Implantable cell replacement therapies promise to completely restore the function of neural structures, possibly changing how we currently perceive the onset of neurodegenerative diseases. One of the major clinical hurdles for the routine implementation of stem cell therapies is poor cell retention and survival, demanding the need to better understand these mechanisms while providing precise and scalable approaches to monitor these cell-based therapies in both pre-clinical and clinical scenarios. This poses significant multidisciplinary challenges regarding planning, defining the methodology and requirements, prototyping and different stages of testing. Aiming toward an optogenetic neural stem cell implant controlled by a smart wireless electronic frontend, we show how an iterative development methodology coupled with a modular design philosophy can mitigate some of these challenges. In this study, we present a miniaturized, wireless-controlled, modular multisensor platform with fully interfaced electronics featuring three different modules: an impedance analyzer, a potentiostat and an optical stimulator. We show the application of the platform for electrical impedance spectroscopy-based cell monitoring, optical stimulation to induce dopamine release from optogenetically modified neurons and a potentiostat for cyclic voltammetry and amperometric detection of dopamine release. The multisensor platform is designed to be used as an opto-electric headstage for future in vivo animal experiments.

We show that a programmable photonic integrated processor can separate, directly in the optical domain, spatially-overlapped free-space optical beams with unknown shapes, sharing the same wavelength and polarization.

Spontaneous Raman microscopy reveals the chemical composition of a sample in a label-free and non-invasive fashion by directly measuring the vibrational spectra of molecules. However, its extremely low cross section prevents its application to fast imaging. Stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) amplifies the signal by several orders of magnitude thanks to the coherent nature of the nonlinear process, thus unlocking high-speed microscopy applications that provide analytical information to elucidate biochemical mechanisms with subcellular resolution. Nevertheless, in its standard implementation, narrowband SRS provides images at only one frequency at a time, which is not sufficient to distinguish constituents with overlapping Raman bands. Here, we report a broadband SRS microscope equipped with a home-built multichannel lock-in amplifier simultaneously measuring the SRS signal at 32 frequencies with integration time down to 44 µs, allowing for detailed, high spatial resolution mapping of spectrally congested samples. We demonstrate the capability of our microscope to differentiate the chemical constituents of heterogeneous samples by measuring the relative concentrations of different fatty acids in cultured hepatocytes at the single lipid droplet level and by differentiating tumor from peritumoral tissue in a preclinical mouse model of fibrosarcoma.

Abstract Real‐time control of multiple cascaded devices is a key requirement for the development of complex silicon photonic circuits performing new sophisticated optical functionalities. This article describes how the dithering technique can be leveraged in combination with non‐invasive light probes to independently control the working point of many photonic components. The standard technique is extended by introducing the concept of orthogonal dithering signals to simultaneously discriminate the effect of different actuators, while the idea of frequency re‐use is discussed to limit the complexity of control systems in cascaded architectures. After a careful analysis of the problem, the article presents an automated feedback strategy to tune and lock photonic devices in the maxima/minima of their transfer functions with given response speed and sensitivity. The trade‐offs of this approach are discussed in detail to provide guidelines for the design of the feedback loop. Experimental demonstrations on a mesh of Mach‐Zehnder interferometers and on cascaded ring resonators are discussed to validate the proposed control architecture in different scenarios and applications.

Recent advancements in quantum key distribution (QKD) protocols opened the chance to exploit nonlaser sources for their implementation. A possible solution might consist in erbium-doped light emitting diodes (LEDs), which are able to produce photons in the third communication window, with a wavelength around 1550 nm. Here, we present silicon LEDs based on the electroluminescence of Er:O complexes in Si. Such sources are fabricated with a fully-compatible CMOS process on a 220 nm-thick silicon-on-insulator (SOI) wafer, the common standard in silicon photonics. The implantation depth is tuned to match the center of the silicon layer. The erbium and oxygen co-doping ratio is tuned to optimize the electroluminescence signal. We fabricate a batch of Er:O diodes with surface areas ranging from 1 µm × 1 µm to 50 µm × 50 µm emitting 1550 nm photons at room temperature. We demonstrate emission rates around 5 × 106 photons/s for a 1 µm × 1 µm device at room temperature using superconducting nanowire detectors cooled at 0.8 K. The demonstration of Er:O diodes integrated in the 220 nm SOI platform paves the way towards the creation of integrated silicon photon sources suitable for arbitrary-statistic-tolerant QKD protocols.

Abstract The architecture of a low‐leakage switch in complementary metal‐oxide‐semiconductor (CMOS) technology developed to implement long‐term analogue memories for low‐power applications is presented. The switch reduces the leakage current using a cascade of modified pass‐transistors without active circuits, thus producing a negligible power consumption. The technique is simple, modular, robust, and reduces the leakage current down to tens of aA at room temperature using a TSMC 0.18 µm technology.

Abstract Malaria remains the most important mosquito‐borne infectious disease worldwide, with 229 million new cases and 409.000 deaths in 2019. The infection is caused by a protozoan parasite which attacks red blood cells by feeding on hemoglobin and transforming it into hemozoin. Despite the WHO recommendation of prompt malaria diagnosis, the quality of microscopy‐based diagnosis is frequently inadequate while rapid diagnostic tests based on antigens are not quantitative and still affected by non‐negligible false negative/positive results. PCR‐based methods are highly performant but still not widely used in endemic areas. Here, a diagnostic tool (TMek), based on the paramagnetic properties of hemozoin nanocrystals in infected red blood cells (i‐RBCs), is reported on. Exploiting the competition between gravity and magnetic forces, i‐RBCs in a whole blood specimen are sorted and electrically detected in a microchip. The amplitude and time evolution of the electrical signal allow for the quantification of i‐RBCs (in the range 10–105 i‐RBC µL−1) and the distinction of the infection stage. A preliminary validation study on 75 patients with clinical suspect of malaria shows on‐field operability, without false negative and a few false positive results. These findings indicate the potential of TMek as a quantitative, stage‐selective, rapid test for malaria.

Calcium silicate hydrate (C-S-H) is the main binding phase in Portland cement. The addition of C-S-H nanoparticles as nucleation seeds has successfully been used to accelerate the hydration process and the precipitation of binding phases either in conventional Portland cement or in alternative binders. Indeed, the modulation of the hydration kinetics during the early-stage dissolution-precipitation reactions, by acting on the nucleation and growth of binding phases, improves the early strength development. The fine-tuning of concrete properties in terms of compressive strength and durability by designed structural modifications can be achieved through the detailed description of the reaction products at the atomic scale. The nano-sized, chemically complex and structurally disordered nature of these phases hamper their thorough structural characterization. To this aim, we implement a novel multi-scale approach by combining forefront small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) and synchrotron wide-angle X-ray total scattering (WAXTS) analyses for the characterization of Cu-doped C-S-H nanoparticles dispersed in a colloidal suspension, used as hardening accelerator. SAXS and WAXTS data were analyzed under a unified modeling approach by developing suitable atomistic models for C-S-H nanoparticles to be used to simulate the experimental X-ray scattering pattern through the Debye scattering equation. The optimization of atomistic models against the experimental pattern, together with complementary information on the structural local order from 29Si solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance and X-ray absorption spectroscopy, provided a comprehensive description of the structure, size and morphology of C-S-H nanoparticles from the atomic to the nanometer scale. C-S-H nanoparticles were modeled as an assembly of layers composed of 7-fold coordinated Ca atoms and decorated by silicate dimers and chains. The structural layers are a few tens of nanometers in length and width, with a crystal structure resembling that of a defective tobermorite, but lacking any ordering between stacking layers.

The development of innovative diagnostic tests is fundamental in the route towards malaria eradication. Here, we discuss the sorting capabilities of an innovative test for malaria which allows the quantitative and rapid detection of all malaria species. The physical concept of the test exploits the paramagnetic property of infected erythrocytes and hemozoin crystals, the magnetic fingerprints of malaria common to all species, which allows them to undergo a selective magnetophoretic separation driven by a magnetic field gradient in competition with gravity. Upon separation, corpuscles concentrate at the surface of a silicon microchip where interdigitated electrodes are placed in close proximity to magnetic concentrators. The impedance variation proportional to the amount of attracted particles is then measured. The capability of our test to perform the selective detection of infected erythrocytes and hemozoin crystals has been tested by means of capture experiments on treated bovine red blood cells, mimicking the behavior of malaria-infected ones, and suspensions of synthetic hemozoin crystals. Different configuration angles of the chip with respect to gravity force and different thicknesses of the microfluidic chamber containing the blood sample have been investigated experimentally and by multiphysics simulations. In the paper, we describe the optimum conditions leading to maximum sensitivity and specificity of the test.

An erbium-doped silicon transistor prepared by ion implantation and co-doped with oxygen is investigated by photocurrent generation in the telecommunication range. The photocurrent is explored at room temperature as a function of the wavelength by using a supercontinuum laser source working in the μW range. The 1-μm2 transistor is tuned to involve in the transport only those electrons lying in the Er-O states. The spectrally resolved photocurrent is characterized by the typical absorption line of erbium and the linear dependence of the signal over the impinging power demonstrates that the Er-doped transistor is operating far from saturation. The relatively small number of estimated photoexcited atoms (≈ 4 × 10 4 ) makes Er-dpoed silicon potentially suitable for designing resonance-based frequency selective single photon detectors at 1550 nm.

We characterize a novel micro-sensor with pairs of interdigitated combs of microelectrodes designed to detect particles in air. We evaluate the sensor’s response to 1 µm Polystyrene Latex (PSL) particles experimentally and crosscheck the results with simulations. Experiment and simulation show good consistency. Based on the promising results we propose a redesign of the capacitive particle sensor with respect to PM2.5.

The authors report on the reductionof low-frequency noise in semiconductor polymer nanowires with respectto thin-films made of the same organic material. Flicker noise isexperimentally investigated in polymer nanowires in the range of 10–105Hz by means of field-effect transistor architectures. Thenoise in the devices is well described by the Hooge empirical modeland exhibits an average Hooge constant, which describes the currentpower spectral density of fluctuations, suppressed by 1–2 ordersof magnitude compared to thin-film devices. To explain the Hooge constantreduction, a resistor network model is developed, in which the organicsemiconducting nanostructures or films are depicted through a two-dimensionalnetwork of resistors with a square-lattice structure, accounting forthe different anisotropy and degree of structural disorder of theactive nanowires and films. Results from modeling agree well withexperimental findings. These results support enhanced structural orderthrough size-confinement in organic nanostructures as effective routeto improve the noise performance in polymer electronic devices.
