Background: The publication rates of abstracts after they were presented at the National Conference for Clinical Research (NCCR), a scientific conference held in Malaysia, was determined to gauge the scientific value of the conference, whilst providing comparative information with other scientific conferences. Methods: All the abstracts that were presented at the NCCR from 2014 to 2016 were analysed. Keywords from the abstract title, along with the first, second, and last author’s name, were searched via PubMed, Google Scholar, and Scopus to determine publication status. Results: A total of 320 abstracts were analysed. Of those, 57 abstracts (17.8%) were published. Almost 70% of published abstracts appeared in open access journals that charge article processing fees. Early publications (≤18 months from the conference date) had higher median journal impact factors compared to later publications. Approximately 42% of the published abstracts had collaborations with the Institute for Clinical Research (ICR) or Clinical Research Centres (CRCs). An increasing number of authors in an abstract and having the first author from a research centre, reduced and increased the odds of publication, respectively. Conclusions: The NCCR publication rate is lower compared to the reported average in other scientific conferences abroad. More encouragement and support to publish should be provided to the presenting authors. Clinicians should also be encouraged to collaborate with research centres such as those from the ICR or CRCs to boost publication likelihoods.

Background: Every year the scientific sessions of Annual National Conference of Indian Psychiatric Society (ANCIPS) are marked by presentation of free papers, posters, and award paper sessions, which are usually meant for presentation of new research which is not yet published. Hence, it is expected that these papers will be published in near future so that the scientific literature is distributed and shared with wider audience. Aim: This paper aims to evaluate the abstract to publication rate of papers presented during ANCIPS in the years 2012–2014. Materials and Methods: For this study, all the free papers, posters, and award papers presented during the ANCIPS of 2012–2014 were listed, and electronic searches were carried out to search for published articles. In addition, one of the authors of papers not found in the electronic searches were contacted through E-mail. Results: A total of 1081 papers were presented during the ANCIPS in the 3 year period under study. Of these, 64 were award papers, 622 were free papers, and 395 were posters. Majority (n = 807; 74.6%) of these could be categorized as research data-based presentations; this was followed by case reports/series (203; 18.8%), review of literature (n = 35; 3.3%), and others (n = 36; 3.3%). Overall, only 27% of the papers were published after at least 5 years of the presentation. Of all the award papers, 69.6% of papers were published, whereas only 26.8% of free oral papers and 22.5% of free posters were published. About half (45.6%) of the papers were published in national journals. In terms of indexing, among those which were published, 62.8% were published in Medline-indexed (PubMed-listed) Journals with a mean impact factor of 1. Conclusion: The present study shows that only 27% of the abstracts presented during the ANCIPS are ultimately published as full text articles in the next 5 years. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract Objective To determine journal publication rates of scientific papers presented orally at the European Congress of Radiology (ECR) 2010, with comparison of country data to ECR 2000. Methods All oral presentations from ECR 2010 were evaluated for publication between 2010 and 2014 using the MEDLINE database. Countries, collaborations, subspecialties, modalities and study design were ranked by publication percentage. Chi-square tests were used to compare publication percentages for each category of variables. Hazard ratios (HR) were calculated for each country relative to the host nation, Austria. ECR 2010 country statistics were compared with analogous data from ECR 2000. Results In total, 360/840 abstracts were subsequently published (43 %). The author’s country of origin (p = 0.02), subspecialty (p = 0.02) and study design (p = 0.001) were significantly associated with subsequent publication. Switzerland, the Netherlands, France and Germany were among the top six countries by publication percentage in 2000 and 2010. In 2010, Switzerland had the highest publication rate (62 %) and HR in comparison to Austria (HR 2.62 [1.31–5.25], p = 0.01). Three Asian nations increased relative publication rates over the 10-year period. Conclusion Several European nations consistently convert relatively high percentages of oral abstracts at ECR into publications, and the influence of Asian countries is increasing. Main Messages • Certain European nations consistently publish high percentages of orally presented abstracts at ECR. • The influence of several Asian countries on ECR is increasing. • Country, subspecialty and study design are significantly associated with journal publication. • Authors collaborating internationally have the highest publication rates and mean impact factors. • Among all modalities, PET-CT, MRI and CT have the highest publication percentages.

Abstract: For centuries, the research paper have been the main vehicle for scientific progress. From the paper, readers in the scientific community are expected to extract all the relevant information necessary to reproduce and validate the results presented by the paper''s authors. However, the increased use of computer software in science makes reproducing scientific results increasingly difficult. The research paper in its current state is no longer sufficient to fully reproduce, validate, or review a paper''s experimental results and conclusions. This impedes scientific progress. To remedy these concerns, we introduce PaperMâché, a new system for creating dynamic, executable research papers. The key novelty of PaperMâché is its use of virtual machines, which lets readers and reviewers easily view and interact with a paper, and reproduce key experimental results. For authors, the Paper Mâché workbench provides an easy-touse interface to build an executable paper. By transforming the static research paper into a dynamic and interactive entity, Paper Mâché brings the presentation of scientific results into the 21st century. We believe that Paper Mâché will become indispensable to the scientific process, and increase the visibility of key findings among members and non-members of the scientific community. MEDICAL periodicals , *CONFERENCES & conventions , *PLASTIC surgery , *PLASTIC surgeons ,ABSTRACTS - Abstract
Background The publication rate of presentations at medical international meetings has ranged from 11% to 78% with an average of 45%. To date, there are no studies about the final rate of publications at scientific meetings associated with plastic surgery from Korea. The present authors investigated the publication rate among the presentations at meetings associated with plastic surgery. Methods The titles and authors of the abstracts from oral and poster presentations were collected from the program books of the Congress of the Korean Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons (CKSPRS) for 2005 to 2007 (58th-63rd). All of the abstracts presented were searched for using PubMed, KoreaMed, KMbase, and Google Scholar. The titles, key words from the titles, and the authors' names were then entered in database programs. The parameters reviewed included the publication rate, type of presentation including running time, affiliation, subspecialty, time to publication, and publication journal. Results A total of 1,176 abstracts presented at the CKSPRS from 2005 to 2007 were evaluated. 38.7% of the abstracts, of which oral presentations accounted for 41.0% and poster presentations 34.8%, were published as full papers. The mean time to publication was 15.04 months. Among journals of publication, the Journal of the Korean Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons was most used. Conclusions Brilliant ideas and innovative approaches are being discussed at CKSPRS. The 38.7% publication rate found from this research appeared a bit lower than the average rate of medical meetings. If these valuable presentations are not available as full papers, the research would be a waste of time and effort. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

MANUSCRIPTS , *BIBLIOGRAPHY , *READING , *ACRONYMS , *PUBLICATIONS ,ABSTRACTS - Abstract
This section is placed at the beginning of a manuscript and must convey everything presented: what the research was about, where, why, and how it was conducted, and what it means relative to the current state of knowledge. It should consist of one paragraph of 250 or fewer words (i.e., no more than 3% of length of manuscript). Abstracts always are written in the past tense, thus, the best quality abstracts are written after the remainder of the manuscript is finished. Bibliographic services publish only the title and abstract of manuscripts. When conducting a literature search, researchers may read abstracts of perhaps 100 s of papers in which the titles possibly have bearing on an aspect of their work. Only if the content of the abstract seems relevant, will researchers progress to reading the article from which the abstract was derived. Therefore, great care must be used to write an abstract so it correctly reflects the contents of the manuscript in a precise and concise manner that can stand alone. Furthermore, it must contain no figures, tables, or references to them, or material not presented in the body of the manuscript; except for critique papers, no literature citations should be included. Also, it should not contain acronyms or jargon, even with definitions, not readily known to the general reading audience of the publication in which the manuscript will be published. Aim To evaluate the effectiveness and appropriateness of a course that promotes familiarity with biomedical periodicals and teaches efficient reading skills. Methods A 16-hour course was designed to help inexperienced readers gain confidence navigating the contents of a research paper (instead of reading only abstracts), and make the first steps to critical appraisal. The course consisted of short lessons and small group work in which research papers were read and presented to the class. Participants learned a method called "browsing" that guides the first, superficial reading of a research paper and substitutes abstract reading. The course was administered to 15 hospital physicians and 40 graduate students of molecular medicine, in 4 separate sessions. Results At course entry, 45 of 55 participants normally read the abstract before consulting the body of a research paper. An end-of-course questionnaire, completed by 47 participants, revealed that only 3 would still read the abstract first, while 33 would perform browsing, 7 would scan figures and tables, and 4 would consult another section of a paper outside of their research interests; similar responses were given for a research paper within their fields. For 43 participants, the course was effective in developing reading skills. On a final comprehension test, participants had a median score of 69% correct responses (interquartile range, 56%-80%). Conclusion This introductory course on reading scientific articles is effective in overcoming abstract-only reading and in developing confidence with the research literature. Considering participants' subjective evaluation and test scores, the course contents are appropriate for both physicians and young researchers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objectives: This study sought to ascertain the publication rate of abstracts presented at the annual meetings of the Medical Library Association (MLA) for the years of 2002 and 2003. The secondary objectives were to examine possible reasons for non-publication and factors influencing publication. Methods: A total of 442 abstracts from both meeting years, consisting of presented papers and posters, were examined. The 2 methods used to obtain a publication rate were literature searches and an online questionnaire sent to first authors. The questionnaire also asked abstract authors about reasons for non-publication and other factors that might have influenced their decisions about whether or not to submit the project for publication. Results: The overall publication rate from the survey was 26.5%, and the publication rate found via literature searching was 27.6%. The most common reason given for non-publication was time restrictions. Also notable was the large proportion of abstracts written by librarians working at universities and those having 25 or more years in the library profession. Discussion: Publication rates for abstracts presented at the Medical Library Association meetings for the years studied rank at the low end in comparison with other medical professional associations. Further research into factors affecting publication may reveal ways to increase this rate. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article presents summaries of papers on taxation that appears in the September 02, 2002 issue of "The Journal of the American Taxation Association." The paper "CEO Bonus Pay, Tax Policy, and Earnings Management," by Austin Reitenga, Steve Buchheit, Qin Jennifer Yin, and Terry Baker focuses on the U.S. Congress IRS Code Section 162(m) which limits the tax deductibility of nonperformance-based executive pay, with the objective of strengthening the tie between pay and performance and protecting shareholders from alleged "excessive" executive compensation. The paper "The Interrelationship Between Estimated Tax Payments and Taxpayer Compliance," by Glenn D. Feltham and Suzanne M. Paquette examines taxpayers' compliance behavior and the tax agency's audit decision in a broader, more realistic, setting. Whereas prior research has taken the taxpayer's prepayment position as exogenous, this study extends the literature by incorporating the estimated tax payment decision into a tax compliance game.

The article presents summaries of papers of Business History Seminar. The Business History Seminar organized by Dr. Oddy met on 8 May 1981 in the Board Room of the Polytechnic of Central London. Dr. Charles Munn's paper, "Bank Finance for Industry: Scotland and Ireland 1820-1850" was concerned with the volume and techniques of lending by Scottish and Irish joint-stock banks in their formative years compared with their predecessors. In the 1820s and 1830s long established banking systems in the two countries gave way to systems of joint-stock banks and the average site of bank was larger than the English equivalent. The changing structures in the banking systems had implications for the ways in which they did business. Larger advances led the banks to look for more tangible forms of security than the traditional personal guarantee. Lending on the security of shares, property, goods, life assurance policies and ships became common but the banks struggled long and hard to find ways of obtaining effective security over these items. Acceptance finance and lending by means of unsecured overdraft also became common at this time.

STUDY DESIGN:: Systematic review of abstracts of published papers presumed to contain information on chronic pain in persons with spinal cord injury (SCI). OBJECTIVES: To determine to what degree papers on SCI are abstracted in such a way that they can be retrieved, and evaluated as to the paper's applicability to a reader's questions. SETTING: US - academic department of rehabilitation medicine. METHODS: 868 abstracts published in Medline were independently examined by two out of 13 screeners, who answered four questions on the subjects and nature of the paper with 'Yes', 'No' or 'insufficient information'. Frequency of ratings 'insufficient information', and screener agreement were evaluated as affected by screener and abstract/paper characteristics. RESULTS:: Screeners could not determine whether the paper dealt with persons with traumatic SCI for 37% of abstracts; whether chronic pain was a topic could not be determined in 18%. Physicians were less willing than other disciplines to assign 'insufficient information'. Screener agreement was better than chance, but not at the level suggested for quality measurement. Screener discipline and task experience did not make a difference, nor did abstract length, structure, or decade of publication of the paper. CONCLUSION: Authors need to improve the quality of abstracts to make retrieval and screening of relevant papers more effective and efficient. ABSTRACTS ,TAX credits ,TAXATION ,TAX expenditures ,TAX laws ,PUBLIC finance - Abstract
This article presents summaries of various papers published in the March 1996 issue of "The Journal of the American Taxation Association." One of the papers examines the impact of three personal tax credits on the progressivity of the individual federal income tax during 1979-1988, using two progressivity indices and one income redistribution index. The objective of another paper is to identify and study the nature of horizontal inequities in the U.S. federal tax system that arise from the differential tax treatment of different types of income. In this paper, a taxpayer's ability to pay taxes is measured by expanded total income, an extension of Adjusted Gross Income that attempts to measure economic income. The Tax Reform Act of 1986 is the focus of another paper. The act increased the tax burden on the property and casualty insurance industry. This paper explores the extent to which that increase was borne by owners, consumers, and labor. The paper shows that single industry approach would be the most promising direction for future research into tax shifting.

50. REPORT OF THE COMMITTEE ON CONTRIBUTED PAPERS.
- Subjects
SOCIAL science research ,MIMEOGRAPH ,ABSTRACTS ,EMPIRICAL research ,SOCIAL structure ,INTERGROUP relations - Abstract
The Committee on Contributed Papers of American Sociological Society had major tasks to prepare a program for three regular sessions at each of which papers would be read their authors; and to prepare a program for two special sessions at which discussion of papers, based on mimeographed abstracts, would be facilitated. Nearly 100 papers or proposed papers were submitted to the committee, from which fifteen were selected to appear on the three regular sessions. The major criterion of selection was quality, but the committee frankly preferred papers dealing with recent empirical research by younger, lesser-known members of the Society. The fifteen papers were arranged into three patterns. Studies in social organization and change; studies in interpersonal and intergroup relations; and studies in methodology.
