The paper describes quantitative and qualitative dimensions of nanomedicine research studies in India. The study is based on research publications data in nanomedicine research (1491 publications) as covered in Scopus data base for the period 2002-20. The study finds that nanomedicine research in India registered a high 73.7% growth with an average of 22.93 citations per paper. The nano-oncology subfield accounted for the highest share (48.49% share) in the national output, followed by seven other nanomedicine subfields. Jamia Hamdard University, Delhi, Panjab University, Chandigarh and Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi lead as the most productive organizations in the country. The paper also lists the most productive authors in nanomedicine research. The most productive research journals that reported nanomedicine research in India include Nanomedicine, International Journal of Nanomedicine and Current Pharmaceutical Design. Nanotechnology, contrary to its name, has massively revolutionized industries around the world. This paper predominantly deals with data regarding the applications of nanotechnology in the modernization of several industries. A comprehensive research strategy is adopted to incorporate the latest data driven from major science platforms. Resultantly, a broad-spectrum overview is presented which comprises the diverse applications of nanotechnology in modern industries. This study reveals that nanotechnology is not limited to research labs or small-scale manufacturing units of nanomedicine, but instead has taken a major share in different industries. Companies around the world are now trying to make their innovations more efficient in terms of structuring, working, and designing outlook and productivity by taking advantage of nanotechnology. From small-scale manufacturing and processing units such as those in agriculture, food, and medicine industries to larger-scale production units such as those operating in industries of automobiles, civil engineering, and environmental management, nanotechnology has manifested the modernization of almost every industrial domain on a global scale. Quorum sensing (QS) regulates the expression of several genes including motility, biofilm development, virulence expression, population density detection and plasmid conjugation. It is based on "autoinducers", small molecules that microorganisms produce and release in the extracellular milieu. The biochemistry of quorum sensing is widely discussed and numerous papers are available to scientists. The main purpose of this research is to understand how knowledge about this mechanism can be exploited for the benefit of humans and the environment. Simple Summary: In the past decades, the survival of ovarian malignant tumors has been largely unchanged. Treatment usually consists of a combination of systemic and surgical therapy. However, when recurrence occurs, treatment options are limited. When repeated surgery is no longer possible and chemotherapy is no longer effective, theranostics, a newly developing approach, might be of value. Theranostics will diagnose and destroy malignant tissue by binding radioactive isotopes to targets on malignant cells. To develop this approach, selection and validation of a target is necessary. For the selection of a target in ovarian tumors, the follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) receptor appears to be suitable because it is primarily expressed in ovarian tissue, and expression is reported in malignant tumors. This review seeks to determine whether the follicle-stimulating hormone receptor is expressed in ovarian tumor types and, therefore, is suitable as a target in a future theranostic approach. Ovarian cancer mortality rates have not decreased significantly in the past years. As most women are still diagnosed in an advanced stage, there is a need for new treatment strategies for recurrent disease. A potentially new developing targeted approach, theranostics, combines diagnostics and treatment using radiopharmaceuticals. Through target receptors, imaging and treatment of malignant tissue can be achieved. For ovarian malignancy, the follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) receptor may serve as a possible target since expression appears to be limited to ovarian cells. In this systematic review, we aim to gather all available literature on the expression of the FSH receptor in ovarian tumors. Pubmed, Embase and the Cochrane databases were searched until December 2023 for eligible studies. The search yielded 41 studies, mostly regarding serous carcinomas, sex cord–stromal tumors (SCSTs) and cell lines of serous and SCSTs. Various techniques were used to analyze the expression of the FSH receptor. For serous carcinomas, conflicting results on the expression of the FSH receptor were found. Studies on SCSTs, mainly studying the subtype of granulosa cell tumors, all showed positive expression of the FSH receptor. In the cell lines studies, the KGN cell line derived from a granulosa cell tumor shows positive expression in all studies. Available studies show that SCSTs express the FSH receptor. A theranostic approach targeting the FSH receptor may, therefore, provide a useful new approach for this malignancy with limited therapeutic options in recurrent disease. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background Participant selection for first-in-human (FIH) trials involves complex decisions. The trial design makes it unlikely that participants will receive clinically relevant therapeutic benefit, but they are likely to experience risks of various magnitudes and types. The aim of the present paper was to describe and discuss the views of investigators and ethics committee members about the choice of trial participants for FIH trials in cancer nanomedicine. Methods We drew insights from an exploratory qualitative study involving thematic analysis of 46 in-depth interviews with key stakeholders in Europe and North America involved in FIH nanomedicine trials. The present work draws on subset of 21 interviews with investigators and ethics committee members who have either conducted or reviewed a FIH cancer nanomedicine trial or are planning one. Results Investigators and ethics committee members are aware of the ethics standards for recruiting patients with end-stage cancer into FIH trials, but they nonetheless question the practice and provide reasons against it. Conclusions Although it is a standard and ethically accepted practice to enrol patients with end-stage cancer and no treatment options into FIH trials of investigational chemotherapeutic molecules, doing so can threaten the validity and generalizability of the trials, thereby weakening translational research. Another possibility is to stratify and include patients with less advanced disease who demonstrate certain biomarkers or cancer genotypes and who have a disease profile similar to that tested in preclinical studies. The latter approach could be a step toward personalized medical research and targeted drug development. Cancer despite the introduction of new targeted therapy remains for many patients a fatal disease. Nanotechnology in cancer medicine has emerged as a promising approach to defeat cancer. Targeted delivery of anti-cancer drugs by different nanosystems promises enhanced drug efficacy, selectivity, better safety profile and reduced systemic toxicity. The article presents an overview of recent developments in cancer nanomedicine. We focus on approved anti-cancer medical products and on the results of clinical studies, highlighting that liposomal and micellar cytostatics or albumin-based nanoparticles have less side effects and are more efficient than "free" drugs. In addition, we discuss results of in vitro and in vivo preclinical studies with lipid, inorganic and polymer nanosystems loaded by anticancer drugs which according to our meaning are important for development of new nanodrugs. Pharmacokinetic characteristics of nanodrugs are discussed and characterization of major nanotechnology systems used for cancer nanomedicine is presented.

Introduction: The Co-word analysis has the ability to identify the intellectual structure of knowledge ‎in a research domain and reveal its subsurface research aspects.‎ Objective: This study examines the intellectual structure of knowledge in the field of nanomedicine ‎during the period of 2009 to 2018 by using Co-word analysis.‎ Materials and Methods: This paper develops a scientometric approach about nanomedicine over a data ‎set of 2,798 documents published over a period of 10 years (2009–2018) on PubMed databases. The ‎data was analyzed using co-word, clustering methods and strategic diagram assisted by SPSS, Ucinet, ‎and VOS viewer software.‎ Result: The top journal that published papers on the field was Nanomedicine (London, England). The ‎results showed that the keyword "nanoparticles" and two pairs of frequently-used keywords namely ‎‏"‏Drug delivery systems ‎‏*‏‎ Nanoparticles‏"‏‎ were the most frequent in the field of nanomedicine. ‎Application of hierarchical clustering led to the formation of 9 clusters. The cluster "Drug Delivery ‎System (emphasis on cancer)" is the core cluster and plays an effective role. The other clusters like ‎‎"Nano diagnostic", "Drug design" and "Renovated Medicine" are in marginal.‎ Conclusion: This study represented that Co-Word analysis can well illustrate the intellectual structure ‎of an area. The frequency of keywords as well as formed clusters demonstrate that the majority of ‎research approaches include Pharmaceutical Nanotechnology. Despite the importance of other aspects ‎as well as Nanosafety/ nanotoxicology and new medical products and equipment such as nanorobots ‎have not been considered.‎ ‎

Microwaves are non-ionizing electromagnetic radiation with waves of electrical and magnetic energy transmitted at different frequencies. They are widely used in various industries, including the food industry, telecommunications, weather forecasting, and in the field of medicine. Microwave applications in medicine are relatively a new field of growing interest, with a significant trend in healthcare research and development. The first application of microwaves in medicine dates to the 1980s in the treatment of cancer via ablation therapy; since then, their applications have been expanded. Significant advances have been made in reconstructing microwave data for imaging and sensing applications in the field of healthcare. Artificial intelligence (AI)-enabled microwave systems can be developed to augment healthcare, including clinical decision making, guiding treatment, and increasing resource-efficient facilities. An overview of recent developments in several areas of microwave applications in medicine, namely microwave imaging, dielectric spectroscopy for tissue classification, molecular diagnostics, telemetry, biohazard waste management, diagnostic pathology, biomedical sensor design, drug delivery, ablation treatment, and radiometry, are summarized. In this contribution, we outline the current literature regarding microwave applications and trends across the medical industry and how it sets a platform for creating AI-based microwave solutions for future advancements from both clinical and technical aspects to enhance patient care. The human nature of curiosity, wonder, and ingenuity date back to the age of humankind. In parallel with our history of civilization, interest in scientific approaches to unravel mechanisms underlying natural phenomena has been developing. Recent years have witnessed unprecedented growth in research in the area of pharmaceuticals and medicine. The optimism that nanotechnology (NT) applied to medicine and drugs is taking serious steps to bring about significant advances in diagnosing, treating, and preventing disease—a shift from fantasy to reality. The growing interest in the future medical applications of NT leads to the emergence of a new field for nanomaterials (NMs) and biomedicine. In recent years, NMs have emerged as essential game players in modern medicine, with clinical applications ranging from contrast agents in imaging to carriers for drug and gene delivery into tumors. Indeed, there are instances where nanoparticles (NPs) enable analyses and therapies that cannot be performed otherwise. However, NPs also bring unique environmental and societal challenges, particularly concerning toxicity. Thus, clinical applications of NPs should be revisited, and a deep understanding of the effects of NPs from the pathophysiologic basis of a disease may bring more sophisticated diagnostic opportunities and yield more effective therapies and preventive features. Correspondingly, this review highlights the significant contributions of NPs to modern medicine and drug delivery systems. Carbon-based nanoparticles create a huge group with substantial applications in the diagnosis and therapy of diseases. Herein, the mechanism of their outstanding properties was discussed to form a new insight for handling their issues and developing new applications in medical field. In addition, the strategies to remove the possible toxicity effects were gathered and a complete literature review about their production by economical methods was done. Rose Bengal (RB) is a photosensitizer (PS) used in anti-cancer and anti-bacterial photodynamic therapy (PDT). The specific excitation of this PS allows the production of singlet oxygen and oxygen reactive species that kill bacteria and tumor cells. In this review, we summarize the history of the use of RB as a PS coupled by chemical or physical means to nanoparticles (NPs). The studies are divided into PDT and PDT excited by X-rays (X-PDT), and subdivided on the basis of NP type. On the basis of the papers examined, it can be noted that RB used as a PS shows remarkable cytotoxicity under the effect of light, and RB loaded onto NPs is an excellent candidate for nanomedical applications in PDT and X-PDT.

Organic and inorganic nanoparticles (NPs) have shown promising outcomes in transdermal drug delivery. NPs can not only enhance the skin penetration of small/biomacromolecule therapeutic agents but can also impart control over drug release or target impaired tissue. Thanks to their unique optical, photothermal, and superparamagnetic features, NPs have been also utilized for the treatment of skin disorders, imaging, and biosensing applications. Despite the widespread transdermal applications of NPs, their delivery across the stratum corneum, which is the main skin barrier, has remained challenging. Microneedle array (MN) technology has recently revealed promising outcomes in the delivery of various formulations, especially NPs to deliver both hydrophilic and hydrophobic therapeutic agents. The present work reviews the advancements in the application of MNs and NPs for an effective transdermal delivery of a wide range of therapeutics in cancer chemotherapy and immunotherapy, photothermal and photodynamic therapy, peptide/protein vaccination, and the gene therapy of various diseases. In addition, this paper provides an overall insight on MNs’ challenges and summarizes the recent achievements in clinical trials with future outlooks on the transdermal delivery of a wide range of nanomedicines.

Nanoparticles have been shown to be effective drug carriers in cancer therapy. Pancreatic cancer forms dense tumours which are often resistant to drug molecules. In order to overcome such multidrug resistance, new drug entities, novel delivery systems and combination therapy strategies are being explored. In this paper, we report the design and synthesis of a poly(allylamine)-based amphiphile modified with hydrophobic naphthalimido pendant groups. Bisnaphthalimide compounds have been shown to possess anticancer activity. The potential of this polymer to encapsulate, solubilize and enhance drug (5-fluorouricil and bis-(naphthalimidopropyl)-diaminooctane) cytotoxicity in BxPC-3 cells was evaluated. Our studies showed that the insoluble drugs could be formulated up to 4.3 mg mL−1 and 2.4 mg mL−1 inside the amphiphiles, respectively. Additionally, the novel poly(allylamine)-naphthalimide carrier resulted in an amplification of cytotoxic effect with drug treatment after 24 h, and was capable of reduction of 50% cell population at concentrations as low as 3 μg mL−1.

OBJECTIVES: The emergence of multi-drug resistance among various microbial pathogens has been a cause of serious concern to the medical world, limiting the choice of antibiotics. Considering that it may take decades to synthesize new antimicrobial drugs that combat resistant pathogens, the search for alternatives to conventional antimicrobial agents has begun. METHODS: In his paper we attempted to review the physico-chemical properties of nanoparticles, their modes of action and potential use in medicine and research with special reference to antimicrobial properties. RESULTS: Nanomolecules and nanoparticles have in recent years been extensively studied for their utility not only as antibiotics but also as vehicles to carry antibiotics or other agents such as cancer chemotherapeutics to target sites and limit damage to host cells. CONCLUSION: Nanomolecules were positively evaluated for their antimicrobial activities. Anti-biofilm activities of nanoparticles, utility of nanomaterials as carrier agents of drugs signifies their importance in medicine and research.

Triggering receptors expressed on myeloid cell-1 (TREM-1) is a superimmunoglobulin receptor expressed on myeloid cells. Synergy between TREM-1 and Toll-like receptor amplifies the inflammatory response; however, the mechanisms by which TREM-1 accentuates inflammation are not fully understood. In this study, we investigated the role of TREM-1 in a model of LPS-induced lung injury and neutrophilic inflammation. We show that TREM-1 is induced in lungs of mice with LPS-induced acute neutrophilic inflammation. TREM-1 knockout mice showed an improved survival after lethal doses of LPS with an attenuated inflammatory response in the lungs. Deletion of TREM-1 gene resulted in significantly reduced neutrophils and proinflammatory cytokines and chemokines, particularly IL-1β, TNF-α, and IL-6. Physiologically deletion of TREM-1 conferred an immunometabolic advantage with low oxygen consumption rate (OCR) sparing the respiratory capacity of macrophages challenged with LPS. Furthermore, we show that TREM-1 deletion results in significant attenuation of expression of miR-155 in macrophages and lungs of mice treated with LPS. Experiments with antagomir-155 confirmed that TREM- 1-mediated changes were indeed dependent on miR-155 and are mediated by downregulation of suppressor of cytokine signaling-1 (SOCS-1) a key miR-155 target. These data for the first time show that TREM-1 accentuates inflammatory response by inducing the expression of miR-155 in macrophages and suggest a novel mechanism by which TREM-1 signaling contributes to lung injury. Inhibition of TREM-1 using a nanomicellar approach resulted in ablation of neutrophilic inflammation suggesting that TREM-1 inhibition is a potential therapeutic target for neutrophilic lung inflammation and acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). A new application of mass-spectrometric methods to the identification, characterization, and analysis of nanomaterials developed or used in medicine for diagnostics, treatment, and (or) target-oriented drug delivery is considered. The main advantage of mass spectrometry (MS) in this exponentially developed area is the possibility of obtaining specific elemental and molecular information on the composition, structure, chemical state, and concentration of nanoparticles based on metals and their compounds. In combination with different separation techniques, MS can be used for the monitoring of formation and identification of particle conjugates with both target and transport biomolecules.
