OBJECTIVE Stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) is the mainstay treatment for brain metastases (BMs) from lung cancer. In recent years, immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) have been applied to metastatic lung cancer and have contributed to improved outcomes. The authors investigated whether SRS with concurrent ICIs for lung cancer BMs prolongs overall survival (OS), improves intracranial disease control, and raises safety concerns. METHODS Patients who underwent SRS for lung cancer BMs at Aizawa Hospital between January 2015 and December 2021 were included. Concurrent use of ICIs was defined as no more than 3 months between SRS and ICI administration. The two treatment groups, which had a similar likelihood of receiving concurrent ICIs, were generated by propensity score matching (PSM; match ratio 1:1) based on 11 potential prognostic covariates. Patient survival and intracranial disease control were compared between the groups with and without concurrent ICIs (ICI + SRS vs SRS) by time-dependent analyses, taking into account competing events. RESULTS Five hundred eighty-five patients with lung cancer BM (494 with non–small cell lung cancer and 91 with small cell lung cancer) were eligible. Of those patients, 93 (16%) received concurrent ICIs. Two groups, each with 89 patients (ICI + SRS group and SRS group), were generated by PSM. The 1-year survival rates of the ICI + SRS and SRS groups after the initial SRS were 65% and 50% and the median survival times were 16.9 and 12.0 months, respectively (HR 0.62, 95% CI 0.44–0.87, p = 0.006). The 2-year cumulative neurological mortality rates were 12% and 16%, respectively (HR 0.55, 95% CI 0.28–1.10, p = 0.091). The 1-year intracranial progression-free survival rates were 35% and 26% (HR 0.73, 95% CI 0.53–0.99, p = 0.047). The 2-year local failure rates were 12% and 18% (HR 0.72, 95% CI 0.32–1.61, p = 0.43) and the 2-year distant recurrence rates were 51% and 60% (HR 0.82, 95% CI 0.55–1.23, p = 0.34). Severe adverse radiation events (Common Terminology Criteria for Adverse Events [CTCAE] grade 4) occurred in 1 patient in each group, and CTCAE grade 3 toxicities were observed in 3 patients in the ICI + SRS group and in 5 in the SRS group (OR 1.53, 95% CI 0.35–7.7, p = 0.75). CONCLUSIONS The present study found that SRS with concurrent ICIs for patients with lung cancer BMs was associated with longer survival and durable intracranial disease control, with no apparent increase in treatment-related adverse events.

This study aims to examine memorable tourism experiences and their role in subsequent well-being. To achieve this, we carried out longitudinal surveys during the winter vacation period, recruiting participants via an online marketing research company. A total of 230 participants completed questionnaires comprising questions seeking demographic information and psychological scales at four time points so that the changes in their well-being could be assessed. Our findings indicate that having a memorable experience during a vacation had positive influences not only on the recovery experience at that time, but also on the recovery experience during subsequent daily life. Although the recovery experience during and after the vacation was profoundly involved, it should be noted that only the recovery experience after returning to everyday life was further associated with individuals' wellbeing. The results demonstrate new findings on how extraordinary experiences during vacations influence commonplace activities.

Background: The terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, on the World Trade Center (WTC) led to intense fires and a massive dense cloud of toxic gases and suspended pulverized debris. In the subsequent years, following the attack and cleanup efforts, a cluster of chronic health conditions emerged among First Responders (FR) who were at Ground Zero for prolonged periods and were repeatedly exposed to high levels of WTC particulate matter (WTCPM). Among those are neurological complications which may increase the risk for the development of Alzheimer’s disease (AD) later in life. Objective: We hypothesize that WTCPM dust exposure affects the immune cross-talking between the periphery and central nervous systems that may induce brain permeability ultimately promoting AD-type phenotype. Methods: 5XFAD and wild-type mice were intranasally administered with WTCPM dust collected at Ground Zero within 72 h after the attacks. Y-maze assay and novel object recognition behavioral tests were performed for working memory deficits and learning and recognition memory, respectively. Transcriptomic analysis in the blood and hippocampus was performed and confirmed by RT qPCR. Results: Mice exposed to WTCPM dust exhibited a significant impairment in spatial and recognition short and long-term memory. Furthermore, the transcriptomic analysis in the hippocampal formation and blood revealed significant changes in genes related to immune-inflammatory responses, and blood-brain barrier disruption. Conclusion: These studies suggest a putative peripheral-brain immune inflammatory cross-talking that may potentiate cognitive decline, identifying for the first time key steps which may be therapeutically targetable in future studies in WTC FR.

Aims The objectives of this study were to investigate the patient characteristics and mortality of Vancouver type B periprosthetic femoral fractures (PFF) subgroups divided into two groups according to femoral component stability and to compare postoperative clinical outcomes according to treatment in Vancouver type B2 and B3 fractures. Methods A total of 126 Vancouver type B fractures were analyzed from 2010 to 2019 in 11 associated centres' database (named TRON). We divided the patients into two Vancouver type B subtypes according to implant stability. Patient demographics and functional scores were assessed in the Vancouver type B subtypes. We estimated the mortality according to various patient characteristics and clinical outcomes between the open reduction internal fixation (ORIF) and revision arthroplasty (revision) groups in patients with unstable subtype. Results The one-year mortality rate of the stable and unstable subtype of Vancouver type B was 9.4% and 16.4%. Patient demographic factors, including residential status and pre-injury mobility were associated with mortality. There was no significant difference in mortality between patients treated with ORIF and Revision in either Vancouver B subtype. Patients treated with revision had significantly higher Parker Mobility Score (PMS) values (5.48 vs 3.43; p = 0.00461) and a significantly lower visual analogue scale (VAS) values (1.06 vs 1.94; p = 0.0399) for pain than ORIF in the unstable subtype. Conclusion Among patients with Vancouver type B fractures, frail patients, such as those with worse scores for residential status and pre-injury mobility, had a high mortality rate. There was no significant difference in mortality between patients treated with ORIF and those treated with revision. However, in the unstable subtype, the PMS and VAS values at the final follow-up examination were significantly better in patients who received revision. Based on postoperative activities of daily life, we therefore recommend evision in instances when either treatment option is feasible. Cite this article: Bone Jt Open 2023;4(1):38–46.

The Geriatric Nutritional Risk Index (GNRI) has been reported as a screening tool to assess the nutrition-related risk with mortality in older patients and those with the various diseases. However, the prognostic value of GNRI in metastatic renal cell carcinoma (mRCC) patients receiving nivolumab therapy remains unclear.Fifty-six consecutive patients with mRCC receiving nivolumab between September 2013 and August 2020 at our institution were retrospectively analyzed. The survival outcomes and prognostic factors associated with overall survival (OS) were statistically analyzed.Thirteen and forty-three patients were classified with low (GNRI92) and high (GNRI ≥ 92) GNRI, respectively. Patients with low GNRI demonstrated significantly shorter OS (GNRI was a significant prognostic biomarker in mRCC patients receiving nivolumab.

Bone remodeling plays a central role in the maintenance of bone homeostasis. Our group has established an in vitro system by which the cellular events during bone remodeling can be observed longitudinally. This study used this system to quantitatively analyze osteoblasts, osteoclasts, and matrices to elucidate their temporal changes and correlations.Osteoblasts from EGFP mice were cultured to form calcified nodules, followed by co-culture with bone marrow macrophages from Tnfrsf11aResorption and replenishment of the matrix were observed at the same sites by 2 photon microscopy. Gross quantification revealed that matrix and osteoblast parameters decreased in the resorption phase and increased in the formation phase, while osteoclast parameters showed the opposite pattern. When one field of view was divided into 16 regions of interest (ROIs) and correlations between parameters were analyzed in each ROI, decreased and increased matrix volumes were moderately correlated. Parameters of matrices and osteoblasts, and those of matrices and osteoclasts exhibited moderate correlations, while those of osteoblasts and osteoclasts were only weakly correlated.Several correlations between cells and matrix during remodeling were demonstrated quantitatively. This system may be a powerful tool for the research of bone remodeling.

In recent years, immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) have been applied to metastatic RCC and have contributed to improved outcomes. The authors investigated whether SRS with concurrent ICIs for RCC BM prolongs overall survival (OS) and improves intracranial disease control and whether there are any safety concerns. METHODS Patients who underwent SRS for RCC BMs at the authors’ institution between January 2010 and January 2021 were included. Concurrent use of ICIs was defined as no more than 3 months between SRS and ICI administration. The time-to-event analysis of OS and intracranial progression-free survival (IC-PFS) between the groups with and without ICIs (ICI+SRS and SRS, respectively) was performed using inverse probability of treatment weighting (IPTW) based on propensity scores (PSs) to control for selection bias. Four baseline covariates (Karnofsky Performance Scale score, extracranial metastases, hemoglobin, and number of BMs) were selected to calculate PSs. RESULTS In total, 57 patients with 147 RCC BMs were eligible. The median OS for all patients was 9.1 months (95% CI 6.0–18.9 months), and the median IC-PFS was 4.4 months (95% CI 3.1–6.8 months). Twelve patients (21%) received concurrent ICIs. The IPTW-adjusted 1-year OS rates in the ICI+SRS and SRS groups were 66% and 38%, respectively (HR 0.30, 95% C 0.13–0.69; p = 0.005), and the IPTW-adjusted 1-year IC-PFS rates were 52% and 16%, respectively (HR 0.30, 95% CI 0.14–0.62; p = 0.001). Severe tumor hemorrhage (Common Terminology Criteria for Adverse Events [CTCAE] grade 4 or 5) occurred immediately after SRS in 2 patients in the SRS group. CTCAE grade 2 or 3 toxicity was observed in 2 patients in the ICI+SRS group and 5 patients in the SRS group. CONCLUSIONS Although the patient number was small and the analysis preliminary, the present study found that SRS with concurrent ICIs for RCC BM patients prolonged survival and provided durable intracranial disease control, with no apparent increase in treatment-related adverse events.

We attempted to determine the indications and limitations of steroid therapy as the first-line therapy in patients with autoimmune pancreatitis (AIP) with cyst formation (ACF).This Japanese multicenter survey was conducted to examine the merits/demerits of steroid treatment as the initial therapy for ACF.Data of a total of 115 patients with ACF were analyzed. Complete remission was achieved in 86% (86/100) of patients who had received steroid treatment, but only 33.3% (5/15) of patients who had not received steroids. Relapse after the remission (n = 86) occurred in 7.6% (6/86) of patients who had received steroid therapy, but 40% (2/5) of patients who had not received steroid therapy. Multivariate analysis identified adoption of the wait and watch approach without steroid treatment (odds ratio = 0.126, P .001) as a significant and independent negative predictor of remission of ACF. As for predictors of relapse, the presence of varix (odds ratio = 5.83, P = .036) was identified as an independent risk factor.Steroid therapy plays an important role as first-line therapy in AIP patients with pancreatic cyst formation, however, varix formation, besides the diameter of the cyst(s), is a risk factor for refractoriness to steroid therapy.

Background Plants invest photosynthates in construction and maintenance of their structures and functions. Such investments are considered costs. These costs are recovered by the CO2 assimilation rate (A) in the leaves, and thus A is regarded as the immediate, short-term benefit. In photosynthesizing leaves, CO2 diffusion from the air to the carboxylation site is hindered by several structural and biochemical barriers. CO2 diffusion from the intercellular air space to the chloroplast stroma is obstructed by the mesophyll resistance. The inverses is the mesophyll conductance (gm). Whether various plants realize an optimal gm, and how much investment is needed for a relevant gm, remain unsolved. Scope This review examines relationships among leaf construction costs (CC), leaf maintenance costs (MC) and gm in various plants under diverse growth conditions. Through a literature survey, we demonstrate a strong linear relationship between leaf mass per area (LMA) and leaf CC. The overall correlation of CC vs. gm across plant phylogenetic groups is weak, but significant trends are evident within specific groups and/or environments. Investment in CC is necessary for an increase in LMA and mesophyll cell surface area (Smes). This allows the leaf to accommodate more chloroplasts, thus increasing A. However, increases in LMA and/or Smes often accompany other changes, such as cell wall thickening, which diminishes gm. Such factors that make the correlations of CC and gm elusive are identified. Conclusions For evaluation of the contribution of gm to recover CC, leaf life span is the key factor. The estimation of MC in relation to gm, especially in terms of costs required to regulate aquaporins, could be essential for efficient control of gm over the short term. Over the long term, costs are mainly reflected in CC, while benefits also include ultimate fitness attributes in terms of integrated carbon gain over the life of a leaf, plant survival and reproductive output.

Current dosimetry protocols specify an effective point of measurement (EPOM) shift of 0.6r for a cylindrical ionization chamber in photon beams. However, prior studies have reported that this shift was excessively large. The objective of this study was to experimentally evaluate the EPOM shifts in photon beams for cylindrical ionization chambers, which are widely used in clinical practice, and thus determine the appropriate EPOM shift. A microdiamond detector, which is a semiconductor detector with a small sensitive volume, was used as a reference detector, and the EPOM shifts of 11 types of cylindrical ionization chambers were evaluated at 6 MV and 10 MV. The depth shift from the percent depth dose (PDD) of the reference detector to that of the evaluated chamber was calculated using the least-squares method and was defined as the EPOM shift. The EPOM shift of the 10 MV condition was slightly larger than that of the 6 MV condition. However, because this trend was not observed for all chambers, the results of the two energies were averaged, and the EPOM shifts were determined to be 0.33r-0.43r (± 0.05) for 10 types of ionization chambers, and 0.03r (± 0.03) for the A1SL chamber. The shifts for all ionization chambers were smaller than 0.6r, indicating that the recommended EPOM shifts were overestimated and the absorbed dose was underestimated at the calibration depth. Hence, the appropriate EPOM shift of the 10 types of ionization chambers was 0.4r (the geometric center of the A1SL chamber), with a dose uncertainty of 0.05%.

Currently, several types of geospatial data are provided as open data and/or map tile data. This implies that geospatial data have become more barrier-free than older data with traditional licenses and formats. In this study, we used open geospatial data to develop a client-side web mapping system for assessment of site suitability for vineyards. As the research area for testing the system, we selected Nagano Prefecture, where many farmers recently started viticulture. The data used in the system are geology, soil, slope gradient, slope aspect, annual mean temperature, and annual maximum and minimum temperatures. These data were converted to a Grid PNG tile, which was developed by The Geological Survey of Japan, National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology. FOSS4G tools, such as QGIS, TileMill, and MBUtil were used to prepare Grid PNG tile data. Map algebra functions were implemented using the WebGL. Web mapping systems developed in this research do not require server-side systems and/or middleware and can be operated using only a web browser. This means that various entities can be operated on the same system at low cost, or on a free web service such as GitHub pages.

Microorganisms often live in symbiosis with their hosts, and some are considered mutualists, where all species involved benefit from the interaction. How free-living microorganisms have evolved to become mutualists is unclear. Here we report an experimental system in which non-symbiotic Escherichia coli evolves into an insect mutualist. The stinkbug Plautia stali is typically associated with its essential gut symbiont, Pantoea sp., which colonizes a specialized symbiotic organ. When sterilized newborn nymphs were infected with E. coli rather than Pantoea sp., only a few insects survived, in which E. coli exhibited specific localization to the symbiotic organ and vertical transmission to the offspring. Through transgenerational maintenance with P. stali, several hypermutating E. coli lines independently evolved to support the host’s high adult emergence and improved body colour; these were called ‘mutualistic’ E. coli. These mutants exhibited slower bacterial growth, smaller size, loss of flagellar motility and lack of an extracellular matrix. Transcriptomic and genomic analyses of ‘mutualistic’ E. coli lines revealed independent mutations that disrupted the carbon catabolite repression global transcriptional regulator system. Each mutation reproduced the mutualistic phenotypes when introduced into wild-type E. coli, confirming that single carbon catabolite repression mutations can make E. coli an insect mutualist. These findings provide an experimental system for future work on host–microbe symbioses and may explain why microbial mutualisms are omnipresent in nature.

The frequent stops of transit buses significantly block lanes on roads and generate vehicle queues behind. The passenger cars traveling behind buses may be stuck in the queues and miss the green light in the downstream intersection. They will be very tempted to make lane changes to avoid the stopping vehicles efficiently. However, without knowing the information of bus stations and traffic signals, it is very difficult and dangerous for the queued vehicles to make lane changes at last minute. In this paper, an optimal dynamic path planning system will be developed to assist passenger cars avoid buses so as to improve their mobility on local roads. The system utilizes connected vehicles to receive stop information, including times, duration, and locations, of buses, and the signal timing information from intersections. The information is applied to predict the delay of connected vehicles caused by the buses and intersections. The system also estimate optimal paths for the target vehicles to make lane changes and overpass the buses and the downstream intersection to minimize its travel time delay. In this paper, both synthetic and realistic examples are designed with microscopic traffic simulations to evaluate the performance of the proposed system. The results indicate that the travel time delay for connected vehicles can be reduced by up to 35%. In addition, a sensitivity analysis of the market penetration rates of connected vehicles and demand levels is conducted to understand the benefits and reliability of the system under different stages of the connected environment.

The current hypotheses for the mechanisms of photosystem II (PSII) photodamage in vivo remain split on the primary damage site. However, most researchers have considered that PSII is inhibited by a sole mechanism and that the photoinhibited PSII consists of one population. In this perspective, we propose ‘the mixed population hypothesis’, in which there are four PSII populations: PSII with active/inactive Mn4CaO5 oxygen-evolving complex respectively with functional/damaged primary quinone (QA) reduction activity. This hypothesis provides a new insight into not only the PSII photoinhibition/photoprotection studies but also the repair process. We discuss our new data implying that the repair rate differs in the respective PSII populations.

X-ray microscopes adopting computed tomography enable nondestructive 3D visualization of biological specimens at micron-level resolution without conventional 2D serial sectioning that is a destructive/laborious method and is routinely used for analyzing renal biopsy in clinical diagnosis of kidney diseases. Here we applied a compact commercial system of laboratory-based X-ray microscope to observe a resin-embedded osmium-stained 1-mm strip of a mouse kidney piece as a model of renal biopsy, toward a more efficient diagnosis of kidney diseases. A reconstructed computed tomography image from several hours of data collection using CCD detector allowed us to unambiguously segment a single nephron connected to a renal corpuscle, which was consistent with previous reports using serial sectioning. Histogram analysis on the segmented nephron confirmed that the proximal and distal tubules were distinguishable on the basis of their X-ray opacities. A 3D rendering model of the segmented nephron visualized a convoluted structure of renal tubules neighboring the renal corpuscle and a branched structure of efferent arterioles. Furthermore, another data collection using scientific complementary metal-oxide semiconductor detector with a much shorter data acquisition time of 15 min provided similar results from the same samples. These results suggest a potential application of the compact laboratory-based X-ray microscope to analyze mouse renal biopsy.

False Information can lead to chaos and destruction of lives and properties, as was the case during the EndSARS protests in October 2020. Young people took to social media to campaign for the scrapping of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) and for better governance in the country. Social media, especially Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram were used to garner the support of people to join the protests across the country. The use of social media platforms gave rise to a proliferation of unverified information in the social space. As events unfolded, some reports were confirmed as fake and some were quoted out of context. Different scholars have proffered solutions to mitigating the spread of false information but less attention has been paid to the combined role of the mainstream and social media. This study content analysed available reports of the EndSARS protests that were tagged fake and found out that rumour accounted for the most reported false information type. This implies that the mainstream media scale up their reporting to enable people get more authentic information. This study proposed a hybrid model factoring in the reporting role of the mainstream media as a potential strategy to mitigate false information in the media.

Young people are avid social media users and, as such, might be prone to mental health issues because of the comparison of the kind of life they see on social media. The study was anchored on the social comparison theory; hence, it investigated the influence of social media on the mental health of Afe Babalola University undergraduates. The survey design with a sample of 382 was chosen from the population of 8500 students. The study adopted the purposive sampling technique as respondents were chosen based on their usage of social media. It was discovered that increased use of social media leads to deeper social life suffering in the sense that addicted users interact more and value social media friends more than real-life interactions with family and friends. The study also revealed a moderate correlation between the increase in social media addiction and the increase in the mental health of users. Thus, social media significantly influences the mental health of undergraduates in the university.

To investigate the tumor shrinkage patterns of patients with metastatic renal cell carcinoma treated with nivolumab monotherapy.Forty-four consecutive patients with metastatic renal cell carcinoma treated with nivolumab monotherapy (81 metastatic and four primary lesions) between September 2013 and December 2020 were retrospectively analyzed. The tumor shrinkage rate of individual visceral and lymph node metastatic lesions and the primary site lesions treated with nivolumab monotherapy, as well as the association between overall survival and pretreatment tumor size, were statistically assessed.Pretreatment tumor size for the total and individual target lesions, which included kidneys, lungs, pancreas, and lymph nodes, were not correlated with tumor shrinkage rate. The tumor shrinkage rate was found to have no significant association with pretreatment tumor size between any organ. In addition, there is no significant difference in tumor shrinkage rate between larger (median value) and smaller (median value) pretreatment tumor size in any organ. Finally, there was no significant difference in overall survival between larger and smaller pretreatment tumor size.Pretreatment tumor size was not associated with the tumor shrinkage rate and overall survival in nivolumab monotherapy.

To clarify the diagnostic performance of the three-dimensional reconstructed virtual image (3D-RVI) in evaluating RENAL nephrometry score (RENAL-NS).This study included 130 patients who underwent preoperative contrast-enhanced computed tomography followed by partial nephrectomy for renal tumors suggestive of renal cell carcinoma. RENAL-NS was calculated prior to the surgery, and tumor resection was performed referring to the score. We retrospectively reviewed preoperative contrast-enhanced computed tomography images. We calculated the inter-observer variability of RENAL-NS using 3D-RVI vs two-dimensional (2D) imaging and compared the ability of RENAL-NS using 3D-RVI vs 2D imaging to predict the risk of opening of the urinary collecting system. We also compared the two modalities for the time required to evaluate RENAL-NS.RENAL-NS evaluated using 3D-RVI showed a higher inter-observer agreement compared to 2D-imaging (rUsing 3D-RVI improves the accuracy, reliability and efficiency of RENAL-NS evaluation in preoperative assessment and can play an important role in preoperative assessment and intraoperative navigation.

The inability to pass stool for a prolonged period can lead to the formation of fecaliths, which occurs most often in the colon or rectum. Although large fecaliths can lead to serious or life-threatening complications, the detailed process of their formation is unknown. This report describes a 65-year-old woman who presented with melena due to ischemic proctitis caused by a large fecalith. On computed tomography, the fecalith showed a unique multilayered calcification sign. We successfully dismantled and removed the fecalith transanally, assisted by a traction method using a balloon catheter. A review of imaging studies from 6 years ago revealed the growth of the fecalith over the previous year and provided an insight into the mechanism underlying the development of large fecaliths.

Caste development in social insects requires the coordination of molting and metamorphosis during postembryonic development. In termites, i.e., hemimetabolous eusocial insects, caste fate is determined during postembryonic development. However, it is not fully understood how the mechanisms of molting/metamorphosis are regulated in the course of differentiation between reproductive and sterile castes. In termites, only reproductives derived from alates are imagos and other sterile castes (including developmentally-terminal soldier caste) are basically juveniles or nymphs. Furthermore, supplementary reproductives that appear when the original queens and kings die or become senescent, exhibit larval features such as winglessness, and are called neotenics. Therefore, the question of whether neotenics are larvae or imagos is still under debate. In this study, by inducing female neotenic differentiation in a damp-wood termite Hodotermopsis sjostedti, morphological investigations together with juvenile hormone (JH) quantification and expression/functional analyses of genes responsible for molting and/or metamorphosis were carried out. JH titer and expression of one of the downstream genes (Kr-h1) were shown to be temporarily lowered, but increased just prior to the molt into neotenics, while consistently lowered in imaginal molt (i.e., alate differentiation). In contrast, ecdysone-related genes (EcR and E93) were upregulated at both neotenic and alate differentiation, suggesting that the heterochronic actions of ecdysone and JH lead the neotenic differentiation. Moreover, expression analyses, supported by reverse genetic experiments, showed that EcR and E93 were specifically upregulated in genital sternites (EcR and E93) and ovaries (E93) and required for the development of imaginal characters. These results suggest that the resultant mosaic phenotype of female neotenics is due to modular responses of different body parts to hormonal actions.

Disaster risk reduction education (DRRE) is a strategy to mitigate the harmful effects of disasters. The implementation of DRRE in schools is on the rise, and Web GIS technology in DRRE is becoming increasingly prevalent. However, little knowledge exists about whether students can improve their understanding of disaster risk reduction (DRR) through Web GIS technology and which factors affect their learning of web hazard maps. This study has provided materials and curricula for DRR education in Chinese and Japanese high schools, and utilized them eight times in the classroom between 2020 and 2022. These classes had three forms of implementation due to the COVID-19 pandemic: online, onsite, and online-onsite mixed. The students first answered a pretest. Then they learned about DRR using the explanatory web pages and the web hazard maps with answering quizzes shown on the pages. After that, they answered a posttest and a questionnaire. Most students show improved results after using the digital DRR materials. It is pronounced for the onsite implementations, whereas the online-onsite mixed implementation was less effective. The pretest scores for the implementations using local disaster cases are low, but the subsequent improvement is significant. The ability of students to utilize electronic devices affects the learning of GIS-related content rather than other aspects. The frequency of daily usage of online maps and daily attention to disaster prevention and mitigation affect learning the entire materials. Increasing the use of online hazard maps is a key to realizing social DRR.

In various fields of science and technology research in Japan, a liaison group of gender-equal academic associations was established by several academic associations around 2000. Since then, the liaison group has become fully active, and the number of participating academic associations has increased, now exceeding 100. JpGU has participated in these activities since their inception. Since the earth sciences encompass many fields, the first step was to recruit people who could cooperate with JpGU through the academic associations that are members of JpGU. JpGU became a governing committee in charge of the activities of the Liaison Committee at 6th term. The activities of the society include a survey of the current status of female researchers through a large-scale questionnaire once every five years and make proposals and requests based on the results of these survey, and the development of the next generation through the sub-activities (summer school for junior and senior high school girls) for the development of a new generation of female researchers in particulars, etc. JpGU also has done its own activities such as career support counseling during JpGU meeting and made logos representing diversity of session conveners. In this presentation, we will list and briefly introduce the footprints of those who have cooperated in the promotion of diversity, equality, and inclusion through JpGU and liaison groups as a record at this point.

Although GIS technologies have been utilized in many fields, including geoscience and geography, obtaining skills in GIS operation is still challenging. Effective GIS operation requires geographical and cartographic knowledge such as the principles of map projection, techniques to use computers and related devices, and expertise in graphic, spreadsheet, and database software. In addition, various recent concepts and technologies, such as AR, VR, UAVs, web mapping, and 3D printing, have been combined with today’s GIS. Therefore, comprehensive GIS education is crucial for fostering scientists with GIS skills.We have been developing methodologies and materials for GIS education to address this issue. They include 1) online open-source materials for learning how to use GIS software for various applications, 2) web-based online GIS to learn applications of GIS for understanding disaster risks, 3) web pages to learn the basics of Python programming relevant to GIS, and 4) materials for learning the utilization of UAVs, 3D printers, AR, and VR in connection with GIS. This presentation outlines our activities and discusses their implications to provide future perspectives.In 2022, a subject called General Geography with an emphasis on GIS became compulsory in Japanese senior high schools (10 to 12 grades) due to government educational reform. Because students usually select what to major in universities during high school, attracting high-school students' attention to GIS and related geoscientific and geographical issues is essential for the future development of geoscience and geography. Therefore, the targets of our activities are both university and high school students.

Salt weathering of building stone is a major cause of loss of historic structures. Many geoheritage sites including stone heritage and geomorphosites have been damaged by this process. In nearly two centuries, research and observation relating salt weathering have accumulated. These studies could be organized focusing on theories, mechanisms, experimental methods, and research tools. This presentation introduce by reviewing many, though not enough, studies to summarize the research history of salt weathering, including the results of subsequent studies, especially focused on an important mechanism of salt weathering, crystallization pressure. Since the concept of crystallization was first proposed in the early 20th century, many equations have been proposed. However, in order to apply them correctly, it is important to consider the type of salt weathering and the surrounding environment, as well as the type and properties of salt and rock (rock properties), and to select and apply the proposed model according to the situation. Although salt weathering studies have been done in a wide variety of research fields, appropriate collaboration among disciplines will lead to meaningful conservation and will be used for practical problems in the future.

Background Patients with severe acute kidney injury (AKI) who require continuous venovenous hemodiafiltration (CVVHDF) in intensive care unit (ICU) are at high mortality risk. Little is known about clinical biomarkers for risk prediction, optimal initiation, and optimal discontinuation of CVVHDF. Methods This prospective observational study was conducted in seven university-affiliated ICUs. For urinary neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (NGAL) and plasma IL-6 measurements, samples were collected at initiation, 24 h, 48 h after, and CVVHDF discontinuation in adult patients with severe AKI. The outcomes were deaths during CVVHDF and CVVHDF dependence. Results A total number of 133 patients were included. Twenty-eight patients died without CVVHDF discontinuation (CVVHDF nonsurvivors). Urinary NGAL and plasma IL-6 at the CVVHDF initiation were significantly higher in CVVHDF nonsurvivors than in survivors. Among 105 CVVHDF survivors, 70 patients were free from renal replacement therapy (RRT) or death in the next 7 days after discontinuation (success group), whereas 35 patients died or needed RRT again (failure group). Urinary NGAL at CVVHDF discontinuation was significantly lower in the success group (93.8 ng/ml vs. 999 ng/ml, p Conclusions Urinary NGAL at CVVHDF initiation and discontinuation was associated with mortality and RRT dependence, respectively. The serial changes of urinary NGAL might also help predict the prognosis of patients with AKI on CVVHDF. Graphical Abstract
