With the increase in the scale of breeding at modern pastures, the management of dairy cows has become much more challenging, and individual recognition is the key to the implementation of precision farming. Based on the need for low-cost and accurate herd management and for non-stressful and non-invasive individual recognition, we propose a vision-based automatic recognition method for dairy cow ear tags. Firstly, for the detection of cow ear tags, the lightweight Small-YOLOV5s is proposed, and then a differentiable binarization network (DBNet) combined with a convolutional recurrent neural network (CRNN) is used to achieve the recognition of the numbers on ear tags. The experimental results demonstrated notable improvements: Compared to those of YOLOV5s, Small-YOLOV5s enhanced recall by 1.5%, increased the mean average precision by 0.9%, reduced the number of model parameters by 5,447,802, and enhanced the average prediction speed for a single image by 0.5 ms. The final accuracy of the ear tag number recognition was an impressive 92.1%. Moreover, this study introduces two standardized experimental datasets specifically designed for the ear tag detection and recognition of dairy cows. These datasets will be made freely available to researchers in the global dairy cattle community with the intention of fostering intelligent advancements in the breeding industry. Highlights: This review discusses the potential of degradable metallic micromotors for a variety of biomedical and environmental applications. The design principles, fabrication techniques and degradation mechanisms of degradable metallic micromotors are reviewed in detail. Challenges and future directions for the development of degradable metallic micromotors for real-life applications are presented. Synthetic micromotor has gained substantial attention in biomedicine and environmental remediation. Metal-based degradable micromotor composed of magnesium (Mg), zinc (Zn), and iron (Fe) have promise due to their nontoxic fuel-free propulsion, favorable biocompatibility, and safe excretion of degradation products Recent advances in degradable metallic micromotor have shown their fast movement in complex biological media, efficient cargo delivery and favorable biocompatibility. A noteworthy number of degradable metal-based micromotors employ bubble propulsion, utilizing water as fuel to generate hydrogen bubbles. This novel feature has projected degradable metallic micromotors for active in vivo drug delivery applications. In addition, understanding the degradation mechanism of these micromotors is also a key parameter for their design and performance. Its propulsion efficiency and life span govern the overall performance of a degradable metallic micromotor. Here we review the design and recent advancements of metallic degradable micromotors. Furthermore, we describe the controlled degradation, efficient in vivo drug delivery, and built-in acid neutralization capabilities of degradable micromotors with versatile biomedical applications. Moreover, we discuss micromotors' efficacy in detecting and destroying environmental pollutants. Finally, we address the limitations and future research directions of degradable metallic micromotors. The last two decades have witnessed the emergence of micro‐ and nanoswimmers (MNSs). Researchers have invested significant efforts in engineering motile micro‐ and nanodevices to address current limitations in minimally invasive medicine. MNSs can move through complex fluid media by using chemical fuels or external energy sources such as magnetic fields, ultrasound, or light. Despite significant advancements in their locomotion and functionalities, the gradual deterioration of MNSs in human physiological media is often overlooked. Corrosion and biodegradation caused by chemical reactions with surrounding medium and the activity of biological agents can significantly affect their chemical stability and functional properties during their lifetime performance. It is therefore essential to understand the degradation mechanisms and factors that influence them to design ideal biomedical MNSs that are affordable, highly efficient, and sufficiently resistant to degradation (at least during their service time). This review summarizes recent studies that delve into the physicochemical characteristics and complex environmental factors affecting the corrosion and biodegradation of MNSs, with a focus on metal‐based devices. Additionally, different strategies are discussed to enhance and/or optimize their stability. Conversely, controlled degradation of non‐toxic MNSs can be highly advantageous for numerous biomedical applications, allowing for less invasive, safer, and more efficient treatments. Chemically driven micromotors display unpredictable trajectories due to the rotational Brownian motion interacting with the surrounding fluid molecules. This hampers the practical applications of these tiny robots, particularly where precise control is a requisite. To overcome the rotational Brownian motion and increase motion directionality, robots are often decorated with a magnetic composition and guided by an external magnetic field. However, despite the straightforward method, explicit analysis and modeling of their motion have been limited. Here, catalytic Janus micromotors are fabricated with distinct magnetizations and a controlled self‐propelled motion with magnetic steering is shown. To analyze their dynamic behavior, a dynamic model that can successfully predict the trajectory of micromotors in uniform viscous flows in real time by incorporating a form of state‐dependent‐coefficient with a robust two‐stage Kalman filter is theoretically developed. A good agreement is observed between the theoretically predicted dynamics and experimental observations over a wide range of model parameter variations. The developed model can be universally adopted to various designs of catalytic micro‐/nanomotors with different sizes, geometries, and materials, even in diverse fuel solutions. Finally, the proposed model can be used as a platform for biosensing, detecting fuel concentration, or determining small‐scale motors' propulsion mechanisms in an unknown environment. Inspired by the movement of bacteria and other microorganisms, researchers have developed artificial helical micro‐ and nanorobots that can perform corkscrew locomotion or helical path swimming under external energy actuation. In this paper, for the first time the locomotion of nonhelical multifunctional nanorobots that can swim in helical klinotactic trajectories, similarly to rod‐shaped bacteria, under rotating magnetic fields is investigated. These nanorobots consist of a rigid ferromagnetic nickel head connected to a rhodium tail by a flexible hydrogel‐based hollow hinge composed of chemically responsive chitosan and alginate multilayers. This design allows nanoswimmers switching between different dynamic behaviors—from in‐plane tumbling to helical klinotactic swimming—by varying the rotating magnetic field frequency and strength. It also adds a rich spectrum of swimming capabilities that can be adjusted by varying the type of applied magnetic fields and/or frequencies. A theoretical model is developed to analyze the propulsion mechanisms and predict the swimming behavior at distinct rotating magnetic frequencies. The model shows good agreement with the experimental results. Additionally, the biomedical capabilities of the nanoswimmers as drug delivery platforms are demonstrated. Increasing accumulation of highly persistent and non-biodegradable organic pollutants in our fresh water sources imposes a threat to human health. Designing novel catalytic materials that can efficiently harness energy from their surroundings to degrade such problematic pollutants is essential. In this work, we fabricated core–shell microhelical robots composed of iron oxide@titanium dioxide (Fe3O4@TiO2) for UV-visible light driven degradation of organic pollutants in a cost-effective manner. Bio-templating and sol–gel synthesis were employed for a simplified approach to batch-fabricate magnetic photocatalysts. These hybrid microrobots removed 97% of RhB dye from contaminated water in 75 minutes using UV-visible light (k-value of 0.047 min−1). Furthermore, when photocatalytic degradation was performed under continuous magnetic field driven propulsion, 99% of RhB dye degraded in 40 minutes with a k-value of 0.108 min−1. We also observed a strong correlation between the hybrid microhelices' swimming characteristics and their subsequent photocatalytic degradation efficiency. In this work, we have developed 3D hybrid microstructures consisting of a short ferromagnetic CoNi segment for wireless magnetic control, coupled to a photocatalytic Bi2O3/BiOCl segment for water remediation under UV-visible light. These hybrid microstructures (pillars and helices) were fabricated using 3D photolithography and template-assisted electrodeposition, followed by in situ creation of a Bi2O3/BiOCl heterojunction after oxidation of Bi. This heterojunction is not only active under a wider solar spectrum but also ensures sufficient charge separation and hence low electron–hole recombination rate. As a result, these hybrid microstructures were able to degrade rhodamine B dye with a 90% efficiency in 6 hours. On application of magnetic fields we were able to precisely control the structures and collect them for reuse. Cytotoxicity tests were performed on our hybrid structures and a 95% cell viability was reported showing that our structures are biocompatible. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The development of 3D soft‐robotic components is currently hindered by material limitations associated with conventional 3D printing techniques. To overcome this challenge, an indirect 3D printing approach based on the fabrication of 3D printed sacrificial templates is proposed. High‐resolution micromolds produced by direct laser writing are infused with polymers and then dissolved, leading to the final 3D printed soft microstructures. This method is used to indirectly print 3D and 4D soft microrobots. The versatility of this technique is shown through the fabrication and actuation of gelatin helices filled with magnetic nanoparticles. In addition, it is shown that stent‐like microstructures with shape memory properties can be manufactured with minimum features of 5 µm, which is 40 times smaller than those reported to date. Poly(vinylidenefluoride-trifluoroethylene-chlorofluoroethylene) (P(VDF-TrFE-CFE)) is a ferroelectric terpolymer relaxor with a static dielectric constant of 50, which was developed using defect modification to eliminate remnant polarization in the normal ferroelectric PVDF. In this work, this solution processable terpolymer was used as the gate insulator in bottom gated organic thin-film transistors with a pentacene semiconductor layer. Due to the high dielectric constant of P(VDF-TrFE-CFE), a large capacitive coupling between the gate and channel can be achieved which causes a high charge concentration at the interface of the semiconductor and dielectric layers. We present directly measured electrocaloric effect (ECE) from the poly(vinylidenefluoride-trifluoroethylene) 65/35 mol. % copolymer. The data reveal a large difference in the ECE between that measured in applying and in removing the electric field. The difference is significantly reduced by modifying the copolymer with 20 Mrad of high energy electron irradiation. Moreover, an isothermal entropy change ΔSint = 160 J kg-1 K-1 and an adiabatic temperature change ΔTint = 35 °C can be induced in the irradiated copolymer. These results demonstrate the promise of achieving a significant ECE in ferroelectric polymers near first-order ferroelectric-paraelectric transition where multiple intermediate phases can exist. Miniaturized reconstructive spectrometers play a pivotal role in on-chip and portable devices, offering high-resolution spectral measurement through precalibrated spectral responses and AI-driven reconstruction. However, two key challenges persist for practical applications: artificial intervention in algorithm parameters and compatibility with complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) manufacturing. We present a cutting-edge miniaturized reconstructive spectrometer that incorporates a self-adaptive algorithm referenced with Fabry-Perot resonators, delivering precise spectral tests across the visible range. The spectrometers are fabricated with CMOS technology at the wafer scale, achieving a resolution of ~2.5 nm, an average wavelength deviation of ~0.27 nm, and a resolution-to-bandwidth ratio of ~0.46%. Magnetic helical microswimmers, also known as artificial bacterial flagella (ABFs), perform 3D navigation in various liquids under low-strength rotating magnetic fields by converting rotational motion to translational motion. ABFs have been widely studied as carriers for targeted delivery and release of drugs and cells. For in vivo/ in vitro therapeutic applications, control over individual groups of swimmers within a swarm is necessary for several biomedical applications such as drug delivery or small-scale surgery. In this work, we present the selective control of individual swimmers in a swarm of geometrically and magnetically identical ABFs by modifying their surface chemistry. We confirm experimentally and analytically that the forward/rotational velocity ratio of ABFs is independent of their surface coatings when the swimmers are operated below their step-out frequency (the frequency requiring the entire available magnetic torque to maintain synchronous rotation). We also show that ABFs with hydrophobic surfaces exhibit larger step-out frequencies and higher maximum forward velocities compared to their hydrophilic counterparts. Thus, selective control of a group of swimmers within a swarm of ABFs can be achieved by operating the selected ABFs at a frequency that is below their step-out frequencies but higher than the step-out frequencies of unselected ABFs. The feasibility of this method is investigated in water and in biologically relevant solutions. Selective control is also demonstrated inside a Y-shaped microfluidic channel. Our results present a systematic approach for realizing selective control within a swarm of magnetic helical microswimmers.

We report Au/Ru core-shell nanowire motors. These nanowires are fabricated using our previously developed electrodeposition-based technique, and their catalytic locomotion in the presence of H 2 O 2 is investigated. Unlike conventional bimetallic nanowires that are self-electroosmotically propelled, our open-ended Au/Ru core-shell nanowires show both a noticeable decrease in rotational diffusivity and increase in motor speed with increasing nanowire length. Numerical modeling based on self-electroosmosis attributes decreases in rotational diffusivity to the formation of toroidal vortices at the nanowire tail, but fails to explain the speed increase with length. To reconcile this inconsistency, we propose a combined mechanism of self-diffusiophoresis and electroosmosis based on the oxygen gradient produced by catalytic shells. This mechanism successfully explains not only the speed increase of Au/Ru core-shell nanomotors with increasing length, but also the large variation in speed among Au/Ru, Au/Rh, and Rh/Au core-shell nanomotors. The possible contribution of diffusiophoresis to an otherwise well-established electroosmotic mechanism sheds light on future designs of nanomotors, at the same time highlighting the complex nature of nanoscale propulsion.

In this paper, we report on the synthesis of FeCo/Cu multisegmented nanowires by means of pulse electrodeposition in nanoporous anodic aluminum oxide arrays supported on silicon chips. By adjustment of the electrodeposition conditions, such as the pulse scheme and the electrolyte, alternating segments of Cu and ferromagnetic FeCo alloy can be fabricated. The segments can be built with a wide range of lengths (15-150 nm) and exhibit a close-to-pure composition (Cu or FeCo alloy) as suggested by energy-dispersive X-ray mapping results. The morphology and the crystallographic structure of different nanowire configurations have been assessed thoroughly, concluding that Fe, Co, and Cu form solid solution. Magnetic characterization using vibrating sample magnetometry and magnetic force microscopy reveals that by introduction of nonmagnetic Cu segments within the nanowire architecture, the magnetic easy axis can be modified and the reduced remanence can be tuned to the desired values. The experimental results are in agreement with the provided simulations. Furthermore, the influence of nanowire magnetic architecture on the magnetically triggered protein desorption is evaluated for three types of nanowires: Cu, FeCo, and multisegmented FeCo15nm/Cu15nm. The application of an external magnetic field can be used to enhance the release of proteins on demand. For fully magnetic FeCo nanowires the applied oscillating field increased protein release by 83%, whereas this was found to be 45% for multisegmented FeCo15nm/Cu15nm nanowires. Our work suggests that a combination of arrays of nanowires with different magnetic configurations could be used to generate complex substance concentration gradients or control delivery of multiple drugs and macromolecules.

Electrodeposition is a versatile method, which enables the fabrication of a variety of wire-like nanoarchitectures such as nanowires, nanorods, and nanotubes. By means of template-assisted electrodeposition, segmented Au/Co/Au nanowires are grown in anodic aluminum oxide templates from two different electrolytes. To tailor the properties of the cobalt segments, several electrochemical conditions are studied as a function of current density, pulse deposition, and pH. The morphology, crystal structure, and magnetic properties are accordingly investigated. Changes in the deposition conditions affect the cobalt electrocrystallization process directly. Cobalt tends to crystallize mainly in the hexagonal close-packed structure, which is the reason cobalt might not accommodate satisfactorily on the face-centered cubic Au surface or vice versa. We demonstrate that by modifying the electrolyte and the applied current densities, changes in the texture and the crystalline structure of cobalt lead to a good quality connection between dissimilar segments. In particular, lowering the bath pH, or using pulse plating at a high overpotential, produces polycrystalline fcc Co and thus well-connected Co/Au bimetallic junctions with smooth interface. These are crucial factors to be carefully considered taking into account that nanowires are potential building blocks in micro- and nanoelectromechanical systems.
