Este estudo discute a utilização de métricas de análise espacial em ambiente de Sistemas de Informação Geográficas (SIG) aplicadas a dados do censo populacional do Instituto Brasileiro de Geografia e Estatística (IBGE) dos anos de 2000 e 2010 para entender a complexa e multifacetada mobilidade espacial em Santa Catarina. Para isso, foram usados dados quantitativos coletados nas diferentes regiões administrativas do estado de SC. O fenômeno, observado em vários países, envolve o adensamento populacional em regiões metropolitanas, motivado pela busca por melhores condições de vida e catalisado pelo êxodo rural devido ao avanço tecnológico na agricultura e ao emprego de mão de obra temporária. Tal movimento, geralmente originado em municípios menores em direção a maiores, tem consequências significativas para a dinâmica econômica, social e ambiental dos locais envolvidos, afetando diretamente a qualidade de vida dos indivíduos. Os municípios de São Pedro de Alcântara, Ituporanga, Campo Alegre e Bom Retiro, neste período de 10 anos, apresentaram êxodo rural considerável, com uma queda da população de -34,48%, -5,24%, -5,29% e -4,03% respetivamente, enquanto o aumento da população urbana ocorreu nas regiões do Norte Catarinense, Vale do Itajaí e Grande Florianópolis, com destaque nos seguintes municípios: Massaranduba, Garopaba, Guabiruba, Tijucas, Florianópolis, Blumenau e Joinville, com 64,31%, 42,88%, 41,65%, 38,97%, 22,01%, 21,84% e 19,97%, respetivamente. Estas informações são de utilidade para gestores públicos na definição de meios para viabilizar recursos, infraestrutura e serviços, dada a demanda de moradia, saneamento, educação, saúde entre outros.

This article approaches related current tendencies with the demographic changes and their significant effects in the population worldwide aging, with a particular focus about the context of Cuba and Mayabeque. The purpose of this research is to systematize the theoretical and methodological foundations of gerontological and Gerontagogical knowledge management through continuous education in Higher Education. The study identifies the growing need for learning among professionals throughout their educational processes, both at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels, with the aim of acquiring knowledge, skills, and values that enhance communicative competencies in academic, research, and professional contexts. This, in turn, enables professionals to make an impactful intervention as social actors, facilitating the active and inclusive participation of all citizens in the sustainable transformations and demands inherent in aged society. The theoretical and methodological contributions of this study represent a scientific novelty and an updated approach to the conception of gerontological and gerontagogical knowledge management declared. The article examines the 1918-1920 excess mortality data from Spanish flu epidemic in Florence, Italy. Two local documentary sources (the statistical abstracts published by the town administration and the admission registers of the Florence main hospital) provide empirical evidence for a revision of the national mortality data. The Italian case-study shows a pronounced excess mortality among women, as it happened even in England and India. Specific social and epidemiological explanations are debated. The Spanish flu was not socially-neutral; it did not change the traditional nexus between economic poverty and sanitary vulnerability. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Concerning the demographic issue we have gone from alarmist statements from those who feared a non-controlled population overflowing, to a more realistic and scientifically founded view, based on the extension of the demographic transition to the whole world. Even if the population continues to grow, because of a still young age structure, United Nations population prospects estimate the moment when it will reach a maximum at about the 2080 decade. The most remarkable result of this process is an enormous change in the geographical distribution of people, with the center of gravity heading to the african continent. Maintaining a rural-urban balance is absolutely necessary in the context of the challenges related to food security and environmental protection as well as the perspectives of urban agglomeration. This paper highlighted the impact of the main events from the last 30 years on the rural population. This study used the vector autoregressive model (VAR) to investigate the estimates and analyse the dynamic impact of innovations on the system of variables. Key issues that influenced certain periods in the analyzed interval were highlighted, which clearly show the impact on the analyzed variables using variance decomposition. The cost of living in rural areas is increasing, so more and more inhabitants give up growing certain crops or raising certain animals, thus having to search for food to survive, leading to additional wage income to cover these costs. Introdução: O câncer é uma das principais causas de óbito em todo mundo. Diferenças socioeconômicas e ambientais refletem nas taxas de mortalidade entre diferentes Regiões. Objetivo: Caracterizar e descrever o perfil da população que foi a óbito por neoplasias em Ribeirão Preto/SP, segundo sexo, raça/cor, faixa etária e local de residência (2019-2020) e estabelecer uma relação com óbitos por covid-19 em 2020. Método: Estudo transversal, observacional, com análise de dados de declarações de óbito por algum tipo de neoplasia como causa básica e cálculos de frequências absolutas e relativas do perfil populacional de óbitos, coeficientes de mortalidade, e agrupamentos por sistemas, segundo a CID-10. Identificaram-se os óbitos com características econômicas das Regiões do município, e os mapas com as principais causas foram elaborados, relacionando-os com a condição econômica, segundo dados do IBGE, além da taxa padronizada de mortalidade. Resultados: Ocorreram 1.766 óbitos, com predomínio da faixa etária de 61-80 anos (52,8%). Houve crescimento de 19,4% em 2020. As neoplasias mais prevalentes foram no sistema digestivo (33,7%), porém o pulmão foi o órgão mais acometido (14,4%). Do total, 8,9% dos óbitos estiveram associados à infecção pela covid-19. O Centro apresentou maior coeficiente de mortalidade (2,5/mil habitantes), contudo a Zona Norte mostrou maior taxa padronizada de mortalidade (27,9/mil habitantes). O estudo sugere que houve distribuição heterogênea pelo município, com vulnerabilidades como renda, que contribuiu com o desfecho analisado. Conclusão: É importante considerar a disparidade socioeconômica-espacial de Ribeirão Preto na criação e aplicação de programas de prevenção, rastreio e tratamento de neoplasias na população.

Introdução: Uma das principais abordagens para o tratamento do câncer é a radioterapia, que pode causar consequências irreversíveis no indivíduo. Por meio da teoria das representações sociais (TRS), os profissionais conseguem identificar e intervir nas adversidades, proporcionando qualidade de vida ao paciente. Objetivo: Identificar e analisar a estrutura das representações sociais das pessoas vivendo com câncer frente à radioterapia. Método: Estudo descritivo, com abordagem qualitativa, fundamentado na TRS. A pesquisa com 111 participantes foi conduzida em um hospital de referência em tratamento oncológico, no Rio de Janeiro. A coleta de dados ocorreu durante o período de outubro a dezembro de 2019 por um questionário sociodemográfico e pela técnica de evocação livre ao termo indutor “radioterapia”, sendo a análise por meio dos softwares Microsoft Excel e IRaMuTeQ. Resultados: As evocações que compõem o provável núcleo central são: “queima”, seguida pelos termos “tratamento”, “agressiva”, “ruim” e “luz”. O elemento “queima” representa um efeito colateral comum na pele, a radiodermatite. O termo “tratamento” corresponde à maneira de combater a doença. A díade “agressiva” e “ruim” pode estar associada aos efeitos colaterais gerados e “luz”, à exposição à luz que recebem durante a irradiação. Conclusão: A pesquisa mostra os possíveis efeitos colaterais da radioterapia e os elementos atrelados e, com isso, evidencia a relevância de uma abordagem integral do indivíduo, promovendo um cuidado individualizado.

Este trabalho tem por objetivo estudar a demografia da cidade do Porto na década de 1520. A fonte utilizada é primordialmente “O Livro da Abertura da Rua das Flores” (de 1521-1527), que divide os habitantes em diversas categorias fiscais e por circunscrições; iremos assim quantificar os habitantes de acordo com essas categorizações, detetando disparidades de riqueza nas diferentes partes da cidade, o peso da finta para o orçamento doméstico e finalmente calcular o crescimento da população desde 1438. Introdução: O câncer de mama (CM) é o mais comum entre as mulheres. A quimioterapia neoadjuvante (QTNEO) visa melhorar as condições cirúrgicas em pacientes com CM localmente avançado. Objetivo: Comparar as características demográficas, clínicas e de tratamento de mulheres submetidas à QTNEO para tratamento de CM de acordo com a linfadenectomia axilar (LA) ou biópsia de linfonodo sentinela (BLS) e analisar os fatores associados à indicação de BLS em um cenário da vida real. Método: Estudo de coorte retrospectivo em mulheres com CM e indicação de QTNEO. Foram obtidas variáveis demográficas, clínicas, tumorais e de tratamento. Foi realizada regressão logística simples e múltipla para avaliar os fatores independentes associados à indicação de BLS. Resultados: Foram incluídas 918 pacientes, das quais 17,5% foram submetidas à BLS e 11,4% à BLS seguida de LA. As mulheres em estádio III tiveram 95% menos probabilidade de serem submetidas à BLS (OR = 0,05; IC 95%: 0,01-0,17; p < 0,001) em comparação com aquelas no estádio I. As submetidas à mastectomia apresentaram 90% menor chance de realizar BLS do que aquelas com cirurgia conservadora (IC95%: 0,06-0,17; p < 0,001). Considerando as respostas da QTNEO, os casos sem resposta ou com progressão da doença apresentaram chance 55% menor de serem submetidos à BLS em comparação às que apresentaram resposta total (OR = 0,45; IC 95%: 0,24-0,82; p = 0,009). Conclusão: A BLS foi realizada em 29% das pacientes após QTNEO. Pacientes que apresentavam estágio clínico mais avançado da doença e pior resposta à QTNEO e as que foram submetidas a mastectomias tiveram menor probabilidade de serem submetidas à BLS.

Entrevista realizada em outubro de 2023 com Aurélia Hermínia Castiglioni, professora do Programa de Pós-graduação em Geografia da Universidade Federal do Espírito Santo. O objetivo foi conhecer a sua trajetória pessoal e profissional, descrevendo as suas contribuições em diferentes frentes de trabalho, além de apresentar o seu olhar sobre temas e perspectivas futuras de trabalho relacionados a Geografia e Demografia.

Este artículo estudia cómo la Carrera de Campeche, una serie de rutas de tráfico y movilidad fluviales y terrestres, conectó la ciudad portuaria de Campeche y el golfo de México con la Carrera de Guatemala, el circuito comercial que vinculó las audiencias/reinos de Nueva España y Guatemala. Para ello, se hizo una revisión de la historiografía regional, económica y de los estudios antropológicos; asimismo, se examinaron documentos de archivo y cartografía recabada en México, Guatemala, Estados Unidos y España, para sustentar la hipótesis de la existencia de las rutas. Como resultado, se corroboró la existencia de una demografía dinámica y en continuo movimiento, fortificada por devociones regionales que afianzaron la integración religioso cultural y que permitió sustentar los proyectos de caminería de magistrados y élites en la Carrera de Campeche, al término del período colonial español.

Niniejsze opracowanie poświęcone jest problematyce osób starszych w kontekście planowania i zagospodarowania przestrzennego gminy. Ważnym elementem polityki senioralnej powinny być odpowiednie rozwiązania dotyczące planowania i zagospodarowania przestrzennego. Nie ulega wątpliwości, że w różnych dokumentach planistycznych konieczne jest przyjmowanie regulacji uwzględniających potrzeby osób starszych, zwłaszcza osób o ograniczonej sprawności. Szczególnie istotne jest wdrażanie odpowiednich rozwiązań zapewniających dostęp osobom starszym do przestrzeni publicznej. Przyjmowane regulacje powinny uwzględniać wymagania dotyczące mobilności osób starszych, ułatwiać dostęp do terenów rekreacyjnych i miejsc wypoczynku, muzeów, bibliotek i innych instytucji kultury.

The study undertakes a spatial analysis of the total fertility rate in Hungary. The authors examine the dynamics of the indicator, its basic spatial distribution, and the differences between the periods. They show the districts where the total fertility rate significantly differs from the values of the neighbouring regions. Theoretically, the fertility data of each district should be similar to the values of the neighbouring districts - based on Waldo Tobler's (1970) „First Law of Geography". Where this is not the case, the most important fault lines can be observed. The analysis, presents the spatial pattern deter mined by the total fertility rate using two different spatial statistical methods. Finally, with the help of a spatial econometric model, the authors explain the spatial distribution of the total fertility rate, and present findings that are perhaps worthy of consideration. The article describes the progress of the demographic transition in rural areas of Latin America and its impact on the dynamics of family farming in the continent, highlighting the presence of this issue from the contribution of Chayanov. It then evaluates the relationship between demographic dynamics and the topics of debate that appear in the literature on family farming, in particular the characteristics of the "new rurality", the issue of gender and the empowerment of women and the issue of intergenerational transfer of productive units. The implementation of technology in production processes begins to be analyzed at the beginning of the 20th century. It is currently called the IV Industrial Revolution or Industry 4.0. In December 2019 the coronavirus changed the future of humanity. In less than three months, practically all of humanity was confined, this new reality caused the acceleration of the development of the IV Industrial Revolution, the digitization of processes. But it has also increased the positions against this process. This article analyzes how both contexts affect social evolution. Manuel Plana analyses The Routledge History of Modern Latin American Migration, a volume that introduces the migratory trajectories of Latin American populations as a complex of transnational movements linking origin, transit and receiving countries over the last 150 years. Introdução: Embora seja causa importante de óbitos por neoplasia no Brasil, o perfil de sobrevida dos pacientes com melanoma cutâneo primário em locais considerados de baixa incidência necessita de descrição mais recente. Objetivo: Descrever o perfil de sobrevida do paciente com melanoma cutâneo primário na cidade de Goiânia entre os anos de 2003 e 2016. Método: Estudo de base populacional realizado com dados do Registro de Câncer de Base Populacional de Goiânia (RCBP-GO). Foram incluídos casos novos de melanoma cutâneo diagnosticados no período. Os dados foram coletados e analisados segundo sexo, faixa etária, cor da pele, profissão, CID-10, data do diagnóstico, status vital, localização da lesão primária, metástase e tipo histológico. A análise estatística foi realizada com o pacote SPSS. A distribuição segundo o status vital foi testada pelo teste qui-quadrado. As curvas de sobrevida foram realizadas e testadas por meio do teste de log rank. O nível de significância adotado foi de 5%. Resultados: Foram registrados 653 novos casos de melanoma cutâneo em Goiânia no período. Os fatores relacionados à menor sobrevida dos pacientes foram: sexo masculino, idade igual ou superior a 60 anos, cor parda, atividades externas e metástase. Conclusão: O perfil de sobrevida encontrado reforça a necessidade de estratégias que incentivem homens de cor parda com idade superior a 60 anos a realizarem o diagnóstico precoce.

Resumo Fundamento: As disparidades nos resultados de saúde entre grupos raciais merecem investigação, mesmo em atletas de elite. Portanto, compreender o impacto da raça na sobrevida pós-medalha em atletas olímpicos brasileiros torna-se essencial. Objetivo: Comparar a sobrevida pós-medalha entre medalhistas olímpicos brasileiros brancos e não brancos de 1920 a 1992. Métodos: Utilizamos dados disponíveis publicamente para um estudo de coorte retrospectivo de todos os medalhistas olímpicos brasileiros de 1920 a 1992 (somente homens). Os atletas foram classificados nos grupos brancos e não brancos usando determinação estruturada de etnia. As análises de Kaplan-Meier calcularam o tempo médio de sobrevida restrito (TMSR) para cada grupo étnico. En este estudio, presentamos un peculiar acercamiento a la historia cotidiana de la ciudad y puerto de Veracruz. Lo hemos intentado hacer a través de tres importantes temas. El primero, haciendo una breve historia de sus fundaciones, desde la primera ubicación creada por Hernán Cortés en 1519 hasta su asentamiento definitivo en 1597. El segundo, realizando una aproximación a la población que tuvo durante la segunda mitad del siglo XVI y primera del XVII. Y, finalmente, el tercero, exponiendo los diferentes conflictos que las flotas de la Carrera de Indias produjeron y los precios de los alimentos básicos. La importancia que Veracruz tuvo en el sistema monopolístico castellano, como puerto de intercambio entre Europa y el Caribe, no se verá reflejada en el desarrollo de la ciudad. Su ubicación, su población y su economía siempre estuvieron condicionadas por la temporalidad de las flotas.

A mediados del siglo XIX los salubristas británicos vieron la dificultad de hacer comparaciones entre la mortalidad de las diferentes regiones de Inglaterra y Gales. Algunos lugares, como el sur de la isla, concentraban a muchos pensionados que buscaban un clima más agradable para su retiro. Su población envejecida tenía, por razones obvias, una elevada tasa de mortalidad en comparación con los centros urbanos como Londres, Manchester o Liverpool, o con las zonas agrícolas del norte, que contaban con una población mucho más joven. Por esos días, en 1842, el reformista inglés Edwin Chadwick (1800-1890), alarmado por la situación de la clase trabajadora empobrecida en medio de la Revolución Industrial en plena época victoriana de Imperio británico, había publicado The Sanitary Condition of the Labouring Population, y había propuesto un primer estándar que permitiera algún ajuste al comparar poblaciones; su propuesta fue tomar la media de la edad al morir. Sin embargo, fue al actuario escocés Francis Neison a quien se le ocurrió lo que sería reconocido como el “método directo” para hacer comparaciones, no solo de la mortalidad sino luego de la incidencia o la prevalencia de numerosas enfermedades entre distintos lugares geográficos, o entre diferentes momentos históricos de un mismo lugar.

Resumo Introdução: As doenças do aparelho circulatório representam a principal causa de adoecimento e mortes na população mundial. Objetivo: Estimar a prevalência de alto risco para evento coronário (ARC) e os fatores associados na população adulta brasileira. Método: Estudo transversal, com base nos dados da Pesquisa Nacional de Saúde 2013. Para os indivíduos classificados em ARC, segundo a primeira fase de estratificação da I Diretriz Brasileira de Prevenção Cardiovascular, avaliou-se a associação dessa condição com variáveis sociodemográficas, condição de saúde e hábitos e estilo de vida. A análise estatística foi realizada em três etapas: descritiva, bivariada e múltipla. Consideraram-se os pesos amostrais e o efeito de desenho do plano de amostragem complexo, utilizando-se da biblioteca survey do programa estatístico R, versão 3.2.2. Resultados: A prevalência de ARC na população brasileira foi de 11,06% (IC95% 10,83–11,29). Observou-se maior proporção de ARC com o avançar da idade, em indivíduos residentes no centro-sul, que autoavaliaram a saúde como ruim/muito ruim, ex-fumantes e hipertensos. Conclusões: A população brasileira apresentou alta prevalência de ARC e, assim, possui mais de 20% de risco de um evento coronário agudo nos próximos dez anos, caso medidas de prevenção e controle não sejam tomadas.

The demography of, and factors that influence these metrics, are largely unknown for most vultures in the Americas. Survivorship of Turkey Vultures (Cathartes aura) may be influenced by landscape heterogeneity and human disturbance. We quantified the effects of landscape composition (Shannon's diversity index) and configuration (contagion, edge density, and largest patch index), and human disturbance (road density) on the annual and seasonal survival probabilities of the three North American breeding populations (western, central, and eastern) of Turkey Vultures that spend the nonbreeding season in the southeastern portion of the Nearctic and the northern Neotropics during a 17-year period. We used Cox's proportional hazards models with time-varying covariates to estimate spatial and temporal changes in survival rates of adult Turkey Vultures. Road density, but not landscape composition or configuration, influenced survival rates in space and time. Overall annual survival averaged 0.87 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.74-0.98). Mortality risk was low in western and central populations (hazard ratio < 1) but was 3.7 times greater for vultures in the eastern population. Survival during the breeding (0.97, 95% CI: 0.96-0.98) and outbound migration (1.0, 95% CI: 1-1) seasons was significantly higher than the other seasons. Average survival tended to be higher for nonbreeding (0.81, 95% CI: 0.71-0.88) compared to return migration (0.69, 95% CI: 0.56-0.81) seasons. The risk of mortality for all vulture populations increased with road density, and this was greater during the nonbreeding and return migration seasons. The spatial variation in road density across the Americas may generate a network of ecological traps for Turkey Vultures induced to stop in areas of greater road-kill abundance. Road-killed animals acting as an attractant for vultures can increase the occurrence of vulture-vehicle collisions and potentially aggravate human-wildlife conflicts. Further analyses are needed to address survivorship and mortality factors for young birds. Our results may help the implementation of specific mitigation efforts to reduce human-vulture conflicts and vulture mortality. For instance, concentrating efforts to remove road-killed animals in areas where road density is highest can likely reduce vulture-vehicle collisions and associated mortalities of these birds. The article presents a synthetic assessment of the diversity of the housing situation in Polish communes in the context of ongoing demographic changes. In addition, it presents an original method of typological research combining measures of the housing and demographic situation for all 2,477 communes in Poland as at the end of 2021. The scope of the study covered the years 2011-2021. The article identified that both functional urban areas and coastal municipalities have their own specificity in terms of housing and demographic situation, to a lesser extent this phenomenon affects mountain municipalities. It was also pointed out that the lack of a place-based policy in the National Housing Program makes it difficult to shape the national housing policy in a manner adapted to local and regional conditions. Background: Diseases of the circulatory system are the leading cause of illness and death in the world population. Objective: Estimate the prevalence of high risk for coronary events (HRC) and associated factors in the Brazilian adult population. Method: This is a cross-sectional study, based on data from the National Health Survey 2013. The association of this condition with sociodemographic, health condition, and habits and lifestyle was evaluated for individuals as in HRC, according to the first stratification phase of the I Brazilian Directive of Cardiovascular Prevention. Statistical analysis was performed in three stages: descriptive; bivariate; and multiple analysis. Sampling weights and design effect of the complex sampling plan were considered, using the survey library of the statistical program R, version 3.2.2. Results: The prevalence of HRC in the Brazilian population was 11.06% (95%CI 10.83–11.29). A higher prevalence of HRC was observed with advancing age, in individuals living in the Central-South, who self-rated their health as poor/very poor, former smokers, and individuals with systemic arterial hypertension. Conclusions: The Brazilian population presented a high prevalence of HRC and, thus, has a more than 20% risk of an acute coronary event in the next ten years, if prevention and control measures are not taken. Con motivo de los 15 años de la Revista Latinoamericana de Población (RELAP), en este estudio analizamos información básica sobre sus artículos y autores/as para evidenciar la evolución de la agenda de investigación demográfica latinoamericana a partir de la producción científica publicada en una de las revistas más importantes de la región. Encontramos que, en los primeros años de la revista, hubo un énfasis en la producción sobre familias y migración, mientras que, en los últimos años, la investigación sobre mortalidad y salud incrementó su importancia relativa. En general, se observa una diversidad temática; sin embargo, existen brechas significativas en la distribución de artículos según el país del primer autor/a y el país de estudio. Se evidencia la paridad según el sexo del primer autor/a, así como el carácter colectivo de las publicaciones de RELAP por una alta incidencia de textos con varios autores.

Introducción: Uno de los logros más importantes de la ciencia del siglo XX ha sido el avance en la medición de la riqueza comparativa de los países mediante indicadores, se destacan el producto interno bruto y el índice de desarrollo humano. Objetivo: Evaluar la validez del índice demográfico integral en la medición del nivel de desarrollo y estado de salud de una población para establecer un orden jerárquico acorde a estas 2 características. Método: Se realizó un estudio ecológico, se escogió como población a los 191 países que en el año 2019 disponían de información para el cálculo del índice de desarrollo humano; la muestra fue seleccionada por un muestreo simple aleatorio. La información se obtuvo de la página web Datosmacro. Para analizar los datos se emplearon los coeficientes de validez de Hernández- Nieto y V de Aiken, análisis factorial, correlación de Spearman y el coeficiente de Kappa. Resultados: El análisis por ítems reflejó un elevado acuerdo entre los jueces. Existió una alta correlación y elevada concordancia entre el índice demográfico integral y el índice de desarrollo humano. Se identificó una perfecta correlación entre los indicadores evaluados y el grado de desarrollo, con correlaciones iguales a 1 y -1. Conclusión: El índice demográfico integral constituye un indicador válido en la evaluación del envejecimiento, estado de salud y grado de desarrollo entre países, lo que permitió el ordenamiento de las poblaciones acorde a su desarrollo y condición de salud.
