The article presents abstracts of the papers presented at the 63rd annual meeting of the Association of American Geographers, Saint. Louis, Missouri. The meeting took place in April 1967. The paper "Defense and the Morphology of Certain Settlements in the Western Mediterranean," discusses economic growth. Another paper "Approach to a Generating Model for Climatic Statistics," discusses a set of probability models for generating climatic statistics. After a brief review of previous work on this subject, a model based on moving waves superimposed, on standing waves in the zonal winds is outlined.

The article invites readers to contribute their papers, suggestions or opinions for the incoming international convention of the International Council for Exceptional Children which will be held in Kansas City, Missouri. Such papers or suggestions may be submitted to the committee chairman assigned.

This paper describes an attempt to use a theoretical framework of social action to analyze and describe how a small community in the Lead Belt of Missouri acquired fire protection through volunteer group effort. The analysis showed that a theoretical social action model is a useful tool for studying the group processes involved in community development. The results indicate that a community development contest acts as a catalytic agent in stimulating volunteer group efforts toward the improvement of physical facilities in a community. Information about several papers discussed at the conference on the comparative public opinion about social sciences which was held at Excelsior Springs, Missouri on May 8, 1964 is presented. The various reports presented dealt with the customary notions of research methodology and the population control programs globally. The session featured several social scientists including Bernard Berelson, David L. Sills, and Philip E. Converse.

A conference paper that discusses the results of a research study conducted to establish a standardized method for oral radiography is presented. Dental diseases that may be diagnosed through radiography are considered, including periodontitis, alveolitis, and granuloma. The paper was read at the 55th annual meeting of the Missouri State Dental Association held in Kansas City, Missouri on April 12, 1920.

This paper reports on some of the results of a study on research administration at the University of Missouri, Columbia. The subjects were 248 professors with research grants. The paper first examines some characteristics that are likely to lead to research planning. Some of the characteristics examined include size of research grant, number of subordinates in the research project, and preferences for type of research problems investigated. The consequences of planning, the satisfaction of the research professor, his rewards and productivity are also examined. This paper analyzes the relationship between intelligence and occupation and, secondly, relates occupation to various aspects of migration. The relationship between occupation and test intelligence has been the subject of considerable investigation. There tends to be a hierarchy of occupational structure which is closely related to test intelligence, whether the classification is based on the subject's parental occupation or on his own occupation. The material for the investigation consists of the Ohio State University Intelligence Test scores for about 5,000 boys and girls who were high school seniors in 116 Missouri communities in 1939-41. There seems to be a distinct tendency for the brighter boys and girls in rural areas and small towns of Missouri, to find their occupational levels in the higher prestige occupations, especially the professional groups, while those who perform more poorly on tests are more likely to become manual worker and farmers with somewhat lower rankings on the prestige scale.

This paper presents the results of an intensive field investigation to determine whether farm operators who were sought as sources of farm information in a northeast Missouri farming community possessed characteristics which distinguished them from other farm operators in the community. Analysis of the data revealed that those who were most frequently sought as sources did possess such characteristics and that many of these characteristics were functionally related to the diffusion and use of farm information. An answer to the question whether local influentials possess the same leadership qualities under other cultural conditions known to exist in rural society must await further research. This paper seeks to assess the utility of the transactional model of individual stress. According to the logic of the model, whether persons manifest stress is a multiplicative function of both situational and individual characteristics. The paper briefly discusses possible advantages of the perspective over other frames of reference. Then it describes a pilot study designed to determine whether hypotheses based on the transactional model could be supported empirically. Utilizing interview data from a small probability sample of all adults in the state of Missouri, scales were constructed by an improved method of item analysis for use as indicators of variations in stress and the situational and individual factors. Comparing stress scores by situational and individual variables produced results indicative of a multiplicative relationship and thus supportive of theories derived from the transactional perspective. The article reports on the research paper "To the Taxonomist and Ecologist Whose Fight Is the Preservation of Nature" on taxonomist's and ecologist's role in the protection of environment, presented at a symposium on Systematics and Natural Areas of the 13th Annual Symposium of the Missouri Botanical Garden on Systematic Biology at Rebstock Hall Auditorium in Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri, on October 15, 1966. The paper discussed a platform based on the understanding of human evolution and it's meaning to conservation and talked about the fundamental reasons for nature preservation. It also talked about the social responsibility of systematic biology.

The article presents information about a symposium on military operations research, held at the Fourteenth National Meeting of the Operations Research Society of America, in Saint Louis, Missouri, on October 23, 1958. Six papers were presented by the representatives of the six principal operations-research agencies of the national-defense establishments of the United States and Canada. Joseph H. Engel's "Operations Research for the U.S. Navy Since World War II," focuses on the U.S. Navy's operations-research program since World War II. Various conclusions have been extracted by several researches over the years shows that a group, which is centrally organized, can provide, with economy and little duplication, the continuity of leadership and experience to do useful operations research for a complex organizations such as the U.S. Navy on a continuing basis, and that such a central group has the flexibility to react properly emergencies. W.L. Whitson's "The Growth of the Operations Research Office in the U.S. Army," states that operations research had its formal initiation in the U.S. Army ten years ago with the formation of ORO at the Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, Massachusetts. At the present time the Chief of Research and Development of the Department of the Army spends about $11 million per year on operations-research type contracts with 25 to 30 different companies.

The article discusses various papers on operations research presented at a symposium held at the 14th National Meeting of the Operations Research Society of America in Saint Louis, Missouri on October 23, 1958. A number of alternative solutions to the railroads efforts in dealing with time and money computing and rechecking what they owe each other had a strong economic argument for sampling even within the framework of railroad practice and policy. On the other hand, the improvement of operations research will happen if the researcher is involved in and concerned with the implementation of technical successes and practical failures. In addition, the review of the operations by the Port of New York Authority encompasses the entire Port Authority and that there has only one operations research study.

The aim of the paper is to examine the population shifts and settlement changes in two townships of unlike agricultural potential and accessibility near Springfield, Missouri. Each township is representative of a major physical region of the Ozarks. Buck Prairie Township in Lawrence County lies in the Springfield Plain and represents some of the best agricultural land in an Ozark border region. On the other hand, Linn Township in Christian County lies along the Eureka Springs Escarpment which forms the northern border of the White River Hills, one of the most rugged districts of the Ozarks. Significant changes in the general settlement patterns have occurred, although, because of variable environmental conditions and differences in economic factors, the amount of change has not everywhere been the same. However, observations made during an extensive survey of land use and settlement in the Springfield vicinity indicate that Buck Prairie and Linn townships are representative of larger sections of the Ozarks.

This paper gives the results of a partial analysis of the "Standard Community Association" plan as it was developed in Missouri. The principal items included in this program were: (1) Leadership; (2) community planning; (3) recreation; and (4) dramatics. This project was started as a combination of demonstration and experiment. The general findings indicate that: (1) This form of community organization appears to have merit as a medium of developing social and economic planning on a community basis; (2) Insofar as the plan is a stereotyped one, it cannot be generally applied to all types of small communities; (3) This comprehensive structural type of community development involving a set procedure should be applied only under the most favorable conditions, and not until a thorough analysis of the community has been made; (4) The idea of the community as a working unit appears to be sound; (5) Probably one of the best plans for the development of most rural communities is that of helping existing local organizations to pursue their own work on a community-wide basis in the most effective manner; and (6) Communities generally are in need of help in developing leadership, and programs of work. a [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article discusses a study on the social attitudes of Catholic high school students in Saint Louis, Missouri in February 1952. The present paper makes no claim to have discovered the true attitudes of the respondents. The Mihanovich-Janson test was administered to 1002 seniors in thirteen Catholic high schools in Saint Louis. The results of twenty items of the test were presented in the cited Review article. In the following comparisons the letter A signifies the Saint Louis study and the letter B the Southern study. The ten items which are found in both tests have been divided into three categories and are presented in their percentage distribution and comparison for each item. The categories are: Very Similar Attitudes; Fairly Similar Attitudes; Attitudes on Race Relations. Most of these questions have an answer which may be called correct from the point of view of Catholic social principles and values. The question on cheating, however, may be interpreted: an acceptance of the statement may mean either that the student is harsh in his judgment of others or that he is adamant in his attitude toward dishonesty. In four of the statements the regional comparison shows a very close similarity of attitudes. The discussion of these nine items which were not included in the study remains inconclusive until a basis of comparison can be established. The frequently expressed desire of sociologists for cooperative research may be approached through the simultaneous administration of attitude tests in various regions of the country. While the reliability of testing subjective beliefs and opinions may remain open to question. Successful cooperation among sociologists in the procedure of administering such tests may be the first step toward cooperation in more significant areas of social research.

Information commonly flows downhill. This article examines the flow of information on the hill of prestige in a rural community. It is based on a paper read at the meeting of the American Sociological Society and Rural Sociological Society in Washington, D. C., August 29, 1957. The article studies barriers to the diffusion of farm information. The locale of the study was a trade-area community in north-east Missouri where grain and livestock farming predominate and where socio-economic indexes are generally above the state level.

The article presents an analysis of Missouri's utility earnings and rate base formulae. The matter of General Order No. 38A of the Missouri Public Service Commission relating to its rate making policies and practices needs further interpretation and review in answer to an analysis. Although concluding that the Missouri rate base and earnings formula is definitely a step in the right direction, because, at present, it permits a needed increase in permitted earnings of utilities. The Commission's order merits a more pragmatic and less hypothetical treatment in order to set forth the issues in the case. It is also believed that the formula is definitely a step in the right direction, not because it recognizes the need for increased earnings, but because it more actually reflects the facts relative to depreciation accountability. The purpose of this paper is to outline briefly some of the economic and accounting principles that were observed by the Missouri Commission in order to arrive at their announced policy relating to the establishment of the utility rate base in future proceedings.

This article presents a report of the representative to the American Association for the Advancement of Science. The program for the Section K of the AAAS in Missouri, consisted of 8 sessions five of which were concerned with the general subject of the impact of technology upon society, one with public opinion polls, one with the address of the vice-president, Chairman of the Section, and one with business. The session dealing with the regional organization and control of resources dealt with the proposed M.V.A. The author representative personally planned this program and presided at the session. One of the papers was read by J. O. Hertzler. Other sociologists who read papers at the sessions were W. F. Ogburn, Samuel Stouffer, and S. C. Gillfillan. The attendance at most of these sessions was pitifully small, except for the session on public opinion polls which was very well attended. There was a glaring lack of local support, perhaps most of the attendance coming from outside the St. Louis area in Missouri. Apparently no effort had been made to turn out the students in social sciences attending the two local municipal universities.

This article presents information on fourth annual meeting of Society for neuroscience which will held between October 20-23, in St. Louis, Missouri. Symposia, state-of-the-art sessions, in-depth panel explorations, dinner discussion groups, and volunteer paper sessions will cover a broad range of neuroscientific subjects. A special demonstration covering the use of computers in the neurosciences is also planned in cooperation with the Washington University School of Medicine.
