A murine model of central nervous system (CNS) decompression sickness demonstrates that high gas pressure activates astrocytes and microglia triggering inflammatory microparticle (MP) production. Thrombospondin-expressing MPs are released from the CNS via enhanced glymphatic flow to the systemic circulation where they activate neutrophils. Secondary production of neutrophil-derived MPs causes further cell activation and neutrophil adherence to the brain microvasculature establishing a feed-forward neuroinflammatory cycle.

At present, environmental issues are of concern to all countries, especially for developing countries, and education on waste sorting is urgent. However, it remains a challenge to improve students’ learning achievement and engagement in environmental education. Researchers have pointed out the potential of digital games for promoting students’ learning motivation. In addition, the two-tier testing mechanism has been recognized as an effective tool for correcting students’ misconceptions and promoting their in-depth thinking. Therefore, this study proposed a two-tier testing-based digital gaming approach. To verify the effectiveness of the approach, a digital game was developed and a quasi-experiment was conducted. The participants were two classes of fifth graders, with one class as the experimental group using the two-tier test-based digital game and the other class as the control group learning with the conventional digital game. The results showed that the digital game-based learning with two-tier testing model was conducive to students' improved academic performance compared with the conventional digital game-based learning model, especially for students in the low-level group, who were able to make greater progress. In addition, the approach was effective in terms of reducing students’ cognitive load and improving their flow experience.

Vulgarisins are members of diterpenoids with rare 5/6/4/5 ring skeleton from Prunella vulgaris Linn. (P. vulgaris). Their molecular scaffolds comprise different hydroxylation and degree of esterification. Vulgarisins have attracted many attentions in the fields of food and medicine for their potent bioactivities. Firstly, four reference compounds were analyzed by higher-energy collisional dissociation mass spectrometry (HCD MS/MS) and the fragmentation patterns for molecular scaffold were summarized. And then, a high-performance liquid chromatography/electrospray ionization/high-resolution mass spectrometry (HPLC-ESI-HR-MS) method was adopted to investigate the P. vulgaris extracts. Finally, the proposed analysis results were successfully applied to facilitate the discovery of the vulgarisins analogues from P. vulgaris. For the four reference compounds, the sodium adduct was the predominate ion in full scan. A specific fragmentation pathway of [M+Na]+ ions leads to produce diagnostic ions of vulgarisins at m/z 325 under HCD, which was formed through consecutive-side chains lost. Twenty-three diterpenoids, including 18 vulgarisins analogues, were identified or tentatively characterized in the botanical extracts of P. vulgaris based on their elemental constituents and characteristic fragment ion profiles. Two new vulgarisins analogues in the plant were isolated and their structures were illustrated based on extensive spectroscopic analysis using 1D and 2D nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. The HCD MS/MS method, including the profiles of the diagnostic ions induced by characteristic fragmentation, is an effective technique for the discovery of vulgarisins analogues in P. vulgaris. The expected fragmentation pattern knowledge will also facilitate the analysis of other natural products.

The purpose of this study is to investigate the predictive value of neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), serum calcium, and serum albumin on the prognosis of patients with diabetic foot. A total of 156 patients who were treated in the Department of Burn and Plastic Surgery of Qilu Hospital of Shandong University from 1 January 2014 to 1 August 2020 were selected. All the patients were randomly divided into a healing group, minor amputation group, major amputation group, and death group according to their treatment outcomes. The levels of NLR, serum calcium and serum albumin in each group were examined and compared. The correlations between NLR, serum calcium, and serum albumin with the prognosis of diabetic foot were analysed to investigate their predictive effects on the prognosis of diabetic foot. The results of one-way ANOVA showed that among the 4 groups of patients, the difference in NLR values between the healing group and the minor amputation group was slightly smaller, but they were significantly different from the major amputation group and the death group, respectively. There was no significant difference in serum calcium levels between the healing group and the minor amputation group, but the serum calcium levels of the major amputation group and the death group gradually decreased. The levels of NLR in the 4 groups gradually increased, while the albumin levels gradually decreased. Spearman's rank correlation test indicated that NLR was significantly related to the prognosis of patients with diabetic foot. The group with higher NLR had a worse prognosis in diabetic foot patients. Serum calcium and serum albumin were strongly correlated with the prognosis of patients with diabetic foot. The group with lower serum calcium and serum albumin values had a worse prognosis in diabetic foot patients. The areas under the receiver operator characteristic curve of NLR, serum calcium and serum albumin were 0.901, 0.803, and 0.816, respectively. NLR, serum calcium and serum albumin can be used as reliable indicators to predict the prognosis of diabetic foot. Preoperative diabetic foot patients with higher NLR values or lower serum calcium and serum albumin have a poorer prognosis.

Recent demonstrations of metalensing have realized the selective coupling from free-space light into surface plasmon focusing beams, providing great possibilities for on-chip integration of division multiplexing and light routing. However, the surface plasmon wavefront control strategies of these metalenses can only work for a limited number of polarizations and wavelengths, resulting in four or less multiplexing channels. In order to break through the limitations of current SP metalens designs, we propose a holographic method with which we demonstrate, both theoretically and experimentally, that several surface plasmon metalenses can couple and steer the incident circular polarizations of four wavelengths and two spin directions to high-quality surface plasmon focusing beams, yielding a novel eight-channel multiplexing. The focusing directions for different free-space incidences can be flexibly designated, either different or the same. The proposed design strategy is straightforward and versatile, which may open up new opportunities in the realms of integrated photonics, on-chip spectroscopy, or plasmonic demultiplexers.

Ductile fracture propagation control and arrest are important elements in fracture control of pipelines transporting natural gas and other high-vapour-pressure media (e.g., dense-phase carbon dioxide). The most familiar crack arrest methodology, the Battelle Two-Curve Method (BTCM), is based on Charpy absorbed energy, and is well known to under-predict requirements for current high-strength high-toughness steels. Adjustments have been made, either by using correction factors or using absorbed energy from the drop-weight tear test (DWTT), but these remain empirical. The crack-tip opening angle (CTOA) has been proposed for a number of years as a fundamental parameter to characterize propagation toughness in aerospace and pipeline applications. It is convenient for finite element (FE) modelling of fracture in full-scale structures such as pipe. However, early procedures to measure pipe CTOA by a “two-specimen” method have been shown to be unreliable. Moreover, previous CTOA models (PFRAC and PICPRO) produced very different results. Recent work has addressed both shortcomings, including validation of a practical test for determining CTOA of pipe steels (ASTM E3039) and development of reliable FE models for axial crack propagation in pipes. Fracture resistance curves (crack velocity as a function of pressure at constant CTOA) including the effect of backfill have been computed over a wide range of variables. For a given design (pipe geometry, gas pressure and backfill) only tensile properties and CTOA are required to determine conditions for arrest; there are no adjustable constants in the methodology. Results to date are in good agreement with full-scale burst tests (FSBTs) by researchers at TC Energy and at the University of Tokyo, and with Maxey’s original treatment of the effect of backfill on fracture velocity at high pressures.

In this paper, an engineering analysis approach is presented to predict fracture arrest CTOA requirements for gas pipelines using finite element (FE) analysis. A model with constant CTOA as fracture criterion was developed using the commercial FE code ABAQUS 2017x-explicit. Dynamic pipe fracture simulations were performed to determine fracture resistance curves (crack velocity as a function of pressure at constant CTOA) for an American Petroleum Institute (API) X80 steel pipe of diameter 914 mm to 1422 mm and thickness 13 mm to 26 mm. The model incorporated a user subroutine and shell elements. Backfill effects were modelled using smooth particle hydrodynamics and the flap pressure profile was modelled using experimental data from previous burst tests. Fracture resistance curves were compared with the gas decompression curve to determine the minimum arrest CTOA (point of tangency) for a given pipeline design (material, geometry, and gas). Results (arrest CTOA) of the given steel grade and design parameters (thickness, diameter, and backfill) are presented and compared with two previous arrest models that use the CTOA as fracture toughness parameter.

Paspalum distichum L. was tested to evaluate their phytoremediation capacity for Hg contaminated soil through analyzing the dissipation of Hg in soil through a greenhouse study by using self-made rhizos box. Original soil samples were collected at Hg mining site with serious Hg contamination and a control site, respectively. Planting of P. distichum. L last for 60 days. The results of chemical fractions analyses showed that elemental Hg and residual Hg were the two major speciations followed by organic bound Hg in the Hg contaminated soil, which indicated the high bioavailability and ecological potential risk of Hg in Hg contaminated soil.

With the popularisation of Android smartphones, the value of mobile application security research has increased. The emergence of adversarial technology makes it possible for malware to evade detection. Therefore, research is conducted on Android malicious applications of adversarial attack. To clarify the process and theory of adversarial sample generation, an adversarial sample generation algorithm is proposed that filters features based on feature spatial distribution and definition. These features are modified on real malicious samples to form adversarial samples. In addition, to enhance the robustness of adversarial sample classification detection, a multiple feature set detection algorithm is designed and implemented. Using the frequency differential enhancement feature selection algorithm to perform feature screening, the algorithm forms two different feature sets and establishes two different training sets to train different classification algorithms. Prediction results obtained by the two classification algorithms are integrated based on certain rules. Experimental results on the VirusShare dataset show that both algorithms are effective. The detection results in an actual environment also prove the effectiveness of the multiple feature set detection algorithm.

Light carries spin angular momentum, which, in the free space, is aligned to the direction of propagation and leads to intriguing spin Hall phenomena at an interface. Recently, it was shown that a transverse-spin (T-spin) state could exist for surface waves at an interface or for bulk waves inside a judiciously engineered metamaterial, with the spin oriented perpendicular to the propagation direction. Here, we demonstrate the spin Hall effect for transversely spinning light—a T-spin–induced beam shift at the interface of a metamaterial. It is found that the beam shift takes place in the plane of incidence, in contrast to the well-known Imbert-Fedorov shifts. The observed T-spin–induced beam shift is of geometrodynamical nature, which can be rendered positive or negative controlled by the orientation of T-spin of the photons. The unconventional spin Hall effect of light found here provides a previously unexplored mechanism for manipulating light-matter interactions at interfaces.

BACKGROUND Aortic dissection (AD) is a life-threatening condition with a high mortality rate without immediate medical attention. Early diagnosis and appropriate treatment are critical in treating patients with AD. In the emergency department, patients with AD commonly present with classic symptoms of unanticipated severe chest or back pain. However, it is worth noting that atypical symptoms of AD are easily misdiagnosed. CASE SUMMARY A 51-year-old woman was first diagnosed with scapulohumeral periarthritis due to left shoulder pain. After careful examination of her previous medical history and contrast-enhanced computed tomography angiography, the patient was diagnosed with a new type A AD after chronic type B dissection in the ascending aorta. The patient was successfully treated with surgical replacement of the dissected aortic arch and remains in good health. CONCLUSION New retrograde type A AD after chronic type B dissection is relatively rare. It is worth noting that a physician who has a patient with suspected AD should be vigilant. Both patient medical history and imaging tests are crucial for a more precise diagnosis.

In this study, the fungus Penicillium sp. was isolated from rotting postharvest blueberry fruits at different storage stages and identified into genera. Inoculation of this strain on the surface of fresh fruits was able to cause rotting. The strain was then used as a reference strain to test the chemical control effect of ozone fumigation during storage. The results showed that ozone fumigation had an obvious inhibitory effect on Penicillium sp. in a dose- and time-dependent manner. Meanwhile, ozone fumigation treatment could prevent the loss of fruit firmness, slow down the decrease of soluble solids, total phenolics, and anthocyanins, and maintain a lower activity of PPO and higher activities of POD and CAT. As far as we know, this is the first report on the effects of ozone fumigation on the postharvest pathogenic fungi Penicillium sp. and on the storage quality of postharvest blueberry collected from Majiang County, Guizhou province, China.

The present protocol describes a standardized paradigm for rodent brain tumor resection and tissue preservation. In clinical practice, maximal tumor resection is the standard-of-care treatment for most brain tumors. However, most currently available preclinical brain tumor models either do not include resection, or utilize surgical resection models that are time-consuming and lead to significant postoperative morbidity, mortality, or experimental variability. In addition, performing resection in rodents can be daunting for several reasons, including a lack of clinically comparable surgical tools or protocols and the absence of an established platform for standardized tissue collection. This protocol highlights the use of a multi-functional, non-ablative resection device and an integrated tissue preservation system adapted from the clinical version of the device. The device applied in the present study combines tunable suction and a cylindrical blade at the aperture to precisely probe, cut, and suction tissue. The minimally invasive resection device performs its functions via the same burr hole used for the initial tumor implantation. This approach minimizes alterations to regional anatomy during biopsy or resection surgeries and reduces the risk of significant blood loss. These factors significantly reduced the operative time (2 min/animal), improved postoperative animal survival, lower variability in experimental groups, and result in high viability of resected tissues and cells for future analyses. This process is facilitated by a blade speed of ~1,400 cycles/min, which allows the harvesting of tissues into a sterile closed system that can be filled with a physiologic solution of choice. Given the emerging importance of studying and accurately modeling the impact of surgery, preservation and rigorous comparative analysis of regionalized tumor resection specimens, and intra-cavity-delivered therapeutics, this unique protocol will expand opportunities to explore unanswered questions about perioperative management and therapeutic discovery for brain tumor patients.

Composting is an effective way to prevent and control the spread of pathogenic microorganisms which could put potential risk to humans and environment, from rural solid waste, especially sewage sludge and food waste. In the study, we aim to analyze the changes of pathogenic bacteria during the co-composting of rural sewage sludge and food waste. The results showed that only 27 pathogenic bacteria were detected after composting, compared to 50 pathogenic bacteria in the raw mixed pile. About 74% of pathogen concentrations dropped below 1000 copies/g after composting. Lactobacillus, Bacillus, Paenibacillus and Comamonas were the core pathogenic bacteria in the compost, of which concentrations were all significantly lower than that in the raw mixed pile at the end of composting. Test specimens used to calibrate damage-mechanics models are designed to produce a range of stress triaxialities and Lode angles to accurately capture the fracture envelope of the metal. Many of these specimens have lower constraint than deeply notched fracture specimens that undergo stable tearing and have high constraint at the crack tip. Often just one or two fracture geometries are used to calibrate the model. In this work, the ability of a damage model to capture variability associated with constraint at a crack tip, particularly for crack initiation, is assessed. A recent round-robin (Wilkowski et al., 2019, “1st Round-Robin for Exploring the Effects of Constraint on Fracture Initiation Toughness for Surface-Cracked Pipe/Fittings,” Panel Session held in Conjunction With ASME PVP2019, San Antonio, TX) study on the initiation toughness of X80 provided data for five fracture specimens in which crack tip constraint varied. As a damage model for X80 was not available, the well-calibrated modified Mohr–Coulomb (MMC) damage models from literature for X65 and X70 were used as a starting point for the model. Experimental data from the single compact tension C(T) specimen were used to slightly modify the X65 and X70 models to capture the X80 fracture response. The MMC damage model was applied in finite element analysis (FEA) to simulate both the crack initiation and propagation responses of single-edge-notched-tension (SENT) and surface-cracked pipe specimens. Except for a low J-integral at initiation predicted for the C(T) specimen, the remaining predicted responses for force, pressure, and initiation were in good agreement with the experimental data provided in the round-robin.

The radar constant calibration in incoherent scatter radar ion line processing is essential for the data quality and was not paid enough attention in previous studies. In this investigation, based on several experiments made by the newly built Sanya incoherent scatter radar (SYISR), we made and evaluated the ion line calibration by plasma line both in case study and statistically. The calibration factor had local time and altitude variations, due to the corresponding variations of the transmitted power, the radar gain, and the noise temperature. We obtained a mean calibration factor of 1.35 by the simultaneous measured plasma line and ion line electron density and applied it to a one-month ion line observation calibration. Through a co-located ionosonde measured foF2 evaluation, the calibration decreased the mean deviation from −1.92 MHz (−18%) to −0.33 MHz (−3%), which resulted in much better agreement between the ion line foF2 after calibration and the ionosonde results. The existed deviations between after calibration and ionosonde results were due to the uncertainties either in the used calibration factor or the ionosonde measurements. An empirical Te/Ti usage in raw electron density estimation and ignoring the seasonal and short-term variations of the effecting factors might influence the calibration performance. Using the to-be-completed SYISR Tristatic System, the performance of plasma line calibration technique is expected to be improved in the future.

Co-composting is an efficient strategy for collaborative disposal of multiple organic wastes in rural areas. In this study, we explored the co-composting of rural sewage sludge and other organic solid wastes (corn stalks and kitchen waste), with a focus on the variation of total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH) during this process. 12% corn-derived biochar was applied in the composting (BC), with no additives applied as the control treatment (CK). The TPH contents of piles after composting ranged from 0.70 to 0.74 mg/g, with overall removal efficiencies of 35.6% and 61.1% for CK and BC, respectively. The results indicate that the addition of 12% biochar increased the rate of TPH degradation and accelerated the degradation process. 16s rDNA high-throughput sequencing was applied to investigate the biodiversity and bacterial community succession during the composting process. Diverse bacterial communities with TPH degradation functions were observed in the composting process, including Acinetobacter, Flavobacterium, Paenibacillus, Pseudomonas, and Bacillus spp. These functional bacteria synergistically degraded TPH, with cooperative behavior dominating during composting. Biochar amendment enhanced the microbial activity and effectively promoted the biodegradation of TPH. The physicochemical properties of the compost piles, including environmental factors (pH and temperature), nutrients (nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium), and humic substances produced in composting (humic acids and fulvic acids), directly and indirectly affected the variation in TPH contents. In conclusion, this work illustrates the variation in TPH content and associated influencing factors during co-composting of rural organic solid wastes, providing valuable guidance toward the further optimization of rural organic waste management.

Waste management (WM) is a complex social–ecological system that should be evaluated by socioeconomic and environmental indicators. A new waste separation strategy was implemented in China in 2017. Whether the high recycling target in this strategy is conducive to the sustainability of the WM system remains uncertain, and the effects of public satisfaction on WM efficiency should be further assessed. This research used data envelopment analysis and a Malmquist index to incorporate both objective and subjective indicators. The results showed that half of the selected cities achieved managerial efficiency and that WM efficiency improved substantially after the implementation of the new strategy. Geodetector analysis found that satisfaction was driven by economic factors and environmental impacts. Sensitivity analysis confirmed that food recycling rate positively affected WM efficiency, but with diminishing marginal returns. The influence of environmental emissions and resident satisfaction on WM efficiency both increased with the recycling rate. When the recycling rate rose more than 33%, environmental satisfaction exerted a stronger influence on WM efficiency than environmental emissions. The results indicated that the combined application of objective and subjective indicators is necessary to accurately reflect changes in WM efficiency. Efforts to improve WM efficiency in China should focus on cities with low and declining efficiency, and increasing resident satisfaction and reducing CO 2 emissions will be primary paths to achieve efficiency improvements in future.

Harvesting light by metallic structures with sharp corners, or the so-called photonic singularities, has exhibit their potential in nanophotonics, sensing, and bio-medical applications. The high-quality light confinement of the light energy mainly relies on the precise preparation of nanoscale photonic singularities. However, the realization of massive photonic singularities still meets the challenges on integration and low-cost mask multiplexing. Here, we show an angle-dependent elevated nanosphere lithography to achieve massive photonic singularities for spatially modulated light harvesting at the near-infrared regime. The photonic geometrical singularity is constructed by the gold crescent array of plasmonic materials. The numerical simulation shows that the light can be localized at the spatially distributed singularities. This phenomenon is verified experimentally through the infrared spectral measurement. Our work provides the possibility to produce integrated light-harvesting devices for numerous optical applications in illumination, display, and enhanced nonlinear excitation.
