In this study, three sequencing batch biofilter granular reactors (SBBGRs) were employed to treat model lignin wastewater containing different lignin models (2,6-dimethoxyphenol, 4-methoxyphenol, and vanillin). After 40 days of cultivation, uniform-shaped aerobic granular sludge (AGS) was successfully developed through nutrient supplementation with synthetic wastewater. During the acclimation stage, the chemical oxygen demand (COD) reduction efficiencies of the three reactors showed a trend of initial decreasing (5-20%) and then recovering to a high reduction efficiency (exceeding 90%) in a short period of time. During the stable operation stage, all three reactors achieved COD reduction efficiencies exceeding 90%. These findings indicated the cultivated AGS's robust resistance to changes in lignin models in water. UV-Vis spectra analysis confirmed the effective degradation of the three lignin models. Microbiological analysis showed that Proteobacteria and Bacteroidetes were always the dominant phyla. At the genus level, while Acinetobacter (15.46%) dominated in the inoculation sludge, Kapabacteriales (7.93%), SBR1031 (11.77%), and Chlorobium (25.37%) were dominant in the three reactors (for 2,6-dimethoxyphenol, 4-methoxyphenol, and vanillin) after degradation, respectively. Conductive materials have been demonstrated to enhance sludge methanogenesis, but few researches have concentrated on the interaction among conductive materials, microorganisms and their immediate living environment. In this study, Fenton iron mud with a high abundance of Fe(III) was recycled and applied in anaerobic reactors to promote anaerobic digestion (AD) process. The results show that the primary content of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) such as polysaccharides and proteins increased significantly, possibly promoting microbial aggregation. Furthermore, with the increment of redox mediators including humic substances in EPS and Fe(III) introduced by Fenton iron mud, the direct interspecies electron transfer (DIET) between methanogens and interacting bacteria could be accelerated, which enhanced the rate of methanogenesis in anaerobic digestion (35.21 ± 4.53% increase compared to the control). The further analysis of the anaerobic microbial community confirmed the fact that Fenton iron mud enriched functional microorganisms, such as the abundance of CO 2 -reducing (e.g. Chloroflexi) and Fe(III)-reducing bacteria (e.g., Tepidimicrobium), thereby expediting the electron transfer reaction in the AD process via microbial DIET and dissimilatory iron reduction (DIR). Sequencing batch biofilter granular reactor (SBBGR) is a promising wastewater treatment technology owing to its low sludge yield and good toxicity tolerance. However, little attention has been paid to the formation process and mechanism of aerobic granular sludge in SBBGR. This study systematically investigated the formation process and mechanism of aerobic granular sludge in an SBBGR to provide a theoretical basis for optimizing the culture of aerobic granular sludge. Aerobic granular sludge with good performance was successfully cultivated after 40 days of incubation using synthetic wastewater as feed: the mixed liquid suspended solids and mixed liquor volatile suspended solids increased from 3.85 and 1.85 g/L to 31.38 and 24.74 g/L respectively, and the COD, TN, and TP removal efficiencies were 91.21%, 84.99%, and 58.14%, respectively. The experimental results showed that Amoebacteria and Bacteroides played an important role in the formation of aerobic granular sludge, filamentous bacteria acted as a three-dimensional skeleton surrounded by filling bacilli and rod-shaped bacteria, and proteins played a dominant role in promoting granulation during the culture process., (© 2023. To reveal the mechanism underlying deep dewatering of municipal sludge, this paper investigated the sludge characteristics from the perspective of soil mechanics, and analyzed the sludge physical and mechanical properties, stress as well as dewatering behavior during the dewatering process. Before and after cationic polyacrylamide (CPAM) and chitosan (HACC) conditioning, the pressure filtration dewatering time of treated sludge was shorter than that of raw sludge, and the water removal rate was greater than 70% at the 6 MPa pressure. However, with the increase in filter pressing time, the filtration resistance coefficient of sludge increased, and the water pressure in sludge pores rose up, and a longer time was needed for dissipation at the larger pressure, resulting in the slowdown of sludge consolidation. In addition, based on the three-stage Terzaghi Voigt model, when the pressure rose from 2 to 6 MPa, the time from filtration stage to compression stage of raw sludge was shortened, and the second stage played the most important role in the dewatering process. Compared with the raw sludge, the sludge filtration stage was shortened after CPAM or HACC conditioning, and the main dewatering mechanism changed from the second compression stage to the first compression stage, which means the bound water in sludge flocs was transformed into free water. The excess sludge from municipal sewage treatment plants is rich in Fe (III) due to chemical dephosphorization. The activation of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) by biochar derived from anaerobic and aerobic iron-containing excess sludge was studied systematically in this research. Fe (III)-containing excess sludge was cultured in an anaerobic environment for conversion of partial Fe (III) to Fe (II), which was further carbonized to prepare biochar labeled AnSx@Fe. Meanwhile, aerobic sludge with different Fe (III) content was directly carbonized to produce biochar labeled AeS@Fe. For biochar (AnS20@Fe-15%) prepared from 15% Fe(III)-containing anaerobic cultured 20 days sludge, the relative contents of Fe (III) and Fe (II) were 21.26% and 78.74%, which were 31.03% and 68.97% for biochar (AeS@Fe-10%) prepared from 10% Fe (III)-containing aerobic sludge. Fe (III) can be reduced to Fe (II) by both anaerobic culture and carbonization. Their removal rates of tetracycline (TC) through 60 min PMS activation were 97% and 98%, with TOC (Total organic carbon) removal of 61.8% and 53.4% respectively. The reactive species including sulfate radical [Formula: see text], hydroxyl radical (·OH) and singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) were produced during PMS activation. After O 2 -aeration treatment of both AeS@Fe and AnSx@Fe, the relative content of Fe (II) was decreased and group C = O was disappeared, which resulted in reduction of [Formula: see text], ·OH and 1 O 2 . The generation of [Formula: see text] and ·OH was dominated by the Fe (II) activation and the 1 O 2 generation was originated from graphite type N and C = O. As a typical advanced oxidation process, Fe 2+ -persulfate (PDS) oxidation technology has been widely and efficiently reported for enhancing sludge dewaterability. However, higher dosage of Fe 2+ must be added, which will restrain the oxidation efficiency of Fe 2+ -PDS process. In this work, the oxalic acid (OA)/Fe 2+ -PDS process was studied to improve paper sludge dewatering. With the OA dosage of 6 μmol (g total solid (TS)) -1 , Fe 2+ dosage of 0.3 mmol (g TS) -1 , and PDS dosage of 0.6 mmol (g TS) -1 , sludge dewaterability was improved more efficiently. The specific resistance to filtration and water content of sludge cake were decreased by 70.7% and 8.0%, respectively. In comparison with Fe 2+ -PDS process, the viscosities of sludge suspension and supernatant were further reduced by 3.73% and 51.77%, respectively, and the contents of extracellular polymeric substances fractions were increased. The improved sludge dewaterability in OA/Fe 2+ -PDS process was mainly contributed by the synergistic effect of oxidative disintegration by free radicals and flocs re-flocculation, the contributions of which were the orders: metal cations > sulfate radical > hydroxyl radical. OA enhanced the efficient disintegration of sludge flocs, released more bound water, generated more Fe 3+ -oxalate complexes, and finally increased the sludge particle size significantly, forming a larger aggregation and obvious cracks. Additionally, the stabilization of several heavy metals was improved due to the chelating capacity of OA. The synergistic effect of heteroatoms is a viable method to enhance the adsorption performance of heavy metal onto carbon-based materials. However, the high cost, complex operation and a lot of pollution from the synthesis process have limited its development. Herein, a facile two-step pyrolysis method is used to prepare in situ N and S doped porous biochar from paper mill sludge for the removal of Cr(VI) from aqueous environment. The NSC-450 sample prepared under the optimum conditions has a large specific surface area of 3336.7 m 2 g -1 , an average pore size of 2.56 nm and a total pore volume of 2.10 cm 3 g -1 , manifesting the excellent adsorption capacity of 356.25 mg g -1 for Cr(VI). The adsorption of Cr(VI) by NSC-450 is consistent with the Langmuir isotherm and pseudo-second-order model, suggesting a spontaneous and endothermic chemisorption process. The analysis results show that the NH, graphitic nitrogen and thiophene structures have a positive effect on converting a large amount of Cr(VI) to Cr(III) by synergistic reduction, indicating obviously facilitating Cr(VI) removal compared to other sites. Therefore, in this material, the strong adsorption mechanism is mainly reductive complexation. Moreover, the effects of real water quality, anions, cations and fulvic acid on the adsorption behavior of Cr(VI) onto the NSC-450 were further investigated. The results demonstrate that the chromium removal rate remains above 82% even in actual electroplating wastewater, suggesting NSC-450 has great practical application prospect. The water in sludge is trapped within the extracellular polymeric substance (EPS) with gelatinous structure, greatly challenging the sludge deep dewatering. In this paper, the effect of the EPS viscoelasticity and the structural characteristics of sludge flocs on water distribution was revealed to provide a highly efficient approach in research on sludge dewatering. After biological, and physical method conditioning, the change of viscoelasticity and sludge network structure before/after EPS extraction was comprehensively explored, together with the sludge dewaterability and water distribution. The results suggested the proportion of capillary water and adsorption water carried in soluble EPS (S-EPS) was 59.17% and 40.83%, and that in tightly bound EPS (TB-EPS) was 54.77% and 45.23%, respectively. By contrast, the capillary water in loosely bound EPS (LB-EPS) accounted for as high as 99.99%. In comparison with raw sludge, adsorption water proportion in TB-EPS and S-EPS was reduced after lysozyme (LZM) or freezing-thaw conditioning, which was ascribed to reduction of EPS viscosity and the weakness of water adsorption capacity. Additionally, the sludge yield stress (τ y ) value first reduced and then increased with the extraction of EPS. Meanwhile, the consistency coefficient (k) also decreased from 4.23 Pa·s n to 0.006 Pa·s n and then slightly increased after LZM conditioning. This observation indicated the sludge system became sensitive to shearing, and its network structural strength as well as colloid elasticity first weakened and then slightly strengthened. In addition, after LZM or freezing-thaw conditioning, the sludge particle size significantly increased after TB-EPS extraction, while the sludge particle more easily absorbed water molecules, thereby increasing adsorption water and capillary water within the sludge flocs. Microbiota quorum sensing (QS) induced by 3O-C6-HSL (N-(β-ketocaproyl)-DL-homoserine lactone) inhibited the calcification of anaerobic granular sludge (AnGS), and the mechanism of promoting the activity recovery of calcified AnGS was studied in this paper. Through research, it was speculated that 3O-C6-HSL acted on calcified AnGS residual microorganisms to trigger QS. It enriched many functional microorganisms. For example, it promoted the growth of Methanospirillum. The CO 2 could be consumed quickly by Methanospirillum and reduced the calcium carbonate formation. The increase of microbial biomass would promote the activity of sludge. What's more, the pore size and porosity of sludge would increase, so the mass transfer channel will be broadened at same time. All those, could help the calcified AnGS quickly restore the activity and anaerobic system recover normal, which provided a new idea for the emergency rescue of anaerobic system in the future., (Copyright © 2021 Elsevier Ltd. The aim of the study was to use black liquor produced during the soda pulping process in a pulp and paper mill to increase methane production during pulp and paper industry sludge treatment and decrease the treatment cost. The effects of black liquor on sludge solubilization and methane production were assessed and the economic feasibility of the process was evaluated. Black liquor and NaOH were found to be equivalent in the thermochemical pretreatment process to solubilize sludge and disintegrate flocs. However, adding black liquor increased the background chemical oxygen demand and volatile fatty acid concentration and increased the amount of methane produced by approximately 7-30%. A start-up delay was emphasized by first-order kinetics model due to black liquor addition while methane production remained stable. Economic assessments of five scenarios were performed. It was found to be economically feasible to use black liquor to replace NaOH for the thermal pretreatment process. With the increased awareness of reusing solid wastes for higher sustainability and the concern of water pollution associated with phosphorus over-emission, there are strong interests in developing solid waste based adsorbents for purifying phosphorus-containing wastewater. As a rich calcium resource, paper mill sludge (i.e., a major solid waste from pulping industry) can be used as phosphorus removal adsorbent after calcination. Thus, in this work, a simple and clean thermally treating route has been proposed for preparing calcium-containing biochar from paper mill sludge. The effect of the physicochemical properties of paper mill sludge and its carbonization condition on phosphorus adsorption has been analyzed. Moreover, the influence of some key adsorption parameters, e.g., biochar dosage, initial pH of solution, co-existing anions, initial phosphorus concentration and contact time has also been investigated. The results showed that the phosphorus adsorption data could be fitted well with pseudo-second-order kinetic and Langmuir isothermal models. The calculated maximum adsorption capacity of the as-prepared optimal calcium-containing biochar could reach to 68.49 mg·g -1 at 25 °C. Combined with the characterization results, it can be reasonably inferred that the adsorption process was chemisorption-dominated. Lastly, the application of this spent adsorbent in agriculture field has also been discussed. Paper mill sludge (PMS) raises critical environmental issues due to its disposal problem, but its high sugar content and well-dispersed structure make it a great feedstock for biochemical production. The technical feasibility of integrating cellulase enzyme production into lactic acid (LA) fermentation from PMS was investigated in this study. The low ash content of PMS suggests a great potential for cellulase production. The enzyme produced using PMS without any treatment gave an activity of 7.8 FPU/ml, a performance comparable to the commercial enzyme, Cellic CTec 2. The LA yield from PMS with in-house enzyme was 64.7% and 73.7% at the enzyme loading of 10 and 15 FPU/g-glucan, respectively. The LA obtained was optically pure L- isomer with over 99% purity. The optimal condition of LA production by Bacillus coagulans was found to be 50 °C and pH 5.3 (with 50 g/L CaCO 3 ). The effects of pure oxygen aeration on compositional characteristics of soluble microbial products (SMP) and extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) of the activated sludge acclimated in a sequential batch reactor (SBR) were explored in batch mode. The structure of the extracellular products would change with different aeration methods or aeration rates. The proportion of SMP of most oxygen aerated sludge was less than 10%, while that in air aerated sludge was as high as 30-40%. The proportion of TB-EPS decreased from 56.95% to 30.63%, and the proportion of LB-EPS increased obviously with the increase of oxygen aeration rate. The contents of the protein (PN) and the polysaccharide (PS) of extracellular products with oxygen aeration were significantly different, and the PN was much higher than PS (p < 0.05). The zeta potential of each component in activated sludge was negative, gradually decreasing with the progress of biological treatment. The fluorescence peaks in SMP, LB-EPS and TB-EPS with pure oxygen aeration were attributed to tryptophan PN-like and humic acid-like fractions. The results showed that the proportion of the components in the extracellular products could be regulated by adjusting the aeration rate and aeration mode, so as to optimize the treatment process of activated sludge.

Given the high content of Ca 2+ in waste paper recycling wastewater, the anaerobic granular sludge (AnGS) undergoes calcification during wastewater treatment and affects the treatment efficiency. To restore the activity of calcified AnGS and improve the performance of AnGS, four types of N-acyl-homoserine lactones (AHLs) were added to the AnGS system while papermaking wastewater treatment. The addition of N-butyryl-DL-homoserine lactone(C4-HSL) and N-octanoyl-DL-homoserine lactone (C8-HSL) had an inhibitory affect the COD removal efficiency and SMA of sludge at the inception. The addition of N-hexanoyl-L-homoserine lactone (C6-HSL) has no obvious effect on the COD removal efficiency, but can improve the SMA of sludge more obviously. The addition of N-(β-ketocaproyl)-DL-homoserine lactone (3O-C6-HSL) can increased COD removal efficiency and promoted SMA together obviously. The addition of C6-HSL and 3O-C6-HSL can increase volatile suspended solid (VSS)/total suspended solid (TSS), and regulate extracellular polymeric substance (EPS) secretion in AnGS. Analysis of microbial sequencing revealed changes in the microbial community structure following AHL addition, which enhanced the methane metabolism pathway in sludge. The addition of C6-HSL, C8-HSL, and 3O-C6-HSL increased Methanosaeta population, thus increasing the aceticlastic pathway in sludge. To elucidate the effects of extracellular polymeric substance (EPS) on the sludge dewaterability, this study comparatively investigated the changes in EPS composition and spatial distribution, together with the sludge dewaterability after lysozyme (LZM) conditioning. The protein concentration in the tightly bound EPS (TB-EPS) increased from 3.47 mg g -1 DS to 4.99 mg g -1 DS within the first 2 min, then gradually decreased, which could be described by a piecewise linear function. Unlike TB-EPS, the protein content variation trend in both soluble EPS (S-EPS) and loosely bound EPS (LB-EPS) followed the typical first-order kinetics. Additionally, the extended DLVO theory was employed in combination with viscoelastic acoustic response analysis to further explore the impact of EPS composition on water adhesion and microbial cell. After the extraction of S-EPS from the conditioned sludge, the adsorption free energy (ΔG adh ) of EPS ascended to -61.05 mJ m -2 , indicating the weakened microbial hydrophobicity. By contrast, the ΔG adh value declined after the subsequent extraction of LB-EPS and TB-EPS. Meanwhile, the adsorption potential energy between S-EPS and microbial cells showed an increasing trend, whereas the repulsion potential energy between TB-EPS and microbial cells fell to 1.40 × 10 4  kT, signifying a weakened adsorption capacity to water. Accordingly, the viscosity and shear modulus of each EPS layer were reduced after conditioning, which contributed to the transformation of bound water into free water. This paper reported a new method for the determination of the water distribution in sludge. It was based on a multiple headspace extraction (MHE) procedure to step-wise remove the water vapor from a closed vial containing a sludge sample, followed by a gas chromatographic measurement (GC). By plotting the GC signal of water vapor vs. the headspace extraction number, three different trend lines from the profile can be observed. From which two transition points can be determined and thus the stages for the free water, capillary water, and adsorption water release can be divided. Based on the sum of GC peak areas ate each stage, the content of these water types in the sludge can be calculated through a method calibration. The results showed that the MHE-GC method has a better measurement repeatability (RSD < 18.6%) and sensitivity (limit of quantitation = 0.028%) than the thermal drying method (used as a reference method). There was also a good agreement between the MHE-GC and the reference method on the free water and capillary water analysis. This paper describes a headspace gas chromatographic (HS-GC) method for the in-situ determination of the observed yield coefficient (Y obs ) of aerobic activated sludge from domestic wastewater treatment plants. It is based on the measurement of oxygen and carbon dioxide in samples that have been incubated in headspace vials for relatively short periods of time. The method has good precision (the relative standard deviation < 5.46%) and accuracy (the relative differences < 9.23% when compared with the data from the reference method). The new method is much simpler and more efficient than the reference methods and should greatly facilitate the testing in aerobic activated sludge related applications, such as system design, operation and management., (Copyright © 2019. This study reported two-phase electrochemical processes, including struvite electrochemical precipitation and ammonia electrooxidation, for the treatment of supernatant from the hydrolysis sludge. The results showed that in phase I, the removal efficiencies of 92.3% PO 4 3- -P and 50.1% NH 4 + -N could be achieved in electrochemical precipitation with magnesium sacrificial anode at pH 9.0 and 40 mA after 120-min electrolysis, and slightly increased to 95.1% and 57.3%, respectively, when current further increased to 120 mA, while the energy consumption (ECS, from 0.6 to 6.7 kWh m -3 ) and specific energy consumption [SECS, from 2.7 to 29.9 Wh g (PO 4 3- -P) -1 ] sharply increased. In phase II, the residual NH 4 + -N is further indirectly electrooxidized to nitrogen with modified Ti anode (Ti/SnO 2 -Sb-Pd). With the generation of active chloride, about 83.2% NH 4 + -N was removed with the molar ratio of Cl/N 5:1 at 50 mA after 120-min treatment, and slightly increased to 92.2%, when current increased to 125 mA, while SECS significantly increased [from 0.027 to 0.117 kWh g (NH 4 + -N) -1 ]. The results indicated that current were the crucial factors; meanwhile, lower current and longer reaction time may be the optimal options in electrochemical process with higher efficiency and lower energy consumption. Finally, the integrated process was conducted at the optimal conditions (pH = 9.0, I = 40 mA in phase I; Cl/N = 5, I = 50 mA in phase II) with the supernatant of the alkaline hydrolysis sludge. Removal of ammonia nitrogen (79.3%) and removal of phosphorus (94.3%) were achieved, confirming the feasibility of practical application for the simultaneous phosphorus recovery and ammonia removal.

A methane production system with continuous stirred-tank reactor, rumen liquid as inoculate microorganisms, and paper mill excess sludge (PES) as feedstock was studied. The work mainly focused on revealing the effect of feedstock concentration on the biogas production, which was seldom reported previously for the current system. The optimal fermentation conditions were found as follows: pH = 7, T = 39 ± 1 °C, sludge retention time is 20 days, sludge with total solids (TS) are 1, 2, 3.5, 5, 10, and 13% in weight. Daily gas yields were measured, and biogas compositions were analyzed by gas chromatograph. Under such conditions, the optimum input TS was 10 wt%, and the biogas yield and volume gas productivity were 280.2 mL/g·TS and 1188.4 mL L -1 ·d -1 , respectively. The proportions of CH 4 and CO 2 in the biogas were 65.1 and 34.2%. The CH 4 yield reached 182.7 mL/g VS (volatile suspended solid), which was higher than previously reported values. The findings of this work have a significant effect on promoting the application of digesting PES by rumen microorganisms and further identified the technical parameter.

The accumulation of ash, heavy metals, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (collectively called potential accumulating substances, PAS) was evaluated to ascertain the stability of lysis-cryptic growth sludge reduction process (LSRP) for municipal sludge treatment. One sequencing batch reactor (SBR) incorporated with homogenization was run to test the LSRP and another SBR as a control. The continuous monitoring results for 2 months showed that the ash and heavy metals slightly increased, and the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons decreased by 18.0%, indicating that there may be negligible accumulations during the LSRP. Their accumulations met pattern I, as demonstrated by statistical analysis, proving no PAS accumulation for LSRP. This was further confirmed by sludge activity and system performance. Moreover, the mechanism for no PAS accumulation was discussed. It was concluded that the LSRP was stable with no worries about PAS accumulation under the operational conditions.

Urban sludge was treated by Hydrothermal carbonization (HTC). The effect of hydrothermal carbonization temperature, mixing with or without catalysts on solid products yield, heavy metal contents, turbidity and COD value was evaluated. The result showed solid products yield decreased from 92.04% to 52.65% when the temperature increased from 180 to 300°C. And the Cu, Zn, and Pb contents under exchangeable states decreased and reached discharge standard. Addition of FeCl 3 or Al(OH) 3 resulted in a significant increase in the exchangeable states of Zn, Pb, Cr, and Cd and decrease in their residual states. The turbidity and COD value of hydrothermal liquid decreased from 450° to 175°, and 13 to 6.8g/L, with increasing hydrothermal temperature. Comparison with HTC, solid productivity from low-temperature pyrolysis is higher. The exchangeable states of Cu, Zn, and Cr exceeded the limiting values. Sewage fine sieved fraction (FSF) is a heterogeneous substrate consisting of mainly toilet paper fibers sequestered from municipal raw sewage by a fine screen. In earlier studies, a maximum biodegradation of 62% and 57% of the sewage FSF was found under thermophilic (55°C) and mesophilic (35°C) conditions, respectively. In order to research this limited biodegradability of sewage FSF, this study investigates the biodegradation of different types of cellulosic fibers-based hygiene papers including virgin fibers based toilet paper (VTP), recycled fiber based toilet paper (RTP), virgin pulp for paper production (VPPP) as a raw material, as well as microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) as a kind of fiberless reference material. The anaerobic biodegradation or digestibility tests were conducted under thermophilic and mesophilic conditions. Results of the experiments showed different biomethane potential (BMP) values for each tested cellulose fiber-based substrate, which might be associated with the physical characteristics of the fibers, type of pulping, presence of lignin encrusted fibers, and/or the presence of additive chemicals and refractory compounds. Higher hydrolysis rates (Kh), higher specific methane production rates (SMPR) and shorter required incubation times to achieve 90% of the BMP (t90%CH4), were achieved under thermophilic conditions for all examined substrates compared to the mesophilic ones. Furthermore, the biodegradability of all employed cellulose fiber-based substrates was in the same range, 38-45%, under both conditions and less than the observed FSF biodegradability, i.e. 57-62%. In this study we investigated the technical feasibility of convert paper mill sludge into fuel ethanol. This involved the removal of mineral fillers by using either chemical pretreatment or mechanical fractionation to determine their effects on cellulose hydrolysis and fermentation to ethanol. In addition, we studied the effect of cationic polyelectrolyte (as accelerant) addition and hydrogen peroxide pretreatment on enzymatic hydrolysis and fermentation. We present results showing that removing the fillers content (ash and calcium carbonate) from the paper mill sludge increases the enzymatic hydrolysis performance dramatically with higher cellulose conversion at faster rates. The addition of accelerant and hydrogen peroxide pretreatment further improved the hydrolysis yields by 16% and 25% (g glucose / g cellulose), respectively with the de-ashed sludge. The fermentation process of produced sugars achieved up to 95% of the maximum theoretical ethanol yield and higher ethanol productivities within 9h of fermentation., (Copyright © 2015 Elsevier Ltd. Column-type combined reactors were designed to cultivate micro-aerobic pentachlorophenol (PCP) degrading granular sludge under oxygen-limited conditions (0.1-0.2 mgL(-1)) over 39-day experimental period. Micro-aerobic granular had both anaerobic activity (SMA: 2.34 mMCH4/hg VSS) and aerobic activity (SOUR: 2.21 mMO2/hg VSS). Metabolite analysis results revealed that PCP was sequentially dechlorinated to TCP, DCP, and eventually to MCP. Methanogens were not directly involved in the dechlorination of PCP, but might played a vital role in stabilizing the overall structure of the granule sludge. For Eubacteria, the Shannon Index (2.09 in inoculated granular sludge) increased both in micro-aerobic granular sludge (2.61) and PCP-degradation granular sludge (2.55). However, for Archaea, it decreased from 2.53 to 1.85 and 1.84, respectively. Although the Shannon Index demonstrated slight difference between micro-aerobic granular sludge and PCP-degradation granular sludge, the Principal Component Analysis (PCA) indicated obvious variance of the microbial composition, revealing significant effect of micro-aerobic condition and PCP on microbial community. Furthermore, nucleotide sequencing indicated that the main microorganisms for PCP degradation might be related to Actinobacterium and Sphingomonas. Magnesium ammonium phosphate (MAP) method was used to recover orthophosphate (PO₄(3-)-P) and ammonium nitrogen (NH4(+)-N) from the alkaline hydrolysis supernatant of excess sludge. To reduce alkali consumption and decrease the pH of the supernatant, two-stage alkaline hydrolysis process (TSAHP) was designed. The results showed that the release efficiencies of PO₄(3-)-P and NH₄(+)-N were 41.96% and 7.78%, respectively, and the pH of the supernatant was below 10.5 under the running conditions with initial pH of 13, volume ratio (sludge dosage/water dosage) of 1.75 in second-stage alkaline hydrolysis reactor, 20 g/L of sludge concentration in first-stage alkaline hydrolysis reactor. The order of parameters influencing MAP reaction was analyzed and the optimized conditions of MAP reaction were predicted through the response surface methodology. The recovery rates of PO₄(3-)-P and NH₄(+)-N were 46.88% and 16.54%, respectively under the optimized conditions of Mg/P of 1.8, pH 9.7 and reaction time of 15 min., (Copyright © 2014 Elsevier Ltd.
