The pulp and paper industry is critical to global industrial and economic development. Recently, India's pulp and paper industries have been facing severe competitive challenges. The challenges have impaired the environmental performance and resulted in the closure of several operations. Assessment and prediction of the performance of the Indian pulp and paper industry using various parameters is a critical task for researchers. This study proposes a framework for performance assessment and prediction based on Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA), Artificial Neural Networks, and Deep Learning (DL) to assist industry administration and decision-making. We presented a case study based on eight industries to demonstrate the methodology's applicability. This study analyses and predicts industry performance based on sample data observations over 30 years. The result suggests the DEA-DL-based efficiency prediction has an overall MSE of 0.08 compared with the actual efficiency. Furthermore, the efficiency rankings are compared between the three techniques. The results suggest that the integrated DEA-DL method is primarily accurate in most scenarios with the actual values. Purpose: Paper-based artifacts hold significant cultural and social values. However, paper is intrinsically fragile to microorganisms, such as mold, due to its cellulose composition, which can serve as a microorganisms' nutrient source. Mold not only can damage papers' structural integrity and pose significant challenges to conservation works but also may subject individuals attending the contaminated artifacts to health risks. Current approaches for strain identification usually require extensive training, prolonged time for analysis, expensive operation costs, and higher risks of secondary damage due to sampling. Thus, in current conservation practices with mold-contaminated artifacts, little pre-screening or strain identification was performed before mold removal, and the cleaning techniques are usually broad-spectrum rather than strain-specific. With deep learning showing promising applications across various domains, this study investigated the feasibility of using a convolutional neural network (CNN) for fast in-situ recognition and classification of mold on paper. Methods: Molds were first non-invasively sampled from ancient Xuan Paper-based Chinese books from the Qing and Ming dynasties. Strains were identified using molecular biology methods and the four most prevalent strains were inoculated on Xuan paper to create mockups for image collection. Microscopic images of the molds as well as their stains situated on paper were collected using a compound microscope and commercial microscope lens for cell phone cameras, which were then used for training CNN models with a transfer learning scheme to perform the classification of mold. To enable involvement and contribution from the research community, a web interface that actuates the process while providing interactive features for users to learn about the information of the classified strain was constructed. Moreover, a feedback functionality in the web interface was embedded for catching potential classification errors, adding additional training images, or introducing new strains, all to refine the generalizability and robustness of the model. Results & Conclusion: In the study, we have constructed a suite of high-confidence classification CNN models for the diagnostic process for mold contamination in conservation. At the same time, a web interface was constructed that allows recurrently refining the model with human feedback through engaging the research community. Overall, the proposed framework opens new avenues for effective and timely identification of mold, thus enabling proactive and targeted mold remediation strategies in conservation. Background: In low-middle income countries, healthcare providers primarily use paper health records for capturing data. Paper health records are utilized predominately due to the prohibitive cost of acquisition and maintenance of automated data capture devices and electronic medical records. Data recorded on paper health records is not easily accessible in a digital format to healthcare providers. The lack of real time accessible digital data limits healthcare providers, researchers, and quality improvement champions to leverage data to improve patient outcomes. In this project, we demonstrate the novel use of computer vision software to digitize handwritten intraoperative data elements from smartphone photographs of paper anesthesia charts from the University Teaching Hospital of Kigali. We specifically report our approach to digitize checkbox data, symbol-denoted systolic and diastolic blood pressure, and physiological data. Methods: We implemented approaches for removing perspective distortions from smartphone photographs, removing shadows, and improving image readability through morphological operations. YOLOv8 models were used to deconstruct the anesthesia paper chart into specific data sections. Handwritten blood pressure symbols and physiological data were identified, and values were assigned using deep neural networks. Our work builds upon the contributions of previous research by improving upon their methods, updating the deep learning models to newer architectures, as well as consolidating them into a single piece of software. Results: The model for extracting the sections of the anesthesia paper chart achieved an average box precision of 0.99, an average box recall of 0.99, and an mAP0.5-95 of 0.97. Our software digitizes checkbox data with greater than 99% accuracy and digitizes blood pressure data with a mean average error of 1.0 and 1.36 mmHg for systolic and diastolic blood pressure respectively. Overall accuracy for physiological data which includes oxygen saturation, inspired oxygen concentration and end tidal carbon dioxide concentration was 85.2%. Conclusions: We demonstrate that under normal photography conditions we can digitize checkbox, blood pressure and physiological data to within human accuracy when provided legible handwriting. The research groups in computer vision, graphics, and machine learning have dedicated a substantial amount of attention to the areas of 3D object reconstruction, augmentation, and registration. Deep learning is the predominant method used in artificial intelligence for addressing computer vision challenges. However, deep learning on three-dimensional data presents distinct obstacles and is now in its nascent phase. There have been significant advancements in deep learning specifically for three-dimensional data, offering a range of ways to address these issues. This study offers a comprehensive examination of the latest advancements in deep learning methodologies. We examine many benchmark models for the tasks of 3D object registration, augmentation, and reconstruction. We thoroughly analyse their architectures, advantages, and constraints. In summary, this report provides a comprehensive overview of recent advancements in three-dimensional deep learning and highlights unresolved research areas that will need to be addressed in the future. Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a prevalent neurodegenerative disease with no effective treatment. Efficient and rapid detection plays a crucial role in mitigating and managing AD progression. Deep learning-assisted smartphone-based microfluidic paper analysis devices (μPADs) offer the advantages of low cost, good sensitivity, and rapid detection, providing a strategic pathway to address large-scale disease screening in resource-limited areas. However, existing smartphone-based detection platforms usually rely on large devices or cloud servers for data transfer and processing. Additionally, the implementation of automated colorimetric enzyme-linked immunoassay (c-ELISA) on μPADs can further facilitate the realization of smartphone μPADs platforms for efficient disease detection. This paper introduces a new deep learning-assisted offline smartphone platform for early AD screening, offering rapid disease detection in low-resource areas. The proposed platform features a simple mechanical rotating structure controlled by a smartphone, enabling fully automated c-ELISA on μPADs. Our platform successfully applied sandwich c-ELISA for detecting the β-amyloid peptide 1–42 (Aβ 1–42, a crucial AD biomarker) and demonstrated its efficacy in 38 artificial plasma samples (healthy: 19, unhealthy: 19, N = 6). Moreover, we employed the YOLOv5 deep learning model and achieved an impressive 97 % accuracy on a dataset of 1824 images, which is 10.16 % higher than the traditional method of curve-fitting results. The trained YOLOv5 model was seamlessly integrated into the smartphone using the NCNN (Tencent's Neural Network Inference Framework), enabling deep learning-assisted offline detection. A user-friendly smartphone application was developed to control the entire process, realizing a streamlined "samples in, answers out" approach. This deep learning-assisted, low-cost, user-friendly, highly stable, and rapid-response automated offline smartphone-based detection platform represents a good advancement in point-of-care testing (POCT). Moreover, our platform provides a feasible approach for efficient AD detection by examining the level of Aβ 1–42, particularly in areas with low resources and limited communication infrastructure. Significant Wave Height (SWH) is crucial in many aspect of ocean engineering. The accurate prediction of SWH has therefore been of immense practical value. Recently, Artificial Intelligence (AI) time series prediction methods have been widely used for single-point short-term SWH time-series forecasting, resulting in many AI-based models claiming to achieve good results. However, the extent to which these complex AI models can outperform traditional methods has largely been overlooked. This study compared five different models - AutoRegressive (AR), eXtreme Gradient Boosting (XGB), Artificial Neural Network (ANN), Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM), and WaveNet - for their performance on SWH time series prediction at 16 buoy locations. Surprisingly, the results suggest that the differences of performance among different models are negligible, indicating that all these AI models have only "learned" the linear auto-regression from the data. • Qualitative and quantitative detection of amine gases could be achieved by CSA. • A visible detection of beef freshness using the amine-responsive CSA was proposed. • ResNet34 had the best performance for beef freshness detection based on CSA. • T-SNE could further visualize and understand the classification process of DL. This study developed an innovative approach that combines a colourimetric sensor array (CSA) composed of twelve pH-response dyes with advanced algorithms, aiming to detect amine gases and assess the freshness of chilled beef. With the assistance of multivariate statistical analysis, the sensor array can effectively distinguish five amine gases and enable rapid quantification of trimethylamine vapour with a limit of detection (LOD) of 8.02 ppb and visually monitor the fresh levels of chilled beef. Moreover, the utilization of deep learning models (ResNet34, VGG16, and GoogleNet) for chilled beef freshness evaluation achieved an overall accuracy of 98.0 %. Furthermore, t -distributed stochastic neighbour embedding (t -SNE) visualized the feature extraction process and provided explanations to understand the classification process of deep learning. As more people express their thoughts on products on various online shopping platforms, the feelings expressed in these opinions are becoming a significant source of information for marketers and buyers. These opinions have a big impact on consumers' decision to buy the best quality product. When there are too many features or a small number of records to analyze, the decision-making process gets difficult. A recent stream of study has used the conventional quantitative star score ratings and textual content reviews in this context. In this research, a decision-making framework is proposed that relies on feature-based opinions to analyze the textual content of reviews and classify buyer's opinions, thereby assisting consumers in making long-term purchases. The framework is proposed in this paper for product purchase decision making based on feature-based opinions and deep learning. Framework consists of four components: i) Pre-processing, ii) Feature extraction, iii) Feature-based opinion classification, and iv) Decision-making. Web scraping is used to obtain the dataset of Smartphone reviews, which is subsequently clean and pre-processed using tokenization and POS tagging. From the tagged dataset, noun labeled words are retrieved, and then the probable product's features are extracted. These feature-based sentences or reviews are processed using a word embedding to generate review vectors that identify contextual information. These word vectors are used to construct hidden vectors at the word and sentence levels using a hierarchical attention method. With respect to each feature, reviews are divided into five classes: extremely positive, positive, extremely negative, negative, and neutral. An accurate estimation of three-dimensional (3D) temperature fields in channel flows is challenging but critical for many important applications such as heat exchangers, radiation energy collectors, and enhanced geothermal systems. In this paper, we demonstrate the possibility of inferring temperature fields from concentration fields for laminar convection flows in a 3D channel using a machine learning (ML) approach. The study involves generation of data using 3D numerical simulations, application of deep learning methodology using conditional generative adversarial networks (cGANs), and analysis of how dataset selection affects model performance. The model is also tested for applicability in different convection scenarios. Results show that cGANs can successfully infer temperature fields from concentration fields, and the reconstruction accuracy is sensitive to the training dataset selected. Several enhanced sampling techniques rely on the definition of collective variables to effectively explore free energy landscapes. The existing variables that describe the progression along a reactive pathway offer an elegant solution but face a number of limitations. In this paper, we address these challenges by introducing a new path-like collective variable called the "deep-locally non-linear-embedding," which is inspired by principles of the locally linear embedding technique and is trained on a reactive trajectory. The variable mimics the ideal reaction coordinate by automatically generating a non-linear combination of features through a differentiable generalized autoencoder that combines a neural network with a continuous k-nearest neighbor selection. Among the key advantages of this method is its capability to automatically choose the metric for searching neighbors and to learn the path from state A to state B without the need to handpick landmarks a priori. We demonstrate the effectiveness of DeepLNE by showing that the progression along the path variable closely approximates the ideal reaction coordinate in toy models, such as the Müller-Brown potential and alanine dipeptide. The current focus in Autonomous Experimentation (AE) is on developing robust workflows to conduct the AE effectively. This entails the need for well-defined approaches to guide the AE process, including strategies for hyperparameter tuning and high-level human interventions within the workflow loop. This paper presents a comprehensive analysis of the influence of initial experimental conditions and in-loop interventions on the learning dynamics of Deep Kernel Learning (DKL) within the realm of AE in scanning probe microscopy. We explore the concept of the "seed effect," where the initial experiment setup has a substantial impact on the subsequent learning trajectory. Additionally, we introduce an approach of the seed point interventions in AE allowing the operator to influence the exploration process. Using a dataset from Piezoresponse Force Microscopy on PbTiO3 thin films, we illustrate the impact of the "seed effect" and in-loop seed interventions on the effectiveness of DKL in predicting material properties. The study highlights the importance of initial choices and adaptive interventions in optimizing learning rates and enhancing the efficiency of automated material characterization. Acoustic holography (AH) provides a promising technique for arbitrary acoustic field reconstruction, supporting many applications like robotic micro-nano manipulation, neuromodulation, volumetric imaging, and virtual reality. In AH, three-dimensional (3D) acoustic fields quantified with complex-valued acoustic pressures are reconstructed by virtue of two-dimensional (2D) acoustic holograms. Phase-only hologram (POH) is recently regarded as an energy-efficient way for AH, which is typically implemented by a dynamically programmable phased array of transducers (PATs). As a result, spatiotemporal precise acoustic field reconstruction is enabled by precise, dynamic, and individual actuation of PAT. Thus, 2D POH is required per arbitrary acoustic fields, which can be viewed as a physical inverse problem. However, solving the aforementioned physical inverse problem in numerical manners poses challenges due to its non-linear, high-dimensional, and complex coupling natures. The existing iterative algorithms like the iterative angular spectrum approach (IASA) and iterative backpropagation (IB) still suffer from speed-accuracy trade-offs. Hence, this paper explores a novel physics-iterative-reinforced deep learning method, in which frequency-argument contrastive learning is proposed facilitated by the inherent physical nature of AH, and the energy conservation law is under consideration. The experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method for acoustic field reconstruction, highlighting its significant potential in the domain of acoustics, and pushing forward the combination of physics into deep learning. In this paper, the development of action and event detectors over the past three decades is summarized. The detectors are divided into 2D detectors, 3D detectors and deep learning detectors according to whether they contain spatial information and whether they use deep learning. This paper briefly introduces the typical detectors of the different types mentioned above, and explains the advantages, disadvantages and characteristics respectively, and compares them. Comparing traditional feature detection methods with ones based on deep learning, we found that the method of first detecting microscopic details such as point, line, surface angle, etc., and then performing action and event recognition is no longer the mainstream of current research. Due to the strong generalization ability, end-to-end action and event recognition methods based on deep learning perform better than traditional methods. As of now, more than 60 years have passed since the first determination of protein structures through crystallography, and a significant portion of protein structures can be predicted by computers. This is due to the groundbreaking enhancement in protein structure prediction achieved through neural network training utilizing extensive sequence and structure data. However, substantial challenges persist in structure prediction due to limited data availability, with antibody structure prediction standing as one such challenge. In this paper, we propose a novel neural network architecture that effectively enables structure prediction by reflecting the inherent combinatorial nature involved in protein structure formation. The core idea of this neural network architecture is not solely to track and generate a single structure but rather to form a community of multiple structures and pursue accurate structure prediction by exchanging information among community members. Applying this concept to antibody CDR H3 loop structure prediction resulted in improved structure sampling. Such an approach could be applied in the structural and functional studies of proteins, particularly in exploring various physiological processes mediated by loops. Moreover, it holds potential in addressing various other types of combinatorial structure prediction and design problems. Author summary: In this paper, we propose a new architecture that aims to improve upon protein structure prediction algorithms like AlphaFold or RoseTTAFold by considering the combinatorial nature of protein structure formation. Such an architecture, reflecting the physical principles of nature, is expected to yield beneficial results, particularly in scenarios with limited structure and sequence information. Named ComMat, this architecture does not focus on a single structure but rather on a set of multiple structures—a community—simultaneously. In this process, combinatorial exploration of protein structure is encouraged through information exchange among community members. ComMat is an instance that integrates this idea within the structure module of AlphaFold. Applying ComMat to antibody CDR H3 loop structure prediction yielded outstanding results in structure sampling and prediction when tested on the IgFold set and compared with IgFold and AlphaFold-Multimer. It confirmed that improved structure sampling stems from effective structural exploration. Natural disasters can be unpredictable and catastrophic. Even after the event, the repercussions are prolonged due to the incompetence of disaster management strategies. To mitigate the effects of a natural hazard, disaster management teams have to rapidly come forth with innovative plans of action. To contain the damage that a disaster causes, the response time, and preparedness of a disaster management team is crucial. Having a forewarning about the nature of the disaster can prove to be beneficial for the management team. Remote/unreachable areas such as deep parts of the forests, far-flung rural areas, oceans and other hard to reach locations are at a higher risk of receiving poorer aid and response due to the lack of communication and connectivity with the rest of the world. Our paper provides a solution for this particular problem by suggesting UAV/Drones for surveillance and monitoring in these inaccessible, disaster struck areas. The drones not only monitor the situation but constantly click pictures and send them to a base station, where the images are used to collect insights about the type of disaster that has to be dealt with. The paper proposes a deep learning model based on feature concatenation for classification of disasters which can be deployed at the base station, and can receive data in the form of images from a UAV/drone hovering over the affected place. The Coronavirus Disease 2019(COVID-19) has caused widespread and significant harm globally. In order to address the urgent demand for a rapid and reliable diagnostic approach to mitigate transmission, the application of deep learning stands as a viable solution. The impracticality of many existing models is attributed to excessively large parameters, significantly limiting their utility. Additionally, the classification accuracy of the model with few parameters falls short of desirable levels. Motivated by this observation, the present study employs the lightweight network MobileNetV3 as the underlying architecture. This paper incorporates the dense block to capture intricate spatial information in images, as well as the transition layer designed to reduce the size and channel number of the feature map. Furthermore, this paper employs label smoothing loss to address the inter-class similarity effects and uses class weighting to tackle the problem of data imbalance. Additionally, this study applies the pruning technique to eliminate unnecessary structures and further reduce the number of parameters. As a result, this improved model achieves an impressive 98.71% accuracy on an openly accessible database, while utilizing only 5.94 million parameters. Compared to the previous method, this maximum improvement reaches 5.41%. Moreover, this research successfully reduces the parameter count by up to 24 times, showcasing the efficacy of our approach. Retained surgical items (RSIs) pose significant risks to patients and healthcare professionals, prompting extensive efforts to reduce their incidence. RSIs are objects inadvertently left within patients' bodies after surgery, which can lead to severe consequences such as infections and death. The repercussions highlight the critical need to address this issue. Machine learning (ML) and deep learning (DL) have displayed considerable potential for enhancing the prevention of RSIs through heightened precision and decreased reliance on human involvement. ML techniques are finding an expanding number of applications in medicine, ranging from automated imaging analysis to diagnosis. DL has enabled substantial advances in the prediction capabilities of computers by combining the availability of massive volumes of data with extremely effective learning algorithms. This paper reviews and evaluates recently published articles on the application of ML and DL in RSIs prevention and diagnosis, stressing the need for a multi-layered approach that leverages each method's strengths to mitigate RSI risks. It highlights the key findings, advantages, and limitations of the different techniques used. Extensive datasets for training ML and DL models could enhance RSI detection systems. This paper also discusses the various datasets used by researchers for training the models. In addition, future directions for improving these technologies for RSI diagnosis and prevention are considered. Offshore wind-hydrogen systems operate in harsh marine environments for extended periods, posing risks of low accessibility and high failure rates. This paper proposes a data-driven fault detection framework for offshore wind-hydrogen systems, aiming to promptly detect potential faults based on the system's physical parameters. The research establishes a comprehensive model based on the operating principles of offshore wind-hydrogen systems. The study uses fault injection techniques to simulate common partial faults in offshore wind-hydrogen systems and collects relevant physical parameters (such as wind turbine power generation, energy storage battery charging/discharging current, and electrolyzer hydrogen production rate). A fault detection model was constructed using a combination of Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) and Bidirectional Long Short-Term Memory (BiLSTM) to enable precise detection of potential faults in the system. The established model provides theoretical support for designing, optimizing, and operating offshore wind-hydrogen systems, reducing reliance on actual experiments and lowering project risks and costs. Introducing artificial faults can evaluate the system's performance in different fault scenarios. This paper proposes a CNN-BiLSTM fault detection method that achieves automatic feature extraction and high-precision classification of time-series fault data, confirming the practicality and feasibility of offshore wind-hydrogen systems. This investigation realizes the integration of the offshore wind-hydrogen system model and deep learning, as well as a fully automated learning process from data to fault detection. Accurate segmentation of multiple organs in the head, neck, chest, and abdomen from medical images is an essential step in computer-aided diagnosis, surgical navigation, and radiation therapy. In the past few years, with a data-driven feature extraction approach and end-to-end training, automatic deep learning-based multi-organ segmentation methods have far outperformed traditional methods and become a new research topic. This review systematically summarizes the latest research in this field. We searched Google Scholar for papers published from January 1, 2016 to December 31, 2023, using keywords "multi-organ segmentation" and "deep learning", resulting in 327 papers. We followed the PRISMA guidelines for paper selection, and 195 studies were deemed to be within the scope of this review. We summarized the two main aspects involved in multi-organ segmentation: datasets and methods. Regarding datasets, we provided an overview of existing public datasets and conducted an in-depth analysis. Concerning methods, we categorized existing approaches into three major classes: fully supervised, weakly supervised and semi-supervised, based on whether they require complete label information. We summarized the achievements of these methods in terms of segmentation accuracy. In the discussion and conclusion section, we outlined and summarized the current trends in multi-organ segmentation. Background: MicroRNAs (miRNAs) emerge in various organisms, ranging from viruses to humans, and play crucial regulatory roles within cells, participating in a variety of biological processes. In numerous prediction methods for miRNA-disease associations, the issue of over-dependence on both similarity measurement data and the association matrix still hasn't been improved. In this paper, a miRNA-Disease association prediction model (called TP-MDA) based on tree path global feature extraction and fully connected artificial neural network (FANN) with multi-head self-attention mechanism is proposed. The TP-MDA model utilizes an association tree structure to represent the data relationships, multi-head self-attention mechanism for extracting feature vectors, and fully connected artificial neural network with 5-fold cross-validation for model training. Results: The experimental results indicate that the TP-MDA model outperforms the other comparative models, AUC is 0.9714. In the case studies of miRNAs associated with colorectal cancer and lung cancer, among the top 15 miRNAs predicted by the model, 12 in colorectal cancer and 15 in lung cancer were validated respectively, the accuracy is as high as 0.9227. Conclusions: The model proposed in this paper can accurately predict the miRNA-disease association, and can serve as a valuable reference for data mining and association prediction in the fields of life sciences, biology, and disease genetics, among others. This paper seeks to introduce a meaning-making process called 'sensuous abstraction' as one approach to aesthetic experience in line with Dewey's philosophy. Dewey highlights aesthetic experience as the best form of experience that integrates emotional and intellectual qualities to foster deep learning and insights. Building on contemporary research on sensation, affect, and human brain, this paper identifies two distinct modes of human understanding: the linguistic/conceptual system and the sensuous-imaginative system. The former, often associated with abstraction and intellectual thinking, is heavily emphasized in traditional schooling, but the latter, integral to human cognition, is sadly neglected and overlooked. While situational meaning offers a way to bridge the two systems, it often falls short of leading to aesthetic experience. In response, sensuous abstraction can promote a process of meaning making that becomes more general than sensation but never as general as linguistic categories while maintaining its sensory wholeness as aesthetic experience demands. Using a classical artwork as an example, this paper concludes sensuous abstraction can be adopted as one approach for educators to create learning experiences by integrating sensory experience and generalizations and abstractions that lead to aesthetic experience. However, the use of artificial intelligence in medical diagnostics comes with the critical need to explain the reasoning behind artificial intelligence‐based predictions and ensure transparency in decision‐making. Explainable artificial intelligence has emerged as a crucial research area to address the need for transparency and interpretability in medical diagnostics. Explainable artificial intelligence techniques aim to provide insights into the decision‐making process of artificial intelligence systems, enabling clinicians to understand the factors the algorithms consider in reaching their predictions. This paper presents a detailed review of saliency‐based (visual) methods, such as class activation methods, which have gained popularity in medical imaging as they provide visual explanations by highlighting the regions of an image most influential in the artificial intelligence's decision. We also present the literature on non‐visual methods, but the focus will be on visual methods. We also use the existing literature to experiment with infrared breast images for detecting breast cancer. Towards the end of this paper, we also propose an "attention guided Grad‐CAM" that enhances the visualizations for explainable artificial intelligence. The existing literature shows that explainable artificial intelligence techniques are not explored in the context of infrared medical images and opens up a wide range of opportunities for further research to make clinical thermography into assistive technology for the medical community. In a treatment or diagnosis related to oral health conditions such as oral cancer and oropharyngeal cancer, an investigation of tongue's movements is a major part. In an automatic measurement of such movement, it must first start with a task of tongue segmentation. This paper proposes a solution of tongue segmentation based on a decoder-encoder CNN-based structure i.e., U-Net. However, it could suffer from a problem of feature loss in deep layers. This paper proposes a Deep Upscale U-Net (DU-UNET). An additional up-sampling of the feature map from a contracting path is concatenated to an upper layer of an expansive path, based on an original U-Net structure. The segmentation model is constructed by training DU-UNET on the two publicly available datasets, and transferred to the self-collected dataset of tongue images with five tongue postures which were recorded at a far distance from a camera under a real-world scenario. The proposed DU-UNET outperforms the other existing methods in our literature reviews, with accuracy of 99.2%, mean IoU of 97.8%, Dice score of 96.8%, and Jaccard score of 96.8%. Named entity recognition (NER) aims to identify the required entities and their types from unstructured text, which can be utilized for the construction of knowledge graphs. Traditional methods heavily rely on manual feature engineering and face challenges in adapting to large datasets within complex linguistic contexts. In recent years, with the development of deep learning, a plethora of NER methods based on deep learning have emerged. This paper begins by providing a succinct introduction to the definition of the problem and the limitations of traditional methods. It enumerates commonly used NER datasets suitable for deep learning methods and categorizes them into three classes based on the complexity of named entities. Then, some typical deep learning-based NER methods are summarized in detail according to the development history of deep learning models. Subsequently, an in-depth analysis and comparison of methods achieving outstanding performance on representative and widely used datasets is conducted. Furthermore, the paper reproduces and analyzes the recognition results of some typical models on three different types of typical datasets. Background: Artificial intelligence (AI) can radically change almost every aspect of the human experience. In the medical field, there are numerous applications of AI and subsequently, in a relatively short time, significant progress has been made. Cardiology is not immune to this trend, this fact being supported by the exponential increase in the number of publications in which the algorithms play an important role in data analysis, pattern discovery, identification of anomalies, and therapeutic decision making. Furthermore, with technological development, there have appeared new models of machine learning (ML) and deep learning (DP) that are capable of exploring various applications of AI in cardiology, including areas such as prevention, cardiovascular imaging, electrophysiology, interventional cardiology, and many others. In this sense, the present article aims to provide a general vision of the current state of AI use in cardiology. Results: We identified and included a subset of 200 papers directly relevant to the current research covering a wide range of applications. Thus, this paper presents AI applications in cardiovascular imaging, arithmology, clinical or emergency cardiology, cardiovascular prevention, and interventional procedures in a summarized manner. Recent studies from the highly scientific literature demonstrate the feasibility and advantages of using AI in different branches of cardiology. Conclusions: The integration of AI in cardiology offers promising perspectives for increasing accuracy by decreasing the error rate and increasing efficiency in cardiovascular practice. From predicting the risk of sudden death or the ability to respond to cardiac resynchronization therapy to the diagnosis of pulmonary embolism or the early detection of valvular diseases, AI algorithms have shown their potential to mitigate human error and provide feasible solutions. At the same time, limits imposed by the small samples studied are highlighted alongside the challenges presented by ethical implementation; these relate to legal implications regarding responsibility and decision making processes, ensuring patient confidentiality and data security. The widespread adoption of Electronic Healthcare Records has resulted in an abundance of healthcare data. This data holds significant potential for improving healthcare services by providing valuable clinical insights and enhancing clinical decision-making. This paper presents a patient classification methodology that utilizes a multiclass and multilabel diagnostic approach to predict the patient's clinical class. The proposed model effectively handles comorbidities while maintaining a high level of accuracy. The implementation leverages the MIMIC III database as a data source to create a phenotyping dataset and train the models. Various machine learning models are employed in this study. Notably, the natural language processing-based One-Vs-Rest classifier achieves the best classification results, maintaining accuracy and F1 scores even with a large number of classes. The Jiyang depression in the southeastern part of the Bohai Bay Basin has a relatively large scale set of shale oil in the Paleogene Shahejie Formation, but the complex internal components lead to narrow frequency bands, low resolution and difficulty in reservoir information extraction. Impedance is important information for reservoir characterization, and how to predict high‐resolution impedance using available information is particularly important. Deep learning, known for its effectiveness in addressing non‐linear problems, has found extensive applications in various fields of oil and gas exploration. However, the challenges of overfitting and poor generalization persist due to the limited availability of training datasets. Besides, existing methods often use networks to solve a single problem in fact, deep learning can deal with a series of problems intelligently. In order to partially solve the above problems, an intelligent storage prediction network framework is proposed in this paper. Physical information is introduced to realize data‐driven and model‐based approaches, thus solving the problem of difficult construction of training datasets. The processing part accomplishes the high‐resolution processing of seismic records, thus solving the problems of narrow bandwidth and low resolution. Initial model constraints are introduced so as to obtain more stable inversion results. Finally, the well data is compared and analysed to identify and predict the lithology and complete the intelligent prediction of unconventional reservoirs. The results are compared with the traditional model‐driven inversion method, revealing that the approach presented in this paper exhibits higher resolution in predicting dolomite. Segmentation of whole slide histological images through the classification of tissue types of small fragments is an extremely relevant task in digital pathology, necessary for the development of methods for automatic analysis of whole slide histological images. The extremely large resolution of such images also makes the task of increasing image resolution relevant, which allows storing images at a reduced resolution and increasing it if necessary. Annotating whole slide images by histologists is complex and time-consuming, so it is important to make the most efficient use of the available data, both labeled and unlabeled. In this paper we propose a novel neural network method to simultaneously solve the problems of super-resolution of histological images from ×20 optical magnification to ×40 and classifying image fragments into tissue types at ×20 magnification. The use of a single encoder as well as the proposed neural network training scheme allows to achieve better results on both tasks compared to existing approaches. The PATH-DT-MSU WSS2v2 dataset presented for the first time in this paper was used for training and testing the method. On the test sample, an accuracy value of 0.971 and a balanced accuracy value of 0.916 were achieved in the classification task on 5 tissue types, for the super-resolution task, values of PSNR = 32.26 and SSIM = 0.89 were achieved. The inverse design of nanophotonic devices has been widely concerned by researchers, and on-demand design is the difficulty of inverse design. In inverse design, researchers usually define a target spectrum based on the performance indicators and experiences and then inverse design the structural parameters from the target spectrum. Due to the uncertainty of inverse design and "one-to-many" problem, it is not usually possible to guarantee that the target spectrum is sure to correspond to a real nanostructure. In order to solve these problems, an inverse design method combining generative model and genetic algorithm is proposed in this paper. Before the inverse design, the real spectrum is compressed into a latent space by the generation model, and then, the target spectrum is decoded from the latent space according to the performance index. Finally, the hybrid optimization algorithm combining genetic algorithm and forward prediction network is used to optimize the generated spectrum. The design method follows the process from performance indicators to target spectrum to structural parameter, and we successfully realized the inverse design of multilayer nanofilms on demand by using this method in the experimental part. Sign language is an essential means of communication for individuals with hearing disabilities. However, there is a significant shortage of sign language interpreters in some languages, especially in Saudi Arabia. This shortage results in a large proportion of the hearing-impaired population being deprived of services, especially in public places. This paper aims to address this gap in accessibility by leveraging technology to develop systems capable of recognizing Arabic Sign Language (ArSL) using deep learning techniques. In this paper, we propose a hybrid model to capture the spatio-temporal aspects of sign language (i.e., letters and words). The hybrid model consists of a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) classifier to extract spatial features from sign language data and a Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) classifier to extract spatial and temporal characteristics to handle sequential data (i.e., hand movements). To demonstrate the feasibility of our proposed hybrid model, we created a dataset of 20 different words, resulting in 4000 images for ArSL: 10 static gesture words and 500 videos for 10 dynamic gesture words. Our proposed hybrid model demonstrates promising performance, with the CNN and LSTM classifiers achieving accuracy rates of 94.40% and 82.70%, respectively. These results indicate that our approach can significantly enhance communication accessibility for the hearing-impaired community in Saudi Arabia. With the increasing complexity of the grid meter dial, precise feature extraction is becoming more and more difficult. Many automatic recognition solutions have been proposed for grid meter readings. However, traditional inspection methods cannot guarantee detection accuracy in complex environments. So, deep-learning methods are combined with grid meter recognition. Existing recognition systems that utilize segmentation models exhibit very high computation. It is challenging to ensure high real-time performance in edge computing devices. Therefore, an improved meter recognition model based on YOLOv7 is proposed in this paper. Partial convolution (PConv) is introduced into YOLOv7 to create a lighter network. Different PConv introduction locations on the base module have been used in order to find the optimal approach for reducing the parameters and floating point of operations (FLOPs). Meanwhile, the dynamic head (DyHead) module is utilized to enhance the attention mechanism for the YOLOv7 model. It can improve the detection accuracy of striped objects. As a result, this paper achieves mAP 50 v a l of 97.87% and mAP 50 : 90 v a l of 62.4% with only 5.37 M parameters. The improved model's inference speed can reach 108 frames per second (FPS). The purpose of this paper is to propose a novel transfer learning regularization method based on knowledge distillation. Recently, transfer learning methods have been used in various fields. However, problems such as knowledge loss still occur during the process of transfer learning to a new target dataset. To solve these problems, there are various regularization methods based on knowledge distillation techniques. In this paper, we propose a transfer learning regularization method based on feature map alignment used in the field of knowledge distillation. The proposed method is composed of two attention-based submodules: self-pixel attention (SPA) and global channel attention (GCA). The self-pixel attention submodule utilizes both the feature maps of the source and target models, so that it provides an opportunity to jointly consider the features of the target and the knowledge of the source. The global channel attention submodule determines the importance of channels through all layers, unlike the existing methods that calculate these only within a single layer. Accordingly, transfer learning regularization is performed by considering both the interior of each single layer and the depth of the entire layer. Consequently, the proposed method using both of these submodules showed overall improved classification accuracy than the existing methods in classification experiments on commonly used datasets. Emotion recognition has become increasingly important in the field of Deep Learning (DL) and computer vision due to its broad applicability by using human–computer interaction (HCI) in areas such as psychology, healthcare, and entertainment. In this paper, we conduct a systematic review of facial and pose emotion recognition using DL and computer vision, analyzing and evaluating 77 papers from different sources under Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. Our review covers several topics, including the scope and purpose of the studies, the methods employed, and the used datasets. The scope of this work is to conduct a systematic review of facial and pose emotion recognition using DL methods and computer vision. The studies were categorized based on a proposed taxonomy that describes the type of expressions used for emotion detection, the testing environment, the currently relevant DL methods, and the datasets used. The taxonomy of methods in our review includes Convolutional Neural Network (CNN), Faster Region-based Convolutional Neural Network (R-CNN), Vision Transformer (ViT), and "Other NNs", which are the most commonly used models in the analyzed studies, indicating their trendiness in the field. Hybrid and augmented models are not explicitly categorized within this taxonomy, but they are still important to the field. This review offers an understanding of state-of-the-art computer vision algorithms and datasets for emotion recognition through facial expressions and body poses, allowing researchers to understand its fundamental components and trends. This paper proposes a multimodal Transformer model that uses time-series data to detect and predict winter road surface conditions. For detecting or predicting road surface conditions, the previous approach focuses on the cooperative use of multiple modalities as inputs, e.g., images captured by fixed-point cameras (road surface images) and auxiliary data related to road surface conditions under simple modality integration. Although such an approach achieves performance improvement compared to the method using only images or auxiliary data, there is a demand for further consideration of the way to integrate heterogeneous modalities. The proposed method realizes a more effective modality integration using a cross-attention mechanism and time-series processing. Concretely, when integrating multiple modalities, feature compensation through mutual complementation between modalities is realized through a feature integration technique based on a cross-attention mechanism, and the representational ability of the integrated features is enhanced. In addition, by introducing time-series processing for the input data across several timesteps, it is possible to consider the temporal changes in the road surface conditions. Experiments are conducted for both detection and prediction tasks using data corresponding to the current winter condition and data corresponding to a few hours after the current winter condition, respectively. The experimental results verify the effectiveness of the proposed method for both tasks. In addition to the construction of the classification model for winter road surface conditions, we first attempt to visualize the classification results, especially the prediction results, through the image style transfer model as supplemental extended experiments on image generation at the end of the paper. Visual simultaneous localization and mapping (VSLAM) enhances the navigation of autonomous agents in unfamiliar environments by progressively constructing maps and estimating poses. However, conventional VSLAM pipelines often exhibited degraded performance in dynamic environments featuring mobile objects. Recent research in deep learning led to notable progress in semantic segmentation, which involves assigning semantic labels to image pixels. The integration of semantic segmentation into VSLAM can effectively differentiate between static and dynamic elements in intricate scenes. This paper provided a comprehensive comparative review on leveraging semantic segmentation to improve major components of VSLAM, including visual odometry, loop closure detection, and environmental mapping. Key principles and methods for both traditional VSLAM and deep semantic segmentation were introduced. This paper presented an overview and comparative analysis of the technical implementations of semantic integration across various modules of the VSLAM pipeline. Furthermore, it examined the features and potential use cases associated with the fusion of VSLAM and semantics. It was found that the existing VSLAM model continued to face challenges related to computational complexity. Promising future research directions were identified, including efficient model design, multimodal fusion, online adaptation, dynamic scene reconstruction, and end-to-end joint optimization. With the continuous development of automotive intelligence, vehicle occupant detection technology has received increasing attention. Despite various types of research in this field, a simple, reliable, and highly private detection method is lacking. This paper proposes a method for vehicle occupant detection using millimeter-wave radar. Specifically, the paper outlines the system design for vehicle occupant detection using millimeter-wave radar. By collecting the raw signals of FMCW radar and applying Range-FFT and DoA estimation algorithms, a range–azimuth heatmap was generated, visually depicting the current status of people inside the vehicle. Furthermore, utilizing the collected range–azimuth heatmap of passengers, this paper integrates the Faster R-CNN deep learning networks with radar signal processing to identify passenger information. Finally, to test the performance of the detection method proposed in this article, an experimental verification was conducted in a car and the results were compared with those of traditional machine learning algorithms. Skin cancer has a significant impact on the lives of many individuals annually and is recognized as the most prevalent type of cancer. In the United States, an estimated annual incidence of approximately 3.5 million people receiving a diagnosis of skin cancer underscores its widespread prevalence. Furthermore, the prognosis for individuals afflicted with advancing stages of skin cancer experiences a substantial decline in survival rates. This paper is dedicated to aiding healthcare experts in distinguishing between benign and malignant skin cancer cases by employing a range of machine learning and deep learning techniques and different feature extractors and feature selectors to enhance the evaluation metrics. In this paper, different transfer learning models are employed as feature extractors, and to enhance the evaluation metrics, a feature selection layer is designed, which includes diverse techniques such as Univariate, Mutual Information, ANOVA, PCA, XGB, Lasso, Random Forest, and Variance. Among transfer models, DenseNet-201 was selected as the primary feature extractor to identify features from data. Subsequently, the Lasso method was applied for feature selection, utilizing diverse machine learning approaches such as MLP, XGB, RF, and NB. To optimize accuracy and precision, ensemble methods were employed to identify and enhance the best-performing models. Confronted with the fast social development, the speed of garbage generation has increased. Therefore, from every aspect, especially staying green and healthy, it is urgent and vital to ensure accurate and stable garbage classification. In the field of garbage classification, household garbage has a large volume and the classification process still requires manual intervention. Besides, most of the current studies focus on industrial waste and medical waste, while the existing studies on household garbage are not effective enough. Furthermore, these studies are mostly trained and validated in self-built datasets, making the experimental results insufficiently representative and severely limiting the development of research. Aiming to facilitate the study of household garbage classification, this paper proposes a simple yet effective network model (FConvNet) to improve classification performance. In this paper, an effective convolution block with fused convolution is designed to enhance the potential correlation of the features in the spatial dimension, and then a lightweight symmetric structure is constructed to infer more information about the feature representation. The experiments on public datasets have justified the effectiveness of FConvNet with accuracy rates of 95%, 95% and 97%, achieving better performance on public datasets compared to baselines. Additionally, an online system based on the WeChat mini program framework is designed to provide convenient household garbage classification services and enable the collection of uploaded images to perform model optimizations. Listening to music is a crucial tool for relieving stress and promoting relaxation. However, the limited options available for stress-relief music do not cater to individual preferences, compromising its effectiveness. Traditional methods of curating stress-relief music rely heavily on measuring biological responses, which is time-consuming, expensive, and requires specialized measurement devices. In this paper, a deep learning approach to solve this problem is introduced that explicitly uses convolutional neural networks and provides a more efficient and economical method for generating large datasets of stress-relief music. These datasets are composed of Mel-scaled spectrograms that include essential sound elements (such as frequency, amplitude, and waveform) that can be directly extracted from the music. The trained model demonstrated a test accuracy of 98.7%, and a clinical study indicated that the model-selected music was as effective as researcher-verified music in terms of stress-relieving capacity. This paper underlines the transformative potential of deep learning in addressing the challenge of limited music options for stress relief. More importantly, the proposed method has profound implications for music therapy because it enables a more personalized approach to stress-relief music selection, offering the potential for enhanced emotional well-being. A cement‐based material that meets the general goals of mechanical properties, workability, and durability as well as the ever‐increasing demands of environmental sustainability is produced by varying the type and quantity of individual constituents in high‐performance concrete (HPC) and ultrahigh‐performance concrete (UHPC). Expensive and time‐consuming laboratory experiments can be used to estimate the properties of concrete mixtures and elements. As an alternative, these attributes can be approximated by means of predictive models created through the application of artificial intelligence (AI) methodologies. AI approaches are among the most effective ways to solve engineering problems due to their capacity for pattern recognition and knowledge processing. Machine learning (ML) and deep learning (DL) are a subfield of AI that is gaining popularity across many scientific domains as a result of its many benefits over statistical and experimental models. These include, but are not limited to, better accuracy, faster performance, greater responsiveness in complex environments, and lower economic costs. In order to assess the critical features of the literature, a comprehensive review of ML and DL applications for HPC and UHPC was conducted in this study. This paper offers a thorough explanation of the fundamental terms and ideas of ML and DL algorithms that are frequently used to predict mechanical properties of HPC and UHPC. With the increasing applications of traffic scene image classification in intelligent transportation systems, there is a growing demand for improved accuracy and robustness in this classification task. However, due to weather conditions, time, lighting variations, and annotation costs, traditional deep learning methods still have limitations in extracting complex traffic scene features and achieving higher recognition accuracy. The previous classification methods for traffic scene images had gaps in multi-scale feature extraction and the combination of frequency domain, spatial, and channel attention. To address these issues, this paper proposes a multi-scale and multi-attention model based on Res2Net. Our proposed framework introduces an Adaptive Feature Refinement Pyramid Module (AFRPM) to enhance multi-scale feature extraction, thus improving the accuracy of traffic scene image classification. Additionally, we integrate frequency domain and spatial-channel attention mechanisms to develop recognition capabilities for complex backgrounds, objects of different scales, and local details in traffic scene images. The paper conducts the task of classifying traffic scene images using the Traffic-Net dataset. The experimental results demonstrate that our model achieves an accuracy of 96.88% on this dataset, which is an improvement of approximately 2% compared to the baseline Res2Net network. Cloud removal algorithm is a crucial step of remote sensing image preprocessing. The current mainstream remote sensing image cloud removal algorithms are implemented based on deep learning, and most of them are supervised. A large number of data pairs are required for training to achieve cloud removal. However, real with/without cloud image pairs datasets are difficult to obtain in the real world, and the models obtained by training on synthetic datasets often need to generalize better to natural scenes. And the existing unsupervised thin cloud removal methods based on Cycle‐GAN framework with considerable model complexity and unstable training are not an excellent solution to the problem of lack of paired datasets. Based on this, in this paper, the authors propose an unsupervised remote sensing image thin cloud removal method based on contrastive learning—GAN‐UD. It is a network consisting of a frequency‐spatial attention generator and a discriminator. In addition, the authors introduce local contrastive loss and global content loss to constrain the content of the generated images to ensure that the generated cloud‐free images are consistent with the input cloud images in terms of image content. Experimental results show that the proposed method in this paper can still effectively remove thin clouds from remote sensing images without paired training datasets, outperforms current unsupervised cloud removal methods, and achieves comparable performance to supervised methods. Accurate and comprehensive detection of pavement cracks is important for maintaining road quality and ensuring traffic safety. However, the complexity of road surfaces and the diversity of cracks make it difficult for existing methods to accomplish this challenging task. This paper proposes a novel network named the global graph multiscale network (GGMNet) for automated pixel-level detection of pavement cracks. The GGMNet network has several innovations compared with the mainstream road crack detection network: (1) a global contextual Res-block (GC-Resblock) is proposed to guide the network to emphasize the identities of cracks while suppressing background noises; (2) a graph pyramid pooling module (GPPM) is designed to aggregate the multi-scale features and capture the long-range dependencies of cracks; (3) a multi-scale features fusion module (MFF) is established to efficiently represent and deeply fuse multi-scale features. We carried out extensive experiments on three pavement crack datasets. These were DeepCrack dataset, with complex background noises; the CrackTree260 dataset, with various crack structures; and the Aerial Track Detection dataset, with a drone's perspective. The experimental results demonstrate that GGMNet has excellent performance, high accuracy, and strong robustness. In conclusion, this paper provides support for accurate and timely road maintenance and has important reference values and enlightening implications for further linear feature extraction research.
