Magnetic reconnection in the relativistic regime has been proposed as an important process for the efficient production of nonthermal particles and high-energy emission. Using fully kinetic particle-in-cell simulations, we investigate how the guide-field strength and domain size affect the characteristic spectral features and acceleration processes. We study two stages of acceleration: energization up until the injection energy γ inj and further acceleration that generates a power-law spectrum. Stronger guide fields increase the power-law index and γ inj, which suppresses acceleration efficiency. These quantities seemingly converge with increasing domain size, suggesting that our findings can be extended to large-scale systems. We find that three distinct mechanisms contribute to acceleration during injection: particle streaming along the parallel electric field, Fermi reflection, and the pickup process. The Fermi and pickup processes, related to the electric field perpendicular to the magnetic field, govern the injection for weak guide fields and larger domains. Meanwhile, parallel electric fields are important for injection in the strong guide-field regime. In the post-injection stage, we find that perpendicular electric fields dominate particle acceleration in the weak guide-field regime, whereas parallel electric fields control acceleration for strong guide fields. These findings will help explain the nonthermal acceleration and emission in high-energy astrophysics, including black hole jets and pulsar wind nebulae. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

For nanosecond pulsed gas discharge under hundreds of kV/cm in sulfur hexafluoride (SF6), the electric field emission (EFE) effect may be the mechanism of the initial electrons. Electrode surface micro-protrusions (ESMPs) generated after discharging, would affect the discharge process under a high electric field. To investigate the effect of ESMPs on the breakdown time delay and jitter, the breakdown characteristics of different electrode materials and surface roughness are determined in this paper. Three types of electrode materials include stainless 304L, EDM-AF5 graphite, and CuW70 W-Cu alloy. The influences of stainless 304L electrodes with surface roughness coefficients of 1.6 and 0.8 on the breakdown delay and jitter are compared. After 700 discharge shots, the morphology characteristics and distributions of ESMPs are observed by a contourgraph. Based on the statistical results of ESMPs and EFE theory, the relationship between the electric field of EFE and ESMPs can be calculated. In addition, the effective electron rates of negative ion detachment (NID) are estimated. The experimental and calculation results indicate that the initial electrons are mainly produced by the EFE effect. When the pressure is below 0.5 MPa, the NID effect is limited and the breakdown time delay and jitter are dependent on the height to radius ratio and distributions of ESMPs. Once the pressure exceeds 0.5 MPa, the NID effect will be significant and the influence of ESMPs can be neglected. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The characteristics, breakdown probability, and statistical distribution of breakdown time delay under different du/dt in hundreds of nanoseconds pulse for millimeter gaps have been investigated by employing the statistical experimental method in this paper. The experimental results indicate that both the breakdown time delay and jitter are essentially decreased as the slope of the pulse voltage- du/dt is increased for 1-, 2-, and 4-mm gaps; in particular, increasing the value of du/dt is useful to obtain the smaller relative deviation of breakdown time delay under the same breakdown electric field. The breakdown probabilities for different gaps have been analyzed and a method of utilizing the Gaussian distribution function has been proposed which can be used for evaluating the statistical distribution of breakdown time delay. When the experimental condition is 100% breakdown probability, the breakdown time delay follows a Gaussian distribution. However, it is unsuitable for the fitting of breakdown time delay utilizing a Gaussian function for 2- and 4-mm gaps from the cumulative probability distributions of breakdown time delay because of the lower du/dt values and breakdown probabilities. Coaxial peaking capacitor is a key component in high-altitude electromagnetic pulse (EMP) simulators with fast front pulse output. It poses significant technical and engineering challenges in limiting radiation field amplitude and test space. This paper presents the design and testing of a 180 pF, 3 MV coaxial peaking capacitor with improved insulation performance. In the insulation design, the length of the dielectric film is extended to reduce the background electric field on the flashover path. The electric field threshold obtained from image diagnosis is used as a reference. During capacitor testing, the insulation characteristics are diagnosed using both direct and indirect methods. The voltage measured by a D-dot probe, the output waveform of the Marx generator in the primary source, and the radiation field waveform are analyzed to understand the flashover characteristics of the capacitor and to improve the reliability of the test results. The experimental results demonstrate that the peaking capacitor can operate stably at 3.0 MV. If flashover occurring on the dropping edge of the pulse is permitted, the operating voltage can be greater than 3.7 MV without significantly affecting the radiation field waveform. The analysis on the surface flashover morphology of the peaking capacitor reveals that the flashover mainly occurs at the dropping edge of the capacitor's waveform, indicating that the damage to the film is not serious. Magnetic reconnection in the relativistic and transrelativistic regimes is able to accelerate particles to hard power-law energy spectra f ∝ γ−p (approaching p = 1). The underlying acceleration mechanism that determines the spectral shape is currently a topic of intense investigation. By means of fully kinetic plasma simulations, we carry out a study of particle acceleration during magnetic reconnection in the transrelativistic regime of a proton–electron plasma. While earlier work in this parameter regime has focused on the effects of electric field parallel to the local magnetic field on the particle injection (from thermal energy to the lower-energy bound of the power-law spectrum), here we examine the roles of both parallel and perpendicular electric fields to gain a more complete understanding on the injection process and further development of a power-law spectrum. We show that the parallel electric field does contribute significantly to particle injection, and is more important in the initial phase of magnetic reconnection. However, as the simulation proceeds, the acceleration by the perpendicular electric field becomes more important for particle injection and completely dominates the acceleration responsible for the high-energy power-law spectrum. This holds robustly, in particular for longer reconnection times and larger systems, i.e., in simulations that are more indicative of the processes in astrophysical sources. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A polypropylene (PP) film is usually employed as the main insulation of the peaking capacitor, which is important in an electromagnetic pulse simulator to generate high-amplitude nanosecond pulse. The flashover voltage of PP films under nanosecond pulse limits the highest working voltage of a peaking capacitor. Surface fluorination was employed to increase the flashover voltage of PP. The flashover voltages of PP samples with different fluorination times (0, 4, and 6 h) were tested in an oven with nanosecond pulse voltage. The results showed that the flashover voltage of the PP film with 6-h surface fluorination was increased about 15% than the untreated film in the air. To clarify the influential mechanism, the physicochemical properties of PP film samples were tested and characterized. The results of thermally stimulated depolarization current (TSDC) showed that the trap density of the PP film increased obviously after fluorination treatment. With the increase in treatment time, the trap depth and density were increased obviously. The surface conductivity of PP films slightly decreased with the increase in fluorination time. The mechanism of surface fluorination on the influence of the flashover performance of the PP film under nanosecond pulse is discussed. It is concluded that surface fluorination significantly increases the carbon–fluorine (C–F) bond of the PP film, resulting in the increase in the depth and density of the surface trap, and then, a large amount of homocharges trapped in the surface trap reduces the electric field near the electrode. Megavolt-class pulsed gas switches play an important role in large pulsers as transfer switches. This article analyzes the breakdown process and characteristics of a megavolt self-triggered preionized switch under 100-ns pulses based on the optical diagnosis. It is discovered that the triggering spark illumination targeting the main cathode or anode can separately preionize the main gap. The discharge channel is likely to first form between trigger electrodes and the main anode. Based on the above deduction, the streamer velocity is calculated to be $0.54 \times 10^{6}$ – $2.34 \times 10^{6}$ m/s, proportional to the electric field. Also, parameters of the empirical formula for calculating the gas heating time are amended. Influence mechanisms of the switch jitter are also studied. Under pulsed preionization mode, the trigger gap breaks down when the main gap electric field is high enough, and the switch jitter is mainly determined by the self-triggering jitter. Nonetheless, the self-triggering jitter can be partly offset during the breakdown process if the changing rate of mean reduced electric field $d(E/p)$ / dt at the self-triggering time is higher than 1.0 $1.0\left(\mathrm{kV} \cdot \mathrm{ns}^{-1} \cdot \mathrm{cm}^{-1} \cdot \mathrm{MPa}^{-1}\right)$. Under sustaining preionization mode, the trigger gap breaks down prematurely, and the continuous arcing driven by switch leak current preionizes the main gap. As one of the key components of an electromagnetic pulse simulator, the peaking capacitor is coaxially constructed with a laminate structure utilizing alternative thin metal rings and polymer film dielectrics, which is designed as a part of the antenna. This paper presents a coaxial film capacitor with a novel structure to improve its flashover performance. First, the relationship between the capacitance and the capacitor's structural parameters are deduced, and a theoretical basis of lengthening the polymer film dielectrics to enhance the flashover performance is discussed. Based on the theoretical analysis, two 150 pF, 3-layer coaxial film capacitors with different extended lengths for the polymer film dielectrics (10 and 60 mm) are designed and developed. For the capacitor with a 60 mm extended film dielectric, the polymethylmethacrylate rings are adhered to the thin metal rings to support the polymer film dielectrics using a soft adhesive. Electric field analyses show that a longer extended length could decrease the surface field at the edge of the polymer film dielectric by as much as 93%. Comparative insulation experiments show that the flashover voltage for the improved capacitor is 89.9% higher than the original one. The influence of the capacitor's polymer extensions (including the polymer supporting rings and the film dielectrics) on the radiating field of a cone antenna is analyzed numerically, and the results show that only slight changes are introduced into the radiating field. Due to its low-loss and high dielectric strength, polypropylene is widely used as electrical insulation material in pulse capacitors. In order to study its breakdown characteristics for nanosecond voltage pulses, an experimental setup was designed to generate voltage pulses with a 10%–90% rise time of 38 ns and a full width at half maximum of about 90 ns. Tests of the three polypropylene films with thicknesses of 12, 15, and $18~\mu \text{m}$ were performed. In addition, hundreds of nanoseconds pulse and dc voltage were also applied for comparison. The experimental results reveal that most of the breakdown occurs during the front edge of the pulse for tens of nanoseconds pulse, and the breakdown strengths of the three kinds of polypropylene films are almost identical for different applied voltages, which show a weak correlation between the thickness of the dielectric and the breakdown field. The expected breakdown strength of tens of nanoseconds pulse defined in this paper is not significantly higher than the mean value of the hundreds of nanoseconds pulse and the dc condition, suggesting that the breakdown of a thin polypropylene film is mainly determined by the electrical field but not the voltage-time cumulative effect. All these observations strengthen the conclusion that the breakdown of a thin polypropylene film is an intrinsic phenomenon. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
