The detailed chemical investigations of the South China Sea soft corals Sinularia tumulosa and Sinularia depressa, yielded two new compounds, namely tumulosterol A (1) and 11’-hydroxy-α-tocopherylquinone (3), along with four related known ones (2, 5–7). Their structures were determined by extensive spectroscopic analysis and comparison with the spectral data previously reported in the literature. In bioassays, compound 1 displayed significant cytotoxic effects against H1975 and MDA-MB-231 cells with IC50 values of 6.0 and 6.3 µM, respectively. In addition, compound 3 exhibited interesting inhibitory effect on lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced inflammatory responses in RAW264.7 cells with IC50 value of 9.5 µM.

Retrospective epidemiological study.To determine the characteristics of sports-related spinal cord injury (SCI) in China and assess changes in the trend of these injuries that may impact policy making.China Rehabilitation Research Center (CRRC), Beijing.Of the 2448 SCI cases reviewed, 6.7% (n = 164) were caused by sport- and recreation-related accidents. They were admitted to the CRRC between January 1, 2013 and December 31, 2019. We collected data on age, sex, etiology, the neurological level of injury, the American Spinal Injury Association (ASIA) Impairment Scale (AIS) scores on admission, and the neurological recovery results at discharge.Dancing (58.6%), followed by water sports (14.7%) and taekwondo (4.2%) were the leading etiologies. Of the SCIs caused by dancing, 27.1% of the individuals had incomplete injury, and of these, 57.7% showed improved neurological function. However, 72.9% had complete injury, and these individuals did not show any improvement in neurological function. Individuals with dance-related SCIs graded as A and D according to the AIS, showed no significant improvement in their motor function scores at the time of discharge. While the scores of those graded B and C increased significantly, there were no significant differences in the light touch and pin touch scores.The etiology of sports-related SCI in China has changed dramatically, with dancing replacing water sports as the primary cause of SCIs. Individuals with dance-related SCIs have a poor prognosis. In China, prevention of dance-related SCIs has become a priority.

This paper presents the history of the gramophone industry and Chinese records in pre-war Singapore, through exploring the position of Singapore in the global commercial networks of transnational gramophone enterprises, and the local consumption of Chinese music records. At the turn of the twentieth century, the emergence of gramophone companies in the United States and European countries enabled Chinese opera and music in different regional languages to be manufactured into records, and consumed as commodities by Chinese communities all around the globe. Shaped by multiple routes of trade and cultural connections, the Chinese records sold in Singapore were of diverse historical origins and regional languages that catered to the different Chinese dialect groups. By the 1920s and 1930s, the popularization of gramophones and Chinese records had engendered an unprecedented sonic experience in Singapore.

Organizations offering HIV prevention services have reported interruptions during the COVID-19 pandemic. The national extent of these interruptions and their public health impact remain largely unexplored.Using data from 60 state and local health departments, we compared HIV testing services outcomes in calendar years 2019 and 2020, including the number of Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)-funded HIV tests conducted, the percentage of persons with newly diagnosed HIV infection (ie, HIV positivity), and the percentage linked to HIV medical care within 30 days after new diagnoses (ie, linkage to care) using χ2 and robust Poisson models. We also assessed the independent associations between the pandemic period (ie, March-December 2020) and the number of COVID-19 cases with monthly HIV testing services outcomes using multivariable robust Poisson models.There was a 46.0% (P0.001) reduction in the number of CDC-funded HIV tests conducted in 2020 (n = 1,255,895) compared with 2019 (n = 2,324,421). Although there were fewer persons with newly diagnosed HIV in 2020 (n = 5581 vs. n = 7739 in 2019), HIV positivity was greater in 2020 (0.4% vs. 0.3% in 2019; adjusted prevalence ratio [aPR] = 1.33, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.05 to 1.69). When adjusting for the monthly number of COVID-19 cases, the pandemic period was associated with a 56% reduction in the number of monthly CDC-funded HIV tests (adjusted rate ratio = 0.44, 95% CI: 0.37 to 0.52) but 28% higher monthly HIV positivity (aPR = 1.28 95% CI: 1.16 to 1.41) and 10% higher linkage to care (aPR = 1.10, 95% CI: 1.02 to 1.18).Despite increased HIV positivity, a drastic reduction in the number of CDC-funded HIV tests was observed in 2020, affecting the ability to identify persons with newly diagnosed HIV. CDC and health departments will need to expand testing strategies to cover tests not conducted in 2020 while adapting to the continuing pandemic.A visual abstract is available for this article at: http://links.lww.com/QAI/B941.

Underwater images play a crucial role in various fields, including oceanographic engineering, marine exploitation, and marine environmental protection. However, the quality of underwater images is often severely degraded due to the complexities of the underwater environment and equipment limitations. This degradation hinders advancements in relevant research. Consequently, underwater image restoration has gained significant attention as a research area. With the growing interest in deep-sea exploration, deep-sea image restoration has emerged as a new focus, presenting unique challenges. This paper aims to conduct a systematic review of underwater image restoration technology, bridging the gap between shallow-sea and deep-sea image restoration fields through experimental analysis. This paper first categorizes shallow-sea image restoration methods into three types: physical model-based methods, prior-based methods, and deep learning-based methods that integrate physical models. The core concepts and characteristics of representative methods are analyzed. The research status and primary challenges in deep-sea image restoration are then summarized, including color cast and blur caused by underwater environmental characteristics, as well as insufficient and uneven lighting caused by artificial light sources. Potential solutions are explored, such as applying general shallow-sea restoration methods to address color cast and blur, and leveraging techniques from related fields like exposure image correction and low-light image enhancement to tackle lighting issues. Comprehensive experiments are conducted to examine the feasibility of shallow-sea image restoration methods and related image enhancement techniques for deep-sea image restoration. The experimental results provide valuable insights into existing methods for addressing the challenges of deep-sea image restoration. An in-depth discussion is presented, suggesting several future development directions in deep-sea image restoration. Three main points emerged from the research findings: i) Existing shallow-sea image restoration methods are insufficient to address the degradation issues in deep-sea environments, such as low-light and uneven illumination. ii) Combining imaging physical models with deep learning to restore deep-sea image quality may potentially yield desirable results. iii) The application potential of unsupervised and zero-shot learning methods in deep-sea image restoration warrants further investigation, given their ability to work with limited training data.

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) are emerging as the leading causes of liver disease worldwide. These conditions can lead to cirrhosis, liver cancer, liver failure, and other related ailments. At present, liver transplantation remains the sole treatment option for end-stage NASH, leading to a rapidly growing socioeconomic burden. Kupffer cells (KCs) are a dominant population of macrophages that reside in the liver, playing a crucial role in innate immunity. Their primary function includes phagocytosing exogenous substances, presenting antigens, and triggering immune responses. Moreover, they interact with other liver cells during the pathogenesis of NAFLD, and this crosstalk may either delay or exacerbate disease progression. Stimulation by endogenous signals triggers the activation of KCs, resulting in the expression of various inflammatory factors and chemokines, such as NLRP3, TNF-α, IL-1B, and IL-6, and contributing to the inflammatory cascade. In the past 5 years, significant advances have been made in understanding the biological properties and immune functions of KCs in NAFLD, including their interactions with tissue molecules, underlying molecular mechanisms, signaling pathways, and relevant therapeutic interventions. Having a comprehensive understanding of these mechanisms and characteristics can have enormous potential in guiding future strategies for the prevention and treatment of NAFLD.

Up to two-thirds of biliary atresia (BA) patients need liver transplantation after the standard Kasai portoenterostomy treatment. Unrelenting cholangitis often precedes the full-blown presentation of BA. Using ribosomal 18S sequencing, here we report bowel colonization by non-commensalAspergillusfungi in one case of neonatal obstructive cholangitis. Continuous oral fluconazole treatment resolved obstructive cholangitis completely. Colonization by non-commensalAspergillusandCerrenawere additionally identified in 2 BA cases. In brief, bowel colonization by non-commensal fungi could be a treatable cause of neonatal obstructive cholangitis and potentially BA at an early stage.

BackgroundMultiple clinical studies have indicated that the gut microbiota influences the effects of immune checkpoint blockade (ICB) therapy comprising PD-1/PD-L1 inhibitors, but the causal relationship is unclear. Because of numerous confounders, many microbes related to PD-1/PD-L1 have not been identified. This study aimed to determine the causal relationship between the microbiota and PD-1/PD-L1 and identify possible biomarkers for ICB therapy.MethodWe used bidirectional two-sample Mendelian randomization with two different thresholds to explore the potential causal relationship between the microbiota and PD-1/PD-L1 and species-level microbiota GWAS to verify the result.ResultIn the primary forward analysis, genus_Holdemanella showed a negative correlation with PD-1 [βIVW = -0.25; 95% CI (-0.43 to -0.07); PFDR = 0.028] and genus_Prevotella9 showed a positive correlation with PD-1 [βIVW = 0.2; 95% CI (0.1 to 0.4); PFDR = 0.027]; order_Rhodospirillales [βIVW = 0.2; 95% CI (0.1 to 0.4); PFDR = 0.044], family_Rhodospirillaceae [βIVW = 0.2; 95% CI (0 to 0.4); PFDR = 0.032], genus_Ruminococcaceae_UCG005 [βIVW = 0.29; 95% CI (0.08 to 0.5); PFDR = 0.028], genus_Ruminococcus_gnavus_group [βIVW = 0.22; 95% CI (0.05 to 0.4); PFDR = 0.029], and genus_Coprococcus_2 [βIVW = 0.4; 95% CI (0.1 to 0.6); PFDR = 0.018] were positively correlated with PD-L1; and phylum_Firmicutes [βIVW = -0.3; 95% CI (-0.4 to -0.1); PFDR = 0.031], family_ClostridialesvadinBB60group [βIVW = -0.31; 95% CI (-0.5 to -0.11), PFDR = 0.008], family_Ruminococcaceae [βIVW = -0.33; 95% CI (-0.58 to -0.07); PFDR = 0.049], and genus_Ruminococcaceae_UCG014 [βIVW = -0.35; 95% CI (-0.57 to -0.13); PFDR = 0.006] were negatively correlated with PD-L1. The one significant species in further analysis was species_Parabacteroides_unclassified [βIVW = 0.2; 95% CI (0-0.4); PFDR = 0.029]. Heterogeneity (P > 0.05) and pleiotropy (P > 0.05) analyses confirmed the robustness of the MR results.

Investigation of the South China Sea nudibranch Hexabranchus sanguineus from Sanya Bay afforded, in addition to three known compounds, nine new diterpenoids of the 5,19-cycloclerodane- (sanyanolides A-D), clerodane- (sanyanolide E) and subersin- (sanyanolides F-I) type. Remarkably, six diterpenoids aforementioned from H. sanguineus were also isolated from the sponge Chelonaplysilla sp. from the same water region, suggesting a trophic relationship between H. sanguineus and Chelonaplysilla sp. The structure and absolute configuration of new compounds were established by a combination of spectroscopic data, X-ray diffraction analysis and/or time-dependent density functional theory/electronic circular dichroism calculations. A plausible biogenetic relationship between these diterpenoids, along with the chemo-ecological implications of their co-occurrence in the two organisms investigated, was proposed and discussed. In in vitro bioassays, echinoclerodane A exhibited a potent inhibitory effect (IC50 = 2.81 μM) on LPS-induced inflammatory response in RAW 264.7 macrophage cells. In addition, echinoclerodane A and oculatolide showed considerable antibacterial activities with MIC values ranging from 1.0 to 8.0 μg/mL.

The tight oil reservoir rocks in the Jidong Oilfield are generally characterized by high hardness, strong abrasiveness, and extremely unevenness, which seriously reduce the drilling efficiency. In view of this problem, the mineral composition, hardness, plasticity coefficient, and drillability of rocks were first determined. It was found that the rock integrity, compactness and high hardness are the main factors leading to the low rock breaking efficiency of PDC bits. Then, combined with logging data, the drilling resistance profile of the whole well section was established. According to the crushing mechanism of rocks under the action of a PDC bit, the mechanical model of a single composite plate under rock crushing conditions is established, and the influence of the back angle on the cutting force is analyzed. The flow field distribution of the drill bit surface under different nozzle combinations was calculated by finite element numerical simulation. Based on the experimental and simulation results, the optimal backward angle was 15°, and the optimal nozzle combination was two 16-mm central nozzles and five 14-mm peripheral nozzles. Finally, a personalized PDC bit design scheme for tight oil reservoirs in the Jidong Oilfield was proposed. The scheme includes the following: (1) a 5-blade straight-arc crown is profiled; (2) anti-impact cylindrical components are set; (3) the nozzle hydraulic structure adopts a bending type; and (4) the diameter-retaining teeth and diversion grooves are optimized. The optimized bit reduces stick–slip, improves stability, and has an obvious acceleration effect.

Supported nickel catalysts are promising candidates for dry reforming of methane, but agglomeration of Ni0 and coke deposition hinder the industrial applications. Herein, we report a novel interface-directed synthetic approach to construct distinct metal ensembles by carefully tuning the compositions of the carriers. A Zr-Mn-Zn ternary oxide-supported Ni catalyst, together with the respective binary oxide-supported analogues, was synthesized by adopting a sequential co-precipitation and wetness impregnation method. Combined characterization techniques identify distinct catalyst models, including (i) conventional NiO nanoparticles with different sizes on Zr-Mn and Zr-Zn, and (ii) epitaxially growing NiO ensembles of a few nanometers thickness at the periphery of MnZnOx particles. These catalysts exhibit divergent responses in the catalytic testing, with the ternary oxide system significantly outperforming the binary analogues. The strong electronic interactions between Mn-Ni increase Ni dispersion and the activity while the stability is strengthened upon Zn addition. Both high activity, high selectivity, and remarkable stability are attained upon co-adding Mn and Zn. The interfaces between Ni and Zr-Mn-Zn rather than the physical contacts of individual oxide-supported analogues through mechanical mixing are keys for the outstanding performance.

On the other hand, we prove the existence results for different ranges of the coupling parameter β > 0 \beta \gt 0 with L 2 {L}^{2} -supercritical growth ( N = 5 N=5 ). Our argument is based on the rearrangement techniques and the minimax construction.

Ultrasensitive gas sensors have been successfully fabricated with the high-quality COFs@SnO2@CNS heterostructures and exhibit an excellent TEA sensing performance at room temperature.

Thin-wall heat pipe is an efficient heat transfer component, which has been widely used in the field of heat dissipation of high-power electronic equipment in recent years. In this study, the orange peel morphology defect of thin-wall heat pipes after bending deformation was analyzed both for the macro 3D profile and for the micro-formation mechanism. The results show that after high temperature sintering treatment, the matrix grains of heat pipe are coarsened seriously and formed a strong Goss texture, while a certain annealing twins with the unique Copper orientation are retained. The distribution of Schmid factor value subjected to the uniaxial stress indicate the inhomogeneity of intergranular deformation exist among the annealing twins and matrix grains. The annealing twin exhibit a “hard-oriented” component during the deformation; thus, it plays a role as barrier and hinder the slipping of dislocation. As the strain accumulates, part of the annealing twins may protrude from the surface of heat pipe, forming a large-scale fluctuation of the surface as the so called the “orange peel” morphology. The 3D profile shows the bulged twins mostly perpendicular to the drawing direction, with about 200-300μm in width and 10-20μm in height.

PurposeThe investigations could guide the structural design and fatigue life prediction of air-conditioning compressor valve plates.Design/methodology/approachThe High-Cycle Fatigue (HCF) and Very-High-Cycle Fatigue (VHCF) behaviors of stainless steel used for air-conditioning compressor valve plates were investigated. Monotonic and cyclic loading conditions were designed to explore the fatigue responses according to the load characteristics of the structure.FindingsThe crack initiation can be observed as the arc-shaped cracks at both sides of specimens and Y-shaped crack bifurcation in the specimens. Moreover, the middle section and the cracks at both ends are not connected to the surface of the specimen. The stress-life results of the materials under two directions (vertical and horizontal) were provided to examine the difference in fatigue strength.Originality/valueMonotonic and cyclic loading conditions were designed to explore the fatigue responses according to the load characteristics of the structure. Based on the experimental data, the results indicate that specimens under cyclic loading conditions could demonstrate better mechanical performance than static loadings.

Two-phase closed thermosyphon heat exchangers (TPCTs) have considerable potential for use in ground source heat pump systems. This paper proposes a new metal-polyethylene TPCT that uses water as the working fluid and is composed of a galvanized steel pipe and a polyethylene pipe. The heat transfer rate characteristics of the metal-polyethylene TPCT were studied using a constant-temperature water bath test bench. The experimental results show that the metal-polyethylene TPCT has the best heat transfer rate when the vacuum degree and filling ratio are 1.00 kPa and 12.5%, respectively. The average heat transfer rate increased as the temperature of the heat source and the flow rate of the cooling water increased. Finally, a sandbox test bench was built, which provided seepage and non-seepage experimental conditions for the metal-polyethylene TPCT. In the sandbox experiment, the heat transfer rate capacity of the metal-polyethylene TPCT was initially studied and compared with that of a single U-tube heat exchanger, and the heat transfer rates were similar. When the evaporation section length was 0.5 m, the heat transfer rates were 34.89 W/m and 111.75 W/m under non-seepage and seepage conditions, respectively. The experimental results show that the metal-polyethylene TPCT is feasible as a new type of ground heat exchanger.

The necrotrophic pathogen Sclerotinia sclerotiorum is one of the most damaging and economically important plant pathogens. Pydiflumetofen, which was developed by Syngenta Crop Protection, has already been registered in China for the management of Sclerotinia stem rot, which was caused by S. sclerotiorum in oilseed rape. In an attempt to preempt and forestall the development of resistance to this useful fungicide, the current study was initiated to investigate the potential mechanism of resistance in laboratory mutants. Five pydiflumetofen-resistant S. sclerotiorum mutants were successfully generated by repeated exposure to the fungicide under laboratory conditions. Although the mutants had greatly reduced sensitivity to pydiflumetofen, they were also found to have significantly (P < 0.05) reduced fitness, exhibiting reduced mycelial growth and sclerotia formation on potato dextrose agar medium. However, three of the four mutants had significantly (P < 0.05) increased pathogenicity on detached soybean leaves compared with their respective parental isolates, indicating a moderate to high level of fungicide resistance risk according to the criteria of the Fungicide Resistance Action Committee. Sequence analysis of four succinate dehydrogenase (Sdh) target genes identified several nucleotide changes in the sequences of the pydiflumetofen-resistant mutants, most of which were synonymous and caused no changes to the predicted amino acid sequences. However, all of the pydiflumetofen-resistant mutants had two amino acid point mutations (A11V and V162A) in their predicted SsSdhB sequence. No similar changes were found in the SsSdhA, SsSdhC, and SsSdhD genes of any of the mutants tested. In addition, there was a positive cross-resistance between pydiflumetofen and boscalid, and no cross-resistance between pydiflumetofen and other commonly used fungicides, including tebuconazole, fludioxonil, cyprodinil, dimethachlone, prochloraz, pyraclostrobin, fluazinam, procymidone, and carbendazim. These results indicate that pydiflumetofen has great potential as an alternative fungicide for the control of S. sclerotiorum, especially where resistance to other fungicides has already emerged. Mixing or alternate application with fludioxonil, prochloraz, and fluazinam could be used to limit the risk of resistance to pydiflumetofen.

Based on the theory of first-order reaction kinetics, a thermal reaction kinetic model in integral form has been derive. To make the model more applicable, the effects of time and the conversion degree on the reaction rate parameters were considered. Two types of undetermined functions were used to compensate for the intrinsic variation of the reaction rate, and two types of correction methods are provided. The model was explained and verified using published experimental data of different polymer thermal reaction systems, and its effectiveness and wide adaptability were confirmed. For the given kinetic model, only one parameter needs to be determined. The proposed empirical model is expected to be used in the numerical simulation of polymer thermal reaction process.

In this work, the light coupling efficiency of organic light-emitting diode (OLED) and polymer optical waveguide integrated device was improved by the grating coupler. To maximize light coupling efficiency, the grating coupler was optimized by finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method. Based on the simulation results, the grating coupler was fabricated via laser interference lithography process and an OLED was integrated on the surface of it. Comparing the integrated devices without and with grating coupler, light coupling efficiency of the grating-based integrated device was improved by about 5%. The proposed integrated device has the potential application for low-cost and flexible monolithic optical sensors.

Nanofiltration (NF) is an environmental-friendly and energetic-efficient technique for small molecule or ion separations compared to traditional energy-intensive separation processes. However, during the journey to discovering advanced NF membrane materials using a typical dead-end device, there is an obvious discrepancy on testing methodologies/protocols of NF membranes reported in contemporary literatures, which actually results in the significant data-reliability issues. This critical issue made the evaluation of various nanofiltration membranes so confusing and misleading because of the unfair comparison on NF performance. Therefore, it is urgent to guide the membrane society on the real factors affecting the data accuracy and standardize the protocol for nanofiltration test to develop advanced NF membrane materials. In this study, we have carried out a series of designed experiments to unify the standardized separation rate indicators of nanofiltration membranes by comparing flux, permeance, and permeability. The effects of external factors on separation efficiency (rejection) of NF membranes were investigated in detail, which is also analysed and discussed on the basic theory. The dead volume, rotor, and adsorption are proven to be the pivotal indicators for achieving accurate separation efficiency, which offers insight for reliable testing of nanofiltration membranes. Therefore, a protocol was proposed for evaluating accurate separation performance of nanofiltration membranes to obtain the reliable data, which benefits for fair performance comparison to advance NF membrane materials and makes the researchers to better understand the current confusing data reported in the literatures. The accurate testing protocols of NF membranes were clarified, which is important for the development of advanced nanofiltration materials.
