In this work, we introduce some basic principles of "PT-symmetric Klein-Gordon nonlinear field theories. By formulating a particular antisymmetric gain and loss profile, we illustrate that the stationary states of the model do not change. However, the stability critically depends on the gain and loss profile. For a symmetrically placed solitary wave (in either the continuum model or a discrete analog of the nonlinear Klein-Gordon type), there is no effect on the steady state spectrum. However, for asymmetrically placed solutions, there exists a measurable effect of which a perturbative mathematical characterization is offered. It is generally found that asymmetry towards the lossy side leads towards stability, while towards the gain side produces instability. Furthermore, a host of finite size effects, which disappear in the infinite domain limit, are illustrated in connection to the continuous spectrum of the problem. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We study matter-wave bright solitons in spin-orbit coupled Bose-Einstein condensates with attractive interactions. We use a multiscale expansion method to identify solution families for chemical potentials in the semi-infinite gap of the linear energy spectrum. Depending on the linear and spin-orbit coupling strengths, the solitons may present either a sech²-shaped or a modulated density profile reminiscent of the stripe phase of spin-orbit coupled repulsive Bose-Einstein condensates. Our numerical results are in excellent agreement with our analytical findings and demonstrate the potential robustness of solitons for experimentally relevant conditions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this short topical review, we revisit a number of works on the pattern-forming dynamical instabilities of Bose­Einstein condensates in one- and two-dimensional settings. In particular, we illustrate the trapping conditions that allow the reduction of the three-dimensional, mean field description of the condensates (through the Gross­Pitaevskii equation) to such lower dimensional settings, as well as to lattice settings. We then go on to study the modulational instability in one dimension and the snaking/transverse instability in two dimensions as typical examples of long-wavelength perturbations that can destabilize the condensates and lead to the formation of patterns of coherent struc- tures in them. Trains of solitons in one dimension and vortex arrays in two dimensions are prototypical examples of the resulting nonlinear waveforms, upon which we briefly touch at the end of this review. We consider the Adlam-Allen (AA) system of partial differential equations, which, arguably, is the first model that was introduced to describe solitary waves in the context of propagation of hydrodynamic disturbances in collisionless plasmas. Here, we identify the solitary waves of the model by implementing a dynamical systems approach. The latter suggests that the model also possesses periodic wave solutions--which reduce to the solitary wave in the limiting case of an infinite period--as well as rational solutions that are obtained herein. In addition, employing a long-wave approximation via a relevant multiscale expansion method, we establish the asymptotic reduction of the AA system to the Korteweg-de Vries equation. Such a reduction is not only another justification for the above solitary wave dynamics, but may also offer additional insights for the emergence of other possible plasma waves. Direct numerical simulations are performed for the study of multiple solitary waves and their pairwise interactions. The stability of solitary waves is discussed in terms of potentially relevant criteria, while the robustness of spatially periodic wave solutions is touched upon via numerical experiments. We study a two-dimensional incoherently pumped exciton-polariton condensate described by an open-dissipative Gross-Pitaevskii equation for the polariton dynamics coupled to a rate equation for the exciton density. Adopting a hydrodynamic approach, we use multiscale expansion methods to derive several models appearing in the context of shallow water waves with viscosity. In particular, we derive a Boussinesq/Benney-Luke-type equation and its far-field expansion in terms of Kadomtsev-Petviashvili-I (KP-I) equations for right- and left-going waves. From the KP-I model, we predict the existence of vorticity-free, weakly (algebraically) localized two-dimensional dark-lump solitons. We find that, in the presence of dissipation, dark lumps exhibit a lifetime three times larger than that of planar dark solitons. Direct numerical simulations show that dark lumps do exist, and their dissipative dynamics is well captured by our analytical approximation. It is also shown that lumplike and vortexlike structures can spontaneously be formed as a result of the transverse "snaking" instability of dark soliton stripes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We examine the spectral properties of single and multiple matter-wave dark solitons in Bose-Einstein condensates confined in parabolic traps, where the scattering length is periodically modulated. In addition to the large density limit picture previously established for homogeneous nonlinearities, we explore a perturbative analysis in the vicinity of the linear limit, which provides good agreement with the observed spectral modes. Between these two analytically tractable limits, we use numerical computations to fill in the relevant intermediate regime. We find that the scattering length modulation can cause a variety of features absent for homogeneous nonlinearities. Among them, we note the potential oscillatory instability even of the single dark soliton, the potential absence of instabilities in the immediate vicinity of the linear limit for two dark solitons, and the existence of an exponential instability associated with the in-phase motion of three dark solitons. We study a two-component nonlinear Schrödinger system with equal, repulsive cubic interactions and different dispersion coefficients in the two components. We consider states that have a dark solitary wave in one component. Treating it as a frozen one, we explore the possibility of the formation of bright-solitonic structures in the other component. We identify bifurcation points at which such states emerge in the bright component in the linear limit and explore their continuation into the nonlinear regime. An additional analytically tractable limit is found to be that of vanishing dispersion of the bright component. We numerically identify regimes of potential stability, not only of the single-peak ground state (the dark-bright soliton), but also of excited states with one or more zero crossings in the bright component. When the states are identified as unstable, direct numerical simulations are used to investigate the outcome of the instability development. Although our principal focus is on the homogeneous setting, we also briefly touch upon the counterintuitive impact of the potential presence of a parabolic trap on the states of interest. In this work, we study a model of a one-dimensional magnetic metamaterial formed by a discrete array of nonlinear resonators. We focus on periodic and localized traveling waves of the model, in the presence of loss and an external drive. Employing a Melnikov analysis we study the existence and persistence of such traveling waves, and study their linear stability. We show that, under certain conditions, the presence of dissipation and/or driving may stabilize or destabilize the solutions. In this paper, we revisit one of the prototypical PT-symmetric oligomers, namely the trimer. We find all the relevant branches of 'regular' solutions and analyze the bifurcations and instabilities thereof. Our work generalizes the formulation that was recently proposed in the case of dimers for the so-called 'ghost states' of trimers, which we also identify and connect to symmetrybreaking bifurcations from the regular states. We also examine the dynamics of unstable trimers, as well as those of the ghost states in the parametric regime where the latter are found to exist. Finally, we present the current state-of-theart for optical experiments in PT -symmetric trimers, as well as experimental results in a gain-loss-gain three channel waveguide structure. We study the classical dynamics of SU(2)-Higgs field theory using multiple-scale perturbation theory. In the spontaneously broken phase, assuming small perturbations of the Higgs field around its vacuum expectation value, we derive a nonlinear Schrôdinger equation and study the stability of its nonlinear plane wave solutions. The latter turn out to be stable only if the Higgs amplitude is an order of magnitude smaller than that of the gauge field. In this case, the Higgs field mass possesses some bounds which may be relevant to the search for the Higgs particle at ongoing experiments. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We study the existence and stability of solutions of the two-dimensional nonlinear Schrödinger equation in the combined presence of a parabolic and a periodic potential. The motivating physical example consists of Bose–Einstein condensates confined in an harmonic (e.g., magnetic) trap and an optical lattice. By connecting the nonlinear problem with the underlying linear spectrum, we examine the bifurcation of nonlinear modes out of the linear ones for both focusing and defocusing nonlinearities. In particular, we find real-valued solutions (such as multipoles) and complex-valued ones (such as vortices). A primary motivation of the present work is to develop “rules of thumb” about what waveforms to expect emerging in the nonlinear problem and about the stability of those modes. As a case example of the latter, we find that among the real-valued solutions, the one with larger norm for a fixed value of the chemical potential is expected to be unstable. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this brief review we summarize a number of recent developments in the study of vortices in Bose–Einstein condensates, a topic of considerable theoretical and experimental interest in the past few years. We examine the generation of vortices by means of phase imprinting, as well as via dynamical instabilities. Their stability is subsequently examined in the presence of purely magnetic trapping, and in the combined presence of magnetic and optical trapping. We then study pairs of vortices and their interactions, illustrating a reduced description in terms of ordinary differential equations for the vortex centers. In the realm of two vortices we also consider the existence of stable dipole clusters for two-component condensates. Last but not least, we discuss mesoscopic patterns formed by vortices, the so-called vortex lattices and analyze some of their intriguing dynamical features. We produce several families of solutions for two-component nonlinear Schrödinger/Gross-Pitaevskii equations. These include domain walls and the first example of an antidark or gray soliton in one component, bound to a bright or dark soliton in the other. Most of these solutions are linearly stable in their entire domain of existence. Some of them are relevant to nonlinear optics, and all to Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs). In the latter context, we demonstrate robustness of the structures in the presence of parabolic and periodic potentials (corresponding, respectively, to the magnetic trap and optical lattices in BECs). We study asymptotic reductions and solitary waves of a weakly nonlocal defocusing nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) model. The hydrodynamic form of the latter is analyzed by means of multiscale expansion methods. To the leading-order of approximation (where only the first of the moments of the response function is present), we show that solitary waves, in the form of dark solitons, are governed by an effective Boussinesq/Benney–Luke (BBL) equation, which describes bidirectional waves in shallow water. Then, for long times, we reduce the BBL equation to a pair of Korteweg–de Vries (KdV) equations for right- and left-going waves, and show that the BBL solitary wave transforms into a KdV soliton. In addition, to the next order of approximation (where both the first and second moment of the response function are present), we find that dark solitons are governed by a higher-order perturbed KdV (pKdV) equation, which has been used to describe ion-acoustic solitons in plasmas and water waves in the presence of higher-order effects. The pKdV equation is approximated by a higher-order integrable system and, as a result, only insubstantial changes in the soliton shape and velocity are found, while no radiation tails (in this effective KdV picture) are produced. In this work, a systematic study, examining the propagation of periodic and solitary waves along the magnetic field in a cold collision-free plasma, is presented. Employing the quasi-neutral approximation and the conservation of momentum flux and energy flux in the frame co-traveling with the wave, the exact analytical solution of the stationary solitary pulse is found analytically in terms of particle densities, parallel and transverse velocities, as well as transverse magnetic fields. Subsequently, this solution is generalized in the form of periodic waveforms represented by cnoidal-type waves. These considerations are fully analytical in the case where the total angular momentum flux L, due to the ion and electron motion together with the contribution due to the Maxwell stresses, vanishes. In the present work, we aim at taking a step towards the spectral stability analysis of Peregrine solitons, i.e., wave structures that are used to emulate extreme wave events. Given the space-time localized nature of Peregrine solitons, this is a priori a nontrivial task. Our main tool in this effort will be the study of the spectral stability of the periodic generalization of the Peregrine soliton in the evolution variable, namely the Kuznetsov-Ma breather. Given the periodic structure of the latter, we compute the corresponding Floquet multipliers, and examine them in the limit where the period of the orbit tends to infinity. This way, we extrapolate towards the stability of the limiting structure, namely the Peregrine soliton. We find that multiple unstable modes of the background are enhanced, yet no additional unstable eigenmodes arise as the Peregrine limit is approached. We consider a two-component, two-dimensional nonlinear Schrödinger system with unequal dispersion coefficients and self-defocusing nonlinearities, chiefly with equal strengths of the self- and cross-interactions. In this setting, a natural waveform with a nonvanishing background in one component is a vortex, which induces an effective potential well in the second component, via the nonlinear coupling of the two components. We show that the potential well may support not only the fundamental bound state, but also multiring excited radial state complexes for suitable ranges of values of the dispersion coefficient of the second component. We systematically explore the existence, stability, and nonlinear dynamics of these states. The complexes involving the excited radial states are weakly unstable, with a growth rate depending on the dispersion of the second component. Their evolution leads to transformation of the multiring complexes into stable vortex-bright solitons ones with the fundamental state in the second component. The excited states may be stabilized by a harmonic-oscillator trapping potential, as well as by unequal strengths of the self- and cross-repulsive nonlinearities. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We consider a two-dimensional (2D) generalization of a recently proposed model [Gligorić et al., Phys. Rev. E 88, 032905 (2013)], which gives rise to bright discrete solitons supported by the defocusing nonlinearity whose local strength grows from the center to the periphery. We explore the 2D model starting from the anticontinuum (AC) limit of vanishing coupling. In this limit, we can construct a wide variety of solutions including not only single-site excitations, but also dipole and quadrupole ones. Additionally, two separate families of solutions are explored: the usual "extended" unstaggered bright solitons, in which all sites are excited in the AC limit, with the same sign across the lattice (they represent the most robust states supported by the lattice, their 1D counterparts being those considered as 1D bright solitons in the above-mentioned work), and the vortex cross, which is specific to the 2D setting. For all the existing states, we explore their stability (also analytically, when possible). Typical scenarios of instability development are exhibited through direct simulations. We report experimental results and study theoretically soliton formation and propagation in an air-filled acoustic waveguide side loaded with Helmholtz resonators. We propose a theoretical modeling of the system, which relies on a transmission-line approach, leading to a nonlinear dynamical lattice model. The latter allows for an analytical description of the various soliton solutions for the pressure, which are found by means of dynamical systems and multiscale expansion techniques. These solutions include Boussinesq-like and Korteweg-de Vries pulse-shaped solitons that are observed in the experiment, as well as nonlinear Schrödinger envelope solitons, that are predicted theoretically. We study the dynamics of non-autonomous bright-dark matter-wave solitons in two- and three-component Bose-Einstein condensates. Our setting includes a time-dependent parabolic potential and scattering length, as well as Rabi coupling of the separate hyperfine states. By means of a similarity transformation, we transform the non-autonomous coupled Gross-Pitaevskii equations into the completely integrable Manakov model with defocusing nonlinearity, and construct the explicit form of the non-autonomous soliton solutions. The propagation characteristics for the one-soliton state, and collision scenarios for multiple soliton states are discussed in detail for two types of time-dependent nonlinearities: a kink-like one and a periodically modulated one, with appropriate time-dependence of the trapping potential. We find that in the two-component condensates the nature of soliton propagation is determined predominantly by the nature of the nonlinearity, as well as the temporal modulation of the harmonic potential; switching in this setting is essentially due to Rabi coupling. We also perform direct numerical simulation of the non-autonomous two-component coupled Gross-Pitaevskii equations to corroborate our analytical predictions. More interestingly, in the case of the three-component condensates, we find that the solitons can lead to collisioninduced energy switching (energy sharing collision), that can be profitably used to control Rabi switching or vice versa. An interesting possibility of reversal of the nature of the constituent soliton, i.e., bright (dark) into dark (bright) due to Rabi coupling is demonstrated in the three-component setting. In the present work, we consider the problem of a system of few vortices N≤5 as it emerges from its experimental realization in the field of atomic Bose-Einstein condensates. Starting from the corresponding equations of motion for an axially symmetric trapped condensate, we use a two-pronged approach in order to reveal the configuration space of the system's preferred dynamical states. We use a Monte Carlo method parametrizing the vortex particles by means of hyperspherical coordinates and identifying the minimal energy ground states thereof for N=2,...,5 and different vortex particle angular momenta. We then complement this picture with a dynamical system analysis of the possible rigidly rotating states. The latter reveals a supercritical and subcritical pitchfork, as well as saddle-center bifurcations that arise, exposing the full wealth of the problem even for such low-dimensional cases. By corroborating the results of the two methods, it becomes fairly transparent which branch the Monte Carlo approach selects for different values of the angular momentum that is used as a bifurcation parameter. We study the coupling between backward- and forward-propagating wave modes, with the same group velocity, in a composite right- and left-handed nonlinear transmission line. Using an asymptotic multiscale expansion technique, we derive a system of two coupled nonlinear Schrödinger equations governing the evolution of the envelopes of these modes. We show that this system supports a variety of backward- and forward-propagating vector solitons of the bright-bright, bright-dark, and dark-bright type. Performing systematic numerical simulations in the framework of the original lattice that models the transmission line, we study the propagation properties of the derived vector soliton solutions. We show that all types of the predicted solitons exist, but differ on their robustness: Only bright-bright solitons propagate undistorted for long times, while the other types are less robust, featuring shorter lifetimes. In all cases, our analytical predictions are in very good agreement with the results of the simulations, at least up to times of the order of the solitons' lifetimes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The occurrence of rogue waves (freak waves) associated with electromagnetic pulse propagation interacting with a plasma is investigated, from first principles. A multiscale technique is employed to solve the fluid Maxwell equations describing weakly nonlinear circularly polarized electromagnetic pulses in magnetized plasmas. A nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) type equation is shown to govern the amplitude of the vector potential. A set of non-stationary envelope solutions of the NLS equation are considered as potential candidates for the modeling of rogue waves (freak waves) in beam–plasma interactions, namely in the form of the Peregrine soliton, the Akhmediev breather and the Kuznetsov–Ma breather. The variation of the structural properties of the latter structures with relevant plasma parameters is investigated, in particular focusing on the ratio between the (magnetic field dependent) cyclotron (gyro-)frequency and the plasma frequency. We study the dynamics of small vortex clusters with a few (2-4) corotating vortices in Bose-Einstein condensates by means of experiments, numerical computations, and theoretical analysis. All of these approaches corroborate the counterintuitive presence of a dynamical instability of symmetric vortex configurations. The instability arises as a pitchfork bifurcation at sufficiently large values of the vortex system angular momentum that induces the emergence and stabilization of asymmetric rotating vortex configurations. The latter are quantified in the theoretical model and observed in the experiments. The dynamics is explored both for the integrable two-vortex particle system, where a reduction of the phase space of the system provides valuable insight, as well as for the nonintegrable three- (or more) vortex case, which additionally admits the possibility of chaotic trajectories. In this work, we examine the collision of an atomic dark-bright soliton, in a two-component Bose-Einstein condensate, with a Gaussian barrier or well. Our study has both an experimental component and a theoretical/computational one. First, we present the results of an experiment, illustrating the classical particle phenomenology (transmission or reflection) in the case of an equal barrier in both components. Then, motivated by the experimental observations, we perform systematic simulations considering not only the case of equal heights of a barrier (or a well), but also the considerably more complex setting, where the potential affects only one of the two components. We systematically classify the ensuing cases within a two-parameter diagram of potential amplitudes in the two components, and provide intuitive explanations for the resulting observations, as well as of their variations as the strength of the potential changes. The generation and dynamics of dark solitons in mode-locked lasers is studied within the framework of a nonlinear Schrödinger equation which incorporates power-saturated loss, as well as energy-saturated gain and filtering. Modelocking into single dark solitons and multiple dark pulses are found by employing different descriptions for the energy and power of the system defined over unbounded and periodic (ring laser) systems. Treating the loss, gain and filtering terms as perturbations, it is shown that these terms induce an expanding shelf around the soliton. The dark soliton dynamics are studied analytically by means of a perturbation method that takes into regard the emergence of the shelves and reveals their importance. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Motivated by recent experimental results, we study beating dark-dark (DD) solitons as a prototypical coherent structure that emerges in two-component Bose-Einstein condensates. We showcase their connection to dark-bright solitons via SO(2) rotation, and infer from it both their intrinsic beating frequency and their frequency of oscillation inside a parabolic trap. We identify them as exact periodic orbits in the Manakov limit of equal inter- and intra-species nonlinearity strengths with and without the trap and showcase the persistence of such states upon weak deviations from this limit. We also consider large deviations from the Manakov limit illustrating that this breathing state may be broken apart into dark-anti-dark soliton states. Finally, we consider the dynamics and interactions of two beating DD solitons in the absence and in the presence of the trap, inferring their typically repulsive interaction. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We study the dynamics of dark-bright (DB) solitons in binary mixtures of Bose gases at finite temperature using a system of two coupled dissipative Gross-Pitaevskii equations. We develop a perturbation theory for the two-component system to derive an equation of motion for the soliton centers and identify different temperature-dependent damping regimes. We show that the effect of the bright ('filling') soliton component is to partially stabilize 'bare' dark solitons against temperature-induced dissipation, thus providing longer lifetimes. We also study analytically thermal effects on DB soliton 'molecules' (i.e. two in-phase and out-of-phase DB solitons), showing that they undergo expanding oscillations while interacting. Our analytical findings are in good agreement with results obtained via a Bogoliubov-de Gennes analysis and direct numerical simulations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In the framework of a one-dimensional model with a tightly localized self-attractive nonlinearity, we study the formation and transfer (dragging) of a trapped mode by "nonlinear tweezers" as well as the scattering of coherent linear wave packets on the stationary localized nonlinearity. The use of a nonlinear trap for dragging allows one to pick up and transfer the relevant structures without grabbing surrounding "radiation." A stability border for the dragged modes is identified by means of analytical estimates and systematic simulations. In the framework of the scattering problem, the shares of trapped, reflected, and transmitted wave fields are found. Quasi-Airy stationary modes with a divergent norm, which may be dragged by a nonlinear trap moving at a constant acceleration, are briefly considered too. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A direct perturbation method for approximating dark soliton solutions of the nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equation under the influence of perturbations is presented. The problem is broken into an inner region, where the core of the soliton resides, and an outer region, which evolves independently of the soliton. It is shown that a shelf develops around the soliton that propagates with speed determined by the background intensity. Integral relations obtained from the conservation laws of the NLS equation are used to determine the properties of the shelf. The analysis is developed for both constant and slowly evolving backgrounds. A number of problems are investigated, including linear and nonlinear damping type perturbations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We study a discrete nonlinear Schrödinger lattice with a parabolic trapping potential. The model, describing, e.g., an array of repulsive Bose-Einstein condensate droplets confined in the wells of an optical lattice, is analytically and numerically investigated. Starting from the linear limit of the problem, we use global bifurcation theory to rigorously prove that - in the discrete regime - all linear states lead to nonlinear generalizations thereof, which assume the form of a chain of discrete dark solitons (as the density increases). The stability of the ensuing nonlinear states is studied and it is found that the ground state is stable, while the excited states feature a chain of stability/instability bands. We illustrate the mechanisms under which discreteness destabilizes the dark-soliton configurations, which become stable only in the continuum regime. A quantized vortex dipole is the simplest vortex molecule, comprising two countercirculating vortex lines in a superfluid. Although vortex dipoles are endemic in two-dimensional superfluids, the precise details of their dynamics have remained largely unexplored. We present here several striking observations of vortex dipoles in dilute-gas Bose-Einstein condensates, and develop a vortex-particle model that generates vortex line trajectories that are in good agreement with the experimental data. Interestingly, these diverse trajectories exhibit essentially identical quasiperiodic behavior, in which the vortex lines undergo stable epicyclic orbits. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We study the propagation of quasidiscrete microwave solitons in a nonlinear left-handed coplanar waveguide coupled with split-ring resonators. By considering the relevant transmission line analog, we derive a nonlinear lattice model which is studied analytically by means of a quasidiscrete approximation. We derive a nonlinear Schrödinger equation, and find that the system supports bright envelope soliton solutions in a relatively wide subinterval of the left-handed frequency band. We perform systematic numerical simulations, in the framework of the nonlinear lattice model, to study the propagation properties of the quasidiscrete microwave solitons. We introduce a one-dimensional model of Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs), combining the double-well potential, which is a usual setting for the onset of spontaneous-symmetry-breaking (SSB) effects, and time-periodic modulation of the nonlinearity, which may be implemented by means of the Feshbach-resonance-management (FRM) technique. Both cases of the nonlinearity that is repulsive or attractive on the average are considered. In the former case, the main effect produced by the application of the FRM is spontaneous self-trapping of the condensate in either of the two potential wells in parameter regimes where it would remain untrapped in the absence of the management. In the weakly nonlinear regime, the frequency of intrinsic oscillations in the FRM-induced trapped state is very close to half the FRM frequency, suggesting that the effect is accounted for by a parametric resonance. In the case of the attractive nonlinearity, the FRM-induced effect is the opposite, i.e., enforced detrapping of a state which is self-trapped in its unmanaged form. In the latter case, the frequency of oscillations of the untrapped mode is close to a quarter of the driving frequency, suggesting that a higher-order parametric resonance may account for this effect. Dilute-gas Bose-Einstein condensates are an exceptionally versatile test bed for the investigation of novel solitonic structures. While matter-wave solitons in one- and two-component systems have been the focus of intense research efforts, an extension to three components has never been attempted in experiments. Here, we experimentally demonstrate the existence of robust dark-bright-bright (DBB) and dark-dark-bright solitons in a multicomponent F=1 condensate. We observe lifetimes on the order of hundreds of milliseconds for these structures. Our theoretical analysis, based on a multiscale expansion method, shows that small-amplitude solitons of these types obey universal long-short wave resonant interaction models, namely, Yajima-Oikawa systems. Our experimental and analytical findings are corroborated by direct numerical simulations highlighting the persistence of, e.g., the DBB soliton states, as well as their robust oscillations in the trap. Consider a lower-dimensional solitonic structure embedded in a higher-dimensional space, e.g., a 1D dark soliton embedded in 2D space, a ring dark soliton in 2D space, a spherical shell soliton in 3D space, etc. By extending the Landau dynamics approach [Phys. Rev. Lett. 93, 240403 (2004)], we show that it is possible to capture the transverse dynamical modes (the "Kelvin modes") of the undulation of this "soliton filament" within the higher-dimensional space. These are the transverse stability or instability modes and are the ones potentially responsible for the breakup of the soliton into structures such as vortices, vortex rings, etc. We present the theory and case examples in 2D and 3D, corroborating the results by numerical stability and dynamical computations. In the present work, we explore soliton and roguelike wave solutions in the transmission line analog of a nonlinear left-handed metamaterial. The nonlinearity is expressed through a voltage-dependent, symmetric capacitance motivated by recently developed ferroelectric barium strontium titanate thin-film capacitor designs. We develop both the corresponding nonlinear dynamical lattice and its reduction via a multiple scales expansion to a nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) model for the envelope of a given carrier wave. The reduced model can feature either a focusing or a defocusing nonlinearity depending on the frequency (wave number) of the carrier. We then consider the robustness of different types of solitary waves of the reduced model within the original nonlinear left-handed medium. We find that both bright and dark solitons persist in a suitable parametric regime, where the reduction to the NLS model is valid. Additionally, for suitable initial conditions, we observe a rogue wave type of behavior that differs significantly from the classic Peregrine rogue wave evolution, including most notably the breakup of a single Peregrine-like pattern into solutions with multiple wave peaks. Finally, we touch upon the behavior of generalized members of the family of the Peregrine solitons, namely, Akhmediev breathers and Kuznetsov-Ma solitons, and explore how these evolve in the left-handed transmission line. The dynamical behavior of a higher-order cubic Ginzburg-Landau equation is found to include a wide range of scenarios due to the interplay of higher-order physically relevant terms. We find that the competition between the third-order dispersion and stimulated Raman scattering effects gives rise to rich dynamics: this extends from Poincaré-Bendixson-type scenarios, in the sense that bounded solutions may converge either to distinct equilibria via orbital connections or to space-time periodic solutions, to the emergence of almost periodic and chaotic behavior. One of our main results is that third-order dispersion has a dominant role in the development of such complex dynamics, since it can be chiefly responsible (even in the absence of other higher-order effects) for the existence of periodic, quasiperiodic, and chaotic spatiotemporal structures. Suitable low-dimensional phase-space diagnostics are devised and used to illustrate the different possibilities and identify their respective parametric intervals over multiple parameters of the model. In this work we consider the dynamics of vector rogue waves and dark-bright solitons in two-component nonlinear Schrödinger equations with various physically motivated time-dependent nonlinearity coefficients, as well as spatiotemporally dependent potentials. A similarity transformation is utilized to convert the system into the integrable Manakov system and subsequently the vector rogue and dark-bright boomeronlike soliton solutions of the latter are converted back into ones of the original nonautonomous model. Using direct numerical simulations we find that, in most cases, the rogue wave formation is rapidly followed by a modulational instability that leads to the emergence of an expanding soliton train. The properties of the so-called regularized short pulse equation (RSPE) are explored with a particular focus on the traveling wave solutions of this model. We theoretically analyze and numerically evolve two sets of such solutions. First, using a fixed point iteration scheme, we numerically integrate the equation to find solitary waves. It is found that these solutions are well approximated by a finite sum of hyperbolic secants powers. The dependence of the solitonʼs parameters (height, width, etc) to the parameters of the equation is also investigated. Second, by developing a multiple scale reduction of the RSPE to the nonlinear Schrödinger equation, we are able to construct (both standing and traveling) envelope wave breather type solutions of the former, based on the solitary wave structures of the latter. Both the regular and the breathing traveling wave solutions identified are found to be robust and should thus be amenable to observations in the form of few optical cycle pulses.
