The first perovskite solar cell (PSC) fabricated directly on a paper substrate is here reported delivering a maximum power conversion efficiency of 2.7%. The paper PSCs (PPSC) were developed with a low-temperature paper/Au/SnO2/meso-TiO2/CH3NH3PbI3/Spiro-OMeTAD/MoOx/ Au/MoOx architectureutilizingAu/SnO2 and MoOx/Au/MoOx stacks as electron- and hole- extracting electrodes respectively. The transparent MoOx/Au/MoOx electrode had a favourable combination of transmittance (62.5%) and sheet resistance ( $9~\Omega /\Box $ ). By comparing performance of cells on paper with those fabricated on glass and plastic films with different electrodes, we identify avenues to guide future improvements. All deposition processes are scalable and compatible with large area printing or evaporation technologies. Paper represents a lightweight, flexible, inexpensive, ubiquitous, and environmentally friendly cellulosic material, paving the way for integrating perovskite technology with other electronic components as well as for the development of independent light-harvesting photovoltaic devices on recyclable and low-cost cellulose paper substrates. In this technical report, we focus on reproducing the results reported in the paper “MemXCT: Memory-Centric X-ray CT Reconstruction with Massive Parallelization” [1]. MemXCT is a scalable approach to X-ray Computed Tomography reconstruction which removes redundant computation. We reproduced the single CPU/GPU performance as well as strong scaling experiments. We set up our configurations on Microsoft Azure CycleCloud and have two clusters. One cluster has 4 nodes with 60 CPUs on each node and the other cluster has 4 nodes with 4 NVIDIA V100 GPUs on each node. Both clusters come with InfiniBand. The original author conducted his experiments on Theta and Blue Waters supercomputers. We were able to reproduce part of the results in the original paper, however, failed to produce similar performance on other experiments. Junctionless flexible oxide-based electric-double-layer thin-film transistors (TFTs) are fabricated on paper substrates at room temperature. Channel and source/drain electrodes are realized by an indium–tin–oxide (ITO) film without any source/drain junction. Effective field-effect modulation of drain current can be obtained when the thickness of the top ITO film is decreased to 20 nm. These junctionless paper TFTs show a good device performance with a small subthreshold swing of 0.21 V/dec and a large on/off ratio of \2 \times \10^6. Flexible low-voltage electric-double-layer (EDL) thin-film transistors (TFTs) with a patterned indium–tin–oxide (ITO) channel are self-assembled on paper substrates by only one shadow mask at room temperature. The operation voltage is 1.5 V when a microporous \SiO2 solid electrolyte with large EDL capacitance is used as the gate dielectric. Such flexible TFTs operate in a full-depletion mode with a high mobility of 25.5 \cm^2/ \V\cdot\s, a low subthreshold swing of 0.16 V/decade, and a high current on/off ratio of \3 \times \10^5. The influence of mechanical bending to the electrical performance of the flexible EDL TFTs is investigated. This report analyzes the reproducibility of the paper “MemXCT: Memory-Centric X-ray CT Reconstruction with Massive Parallelization” by Hidayetoğlu et al. in the cloud as part of the SC20 Virtual Student Cluster Competition (VSCC). To reproduce the results from the original work, the ETH Zürich SC20 VSCC team performed a series of CT reconstructions and performed a scaling study using three provided sinograms. All experimental runs were performed during the SC20 VSCC on an HPC cluster hosted in the Microsoft Azure CycleCloud. In this paper, we describe discrepancies in results as a factor of the differences in experiment environments and insufficient parameter tuning. In part I of this paper, we developed physical insights into the role and impact of acceptor and donor traps—resulting from C-doping in GaN buffer—on avalanche breakdown in AlGaN/GaN HEMT devices. It was found that the donor traps are mandatory to explain the breakdown voltage improvement. In this paper, silicon doping is proposed and explored as an alternative to independently engineer donor trap concentration and profile. Keeping in mind the acceptor and donor trap relative concentration requirement for achieving higher breakdown buffer, as depicted in part I of this paper, silicon & carbon codoping of GaN buffer is proposed and explored in this paper. The proposed improvement in breakdown voltage is supported by physical insight into the avalanche phenomena and role of acceptor/donor traps. GaN buffer design parameters and their impact on breakdown voltage as well as leakage current are presented. Finally, a modified Si-doping profile in the GaN buffer is proposed to lower the C-doping concentration near GaN channel to mitigate the adverse effects of acceptor traps in GaN buffer. In many applications, top-k query is an important operation to return a set of interesting points in a potentially huge data space. It is analyzed in this paper that the existing algorithms cannot process top- k query on massive data efficiently. This paper proposes a novel table-scan-based T2S algorithm to efficiently compute top-k results on massive data. T2S first constructs the presorted table, whose tuples are arranged in the order of the round-robin retrieval on the sorted lists. T2S maintains only fixed number of tuples to compute results. The early termination checking for T2S is presented in this paper, along with the analysis of scan depth. The selective retrieval is devised to skip the tuples in the presorted table which are not top-k results. The theoretical analysis proves that selective retrieval can reduce the number of the retrieved tuples significantly. The construction and incremental-update/batch-processing methods for the used structures are proposed in this paper. Graph engines have been used in many applications to handle big graphs efficiently. The majority of the research to improve their performance has focused primarily on the design of efficient graph processing. This paper claims, however, the focus should be given also to graph storage design. This is because good storage design can improve both CPU performance and I/O performance of graph engines. In this paper, we propose an efficient data layout for single-machine based graph engines. We identify the common node access pattern of the graph algorithms running on single-machine based graph engines. Based on this finding, we propose the breadth-first (BF) data layout which places the nodes processed together in the same or adjacent storage space so that they can be accessed together as much as possible. Direct-drive wave energy converter (WEC) and buoy control algorithms have shown great potential for renewable wave energy extraction in ideal conditions. However the actual power take-off (PTO) impacts are barely considered in the WEC design. This paper highlights the demands of designing the WEC wave-to-wire control from a global point of view by studying the actual PTO impacts. A permanent magnet linear electrical machine (LEM) PTO unit is simulated and controlled to fulfill the WEC buoy control requirements. Several state of the art control algorithms, which include singular-arc (SA) control, shape-based (SB) control, model predictive control (MPC), and proportional-derivative (PD) control, are applied to maximize the wave energy production (mechanical energy). Multiple types of electrical PTOs, including ideal PTO, unlimited PTO and limited PTO, are all implemented to evaluate WEC wave-to-wire performances. Further, the PTO copper loss model and the PTO actual efficiency maps are introduced and studied to improve the electrical PTO operation efficiency. To further assess the control schemes in various wave conditions, one-year PacWave ground-truth data is applied as well. Numerical simulations are conducted using MATLAB/Simulink and the Simscape toolbox. The electrical PTO unit is composed of a LEM, an ideal inverter, and an ideal energy storage system. The results show that the actual PTO will impact the constrained controls (MPC and SB) less comapring to unconstrained controls (SA and PD). Although SB can produce the maximum energy with the limited PTOs, it is not robust for all wave conditions. Background: The accurate prediction of where faults are likely to occur in code can help direct test effort, reduce costs, and improve the quality of software. Objective: We investigate how the context of models, the independent variables used, and the modeling techniques applied influence the performance of fault prediction models. Method: We used a systematic literature review to identify 208 fault prediction studies published from January 2000 to December 2010. We synthesize the quantitative and qualitative results of 36 studies which report sufficient contextual and methodological information according to the criteria we develop and apply. Results: The models that perform well tend to be based on simple modeling techniques such as Naive Bayes or Logistic Regression. Combinations of independent variables have been used by models that perform well. Feature selection has been applied to these combinations when models are performing particularly well. Conclusion: The methodology used to build models seems to be influential to predictive performance. Although there are a set of fault prediction studies in which confidence is possible, more studies are needed that use a reliable methodology and which report their context, methodology, and performance comprehensively. Online healthcare applications have grown more popular over the years. For instance, telehealth is an online healthcare application that allows patients and doctors to schedule consultations, prescribe medication, share medical documents, and monitor health conditions conveniently. Apart from this, telehealth can also be used to store a patient's personal and medical information. With its rise in usage due to COVID-19, given the amount of sensitive data it stores, security measures are necessary. A simple way of making these applications more secure is through user authentication. One of the most common and often used authentications is face recognition. It is convenient and easy to use. However, face recognition systems are not foolproof. They are prone to malicious attacks like printed photos, paper cutouts, replayed videos, and 3D masks. The goal of face anti-spoofing is to differentiate real users (live) from attackers (spoof). Although effective in terms of performance, existing methods use a significant amount of parameters, making them resource-heavy and unsuitable for handheld devices. Apart from this, they fail to generalize well to new environments like changes in lighting or background. This paper proposes a lightweight face anti-spoofing framework that does not compromise on performance. Our proposed method achieves good performance with the help of an ArcFace Classifier (AC). The AC encourages differentiation between spoof and live samples by making clear boundaries between them. With clear boundaries, classification becomes more accurate. Accurate retinal fluid segmentation on Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) images plays an important role in diagnosing and treating various eye diseases. The art deep models have shown promising performance on OCT image segmentation given pixel-wise annotated training data. However, the learned model will achieve poor performance on OCT images that are obtained from different devices (domains) due to the domain shift issue. This problem largely limits the real-world application of OCT image segmentation since the types of devices usually are different in each hospital. In this paper, we study the task of cross-domain OCT fluid segmentation, where we are given a labeled dataset of the source device (domain) and an unlabeled dataset of the target device (domain). The goal is to learn a model that can perform well on the target domain. To solve this problem, in this paper, we propose a novel Structure-guided Cross-Attention Network (SCAN), which leverages the retinal layer structure to facilitate domain alignment. Our SCAN is inspired by the fact that the retinal layer structure is robust to domains and can reflect regions that are important to fluid segmentation. In light of this, we build our SCAN in a multi-task manner by jointly learning the retinal structure prediction and fluid segmentation. To exploit the mutual benefit between layer structure and fluid segmentation, we further introduce a cross-attention module to measure the correlation between the layer-specific feature and the fluid-specific feature encouraging the model to concentrate on highly relative regions during domain alignment. Moreover, an adaptation difficulty map is evaluated based on the retinal structure predictions from different domains, which enforces the model focus on hard regions during structure-aware adversarial learning. Extensive experiments on the three domains of the RETOUCH dataset demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method and show that our approach produces state-of-the-art performance on cross-domain OCT fluid segmentation. Gasoline blending scheduling uses resource allocation and operation sequencing to meet a refinery's production requirements. The presence of nonlinearity, integer constraints, and a large number of decision variables adds complexity to this problem, posing challenges for traditional and evolutionary algorithms. This paper introduces a novel multiobjective optimization approach driven by a diffusion model (named DMO), which is designed specifically for gasoline blending scheduling. To address integer constraints and generate feasible schedules, the diffusion model creates multiple intermediate distributions between Gaussian noise and the feasible domain. Through iterative processes, the solutions transition from Gaussian noise to feasible schedules while optimizing the objectives using the gradient descent method. DMO achieves simultaneous objective optimization and constraint adherence. Comparative tests are conducted to evaluate DMO's performance across various scales. The experimental results demonstrate that DMO surpasses state-of-the-art multiobjective evolutionary algorithms in terms of efficiency when solving gasoline blending scheduling problems. A group of geographically dispersed and logically collaborated emergency organizations are involved when emergency occurs. Two challenging issues are a reasonable emergency resource allocation mechanism and an efficient resource conflict checking and resolution control mechanism to ensure the conflict-free execution of global cross-organization emergency response processes. To address them, this paper proposes an approach to support emergency resource management including both intraorganization private resource management and cross-organization public resource management. The former has been fully discussed in our previous work using E-net. To cope with the latter, this paper presents a novel type of Petri net that is extended with both time and resource factors to model cross-organization emergency response processes. Then, according to the resource requirement analysis, their worst, delayed, and best cases are obtained. Next, emergency resource conflict checking and four conflict resolution strategies are proposed to resolve the detected resource conflicts for the delayed execution case. This paper shows how to use different resolution strategies to construct the conflict-free model by designing corresponding resolution controllers. This paper presents the design of a broadband and high-power amplifier with bounded performance technique (BPT). Like the real frequency technique (RFT) or the simplified RFT (SRFT), BPT achieves broadband performance via matching at some in-band discrete real frequencies. It solves some design issues that are not addressed in the RFT and the SRFT. Among them are the inclusion of the design specifications in the device selection and design process and the possible degradation of operation metrics that are not optimized. BPT also avoids complicated analytic mathematics by using circuit prototypes. In this paper, we show the design of an amplifier with BPT. It has a 3-dB compression power of at least 100 W and a drain efficiency of at least 50% over the band 1–2.8 GHz or 94.7% fractional bandwidth. In this paper, we propose the novel design of terahertz half-wave plate (HWP) by using the multi-layered metamaterials with some specific rotation angles, which can be given by composite pulse control (a well-known quantum control technique). Comparing to previous multi-layered design, a big advantage of this method can analytically calculate the rotation angles and can be easily extended to the multi-layered design. In this paper, we present the performance of four configurations of matamaterial-based HWP with 1, 3, 5, 7 layers and we demonstrate that our device can broaden the bandwidth by increasing the layer number via composite pulse control. Nowadays, the increased amount of users’ devices produce huge volumes of data that should be efficiently managed by modern applications. Streams are adopted to deliver data that, usually, are stored into a number of partitions. Splitting the data offers a lot of advantages as applications can process them in parallel, thus, they increase the speed of processing. Progressive analytics are also adopted to deliver partial responses, during processing, thus, saving time in the execution of applications. Data exploration and analytics queries are very significant for future applications. Usually, such queries demand for an ordered set of objects as a response and require intelligent predictive schemes to deliver the responses on top of the partial results retrieved by the distributed data partitions. A finite set of query processors are adopted to produce these partial results. Processors are placed in front of each partition and report progressive analytics to a central entity. In this paper, we envision the query controller (QC) as the central entity that collects progressive analytics and return the final response to users/applications. The QC receives partial ordered sets of objects and aggregates them to derive the final outcome. We focus on a QC that applies time-optimized techniques and aggregation operators to deliver every response, i.e., ordered sets, over streams of partial ordered subsets. We perform a comprehensive performance assessment with synthetic data and report on the performance of the QC. For the first time, considering the architecture of monolithic 3-D integration, we evaluate and benchmark the performance of 3-D logic circuits and stability/performance of 3-D 6T SRAM cells with monolayer and few-layer transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) devices based on ITRS 2028 (5.9 nm) technology node. The impact of random variations on the cell stability is also investigated. With the possibility of adopting monolayer or few-layer TMDs for nFET- and pFET-tiers enabled by monolithic 3-D integration, this paper indicates that the trilayer TMD device may substantially degrade the performance of 3-D logic circuits in spite of its higher mobility. This paper also reveals that stacking the monolayer pFET-tier over the bilayer nFET-tier may provide better nominal stability and read/write performance for 6T superthreshold SRAM compared with the planar technology, whereas the optimum 3-D configuration for near-/sub-threshold operations appears to be the monolayer pFET-tier over the monolayer nFET-tier. Besides the 6T cell structure, 8T SRAM cells are also investigated with monolithic 3-D integration for near-threshold/subthreshold operation. The age of information (AoI) is a key performance metric for data freshness in real-time systems, measuring the time elapsed between status updates received at a remote destination. This paper addresses the analysis of both the AoI and the delay for a system demanding timely status updates, consisting of an internet of things (IoT) community, and a multi-core edge computing node (EN). The IoT devices perform channel contention according to a slotted aloha non-orthogonal multiple access scheme with two transmission power levels to access the EN. The objective of the paper is the dynamic selection of both the EN computation capabilities and the suitable access probability for the two power levels, aiming at maximizing the time-average system utility, while guaranteeing the queues stability. The device end-to-end delay is analyzed by resorting to the martingale theoretical approximation under the condition that the Lyapunov optimization framework is performed on a time slot basis, hence leading to a novel instantaneous mixed integer problem formulation. Furthermore, the generalized benders decomposition method is employed to provide a suboptimal solution for the formulated problem. The recent progress in III-nitride tunnel junction (TJ) contacts for optoelectronic devices is summarized in this review paper. Due to the rapid developments of various III-nitride based optoelectronic devices for different emerging applications, TJs are of interest for these devices to achieve more efficient device performance. This review paper first briefly describes the working principles of TJs and the advantages of employing TJs in optoelectronic devices. The significant advancements in III-nitride TJs realized by metalorganic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) and molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) are addressed, as well as their TJ device performances. In this paper, we perform an in-depth analysis of the single-event effects observed during testing at medical electron linacs and an experimental high-energy electron linac. For electron irradiations, the medical linacs are most commonly used due to their availability and flexibility. Whereas previous efforts were made to characterize the cross sections at higher energies, where the nuclear interaction cross section is higher, the focus of this paper is on the complete overview of relevant electron energies. Irradiations at an electron linac were made with two different devices, with a large difference in feature size. With the success of wireless sensor networks (WSNs), traditional engineering and infrastructure industries are starting to develop solutions using WSN technologies. One of the main challenges of designing and developing WSNs for industrial monitoring and control is satisfying their strict reliability requirements. In this paper, we present a network-level reliability model, namely, end-to-end data delivery reliability (E2E-DDR), for estimating and optimizing the reliability performance of WSNs. In the E2E-DDR model, a framework is presented for capturing the mapping function between the packet reception ratio, background noise, and received signal strength (RSS). We use an alpha-stable distribution to accurately represent the background noise and a modified log-normal path loss model to more realistically describe the RSS. We also report a comprehensive performance evaluation performed by applying the E2E-DDR model in a real-world case study to estimate the network-level reliability and optimize the WSN deployment parameters. Note to Practitioners—The goal of this paper is to improve the estimation and optimization of the network-level reliability performance of industrial wireless sensor networks (WSNs) to satisfy their strict control requirements. In harsh industrial application scenarios, many factors affect radio link quality, such as RF transmit power, communication distance, and random background noise. Existing link quality estimation approaches mainly focus on providing a smoothed estimation of radio link quality without any solution for optimizing communication reliability to satisfy certain requirements. This paper suggests a new approach in which WSN nodes are used to measure and estimate the parameters of the scenario in which the nodes will be deployed and then to estimate and optimize the worst case reliability (which is a lower-bound value rather than a smoothed value) to ensure that the network is qualified. Through a real-world case study, we demonstrate how to estimate the lower bound on reliability and how to optimize the reliability by computing the maximum deployment distance between nodes as an example. Conventionally, integrated drain-extended MOS (DeMOS) like high-voltage devices are designed while keeping only performance targets for a given application in mind. In this paper, for the first time, performance and reliability codesign approach using 3-D TCAD has been presented for various superjunction (SJ) type DeMOS devices. In this context, how to effectively utilize the SJ concept in a DeMOS device for System on Chip applications, which often has stringent switching and RF performance targets, is explored in detail in this paper. Moreover, design and reliability tradeoffs for switching and RF applications are discussed, while considering two unique sets, one with fixed breakdown voltage and other with fixed ON-resistance. The evolution trend of wireless communication systems tends to ultra-high data rate, ultra-low latency, and high bandwidth systems. It is foreseen that 6G wireless communication systems will be developed in the range of 100–300 GHz (upper mmWave band) and 300–3000 GHz (terahertz band). In such frequencies, the performance of junctionless field effective transistors is limited due to the reduction of carrier mobility in the device channel. In this paper, for the first time, a shell doped device is proposed to improve RF merit parameters and high-frequency noise performance of GaN junctionless double surrounding nanotube FET device with dual material outer gate (SD-GaN-JNFET). Simulation results show that the doping engineering in the proposed device reduces scattering caused by phonon and doping and increases electron mobility significantly. Parameters gmmax and ƒT of the SD-GaN-JNFET device in channel length of 15 nm are 666 μS and 8.47 THz, respectively, and NFmin<0.025 dB is satisfied in the frequency range of 0-500 GHz. The effect of shell doped area on the linearity performance is evaluated. Moreover, the device shows excellent reliability in terms of trap charges. A non-quasi-static small signal model is developed for the device and incorporated into a low noise amplifier (LNA) design. The LNA with S21 = 22.10 dB and NF = 0.032 dB in central band frequency (140 GHz) was attained. This paper describes packet fragmentation and reassembly to achieve reliable molecular communication among bionanomachines. In the molecular communication described in this paper, a sender bionanomachine performs packet fragmentation, dividing a large molecular message into smaller pieces and embedding into smaller molecular packets, so that molecular packets have higher diffusivity to reach the receiver bionanomachine. The receiver bionanomachine then performs packet reassembly to retrieve the original molecular message from a set of molecular packets that it receives. To examine the effect of packet fragmentation and reassembly, we develop analytical models and conduct numerical experiments. Numerical results show that packet fragmentation and reassembly can improve the message delivery performance. Numerical results also indicate that packet fragmentation and reassembly may degrade the performance in the presence of drift in the environment. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

The goal of the paper is to develop a hybrid modulation technique to combine space vector modulation (SVM) scheme and synchronous optimal pulsewidth modulation (SOPWM) technique for current source inverter (CSI). SVM provides better dynamic performance, but is unable to produce less total harmonic distortion (THD) on inverter current at low device switching frequency ($< $ 1 kHz). SOPWM provides less THD even at low device switching frequency, however it needs a conversion technique to operate CSI and it needs an additional control technique to improve dynamic performance. Hence to overcome these limitations, this paper develops a single modulation technique called optimal SVM technique that can achieve less THD as well as better dynamic performance. To develop optimal SVM technique, three methods have been proposed in this paper. These three methods do not require an additional conversion technique to operate CSI and they provide less THD even under low device switching frequency of 450 Hz. This paper clarifies the correct transmission mechanism, misattributed in the previous research, of a hydrogenated amorphous silicon thin-film transistor (a-Si:H TFT) device. Complete drain current–gate voltage (${I}_{\text {D}}$ – ${V}_{\text {G}}$) transfer characteristics including the forward and backward gate sweeps (gate voltage carried out in the OFF-state $\to $ on-state and the ON-state $\to $ OFF-state) are performed, and the physics models of an energy-band schematic are clearly explained. This paper reveals that the ${I}_{\text {D}}$ – ${V}_{\text {G}}$ curve stretch-out behavior of the subthreshold region is due to the leakage of the Poole–Frenkel region. At the Poole–Frenkel regions, electrons transfer to the drain terminal, and holes remain in the valance band of the a-Si:H bulk. The remaining holes represent the positive voltage and cause the electron barrier height lowering. This causes an increase in subthreshold current of the subthreshold region. Finally, three experiments are performed to prove the correctness of these models, and the a-Si TFTs device improvement methods will be proposed to enhance the stability and performance of product of the a-Si TFTs. To effectively solve the crosstalk issue in high-density crossbar array (CBA), high rectifying characteristics should be introduced in the resistance random-access memory (ReRAM) device, and in-depth understanding of the affecting factors on rectifying properties is essential for the large-scale application of ReRAM. In this paper, a high-performance self-rectifying device with CMOS compatible Pd/HfO2/TaOx/Ta structure was demonstrated in a 1-kb CBA. Forming-free, self-compliance, and high uniformity characteristics were successfully achieved. By modulating the thickness of the HfO2 rectifying layer, the rectifying ratio of device could be achieved as high as $\sim 2\times 10^{\textsf {3}}$ under ±3 V at low-resistance state (LRS). It was also experimentally confirmed that the selected unit cell in high-resistance state (logically the “ OFF” state) was stably readable when it was surrounded by unselected LRS (logically the “ ON” state) cells, in an array of up to $32 \times 32$ cells. Furthermore, a model based on interfacial barrier modulation and defects trapping/detrapping was proposed to elucidate the impact of the dielectric thickness on the self-rectifying characteristics of the device. Spatially-coupled (SC) codes are a family of graph-based codes that have attracted significant attention, thanks to their capacity approaching performance and low decoding latency. An SC code is constructed by partitioning an underlying block code into a number of components and coupling their copies together. In this paper, we first introduce a general approach for the enumeration of detrimental combinatorial objects in the graph of finite-length SC codes. Our approach is general in the sense that it effectively works for SC codes with various partitioning schemes, column weights, and memories. Next, we present a two-stage framework for the construction of high performance binary SC codes optimized for the additive white Gaussian noise channels; we aim at minimizing the number of detrimental combinatorial objects in the error floor region. In the first stage, we deploy a novel partitioning scheme, called the optimal overlap partitioning, to produce the optimal partitioning corresponding to the smallest number of detrimental objects. In the second stage, we apply a new circulant power optimizer to further reduce the number of detrimental objects in the lifted graph. SC codes constructed by our new framework have up to two orders of magnitude error floor performance improvement and up to 0.6 dB SNR gain compared to prior state-of-the-art SC codes. In this paper, improvement of torque quality and magnetic losses of a concentrated winding high-speed permanent magnet (PM)-assisted synchronous reluctance motor (PMaSRM) that can operate in the wide speed range are investigated. Optimization studies have been carried out to enhance the torque quality. In addition, ac copper losses in the stator coils and iron losses in laminations at high frequencies have been investigated. Since the PMaSRM can operate in a wide constant power-speed range, the field weakening performance has also been investigated. The motor performance results of the PMaSRM at both no-load and on-load conditions are examined by using Flux 2-D FEA software. This paper investigates the performance of a magnetic lead screw (MLS) equipped with skewed arc magnets. Skewed arc magnets are adopted to approximate the helical ones, because the latter is hard to realize. Although similar method had been proposed in the previous literature, discussion about the parameters of the skewed arc magnets was insufficient and little attention was paid to the gear ratio of the resultant MLS. In this paper, the principle of approximation by skewed arc magnets is proposed and discussed, and the performance of the MLS with skewed arc magnets is evaluated and compared with the ideal MLS in terms of thrust force, torque, and gear ratio. It is highlighted that the gear ratio is the fundamental indicator of the MLS’s performance, besides the thrust force and torque. It is shown that the gear ratio of MLS is mainly affected by the reference angle and the arc angle of skewed arc magnets, and optimal values for the two angles are obtained. In addition, the effects of the magnet magnetization on thrust force and torque are analyzed. The p-n junction is the fundamental building block for electronics and photonics applications. In a conventional p-n junction, the performance parameters cannot be tuned due to the fixed doping level after ion implantation. In this paper, reconfigurable p-n or n-p junctions were built based on the ambipolar black phosphorus (BP) and other 2-D materials, namely, graphene and hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN). High-quality graphene/h-BN/BP/h-BN sandwich device was created by the dry transfer method in an inert environment. Graphene serves as the local back gate, which can tune BP partially into either n-type or p-type material. The rest of the BP channel can be controlled by the back gate. The BP encapsulated device can enable the high performance of the ideality factor down to 1.08 (p-n junction) and 1.18 (n-p junction). The device developed in this paper has a more balanced ideality factor than previously reported reconfigurable WSe2 and BP devices. By tuning the back gate and graphene gate, the BP device can be tuned into four operational quadrants, namely, n-n, n-p, p-n, and p-p junctions. Moreover, the hole mobility of BP is up to 404 cm2/ $\text {V}\cdot \text {s}$ at room temperature. This paper considers a massive random access problem in which a large number of sporadically active devices wish to communicate with a base station (BS) equipped with massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) antennas. Each device is preassigned a unique signature sequence, and the BS identifies the active devices by detecting which sequences are transmitted. This device activity detection problem can be formulated as a maximum likelihood estimation (MLE) problem for which the sample covariance matrix of the received signal is a sufficient statistic. The goal of this paper is to characterize the feasible set of problem parameters under which this covariance based approach is able to successfully recover the device activities in the massive MIMO regime. Through an analysis of the asymptotic behaviors of MLE via its associated Fisher information matrix, this paper derives a necessary and sufficient condition on the Fisher information matrix to ensure a vanishing probability of detection error as the number of antennas goes to infinity, based on which a numerical phase transition analysis is obtained. This condition is also examined from a perspective of covariance matching, which relates the phase transition analysis to a recently derived scaling law. Further, we provide a characterization of the distribution of the estimation error in MLE, based on which the error probabilities in device activity detection can be accurately predicted. This paper presents improved indices to evaluate the contribution of reactive power compensators at HVdc converter terminals. The presence of such compensators impacts converter performance, such as the maximum available power (MAP) limit, susceptance to commutation failure, fault recovery time and temporary over voltage. Traditionally, the Effective Short Circuit Ratio (ESCR) has been used to indicate system strength. However, this index cannot be directly applied when power-electronics based converters are used to provide the reactive power support. The approach of this paper is to use an improved form of the ‘Apparent increase in Short Circuit Ratio’ (AISCR) index to quantify the impact of the compensator on the HVdc system. This index is evaluated by comparing the performance with the reactive power device with a system without the device, but having the same performance. The paper shows that a single AISCR index cannot quantify all behaviors and suggest modifications to AISCR for each of several HVdc phenomena. In the wide field of tumor treatment, thermal ablation procedures are very promising. Alternating magnetic fields are used to transfer the energy from outside the patient to the tumor area located anywhere in the body. This energy is converted to heat by implanted devices located in the tumor area. In this paper, the spatial distribution of the magnetic field of different circular coil configurations is analyzed and optimized with focus on patients’ safety and on coil configuration performance. The analysis is based on several performance criteria and is conducted with respect to the worst case scenario of a contactless thermal tumor ablation of deep-seated tumors, in which the energy has to be transferred over a considerably large distance. The magnetic field and the specific absorption rate (SAR) are calculated numerically and the performance criteria are evaluated based on a model of a human body including a tumor area. The most suitable coil configurations for different application scenarios are presented and a thermal analysis is done. Based on this, the minimum required heating power, coil current and number of coil windings, and the corresponding maximum SAR to achieve an adequate rise of tissue temperature are evaluated. For a heating power of 1.45 W, a minimum SAR of 130 mW/kg, a maximum power transfer efficiency of 1.05%, and a maximum coupling coefficient of 0.00695 is achieved. This paper proposes a new paradigm for spectrum sharing between cellular wireless communications (CWC) and radio astronomy systems (RAS). In contrast to the existing paradigm of geographical and spectral isolation between CWC and RAS, this paper develops a three phase spectrum access, which enables geographical and spectral coexistence between CWC and RAS. Shared spectrum access zone (SSAZ) is created around the RAS site and CWC cells within the SSAZ follow the three phase spectrum access scheme while those outside the SSAZ have full spectrum access. In addition, system characteristics-based improved spectrum sharing is developed. Furthermore, a built-in fine tuning mechanism is presented for addressing mismatches between design and practical environments as well as for facilitating service evolutions. Performance evaluation results demonstrate that the proposed paradigm offers 1) certain guaranteed spectrum access to RAS, which is impossible in the existing paradigm, 2) capability to handle higher peak and mean traffics to CWC under spectrum restructuring of both CWC and RAS bands, and 3) overall improved spectrum utilization. In this paper, circuit level analysis of the high frequency and low noise performance of an RF CMOS device with L\mathrm{ eff}= 36 nm is performed using various layout schemes. By using the modeling methodology of interconnect metals and vias, it is found that the gate parasitic capacitance from the interconnects mainly affects the degradation of high frequency and noise performance. An optimized layout scheme is proposed to reduce the gate parasitic resistance and capacitance in this paper, and the proposed layout exhibits improved RF behaviors for fT , f\mathrm {\mathrm {MAX}} , and NFmin at 26 GHz up to ~13%, ~24%, and ~18% compared with the reference layout scheme, respectively. Tunnel FETs (TFETs) have been identified as the most promising steep slope devices for ultralow power logic circuits. In this paper, we demonstrate in-plane InAs/Si TFETs monolithically integrated on Si, using our recently developed template-assisted selective epitaxy approach. These devices represent some of the most scaled TFETs with dimensions of less than 30 nm, combined with excellent aggregate performance with average subthreshold swing (SS), of around 70 mV/decade combined with I\mathrm{\scriptscriptstyle ON} of a few \mu \textA / \mu \textm for |V\mathrm {\mathbf {DS}}| = |V\mathrm {\mathbf {GS}}| = 0.5 V. Here, we will discuss the device fabrication as well as the experimental electrical data. Extensive low temperature characterization and activation energy analysis is used to gain insights into the factors limiting device performance. This paper presents 2-D numerical simulation results of single-event burnout (SEB) in power trench accumulation mode field effect transistor (ACCUFET) for the first time. In this device, a p+ base region is used to deplete the n− base region to achieve a low leakage current density, and the blocking voltage is supported by the n− drift region. We find that the depth of the p+ base region determines both the leakage current density and SEB performance, as a result, there is a tradeoff relationship between the two characteristics. The 60 V hardened power ACCUFET shown in this paper could demonstrate much better SEB performance without sacrificing the current handling capability compared with the standard UMOSFET. The hardened structure mentioned in this paper indicates that an n buffer layer is added between the epitaxial layer and substrate layer based on a basic power device. As a result, the safe operating area (SOA) of the 60 V, 80 V and 100 V hardened ACCUFET discussed in this paper could reach the value of breakdown voltage when the buffer layer is over a certain value, that can realize safety operation throughout entire LET range. This paper presents the design and performance details of the Chevrolet Volt electric propulsion system. The propulsion system has two machines: One machine is operating mostly as a motor while the other machine is operating mostly as a generator. Both machines of the Volt electric drive system are permanent-magnet ac synchronous machine types with the magnets buried inside the rotor. The motor has distributed windings. However, as opposed to a conventional stranded winding, the Chevrolet Volt motor has bar-wound construction to improve the motor performance, particularly in the low to medium speed range. At higher speed, the skin and proximity effects in the stator bars lead to increased stator winding losses but are addressed in the design. The bar-wound construction also has excellent thermal performance, in both the steady-state and transient conditions, necessary for full electric vehicle (EV) driving. The generator uses concentrated windings. The concentrated winding construction has good slot fill and short end-turn length. These features resulted in good performance in the intended operational region and were an enabler for machine packaging inside the transmission. Both the machines exhibit excellent efficiency and exceptionally smooth and quiet operation. As our field matures, evaluation of visualization techniques has extended from reporting runtime performance to studying user behavior. Consequently, many methodologies and best practices for user studies have evolved. While maintaining interactivity continues to be crucial for the exploration of large data sets, no similar methodological foundation for evaluating runtime performance has been developed. Our analysis of 50 recent visualization papers on new or improved techniques for rendering volumes or particles indicates that only a very limited set of parameters like different data sets, camera paths, viewport sizes, and GPUs are investigated, which make comparison with other techniques or generalization to other parameter ranges at least questionable. To derive a deeper understanding of qualitative runtime behavior and quantitative parameter dependencies, we developed a framework for the most exhaustive performance evaluation of volume and particle visualization techniques that we are aware of, including millions of measurements on ten different GPUs. This paper reports on our insights from statistical analysis of this data, discussing independent and linear parameter behavior and non-obvious effects. We give recommendations for best practices when evaluating runtime performance of scientific visualization applications, which can serve as a starting point for more elaborate models of performance quantification. In virtual environments, spatial discrepancies between visual and haptic scenes negatively impact user performance and experience. This paper shows how spatial discrepancies due to pose differences can occur in a haptic augmented virtuality system with an encountered-type haptic display. To mitigate this problem, we propose visual guidance, an algorithm that dynamically manipulates the visual scene to compensate for discrepancies. The effectiveness of this algorithm was verified in a pair of studies involving a button pressing task and spatial discrepancies between ±150 mm and ±40°. Experimental results show that discrepant trials using the technique yield error rates and a number of speed peaks (representing the number of targeting movements) that are comparable to those attained in trials with zero spatial discrepancy. This result was also achieved without requiring a dedicated adaptation or training process, ensuring the algorithm can be used immediately by users. A pair of follow-up studies also indicates the algorithm has little impact on subjective ratings of simulator sickness, suggesting that sporadic use of the algorithm will not negatively affect user’s experience of a virtual environment. We believe that the visual guidance algorithm presented in this paper can be used to create more useful and compelling experiences in various haptic training applications incorporating encountered-type haptic displays. Although organizations regularly execute projects to improve their performance, there is still no agreement in the literature on how to evaluate their eventual success. As a result, scholars end up using different scales to measure the same outcome variable of project success, thereby causing inconsistency in research results. Existing project success evaluation models suffer from their inability to apply to all project types and lack of separation of project success measurement from that of project individuals’ performance (for e.g., of the project manager). Through two longitudinal studies based on the satisficing theory, this paper develops, validates, and illustrates generic scales to measure the success of any project, as well as the performance of its two key leaders. This results in three distinct project success dimensions: 1) Project management success—evaluates the performance of the project manager in achieving the project plan; 2) Project ownership success—evaluates the performance of the project owner in realizing the business case; and 3) Project investment success—evaluates the investment performance of the project for its funder. This paper contributes to the literature by offering a theoretically robust, multidimensional evaluation model that will enhance performance evaluation of both projects and their leaders. Being able to accommodate multiple simultaneous transmissions on a single channel, non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) appears as an attractive solution to support massive machine type communication (mMTC) that faces a massive number of devices competing to access the limited number of shared radio resources. In this paper, we first analytically study the throughput performance of NOMA-based random access (RA), namely NOMA-RA. We show that while increasing the number of power levels in NOMA-RA leads to a further gain in maximum throughput, the growth of throughput gain is slower than linear. This is due to the higher-power dominance characteristic in power-domain NOMA known in the literature. We explicitly quantify the throughput gain for the very first time in this paper. With our analytical model, we verify the performance advantage of NOMA-RA scheme by comparing with the baseline multi-channel slotted ALOHA (MS-ALOHA), with and without capture effect. Despite the higher-power dominance effect, the maximum throughput of NOMA-RA with four power levels achieves over three times that of the MS-ALOHA. However, our analytical results also reveal the sensitivity of load on the throughput of NOMA-RA. To cope with the potential bursty traffic in mMTC scenarios, we propose adaptive load regulation through a practical user barring algorithm. By estimating the current load based on the observable channel feedback, the algorithm adaptively controls user access to maintain the optimal loading of channels to achieve maximum throughput. When the proposed user barring algorithm is applied, simulations demonstrate that the instantaneous throughput of NOMA-RA always remains close to the maximum throughput confirming the effectiveness of our load regulation. This paper presents a new method for modeling the nonideal conductance response (CR) of synaptic devices. Unlike previous studies, which utilize physical device properties for modeling, this paper only uses the measured CR data. This allows the proposed modeling method to be easily applied to various types of synaptic devices without considering the unique physical properties of each device. An efficient piecewise linear approximation method which offers a tradeoff between computational complexity and simulation accuracy of neural networks is also presented to generate a linear device model out of nonlinear CR data. In addition, model parameters, which reflect the nonideal characteristics of the CR such as abrupt and asymmetric conductance changes, conductance variation, and limited conductance dynamic range, are introduced to evaluate the network performances in the presence of the nonidealities. By adjusting the model parameters, the desired CR satisfying the network performance requirements can be derived for device development. A three-layer neural network employing the device model has been designed and trained for the MNIST data set in order to demonstrate the application of the model to system-level simulations and verify the effectiveness of the modeling method. The vertical interlayer communication channel plays a critical role in defining the performance of a 3-D network-on-chip (NoC). In this paper, an arbitration-free design for the shared vertical channels is proposed. The proposed vertical arbitration-free 3-D NoC is compared with other 3-D NoC architectures using traditional synthetic traffic patterns and Rentian traffic emulating applications for chip multiprocessors. The results of the analysis show comparable performance in throughput, energy, and latency compared to a symmetric 3-D NoC with savings up to $\approx { 20\%}$ in area. Electrical power system monitoring, protection, operation, and control schemes are undergoing significant changes toward the next generation fully automated, resilient, and self-healing grids. At present, there still exists a lack of available user-friendly tools for the synchronized measurement technology supported application design. This paper presents a synchro-measurement application development framework (SADF) to promote a simplified design and thorough validation of synchro-measurement (IEEE Standard C37.118.2-2011) supported user-defined applications under realistic conditions. The proposed SADF supports online receiving of a phasor measurement unit (PMU) or phasor data concentrator (PDC) provided data stream and enables simultaneous use of processed machine-readable synchro-measurements in advanced user-defined applications. This paper fills the scientific gap between the IEEE Standard C37.118.2-2011 specifications and its implementation by proposing a novel robust communication technique and efficient synchro-measurement data parsing methodology. As a proof of concept, the proposed SADF is implemented as a novel open-source MATLAB library. Combining this library with MATLAB’s signal processing and visualization functions allows mastering the design and validation of complex wide-area monitoring, protection, and control applications, as well as PMU/PDC performance and compliance verification. Finally, this paper verifies the proposed library against the standard specifications, assesses its interoperability and performance via a cyber-physical simulation platform, and presents online voltage magnitude monitoring as an example application. This paper deals with measurement methodologies for establishing indicators and metrics in order to assess the performance of vibration energy scavengers. The measurement method proposed here is based on the analysis of the flow of energy through several sections of the harvester, which sometime can include complex architectures and nonlinear phenomena. It is worth noting that the proposed solution is applicable not only to linear transducers in presence of periodic vibration source, as mainly proposed in the literature, but also to nonlinear harvester with its conditioning architectures/circuits and in presence of both stochastic and periodic sources. In this context, all the features have been studied from a generalized point of view which can be applied to study a wide range of Lead Zirconate Titanate-based architectures also exploring the effect of parameters variation, transducer architecture, and its consequence in terms of output performance as function of the kinetic input energy parameters. In particular, we outline a new metric addressing the limits of current solutions which the focus on a specific prototype composed of a single transduction element. This paper develops, from theory, a metric for analyzing the implementation of a performance measurement strategy and, in order to experimentally validate this methodology, considers four case studies, which represent the most popular architectures of scavengers proposed in the literature. The metric is first introduced, than the principle of the transducers under analysis is presented, analytical models have been developed, then, numerical analyses have been performed and the obtained behaviors have been validated from an experimental point of view, including characterization and performance evaluation; a comparison as respect the current figure of merits, applied in a specific device, has also been accomplished highlighting the suitability of the proposed methodology.
