In this paper, we consider a bilevel polynomial optimization problem, where the constraint functions of both the upper-level and lower-level problems involve uncertain parameters. We employ the deterministic robust optimization approach to examine the bilevel polynomial optimization problem under data uncertainties by providing lower bound approximations and convergences of sum-of-squares (SOS) relaxations for the robust bilevel polynomial optimization problem. More precisely, we show that under the convexity of the lower-level problem and either the boundedness of the feasible set or the coercivity of the objective function, the global optimal values of SOS relaxation problems are lower bounds of the global optimal value of the robust bilevel polynomial problem and they converge to this global optimal value when the degrees of SOS polynomials in the relaxation problems tend to infinity. Moreover, an application to an electric vehicle charging scheduling problem with renewable energy sources demonstrates that using the proposed SOS relaxation schemes, we obtain more stable optimal values than applying a direct solution approach as the SOS relaxations are capable of solving these models involving data uncertainties in dynamic charging price and weather conditions. The consensus problems of fractional-order multi-agent systems(FOMAS) are investigated under a fixed interaction graph. A consensus protocol that has current and time-delay states is designed. The conception of practical consensus of FOMAS is proposed. The asymptotical consensus condition is obtained by taking advantage of Laplace transform. Furthermore, the practical consensus condition of the FOMAS with the protocol is given by direct derivation. Through numerical simulation, we find that the standard control protocol can not achieve consensus in some situations. This article addresses the problem of synchronization of impulsive networks with switching topologies. A new synchronization framework is established with an emphasis on settling time estimation. The impulsive networks consist of physical nodes and cyber modules. For physical nodes, states are changed impulsively at discrete time instants due to some switching phenomena or unexpected sudden noises. For cyber modules, two cases of switching scenarios are considered for information exchange patterns during specific time intervals. In the first case, cyber modules lose all the communication links with others, resulting in disconnected topologies. Then, a distributed controller is proposed for nodes without intrinsic nonlinear dynamics. A distinguished feature of this controller is its capability to estimate a bound for settling time, beyond which the synchronization with respect to a virtual target is guaranteed. In the second case, cyber modules lose some communication links but build other new ones with the help of a smart communication center to form connected topologies. A distributed controller is further designed for nodes in the presence of intrinsic nonlinear dynamics. Accordingly, a sufficient condition is derived to achieve synchronization with an estimated settling time bound. For both cases, the estimated bounds are able to reveal the relationship between the impulsive strength and the synchronization performance. This article investigates the sliding-mode control design problem for uncertain time-varying delayed systems. A novel non-negative constraints approach is proposed, which can be used to determine the stability of the controlled systems during the sliding motion. A new stability condition is obtained, which is easy to satisfy and verify. The parameters of the sliding-mode surface can be calculated by solving the non-negative constraints-based optimization problem defined in this article. A great deal of attention from various scientific communities has been recently drawn to complex network systems (CNSs), with many profound results established in this active research field. This article provides a state-of-the-art survey on coordination and control of CNSs with switching network topologies, with emphasis on relationships between the switchings among different topology candidates and the network controllability, and between the switchings among different topology candidates and the emergence of coordination behaviors (including synchronization, consensus, and containment) of such CNSs. First, some fundamental properties of CNSs and the essentials of analytical methodologies for the stability of the fixed point of switched dynamical systems are briefly reviewed. Then, network controllability and the emergence of coordination behaviors of CNSs with switching topologies and the corresponding analytical approaches are discussed in detail, where some of the existing results along these topics are presented in a tutorial-like fashion. This article presents a full mathematical proof of the characteristic modeling approach for high-order linear dynamical systems. It explores the nature of the characteristic model in rigorous mathematical forms, also showing why and how the high-order dynamics can be compressed into the lower-order characteristic model. In this paper, characteristic model-based modeling and control approaches for complex dynamical networks based on sampled data are studied. It shows that the characteristic model, in which underline network topological structures are simplified, can provide a straightforward and implicit description for network dynamics. The induced parameter estimation method can further make the model adaptive and purely data-driven. Moreover, a control law based on this model is also proposed to govern the network dynamics. The group consensus problems of heterogeneous multiagent networks with input time delays are investigated in this paper. In this complex networks, the agents’ dynamics are modeled by the first-order and the second-order multiagent systems, where a novel dynamic group consensus protocol is designed through the competitive relationship among the agents. By using matrix theory and the frequency-domain method, some algebraic criteria are theoretically established for reaching a group consensus in the following two cases: 1) with the identical and 2) different input time delays. Meanwhile, the conservative assumptions existed in the relevant literatures are absolutely relaxed, i.e., the in-degree balance and the geometric multiplicity of zero eigenvalue of Laplacian matrix are at least two. In this article, a continuous terminal sliding mode control algorithm is proposed for servo motor systems. A novel full-order terminal sliding mode surface is proposed based on the bilimit homogeneous property, such that the sliding motion is finite-time stable independent of the system's initial condition. A new continuous terminal sliding mode control algorithm is proposed to guarantee that the system states reach the sliding surface in finite-time. Not only the robustness is guaranteed by the proposed controller but also the continuity makes the control algorithm more suitable for the servo mechanical systems. Finally, a numerical example is presented to depict the advantages of the proposed control algorithm. This paper proposes a sampled data-based modeling approach for complex network systems. A compression method, known as characteristic modeling, is used to construct microscopic models from macroscopic observations. Based on this model, a novel control method is also developed to achieve network synchronization. The proposed approach can reduce both the complexity of microscopic dynamics and overall networks. This paper is concerned with the robust stabilization of quantized feedback sliding-mode control (SMC) for a class of uncertain linear systems via an event-triggered approach. By introducing an event-triggered mechanism, the event-triggered state instead of the state itself is quantized. And the generated finite event-triggered quantized state signal is sent through a digital network to the decoder and used for constructing a sliding mode controller to stabilize the uncertain linear systems. The relation among the lower bound of the quantized measurement saturating parameter, the upper bound of the event-triggered threshold parameter and the robust stabilization condition of linear uncertain systems, is first presented. Then, under the relation and by the combination of the proposed event-triggered mechanism for the system state and the discrete on-line adjustment policy for the quantizer sensitivity, the established quantized and event-triggered SMC laws are shown to ensure the reachability of the desired switching surface and global robust stabilization of uncertain linear systems is achieved. This paper is concerned with quantized sliding mode control in the unified delta operator system framework. To solve the quantization measurement saturating problem, a dynamic quantization strategy including discrete on-line open-loop zooming-out and closed-loop zooming-in policies is presented. By analyzing the sign relation between the traditional linear switching function and the quantized linear switching function, a novel quantized sliding mode control method is proposed, and both the amplitude of the control gain and the value of the quantization measurement saturating parameter are reduced compared with previous results. According to the feed-in tariff for encouraging local consumption of photovoltaic (PV) energy, the energy sharing among neighboring PV prosumers in the microgrid could be more economical than the independent operation of prosumers. For microgrids of peer-to-peer PV prosumers, an energy-sharing model with price-based demand response is proposed. First, a dynamical internal pricing model is formulated for the operation of energy-sharing zone, which is defined based on the supply and demand ratio (SDR) of shared PV energy. Moreover, considering the energy consumption flexibility of prosumers, an equivalent cost model is designed in terms of economic cost and users’ willingness. As the internal prices are coupled with SDR in the microgrid, the algorithm and implementation method for solving the model is designed on a distributed iterative way. This paper proposes a control framework, called pulse-modulated intermittent control, which unifies impulsive control and sampled control. Specifically, the concept of pulse function is introduced to characterize the control/rest intervals and the amplitude of the control. By choosing some specified functions as the pulse function, the proposed control scheme can be reduced to sampled control or impulsive control. The proposed control framework is applied to consensus problems of multiagent systems. Using discretization approaches and stability theory, several necessary and sufficient conditions are established to ensure the consensus of the controlled system. The results show that consensus depends not only on the network topology, the sampling period and the control gains, but also the pulse function. Moreover, a lower bound of the asymptotic convergence factor is derived as well. For a given pulse function and an undirected graph, an optimal control gain is designed to achieve the fastest convergence. This paper investigates the iterative learning problem for discrete-time systems with event-triggered scheme and quantization. The event-triggered scheme is firstly considered in the iterative learning controllers to reduce the number of iteration steps to be updated. Control of the superheated steam temperature is a significant technical challenge to coal-fired power plants due to the strong nonlinearity, large inertia and parameter uncertainties with external disturbances. This paper proposes a robust proportion–integration–differentiation (PID) control of the superheated steam temperature with proven stability and the external disturbance rejection. The design is based on the proposed data-driven feedback compensator (DFC) which is a neural network (NN) trained to isolate the nonlinearity and inertia from the PID controller, allowing the system for tuning the PID controller can be simplified as an approximate linear system with the modeling error based-feedback and feed-forward compensations. Then, the PID controller is tuned by the Nyquist stability criterion to place every closed-loop pole to a specific region in the left-half s-plane to guarantee the stability with considering the modeling error. Besides, a NN based feed-forward compensator is trained as the inverse model of the feedback compensator to further smooth the temperature fluctuation caused by the disturbance. To avoid the chattering problem in the reaching-law-based discrete-time sliding mode control (DSMC) and the generation of over-large control action in the equivalent-control-based DSMC, a new DSMC method based on non-smooth control is proposed in this paper. Since there is no use of any switching term in the proposed DSMC, it is a chattering-free SMC method. Meanwhile, it is shown that the newly proposed non-smooth control-based DSMC can guarantee the same level of accuracy for the sliding mode motion as that of an equivalent control-based DSMC. This paper addresses the sliding mode control problem for uncertain MIMO linear Markovian jump systems. Firstly, by using the linear matrix inequality approach, sufficient conditions are proposed to guarantee the stochastically asymptotical stability of the system on the sliding surfaces. Secondly, an equivalent control based sliding mode control is proposed, such that the closed-loop system can be driven onto the desired sliding surfaces in a finite time. In this paper, the impedance characteristic profiles of wooden power poles altering the leakage current from high voltage (HV) insulators are investigated to better understand the role of wood in leakage current signatures. A comparison with past research shows the capacitive components of a pole's impedance have previously been ignored, however, has little effect on using an impedance value for effective resistance. Examining the impedance properties of typical Copper Chromium Arsenate (CCA) impregnated wood for 66 kV distribution poles shows dangerous conductance properties of wood at this voltage, providing an explanation for these poles catching fire at triple the rate of 22 kV distribution poles. After a systematic investigation of wood used for poles, a preliminary impedance characteristic of wooden poles in Victoria, Australia is established for the first time, where the pole is weathered, CCA impregnated and operating at 22 kV under both dry and wet weather conditions. This paper studies the load frequency control (LFC) for power systems with communication delays via an event-triggered control method to reduce the amount of communications required. The effect of the load disturbances on the augmented output is defined as a robust performance index of the augmented LFC scheme. By utilizing a time-delayed system design approach, a new model of the LFC scheme with delays is formulated, where the communication delays and event-triggered control are integrated for the LFC scheme. Based on the Lyapunov–Krasovskii functional method, the criteria for the event-triggered stability analysis and control synthesis of the LFC scheme are derived. This study investigates the quantisation effect on dynamical behaviours of the zero‐order‐holder discretisation of multi‐input sliding‐mode control systems with matched uncertainties. The quasi‐sliding mode induced by both quantisation and discretisation is analysed and the thicknesses of the boundary layers are calculated. It is shown that chattering phenomenon occurs in the union of the two boundary layers induced by both kinds of discontinuous laws. The stability condition is given and the authors show that the switching manifold has relatively low chattering frequencies due to quantised state feedback. The finite-time synchronization problem is investigated for a class of neutral complex dynamical networks with Markovian switching, partly unknown transition rates and time-varying, mode-dependent delays. By utilizing the pinning control technique and constructing the appropriate stochastic Lyapunov–Krasovskii functional, several sufficient conditions are proposed to ensure the finite-time synchronization for the neutral complex dynamical networks with Markovian switching, on the basis of Kronecker product, inequality techniques and finite-time stability theorem. This study studies the protocol of robust synchronisation of second‐order multi‐agent systems via pinning control. First, it is shown that, for the second‐order multi‐agent system with disturbances, by pinning one node with small coupling strength, the whole system can reach synchronisation. This paper studies the higher order finite-time consensus protocol for heterogeneous multi-agent systems (HMASs). By adding a power integrator method and using heterogeneous domination method, two kinds of consensus protocols are proposed with state feedback and output feedback, respectively. First, for the leaderless and leader-follower HMASs, the continuous finite-time consensus protocols are proposed. In this paper, an equivalent control based sliding mode control is proposed for single input linear Markovian jump systems which guarantees the asymptotical stability. Furthermore, by using the stochastic system theory, a multi-step state transition conditional probability function is introduced for the continuous Markovian process, which is used to define the reaching and sliding probabilities. Furthermore, the formulas for calculating reaching and sliding probabilities are derived for situations where the control force may not be strong enough to ensure the fully asymptotical stability. This paper provides a comprehensive review of the applications of smart meters in the control and optimisation of power grids to support a smooth energy transition towards the renewable energy future. The smart grids become more complicated due to the presence of small-scale low inertia generators and the implementation of electric vehicles (EVs), which are mainly based on intermittent and variable renewable energy resources. Optimal and reliable operation of this environment using conventional model-based approaches is very difficult. Advancements in measurement and communication technologies have brought the opportunity of collecting temporal or real-time data from prosumers through Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI). Smart metering brings the potential of applying data-driven algorithms for different power system operations and planning services, such as infrastructure sizing and upgrade and generation forecasting. It can also be used for demand-side management, especially in the presence of new technologies such as EVs, 5G/6G networks and cloud computing. These algorithms face privacy-preserving and cybersecurity challenges that need to be well addressed. This article surveys the state-of-the-art of each of these topics, reviewing applications, challenges and opportunities of using smart meters to address them. It also stipulates the challenges that smart grids present to smart meters and the benefits that smart meters can bring to smart grids. A robust output regulation of a control system aims at disturbance rejection and reference tracking in the presence of uncertainties. Technically, the control design contains two mechanisms: the compensation of nontrivial steady states caused by disturbances and/or reference trajectories and the stabilization of an error system relative to steady states. Feedforward compensation and the internal model (including an approximate integrator) are the two main techniques for the former, while the latter is on a case-by-case basis. This article studies an alternative sliding-mode-based approach that can address the two mechanisms simultaneously, thanks to the new concept of sliding-mode-based output zeroing manifold. This concept bridges the two widely studied areas: robust output regulation and sliding-mode control. This paper proposes a terminal sliding-mode (TSM) observer for estimating the immeasurable mechanical parameters of permanent-magnet synchronous motors (PMSMs) used for complex mechanical systems. The observer can track the system states in finite time with high steady-state precision. A TSM control strategy is designed to guarantee the global finite-time stability of the observer and, meanwhile, to estimate the mechanical parameters of the PMSM. A novel second-order sliding-mode algorithm is designed to soften the switching control signal of the observer. The effect of the equivalent low-pass filter can be properly controlled in the algorithm based on requirements. The smooth signal of the TSM observer is directly used for the parameter estimation. Abstract: This paper proposes a method to overcome the singularity problem of terminal sliding-mode control systems. The system behaviors in both the reaching phase and the ideal sliding-mode are analyzed. A global nonsingular terminal sliding-mode control strategy for nonlinear systems is developed and it is shown that the proposed control strategy can eliminate the singularity, while guaranteeing the finite-time reachability of the systems to the terminal sliding-mode surface and the finite-time convergence of the systems towards the origin along the terminal sliding-mode surface. A nonlinear model combining boiler–turbine–generator dynamic characteristics for a thermal-power-generation unit is first introduced. Based on the nonlinear model, a new coordinated control design is proposed using the backstepping method incorporating the coordinated passivation approach that considers the entire boiler–turbine–generator system as a whole. The control design consists of three subcontrollers, namely, a main steam valve controller, an excitation controller, and a fuel flow controller. It is shown that the proposed coordinated control design can ensure asymptotical stability of the closed-loop system and improve the electric power regulation performance. Abstract: This paper proposes a terminal sliding mode observer for a class of nonlinear systems to achieve finite time convergence for all error states. Compared to standard sliding mode observers which only enable finite time convergence of the output error, the observer in this paper makes use of fractional powers to reduce other non-output errors to zero in finite time. Abstract: In this communique, the properties of a class of discrete-time dynamic systems with power rule are studied and comparisons with their continuous-time counterparts as well as the linear discrete-time systems are made. It is shown that using power rule can be beneficial for improving dynamic behaviors of discrete-time systems. This paper presents a new training method for fuzzy neural network (FNN) systems to approximate unknown nonlinear continuous functions. Fast terminal sliding mode combining the finite time convergent property of terminal attractor and exponential convergent property of linear system has faster convergence to the origin in finite time. The proposed training algorithm uses the principle of the fast terminal sliding mode into the conventional gradient descent learning algorithm. The Lyapunov stability analysis in this paper guarantees that the approximation is stable and converges to the optimal approximation function with improved speed instead of finite time convergence to unknown function. Recently, it has been demonstrated that many large-scale complex dynamical networks display a collective synchronization motion. Here, we introduce a time-varying complex dynamical network model and further investigate its synchronization phenomenon. Based on this new complex network model, two network chaos synchronization theorems are proved. We show that the chaos synchronization of a time-varying complex network is determined by means of the inner coupled link matrix, the eigenvalues and the corresponding eigenvectors of the coupled configuration matrix, rather than the conventional eigenvalues of the coupled configuration matrix for a uniform network. Especially, we do not assume that the coupled configuration matrix is symmetric and its off-diagonal elements are nonnegative, which in a way generalizes the related results existing in the literature. This paper addresses the robust learning control problem for a class of nonlinear systems with structured periodic and unstructured aperiodic uncertainties. A recursive technique is proposed which extends the backstepping idea to the robust repetitive learning control systems. A learning evaluation function instead of a Lyapunov function is formulated as a guideline for derivation of the control strategy which guarantees the asymptotic stability of the tracking system. This paper presents a global non-singular terminal sliding mode controller for rigid manipulators. A new terminal sliding mode manifold is first proposed for the second-order system to enable the elimination of the singularity problem associated with conventional terminal sliding mode control. The time taken to reach the equilibrium point from any initial state is guaranteed to be finite time. In this paper, a time-delayed chaos control method based on repetitive learning is proposed. A general repetitive learning control structure based on the invariant manifold of the chaotic system is given. The integration of the repetitive learning control principle and the time-delayed chaos control technique enables adaptive learning of appropriate control actions from learning cycles. In contrast to the conventional repetitive learning control, no exact knowledge (analytic representation) of the target unstable periodic orbits is needed, except for the time delay constant, which can be identified via either experiments or adaptive learning. The controller effectively stabilizes the states of the continuous-time chaos on desired unstable periodic orbits. A novel adaptive time-delayed control method is proposed for stabilizing inherent unstable periodic orbits (UPOs) in chaotic systems with unknown parameters. We first explore the inherent properties of chaotic systems and use the system state and time-delayed system state to form an asymptotically stable invariant manifold so that when the system state enters the manifold and stays in it thereafter, the resulting motion enables the stabilization of the desired UPOs. We then use the model following concept to construct an identifier for the estimation of the uncertain system parameters. We shall prove that under the developed scheme, the system parameter estimates will converge to their true values. The effectiveness of the method is confirmed by computer simulations. A new super-twisting-like fractional (STLF) controller is proposed in this article to improve the control performance for surface-mounted permanent magnet synchronous motor (SPMSM) system. Compared with the conventional super-twisting sliding mode (STSM) algorithm, the most distinctive characteristic of the proposed strategy is to replace the discontinuous switching function hidden under the integration with a nonsmooth term, which can significantly optimize the performance of SPMSM system. Meanwhile, the introduction of nonsmooth term can provide stronger anti-disturbance capability than the widely used smooth controller. In addition, the desired control performance can be achieved by adjusting the parameters of the proposed STLF controller according to the specific situations. Comparative experiments among the proposed STLF, conventional STSM and proportional integral controllers are carried out to demonstrate the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed STLF technique. In this paper the design of adaptive sliding mode control for fuzzy systems is discussed. For a complex physical system represented by an amalgamated fuzzy global model that compromises a set of linear models, conditions for the adaptive sliding mode control to stabilize the global fuzzy model are given.
