Background/Aims: An adequate fruit and vegetable intake provides essential nutrients and nutritive compounds and is considered an important part of a healthy lifestyle. No simple instrument has been available for the assessment of fruit and vegetable intake as well as its determinants in school-aged children applicable in different European countries. Within the Pro Children Project, such an instrument has been developed. This paper describes the cross-sectional survey in 11-year-olds in 9 countries. Methods: The cross-sectional survey used nationally, and in 2 countries regionally, representative samples of schools and classes. The questionnaires, including a precoded 24-hour recall component and a food frequency part, were completed in the classroom. Data were treated using common syntax files for portion sizes and for merging of vegetable types into four subgroups. Results: The results show that the fruit and vegetable intake in amounts and choice were highly diverse in the 9 participating countries. Vegetable intake was in general lower than fruit intake, boys consumed less fruit and vegetables than girls did. The highest total intake according to the 24-hour recall was found in Austria and Portugal, the lowest in Spain and Iceland. Conclusion: The fruit and vegetable intake in 11-year-old children was in all countries far from reaching population goals and food-based dietary guidelines on national and international levels. In the context of the global childhood obesity, it is essential to monitor the nutrition value of commercial foods. A cross-sectional study (November 2018 to April 2019) aimed to evaluate the nutritional adequacy of processed/ultra-processed food products targeted at 0–36-month-old children in Portugal and in Brazil. The nutrient profiling model developed by the Pan American Health Organization was used. A total of food 171 products were assessed (123 in Portugal and forty eight in Brazil). From the fifteen available meat- or fish-based meals in Brazil, 60 % exceeded the amount of Na and 100 % exceeded the target for total fat. Given the lack of specification of sugars within carbohydrates in the label of the foods in Brazil, it was not possible to calculate free sugars. In Portugal, from the seventeen fruit and vegetable purees and the six juice/smoothie/tea/drinks available, 82 % and 67 %, respectively, surpassed the level of free sugar, while total and saturated fat was excessive in all yogurt and yogurt-related products (n 21), 40 % of biscuit/wafer/crisps (two out of five) and 13 % meat- or fish-based meals (two out of sixteen). Objective: Describe the process of development and implementation of Health at the Table – a food literacy curriculum for primary school aged children. Design: Through a community-based research process, Health at the Table development and implementation took place in four stages: exploratory study, production, implementation and monitoring. Setting: Primary schools of Sintra's municipality, Portugal. Participants: Children (6–10 years), teachers, school staff and children's legal guardians of three primary schools during the pilot project and eight primary schools in the second year. Results: During the needs assessment phase, 99·1 % (n 341) of the children's legal guardians, 100 % (n 34) of the teachers and 100 % (n 19) of the school staff considered that the school plays an important or very important role in children's food literacy (stage 1). During the pilot project, a manual with sixty session plans was developed (stage 2). In the second year, Health at the Table was implemented by seventy-two trained teachers during one school year (stage 3). Most of the teachers agreed that the curriculum was appropriate (69·2 %) and that children developed health, wellness/well-being and environmental skills (83·1 %). Most of the children said they had learned about healthy eating (86·3 %) and claimed to eat healthier since the Health at the Table implementation (58·9 %) (stage 4). Conclusions: Health at the Table is a food literacy curriculum that can be reproduced in similar contexts in a sustainable way. Introduction: Exclusive enteral nutrition (EEN) is recommended as first line therapy for mild to moderate Crohn's disease (CD) to induce remission in pediatric patients. It involves the use of a whole protein formula given exclusively for six to eight weeks. Aims: To report the preliminary experience of a tertiary care center in Portugal, concerning the efficacy and tolerance of EEN in pediatric patients with CD. Materials and methods: Retrospective descriptive study of pediatric CD patients who received EEN as induction of remission therapy between January/2014 and June/2019. Clinical and laboratory parameters were assessed, including clinical disease activity and nutritional status before and immediately after treatment. Results: In the study period, 37 patients were diagnosed with CD; 19 were included in the study, 17/19 (89.5%) completed the EEN therapy and 16/17 (94%) achieved clinical remission. Ten patients were male, with a median (IQR) age of 14.2 years (11.8; 16.7 years). The majority of the patients had ileocolonic disease (47.4%) or ileocecal disease (42.1%) and an inflammatory behavior (78.9%). None of the patients had growth delay at diagnosis. All patients received EEN orally for six to eight weeks, 18 used polymeric formulas and one used an elemental formula. Comparing data at baseline and after treatment, significant improvements were observed in BMI Z-score (p=0.002), PCDAI score (p<0.001), erythrocyte sedimentation rate (p=0.002), C-reactive protein (p=0.003), faecal calprotectin concentration (p=0.036), and serum albumin (p=0.020). No side effects were noticed. Discussion/Conclusion: In this series, EEN therapy was associated to significant improvement of disease activity index, nutritional status, weight gain and decreased markers of inflammation in most patients. Our data are in accordance with previous observations that EEN is an effective and well tolerated treatment for the induction of remission in pediatric patients with CD. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A Short Message Service programme was adapted to monitor three health behaviours and provide supportive feedback. The study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of the programme to increase fruit/vegetable consumption and physical activity and to decrease screen time. A total of 139 Portuguese children, aged 8–10 years, grouped by classroom, were randomly assigned to an intervention (8 weeks of monitoring/feedback) or a control condition. Participants had their key behaviours assessed at baseline, post-intervention and follow-up. A three-level hierarchical linear model was developed. Results showed that the monitoring and feedback programme significantly increased fruit and vegetable consumption over time. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
