Abstract: Circulating hemocytes from larval stages of the paper wasp Polistes dominulus were characterized by light and transmission electron microscopy. Three types were identified: prohemocytes, plasmatocytes and granulocytes. The first two are agranular cells while the latter present typical cytoplasmic inclusions called granules. Plasmatocytes differ from prohemocytes being larger, showing lower nucleus/cytoplasm ratio and they possess many phagolysosomes. The substantial uniformity of most subcellular features and the presence of “intermediate forms” support the “single-cell theory” i.e., there is only one cell line that originates from the prohemocyte and leads to the granular cell passing through the plasmatocyte. This hypothesis seems to be confirmed by functional tests. Indeed, most part of cells adheres to the glass and is able to phagocytize fluorescent microspheres. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Morbidity and mortality from ischaemic heart disease (IHD) and heart failure (HF) remain significant in Europe and are increasing worldwide. Patients with IHD or HF might benefit from novel therapeutic strategies, such as cell-based therapies. We recently discussed the therapeutic potential of cell-based therapies and provided recommendations on how to improve the therapeutic translation of these novel strategies for effective cardiac regeneration and repair. Despite major advances in optimizing these strategies with respect to cell source and delivery method, the clinical outcome of cell-based therapy remains unsatisfactory. Major obstacles are the low engraftment and survival rate of transplanted cells in the harmful microenvironment of the host tissue, and the paucity or even lack of endogenous cells with repair capacity. Therefore, new ways of delivering cells and their derivatives are required in order to empower cell-based cardiac repair and regeneration in patients with IHD or HF. Strategies using tissue engineering (TE) combine cells with matrix materials to enhance cell retention or cell delivery in the transplanted area, and have recently received much attention for this purpose. Here, we summarize knowledge on novel approaches emerging from the TE scenario. In particular, we will discuss how combinations of cell/bio-materials (e.g. hydrogels, cell sheets, prefabricated matrices, microspheres, and injectable matrices) combinations might enhance cell retention or cell delivery in the transplantation areas, thereby increase the success rate of cell therapies for IHD and HF. We will not focus on the use of classical engineering approaches, employing fully synthetic materials, because of their unsatisfactory material properties which render them not clinically applicable. The overall aim of this Position Paper from the ESC Working Group Cellular Biology of the Heart is to provide recommendations on how to proceed in research with these novel TE strategies combined with cell-based therapies to boost cardiac repair in the clinical settings of IHD and HF. Bouteloua gracilis (blue grama grass) is one of the most drought and grazing tolerant plants in the short-grass ecosystem. To obtain information on their photosystem activities, we measured the fast (< 1 s) chlorophyll a fluorescence transient (the OJIP curve) from their leaves, and isolated cells grown photoautotrophically in suspension in a culture medium, or with added sucrose. One of our goals was to study the effect of different sucrose concentrations (0, 0.15, 0.3, and 3%) on PSII activity in isolated cells. Our results on cells suspended in culture medium, using the JIP-test, showed a decrease in PSII activity at increasing sucrose concentrations, while the photoautotrophic cells showed an optimal PSII activity, close to that of the leaves. Further, our data on cells grown in 0, 0.15, and 0.3% sucrose, but with added CO2, and measured while the cells were deposited on filter paper, indicate that supplementary CO2 can increase the PSII activity in the presence of sucrose, although further research is necessary to understand these results. In this issue we highlight three recent papers that demonstrate new strategies to extend the capabilities of paper microfluidics. Paper (a mesh of porous fibers) has a long history as a substrate to perform biomolecular assays. Traditional lateral flow immunoassays (LFAs) are widely used for rapid diagnostic tests, and perform well when a yes or no answer is required and the analyte of interest is at relatively high concentrations. High concentrations are required because usually only a small volume of analyte-containing fluid flows past the detection region, leading to a limited signal. Further, the small pores within paper matrices prevent the use of paper to control the flow of larger particles and cells, limiting the use of paper microfluidics for cell-based diagnostics. The work we highlight addresses these important unmet challenges in paper microfluidics: enriching low concentration analytes to a higher concentration in a smaller volume that can be processed effectively, and using paper to pump flows in larger channels amenable to cells. Applying these new approaches may allow diagnosis of disease states currently technically unachievable using current LFA systems, while maintaining many of the “un-instrumented” advantages of an assay on self-wicking paper. Abstract: During past decades, the considerable efforts have been made to utilize lignocellulose as biomass feedstock for the optimal production of bio-ethanol as an alternative source of fuel. In this work, the effective bioconversion of paper sludge to ethanol was investigated by using Zymomonas mobilis NBRC 13756. Major components of the raw paper sludge were carbohydrates and ash. Fermentation utilizing strains of Z. mobilis instead of traditional yeasts and the use of simultaneous saccharification and fermentation (SSF) process have been proposed due to their high ethanol yields with cost-effectiveness. Free cells of Z. mobilis resulted in no ethanol production even after 24h of incubation because cells’ growth was inhibited by metal ions contained in the paper sludge. The application of SSF with Ca-alginate-immobilized cells of Z. mobilis was performed and 18g/L of ethanol was obtained after 48h of incubation at an initial paper sludge concentration of 200g/L. In addition, the repeated batch fermentation of Ca-alginate-immobilized Z. mobilis cells was attempted for producing ethanol up to run 4. Our work suggests that Ca-alginate-immobilized cells of Z. mobilis could effectively produce ethanol from paper sludge not only under the batch fermentation but also under the repeated batch fermentation. The aim of this study was to develop a PCR-based rapid method to detect Bacillus cereus group cells from paper and cardboard. Primers targeting the 16S rDNA and real-time PCR with SYBR green I detection were used in order to be able to also quantify the target. Both autoclaved cardboard samples spiked with B. cereus vegetative cells or spores and naturally contaminated paper and cardboard samples were studied. Results were compared with culturing verified by commercial (API) tests. Several different methods were tested for DNA isolation from the paper and cardboard samples. Two commercial kits intended for soils, the UltraClean soil DNA kit and the FastDNA spin kit for soil, gave the most reproducible results. In spiked samples, the average yield was 50% of added vegetative cells, but spore yield was only about 10%. PCR results from adding vegetative cells correlated with added colony-forming unit (cfu) values (r=0.93, P <0.001) in the range 100–10,000 cfu g-1. Three out of nine studied paper and cardboard samples contained B. cereus group bacteria, based both on culturing and real-time PCR. The numbers were 102–103 bacteria g-1; and PCR gave somewhat higher results than culturing. Thus, real-time PCR can be used as a rapid semi-quantitative method to screen paper and cardboard samples for contamination with B. cereus group bacteria. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Single cells in genetically homogeneous microbial cultures exhibit marked phenotypic heterogeneity that is considered to bolster the fitness of the whole population. Heterogeneity on the single-cell level is typically masked in conventional studies of microbial populations, which rely on data averaged across thousands or millions of cells in a sample. Here we introduce confocal Raman microspectroscopy as a method for investigating and illustrating the spatial heterogeneity of microbial cell populations. Abstract: Different histochemical techniques were applied to examine the morphological features of the secretory cells of hypopharyngeal glands in the wasp Polistes versicolor. The results showed that most analyzed individuals present active glands with secretion stored in the cytoplasm. In some glands, morphological analyses revealed the presence of degenerative characteristics. Analyses of cellular integrity, however, did not detect dead cells. The results showed that, in P. versicolor, the development and regression of the hypopharyngeal glands were not age related, unlike glands of social bees. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Prolonged quiescence of haematopoietic stem cells has been proposed to support durable haematopoiesis through clonal succession. Genetic experiments in mice have implicated the cyclin-dependent kinase inhibitor (cdki) p21Waf1 in sustaining stem cell quiescence, and the cdki p27Kip1 in inhibiting the expansion of more mature progenitor cells. The expression of these inhibitory proteins in human haematopoietic stem cell candidates has not hitherto been studied. We describe a rare subpopulation (3 × 10−7 umbilical cord mononuclear cells) of lineage-negative cells that exhibited sustained resistance over months to cytokine-induced cycling, and characterized the expression of p21Waf1 and p27Kip1 proteins in these cells. Whereas p27Kip1 was uniformly expressed in these cells, the expression of p21Waf1 in this population and in lineage-negative CD34+ cells was variable. For this rare subset of cells exhibiting prolonged quiescence, p21Waf1 may be dispensable and p27Kip1 necessary for growth arrest. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article presents various studies related to women's health, as of September 1, 2003. According to a study as a consequence of mammographic breast screening programmes, ductal carcinoma in situ is diagnosed with increasing frequency. Mastectomy for localised ductal carcinoma in situ is thought to be an over-treatment by many physicians, but there is much controversy as to whether complete local excision alone is sufficient. Another study was undertaken to compare postcolposcopy management strategies for women referred for low-grade squamous intraepithelial lesions or oncogenic human a papillomavirus DNA-positive atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance, with cervical intraepithelial neoplasia grade 1 or less found at initial colposcopy. A study was also undertaken to compare alternative strategies for the initial management of a cytologic diagnosis of atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance.

Heterotrimeric G-proteins transduce signals from heptahelical transmembrane receptors to different effector systems, regulating diverse complex intracellular pathways and functions. In brain, facilitation of depolarization-induced neurotransmitter release for synaptic transmission is mediated by Gsα and Gqα. To identify effectors for Gα-proteins, we performed a yeast two-hybrid screening of a human brain cDNA library, using the human Gαs protein as a bait. We identified a protein member of the synembryn family as one of the interacting proteins. Extending the study to other Gα subunits, we found that Gqα also interacts with synembryn, and these interactions were confirmed by in vitro pull down studies and by in vivo confocal laser microscopy analysis. Furthermore, synembryn was shown to translocate to the plasma membrane in response to carbachol and isoproterenol. This study supports recent findings in C. elegans where, through genetic studies, synembryn was shown to act together with Gqα regulating neuronal transmitter release. When generally comparing the ATR procedure and transmission measurement procedure for a broader frequency domain, the differentiation between normal and tumor cells in the presence of contrast agents is superior when using the ATR procedure. THz contrast enhancement by using contrast agents derived from MRI-related contrast agents leads to only limited benefits and only for narrow THz frequency ranges, a disadvantage for THz medical imaging. This paper explores a formal model of autopoiesis as presented by Maturana, Uribe and Varela, and analyzes this model and its implications through the lens of the notions of eigenforms (fixed points) and the intricacies of Goedelian coding. The paper discusses the connection between autopoiesis and eigenforms and a variety of different perspectives and examples. The paper puts forward original philosophical reflections and generalizations about its various conclusions concerning specific examples, with the aim of contributing to a unified way of understanding (formal models of) living systems within the context of natural sciences, and to see the role of such systems and the formation of information from the point of view of analogs of biological construction. This system arises during the study of conduction of impulses down myelinated axons, incorporating electrical properties of the myelin. This article presents information on a gradient of bicoid (bcd) protein in drosophila embryos. According to the concept of positional information, the concentration of a morphogen instructs cells within an embryonic field of their position. The cells then interpret this information by an appropriate program of differentiation. Several models have been proposed that describe the generation of stable gradients of morphogens which could specify subregions of the embryo in a concentration-dependent manner.

In the current paper we provide a proof of NP-completeness for the Cell Formation Problem (CFP) with the fractional grouping efficacy objective function. First the CFP with a linear objective function is considered. Following the ideas of Pinheiro et al. (2016) we show that it is equivalent to the Bicluster Graph Editing Problem (BGEP), which is known to be NP-complete due to the reduction from the 3-Exact 3-Cover Problem – 3E3CP (Amit, 2004). Then we suggest a polynomial reduction of the CFP with the linear objective to the CFP with the grouping efficacy objective. It proves the NP-completeness of this fractional CFP formulation. Along with the NP-status our paper presents important connections of the CFP with the BGEP and 3E3CP. Such connections could be used for "transferring" of known theoretical properties, efficient algorithms, polynomial cases, and other features of well-studied graph editing and exact covering problems to the CFP. The blood-brain barrier (BBB) protects the brain by actively allowing the entry of ions and nutrients while limiting the passage of from toxins and pathogens. A healthy BBB has low permeability and high selectivity to maintain normal brain functions. Increased BBB permeability can result from neurological diseases and traumatic injuries. Modern engineering technologies such as microfluidics and fabrication techniques have advanced the development of BBB models to simulate the basic functions of BBB. However, the intrinsic BBB properties are difficult to replicate. Existing in vitro BBB models demonstrate inconsistent BBB permeability and selectivity due to variations in microfluidic design, cell types and arrangement, expression of tight junction (TJ) proteins, and use of shear stress. Specifically, microfluidic designs have flow channels of different sizes, complexity, topology, and modular structure. Different cell types are selected to mimic various physiological conditions. These factors make it challenging to compare results obtained using different experimental setups. This paper highlights key factors that play important roles in influencing microfluidic models and discusses how these factors contribute to permeability and selectivity of the BBB models. We have shown previously that the processing of asparagine-linked oligosaccharides in baby hamster kidney (BHK) cells is blocked only partially by the glucosidase inhibitors, 1-deoxynojidmycin and A'-methyl-1-deoxynojidmycin [Hughes, R, C, Foddy, L. & Bause, E. (1987) Biochem. J. 247, 537-544], Similar results are now reported for castanospermine, another inhibitor of processing glucosidases, and a detailed study of oligosaccharide processing in the inhibited cells is reported. In steady-state conditions the major endo-H-released oligosaccharides contained glucose residues but non-glycosylated oligosaccharides, including Man9GlcNAc to Man5GlcNAc, were also present. To determine the processing sequences occurring in the presence of castanospermine, BHK cells were pulse-labelled for various times with [³H]mannose and the oligosaccharide intermediates, isolated by gel filtration and paper chromatography, characterized by acetolysis and sensitivity to jack bean α-mannosidase. The data show that Glc3Man8GlcNAc2 is transferred to protein and undergoes processing to produce Glc3Man8GlcNAc2 and Glc3Man7GlcNAc2 as major species as well as a smaller amount of Man9GlcNAc2, Glucosidase-processed intermediates, Glc1Man8GlcNAc2 and Glc1Man7GlcNAc2, were also obtained as well as a Man7GlcNAc2 species derived from Glc1Man7GlcNAc2 and different from the Man7GlcNAc2 isomer formed in the usual processing pathway. No evidence for the direct transfer of non-glucosylated oligosacchaddes to proteins was obtained and we conclude that the continued assembly of complex-type glycans in castanospermine-inhibited BHK cells results from residual activity of processing glucosidases. In this paper, an automatic vision-guided micromanipulation approach to facilitate versatile deployment and portable setup is proposed. This paper is motivated by the importance of micromanipulation and the limitations in existing automation technology in micromanipulation. Despite significant advancements in micromanipulation techniques, there remain bottlenecks in integrating and adopting automation for this application. An underlying reason for the gaps is the difficulty in deploying and setting up such systems. To address this, we identified two important design requirements, namely, portability and versatility of the micromanipulation platform. A self-contained vision-guided approach requiring no complicated preparation or setup is proposed. This is achieved through an uncalibrated self-initializing workflow algorithm also capable of assisted targeting. The feasibility of the solution is demonstrated on a low-cost portable microscope camera and compact actuated microstages. Results suggest subpixel accuracy in localizing the tool tip during initialization steps. The self-focus mechanism could recover intentional blurring of the tip by autonomously manipulating it 95.3% closer to the focal plane. The average error in visual servo is less than a pixel with our depth compensation mechanism showing better maintaining of similarity score in tracking. Cell detection rate in a 1637-frame video stream is 97.7% with subpixels localization uncertainty. Our work addresses the gaps in existing automation technology in the application of robotic vision-guided micromanipulation and potentially contributes to the way cell manipulation is performed. Note to Practitioners—This paper introduces an automatic method for micromanipulation using visual information from microscopy. We design an automatic workflow, which consists of: 1) self-initialization; 2) vision-guided manipulation; and 3) assisted targeting, and demonstrate versatile deployment of the micromanipulator on a portable microscope camera setup. Unlike existing systems, our proposed method does not require any tedious calibration or expensive setup making it mobile and low cost. This overcomes the constraints of traditional practices that confine automated cell manipulation to a laboratory setting. By extending the application beyond the laboratory environment, automated micromanipulation technology can be made more ubiquitous and expands readily to facilitate field study. This paper proposes a resonant switching cell model to analyze and design the single-ended resonant dc–dc converters. The single-ended zero-voltage switching (ZVS) converters such as the Class E converter are efficient for megahertz switching because they feature low turn-on and turn-off switching losses. Also, they use only a ground-referenced switch, allowing a simple gate drive circuit. In this paper, we investigate the single-ended resonant converter with the small input inductance, whereas the conventional Class E converter has a large input inductance. The main contribution of this paper is to propose the resonant switching cell as an analytic model that simplifies the analysis and the design of the resonant dc–dc converters. Furthermore, this paper presents the design method of the resonant switching cell model for minimizing the resonant current magnitude and conduction loss while the converter maintains ZVS property. The experimental results from a 10-MHz GaN-based prototype demonstrate the feasibility and effectiveness of the analysis and design based on the proposed resonant switching cell model. A variant of the hypothetical scanning (HS) method for calculating the absolute entropy and free energy of fluids is developed, as applied to systems of Lennard-Jones atoms (liquid argon). As in the preceding paper (Paper I), a probability P[sub i] approximating the Boltzmann probability of system configuration i, is calculated with a reconstruction procedure based on adding the atoms gradually to an initially empty volume, where they are placed in their positions at i; in this process the volume is divided into cubic cells, which are visited layer-by-layer, line-by-line. At each step a transition probability (TP) is calculated and the product of all the TPs leads to P[sub i]. At step k, k-1 cells have already been treated, where among them N[sub k] are occupied by an atom. A canonical metropolis Monte Carlo (MC) simulation is carried out over a portion of the still unvisited (future) volume thus providing an approximate representation of the N-N[sub k] as yet untreated (future) atoms. The TP of target cell k is determined from the number of visits of future atoms to this cell during the simulation. This MC version of HS, called HSMC, is based on a relatively small number of efficiency parameters; their number does not grow and their values are not changed as the number of the treated future atoms is increased (i.e., as the approximation improves); therefore, implementing HSMC for a relatively large number of future atoms (up to 40 in this study) is straightforward. This review is intended to contribute to the evidence of the effects of static magnetic field on cells and tissue, as well as to present research results that will elucidate the complex matters involved in the formation and remodeling of cells. The cell characteristics studied in the papers that are reviewed include cell viability and proliferation, aggregation and their differentiation, structure and membrane potential. A moderate static magnetic field in the most commonly used range of 2-80 mT has potential application in the formation and remodeling of plant and human cells. However, in the case of cancer cells, the range of fields commonly used was 0.2-9 T. Magnetism promotes changes in plant cell growth, which prompts the cell to proliferate, thereby ensuring an increased rate of biomass production. Some researches presented the enhancement of the differentiation of plant cells and skeletal muscle tissue by over 30% at 80 mT static magnetic field. Changes in the cell cycle and growth reflect directly on the cell number and viability and provide useful information to detect modifications in the cell machinery. Static magnetic field, depending on its intensity, enhances cell proliferation and thus may improve, among other processes, tissue regeneration, wound healing and the inhibition of cancer cell proliferation. Researchers showed, among other things, that cells under the influence of static magnetic field changed their shape, had a larger chloroplast, stiffer cell wall, density of the cytoskeleton and cytoplasm contained several mitochondria. Numerous studies also discussed the behavior of the cell membrane of plant and animal organisms, including humans, under the influence of an static magnetic field. The effects of static magnetic field on the cell membrane of plant and human cells were similar. The research results indicate that static magnetic fields can significantly change membrane depolarization and its potential that regulates ion movement and thus can have a significant impact on the properties and biological functionality of the cell. Studies have shown that continuous application of static magnetic field caused deformation and damage of cell membrane. Based on the theoretical analyses presented also in this review, it can be concluded that static magnetic field affects cells and tissue, giving them changes in properties and behaviors and modulates, e.g. in the activity of ion channels. Thus it may produce effects leading to changes in the functioning of the cell. It is possible to formulate directions for further research aimed at using static magnetic fields for the non-invasive remodeling and formation of plant and human cells. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We demonstrate, for the first time, resistive RAM (RRAM) arrays where each cell can store 3 bits. Such full array-level demonstration is possible through special techniques (e.g., that exploit RRAM-specific characteristics of variations in cell resistances), presented in this paper, which efficiently allocate resistance range corresponding to each bit combination (required for proper write operation) while maintaining appropriate sensing margin (required for proper read operation). Our techniques are not restricted to 3 bits-per-cell only (and, in this paper, we demonstrate 2 bits-per-cell at the array level as well). Our measured results are based on multiple 4 Kbit arrays of 1T1R HfOx-based RRAM integrated in the back end of the line of 130-nm silicon CMOS technology. The article reports on the study concerning the significance of ribonucleic acid (RNA) fragments on skin. It cites that cultured cells and animals studies have been used to examine the details of how cells migrate through the epidermis. It reveals that single-stranded RNA molecules have turned down the certain proteins' production by binding to the mRNA that serves as recipe for the synthesis of the protein. It shows that the therapeutic potential of microRNA could be even greater if microRNA has turned out to be broadly important in controlling the balance between differentiation and stem cells.

The article reports on the identification of tetherin, a protein factor that stops human immunodeficiency virus-1 (HIV) stuck to surface of human cells and unable to spread. Virologist Paul Bieniasz at the Aaron Diamond AIDS Research Center and Laboratory of Retrovirology at the Rockefeller University in New York investigated cell-surface proteins that might keep to HIV-1 in the absence of viral protein U (VPU). It is said that there is much to learn about tetherin for there are hints that it has broad antiviral activity. Photogalvanic effect was studied in photogalvanic cells containing EDTA as reductant, new methylene blue, and safranine O as photosensitizer. The photopotential and photocurrent generated were 740 mV and 110 μA, respectively. The observed conversion efficiency was 0.4442% and the maximum output (power) of cell was 81.4 μW. The photogalvanic cell can be used for 95 min in the dark due to the storage capacity of the cell. The effects of various parameters on the electrical output of the cell were observed. In this second paper the authors study the transport properties of the lattice-gas cellular automaton presented in Paper I [J. Chem. Phys. 126, 194709 (2007)] to model adsorption and dynamics of particles in a lattice of confining cells. Their work shows how a surprisingly simple parallel rule applied to a static network of cells joined by links set in space and time can generate a wide range of dynamical behaviors. In their model the cells are the elementary constituent objects of the network. They are a portion of space structured in sites which are energetically different. Each cell can accommodate a given maximum number of particles, and each pair of neighboring cells can exchange at most one particle at a time. Many people find the manipulation of the human germline—editing the DNA of sperm or egg cells such that these genetic changes are passed to the resulting offspring—to be morally impermissible. In this paper, I argue for the claim that editing the human germline is morally permissible. My argument starts with the claim that outcome uncertainty regarding the effects of germline editing shows that the duty to not harm cannot ground the prohibition of germline editing. Instead, if germline editing is wrong, it is wrong because it violates a duty to protect. However, we also have an epistemic duty to gather evidence regarding the effects of editing the human germline which overrides any moral duty to protect future generations. Simple Summary: This scoping review of systematic reviews aims to accurately assess the degree of existing scientific evidence on the cancer hallmarks proposed in 2011 by Hanahan and Weinberg, in the form of systematic reviews and meta-analyses, applied to oral potentially malignant disorders, oral cavity and oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinomas, in order to point out gaps in evidence and lines of research that should be implemented in the future to improve the malignant transformation prediction, diagnosis and/or prognosis of these diseases. In 2000 and 2011, Hanahan and Weinberg published two papers in which they defined the characteristics that cells must fulfil in order to be considered neoplastic cells in all types of tumours that affect humans, which the authors called "hallmarks of cancer". These papers have represented a milestone in our understanding of the biology of many types of cancers and have made it possible to reach high levels of scientific evidence in relation to the prognostic impact that these hallmarks have on different tumour types. However, to date, there is no study that globally analyses evidence-based knowledge on the importance of these hallmarks in oral and oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinomas. A laboratory technique for measuring the mobility of solutions on filter paper has been presented. Various exudates exhibited different mobilities on filter paper; this also applied to exudates of the same origin (pleura punctates). When diluted, the exudates exhibited increased mobility, indicating that the concentrations of various exudate components were of importance. The addition of cells (5 × 106 and 25 × 106 P 388 D cells/ml exudate) did not significantly change the mobility, whereas the mobility of protein fractions (human albumin and gamma globulin) was inversely related to the concentration of the solutions. Removal of inorganic nitrogen sources by cells of the aerial microalga Trentepohlia aurea grown on the surface of substrate, such as filter paper, has been investigated in a batch system. When the alga grew on the paper dampened with medium, it actively ingested inorganic nitrogenous compounds in the medium. Immobilized cells on the filter papers were called ‘algal biofilm’ in this study. When the algal biofilms were soaked in modified Bold's Basal medium (using 1 g NH4Cl l-1 as a N source), the removal rate was 4.25 mg ammonium-N l-1 day-1 in 40 days. In modified medium with added 26 mg nitrite-N, the removal rate of the total inorganic N ion by the biofilms reached 5.11 mg N l-1 day-1. This removal rate of total N ion was higher than that in the medium by addition of 26 mg nitrate-N. In addition, we tried to examine simultaneous removal of ammonium, nitrate, and nitrite ions and growth inhibition of cyanobacteria in the medium by using the algal biofilms. In this paper were analyzed the scientific bibliographic sources regarding the physiological and biochemical role of zinc on the tissues and organs of the organism of breeding roosters. In addition, in laboratory conditions, our researchers studied hematological, biochemical indices as well as glycine, glutamate and cysteine content in blood serum, seminal plasma and reproductive cells of breeding roosters. It is established that this element has a beneficial action on the organism of breeding roosters, maintaining and stabilizing the indices listed above at the level of physiological norms, compared to the roosters from the control group, and at the same time participating in the antioxidant protection of cells and maintaining cell homeostasis by balancing transmembrane metabolism. Introduction: Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and Type 2 diabetes (T2D) are both ageassociated diseases. Identification of shared genes could help develop early diagnosis and preventive strategies. Although genetic background plays a crucial role in these diseases, we noticed an underrepresentation tendency of North African populations in omics studies. Materials and methods: First, we conducted a comprehensive review of genes and pathways shared between T2D and AD through PubMed. Then, the function of the identified genes and variants was investigated using annotation tools including PolyPhen2, RegulomeDB, and miRdSNP. Pathways enrichment analyses were performed with g:Profiler and EnrichmentMap. Next, we analyzed variant distributions in 16 worldwide populations using PLINK2, R, and STRUCTURE software. Finally, we performed an inter-ethnic comparison based on the minor allele frequency of T2D-AD common variants. Results: A total of 59 eligible papers were included in our study. We found 231 variants and 363 genes shared between T2D and AD. Variant annotation revealed six single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP) with a high pathogenic score, three SNPs with regulatory effects on the brain, and six SNPs with potential effects on miRNA-binding sites. The miRNAs affected were implicated in T2D, insulin signaling pathways, and AD. Moreover, replicated genes were significantly enriched in pathways related to plasma protein binding, positive regulation of amyloid fibril deposition, microglia activation, and cholesterol metabolism. Multidimensional screening performed based on the 363 shared genes showed that main North African populations are clustered together and are divergent from other worldwide populations. Interestingly, our results showed that 49 SNP associated with T2D and AD were present in North African populations. Among them, 11 variants located in DNM3, CFH, PPARG, ROHA, AGER, CLU, BDNF1, CST9, and PLCG1 genes display significant differences in risk allele frequencies between North African and other populations. Conclusion: Our study highlighted the complexity and the unique molecular architecture of North African populations regarding T2D-AD shared genes. In conclusion, we emphasize the importance of T2D-AD shared genes and ethnicity-specific investigation studies for a better understanding of the link behind these diseases and to develop accurate diagnoses using personalized genetic biomarkers. This paper details the content and structure of the folk concept of life, and discusses its relevance for scientific research on life. In four empirical studies, we investigate which features of life are considered salient, universal, central, and necessary. Functionings, such as nutrition and reproduction, but not material composition, turn out to be salient features commonly associated with living beings (Study 1). By contrast, being made of cells is considered a universal feature of living species (Study 2), a central aspect of life (Study 3), and our best candidate for being necessary for life (Study 4). Summary: With the commercialization of the electric vehicles, the large‐scale lithium‐ion cells as the power of electric vehicles are to be retired. The second‐use of retired cells is of great significance to improve the battery economy. A fast classification and regroup evaluation method of the retired lithium‐ion cells are proposed in this paper to improve the classification efficiency of retired lithium‐ion cells and adapt to the regroup under different conditions. The lithium‐ion cells after being balanced in parallel are charged in series with a constant current. A support vector regression (SVR) model with the parameters optimized by the particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm is built for the fast capacity estimation and the error will not exceed 0.3%. Different cells regrouped means different performance. In order to improve the consistency of retired cells and satisfy different using conditions, a Weighted‐K‐means algorithm is proposed in this paper to regroup the cells with the known capacity and internal resistance. The classification method is evaluated by the voltage consistency of cells using different working conditions, which indicates capacity occupied a large proportion can meet the requirement of energy condition meanwhile keep a good consistency. Low power cache memory in a system on chip is in high demand today. With the lowering of MOSFET's channel length, low-power SRAM design has become a more challenging task. This paper presents differential 8T SRAM cell with minimum power utilization. The proposed cell has one pair of transmission gate as access switches. Due to use of TG instead of pass gate access transistor its write access time (TWA) is short. The low power consumption of the cell is due to stacking effect. This paper compares design metrics of the proposed cell with conventional 6T (CON6T) and ZIGZAG 8T (ZG8T) SRAM cells. The proposed 8T SRAM cell shows 1.15×/1.17× improvement in TWA as compared to CON6T/ZG8T at a penalty of 2.65×/2× in read access time (TRA). The proposed cell consumes 3.22× less hold power compared to both CON6T and ZG8T SRAM cells. And the proposed cell consumes 4.41× (4.44×) less write power as compared to CON6T (ZG8T) SRAM cell. Our proposed cell takes 1.37× lower chip area as compared to ZG8T cell at the expense of 1.49× higher area as compared to CON6T SRAM cell. The proposed cell also achieves 1.5×/3× higher stability during write operation as compared to CON6T/ZG8T SRAM cell, respectively. Molecular dynamics simulations require barostats to be performed at a constant pressure. The usual recipe is to employ the Berendsen barostat first, which displays a first-order volume relaxation efficient in equilibration but results in incorrect volume fluctuations, followed by a second-order or a Monte Carlo barostat for production runs. In this paper, we introduce stochastic cell rescaling, a first-order barostat that samples the correct volume fluctuations by including a suitable noise term. The algorithm is shown to report volume fluctuations compatible with the isobaric ensemble and its anisotropic variant is tested on a membrane simulation. Cell penetration is a typical micromanipulation technique widely utilized in many cell biological applications. The significant cell deformation generated during penetration can mechanically damage the cell and even cause the death of the cell. Measuring the intracellular displacement resulting from cell deformation can provide a quantitative evaluation of the mechanical harm done to cells during penetration. The existing labeled intracellular displacement measurement approaches have limitations in spatial resolution and must introduce markers, which cause further harm to the cell. Moreover, label-free methods, such as traditional optical flow methods, are not suitable for measuring the inconsistent intracellular displacement distribution due to cell penetration. This paper presents a label-free noncontact method for measuring the intracellular displacements during penetration. First, based on a finite element simulation, the uneven distribution of intracellular displacements due to penetration was modeled by a quadratic model. Then, by combining the obtained displacement model with the Farnebäck dense optical flow method, a model-based optical flow method was developed to measure intracellular displacements. Finally, the method was used to ascertain the intracellular displacement in porcine oocyte penetration experiments. The forward-backward error of the proposed detection method is less than 0.5 pixels, lower by 49.3% and 26.1%, respectively, compared with two typical Farnebäck optical flow methods. This method could be used to analyze cell damage during penetration. Background: The effects of laser therapy on normal cells are well known and accepted, but the impact of this therapy on malignant cells are not yet fully understood. This review aims to map and outline what the scientific literature addresses on the effects of laser therapy on malignant cells. Methods: This review article followed the guidelines of the PRISMA‐ScR protocol, being all the search, analysis, and selection of articles based on it. Results: After all application of the predetermined criteria, five studies were included, dated between the years 2013 and 2021. With the complete reading of the selected studies, 100% of the articles were classified as category III of the Agency for Healthcare as Research and Quality classification. Similar themes among the papers included were investigated and compared. In these five studies, the visible red and near infrared wavelengths were used, and energy densities varied between 1 and 5 J/cm2. It was observed that low‐level laser could alter the expression of cell proliferation and migration proteins, such as cyclin D1, E‐cadherin, and β‐catenin. In addition, changes related to increased cell viability and metabolism were also identified. Conclusion: The low‐level laser seems to positively regulate the proliferative, migratory, and viability capacity of neoplastic cells, depending on the protocol used. All these studies included in the review are equivalent to in vitro studies; the cells are not in such a complex environment as is an organized tissue, making it necessary to carry out more complex tests, such as in vivo research. Cell regulatory networks are the determinants of cellular homeostasis. Any alteration to these networks results in the disturbance of cellular homeostasis and induces cells towards different fates. Myocyte enhancer factor 2A (MEF2A) is one of four members of the MEF2 family of transcription factors (MEF2A-D). MEF2A is highly expressed in all tissues and is involved in many cell regulatory networks including growth, differentiation, survival and death. It is also necessary for heart development, myogenesis, neuronal development and differentiation. In addition, many other important functions of MEF2A have been reported. Recent studies have shown that MEF2A can regulate different, and sometimes even mutually exclusive cellular events. How MEF2A regulates opposing cellular life processes is an interesting topic and worthy of further exploration. Here, we reviewed almost all MEF2A research papers published in English and summarized them into three main sections: 1) the association of genetic variants in MEF2A with cardiovascular disease, 2) the physiopathological functions of MEF2A, and 3) the regulation of MEF2A activity and its regulatory targets. In summary, multiple regulatory patterns for MEF2A activity and a variety of co-factors cause its transcriptional activity to switch to different target genes, thereby regulating opposing cell life processes.
