) para ilustrar por meio de exemplos concretos como se efetiva ou não a inclusão quando alargada para um público distinto da pessoa com deficiência. Aborda, embora de forma breve e incipiente, como o significado de inconsciente se manifesta nas linguagens dos regulamentos, nas falas e práticas dos que detém poder decisório entre os atores que compõem a instituição. Remete o conceito de inclusão para a diversidade sexual, no intuito de perceber a escola como reprodutora ou não de preconceitos, discriminação e violação de direitos no processo educativo.

In the present study, the third-generation spectral wave models MIKE 21 BW, SWAN, and STWAVE are compared for the simulation of wave characteristics in shallow waters. The SWAN and STWAVE results were obtained from a previous study that compared their performance. The MIKE 21 BW results are now obtained with the purpose of comparing them with the previous two. Several target areas in the Portuguese coast were considered: Obidos Bay and Figueira da Foz, both located in the central part of the continental Portuguese coast; Leixoes Harbor, located in the north coast; and Sines Harbor, located in the west coast, south of Lisbon. Two types of stigma exist: public stigma and self-stigma. Scholars have argued that public stigma leads to self-stigma, and then self-stigma is the primary predictor of attitudes toward seeking psychological services. However, this assertion is largely limited to U.S. samples. The goal of this research was to provide a first step in understanding the relationship between public stigma, self-stigma, and attitudes toward seeking psychological services in international contexts (N = 3,276; Australia, Brazil, Canada, Hong Kong, Portugal, Romania, Taiwan, Turkey, United Arab Emirates, and United States). Using structural equation modeling, we found that self-stigma mediated the relationship between public stigma and attitudes toward seeking services among college students in each country and region. However, differences in path strengths emphasize the need to pay attention to the role of public and self-stigma on attitudes toward seeking psychological services throughout the world.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to present a programme developed and tested in Portugal under this new paradigm where young adults (18-30) and old adults (over 65) learn research skills together. Design/methodology/approach The structure of the learning experience consists in a six-month training course for lay people in research skills in three specific areas of family, mental health and intergenerational relationships. In order to apply the acquired research and intervention knowledge, participants work in intergenerational groups on a small research project. Findings Results from the first two editions of the programme indicate benefits of mutual reciprocity in the contribution to tackle ageism and trust between generations. Research limitations/implications The potential practice implications for this type of intergenerational programme are significant, considering the increasing aging population in Portugal and the high ageism present. However, the authors may ask if the encountered results are the same with another type of learning subject. Therefore, the authors recommend a replication of this study/programme in other fields. Practical implications An integrated active ageing goes from a senior cultural entertainment to a public policy intervention sustained over time, reducing costs in terms of health, education and social services. Social implications Ageism, that is to say discrimination against people because of their age, is an enormous social problem. The new intergenerational learning paradigm can help to address this by emphasizing the importance of the intergroup contact between generations where each group can learn from and teach the other. Originality/value The authors can say that these first two editions of the Intergenerational University was a first outlook of how the authors can innovate learning processes at universities and bring research to the public. It is a methodology of social responsibility universities may adopt.

Foot ulceration is one of the most debilitating complications associated with diabetes, but its cause remains poorly understood. Several studies have been undertaken to understand healing kinetics or find possible therapies to enhance healing. However, few studies have been directed at understanding the immunological alterations that could influence wound healing in diabetes. In this study, we analysed the T-cell receptor (TCR) repertoire diversity in TCR-αβ+ T cells. We also analysed the distribution and phenotype of T cells obtained from the peripheral blood of healthy controls and diabetic individuals with or without foot ulcers. Our results showed that diabetic individuals, especially those with foot ulcers, have a significantly lower naive T-cell number and a poorer TCR-Vβ repertoire diversity. We also showed that the reduced TCR-Vβ repertoire diversity in diabetic individuals was mainly owing to the accumulation of effector T cells, the major source of tumour necrosis factor-α production, which was even more pronounced in patients with acute foot ulceration. Moreover, the expression of several inflammatory chemokine receptors was significantly reduced in diabetic patients. In conclusion, effector T-cell accumulation and TCR repertoire diversity reduction appear to precede the development of foot ulcers. This finding may open new immunological therapeutic possibilities and provide a new prognostic tool in diabetic wound care.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to understand how the Institute of Public and Social Policies could be useful for Portuguese society in terms of post-graduate training in the area of aging. Design/methodology/approach – The authors have conducted two focus groups (n=11), one with professionals of one large and three medium size social organizations, and the other with managers of three large, two medium and two small size social, health and civil rights organizations which support the elderly population. While the specific aim of the first focus group was to identify the aging training needs of professionals, who work with assistance/support to the elderly population, the aim of the second group was to identify the training interests of the retired or pre-retired elderly population. Findings – The results show on the one hand professional’s main challenges in working with elderly population in Portugal, their training needs and what exactly could be an adequate training for them in the area of aging as compared to the existing ones, and on the other hand who are the strongly committed elderly people, what are their training needs and what could exactly be for them an adequate training in the area of aging as compared to the existing ones. Research limitations/implications – The authors can conclude that both social professionals and senior population in Portugal have a need for a post-graduate training in the area of aging. Practical implications – Only by humanization at multilevel and a specific training for professionals and for families will we be able to deliver the opportunities and support that the citizens will need to enable them to age well across the life course. Social implications – Given the rapidly changing and complex demography of Portugal it is essential to give attention to training in rethinking the support of the elderly population in Portugal. Originality/value – The authors need to develop empowerment and social inclusion of the elderly population in the society.

The objective of the present work is to evaluate two wave models, SWAN and STWAVE, considering various coastal areas with different bathymetric features. Although both models are based on the spectrum concept and integrate the action balance equation over the computational domain using rectangular grids, there are also fundamental differences between them induced by the propagation schemes implemented and also by the different formulations considered for the basic source terms. This European guideline for the diagnosis and treatment of insomnia was developed by a task force of the European Sleep Research Society, with the aim of providing clinical recommendations for the management of adult patients with insomnia. The guideline is based on a systematic review of relevant meta-analyses published till June 2016. The target audience for this guideline includes all clinicians involved in the management of insomnia, and the target patient population includes adults with chronic insomnia disorder. The GRADE (Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation) system was used to grade the evidence and guide recommendations. The diagnostic procedure for insomnia, and its co-morbidities, should include a clinical interview consisting of a sleep history (sleep habits, sleep environment, work schedules, circadian factors), the use of sleep questionnaires and sleep diaries, questions about somatic and mental health, a physical examination and additional measures if indicated (i.e. blood tests, electrocardiogram, electroencephalogram; strong recommendation, moderate-to high-quality evidence). Polysomnography can be used to evaluate other sleep disorders if suspected (i.e. periodic limb movement disorder, sleep-related breathing disorders), in treatment-resistant insomnia, for professional at-risk populations and when substantial sleep state misperception is suspected (strong recommendation, high-quality evidence). Cognitive behavioural therapy for insomnia is recommended as the first-line treatment for chronic insomnia in adults of any age (strong recommendation, high-quality evidence). A pharmacological intervention can be offered if cognitive behavioural therapy for insomnia is not sufficiently effective or not available. Nowadays, social networks are, in a technological level, one of the most important forms of communication, and are one of the most modern formats of connection between companies and their employees, as well, as a more active form of the companies to reach their customers. The online social network Facebook brings together approximately one billion users worldwide, according to the organization itself, and in Portugal, is the Website with the highest number of page views per month. Therefore, this article sought to verify how the gyms (was studied several pages gyms), behave in Online use of social networks, for communication between themselves and their employees, as with its members and future members. Through an online questionnaire directed to people who use and are familiar with Online Social Networks, sought to check what kind of Online Social Networks the respondents use, particularly Facebook, and if they use the same to search events in gyms that they attend. The work carried out has shown that people being familiar with Facebook, still do not use it to research information related to their physical activities.

In the present paper a hindcast system is applied to the analysis of the Atlantic European coast as a whole with specific nestings for sites of interest in each country. The areas included in this study were: Ireland west coast, UK South Western coast, France west coast, northern Spain and Canary Islands and Portugal's continental coast. Two contemporary spectral models were used: WaveWatch III for wave generation, covering almost the entire North Atlantic basin, which outputs are then used as boundary conditions for SWAN which simulates wave transformation in coastal areas. Wind fields were taken from the ERA Interim data base. Results are validated against buoy data. These validations allowed a reformulation, when needed, of the model's configurations in order to better tune its outcomes to the real data. Using the energy transport vectors given by SWAN, the wave power is afterwards calculated and an energy resource assessment is done for a period of several years.

A numerical study of the wave energy distribution around Canary Islands is presented. For this study the WAVEWATCH III model is used to generate waves for the entire North Atlantic basin and the SWAN model is used to determine the transformation of the waves in the Canary Islands. The model results are validated with measured data from the Gran Canaria buoy, over a three-year period, and satellite data for the period of one year. The computed results show a good agreement with data from buoy and satellites. Wave energy resource climatology is evaluated and characterized in terms of probability of occurrence of sea states for the three year period.

We report 12 cases of aggressive natural killer (NK) cell neoplasms diagnosed in Portugal, with emphasis on flow cytometry. Ten patients had extranodal NK/T cell lymphoma, nasal type and two had aggressive NK cell leukemia, and seven were men and five were women, with a median age of 50 years. NK cells brightly expressed the CD56 adhesion molecule and CD94 lectin type killer receptor and had an activation-related HLA-DR+ CD45RA+ CD45RO+ immunophenotype, in most cases. In contrast, dim CD16 expression was found in a minor proportion of cases, whereas CD57 and the CD158a and CD158e1 killer immunoglobulin-like receptors were negative. One-third of cases showed a hyperploid DNA content and nearly all had a very high S-phase proliferative rate. The phenotypic features of the neoplastic NK cells would suggest that they represent the transformed counterpart of the CD56 + bright NK cells that circulate in normal blood.
