Abstract In this article, we aim at the prediction of possible locations of already defunct historical objects with a defensive function (HODFs) in Slovakia, which have not been found and documented so far, using three machine learning methods. Specifically, we used the support vector machine, k-nearest neighbors, and random forest algorithms, which were trained based on the following five factors influencing the possible occurrence of HODFs: elevation, distance from a river, distance from a settlement, lithological rock type, and type of representative geoecosystems. Training and testing datasets were based on a database of already documented 605 HODFs, which were divided into 70% of training samples and 30% of testing samples. All of the three models reached the AUC-ROC value over 0.74 based on the testing dataset. The best performance was recorded by the random forest predictive model with the AUC-ROC value equal to 0.79. The results of the random forest model were also validated with the recently documented HODFs via the archeological research.

Old plant communities are of utmost importance for nature conservation, carbon sequestration, as well as gene pool maintenance. Shrub populations occurring in extreme environments beyond abiotic tree-lines provide diverse ecosystem services and have potential as proxy archives because they often inhabit areas with scarce and short instrumental records. We provide dendrochronological insight into one such population made up of prostrate Juniperus communis shrubs in the northern Scandinavian tundra (Norway), growing on a competition-free boulder field. We dated and provided a growth chronology of the oldest living shrub population (190 ± 148 years) from Scandinavia with the oldest individual being 683 years old. This is a conservative estimate, as shrubs in extreme environments do not form even a single row of cells in some years. The cross-dating issues of poorly growing shrubs do not fully allow to rely on climate sensitivity of the juniper population studied, although the species' potential for dendroclimatological reconstructions is generally considered high, also because the common juniper is an abundant woody species distributed globally. Old populations present an important gene source in plant recruitment, particularly in the context of the present environmental change.

The primary objective of this study is to delve into transnational projects conducted between 2014 and 2020, with a strong emphasis on environmental quality. Our focus is directed toward projects that encompass either eco-innovation or feature elements intrinsic to a circular economy. To achieve this goal, we introduce a pioneering analytical framework tailored to dissect transnational projects, which intricately interweaves the diverse dimensions of environmental quality and innovation, facilitating a comparative assessment across various program classifications. Our approach aligns with the overarching mission of the four flagship initiatives, in which we evaluate the combined impacts on sustainability and innovation. This evaluation considers three fundamental factors: (1) resource allocation, (2) innovation type, and (3) infusion of eco-innovation or circular economy elements. Our methodology unfolds through a systematic, step-by-step progression. First, we meticulously handpick programs, specifically Interreg, Horizon, and Life projects, within the scope of TSG3 (Environmental Quality). Each of these programs corresponds to one of the following four flagship initiatives: (1) overseeing and managing marine species, (2) fostering sustainable development in coastal and maritime zones, (3) safeguarding and elevating natural habitats and terrestrial ecosystems, and (4) formulating transnational contingency strategies for maritime accidents. Through an exhaustive review, we identify projects that either directly or indirectly champion eco-innovation or other facets of the circular economy. Concurrently, we uncover broader manifestations of innovation, eco-innovation, and circular economy principles. Employing the Oslo Manual as a guide, we methodically categorize these innovations into the product, process, organizational, and marketing domains. In the timeframe under scrutiny, a relatively modest subset of projects embraced eco-innovations and practices aligned with the circular economy. Our findings culminate in the formulation of practical implications to invigorate the integration of these dimensions.

Background. Booster doses of SARS-CoV-2 mRNA vaccines are commonly used in kidney transplant recipients (KTRs). However, there is uncertainty regarding the waning of vaccination responses and immunological safety in KTRs. Methods. A total of 123 KTRs were included in the final analysis of this prospective observational cohort study. The aim was to evaluate the immunogenicity and immunological safety. SARS-CoV-2 antispike IgG antibodies and anti-HLA antibodies were measured at baseline and then at months 3, 6, and 12 after vaccination with the first booster dose (ie, the third vaccine dose). Antibodies against S1 and S2 subunits of SARS-CoV-2 were evaluated using an immunochemiluminescent assay (cutoff 9.5 AU/mL, sensitivity 91.2%, and specificity 90.2%). Anti-HLA antibodies were analyzed using single-antigen bead technology. Results. Seroconversion was reached in 65% of KTRs previously nonresponding to 2-dose mRNA vaccination; the overall seroconversion rate 3 mo after the first booster dose was 83%. Vaccination induced a durable humoral response, and the antibody levels were stable during the 12-mo study follow-up. Higher age (exponentiated beta coefficient [eβ] 0.97; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.943-0.997) and a full dose of mycophenolate (eβ 0.296; 95% CI, 0.089-0.984) were negatively associated with SARS-CoV-2 IgG antibody levels, whereas better graft function (eβ1.021; 95% CI, 1.005-1.037) was associated positively. There were no systematic signs of anti-HLA antibody development after vaccination. However, during the follow-up, there was a nonsignificant signal of an increase in anti-HLA antibodies in those who developed COVID-19. Conclusions. Additional booster doses of SARS-CoV-2 mRNA vaccines induce durable antibody response even in a large subset of previous nonresponders and are not associated with the risk of allosensitization. Furthermore, a signal linking COVID-19 to the development of anti-HLA antibodies was observed, and this should be confirmed and further examined (NCT05483725).

A total of 75 (59–69 annually) waterbird species with 129 541–166 543 ( =146 567) individuals were recorded during the January censuses in 2019–2022 in Slovakia. There were found no significant differences in species richness between the years. The most abundant species were Anas platyrhynchos (44.5–53.9% of all registered birds), Anser albifrons (6.8–17.7%) and Aythya fuligula (8.8–10.8%). A. platyrhynchos and A. fuligula were also the species with the lowest interannual variability in the number of individuals recorded. On the other hand, Calidris alpina, C. minuta, Cygnus columbianus, Hydrocoloeus minutus and Numenius arquata were registered only in one year, and C. minuta and C. columbianus were recorded for the first time in Slovakia in January. The overall wintering waterbird assemblage can be considered stable in terms of bird numbers in 2019–2022. However, several species (Aix galericulata, A. sponsa, Alopochen aegyptiaca, Mareca penelope and M. strepera) showed an increase in wintering individuals.

In 2022, 53 ringers ringed altogether 73 148 birds, what is the highest number of ringed birds till now in Slovakia. Of them only 6 437 were ringed the nestlings. Altogether 153 species were ringed. The five most numerous ringed species were Great Tit (Parus major, 8 960 ind.), Blackcap (Sylvia atricapilla, 7 652 individuals), Barn Swallow (Hirundo rustica, 6 809 ind.), European Robin (Erithacus rubecula, 6 032 ind.) and Blue Tit (Cyanistes caeruleus, 5 330 ind.). Altogether 660 abroad recoveries were registered, out of them were 260 individuals ringed abroad and re-trapped in Slovakia, and 400 individuals ringed in Slovakia re-trapped abroad.

Abstract This work deals with the fabrication of one low density steel by mixing AISI S2 tool steel and AlSi10Mg powders using powder-based directed energy deposition (P-DED) technique. Two approaches of mixing powders were compared-continuous mixing during the process (in-situ) and mixing the powder prior to the process (premixed). The P-DED sample was characterised by a variety of techniques such as optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, electron backscatter diffraction, X-ray diffraction, and hardness measurement. Our findings demonstrate the successful achievement of steel with a 8 wt. % AlSi10Mg addition when two dissimilar powders are premixed, resulting in approximately 12% reduction in the density of S2 steel. Optimizing the powder feed rate and the ratio of AlSi10Mg powder contribute to an improvement of printability, eliminating materials separation, leading to a homogenous deposited part. Compared to the in-situ mixing case, the premixed process within the current process window generates a more homogeneous microstructure consisting of three phases: Ferrite, Fe3Al and Fe3AlC carbide. Whereas, the in-situ sample exhibits only two phases Ferrite and Fe3Al. The hardness of the premixed sample is found to be slightly higher compared to the in-situ sample.

(1) Background: The aim of this study was to compare the cytotoxicity of selected resin-modified materials used in direct contact with the dental pulp (TheraCal LC, TheraCal PT, and ApaCal ART) with calcium silicate cement (Biodentine). (2) Methods: The mouse fibroblast Balb/3T3 cell line and the extracts of tested materials in four concentrations were used for the testing. An MTT assay was performed in three independent experiments with six replicates for each concentration of tested material. The cell viability (%) and cytotoxicity were expressed (cytotoxic effect is considered in cases where the cell viability is lower than 70%). The mean of the cell viability and the standard deviation were expressed for each material at all concentrations. ANOVA and Dunnet’s post hoc tests were used for the statistical analysis. All of these tests were performed at the 0.05 significance level. (3) Results: At all concentrations, the cell viability was statistically significantly lower (p ≤ 0.002) for all tested materials compared to Biodentine. ApaCal ART showed a high level of cytotoxicity at all concentrations (cell viability lower than 47.71%, p < 0.0001). The same result was found for TheraCal LC at concentrations of 100%, 50% and 25% and TheraCal PT at concentrations of 100% and 50%. TheraCal LC at a 10% concentration (cell viability 68.18%) and TheraCal PT at a 25% concentration (cell viability 60.63%) indicated potential cytotoxicity. TheraCal PT at a 10% concentration was not found to be cytotoxic (cell viability 79.18%, p = 0.095). (4) Conclusion: The resin-modified calcium silicate and calcium phosphate materials showed higher cytotoxic potential, so they should be used with caution when in direct contact with the dental pulp.

Ancient DNA research in the past decade has revealed that European population structure changed dramatically in the prehistoric period (14,000–3000 years before present, YBP), reflecting the widespread introduction of Neolithic farmer and Bronze Age Steppe ancestries. However, little is known about how population structure changed from the historical period onward (3000 YBP - present). To address this, we collected whole genomes from 204 individuals from Europe and the Mediterranean, many of which are the first historical period genomes from their region (e.g. Armenia and France). We found that most regions show remarkable inter-individual heterogeneity. At least 7% of historical individuals carry ancestry uncommon in the region where they were sampled, some indicating cross-Mediterranean contacts. Despite this high level of mobility, overall population structure across western Eurasia is relatively stable through the historical period up to the present, mirroring geography. We show that, under standard population genetics models with local panmixia, the observed level of dispersal would lead to a collapse of population structure. Persistent population structure thus suggests a lower effective migration rate than indicated by the observed dispersal. We hypothesize that this phenomenon can be explained by extensive transient dispersal arising from drastically improved transportation networks and the Roman Empire’s mobilization of people for trade, labor, and military. This work highlights the utility of ancient DNA in elucidating finer scale human population dynamics in recent history.

Tropospheric ozone (O3) increased globally in the 20th century, contributes to climate change and can have adverse effects on terrestrial ecosystems. The response of forest vegetation to ozone is modulated by species- and site-specific factors and visible foliar symptoms (VFS) are the only direct evidence of ozone effects on vegetation. VFS have been observed and reproduced under (semi-) controlled conditions and their field assessment has been largely harmonized in Europe. We analyzed ozone concentration and VFS data as measured at (respectively) 118 and 91 intensive monitoring sites of the International Co-Operative Programme on Assessment and Monitoring of Air Pollution Effects on Forests (ICP Forests) spanning over five European biogeographic regions from 2005 to 2018. Average values for VFS were calculated accounting for the number of species present and their observed frequency. The duration of slow-wave sleep (SWS) is related to the reported sleep quality and to the important variables of mental and physical health. The internal cues to end an episode of SWS are poorly understood. One such internal cue is the initiation of a body movement, which is detectable as electromyographic (EMG) activity in sleep-electroencephalography (EEG). In the present study, we characterized the termination of SWS episodes by movement to explore its potential as a biomarker. To this end, we characterized the relation between the occurrence of SWS termination by movement and individual characteristics (age, sex), SWS duration and spectral content, chronotype, depression, medication, overnight memory performance, and, as a potential neurological application, epilepsy. We analyzed 94 full-night EEG-EMG recordings (75/94 had confirmed epilepsy) in the video-EEG monitoring unit of the EpiCARE Centre Salzburg, Austria. Segments of SWS were counted and rated for their termination by movement or not through the visual inspection of continuous EEG and EMG recordings. Multiple linear regression was used to predict the number of SWS episodes that ended with movement by depression, chronotype, type of epilepsy (focal, generalized, no epilepsy, unclear), medication, gender, total duration of SWS, occurrence of seizures during the night, occurrence of tonic-clonic seizures during the night, and SWS frequency spectra. Furthermore, we assessed whether SWS movement termination was related to overnight memory retention. According to multiple linear regression, patients with overall longer SWS experienced more SWS episodes that ended with movement (t = 5.64; p = 0.001). No other variable was related to the proportion of SWS that ended with movement, including no epilepsy-related variable. A small sample (n = 4) of patients taking Sertraline experienced no SWS that ended with movement, which was significant compared to all other patients (t = 8.00; p < 0.001) and to n = 35 patients who did not take any medication (t = 4.22; p < 0.001). While this result was based on a small subsample and must be interpreted with caution, it warrants replication in a larger sample with and without seizures to further elucidate the role of the movement termination of SWS and its potential to serve as a biomarker for sleep continuity and for medication effects on sleep.

Cybersecurity research demands continuous monitoring of the dynamic threat landscape to detect novel attacks. Researchers and security professionals often deploy honeypot networks to intercept and examine real attack data. However, due to the volume and variety of the collected data, it is very challenging for security analysts to investigate the attacks, compare their characteristics and infer their potential connections. To this end, we propose a novel graph-based cyberattack model for storing, analyzing, and visualizing honeynet-captured attacks as the main contribution of our work. Our model enables attack graph analysis and presents the attack data analogous to the Cyber Kill Chain framework to enable intuitive visualizations. We construct the attack graph by decomposing the intercepted attacks into a set of unique entities (represented as nodes) and actions (represented as edges) and merge them into a global attack graph. We develop a user-centric, interactive attack analysis and visualization tool that leverages the proposed model to aid the heuristic cyberattack investigation. We describe the design and technical implementation of the developed model and visual-interactive tool in detail. Finally, we demonstrate the developed tools and validate the model in an analysis of real-world attack data captured on our own distributed honeypot platform. We use the attack model and (sub)graph visualizations to depict attack topologies, identify recurring attackers, and quantify detected malware types. We also leverage graph data science algorithms to uncover and rank malware distribution networks, reveal hidden links between the attackers, and cluster the attack entities to identify potential botnets.

The five most numerous ringed species were Blackcap (Sylvia atricapilla, 7 416 individuals), Great Tit (Parus major, 7 158 ind. ), Barn Swallow (Hirundo rustica, 7 081 ind.), European robin (Erithacus rubecula, 5 065 ind.) and Eurasian Siskin (Carduelis spinus, 4 630 ind.). The list of the top five species and their numbers were similar to previous years. Altogether 686 abroad recoveries were registered, out of them were 342 individuals ringed abroad and re-trapped in Slovakia, and 344 individuals ringed in Slovakia re-trapped abroad.

In the last fifty years, globalization and urbanization have significantly changed our lifestyles and our eating habits. We live hectic lifestyles and are exposed to many stressful situations every day, we consume readymade, quickly prepared food, carbonated and alcoholic beverages. All of this is accompanied by the food industry, which also acidifies all the foods to prolong their shelflife. As a consequence of bad eating habits, consuming food when you should rest, stress, but also the activities of the food industry, there has been an epidemic of reflux disease. Part of this disease is laryngopharyngeal reflux, a disease characterized by the return of gastric contents to the throat and surrounding organs, which leads to hoarseness, coughing, swallowing and breathing difficulty, and ultimately the development of benign and / or malignant changes in the larynx. In most patients, pepsin plays a key role in developing changes in the larynx and other organs, and its acidic medium serves to maintain proteolytic activity. In addition to pepsin, bile acid salts and other gastroduodenal proteins may play a role in the development of inflammatory changes in the mucosa of the upper aerodigestive tract. In most cases, we start laryngopharyngeal reflux therapy with medication, however this is wrong and ineffective. Therefore, it is important to emphasize that treatment must always begin with a change in diet, lifestyle and stress regulation. The treatment of laryngopharyngeal reflux must be individual and should involve a multidisciplinary team with a nutritionist, a psychologist and a psychiatrist.

The importance and value of real-world data in healthcare cannot be overstated because it offers a valuable source of insights into patient experiences. Traditional patient-reported experience and outcomes measures (PREMs/PROMs) often fall short in addressing the complexities of these experiences due to subjectivity and their inability to precisely target the questions asked. In contrast, diary recordings offer a promising solution. They can provide a comprehensive picture of psychological well-being, encompassing both psychological and physiological symptoms. This study explores how using advanced digital technologies, i.e., automatic speech recognition and natural language processing, can efficiently capture patient insights in oncology settings. We introduce the MRAST framework, a simplified way to collect, structure, and understand patient data using questionnaires and diary recordings. The framework was validated in a prospective study with 81 colorectal and 85 breast cancer survivors, of whom 37 were male and 129 were female. Overall, the patients evaluated the solution as well made; they found it easy to use and integrate into their daily routine. The majority (75.3%) of the cancer survivors participating in the study were willing to engage in health monitoring activities using digital wearable devices daily for an extended period. Throughout the study, there was a noticeable increase in the number of participants who perceived the system as having excellent usability. Despite some negative feedback, 44.44% of patients still rated the app’s usability as above satisfactory (i.e., 7.9 on 1–10 scale) and the experience with diary recording as above satisfactory (i.e., 7.0 on 1–10 scale). Overall, these findings also underscore the significance of user testing and continuous improvement in enhancing the usability and user acceptance of solutions like the MRAST framework. Overall, the automated extraction of information from diaries represents a pivotal step toward a more patient-centered approach, where healthcare decisions are based on real-world experiences and tailored to individual needs. The potential usefulness of such data is enormous, as it enables better measurement of everyday experiences and opens new avenues for patient-centered care.

Crop classification is an important task in remote sensing with many applications, such as estimating yields, detecting crop diseases and pests, and ensuring food security. In this study, we combined knowledge from remote sensing, machine learning, and agriculture to investigate the application of transfer learning with a transformer model for variable length satellite image time series (SITS). The objective was to produce a map of agricultural land, reduce required interventions, and limit in-field visits. Specifically, we aimed to provide reliable agricultural land class predictions in a timely manner and quantify the necessary amount of reference parcels to achieve these outcomes. Our dataset consisted of Sentinel-2 satellite imagery and reference crop labels for Slovenia spanning over years 2019, 2020, and 2021. We evaluated adaptability through fine-tuning in a real-world scenario of early crop classification with limited up-to-date reference data. The base model trained on a different year achieved an average F1 score of 82.5% for the target year without having a reference from the target year. To increase accuracy with a new model trained from scratch, an average of 48,000 samples are required in the target year. Using transfer learning, the pre-trained models can be efficiently adapted to an unknown year, requiring less than 0.3% (1500) samples from the dataset. Building on this, we show that transfer learning can outperform the baseline in the context of early classification with only 9% of the data after 210 days in the year.

Abstract To minimize neuromuscular electrical stimulation during electroporation-based treatments, the replacement of long monophasic pulses with bursts of biphasic high-frequency pulses in the range of microseconds was suggested in order to reduce muscle contraction and pain sensation due to pulse application. This treatment modality appeared under the term high-frequency electroporation (HF-EP), which can be potentially used for some clinical applications of electroporation such as electrochemotherapy, gene electrotransfer, and tissue ablation. In cardiac tissue ablation, which utilizes irreversible electroporation, the treatment is being established as Pulsed Field Ablation. While the reduction of muscle contractions was confirmed in multiple in vivo studies, the reduction of pain sensation in humans was not confirmed yet, nor was the relationship between muscle contraction and pain sensation investigated. This is the first study in humans examining pain sensation using biphasic high-frequency electroporation pulses. Twenty-five healthy individuals were subjected to electrical stimulation of the tibialis anterior muscle with biphasic high-frequency pulses in the range of few microseconds and both, symmetric and asymmetric interphase and interpulse delays. Our results confirm that biphasic high-frequency pulses with a pulse width of 1 or 2 µs reduce muscle contraction and pain sensation as opposed to currently used longer monophasic pulses. In addition, interphase and interpulse delays play a significant role in reducing the muscle contraction and/or pain sensation. The study shows that the range of the optimal pulse parameters may be increased depending on the prerequisites of the therapy. However, further evaluation of the biphasic pulse protocols presented herein is necessary to confirm the efficiency of the newly proposed HF-EP.

Objective: To present the impact of national lockdown due to COVID-19 pandemic on the incidence of persistent secretory otitis media in children. Patients: Children aged from four to 13 years who were surgically treated from 1st January 2017 to 31th December 2020 at the University Department of Otolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery, University Hospital Center Osijek. Methods: Patients underwent otomicroscopy, tympanometry, tone audiometry and fiberendoscopy of the epipharynx. After confirmation of the existence of secretory otitis the children were treated surgically, using adenotomy and myringotomy by inserting ventilation tubes in the equilateral ear. Results: This study included 107 children who were surgically treated with adenotomy and myringotomy by inserting ventilation tubes. The results showed a significant decline in the number of operations in 2020 compared to the previous three years, presumably due to national lockdown closures. We recorded the largest difference comparing 2018 and 2020, when the number of operations decreased by 87%. Conclusions: Drastic reduction of activities during the national lockdown closure, schooling from home and emphasizing the proper and regular implementation of personal hygiene have contributed to reducing the incidence of one of the most common infections in children. Lower frequency of acute otitis media has a positive effect on reducing the frequency of development of secretory otitis in children. Compared to the previous three years, there has been a significant decline in the number of children requiring surgical treatment. This is the first retrospective study on the impact of national lockdown on reducing the need for surgical treatment of persistent secretory otitis in children.

In the contemporary business environment, startups have emerged as significant employment contributors, particularly in mature startup ecosystems, such as the United States. However, Europe, with a particular focus on Slovenia, represents an unexplored avenue in this area. As startups make the transition to scaleups, they face numerous challenges. Our study aims to comprehend the dynamics that affect startups during this crucial phase, focusing on the relationship between entrepreneurial motivations, the startup ecosystem, and their strategic adaptability. We undertook a primary survey among Slovenian startup and scaleup companies, and we utilized factor and regression analysis as the primary tools for conducting a thorough data analysis. The research underscores the symbiotic relationship between tailored business strategies, innovation, and growth challenges. To achieve successful transition from startup to scaleup, it is a strategic necessity for businesses to harness their innovative capacities. Our research pioneers the inclusion of Slovenia within the European startup landscape, providing insight into the unique challenges and opportunities inherent to the region. The findings advocate for a holistic approach in the startup ecosystem, reinforcing the significance of a multifaceted support system for these budding enterprises.

Electroporation is used in medicine for drug and gene delivery, and as a nonthermal ablation method in tumor treatment and cardiac ablation. Electroporation involves delivering high-voltage electric pulses to target tissue; however, this can cause effects beyond the intended target tissue like nerve stimulation, muscle contractions and pain, requiring use of sedatives or anesthetics. It was previously shown that adjusting pulse parameters may mitigate some of these effects, but not how these adjustments would affect electroporation’s efficacy. We investigated the effect of varying pulse parameters such as interphase and interpulse delay while keeping the duration and number of pulses constant on nerve stimulation, muscle contraction and assessing pain and electroporation efficacy, conducting experiments on human volunteers, tissue samples and cell lines in vitro. Our results show that using specific pulse parameters, particularly short high-frequency biphasic pulses with short interphase and long interpulse delays, reduces muscle contractions and pain sensations in healthy individuals. Higher stimulation thresholds were also observed in experiments on isolated swine phrenic nerves and human esophagus tissues. However, changes in the interphase and interpulse delays did not affect the cell permeability and survival, suggesting that modifying the pulse parameters could minimize adverse effects while preserving therapeutic goals in electroporation.

In 2020, 57 ringers ringed altogether 62,455 birds, of them 5,531 were nestlings. That number was 5% (2,984) higher compared to 2019. The ringed birds belonged to 161 species. The most numerous ringed species were Blackcap (Sylvia atricapilla, 7,681 ind.), Barn Swallow (Hirundo rustica, 7,536 ind.) Great Tit (Parus major, 6,109 individuals), Blue Tit (Cyanistes caeruleus, 5,463 ind.) and European robin (Erithacus rubecula, 4,704 ind.). Alltogether 710 abroad recoveries were registered, out of them were 293 individuals ringed abroad and re-trapped in Slovakia, 417 individuals ringed in Slovakia re-trapped abroad. The colour ringed schemes in Slovakia are presented here also.

Abstract A large proportion of colorectal carcinomas (CRC) evolve from colorectal adenomas. However, not all individuals with colonic adenomas have a risk of CRC substantially higher than those of the general population. The aim of the study was to determine the differences or similarities of mutation profile among low- and high-grade adenomas and in situ carcinoma with detailed follow up. We have investigated the mutation spectrum of well-known genes involved in CRC (such as APC, BRAF, EGFR, NRAS, KRAS, PIK3CA, POLE, POLD1, SMAD4, PTEN, and TP53) in a large, well-defined series of 96 adenomas and in situ carcinomas using a high-throughput genotyping technique. Besides, the microsatellite instability and APC and MLH1 promoter methylation were studied as well. We observed a high frequency of pathogenic variants in the studied genes. The APC, KRAS and TP53 mutation frequencies were slightly lower in adenoma samples than in in situ carcinoma samples. Further, when we stratified mutation frequency based on the grade, the frequency distribution was as follows: low-grade adenoma—high-grade adenomas—in situ carcinoma: APC gene 42.9–56.0–54.5%; KRAS gene 32.7–32.0–45.5%; TP53 gene 8.2–20.0–18.2%. The occurrence of KRAS mutation was associated with the presence of villous histology and methylation of the APC promoter was significantly associated with the presence of POLE genetic variations. However, no association was noticed with the presence of any singular mutation and occurrence of subsequent adenoma or CRC. Our data supports the multistep model of gradual accumulation of mutations, especially in the driver genes, such as APC, TP53 and KRAS.

This report aimed to investigate the relationship after successful left‐sided stapedotomy and postoperative benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) due to vitamin D deficiency. A 56‐year‐old woman presented with a complaint of progressive hearing loss and tinnitus in the left ear without dizziness. A successful left‐sided stapedotomy was performed, confirming the diagnosis of otosclerosis and closing the air‐bone gap to less than 10 dB. Seven days after the stapedotomy, the patient reported dizziness, usually when turning to her left side in the bed. An electrophysiological assessment was performed to investigate vestibular function. Dix Hallpike maneuver showed a typical response, about 5 seconds after repositioning the head, and geotropic, torsional rotary nystagmus of about 30 seconds was registered. Vitamin D deficiency in serum was found. Complete symptom remission was achieved after 7-day-treatment with Epley’s maneuver. As a postoperative vertigo complication, BPPV often remains unrecognized after stapes surgery. Canalith repositioning maneuver is treatment for BPPV. Determining serum levels of total calcium and vitamin D may play a significant role in monitoring and reducing the recurrence of dizziness.

The first breeding attempt of the Alpine Swift (Tachymarptis melba) in Slovakia is documented and range and population trend in Europe discussed. Four specimens of the species had appeared during the breeding season 2021 in Michalovce town, SE Slovakia, and a nest with the Alpine Swift eggs was documented on an unaccomplished panel building at a height of 22 m. The Alpine Swifts left the breeding site individually between September 27 and October 18. This breeding may be related to the increase of European population of Alpine Swift.

Alzheimer's Disease (AD) is the most frequent form of degenerative dementia and its early diagnosis is essential for effective treatment. Functional imaging modalities including Single Photon Emission Computed Tomography (SPECT) are often used with such an aim. However, conventional evaluation of SPECT images relies on manual reorientation and visual evaluation of tomographic slices which is time consuming, subjective and therefore prone to error. Our aim is to show an automatic Computer-Aided Diagnosis (CAD) system for improving the early detection of the AD. For this purpose, affine invariant descriptors of 3D SPECT image can be useful. The method consists of four steps: evaluation of invariant descriptors obtained using spherical harmonic analysis, statistical testing of their significance, application of regularized binary index models, and model verification via leave-one-out cross-validation scheme. The second approach is based on Support Vector Machine (SVM) classifier and visualization with use of self-organizing maps. Our approaches were tested on SPECT data from 11 adult patients with definite Alzheimer's disease and 10 adult patients with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) who were used as controls. Most data on the natural history of nonfunctioning adrenal incidentalomas (NFAI) are provided by follow-ups up to 5 years. We conducted a 10.5 (9.1–11.9)-year prospective follow-up study of NFAI in 67 participants (20 (29.9%) males, 47 (70.1%) females) of mean age 57.9 (52.3–63.9) years and BMI 27.42 (24.07–30.56) kg/m2). We also evaluated the associations between baseline BMI and changes of NFAIs’ characteristics at follow-up. Progression to mild autonomous cortisol excess (MACE) was observed in 15 (22 %) patients, with 14 of them having post overnight dexamethasone suppression test (ODST) cortisol between 50 and138 nmol/L and only one > 138 nmol/L. The progression rate was significantly higher in overweight and obese than in normal-weig ht subjects. Patients that developed MACE had a significantly higher baseline mean cortisol after 1 mg ODST. Tumor enlargement ≥10 mm occurred in 8.9% of patients. In comparison with reports of shorter observational periods, we observed a higher growth rate ≥ 10 mm and higher progression rate from NFAI to MACE, particularly in overweight and obese subjects. All tumors had persistent radiological characteristics typical for adrenal adenoma. We concluded that the duration of the follow-up period is an important factor in characterizing the natural history of NFAI. Higher baseline BMI and higher baseline cortisol after ODST might predict the long-term likelihood of progression in hormonal activity. The magnitudes of observed progressions in growth or hormonal activity were clinically ins ignificant. Our long-term follow-up, therefore, clearly supports the general view that a long-term monitoring of patients with NFAI is not necessary.

Blue-green infrastructure (BGI) consists of natural and semi-natural (hence green) decentralized systems for urban stormwater management (hence blue), which, in addition to their primary purpose, provide a variety of shared benefits and ecosystem services. With the exception of a few cities that have adopted strategies for systemic BGI implementation, its use is still sporadic, in the form of isolated best practices, and is absent from Slovenian cities. Due to established spatial planning practices, Slovenian cities have a sufficient amount of relatively evenly distributed green areas, but these are not planned according to BGI principles and therefore their potential for managing stormwater is not utilized (i.e., water-wise multifunctionality). Because urban space management and its associated elements are a multidisciplinary field, we explored the link between spatial planning and water management in international strategic documents and in Slovenian national legislation. Based on a literature review, such connections are promoted at the international level; however, they are not sufficiently integrated in national legislation. Thus, a sectoral approach to water management and urban planning still prevails in Slovenian cities. Four examples of systemic BGI implementation (Rotterdam, Copenhagen, Philadelphia, and Chinese cities) are presented here. They link spatial planning and water management in BGI design and implementation. The results of this analysis were used to develop recommendations on integrating spatial planning and water management that go beyond sectoral urban space management, aiming to facilitate BGI implementation in (Slovenian) cities.

Modro-zelena infrastruktura (MZI) so naravni in polnaravni (zato zelena) decentralizirani sistemi, namenjeni upravljanju padavinskih voda (zato modra) v mestih, ki hkrati opravljajo zelo raznovrstne ekosistemske storitve. Razen v nekaj tujih mestih, kjer so že sprejeli strategije za njihovo sistematično uvedbo, je uvajanje MZI omejeno na zgolj posamezne osamljene primere. To še posebej velja za Slovenijo, kjer uporaba MZI še ni postala pravilo. Zaradi utečenih prostorskonačrtovalskih praks imamo v slovenskih mestih zadosten delež razmeroma enakomerno razporejenih zelenih površin, ki pa niso načrtovane po načelih MZI, zato njihova večfunkcionalnost z vidika voda ni izkoriščena. Ker upravljanje mestnega prostora in pripadajočih prvin spada pod okrilje več strok, nas je zanimala predvsem povezava med prostorskim načrtovanjem in upravljanjem voda v mednarodnih strateških dokumentih in v slovenski zakonodaji. Na podlagi pregledane literature smo lahko sklenili, da je tovrstna povezava predvsem na mednarodni ravni, na nacionalni ravni pa je že šibkejša in je delovanje predvsem na izvedbeni ravni vezano na posamezne sektorje. V nadaljevanju so predstavljeni štirje primeri sistemskega uvajanja MZI v tujini: v Rotterdamu, Københavnu, v izbranih kitajskih mestih in v Filadelfiji, tem je skupno povezovanje med prostorskim načrtovanjem in upravljanjem voda pri načrtovanju MZI. Rezultati analize stanja so bili izhodišče za oblikovanje priporočil, s katerimi je mogoče preseči sektorsko upravljanje mestnega prostora in doseči celovitejše upravljanje voda v (slovenskih) mestih.

Telemedicine is a term that covers all procedures supported by communication technology, which has the purpose of providing health services at a specific spatial distance. This is an area that is developing rapidly and has found particular application in otorhinolaryngology, given that a large number of surgeries are performed with the help of endoscopes and microscopes. Telemedicine also represents a significant advantage during the coronavirus pandemic, both in terms of treating patients and monitoring them more effectively. For the purpose of preparing this article, research published on Scopus, PubMed, Google Scholar, and Google was reviewed using the keywords “telemedicine” and “otorhinolaryngology”. This review article provides a summary and the latest insights in this broad and fast-growing area. The development of telemedicine in Croatia as well as a special review of the application of telemedicine during the coronavirus pandemic is also presented in this article.

This paper presents the major outcomes of the utilization of smart phone applications in the periodical technical inspection process. Road safety is one of the main topics in transportation. Technical defects of vehicles can play an important role in fatal accidents; therefore, periodical vehicle inspection is a common practice amongst many countries across all continents. The authors observed that advancements in smart technologies presented an opportunity to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of vehicle inspections. They specifically focused on the Slovak Republic and described the transition of technical inspections towards smart technologies in this country. The goal was to utilize new technologies and improvements without increasing costs dramatically. The paper discusses the outcomes of the first two years of using this app at every technical inspection station in the Slovak Republic. The smart phones were used not only to help with process management but the novelty is that they also collected data from the sensors and used their own sensors for the vehicle dynamics measurements. One of the important factors is the successful implementation of low cost devices at such a large scale, country wise.

The objective of this paper is to investigate the main characteristics of apple production competitiveness in ten Croatian family farms and their comparison with the most competitive regions for apple production. There are six factors in the analysis and assessment of the competitiveness of apple production: yield per hectare, market access, yield quality, production safety, access to capital and orchard area. We have been researching how satisfied the owners of Croatian family farms are with their competitiveness, according to the stated factors and how they rank in relation to the most competitive world producers. The research was conducted using a survey questionnaire that was distributed online during February 2021 to a sample of ten Croatian family farms with a plantation area of 4 to 20 hectares.

Genska terapija postaja čedalje bolj zanimiva tudi v onkologiji. Med aplikacijami je morda najzanimivejša imunostimulacija. Pripravimo lahko plazmidno DNA, ki nosi zapis za različne imunostimulatorne molekule, ki jih vnesemo v celice tumorjev ali normalnih tkiv. Ta tkiva postanejo proizvajalci teh molekul, ki lahko delujejo lokalno ali pa se izločajo tudi sistemsko v krvni obtok. Ker plazmidna DNA ne prehaja celične membrane, so potrebni dostavni sistemi, virusni ali nevirusni. V naših študijah uporabljamo predvsem nevirusni dostavni sistem – elektroporacijo. Interlevkin 12 (IL-12) je eden od zanimivih citokinov, za katerega je znano protitumorsko delovanje s spodbujanjem imunskega odziva in antiangiogenim delovanjem. Namen projekta SmartGene.si je bil pripraviti plazmid z zapisom za interlevkin 12 (plazmid phIL12) in pripraviti vse potrebno za njegovo klinično testiranje za zdravljenje kožnih tumorjev. V konzorciju smo združili moči s partnerji z akademskega in industrijskega področja. Treba je bilo pripraviti plazmid za uporabo v humani onkologiji po zahtevah Evropske agencije za zdravila (EMA). Za prijavo klinične študije na Javno agencijo za zdravila in medicinske pripomočke (JAZMP) smo morali izvesti tudi vse neklinične raziskave o varnosti in učinkovitosti zdravila. Nato je bilo treba razviti postopek priprave zdravila, zagotoviti primerne prostore za pripravo in izvedbo postopka priprave zdravila. V treh letih smo dosegli vse te zastavljene cilje in dobili dovoljenje za izvajanje klinične študije na kožnih tumorjih, ki ga je izdala JAZMP na osnovi pozitivnega mnenja Komisije Republike Slovenije za medicinsko etiko. Zdaj poteka klinična študija faze I preizkušanja plazmida phIL12 na kožnih tumorjih glave in vratu z namenom preveriti varnost in sprejemljivost genskega elektroprenosa plazmida v tumorje. Cilj študije je prav tako določiti primeren odmerek zdravila, ki bi ga v nadaljnji klinični študiji uporabili kot adjuvantno zdravljenje k ablativnim terapijam, kot sta radioterapija ali elektrokemoterapija.

Like many other aquatic animals, freshwater planarians have also become partners of symbiotic ciliates from the class Oligohymenophorea. In the present study, we explored the hidden diversity and addressed the questionable systematic position of mouthless obligatory gut endosymbionts of freshwater planarians, using the nuclear and mitochondrial SSU rRNA genes. Although all isolated ciliates morphologically corresponded to a single species, molecular analyses suggested the existence of three genetically distinct entities: Haptophrya planariarum, Haptophrya dugesiarum nov. spec., and Haptophrya schmidtearum nov. spec. The two former species share the same planarian host, which indicates a speciation model involving one duplication event without host switching. Such a diversification pattern was recognized also in astome ciliates inhabiting megascolecid and glossoscolecid earthworms. The present multi-gene phylogenies along with the secondary structure of the mitochondrial 16S rRNA molecule, however, challenge the traditional classification of Haptophrya within the subclass Astomatia. Haptophrya very likely evolved from an orphan scuticociliate lineage by the loss of oral apparatus and by the transformation of the thigmotactic field into an adhesive sucker. Since astomy evolved multiple times independently within the Oligohymenophorea, the loss of cell mouth cannot be used as a sole argument for the assignment of Haptophrya to the Astomatia anymore.

In 2019, 86 ringers ringed altogether 59 472 birds, of them 5641 were nestlings. That number was 1,58 % (90) higher compare to 2018. The ringed birds belonged to 151 species. The most numerous ringed species were Barn Swallow (Hirundo rustica, 7 324 ind.) Blackcap (Sylvia atricapilla, 7 212 ind.), Great Tit (Parus major, 5 322 ind.), European robin (Erithacus rubecula, 4 813 ind.), Blue Tit (Cyanistes caeruleus 3 973 ind.). The colour ringed schemes in Slovakia are given. Altogether 553 foreign recoveries were registered, out of them were 193 individuals ringed abroad and re-trapped in Slovakia and, 360 individuals ringed in Slovakia and re-trapped abroad.

Abstract Background Endocrine disorders in patients after heart transplantation (HT) remain understudied. We aimed to assess endocrine profiles and management of HT recipients in the early post- transplant period. Methods We conducted a retrospective cohort study on 123 consecutive HT recipients in the Advanced Heart Failure and Transplantation Programme between 2009 and 2018. All recipients had per-protocol endocrine follow-up within the first postoperative year. The median time to first post-transplant endocrine follow-up was 3 months (IQR 2–4). We assessed the incidence of vitamin D deficiency, bone mineral density, history of low energy fractures, hypogonadism in male recipients, posttransplant diabetes mellitus, and thyroid and parathyroid function. Results We enrolled 22 women and 101 men of median age 57 years (IQR 50–63). Post-transplant diabetes mellitus developed in 14 patients (11.4%). 18 of 25 patients (14.6%) with preexisting type 2 diabetes mellitus required intensification of antidiabetic therapy. 38 male patients (40.4%) had hypogonadism. 5 patients (4.6%) were hypothyroid and 10 (9.3%) latent hyperthyroid. Secondary hyperparathyroidism was present in 19 (17.3%), 25-hydroxyvitamin D deficiency in 64 (54.7%) of patients. Osteoporosis was present in 26 (21.1%), osteopenia in 59 (48.0%) patients. 47 vertebral fractures, 3 hip and 1 humerus fractures occurred in 21 patients. Most of the patients had coincidence of two or three disorders, while less than 5% did not have any endocrine irregularities. All patients received calcium and vitamin D supplements. Forty-six patients (37.4%) were treated with zoledronic acid, 12 (9.8%) with oral bisphosphonates. Two patients were treated with teriparatide. Conclusions The prevalence of multiple endocrine disorders early after heart transplantation is high. Assessment and management of increased fracture risk and all other potentially affected endocrine axes should be considered as a standard of care in this early period.

Papillary thyroid cancer accounts for 80-85% of diagnosed thyroid cancers, while follicular, medullary, and anaplastic cancers are diagnosed significantly less frequently. This study aimed to show the characteristics of malignant thyroid tumors. In this retrospective study, we analyzed data from 320 patients who underwent thyroid surgery from January 2018 to December 2019. We recorded and statistically analyzed basic demographic data, data of the cytological and pathohistological findings, and tumor characteristics (size, multifocality, extrathyroidal and lymphovascular invasion). Thyroid cancer was diagnosed in 95 patients. The incidence of thyroid cancer was higher in women than in men, but without a significant difference (p=0.46). There was a significant difference between preoperative cytological findings and definitive pathohistological diagnosis (p=0.001). There was no significant difference between genders in tumor size, extrathyroidal and lymphovascular invasion, and multifocality. There were significantly more thyroid cancers with a lymphovascular invasion that were less than 2 cm in size (p=0.04). In our opinion, it is important to emphasize the value of early diagnostics and analysis of the malignant tumor characteristics that are major prognostic factors for survival in patients with thyroid cancer.
