Entity resolution (ER) identifies data instances referring to the same real-world entity and has received enormous research attention. In this paper, we examine the task of ER from a broader perspective, with its input extended from textual records, which are conventionally studied in the literature, to other modalities such as check-in sequences, GPS trajectories and surveillance video frames to generate new applications. Our goal in this paper is to design an effective model to uniformly support all these ER applications with different input formats. Technically, we fully exploit the semantic contexts of embedding vectors for the pair of input instances. In particular, we propose an integrated multi-context attention framework that takes into account self-attention, pair-attention and global-attention from three types of context. The idea can be further extended to incorporate attribute attention in order to support structured datasets. We conduct extensive experiments on a diverse class of entity resolutions tasks, including tasks on unstructured, structured and dirty textual records, check-in sequences, GPS trajectories and surveillance video frames. Radio signal recognition has a wide application in future communication systems and the vehicular communication, whose core is the extraction of signal features such as electromagnetic fingerprints. With the rapid development of artificial intelligence technology, deep learning has made amazing breakthroughs in image recognition, speech recognition and other fields. Deep learning is applied to electromagnetic fingerprint extraction in this paper. Firstly, thousands of the downlink aircraft communications addressing and reporting system (ACARS) signals used for communication between civil aircraft and airport tower are collected and generated. Then a pre-transformation network suitable for electromagnetic signals is constructed to convert one-dimensional signals into two-dimensional feature maps, and afterwards the feature maps are input into the convolutional neural network (CNN) for classification. By adopting the attention modules, the classification results were improved by a few percentage points over the baseline with a little cost. The method proposed in this paper achieves an accuracy rate of 94.1% and can obtain the aircraft type in a shorter time than traditional method. Surface defect detection plays an important role in manufacturing and has aroused widespread interests. However, it is challenging as defects are highly similar to non-defects. To address this issue, this paper proposes a Region of Interest Attention (RoIA) network based on deep learning for automatically identifying surface defects. It consists of three parts: multi-level feature preservation (MFP) module, region proposal attention (RPA) module, and skip dense connection detection (SDCD) ones, where MFP is designed to differentiate defect features and texture information by feature reserved block, RPA is developed to locate the position of the defects by capturing global and local context information, and SDCD is proposed to better predict defect categories by propagating the fine-grained details from low-level feature map to high-level one. Experimental results conducted on three public datasets (e.g., NEU-DET, DAGM and Magnetic-Tile) demonstrate that the proposed method can significantly improve the detection performance than state-of-the-art ones and achieve an average defect detection accuracy of 99.49%. The vanilla Few-shot Learning (FSL) learns to build a classifier for a new concept from one or very few target examples, with the general assumption that source and target classes are sampled from the same domain. Recently, the task of Cross-Domain Few-Shot Learning (CD-FSL) aims at tackling the FSL where there is a huge domain shift between the source and target datasets. Extensive efforts on CD-FSL have been made via either directly extending the meta-learning paradigm of vanilla FSL methods, or employing massive unlabeled target data to help learn models. In this paper, we notice that in the CD-FSL task, the few labeled target images have never been explicitly leveraged to inform the model in the training stage. However, such a labeled target example set is very important to bridge the huge domain gap. Critically, this paper advocates a more practical training scenario for CD-FSL. And our key insight is to utilize a few labeled target data to guide the learning of the CD-FSL model. Technically, we propose a novel Generalized Meta-learning based Feature-Disentangled Mixup network, namely GMeta-FDMixup. We make three key contributions of utilizing GMeta-FDMixup to address CD-FSL. Firstly, we present two mixup modules – mixup-P and mixup-M that help facilitate utilizing the unbalanced and disjoint source and target datasets. These two novel modules enable diverse image generation for training the model on the source domain. Secondly, to narrow the domain gap explicitly, we contribute a novel feature disentanglement module that learns to decouple the domain-irrelevant and domain-specific features. By stripping the domain-specific features, we alleviate the negative effects caused by the domain inductive bias. Finally, we repurpose a new contrastive learning module, dubbed ConL. ConL prevents the model from only capturing category-related features via introducing contrastive loss. Thus, the generalization ability on novel categories is improved. Recent research advances in salient object detection (SOD) could largely be attributed to ever-stronger multi-scale feature representation empowered by the deep learning technologies. The existing SOD deep models extract multi-scale features via the off-the-shelf encoders and combine them smartly via various delicate decoders. However, the kernel sizes in this commonly-used thread are usually “fixed”. In our new experiments, we have observed that kernels of small size are preferable in scenarios containing tiny salient objects. In contrast, large kernel sizes could perform better for images with large salient objects. Inspired by this observation, we advocate the “dynamic” scale routing (as a brand-new idea) in this paper. It will result in a generic plug-in that could directly fit the existing feature backbone. This paper’s key technical innovations are two-fold. First, instead of using the vanilla convolution with fixed kernel sizes for the encoder design, we propose the dynamic pyramid convolution (DPConv), which dynamically selects the best-suited kernel sizes w.r.t. the given input. Second, we provide a self-adaptive bidirectional decoder design to accommodate the DPConv-based encoder best. The most significant highlight is its capability of routing between feature scales and their dynamic collection, making the inference process scale-aware. Since gait can be utilized to identify individuals from a far distance without their interaction and coordination, recently many gait recognition methods have been proposed. However, due to a real-world scenario of clothing changes, a degradation occurs for most of these methods. Thus in this paper, a more efficient gait recognition method is proposed to address the problem of clothing variances. First, part-based gait features are formulated from two different perspectives, i.e., the separated body parts that are more robust to clothing changes and the estimated human skeleton key-point regions. It is reasonable to formulate such features for cloth-changing gait recognition, because these two perspectives are both less vulnerable to clothing changes. Given that each feature has its own advantages and disadvantages, a more efficient gait feature is generated in this paper by assembling these two features together. Moreover, since local features are more discriminative than global features, in this paper more attention is focused on the local short-range features. Also, unlike most methods, in our method we treat the estimated key-point features as a set of word embeddings, and a transformer encoder is specifically used to learn the dependence of each correlative key-points. The robustness and effectiveness of our proposed method are certified by experiments on CASIA Gait Dataset B, and it has achieved the state-of-the-art performance on this dataset. The content based image retrieval aims to find the similar images from a large scale dataset against a query image. Generally, the similarity between the representative features of the query image and dataset images is used to rank the images for retrieval. In early days, various hand designed feature descriptors have been investigated based on the visual cues such as color, texture, shape, etc. that represent the images. However, the deep learning has emerged as a dominating alternative of hand-designed feature engineering from a decade. It learns the features automatically from the data. This paper presents a comprehensive survey of deep learning based developments in the past decade for content based image retrieval. The categorization of existing state-of-the-art methods from different perspectives is also performed for greater understanding of the progress. The taxonomy used in this survey covers different supervision, different networks, different descriptor type and different retrieval type. A performance analysis is also performed using the state-of-the-art methods. The insights are also presented for the benefit of the researchers to observe the progress and to make the best choices. Smoke detection in video is a challenging task because of the irregular shape of smoke, its complex motion state, which is affected by temperature, wind and other external factors, and background disturbances. Pixel-based foreground modeling method is a crucial step in many smoke detection systems and can be applied to efficiently focus on a certain object or a specific region to detect movements or anomalies. In video analysis, it is a natural idea to move the focus from the pixel-level foreground to the feature-level foreground. In this paper, the feature foreground is generated by the middle layer of a convolutional neural network (CNN) to guide the temporal modeling process for smoke objects. A novel temporal module called the Feature Foreground Module (FFM) is proposed to boost learning of a smoke temporal representation. Consider the problem of smoke analysis in video, we present a novel unifying approach, named an enhanced feature foreground network (EFFNet), that performs both smoke source prediction and detection. Efficient branch networks are designed in EFFNet, to predict the source mask and bounding boxes of smoke plumes in video. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first paper to study the source of smoke using deep learning methods. Large-scale labeled data are generally required to train deep neural networks in order to obtain better performance in visual feature learning from images or videos for computer vision applications. To avoid extensive cost of collecting and annotating large-scale datasets, as a subset of unsupervised learning methods, self-supervised learning methods are proposed to learn general image and video features from large-scale unlabeled data without using any human-annotated labels. This paper provides an extensive review of deep learning-based self-supervised general visual feature learning methods from images or videos. First, the motivation, general pipeline, and terminologies of this field are described. Then the common deep neural network architectures that used for self-supervised learning are summarized. Next, the schema and evaluation metrics of self-supervised learning methods are reviewed followed by the commonly used datasets for images, videos, audios, and 3D data, as well as the existing self-supervised visual feature learning methods. Finally, quantitative performance comparisons of the reviewed methods on benchmark datasets are summarized and discussed for both image and video feature learning. Learning-based infrared small object detection methods currently rely heavily on the classification backbone network. This tends to result in tiny object loss and feature distinguishability limitations as the network depth increases. Furthermore, small objects in infrared images are frequently emerged bright and dark, posing severe demands for obtaining precise object contrast information. For this reason, we in this paper propose a simple and effective “U-Net in U-Net” framework, UIU-Net for short, and detect small objects in infrared images. As the name suggests, UIU-Net embeds a tiny U-Net into a larger U-Net backbone, enabling the multi-level and multi-scale representation learning of objects. Moreover, UIU-Net can be trained from scratch, and the learned features can enhance global and local contrast information effectively. More specifically, the UIU-Net model is divided into two modules: the resolution-maintenance deep supervision (RM-DS) module and the interactive-cross attention (IC-A) module. RM-DS integrates Residual U-blocks into a deep supervision network to generate deep multi-scale resolution-maintenance features while learning global context information. Further, IC-A encodes the local context information between the low-level details and high-level semantic features. Extensive experiments conducted on two infrared single-frame image datasets, i.e., SIRST and Synthetic datasets, show the effectiveness and superiority of the proposed UIU-Net in comparison with several state-of-the-art infrared small object detection methods. The proposed UIU-Net also produces powerful generalization performance for video sequence infrared small object datasets, e.g., ATR ground/air video sequence dataset. In multi-label classification, the strategy of label-specific features has been shown to be effective to learn from multi-label examples by accounting for the distinct discriminative properties of each class label. However, most existing approaches exploit the semantic relations among labels as immutable prior knowledge, which may not be appropriate to constrain the learning process of label-specific features. In this paper, we propose to learn label semantics and label-specific features in a collaborative way. Accordingly, a deep neural network (DNN) based approach named Clif, i.e., CollaborativeLearning of label semantIcs and deep label-specificFeatures for multi-label classification, is proposed. By integrating a graph autoencoder for encoding semantic relations in the label space and a tailored feature-disentangling module for extracting label-specific features, Clif is able to employ the learned label semantics to guide mining label-specific features and propagate label-specific discriminative properties to the learning process of the label semantics. In such a way, the learning of label semantics and label-specific features interact and facilitate with each other so that label semantics can provide more accurate guidance to label-specific feature learning. Low-light image enhancement (LLIE) aims at improving the perception or interpretability of an image captured in an environment with poor illumination. Recent advances in this area are dominated by deep learning-based solutions, where many learning strategies, network structures, loss functions, training data, etc. have been employed. In this paper, we provide a comprehensive survey to cover various aspects ranging from algorithm taxonomy to unsolved open issues. To examine the generalization of existing methods, we propose a low-light image and video dataset, in which the images and videos are taken by different mobile phones’ cameras under diverse illumination conditions. Besides, for the first time, we provide a unified online platform that covers many popular LLIE methods, of which the results can be produced through a user-friendly web interface. In addition to qualitative and quantitative evaluation of existing methods on publicly available and our proposed datasets, we also validate their performance in face detection in the dark. This survey together with the proposed dataset and online platform could serve as a reference source for future study and promote the development of this research field. Visual surveillance for autonomous power facility inspection is considered to bethe prominent field of study in the power industry. This research field completely focuses on either object detection or image fusion which lacks the overall consideration. By considering this, a single end-to-end object detection method by incorporating the image fusion named Fast Detection Fusion Network (FDFNet) is proposed in this paper to output qualitative fused images with detection results. The parameters in the FDFnet are greatly reduced by sharing the feature extraction network between image fusion and object detection tasks, due to which a huge reduction in computational complexity is achieved. On this basis, the object detection algorithm performance on various types of power facility images is compared and analyzed. For experimentation purposes, an IR (infrared) and VIS (visible) image acquisition system has also been designed. In addition, a dataset named CVPower with different sets of images for power facility fusion detection is constructed for this research field. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method can achieve the mAP of not less than 70%, process 2 frames per second, and produce high qualitative fused images. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Due to the diversity of power consumption patterns, the false positive rate (FPR) of data-driven electricity theft detection (ETD) methods is too high to meet practical needs, which severely restricts the engineering application of data-based methods. To reduce FPR of ETD methods based on advanced metering infrastructure (AMI), a deep neural network with low FPR (LFPR-DNN) is proposed in this paper. First, a deep model is constructed based on one-dimensional convolution and residual network, which can automatically extract features from consumption data. Then, a two-stage training scheme is used to train the network. In the first stage, the conventional gradient descent algorithm is used to update the network weights. To minimize the impact of data imbalance on detection performance, focal loss is used. Besides, grid search is used to optimize the hyper-parameters of the model. In the second stage, with FPR as the optimization objective, the particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm is used to train the network. Finally, the proposed LFPR-DNN is verified by using the open Irish data set. Compared to other state-of-the-art classifiers, LFPR-DNN has the lowest FPR with 0.29% and the highest AUC with 99.42%. Classification of 3D objects – the selection of a category in which each object belongs – is of great interest in the field of machine learning. Numerous researchers use deep neural networks to address this problem, altering the network architecture and representation of the 3D shape used as an input. To investigate the effectiveness of their approaches, we conduct an extensive survey of existing methods and identify common ideas by which we categorize them into a taxonomy. Second, we evaluate 11 selected classification networks on two 3D object datasets, extending the evaluation to a larger dataset on which most of the selected approaches have not been tested yet. For this, we provide a framework for converting shapes from common 3D mesh formats into formats native to each network, and for training and evaluating different classification approaches on this data. Despite being partially unable to reach the accuracies reported in the original papers, we compare the relative performance of the approaches as well as their performance when changing datasets as the only variable to provide valuable insights into performance on different kinds of data. Click-through rate (CTR) prediction, whose goal is to predict the probability of the user to click on an item, has become increasingly significant in the recommender systems. Recently, some deep learning models with the ability to automatically extract the user interest from his/her behaviors have achieved great success. In these work, the attention mechanism is used to select the user interested items in historical behaviors, improving the performance of the CTR predictor. Normally, these attentive modules can be jointly trained with the base predictor by using gradient descents. In this paper, we regard user interest modeling as a feature selection problem, which we call user interest selection. For such a problem, we propose a novel approach under the framework of the wrapper method, which is named Meta-Wrapper. More specifically, we use a differentiable module as our wrapping operator and then recast its learning problem as a continuous bilevel optimization. Moreover, we use a meta-learning algorithm to solve the optimization and theoretically prove its convergence. Meanwhile, we also provide theoretical analysis to show that our proposed method 1) efficiencies the wrapper-based feature selection, and 2) achieves better resistance to overfitting. Channel attention mechanisms have been commonly applied in many visual tasks for effective performance improvement. It is able to reinforce the informative channels as well as to suppress the useless channels. Recently, different channel attention modules have been proposed and implemented in various ways. Generally speaking, they are mainly based on convolution and pooling operations. In this paper, we propose Gaussian process embedded channel attention (GPCA) module and further interpret the channel attention schemes in a probabilistic way. The GPCA module intends to model the correlations among the channels, which are assumed to be captured by beta distributed variables. As the beta distribution cannot be integrated into the end-to-end training of convolutional neural networks (CNNs) with a mathematically tractable solution, we utilize an approximation of the beta distribution to solve this problem. To specify, we adapt a Sigmoid-Gaussian approximation, in which the Gaussian distributed variables are transferred into the interval [0,1]. The Gaussian process is then utilized to model the correlations among different channels. In this case, a mathematically tractable solution is derived. The GPCA module can be efficiently implemented and integrated into the end-to-end training of the CNNs. Experimental results demonstrate the promising performance of the proposed GPCA module. Modern methods for counting people in crowded scenes rely on deep networks to estimate people densities in individual images. As such, only very few take advantage of temporal consistency in video sequences, and those that do only impose weak smoothness constraints across consecutive frames. In this paper, we advocate estimating people flows across image locations between consecutive images and inferring the people densities from these flows instead of directly regressing them. This enables us to impose much stronger constraints encoding the conservation of the number of people. As a result, it significantly boosts performance without requiring a more complex architecture. Furthermore, it allows us to exploit the correlation between people flow and optical flow to further improve the results. We also show that leveraging people conservation constraints in both a spatial and temporal manner makes it possible to train a deep crowd counting model in an active learning setting with much fewer annotations. This paper introduces deformable convolution in deep learning based joint denoising and demosaicing (JDD), which yields more adaptable representation and larger receptive fields in features extraction for a superior restoration performance. However, the deformable convolution generally leads to considerable computational load and irregular memory access bottleneck, limiting its extensive deployment on edge devices. To address this issue, we develop grouping strategy and assign independent offsets to each kernel group to reduce the computation latency while keeping the accuracy. Motivated by the exploration for aggregate distribution characteristics of deformable offsets, we present the offset sharing methodology to simplify the memory access complexity of deformable convolution. As for hardware acceleration, we specially design a novel deformable matrix multiplication workflow incorporated with a deformable memory mapping unit to boost the computational throughput. The verification experiments on FPGA demonstrate that the proposed deformable convolution based JDD can restore 4K Ultra High Definition (UHD) images at 70FPS and yields significant promotion in visual effect and objective quality assessment. Medical images contain various abnormal regions, most of which are closely related to the lesions or diseases. The abnormality or lesion is one of the major concerns during clinical practice and therefore becomes the key in answering questions about medical images. However, the recent efforts still focus on constructing a generic Visual Question Answering framework for medical-domain tasks, which is not adequate for practical medical requirements and applications. In this paper, we present two novel medical-specific modules named multiplication anomaly sensitive module and residual anomaly sensitive module to utilize weakly supervised anomaly localization information in medical Visual Question Answering. Firstly, the proposed multiplication anomaly sensitive module designed for anomaly-related questions can mask the feature of the whole image according to the anomaly location map. Secondly, the residual anomaly sensitive module could learn a flexible anomaly feature while preserving the information of the original questioned image, which is more helpful in answering anomaly-unrelated questions. Thirdly, the transformer decoder and multi-task learning strategy are combined to further enhance the question-reasoning ability and the model generalization performance. Knee osteoarthritis (KOA) as a disabling joint disease has doubled in prevalence since the mid-20th century. Early diagnosis for the longitudinal KOA grades has been increasingly important for effective monitoring and intervention. Although recent studies have achieved promising performance for baseline KOA grading, longitudinal KOA grading has been seldom studied and the KOA domain knowledge has not been well explored yet. In this paper, a novel deep learning architecture, namely adversarial evolving neural network (A-ENN), is proposed for longitudinal grading of KOA severity. As the disease progresses from mild to severe level, ENN involves the progression patterns for accurately characterizing the disease by comparing an input image it to the template images of different KL grades using convolution and deconvolution computations. In addition, an adversarial training scheme with a discriminator is developed to obtain the evolution traces. Thus, the evolution traces as fine-grained domain knowledge are further fused with the general convolutional image representations for longitudinal grading. Note that ENN can be applied to other learning tasks together with existing deep architectures, in which the responses characterize progressive representations. Comprehensive experiments on the Osteoarthritis Initiative (OAI) dataset were conducted to evaluate the proposed method. An overall accuracy was achieved as 62.7%, with the baseline, 12-month, 24-month, 36-month, and 48-month accuracy as 64.6%, 63.9%, 63.2%, 61.8% and 60.2%, respectively. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this paper, we present a comprehensive review of the imbalance problems in object detection. To analyze the problems in a systematic manner, we introduce a problem-based taxonomy. Following this taxonomy, we discuss each problem in depth and present a unifying yet critical perspective on the solutions in the literature. In addition, we identify major open issues regarding the existing imbalance problems as well as imbalance problems that have not been discussed before. Video summarization (VS) is generally formulated as a subset selection problem where a set of representative keyframes or key segments is selected from an entire video frame set. Though many sparse subset selection based VS algorithms have been proposed in the past decade, most of them adopt linear sparse formulation in the explicit feature vector space of video frames, and don’t consider the local or global relationships among frames. In this paper, we first extend the conventional sparse subset selection for VS into kernel block sparse subset selection (KBS3) to utilize the advantage of kernel sparse coding and introduce a local inter-frame relationship through packing of frame blocks. Going a step further, we propose a similarity based block sparse subset selection (SB2S3) model by applying a specially designed transformation matrix on the KBS3 model in order to introduce a kind of global inter-frame relationship through the similarity. Finally, a greedy pursuit based algorithm is devised for the proposed NP-hard model optimization. The proposed SB2S3 has the following advantages: 1) through the similarity between each frame and any other frame, the global relationship among all frames can be considered; 2) through block sparse coding, the local relationship of adjacent frames is further considered; and 3) it has a wider application, since features can derive similarity, but not vice versa. It is believed that the effect of modeling such global and local relationships among frames in this paper, is similar to that of modeling the long-range and short-range dependencies among frames in deep learning based methods. Experimental results on three benchmark datasets have demonstrated that the proposed approach is superior to not only other sparse subset selection based VS methods but also most unsupervised deep-learning based VS methods. For CNN-based visual action recognition, the accuracy may be increased if local key action regions are focused on. The task of self-attention is to focus on key features and ignore irrelevant information. So, self-attention is useful for action recognition. However, current self-attention methods usually ignore correlations among local feature vectors at spatial positions in CNN feature maps. In this paper, we propose an effective interaction-aware self-attention model which can extract information about the interactions between feature vectors to learn attention maps. Since the different layers in a network capture feature maps at different scales, we introduce a spatial pyramid with the feature maps at different layers for attention modeling. The multi-scale information is utilized to obtain more accurate attention scores. These attention scores are used to weight the local feature vectors of the feature maps and then calculate attentional feature maps. Since the number of feature maps input to the spatial pyramid attention layer is unrestricted, we easily extend this attention layer to a spatio-temporal version. Our model can be embedded in any general CNN to form a video-level end-to-end attention network for action recognition. Several methods are investigated to combine the RGB and flow streams to obtain accurate predictions of human actions. Deep learning based models have excelled in many computer vision tasks and appear to surpass humans’ performance. However, these models require an avalanche of expensive human labeled training data and many iterations to train their large number of parameters. This severely limits their scalability to the real-world long-tail distributed categories, some of which are with a large number of instances, but with only a few manually annotated. Learning from such extremely limited labeled examples is known as Few-Shot Learning (FSL). Different to prior arts that leverage meta-learning or data augmentation strategies to alleviate this extremely data-scarce problem, this paper presents a statistical approach, dubbed Instance Credibility Inference (ICI) to exploit the support of unlabeled instances for few-shot visual recognition. Typically, we repurpose the self-taught learning paradigm to predict pseudo-labels of unlabeled instances with an initial classifier trained from the few shot and then select the most confident ones to augment the training set to re-train the classifier. This is achieved by constructing a (Generalized) Linear Model (LM/GLM) with incidental parameters to model the mapping from (un-)labeled features to their (pseudo-)labels, in which the sparsity of the incidental parameters indicates the credibility of the corresponding pseudo-labeled instance. We rank the credibility of pseudo-labeled instances along the regularization path of their corresponding incidental parameters, and the most trustworthy pseudo-labeled examples are preserved as the augmented labeled instances. This process is repeated until all the unlabeled samples are included in the expanded training set. Theoretically, under the conditions of restricted eigenvalue, irrepresentability, and large error, our approach is guaranteed to collect all the correctly-predicted pseudo-labeled instances from the noisy pseudo-labeled set. Extensive experiments under two few-shot settings show the effectiveness of our approach on four widely used few-shot visual recognition benchmark datasets including miniImageNet, tieredImageNet, CIFAR-FS, and CUB. Modeling 3D visual saliency has received great attention due to the development of emerging 3D display technologies. Traditional methods relying on low-level features may not be efficient in interpreting 3D visual content from high-level semantic perspective. Despite numerous efforts dedicated to this area, existing 3D visual saliency detection methods do not necessarily excel in exploring the stereoscopic image saliency driven by the intra-view and inter-view dependencies among left and right views. In this paper, we propose a visual saliency detection method for stereoscopic images grounded on adaptive viewpoint feature enhancement via binocular vision. More specifically, the correlation among left and right views is investigated through a delicately designed binocular stereoscopic saliency feature aggregation module, enabling the generation of more representative saliency features towards binocular vision. Subsequently, to further aggregate the saliency features in multiple scales, we design a progressive attention-based saliency feature pyramid extraction module to effectively integrate the features from top-level to down-level based on the network hierarchy mechanism. The saliency maps are ultimately produced for stereoscopic images by evaluating the obtained saliency features. In addition, we create a stereoscopic image saliency dataset (SIS-3D) that includes 1086 stereoscopic image pairs with various content and their corresponding human eye fixation annotations, aiming to further facilitate the research on visual saliency detection for stereoscopic images. It has been recognized that texture patterns with abundant high-frequency components, such as grass and water, produce visual masking effects, and the distortion in textures is hard to be perceived by human eyes than structure regions. However, modern video codecs in a rate-distortion optimized manner usually consume a lot of bits to encode textures, leading to the insufficiency in perceptual coding performance. Nowadays, with the rapid development of deep learning, learning based texture synthesis methods have been proposed to replace the coding process of prediction residuals to reduce the rate cost. In this paper, we present a deep texture synthesizer named edge-based texture synthesis framework (ETSF). At encoder side, the framework detects texture regions by semantic and fidelity classification criteria, and the detected regions are quantized coarsely by the hybrid coding framework. In texture characterization, ETSF extracts low-level edge features representing pixel intensity variation. Feature processing tools are developed to remove the spatiotemporal redundancy of edges. The processed edge information is compressed and transmitted. To effectively recover textures, we design an edge-based texture synthesis generative adversarial network (ETSGAN) at the decoder of ETSF, which can incorporate edge information into convolutional layers and generate realistic textures. Experimental results on a collected texture dataset show that the proposed ETSF can achieve an average of -12.8%, -14.2% and -9.6% MOS BD-rate under lowdelay_B, lowdelay_P and random_access configurations of VVC coding, respectively. Cephalometric analysis relies on accurate detection of craniomaxillofacial (CMF) landmarks from cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) images. However, due to the complexity of CMF bony structures, it is difficult to localize landmarks efficiently and accurately. In this paper, we propose a deep learning framework to tackle this challenge by jointly digitalizing 105 CMF landmarks on CBCT images. By explicitly learning the local geometrical relationships between the landmarks, our approach extends Mask R-CNN for end-to-end prediction of landmark locations. Specifically, we first apply a detection network on a down-sampled 3D image to leverage global contextual information to predict the approximate locations of the landmarks. We subsequently leverage local information provided by higher-resolution image patches to refine the landmark locations. Faults are extreme events that canadversely affect the voltages in islanded microgrids. This paper provides a new data-driven methodology for timely prediction of the post-fault voltage stability in hybrid AC/DC microgrids. The proposed method performs a binary classification with delay constraints by processing sequences of the short-time mean squared deviations using a deep learning system. The deep learning system consists of a bidirectional long short-term memory network whose output is a probabilistic voltage instability indicator. When the value of the indicator is non-zero, persistent voltage disturbances are most likely to occur even after the fault clearance. The proposed method enables the microgrid to carry out remedial or preventive actions, such as event-triggered protection and control of distributed energy resources (DERs), which are advantageous to the resilient operation of the microgrids. Extensive and detailed electromagnetic transient (EMT) simulations of a low-voltage hybrid AC/DC microgrid benchmark are analyzed, and the results confirm the effectiveness of the proposed method for online prediction and fast voltage regulation. Deep learning (DL) techniques have shown promising performance for designing data-driven power system transient stability assessment (TSA) models. However, due to the deep structure of the DL, the resulting model is always a black-box and hard to explain, which hinders its practical adoption by the industry. This paper proposes an interpretable DL-based TSA model to balance the TSA accuracy and transparency. The proposed method combines the strong nonlinear modelling capability of a deep neural network and the interpretability of a decision tree (DT). Through regularizing DL-based model with the average DT path length in the training process, the proposed interpretable DL-based TSA method can visually explain the TSA decision-making process. Simulation results have shown that the proposed method can deliver highly accurate TSA results and interpretable TSA decision-making rules, which can be used for designing preventive control actions. We focus on a fundamental task of detecting meaningful line structures, a.k.a., semantic line, in natural scenes. Many previous methods regard this problem as a special case of object detection and adjust existing object detectors for semantic line detection. However, these methods neglect the inherent characteristics of lines, leading to sub-optimal performance. Lines enjoy much simpler geometric property than complex objects and thus can be compactly parameterized by a few arguments. To better exploit the property of lines, in this paper, we incorporate the classical Hough transform technique into deeply learned representations and propose a one-shot end-to-end learning framework for line detection. By parameterizing lines with slopes and biases, we perform Hough transform to translate deep representations into the parametric domain, in which we perform line detection. Specifically, we aggregate features along candidate lines on the feature map plane and then assign the aggregated features to corresponding locations in the parametric domain. Consequently, the problem of detecting semantic lines in the spatial domain is transformed into spotting individual points in the parametric domain, making the post-processing steps, i.e., non-maximal suppression, more efficient. Furthermore, our method makes it easy to extract contextual line features that are critical for accurate line detection. In addition to the proposed method, we design an evaluation metric to assess the quality of line detection and construct a large scale dataset for the line detection task. Experimental results on our proposed dataset and another public dataset demonstrate the advantages of our method over previous state-of-the-art alternatives. Graph matching involves combinatorial optimization based on edge-to-edge affinity matrix, which can be generally formulated as Lawler's quadratic assignment problem (QAP). This paper presents a QAP network directly learning with the affinity matrix (equivalently the association graph) whereby the matching problem is translated into a constrained vertex classification task. The association graph is learned by an embedding network for vertex classification, followed by Sinkhorn normalization and a cross-entropy loss for end-to-end learning. We further improve the embedding model on association graph by introducing Sinkhorn based matching-aware constraint, as well as dummy nodes to deal with unequal sizes of graphs. To our best knowledge, this is one of the first network to directly learn with the general Lawler's QAP. In contrast, recent deep matching methods focus on the learning of node/edge features in two graphs respectively. We also show how to extend our network to hypergraph matching, and matching of multiple graphs. Experimental results on both synthetic graphs and real-world images show its effectiveness. For pure QAP tasks on synthetic data and QAPLIB benchmark, our method can perform competitively and even surpass state-of-the-art graph matching and QAP solvers with notable less time cost. This paper generalizes the Attention in Attention (AiA) mechanism, in P. Fang et al., 2019 by employing explicit mapping in reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces to generate attention values of the input feature map. The AiA mechanism models the capacity of building inter-dependencies among the local and global features by the interaction of inner and outer attention modules. Besides a vanilla AiA module, termed linear attention with AiA, two non-linear counterparts, namely, second-order polynomial attention and Gaussian attention, are also proposed to utilize the non-linear properties of the input features explicitly, via the second-order polynomial kernel and Gaussian kernel approximation. The deep convolutional neural network, equipped with the proposed AiA blocks, is referred to as Attention in Attention Network (AiA-Net). The AiA-Net learns to extract a discriminative pedestrian representation, which combines complementary person appearance and corresponding part features. Extensive ablation studies verify the effectiveness of the AiA mechanism and the use of non-linear features hidden in the feature map for attention design. Furthermore, our approach outperforms current state-of-the-art by a considerable margin across a number of benchmarks. Extracting channel state information (CSI) from WiFi signals is of proved high-effectiveness in locating human locations in a device-free manner. However, existing localization/positioning systems are mainly trained and deployed in a fixed environment, and thus they are likely to suffer from substantial performance declines when immigrating to new environments. In this paper, we address the fundamental problem of WiFi-based cross-environment indoor localization using a semi-supervised approach, in which we only have access to the annotations of the source environment while the data in the target environments are un-annotated. This problem is of high practical values in enabling a well-trained system to be scalable to new environments without tedious human annotations. To this end, a deep neural forest is introduced which unifies the ensemble learning with the representation learning functionalities from deep neural networks in an end-to-end trainable fashion. On top of that, an adversarial training strategy is further employed to learn environment-invariant feature representations for facilitating more robust localization. Extensive experiments on real-world datasets demonstrate the superiority of the proposed methods over state-of-the-art baselines. Due to the rapid development of deep learning, the performance of salient object detection has been constantly refreshed. Nevertheless, it is still challenging for existing methods to distinguish the location of salient objects and retain fine structural details. In this paper, a novel progressive dual-attention residual network (PDRNet) is proposed to exploit two complementary attention maps to guide residual learning, thus progressively refining prediction in a coarse-to-fine manner. We design a dual-attention residual module (DRM) to achieve residual refinement with the help of the dual attention (DA) scheme. Specifically, an attention map and its corresponding reverse attention map are used to make the network be aware of learning residual details from the perspective of the salient and non-salient regions, thus utilizing their complementarity to correct the mistakes of object parts and boundary details. Besides, a hierarchical feature screening module (HFSM) is designed to capture more powerful global contextual knowledge for locating salient objects. It establishes cross-scale skip connections among multi-scale features and utilizes the intra-channel dependency of these scales to enhance information interaction and feature representation. Extensive experiments have proved that our proposed PDRNet performs favorably against 18 state-of-the-art competitors on five benchmark datasets, demonstrating the effectiveness and superiority of our method. Deep autoencoder-based approaches have achieved significant improvements on restoring damaged images, yet they still suffer from artifacts due to the inadequate representation and inaccurate regularization of existing features. In this paper, we propose a dual-pyramidal inpainting framework called DPNet to address these two limitations, which seamlessly integrates sufficient feature learning and dynamic regularization within an autoencoder network. Specifically, to exhaustively extract multi-scale features, we adopt layer-wise pyramidal convolution in encoder, which provides an arbitrary combination pool of various receptive fields. Subsequently, to tackle the patch deterioration problem in previous cross-scale non-local schemes, we further propose a Pyramidal Attention Mechanism (PAM) in decoder to acquire finer patches directly from learned layers. Mutually benefited with pyramidal features extraction in encoder, the dissemination space for non-local pixels in our PAM is notably enlarged to pyramidal level, thus significantly benefiting the feature representation. Moreover, to avoid the mask error accumulation in existing works, a dynamic normalization mechanism utilizing the spatial mask information updated in encoder is introduced, which further ensures the feature integrity and consistency. Such a dual-pyramidal structure along with dynamic normalization significantly improve the inpainting quality, outperforming existing competitors. We observed that remarkable and impressive performance on image-based human pose estimation have been achieved by deep Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN). Nevertheless, directly applying these image-based models on videos is not only computionally intensive, but also may cause jitter and loss. The main reason is that the image-based models purely focus on the local features of individual frames and totally ignore the temporal information among adjacent frames. Some existing methods are proposed to address the temporal coherency issue. However, these methods need to be designed carefully and cannot be combined with existing image-based methods. In this paper, we propose a simple yet effective module to refine the estimated pose by exploiting the temporal coherency among the heatmaps of adjacent frames, which can be easily inserted into image-based networks as a plug-in. We show that the temporal coherency issue among the heatmap frames could be re-formulated as a graph path selection optimization problem. Moreover, to speed up the refinement process, we propose a hierarchical graph optimization to achieve the refinement from coarse to fine. Experimental results on two large-scale video pose estimation benchmarks show that our module can improve the performance with little speed loss when combined with image-based methods as an efficient plug-in. With the widespread use of deep learning in single object tracking task, mainstream tracking algorithms treat tracking as a combined classification and regression problem. Classification aims at locating an arbitrary target, and regression aims at estimating the corresponding bounding box. In this paper, we focus on regression and propose a novel box estimation network, which consists of a transformer encoder target pyramid guide (TPG) and transformer decoder target pyramid spread (TPS). Specifically, the transformer encoder TPG is designed to generate fine-grained prior knowledge with explicit representation for template targets. In contrast to the raw transformer encoder, we capture the visual dependence through local-global self-attention and deem the multi-scale target regions as the “local” region. Using this fine-grained prior knowledge, we design the transformer decoder TPS to spread it to the subsequent search regions with high affinity to accurately estimate the bounding boxes. Considering that self-attention fails to model information interaction across channels between the template target and search regions, we develop a channel-wise cross-attention block within the TPS as compensation. Extensive experiments on the OTB100, UAV123, NFS, VOT2020, VOT2021, LaSOT, LaSOT_ext, TrackingNet and GOT-10k benchmarks show that the proposed box estimation network outperforms most existing box estimation methods. Discriminative correlation filter (DCF)-based methods have demonstrated superior performance in UAV tracking via fusing multiple types of features and updating models online. However, most DCF-based trackers simply cascade different features, failing to fully take advantage of their complementary strength. In addition, online update strategies are limited to using a single and fixed learning rate, which often leads to model degradation when suffering tracking challenges. In this paper, we present an Auto-Perceiving Correlation Filter (APCF) which explicitly models the target and context with a novel Target State and Background Perception (TSBP) feature. Concretely, we first propose a simple yet effective State Evaluation Metric (SEM) to estimate target states by analyzing the spatial distribution of responses. Based on SEM, we extract TSBP features by adaptively selecting effective features depending on the current target state. Accordingly, a new online model update strategy is also introduced to avoid model degradation. Moreover, we further introduce a perception regularization term to make the extracted feature emphasis more on the target rather than background. Extensive experiments on four widely-used UAV benchmarks have well demonstrated the superiority of the proposed method compared with both DCF and deep learning based trackers while running at a high speed of 76.7 FPS on a single CPU. Recognition of thyroid glands and tissues of the neck is vital for screening related diseases in ultrasound videos. This task is subjective, challenging, and dependent on the experience of sonographer in current clinical practice. The purpose is to develop a fully automated thyroid gland and tissues of neck recognition framework to assist doctors in distinguishing the boundaries of different tissues. In this paper, we propose a novel deep learning framework that consists of a feature extraction network, region proposal network, object detection head, and spatial pyramid RoIAlign-based segmentation head. Designed spatial pyramid RoIAlign can efficiently capture local and global context features, and aggregates the multiple context information that makes the result much more reliable. A large dataset is constructed to train the proposed method. The performance is evaluated using the COCO metrics. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed deep learning method can effectively realize the automatic recognition of the thyroid gland and tissues of neck in ultrasound videos. Considering the clinical practical application scenarios, we developed an automatic recognition system of thyroid and neck tissue based on edge computing, which can expediently assist doctors in distinguishing the boundaries between different tissues. Learning how to capture long-range dependencies and restore spatial information of down-sampled feature maps are the basis of the encoder-decoder structure networks in medical image segmentation. U-Net based methods use feature fusion to alleviate these two problems, but the global feature extraction ability and spatial information recovery ability of U-Net are still insufficient. In this paper, we propose a Global Feature Reconstruction (GFR) module to efficiently capture global context features and a Local Feature Reconstruction (LFR) module to dynamically up-sample features, respectively. For the GFR module, we first extract the global features with category representation from the feature map, then use the different level global features to reconstruct features at each location. The GFR module establishes a connection for each pair of feature elements in the entire space from a global perspective and transfers semantic information from the deep layers to the shallow layers. For the LFR module, we use low-level feature maps to guide the up-sampling process of high-level feature maps. Specifically, we use local neighborhoods to reconstruct features to achieve the transfer of spatial information. Based on the encoder-decoder architecture, we propose a Global and Local Feature Reconstruction Network (GLFRNet), in which the GFR modules are applied as skip connections and the LFR modules constitute the decoder path. Most deep learning models for temporal regression directly output the estimation based on single input images, ignoring the relationships between different images. In this paper, we propose deep relation learning for regression, aiming to learn different relations between a pair of input images. Four non-linear relations are considered: “cumulative relation,” “relative relation,” “maximal relation” and “minimal relation.” These four relations are learned simultaneously from one deep neural network which has two parts: feature extraction and relation regression. We use an efficient convolutional neural network to extract deep features from the pair of input images and apply a Transformer for relation learning. The proposed method is evaluated on a merged dataset with 6,049 subjects with ages of 0–97 years using 5-fold cross-validation for the task of brain age estimation. The experimental results have shown that the proposed method achieved a mean absolute error (MAE) of 2.38 years, which is lower than the MAEs of 8 other state-of-the-art algorithms with statistical significance (p<0.05) in paired T-test (two-side). Histopathological tissue classification is a simpler way to achieve semantic segmentation for the whole slide images, which can alleviate the requirement of pixel-level dense annotations. Existing works mostly leverage the popular CNN classification backbones in computer vision to achieve histopathological tissue classification. In this paper, we propose a super lightweight plug-and-play module, named Pyramidal Deep-Broad Learning (PDBL), for any well-trained classification backbone to improve the classification performance without a re-training burden. For each patch, we construct a multi-resolution image pyramid to obtain the pyramidal contextual information. For each level in the pyramid, we extract the multi-scale deep-broad features by our proposed Deep-Broad block (DB-block). We equip PDBL in three popular classification backbones, ShuffLeNetV2, EfficientNetb0, and ResNet50 to evaluate the effectiveness and efficiency of our proposed module on two datasets (Kather Multiclass Dataset and the LC25000 Dataset). Experimental results demonstrate the proposed PDBL can steadily improve the tissue-level classification performance for any CNN backbones, especially for the lightweight models when given a small among of training samples (less than 10%). Text clustering is a critical step in text data analysis and has been extensively studied by the text mining community. Most existing text clustering algorithms are based on the bag-of-words model, which faces the high-dimensional and sparsity problems and ignores text structural and sequence information. Deep learning-based models such as convolutional neural networks and recurrent neural networks regard texts as sequences but lack supervised signals and explainable results. In this paper, we propose a deep feature-based text clustering (DFTC) framework that incorporates pretrained text encoders into text clustering tasks. This model, which is based on sequence representations, breaks the dependency on supervision. The experimental results show that our model outperforms classic text clustering algorithms and the state-of-the-art pretrained language model, i.e., BERT, on almost all the considered datasets. Online fault detection of insulators is a necessary requirement for the development of a smart grid, which directly affects the safety and reliability of power system operations. Breakage is an important factor causing insulator abnormalities, and a large number of image samples are often required for training to complete defect identification with the help of AI deep learning. In this paper, we propose a convolutional neural network ensemble implemented using small samples, data augmentation and transfer learning for insulator breakage detection. We used data augmentation to expand the small sample of 200 insulator images by 15 times to 3000 images, built a VGG16 transfer network, pre-trained the VGG16 network convolutional basis weights, and improved the training performance and efficiency of the model with freeze training and fine-tuning training. The training on 2700 images and testing results on 300 images show that the proposed method can achieve an accuracy of 0.9871 for insulator breakage recognition. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper presents a deep learning-based method for defect detection and classification of power distribution lines using video analysis. The first stage is dataset preparation in which different videos are recorded by a CoroCam 6D2 camera from distribution lines and labeled based on the defect type and the severity level of the defect. Then, a process is followed in such a way that a limited number of frames are used for processing, and power devices are detected in each frame using Faster R-CNN. The detector performance is improved by increasing the training dataset and changing the training hyper-parameters. Next, an equipment tracking technique is applied through the video frames. In the following, a method based on the classification of power equipment is presented. In this method, by corona color thresholding in all frames and applying a median filter over time, the connected components representing the corona are identified. Then, the frame containing the closest component to the component in the median image is selected. In the selected frame, the area around the component is cut and given to AlexNet or GoogleNet to determine the equipment type and the severity level of defect is determined. Also, the defective equipment phase is determined based on the insulators detected in the video. The proposed method not only performs better than the state-of-the-art but also is a practical method, and with the least dependence on environmental conditions, can automatically identify defects in distribution lines, even in videos containing several possible defective devices. Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) inspection has gradually replaced manual inspection of transmission tower, which produces many images. While it is laborious and time-consuming to manually analyze these images, there are also challenges in automatically detecting small-size defective components such as bolts in transmission tower images, due to problems including complex background, small size, and many similar objects of bolts. In this paper, by virtue of multi-scale features and context information, we propose a deep neural network named Camp-Net (Context Information and Multi-Scale Pyramid Network) to identify bolts defect in transmission tower images. First, multi-scale feature fusion combines deep features and shallow features in convolutional networks to detect small-size bolts. Second, context information fusion puts the information around bolts into the detection network to remove the disturbance of complex background and similar objects. An image dataset containing defective bolts and normal bolts is constructed for model training and testing. Experimental results show that bolts with loose pins and bolts without pins among fittings in transmission tower can be accurately identified with the proposed model. Chaos-based communications can be applied to high-speed vehicular information transmissions thanks to the anti-jamming and anti-interference capabilities of chaotic transmissions. In traditional practical chaotic systems, reference chaotic signals are required to be delivered to remove complex chaotic synchronization circuits. However, the direct transmission of reference signals will degrade the security performances, while interferences and noises imposed on the reference signals due to imperfect channel conditions will deteriorate the reliability performances. In order to enhance the reliability and security performances over vehicular channels such as the railway channel and the channels undergoing fast fadings, in this paper, we propose a deep learning (DL) aided intelligent OFDM-DCSK transceiver. In this design, no reference chaotic signals are delivered, and we propose to utilize the time-delay neural network (TDNN) to learn the chaotic maps, followed by the long short-term memory (LSTM) units to extract and exploit the correlations between chaotic modulated signals, and multiple fully connected layers (FCLs) to estimate the user bit data. With the aid of the constructed deep neural network (DNN), after the offline neural network training, the receiver can recover the transmitted information with lower bit error rate (BER) and enhance security performances. Theoretical performance is then analyzed for the proposed intelligent transceiver. Simulation results validate the proposed design, and demonstrate that the intelligent DL-based OFDM-DCSK system can achieve better BER and security performances over fast fading and railway channels compared with the benchmark systems.
