The fast, convenient, and accurate determination of railroad cars' load mass is critical to ensure safety and allow asset counting in railway infrastructure. In this paper, we propose a method for modeling the mechanical deformations that occur in the rail web under the influence of a static load transmitted through a railway wheel. According to the proposed method, a railroad car's weight can be determined from the rail deformation values. A solid model of a track section, including a railroad tie, rail, and wheel, is developed, and a multi-physics simulation technique that allows for the determination of the values of deformations and mechanical stresses in the strain gauge installation areas is presented. The influence of the loaded mass, the temperature of the rail, and the wheel position relative to the strain gauge location is considered. We also consider the possibility of using artificial neural networks to determine railroad cars' weight without specifying the coordinates of the wheel position. Gasification technology often requires the use of modeling approaches to incorporate several intermediate reactions in a complex nature. These traditional models are occasionally impractical and often challenging to bring reliable relations between performing parameters. Hence, this study outlined the solutions to overcome the challenges in modeling approaches. The use of machine learning (ML) methods is essential and a promising integration to add intelligent retrieval to traditional modeling approaches of gasification technology. Regarding this, this study charted applied ML-based artificial intelligence in the field of gasification research. This study includes a summary of applied ML algorithms, including neural network, support vector, decision tree, random forest, and gradient boosting, and their performance evaluations for gasification technologies. Hexagonal ferrites with the formula SrxBa(1−x)Fe12O19 (x = 0; 0.3; 0.5; 0.7; and 1) were prepared using the citrate method. The main feature of this synthesis is a relatively low calcination temperature of 700 °C. An X-ray diffraction study revealed a single-phase material. According to SEM, the particles were 50−70 nm in diameter. The Curie temperature of the samples that were determined using the DSC method varied in a very narrow range of 455−459 °C. Analysis of the magnetic hysteresis loops obtained at 300 K and 50 K indicated all samples as magnetically hard materials in a single-domain state. The maximal magnetic characteristics encompass strontium hexaferrite. The terahertz spectra of complex dielectric permittivity and the spectra of infrared reflectivity were measured at room temperature in the range of 6–7000 cm−1. The obtained broad-band spectra of the real and imaginary parts of permittivity reveal significant changes associated with structural distortions of the (Sr,Ba)O12 anti-cuboctahedron caused by the substitution of Ba2+ with Sr2+ in the same crystallographic positions. Biogas production from waste materials has emerged as a promising avenue for sustainable energy generation, offering a dual benefit of waste management and renewable energy production. The selection and preparation of waste feedstocks, including agricultural residues, food waste, animal manure, and municipal solid wastes, are important for this process, while the microbial communities are majorly responsible for bioconversions. This review explores the role of complex microbial communities and their functions responsible for the anaerobic digestion of wastes. It covers the crucial physiological processes including hydrolysis, acidogenesis, acetogenesis, and methanogenesis, elucidating the microbial activities and metabolic pathways involved in the prospects of improving the efficiency of biogas production. This article further discusses the influence of recent progress in molecular techniques, including genomics, metagenomics, meta-transcriptomics, and stable isotope probing. These advancements have greatly improved our understanding of microbial communities and their capabilities of biogas production from waste materials. The integration of these techniques with process monitoring and control strategies has been elaborated to offer possibilities for optimizing biogas production and ensuring process stability. Microbial additives, co-digestion of diverse feedstocks, and process optimization through microbial community engineering have been discussed as effective approaches to enhance the efficiency of biogas production. This review also outlines the emerging trends and future prospects in microbial-based biogas production, including the utilization of synthetic biology tools for engineering novel microbial strains and consortia, harnessing microbiomes from extreme environments, and integrating biogas production with other biotechnological processes. While there are several reviews regarding the technical aspects of biogas production, this article stands out by offering up-to-date insights and recommendations for leveraging the potential of microbial communities, and their physiological roles for efficient biogas production. Despite the implementation of the national “Ecology” project, attempts to develop low-carbon energy and transport, the implementation of “garbage reform” and other measures aimed at reducing the negative impact of the economy on the environment, the eco-efficiency of production systems in Russia remains low. In this paper, we propose a new approach to solving the problems of comparative assessment of the effectiveness of regional environmental management systems (R-EMS), taking into account the structural heterogeneity of the regional economies. The developed approach includes the simultaneous solution of two DEA tasks, one of which is formulated to assess the eco-efficiency of the region’s economy, and the other to assess the efficiency of spending funds aimed at protecting the environment in the region. As a result of solving two problems, the researcher receives a large amount of information that can be used in developing strategies for regional development. In particular, the information obtained can be used to develop measures to stimulate the activities of regional authorities in the field of environmental management and increase their responsibility for the effectiveness of environmental protection measures. The proposed approach was tested on the example of solving the problem of comparative assessment of the effectiveness of the R-EMSs in Russia in the period 2015-2019. However, the method developed by us is not tied to specific territories and can be used to conduct similar studies in other countries and regions.

One of the most well-known methods of intensifying the process of anaerobic digestion is the pretreatment of raw materials. For the first time, the use of a jet-driven Helmholtz oscillator for biomass pretreatment is proposed. The design of the device is optimal for creating hydraulic cavitation; however, in this case, acoustic oscillations are generated in the system and resonance occurs. In this study, the optimal design of this device was determined for the subsequent design of a cavitation reactor. The diameter of the resonant chamber was varied in the range from 28.3 to 47.5 mm, and its length from 6 to 14 mm; in addition, the diameter of the outlet was changed from 6.1 to 6.3 mm. Based on the experimental data obtained, it was found that the optimal ratio of the length of the resonator chamber to the diameter of the inlet nozzle is 1.73, and the inner diameter of the resonator chamber to the diameter of the inlet nozzle corresponds to 5.5. Improving the technology of agricultural waste disposal will ensure their maximum involvement in economic circulation, reduce the consumption of traditional fuel and energy resources, and improve the technological and machine-building base, which makes it possible to produce competitive cavitation reactors. In this article, based on the developed methodology, the stages of designing the sensitive element of a microelectromechanical gyroscope with an open-loop structure are considered. This structure is intended for use in control units for mobile objects such as robots, mobile trolleys, etc. To quickly obtain a ready-made gyroscope, a specialized integrated circuit (SW6111) was selected, for the use of which the electronic part of the sensitive element of the microelectromechanical gyroscope was developed. The mechanical structure was also taken from a simple design. The simulation of the mathematical model was carried out in the MATLAB/Simulink software environment. The mechanical elements and the entire structure were calculated using finite element modeling with ANSYS MultiPhysics CAD tools. The developed sensitive element of the micromechanical gyroscope was manufactured using bulk micromachining technology−silicon-on-insulator−with a structural layer thickness equal to 50 μ m. Experimental studies were carried out using a scanning electron microscope and a contact profilometer. Dynamic characteristics were measured using a Polytec MSA-500 microsystem analyzer. The manufactured structure has low topological deviations. Calculations and experiments showed fairly accurate results for the dynamic characteristics, with an error of less than 3% for the first iteration of the design. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this article, based on the developed methodology, the stages of designing two designs of high-performance radio-frequency single-pole single-throw microelectromechanical switches are investigated. These radio-frequency microelectromechanical switches are designed to operate at a central resonant frequency of 3.6 GHz and 3.4 GHz, respectively, as well as to work both in mobile communication devices and in the design of the architecture of 5G mobile networks, in particular in arrays of integrated antennas and radio-frequency interface modules. The manufacture and study of two designed structures are researched. For the first manufactured experimental sample in the open state the insertion loss is no more than −0.69 dB and the reflection loss is −28.35 dB, and in the closed state the isolation value is at least −54.77 dB at a central resonant frequency of 3.6 GHz. For the second in the open state the value of the insertion loss is no more than −0.67 dB and the reflection loss is −20.7 dB, and in the closed state the isolation value is not less than −52.13 dB at the central resonant frequency of 3.4 GHz. In anaerobic digestion (AD), butyrate is degraded by syntrophic consortium, but can accumulate in highly loaded AD systems. The effect of butyrate on the AD process attracts much less attention than propionate or acetate. In this work, an enrichment culture of the thermophilic butyrate-oxidizing syntrophic consortium was obtained by gradually increasing the initial butyrate concentration from 20 to 170 mM. Surprisingly, even the highest butyrate concentration did not significantly inhibit the methanogenic community, and the stage of acetate degradation was the limiting overall rate of the process. At 170 mM butyrate, the bacterial community changed towards the dominance of syntrophic acetate-oxidizing (SAO) bacteria related to Syntrophaceticus (42.9%), Syntrophomonas (26.2%) and Firmicutes (26.2%), while the archaeal community experienced a sharp decrease in the abundance of Methanosarcina thermophila (from 86.0 to 25.0%) and increase in Methanothermobacter thermautotrophicus (from 3.2 to 53.1%) and Methanomassiliicoccus (from 3.2 to 21.9%). Thus, the shift from acetoclastic methanogenesis to SAO coupled to hydrogenotrophic methanogenesis occurred as an adaptive strategy to overcome high acetate (~200 mM) build-up. Bioaugmentation with the obtained enrichment culture was effective in mitigating the butyrate-dominated VFA build-up during the AD of readily biodegradable waste, increasing the methane production rate, methane yield and volatile solids removal by more than 3.5, 6.2 and 2.9 times, respectively. Our study revealed that the thermophilic butyrate-oxidizing consortia as bioaugmented culture could be the potential strategy to alleviate the high organic load and VFA stress of AD. Energy driven technologies and enhanced per-capita waste production have led to the establishment of novel technologies to simultaneously produce fuels as well as treat the wastes. Anaerobic digestion is cost-effective and sustainable process to produce biogas. Biogas is a mixture of CO2, CH4, H2S, is an eco-friendly and inexpensive renewable biofuel. This mixture of gases restricts biogas utilization in vehicular fuel, CHPs, therefore, biogas upgradation becomes a necessary step. Conventional upgradation technologies for example water scrubbing, physical adsorption, chemical adsorption, amine scrubbing, etc. are cost intensive and require high maintenance. Novel technologies like biological methods of biogas upgradation are being investigated and new improvements are made in the conventional methods. This review aims to give a close insight about various technologies of upgradation including, pressure swing, amine scrubbing, membrane separation, cryogenic separation, biological methods, etc., along with the major challenges and limitations. Biogas production involves various types of intricate microbial populations in an anaerobic digester (AD). To understand the anaerobic digestion system better, a broad-based study must be conducted on the microbial population. Deep understanding of the complete metagenomics including microbial structure, functional gene form, similarity/differences, and relationships between metabolic pathways and product formation, could aid in optimization and enhancement of AD processes. With advancements in technologies for metagenomic sequencing, for example, next generation sequencing and high-throughput sequencing, have revolutionized the study of microbial dynamics in anaerobic digestion. This review includes a brief introduction to the basic process of metagenomics research and includes a detailed summary of the various bioinformatics approaches, viz., total investigation of data obtained from microbial communities using bioinformatics methods to expose metagenomics characterization. This includes (1) methods of DNA isolation and sequencing, (2) investigation of anaerobic microbial communities using bioinformatics techniques, (3) application of the analysis of anaerobic microbial community and biogas production, and (4) restriction and prediction of bioinformatics analysis on microbial metagenomics. The review has been concluded, giving a summarized insight into bioinformatic tools and also promoting the future prospects of integrating humungous data with artificial intelligence and neural network software. Spatial separation into acidogenic and methanogenic stages is considered a viable option to ensure process stability, energy efficiency and the better control of key anaerobic digestion (AD) parameters. The elucidation of the optimal modes of two-stage AD for the maximization of the recovery of biofuels (H2 and CH4) is still an urgent task, the main optimization criteria being the highest energy yield (EY) and energy production rate (EPR). In this work, a response surface methodology was used for an optimization of energy production from the two-stage mesophilic–thermophilic AD of cheese whey (CW). Three dilution rates of CW, providing values of 10.9, 14.53 and 21.8 g for the chemical oxygen demand (COD)/L in the influent and three hydraulic retention times (HRTs) (1, 2 and 3 days) in methanogenic biofilters at a constant HRT in an acidogenic biofilter of 0.42 days, were tested to optimize the EY and EPR. The desirability approach produced combined optimum conditions as follows: the dilution rate of the CW provided 17.58 g COD/L (corresponding to OLR of 6.5 g COD/(L·day)) in the influent and a HRT in the methanogenic biofilter of 2.28 days, both of which provided a maximum EPR of 80.263 kJ/(L·day) and EY of 9.56 kJ/g COD, with an overall desirability value of 0.883. Dark fermentation (DF) is a promising process for mitigating environmental pollution and producing "green" H2. However, wider implementation and scaling of this technology is hampered by insufficient process efficiency. In this work, for the first time, the effect of innovative pretreatment of cheese whey (CW) in a vortex layer apparatus (VLA) on characteristics and DF of CW was studied. Pretreatment in VLA resulted in a heating of the CW, slight increase in pH, volatile fatty acids, iron, and reduction in fat, sugar, and chemical oxygen demand (COD). The biochemical hydrogen potential test and analysis of H2 production kinetics confirmed the significant potential of using VLA in enhancement of dark fermentative H2 production. The maximum potential H2 yield (202.4 mL H2/g COD or 3.4 mol H2/mol hexose) was obtained after pretreatment in VLA for 45 s and was 45.8% higher than the control. The maximum H2 production rate after 5 and 45 s of pretreatment was 256.5 and 237.2 mL H2/g COD/d, respectively, which is 8.06 and 7.46 times higher than in the control. The lag phase was more than halved as a function of the pretreatment time. The pretreatment time positively correlated with the total final concentration of Fe2+ and Fe3+ and negatively with the lag phase, indicating a positive effect of pretreatment in VLA on the start of H2 production. Concrete is mainly employed as a construction material. Due to the manufacturing of cement and the extent of concrete usage, numerous environmental issues and water suction have presented challenges. There is an immediate need to overcome these problematic issues by substituting natural resources with wastes and by-products of different biological processes in the production of concrete in order to make green concrete. Green concrete provides a relatively low-impact material to satisfy potential concrete demand and offers a cheaper, robust and highly reliable alternative that could fulfil future construction requirements in an environmentally safer way. The present review highlights the possible use of waste residues of agricultural origin from cereal farming in concrete as alternative materials to cement, fine aggregate and fiber reinforcement. The review also considers appropriate methods of treatment, the selection of residual resources and the blending ratios that may allow the development of next-generation green concrete with better physicochemical and mechanical properties. It also explores in-depth studies and the wider range of innovations in cereal farming residues for appropriate use in green construction for environmental sustainability. Green concrete could be an alternative material that could replace those used in conventional methods of construction and help make a further step towards environmental sustainability and a circular bioeconomy. Featured Application: The results obtained can be used to optimize the process of anaerobic bioconversion of organic waste in the Russian Federation. Anaerobic digestion (AD) is a promising option to obtain renewable energy in the form of biogas and reduce the anthropogenic impact on the environment. In recent years there has been increasing interest in using pressurized digesters to improve the quality of biogas. However, maintaining high overpressure increases the requirements for the explosion safety of digesters. Consequently, there are natural limitations in the available technologies and facilities suitable for full-scale operation. In this work, we aimed to evaluate the possibility of using overpressure in the digester to improve the efficiency of codigestion of common municipal organic waste–sewage sludge and the organic fraction of municipal solid waste. Three levels of moderate excess pressure (100, 150 and 200 kPa) were used to meet requirements of existing block-modular anaerobic bioreactors based on railway tanks, which are widely utilized for AD in the Russian Federation. There was no significant change in methane content in biogas (65% ± 3%) at different values of overpressure, hydraulic retention time (HRT) and organic loading rate (OLR). The maximum methane and energy production rates (2.365 L/(L·day) and 94.27 kJ/(L·day), respectively) were obtained at an overpressure of 200 kPa, HRT of 5 days and OLR of 14 kg VS/(m3·day). However, the maximum methane yield (202.44 mL/g VS), energy yield (8.07 kJ/g VS) and volatile solids (VS) removal (63.21%) were recorded at an overpressure of 150 kPa, HRT of 7 days and OLR of 10.4 kg VS/(m3·day). The transition of livestock production to industrial processes and the concentration of animals associated with this process on large farms and complexes has caused a sharp increase in the volume of manure that must be disposed of without pollution. One of the ways of processing organic waste (biomass) is its anaerobic digestion in biogas plants through the vital activity of microorganisms (methanogenesis). Biogas obtained using microbiological processing of biomass can be used as a raw material for heat and electric energy. Annually, 0.17% of the total livestock manure produced at Russian agricultural enterprisesis used for biogas production. The main component of a biogas plant is a manure fermentation reactor, the required volume of which is determined by the daily output of manure from the livestock farm, the temperature and the hydraulic retention time of treatment. This research explored thermal energy consumption of biogas plants, using the example of a biogas plant of a modular design that depended on the average annual outdoor temperature. Based on the calculations, the thermophilic mode was found to be more energy-efficient than the mesophilic one; thus, with the thermophilic mode, the specific energy consumption needed for the plant was lower at the average annual outdoor temperatures of all the constituent entities of the Russian Federation. Two-stage anaerobic digestion (AD) is a promising method of converting organic waste into clean and sustainable energy. This work aimed to study the efficiency of a two-stage AD system with the production of hydrogen at the first acidogenic stage and methane in an electromethanogenic reactor. Two types of biocathodes based on carbon cloth were used in the electromethanogenic reactor: with and without retention of biomass on the electrode surface. A high applied voltage continuously supplied to the pair of electrodes was automatically maintained at 2.5 V. Hydrogen yield (0.11 NL/g volatile solids (VS) init or 2 mol H 2 /mol hexose) and hydrogen content in biogas (52%) were relatively high, even despite the extremely low pH (∼4.0). Improved retention of biomass on the surface of the carbon cloth-based biocathode led to greater stability of the AD process (no water electrolysis was observed) and a significant increase in the efficiency of electromethanogenesis, including the methane yield (by 40.5% up to 0.39 NL/g VS init), volumetric methane production rate (by 38.8% up to 1.16 NL/L/d) and current density (by 233% up to 0.56 A/m2). • T= 57.5 °C and pH ∼4 completely suppressed methanogenesis in the acidogenic reactor. • 2 mol H2/mol glucose during continuous dark fermentation of OF-MSW is achieved. • Better biomass attachment to the biocathode increased the current density by 233%. • Increase in CH4 yield by 40.5% and volumetric CH4 production rate by 38.8%. • A physical barrier is an effective tool to retain biomass on the biocathode surface. Preliminary preparation of waste for anaerobic digestion at thermophilic temperature conditions is the most energy-intensive stage of the process of anaerobic bioconversion of production and consumption waste organic matter; therefore, the search for ways to reduce energy consumption at this stage remains an urgent task. The article proposes a technological solution to maintain the temperature regime of the digester operation due to the utilization of existing waste low-grade energy sources using a compression heat pump. The flow diagram of the experimental biogas plant is shown, and a description of its operation is given. The dependences of the absolute and specific rates of heating of the influent and cooling of the effluent on the initial temperature of the effluent are given. This paper addresses Very large‐scale integration (VLSI) placement optimization, which is important because of the rapid development of VLSI design technologies. The goal of this study is to develop a hybrid algorithm for VLSI placement. The proposed algorithm includes a sequential combination of a genetic algorithm and an evolutionary algorithm. It is commonly known that local search algorithms, such as random forest, hill climbing, and variable neighborhoods, can be effectively applied to NP‐hard problem‐solving. They provide improved solutions, which are obtained after a global search. The scientific novelty of this research is based on the development of systems, principles, and methods for creating a hybrid (combined) placement algorithm. The principal difference in the proposed algorithm is that it obtains a set of alternative solutions in parallel and then selects the best one. Nonstandard genetic operators, based on problem knowledge, are used in the proposed algorithm. An investigational study shows an objective‐function improvement of 13%. Featured Application: The results obtained can be used to optimize the production of biohydrogen from highly concentrated liquid waste, such as cheese whey. This article presents the results of the start-up of continuous production of biohydrogen from cheese whey (CW) in an anaerobic filter (AF) and anaerobic fluidized bed (AFB) with a polyurethane carrier. Heat and acid pretreatments were used for the inactivation of hydrogen-scavengers in the inoculum (mesophilic and thermophilic anaerobic sludge). Acid pretreatment was effective for thermophilic anaerobic sludge to suppress methanogenic activity, and heat treatment was effective for mesophilic anaerobic sludge. Maximum specific yields of hydrogen, namely 178 mL/g chemical oxygen demand (COD) and 149 mL/g COD for AFB and AF, respectively, were obtained at the hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 4.5 days and organic load rate (OLR) of 6.61 kg COD/(m3 day). At the same time, the maximum hydrogen production rates of 1.28 and 1.9 NL/(L day) for AF and AFB, respectively, were obtained at the HRT of 2.02 days and OLR of 14.88 kg COD/(m3 day). At the phylum level, the dominant taxa were Firmicutes (65% in AF and 60% in AFB), and at the genus level, Lactobacillus (40% in AF and 43% in AFB) and Bifidobacterium (24% in AF and 30% in AFB). Featured Application: Here we establish a strategy for recovering the methanogenic activity in acidified reactors by PAM-forced flocculation. Excessive accumulation of volatile fatty acids (VFA) is one of the major factors destabilizing methanogenic digestion of organic wastes in anaerobic bioreactors. Existing methods of stabilization of this process are mostly expensive and labor-intensive, often requiring removal of a considerable portion of acidified biomass from the bioreactor. We propose a method for methanogenesis restoration in such soured reactors by the addition of a cationic polyacrylamide flocculant (PAM) at 20 mg/g total solids. After flocculant addition, mixing should be minimized to prolong the existence of the floccules formed in the presence of the flocculant. While partial microbial degradation of the polyacrylamide flocculant was observed during the thermophilic anaerobic process, complete PAM mineralization did not occur. Significant inhibition of anaerobic processes, primarily in the activity of syntrophic propionate-oxidizing bacteria, was observed at PAM concentrations above 40 mg/g total solids. However the decline by Russian foreign ministry officials to return the archive of Walter Rathenau has caused discomfort between the two countries.

According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), only a tiny fraction of the full potential of energy from biomass is currently exploited in the world. Biogas is a good source of energy and heat, and a clean fuel. Converting it to biomethane creates a product that combines all the benefits of natural gas with zero greenhouse gas emissions. This is important given that the methane contained in biogas is a more potent greenhouse gas than carbon dioxide (CO2). The total amount of CO2 emission avoided due to the installation of biogas plants is around 3380 ton/year, as 1 m3 of biogas corresponds to 0.70 kg of CO2 saved. In Russia, despite the huge potential, the development of bioenergy is rather on the periphery, due to the abundance of cheap hydrocarbons and the lack of government support. Based on the data from an agro-industrial plant located in Central Russia, the authors of the article demonstrate that biogas technologies could be successfully used in Russia, provided that the Russian Government adopted Western-type measures of financial incentives.
