This study examined the associations between sensory impairment (SI), lack of social contact during the COVID-19 pandemic, and depressive symptoms among Americans aged 50 and above. We employed data from the 2018 and 2020 Health and Retirement Study (N = 13,460) to examine four SI groups: no SI, visual impairment (VI) only, hearing impairment (HI) only, and dual sensory impairment (DSI). First, multilevel models were employed to estimate the associations between SI and depressive symptoms before and during the pandemic using the full dataset (N = 13,460). Second, linear regression models were employed to estimate the moderation effect of lack of social contact during the pandemic using the 2020 wave data only (N = 4,133). Among older adults, 15.60% had VI only, 10.16% had HI only, and 9.66% had DSI. All SI groups reported significantly more depressive symptoms than the no SI group. The differences between older adults with VI and DSI and those without SI regarding depressive symptoms narrowed during the pandemic. There was no statistically significant moderation effect of lack of social contact for SI and depressive symptoms. Older adults with SI faced mental health challenges and demonstrated psychological resilience during the pandemic. This paper provides a fresh look to investigate the linkage between rising house prices and corporate financialization. We match data of house prices in 237 cities with publicly listed non-financial and non-real estate companies to establish the causal relationship and further examine the underlying mechanism. The empirical study confirms that rising housing prices have a positive impact on corporate financialization, thereby emphasizing the significance of the housing boom for corporate financialization. We find that the deterring effect is stronger for firms with high cash holdings and is primarily driven by manufacturing firms. In addition, this study explores the potential mechanism generated by financing constraints and investment opportunities. Objective: Chronic pulmonary inflammation caused by long-term smoking is the core pathology of COPD. Alveolar macrophages (AMs) are involved in the pulmonary inflammation of COPD. The accumulation of damaged materials caused by impaired autophagy triggers inflammatory response in macrophages. As a key transcription regulator, transcription factor EB (TFEB) activates the transcription of target genes related autophagy and lysosome by binding to promoters, whereas it is unclarified for the relationship between inflammatory response induced by cigarette smoke extract (CSE) and TFEB-mediated autophagy. Thus, we investigated the role of TFEB-mediated autophagy in inflammatory response induced by CSE in NR8383 cells, and to explore its potential mechanism. Methods: Based on cell viability and autophagy, cells treated with 20% concentration of CSE for 24 h were selected for further studies. Cells were divided into control group, chloroquine (CQ, the autophagy inhibitor) group, CSE group, CSE + rapamycin (the autophagy inducer) group and CSE + fisetin (the TFEB inducer) group. The levels of tumor necrosis factor α (TNF-α), interleukin 1β (IL-1β), and IL-6 in supernatant were detected by ELISA kits. The protein expressions were tested by western blot. The intensity of fluorescence of Lysosome-associated membrane protein 1 (LAMP1) and TFEB was detected by immunofluorescence. Lyso-Tracker Red staining was applied to detect the lysosome environment. Results: CSE inhibited the cell viability, increased the contents of TNF-α, IL-1β, IL-6, the ratio of LC3II/I, and the level of P62 protein. Besides, CSE decreased the fluorescence intensity of LAMP1 protein and Lyso-Tracker Red staining, as well as the ratio of nucleus/cytosol of TFEB protein. Activating autophagy with rapamycin alleviated CSE-induced inflammatory response. The activation of TFEB via fisetin alleviated CSE-induced autophagy impairment and lysosomal dysfunction, thus alleviated inflammatory response in NR8383 cells. To explore the effect of music therapy on children with leukemia who have peripherally inserted central catheters (PICC). In this study, we divided 107 patients undergoing PICC into music group (47 cases) and control group (60 cases). The music group received music therapy during PICC, while the control group was given no complementary treatment. The total length of catheterization, the use of sedatives and the changes of pain level and emotion level before and after PICC placement were compared between two groups. Compared with the control group, the total PICC placement time of the music group was significantly shorter (35(30–40) vs. 60(60–60); Z = −8.307; p < 0.001), and the use of sedative medications was also significantly reduced (4.35% (n = 2) vs. 91.84% (n = 45); p < 0.001). Moreover, the pain of catheterization was significantly alleviated. The median difference of pain scores of the music group was significantly less (2(1–3) vs. 5(5–5); p < 0.001). The mood of patients was also improved. The median difference of emotional scores of the music group was significantly more (5(4.75–6) vs. 3(3–3); p < 0.001) than the control group. Music therapy is effective to use in PICC. It can shorten the treatment time, reduce the use of sedative medications, and improve the children's emotion and pain response significantly, which is worth clinical application. Unintentional drug overdose has increased markedly in the United States. Studies document an association between psychiatric disorder and unintentional overdose; we extend this research through a preliminary test of a causal model of recurrent injection drug use mediating this relationship. In a cross-sectional study of 241 adults in New York City with a possible current substance use disorder, we conducted conventional and Imai's mediation analyses to examine if psychiatric disorder is associated with increased prevalence of ever overdosing and if recurrent injection drug use mediates this association. Our cross-sectional data permit the first step of assessing causal models: testing if statistical associations are consistent with the model. Fifty-eight percent of the sample endorsed previous psychiatric disorder diagnosis and 35.7% reported ever overdosing. Imai's mediation analysis showed that, adjusting for covariates, the total association between psychiatric diagnosis and ever overdosing (adjusted prevalence difference [aPD] = 0.16, 95% CI 0.04–0.28) was composed of a direct effect (aPD = 0.09, 95% CI −0.03 − 0.21, p = 0.136) and an indirect effect (aPD = 0.07, 95% CI 0.02–0.13). Recurrent injecting drug use contributed to 42% (ratio of indirect effect to total effect; 95% CI 12 − 100%, p = 0.02) of the association between psychiatric diagnosis and ever overdosing. Conventional mediation analysis produced similar results. Our results provide a warrant for taking the necessary next step for assessing a causal model using longitudinal data, potentially providing a strong rationale for intervening on psychiatric disorders to stem overdose. A rare new quinolone alkaloid containing three degrees of unsaturation in the side chain, named as 1-methyl-2-[(6Z,9Z,12Z)-6,9,12-pentadecatriene]-4(1H)-quinolone (1), together with three known quinolone alkaloids 1-methyl-2-[(6Z,9Z)-6,9-pentadecadienyl]-4(1H)-quinolone (2), 1-methyl-2-[(4Z,7Z)-4,7-tridecadienyl]-4(1H)-quinolone (3), 1-methyl-2-[(Z)-8-tridecenyl]-4(1H)-quinolone (4), were isolated from the fruits of Tetradium ruticarpum (A.Juss.) T.G.Hartley. Their structures were elucidated by physicochemical properties and spectroscopic data. All compounds were evaluated for their cytotoxic activities against three human tumor cell lines, including Lovo, MDA-MB-231, HeLa cells, by MTT method in 96-well microplates, and compounds 1 exhibited potent activity against MDA-MB-231 cells with IC50 values of 7.95 μM. Tetradium trichotomum Lour., is a plant species endemic to tropical South East Asia with particular medicinal importance. However, very little analysis in this plant has been studied up to now from a phytochemical viewpoint. One new amide alkaloid (wuchuyuamide V, 1), as well as two known amide alkaloids-wuchuyuamide III (2), and wuchuyuamide I (3) were obtained from the fruits of T. trichotomum for the first time. Objectives: We investigated the neural mechanism of transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) in the treatment of post-stroke depression (PSD) using functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS). Methods: Twenty-six patients with PSD were randomly divided into an experimental group receiving tDCS and a control group receiving sham stimulation. The anode and cathode were placed on the left and right dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (PFC). Patients underwent fNIRS before and after treatment, combined with an emotional face sex judgment task and a '1-back' working memory task to assess reaction times and relative concentration changes of oxyhemoglobin (Oxy-Hb) in the PFC. Results: Reaction times for faces showing positive emotions decreased after treatment in the experimental group (P < 0.05). For faces showing negative emotions, relative Oxy-Hb concentration changes in the PFC were higher after treatment (P < 0.05), but there was no significant difference between the experimental and the control group. Reaction times during the working memory task in the experimental group were shorter after treatment (P < 0.05), and there was a significant difference between the groups (P < 0.05). Relative Oxy-Hb concentration changes in the left PFC were significantly higher after treatment in the experimental group (P < 0.05), and concentration changes in the right PFC after treatment were significantly higher in the experimental than in the control group (P < 0.05). Discussion: tDCS may improve the processing of negative emotions and working memory in patients with PSD by enhancing aerobic metabolism in the PFC, thereby improving depressive symptoms. We report the complete mitochondrial genome of Bottapotamon lingchuanense for the first time, which is found to be 17,612 base pairs in length, and contains 13 protein-coding genes (PCGs), 2 ribosomal RNA (rRNA) genes, 22 transfer RNA (tRNA), and 1 non-coding AT-rich region known as the D-loop. In addition, the mitogenome has 17 intergenic regions ranging from 1 to 1512 bp in length. The mitochondrial genome of B. lingchuanense is the first mitochondrial genome under the genus Bottapotamon, providing DNA data for species identification, enriching the species diversity of Brachyura. The maximum-likelihood (ML) tree and Bayesian inference (BI) tree based on the 13 PCGs of mitochondrial genome of Brachyura species showed similar topologies with high confidence, and the analysis results were consistent with the current mainstream classification system. Diabetic cardiomyopathy (DCM) is one of the chief diabetes mellitus complications. Inflammation factors may be one reason for the damage from DM. The purpose of this research is to study the potential protective effects of puerarin on DM and the possible mechanisms of action related to NF-κB signal pathway. Following administration of puerarin to the disease model rat, several changes were observed including the changes of serum biochemical index, improved diastolic dysfunction, and enhanced endogenous antioxidant enzymes activities, further NF-κB signaling activation. A new isoflavane, suaeglaucin A (1), which was isolated from the herb of Suaeda glauca (Bunge) Bunge, was elucidated as 5,6,8-trimethoxy-7- hydroxycoumaronochromone based on its MS and 1D and 2D NMR spectroscopic data. The structure of compound 1 was confirmed by X-ray crystallographic analysis. Five known compounds (2-6) were also isolated. All compounds were isolated for the first time from Chenopodiaceae. In this study, we first obtained the complete mitochondrial genome of Neilupotamon xinganense (Decapoda: Brachyura: Potamoidea). The genome is 16,965 bp in length and typically consists of 37 genes (13 protein-coding genes, 22 tRNAs genes, two rRNAs genes, and one putative control region). In addition, the mitogenome has 20 non-coding regions ranging from 1 to 683 bp in length. This study provides DNA data for further researches on population genetics and phylogenetics. We propose to further research the protective effect of MMI on myocardium ischemic rat model and H9c2 cells that underwent cell apoptosis induced by hypoxia. We established the myocardium ischemic rat model via the cardiac surgical proceduresin vivoand treated the model rats with different concentration of MMI.In vitro, with the pretreatment of MMI for 12 h in the model of Na2S2O4-induced hypoxia injury, the H9c2 cells viability was determined by MTT assay. We found that MMI had significantly improved cardiac function of the myocardial ischemia, and significantly decreased the reactive oxygen species level. The expression of P53, Bcl-2, Bax, and caspase-9 was also induced by MMI.In vitrostudy revealed a concentration-dependent increase in cell viability associated with MMI pretreatment. Annexin V-FITC and PI staining results showed that MMI had a preventive effect on hypoxia-induced apoptosis in H9c2 cells. MMI also inhibited the mitochondrial membrane potential decrease and increased total ATPase activity during hypoxia in H9c2 cells. In conclusion, MMI can enhance the cardiac function in myocardial ischemic rat and increase cell viability and attenuate the apoptosis in H9c2 cells induced by hypoxia, which was associated with inhibiting MMP decreasion and increasing total ATPase activity. Glycinin, an antigenic glycoprotein found in soybeans, is the major cause of allergic reactions in young animals. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of a prior immunisation of sucking piglets with glycinin on their post-weaning growth performance, serum immunoglobulin contents, small intestinal histamine release and mucosal histology. Forty piglets (7 d of age) were randomly divided into four groups of 10 piglets each. Piglets of Group C (Control) received a physiological saline solution, Groups Im (Immunised) and Im+S (Sensitised) were immunised twice with 500 µg/kg of glycinin at 7 and 21-d-old. All piglets were weaned at 23 d; Groups Im+S and S were sensitised with 2500 µg/kg of glycinin at weaning. Compared with Group C, in Group S the average daily gain (ADG), average daily feed intake and gain:feed ratio were decreased, and serum levels of IgG and IgE were increased. Furthermore, in this group, the histamine levels in the duodenum and ileum were significantly decreased, and the structure of duodenal and ileal mucosa was severely damaged. On the contrary, in Groups Im and Im+S the ADG was increased, serum IgE levels were decreased, intestinal histamine levels were increased and the intestinal mucosa was not damaged. These findings suggest that prior immunisation with glycinin can protect the structural integrity of the intestinal mucosal epithelia and alleviate allergic reactions in piglets. The psychometrics of the Parenting Scale's Overreactivity and Laxness subscales were evaluated using item response theory (IRT) techniques. The IRT analyses were based on 2 community samples of cohabiting parents of 3- to 8-year-old children, combined to yield a total sample size of 852 families. The results supported the utility of the Overreactivity and Laxness subscales, particularly in discriminating among parents in the mid to upper reaches of each construct. The original versions of the Overreactivity and Laxness subscales were more reliable than alternative, shorter versions identified in replicated factor analyses from previously published research and in IRT analyses in the present research. Moreover, in several cases, the original versions of these subscales, in comparison with the shortened versions, exhibited greater 6-month stabilities and correlations with child externalizing behavior and couple relationship satisfaction. Reliability was greater for the Laxness than for the Overreactivity subscale. Item performance on each subscale was highly variable. Together, the present findings are generally supportive of the psychometrics of the Parenting Scale, particularly for clinical research and practice. They also suggest areas for further development. A 2-part latent growth model can be used to analyze semicontinuous data to simultaneously study change in the probability that an individual engages in a behavior, and if engaged, change in the behavior. This article uses a Monte Carlo (MC) integration algorithm to study the interrelationships between the growth factors of 2 variables measured longitudinally where each variable can follow a 2-part latent growth model. A SAS macro implementing Mplusis developed to estimate the model to take into account the sampling uncertainty of this simulation-based computational approach. The integration of modern methods for causal inference with latent class analysis (LCA) allows social, behavioral, and health researchers to address important questions about the determinants of latent class membership. In this article, 2 propensity score techniques, matching and inverse propensity weighting, are demonstrated for conducting causal inference in LCA. The different causal questions that can be addressed with these techniques are carefully delineated. An empirical analysis based on data from the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth 1979 is presented, where college enrollment is examined as the exposure (i.e., treatment) variable and its causal effect on adult substance use latent class membership is estimated. A step-by-step procedure for conducting causal inference in LCA, including multiple imputation of missing data on the confounders, exposure variable, and multivariate outcome, is included. Three viologen derivatives with the ability to detect amines were synthesised. Upon interacting with amines, a rapid colour change caused by electron transfer and charge transfer between viologen derivatives and amines can be directly observed by naked eyes. Aim: The interindividual variability in the dose required for effective methadone maintenance treatment (MMT) for opioid addiction may be influenced in part by genetic variations in genes encoding pharmacodynamic factors of methadone. This study was conducted to identify some of these variants. Materials & methods: This study focused on 11 genes encoding components of the opioidergic (OPRM1, POMC and ARRB2), the dopaminergic (ANKK1 and DRD2) and the glutamatergic pathways (GRIN1 and GRIN2A), as well as the neurotrophin system (NGFB, BDNF, NTRK1 and NTRK2). The study includes 227 Israeli patients undergoing stable MMT. Results: Out of the 110 variants analyzed, 12 SNPs (in BDNF, NTRK2, OPRM1, DRD2 and ANKK1) were associated with methadone dose (nominal p < 0.05). Of these SNPs, ANKK1 r s7118900 and DRD2 rs2283265 are known to affect gene expression. Logistic regression of ive representative SNPs discriminated between individuals requiring a methadone dose of >120 mg/day and <120 mg/day (p = 0.019), and showed moderate sensitivity and speciicity (AUC of 0.63 in receiver operating characteristic analysis). Missing data are common in studies that rely on multiple informant data to evaluate relationships among variables for distinguishable individuals clustered within groups. Estimation of structural equation models using raw data allows for incomplete data, and so all groups can be retained for analysis even if only 1 member of a group contributes data. Statistical inference is based on the assumption that data are missing completely at random or missing at random. Importantly, whether or not data are missing is assumed to be independent of the missing data. A saturated correlates model that incorporates correlates of the missingness or the missing data into an analysis and multiple imputation that might also use such correlates offer advantages over the standard implementation of SEM when data are not missing at random because these approaches could result in a data analysis problem for which the missingness is ignorable. This article considers these approaches in an analysis of family data to assess the sensitivity of parameter estimates and statistical inferences to assumptions about missing data, a strategy that could be easily implemented using SEM software. Objective: To analyse the alterations of serum proteins in cases of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) in order to screen and validate serum marker patterns for the diagnosis of ESCC in the high-risk populations of Xinjiang, China. Methods: The serum proteomic patterns of 188 cases, including 139 patients with ESCC (54 Uygur, 45 Kazakh and 40 Han subjects) and 49 sex- and age-matched healthy controls, were detected using the SELDI-TOF-MS (surface-enhanced laser desorption/ionization–time of flight–mass spectrometry) technology with the CM10 ProteinChip. Differences in protein peaks between patients with ESCC and controls were analysed using the Biomarker Pattern Software, and a primary diagnosis model of ESCC was developed and validated with SVM (support vector machines). This model was further evaluated by a large-scale blind test. Results: Two hundred and eighty-three protein peaks were detected within the molecular range of 0–20 kDa, among which, 140 peaks were significantly different between ESCC cases and controls ( p < 0.05). A diagnostic pattern consisting of six protein peaks ( m/z 5667, 5709, 5876, 5979, 6043 and 6102) was established with a sensitivity of 97.12% and a specificity of 83.87%. The large-scale blind test generated a sensitivity of 91.43% and a specificity of 88.89%. Conclusions: The differential protein peaks analysed by SELDI-TOF-MS may contain promising serum biomarkers for screening ESCC. The diagnostic model which combined only six protein peaks had a satisfactory discriminatory power. The model should be further evaluated in other populations of ESCC patients and tested against controls. The nature and function of the discriminating proteins have yet to be elucidated. AbstractIn the present study, via applying the 2,4-di(2′,5′-dicarboxylphenyl)benzoic acid (H5L) as the organic linker, two new coordination polymers (CPs) with the chemical formulae of {[Co2(HL)(DMF)2(H2O)]·H2O}n (1) and {[Co2(HL)(bibp)(H2O)]·H2O}n (2) have been successfully prepared without or with the present of the second ligand 4,4′-bis(imidazolyl)biphenyl (bibp). Their application values on the renal failure during pregnancy was evaluated and the related mechanism was discussed at the same time. First of all, the viability of the renal tubular cells after compound treatment was measured with MTT (3-(4,5)-dimethylthiahiazo (-z-y1)-3,5-di-phenytetrazoliumromide) assay. In addition to this, the expression levels of the caspase-3 and caspase-8 was measured with western blotting assay.
