This paper focuses on negative consequences of social capital formation within ethnic business groups using historical evidence on three distinct farming protests involving ethnic groups in rural New Zealand. The paper begins by analysing some of the key debates relating to the role of ethnic business networks, ethnic social capital and its potential negative consequences. In particular, the paper discusses the recursive effects that the strong ethnic community solidarity can have in causing negative reaction and overt conflict between ethnic and local business groups. Highly organised Asian communities in New Zealand agriculture showed a strong intra-group orientation within their businesses, and formed social structures for the intra-group mobilisation and distribution of resources. Such ethnic solidarity in business was stereotyped negatively by the host business groups, and in conjunction with some other factors has led towards anti-Asian protests in rural New Zealand, such as in Otago during the late 1870s and the early 1890s, and particularly in Pukekohe in the mid 1920s. The increased use of information technology in health care allows researchers to generate data on rates of medication use among population groups, raising questions as to whether these rates are too high or too low. This paper presents findings from a study of records of all prescription medication dispensed in one New Zealand region (Te Tāirawhiti) over a one year period. The study examined patterns of psychotropic medication use amongst older people, by age, gender, ethnicity and socio-economic position. It concludes that the chances of being defined as needing psychotropic medication, that is, of being 'medicalised', are not evenly spread through the elderly population. Gender, age and ethnicity impacted significantly on whether prescriptions were received. Our results suggest the need for a nuanced understanding of the medicalisation of unhappiness and deviant behaviour amongst the elderly which takes into account barriers to treatment for some social groups. Many western countries have experienced increased rates of youth suicide over recent years. This has been an issue of particular concern in New Zealand, since it had the highest rate of youth suicide among OECD countries in the mid-1990s. However, while attention is drawn to the now declining youth suicide rate by politicians and policy-makers, what is obscured is a cohort effect. In this paper we will argue that a cohort effect is clearly visible; suicide rates among 15-24 year olds came to the fore in the mid-1980s, peaking 10 years later, and were displaced by that among 25-35 year olds by the late-1990s. Further, this century has been characterised by the rise of suicide rates among 35-44 year olds. This effect correlates with a dramatic downturn in the New Zealand economy in a five-year period bracketing 1970. We argue for an increased focus on social and economic factors underlying suicide. Social work students and practitioners often struggle to apply sociological theories to practice situations. This is made difficult because the application of sociological theory for social work is still a contested area. To assist students and practitioners articulate and explain sociological theory in their social work practice, this paper introduces a practical teaching model—one that is theoretically rich and simple to use. The authors have used this model to teach sociology for first year New Zealand social work students, with pleasing results. Taught in the foundation year of degree study, we show that there is utility for this model throughout social work education, most notably in policy, research and practicum courses. Teaching sociology is not without its challenges, and these are discussed. We argue that this model offers students and practitioners a straightforward 'nuts and bolts' method that can easily be drawn on in class and in practice to guide sociological theorising. Further, societal and personal value tensions can be reflectively teased out. New Zealand research suggests that CAM use by GPs has decreased, while referral to CAM practitioners by GPs has increased, and that patients often do not tell their health practitioners when they are using CAM. The New Zealand Medical Council has developed guidelines for GPs who use CAM. However, there is no research in New Zealand that looks at how patients and GPs respond to CAM issues in the consultation. This paper uses data collected for two research projects on doctor-patient interaction. For this research, consultations between 105 patients and nine GPs were video-recorded. In this data set, all doctors but one were 'orthodox' and to some degree reserved judgement on CAM, albeit remaining cautious in how they made this evident. Patients on the other hand demonstrated a variety of strategies to get CAM on the agenda, and GPs were careful to couch any criticism in such a way as to protect the 'face' of patients. Previous literature has applied system-focused structures to understand the success of First Nations Peoples' nutrition and exercise group programmes. Existing system-focused measures have included biomedical outcomes, access and service utilization. By broadening the focus of programme success beyond the system, we can evaluate programmes from a First Nations Peoples' lifeworld perspective. Critical hermeneutics and yarning using a lens of Habermas' Theory of Communicative Action to the literature has the potential to transform understandings of "success" in First Nations Peoples' nutrition and exercise group programmes. In this literature interpretation, we explored the critical success factors from a lifeworld perspective, giving scope to go beyond a system perspective to include a cultural, social or personal perspective. Our yarning led us to understand that there is a communicative relationship between explicit system structures and implicit lifeworld concepts that are critical success factors for First Nations nutrition and exercise group programmes. We have developed a set of reflective questions to guide others in considering a lifeworld perspective. Our findings represent a shift away from success measured by the dominant power structure to respect the lifeworld culture, knowledges and values of First Nations Peoples towards shared understanding and mutual decision-making. Peer support has a unique philosophy of practice, which is reflected in the way information is handled. To describe the way peer supporters use documentation in their work and explore tensions this generates. Qualitative study based on two individual or group interviews with each of 37 peer supporters and peer-support managers in Aotearoa New Zealand. Peer supporters challenged disciplinary uses of documentation by either keeping minimal information about their interactions with peers, or keeping notes in a collaborative, empowering and transparent manner. This generated tensions with regard to the wider mental health system, particularly in relation to an emerging national database of mental health service use. Funders and planners need to be aware of the reasons for some peer-support services' reluctance to participate in mental health information strategies. Participatory impact assessment is a term frequently used and often abused. It refers to an approach that includes interested and affected parties in deciding indicators and measures of environmental and social impacts, in evaluation of effects and monitoring. Involving communities in a participatory manner facilitates skill transfer, fosters buy-in and creates local social capital. This paper describes a participatory exercise initiated by a local authority (Council) in New Zealand. Based on the reported assessment and that of two others, five essential ingredients are identified for a genuine participatory exercise. Time and flexibility are key components. Living kidney donation is an alternative treatment option for end-stage renal failure. Prospective donors are protected from risk by counselling and assessment processes, to ensure they are fully informed about all the stages of donation. Drawing on in-depth interviews with 25 living kidney donors from across New Zealand, this article discusses donors' experience of the pre-donation screening process, donation workup coordination, psychological preparation, and post-operative follow-up care and support. In particular, the article examines donor perceptions of the informed consent process. The findings indicate that donors' experience of the consent process may be at odds with the New Zealand Code of Health and Disability Services Consumers' Rights 1996. Instead of a primary healthcare focus on the threshold elements of informed consent, this study indicates that more effort should be made to adequately inform donors and to clearly spell out each stage of the donation process to better meet donors' needs. Peer support is a fast growing type of service provision within the mental health sector. This study draws on interviews with peer supporters and peer support managers to explore the ways that risks of violence, suicide and self-harm are managed within peer support settings in Aotearoa New Zealand. Drawing on Nikolas Rose and other theorists, who define risk thinking as an attempt to 'discipline uncertainty', we argue that the philosophy of peer support is in tension with a 'risk consciousness' because it sees crisis as a learning opportunity. We contend that peer supporters are pulled towards the 'risk consciousness', which pervades the mental health sector, and that they address this by managing risk in various ways. Finally, we show that peer supporters challenge this risk consciousness by working with risk through a philosophy of engagement and relationship. As peer support becomes more integrated into the wider health system, the challenge will be to continue the development of risk practices which work within a strong peer support philosophy. Organ donation and transplantation has the potential to save lives. Organ transfer also raises a number of ethical and emotional issues, especially in discussions around anonymity protocol and in relation to the invisible but tangible presence of shared corporeality in the course of organ transfer. In this article, which is based on in-depth interviews with organ transplant recipients and members of donor families, these issues are addressed from the perspective of a sociologist interviewing people about their experiences in this domain. In particular, the article examines what it means to do sociological research on sensitive topics with vulnerable groups in light of institutional ethics guidelines that require protecting the emotional safety of researchers and research participants during the research process. In so doing, I identify several problems with formal ethics approval procedures for researchers engaging with vulnerable groups such as organ donor family members and transplant recipients, and some of the risks associated with taking an empathic approach to social research interviewing. This article presents information about the journal "Rural Society." The central focus of this journal is the publishing of current research on rural social issues in Australia and New Zealand. The work of health and social workers is vital to the maintenance of rural and remote towns and communities as they struggle through the economic and environmental strains of the past decade. Such changes are widely predicted to continue, with at times, increasingly savage impacts expected due to climate change.

In an online survey of transgender people conducted in Australia and New Zealand, half the respondents (50.6%) reported having made attempts to amend formal documentation to reflect their current gender identity, and that this was crucial to their sense of personal and identity recognition, as well as an affirmation of citizenship. Experiences and outcomes varied, even within the same organisation, leading to different degrees of difficulty and frustration. For gender to be changed on some documentation, the individual is required to show evidence of having had a related surgical procedure. Almost 90% of participants who had undergone surgery had also made attempts to change documentation, and a quarter of participants who had not undergone any surgical procedures had made similar attempts. Many historians of sexuality explore how sexual subjectivity has taken shape in recent centuries, while historical sociologists tend to focus upon the intimate and erotic aspects of emergent social institutions. Symbolic interactionist sociology can add a new dimension to the existing debates, shifting the primary focus from the history of sexuality to a theoretically informed analysis of sexuality in history. This essay applies symbolic interactionist writings on interaction, scripts and subjectivity to a reading of one particular case: that of a young man committed to New Zealand's Seacliff Lunatic Asylum in 1891 following his ‘absurd infatuation’ for another man. I attempt to show how symbolic interactionist theory can further enrich historical studies by teasing out the intricacies of the processes through which sexual selves have emerged in the past. What results is not a teleological account of sexual change, but an awareness of the ways particular contexts enable the construction of accounts of sexual subjectivity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The notion of ‘the school’ as a set of institutional processes and practices that shape the possibilities of educational research forms the focus of this article. It is argued that the discursive and material practices that render schools agencies of cultural reproduction also have effects for what research can be undertaken in them and how. With reference to a series of ‘episodes’ that occurred during research about young people and sexuality in New Zealand, evidence for how schools shape research endeavours is provided. These examples present a complex picture of the way in which schools simultaneously police and are regulated by symbolic boundaries of gender and sexuality. How school disciplinary power works to effect what it is possible to claim about the voluntary nature of student research participation is also explored. It is argued that through the powerful discursive and material practices that occur in schools, these institutions can impede research that attempts to transgress dominant meanings about gender and sexuality.
