This paper presents a novel active power control scheme for SRMs that are used as S/G units at MEAs; the proposed method uses a vector-controlled SAF, facilitating the acceleration of the SRM during starter mode and the efficient power control of the SRG at various operational points during generator mode. Moreover, an energy storage unit is incorporated in the SAF, aiming at enhancing the SRM's starting torque production and taking full advantage of the SRG's energy generation capability, through the appropriate phases’ magnetization regulation that is imposed by the developed adaptive SAF vector control. In addition, the proposed scheme provides enhanced FRTC during both modes of operation. The mathematical analysis is verified through MATLAB/Simulink simulations, while the performance of the S/G concept under study is evaluated via real-time CHIL tests, with the use of the dSPACE 1202 (MicroLabBox) platform and the 16-bit dsPIC30F4011 microcontroller. This paper presents frequency domain (FD) Norton-type equivalents of single- and three-phase photovoltaic (PV) generators, aimed at transient calculations. The proposed equivalents can be interfaced with a general frequency-dependent network and/or nonlinear loads and include voltage/current sources representing initial conditions aimed at partitioned-time transient simulation. The transient solution is performed via the numerical Laplace transform (NLT) in a sequential scheme by using time sub-windows with corresponding initial conditions and using reduced number of samples. The proposed approach overcomes the issue of computationally heavy simulations as in classical implementations of NLT. This paper focuses on the issue of network connectedness (NC) in security-constrained optimal transmission switching problems, which is complicated by branch contingencies and corrective line switching. Two criteria are firstly proposed with the principle of preserving NC as much as possible within reasonable limits. By extending the electrical flow based NC constraints, a proposition is derived to associate different cases of NC with the optimum of a linear program, yielding the mathematical formulation of the NC criteria. By Karush-Kuhn-Tucker conditions, this formulation is further transformed into a tractable version which can be incorporated with existing SCOTS models without affecting the applicability of original solution approaches. In this paper, a fault-tolerant control of a symmetrical six-phase induction generator based on a variable structure strategy is experimentally tested and compared with a classical proportional-integral controller. For this, we use a linear feedback sliding mode controller with switched feedback gains in such a way to control the inner current loops of this machine. One main drawback of the classical three-phase induction generator is that it is no longer possible to generate electrical power if only one phase is lost on the stator side. To overcome this issue, we will use a squirrel cage six-phase induction machine that can still operate when at least three phases remain on the stator side. This article proposes to use a variable structure control in order to cope with unbalanced currents and also maintain the generation of power when a loss of the stator's phases occurs. The proposed controller shows its robustness and good regulation performance in healthy and faulty modes. Renewable energy is an advisable choice to reduce fuel consumption and $\rm CO_{2}$ emission. Therein, wind energy and solar energy are the most promising contributors to reach this goal. Although the hybrid wind/solar system has been widely studied, the real-time current sharing based on their maximum capacities is rarely achieved in terms of seconds. Based on this, this paper proposes an accurate current sharing and voltage regulation approach in hybrid wind/solar systems, which is based on distributed adaptive dynamic programming approach. Firstly, the equivalent wind/solar model is built, which is an indispensable preprocessing to achieve the complementary between wind energy and solar energy. Therein, the wind energy and solar energy can output relative current according to their respective capacity ratio, which ensure the maximum utilization ratio of renewable energy source. Furthermore, current sharing and voltage regulation problem is switched into optimal control problem. Under this effect, each source agent aims to obtain the optimal control variable and achieve accurate current sharing/voltage regulation. Moreover, an adaptive dynamic programming approach based on Bellman principle is proposed. It can achieve accurate current sharing and voltage regulation. This paper proposes a new passive Islanding detection approach for the Inverter Interfaced Distributed Generators (IIDGs) operating under different control modes. First, a novel index is formulated using Root Mean Square (RMS) value of the voltage and the frequency information, acquired at the Point of Common Coupling (PCC) of the target DG. The index is then post-processed by estimating the number of peaks and valleys $(N_{p_{k}-v})$ in a cycle using the sliding window concept, which indicates the occurrence of an event. Finally, the nature of the event, i.e., Islanding or non-Islanding, is decided by exploiting the two statistical features viz., Square of RMS $(S_{RMS})$ of $N_{p_{k}-v}$ and Average Crest Factor $(ACF^{m})$ of the proposed index. The performance of the proposed method (P-IDM) is demonstrated through comprehensive studies in PSCAD/EMTDC for the single-bus and IEEE 34-bus Active Distribution System (ADS). Also, the real-time validation is performed for the IEEE 34-bus using Controller Hardware-in-the-Loop (CHIL) setup comprising of Real-Time Digital Simulator (RTDS) and dSPACE1104. The simulation and hardware results for different test systems indicate that the proposed scheme, being generic in nature, sustains its efficacy under various interface controls of IIDGs. Finally, a comparative assessment with the other existing Signal Processing (SP) based passive methodologies shows the supremacy of the proposed method in terms of accuracy and faster detection. In this paper, a circulating-current-excited switched reluctance generator system with the diode rectifier is comparatively studied with a field-current-separated switched reluctance generator. By using a DC power source connected in series with the winding to provide the circulating current, a controllable excitation field is established in the proposed generator. To highlight the influence of this DC voltage source, the injected field current of the field-current-separated generator is kept the same as the circulating current of the circulating-current-excited generator. Then, both advantages and disadvantages of the generators are summarized. The circulating-current-excited switched reluctance generator system inherits both the advantages of good reliability of the separated-winding generator by using the diode rectifier and low copper loss of the integrated-winding machine by combining the AC and DC current in one set of windings. Furthermore, two more practically conventional field-current-separated generators are also compared with the proposed generator in terms of the external characteristics. This paper addresses the incorporation of transmission switching in the contingency-constrained unit commitment problem within the context of co-optimized electricity markets for energy and reserves. The proposed generation scheduling model differs from existing formulations due to the joint consideration of four major complicating factors. First, transmission switching actions are considered both in the pre- and post-contingency states, thereby requiring binary post-contingency variables. Secondly, generation scheduling and transmission switching actions are co-optimized. In addition, the time-coupled operation of generating units is precisely characterized. Finally, practical features of modern power systems, such as uncertain nodal net injections and the operation of energy storage, are also considered. The proposed model is cast as a challenging mixed-integer program for which the off-the-shelf software customarily used for simpler models may lead to intractability even for moderately-sized instances. In order to circumvent this computational issue, this paper presents an enhanced and novel application of an exact nested column-and-constraint generation algorithm featuring the inclusion of valid constraints to improve the overall computational performance. Numerical simulations based on the IEEE 118- and 300-bus systems demonstrate the effective performance of the proposed approach as well as its economic and operational advantages over existing models disregarding post-contingency transmission switching. The possibility of operating distributed generation (DG) in islanded mode brings several benefits but still faces some problems, especially related to the transition from a grid-connected to an islanded operating condition. When connected to the main grid, DG units operate in PQ mode. During this transition, their controls must be changed to regulate frequency and voltage. The delay for islanding detection, associated with abrupt changes in the control references, may result in large and detrimental transients. This paper proposes a new control structure for a distributed synchronous generator (DSG) to allow a smooth transition from the grid-connected to the islanded operation mode. The proposed control structure uses a compensation loop that was conceived based on the main ideas of the anti-windup bumpless transfer (AWBT) theory (although it is not, strictly speaking, an AWBT controller). The results show that the proposed structure ensures smaller excursions of the DSG variables during the transition and, therefore, the possibility of a successful formation of the islanded system is extended to a wider range of operating conditions. In the face of increasing natural disasters and an aging grid, utilities need to optimally choose investments to the existing infrastructure to promote resiliency. This paper presents a new investment decision optimization model to minimize unserved load over the recovery time and improve grid resilience to extreme weather event scenarios. Our optimization model includes a network power flow model which decides generator status and generator dispatch, optimal transmission switching (OTS) during the multi-time period recovery process, and an investment decision model subject to a given budget. Investment decisions include the hardening of transmission lines, generators, and substations. Our model uses a second order cone programming (SOCP) relaxation of the AC power flow model and is compared to the classic DC power flow approximation. A case study is provided on the 73-bus RTS-GMLC test system for various investment budgets and multiple hurricane scenarios to highlight the difference in optimal investment decisions between the SOCP model and the DC model, and demonstrate the advantages of OTS in resiliency settings. Results indicate that the network models yield different optimal investments, unit commitment, and OTS decisions, and an AC feasibility study indicates our SOCP resiliency model is more accurate than the DC model. This paper proposes a multifunctional control strategy and associated control algorithms for distributed wind-turbine (WT) based nano-grids connected to a distorted utility-grid. The contribution is on a new strategy with innovative control algorithms to coordinate multiple converters for a multitasking operation of the nano-grids. The novelty is on a unique control design with feasibilities: maximizing the generated power from WT, maintaining power quality in both ac- and dc-sides under critical conditions of the power grid, and improving power quality against distortion from local nonlinear loads under a reduced switching frequency. A robust fast-dynamic predictive control method is developed for current controllers to fulfil the multifunction. Unconstrained deadbeat control inputs are derived in twofold targets: ensuring fast dynamic response and significantly reducing both the computation and switching frequency for finite predictive control. The control system is applied on a permanent-magnet synchronous generator (PMSG) WT-based nano-grid connected to a distorted utility-grid. An OPAL-RT-based real-time platform is used for comparative studies among the proportional integration (PI) control, finite predictive control (FS-MPC), and proposed control method. The performance verification exhibits the power quality improvement in both the nano- and utility-grids under critical conditions via high-performed regulation of currents, voltages, reactive power, and rotor-speed of the PMSG-WT. X-ray computed tomography (CT) uses different filter kernels to highlight different structures. Since the raw sinogram data is usually removed after the reconstruction, in case there is additional need for other types of kernel images that were not previously generated, the patient may need to be scanned again. Accordingly, there exists increasing demand for post-hoc image domain conversion from one kernel to another without sacrificing the image quality. In this paper, we propose a novel unsupervised continuous kernel conversion method using cycle-consistent generative adversarial network (cycleGAN) with adaptive instance normalization (AdaIN). Even without paired training data, not only can our network translate the images between two different kernels, but it can also convert images along the interpolation path between the two kernel domains. We also show that the quality of generated images can be further improved if intermediate kernel domain images are available. Experimental results confirm that our method not only enables accurate kernel conversion that is comparable to supervised learning methods, but also generates intermediate kernel images in the unseen domain that are useful for hypopharyngeal cancer diagnosis. The belt-driven starter/generator (BSG), as a cost-effective solution, has been widely employed in hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) to improve the stability and reduce the fuel consumption of the vehicles. It can provide more than 10% reduction in CO2. Electrical machine is the heart of the BSG system, which is functioned both as motor and generator. In order to optimize both aspects of motor and generator simultaneously, this paper presents a new multimode optimization method for the switched reluctance machines. First, the general multimode concept and optimization method are presented. The switched reluctance motor and the switched reluctance generator are the two operation modes. The optimization models are established based on motor and generator functions. Sensitivity analysis, surrogate models and genetic algorithms are employed to improve the efficiency of the multimode optimization. Then, a design example of a segmented-rotor switched reluctance machine (SSRM) is investigated. Seven design variables and four driving modes are considered in the multiobjective optimization model. The Kriging model is employed to approximate the finite element model (FEM) in the optimization. Finally, the optimization results are depicted, and an optimal solution is selected. Natural calamities always have been a serious threat to energy systems. In this regard, this paper constitutes a stochastic mixed integer linear programming (SMILP) model to enhance the resilience of power distribution systems to deal with disastrous events. In particular, the proposed model is developed to enhance both survivability and restoration capability of distribution systems. In this regard, to increase the preparedness of the power distribution system, the system operator reconfigures the network by utilizing remote-control switches (RCSs), manual switches (MSs), and distributed generations (DGs) before the natural calamity hits. The proposed model contemplates the traveling time of crew teams to the MS sites in the transportation system in order to achieve the best switching sequence. In addition, it pre-positions the crews and mobile emergency generators (MEGs) in staging locations to hasten the likely post-disturbance operations. To do so, likely post-event operations are included in the model using the scenario generation technique. To validate the performance of the developed model a distribution system is employed. This paper tackles key industry needs in the scope of the AC Security-Constrained Optimal Power Flow (SCOPF) framework, specifically two major challenging requirements regarding generators’ post-contingency behavior: the (droop-based) frequency response and the voltage control mechanism (including PV/PQ switching). To this end, and to obtain a sufficiently accurate solution with a reasonable computational burden, we propose an approximation approach to SCOPF which extends significantly an existing algorithm with novel modelling elements: a continuous formulation to model generators’ post-contingency responses based on successive approximations, a technique to evaluate the viability of contingencies with respect to the base case set-points, and the complexity reduction of all post-contingency states through network compression and power flow piecewise linearization. All new features are validated both separately and in unison, to monitor the improvement of the solution time and the potential degradation of the solution's quality. The proposed approach is successfully applied to three power system network models, the largest of which consists of 2,000 buses and more than 3,000 contingencies. The huge untapped energy from ocean waves is one of the ideal solutions for world energy crisis. This paper proposes a linear-generator-based direct power conversion plant model to generate the electrical energy from ocean waves. The linear generator output is of variable magnitude and variable frequency in nature. In this paper, this variable output is converted to fixed dc voltage by using a diode bridge rectifier and a dc-link capacitor. The linear generator along with a diode bridge and a capacitor forms a wave power unit. These wave power units can be connected in series and parallel to meet the power ratings. A reliable multilevel inverter is fed from the wave power units to ensure uninterrupted tapping of power from this abundant renewable energy source. The reliable inverter operation is analyzed under open- and short-circuit faults in switches by reconfiguring the carrier waves of sine pulsewidth modulation during fault conditions. A fault detection algorithm using a single sensor at the output is also proposed to detect the faults in the switches of the proposed reliable inverter. The proposed plant model with a linear generator and a reliable inverter is simulated using ANSYS MAXWELL and MATLAB/Simulink. The plant model is tested using a programmable ac source for emulating the linear generator and the developed prototype of the diode bridge rectifier and the reliable multilevel inverter. This paper proposes a new developed switched-capacitor converter to achieve high-voltage pulses with adjustable voltage level and frequency. The proposed topology generates repetitive high-voltage pulses by using low-voltage power supply with reduced number of components, including power semiconductors and capacitor. Therefore, a converter based on switched-capacitor units with high voltage gain and high efficiency can be achieved. Operation principles and design steps of the converter as well as comparative study with conventional converters are described in this paper. The co-optimization of security-constrained unit commitment and dispatchable transmission network is a large-scale and computationally complex optimization problem that brings big challenges for the traditional centralized and/or master–slave based decomposition approaches. This paper proposes a fully parallel approach to achieve an efficient and fast solution while considering post-contingency corrective actions. In this paper, the original co-optimization problem is decomposed into six major solution modules for unit commitment, optimal power flow, and transmission switching in base case and contingencies, respectively. Moreover, each major solution module is further decomposed by unit, period, dispatchable line, and/or contingency to make the proposed approach favorable in a fully parallel computing environment. This paper discusses a novel methodology to increase the voltage droop compensation range in generalized solid-state bipolar high-voltage Marx modulators with one resonant stage. To maintain the modularity characteristic of bipolar Marx modulators, the imbedding of additional resonant stages is not straightforward. Nevertheless, this paper proposes to add a second resonant stage to the already existing resonant-type voltage droop compensation stage. This second stage increases the voltage droop compensation percentage of a generalized solid-state bipolar Marx generator. The compensation of the bipolar pulse voltage droop is now achieved by adding two auxiliary synchronous compensation resonant voltages, to the output capacitive decaying voltage. Simulation and experimental results are presented for six Marx plus two resonant stages, 16% voltage droop, with 3-kV pulse amplitude, 100- $\mu \text{s}$ pulsewidth, 40-ms relaxation time, and 10-Hz pulse repetition rate. This paper studies the optimal transmission switching (OTS) problem for power systems, where certain lines are fixed (uncontrollable) and the remaining ones are controllable via on/off switches. The goal is to identify a topology of the power grid that minimizes the cost of the system operation while satisfying the physical and operational constraints. Most of the existing methods for the problem are based on first converting the OTS into a mixed-integer linear program (MILP) or mixed-integer quadratic program (MIQP), and then iteratively solving a series of its convex relaxations. The performance of these methods depends heavily on the strength of the MILP or MIQP formulations. In this paper, it is shown that finding the strongest variable upper and lower bounds to be used in an MILP or MIQP formulation of the OTS based on the big- $M$ or McCormick inequalities is NP-hard. Furthermore, it is proven that unless $P=NP$ , there is no constant-factor approximation algorithm for constructing these variable bounds. Despite the inherent difficulty of obtaining the strongest bounds in general, a simple bound strengthening method is presented to strengthen the convex relaxation of the problem when there exists a connected spanning subnetwork of the system with fixed lines. With the proposed bound strengthening method, remarkable improvements in the runtime of the mixed-integer solvers and the optimality gaps of the solutions are achieved for medium- and large-scale real-world systems. This paper presents the design and construction of a sample of Marx pulsed generator based on boost converter (BC) pulse-forming networks (BCPFNs). BCPFN is used instead of the conventional Marx floors for constructing this pulsed generator. BCPFN is carried out by connecting inductors and capacitors in series and parallel modes, respectively, by using solid-state switches, and during this procedure the pulsed generator converts to BC temporarily and increases the voltage of capacitors uniformly to a considerable value. This technique causes an increase in the discharging voltage level to the load that is many times more than its dc voltage source by charging the capacitors to a greater level. In order to take advantage of the benefits of Marx generator and PFN, this paper suggests a new circuit with the minimum number of switches. It means, to compose BCPFN and Marx, we have tried to design the circuit with fewer switches and instead of it we have achieved our desired performance with changing the operating mode in the states of BC, PFN, BCPFN, and BCPFN Marx. The results are simulated with MATLAB software. At the end, the experimental results of the construction of the above-mentioned system at low-power levels are presented, and the topology’s accuracy is proved by comparing them to the results of simulation. Event-triggered control (ETC) is becoming increasingly popular in load frequency control (LFC) operation in power systems. So far, the existing literature has primarily focused on load disturbance rejection in face of communication delay without considering much on networked-induced measurement disturbances and messages sent. In this paper, we study the LFC operation as a problem of networked control system and propose, for the first time, an ETC based switching approach for frequency regulation. We derive delay-dependent conditions to obtain the lower bound on inter-event time during event-trigger mechanism which assures the robust stability under networked induced time-varying delays and measurement disturbance and reduction in the amount of sent measurements. The effectiveness of the proposed approach is verified via numerical examples based on single-, two-area power systems and single-area with electric vehicle (EV) participation. Boosting the resilience of power systems is one of the core requirements of smart grid. In this paper, an integrated resilience response framework is proposed, which not only links the situational awareness with resilience enhancement, but also provides effective and efficient responses in both preventive and emergency states. The core of the proposed framework is a two-stage robust mixed-integer optimization model, whose mathematical formulation is presented in this paper as well. To solve the above model, an algorithm based on the nested column-and-constraint generation decomposition is provided, and computational efficiency improvement techniques are proposed. Preventive response in this paper considers generator re-dispatch and topology switching, while emergency response includes generator re-dispatch, topology switching and load shedding. Several numerical simulations validate the effectiveness of the proposed framework and the efficiency of the solution methodology. Key findings include the following: 1) in terms of enhancing power grid resilience, the integrated resilience response is preferable to both independent preventive response and independent emergency response; 2) the power grid resilience could be further enhanced by utilizing topology switching in the integrated resilience response. This paper proposes a guaranteed cost control method for uncertain networked control systems with a hybrid communication scheme. First, a hybrid communication scheme including time-triggered control and periodic event-triggered control (ETC) is presented for the system under consideration. The major features of the proposed scheme include three aspects: 1) instead of a fixed switching process, the switching between two triggering methods is stochastic satisfying Bernoulli distribution; 2) the condition of ETC utilizes a more recently transmission data packet, which results in reducing the transmission frequency of sampled data than some existing ones; and 3) Zeno phenomenon can be excluded since the minimum interevent time is implicity denoted by the sampling period. Second, the closed-loop system subject to the hybrid communication scheme and network-induced delay is modeled as an uncertain stochastic system with an interval time-varying delay. Two theorems are presented for the robustly mean-square stability and guaranteed cost controller design of the derived system. Then, a minimization problem is proposed to optimize the upper bound of cost function, in which the trigger parameters and feedback gain can be designed simultaneously. Bayesian inference is an effective approach for solving statistical learning problems, especially with uncertainty and incompleteness. However, Bayesian inference is a computing-intensive task whose efficiency is physically limited by the bottlenecks of conventional computing platforms. In this paper, a spintronics-based stochastic computing (SC) approach is proposed for efficient Bayesian inference. The inherent stochastic switching behaviors of spintronic devices are exploited to build a stochastic bitstream generator (SBG) for SC with hybrid CMOS/magnetic tunnel junction (MTJ) circuits design. Aiming to improve the inference efficiency, an SBG sharing strategy is leveraged to reduce the required SBG array scale by integrating a switch network between SBG array and SC logic. A device-to-architecture level framework is proposed to evaluate the performance of spintronics-based Bayesian inference system (SPINBIS). Experimental results on data fusion applications have shown that SPINBIS could improve the energy efficiency about $12 {\times }$ than MTJ-based approach with 45% design area overhead and about $26 {\times }$ than FPGA-based approach. This paper presents a methodology for generating restoration sequences in distribution systems and microgrids with emphasis on deriving optimal switching times for remote control switches. Microgrid architecture considered are assumed to be operating in islanded single master mode. Control methods for handling the unbalance inherent in distribution systems using single-phase controlled PQ inverters were developed and incorporated in the proposed method. The problem of considering simultaneously both energy optimization and dynamic stability of the system, which is lacking in existing methods, was addressed by studying the transient behavior of microgrids based on extended electromagnetic transients program (EMTP) simulations and then approximate and incorporate these behaviors into the optimization formulation for restoration. The approach is based on multi-objective optimization of final restored load and total restoration time. The methodology was studied on a modified IEEE 123 node test feeder. An EMTP simulation in PSCAD of the formed microgrids was used to validate the accuracy of the dynamic and steady-state characteristics of the resulting systems. By considering the transient behavior of distributed generators (DGs) during restoration, a better restoration sequence that does not trigger protection relays could be realized. This paper presents a model predictive current control (MPCC) for three-phase four-switch converters (TPFSC) connected to surface permanent magnet synchronous generators (SPMSGs) in oscillating water column (OWC) wave energy plants, that brings some benefits over the existing control methods used in this type of plants. The proposed MPCC for TPFSC follows the current references with great accuracy, whereas the switching frequency of the insulated-gate bipolar transistor (IGBTs) is fixed and low. This method minimizes the current reference tracking error, and its fast response makes it suitable for the power take-off systems present in wave energy converters. Furthermore, the system features a fast capacitor voltage offset suppression control. The dynamic performance and the voltage offset control of the proposed strategy for TPFSC feeding a SPMSG is evaluated in the Simulink environment. Later, experimental studies are carried out on an 8.7 kW laboratory SPMSG prototype. Nanosecond electroporation of cell organelles is being studied since more than a decade, but it is still not entirely understood. Unique prototype hardware equipment and challenging measuring methods may also be a contributing reason for this situation. In the scope of this paper, we improve the performance of the high-voltage nanosecond pulse generator by introducing silicon carbide (SiC) mosfets. We developed a new high-voltage diode opening switch (DOS)—nanosecond pulse generator for laboratory use for in vitro experiments in electroporation cuvettes. Analysis and comparison of the most commonly used switching technologies in pulse generators were made. The device is designed by two parallel two-stage Marx-bank circuits with SiC mosfets that generates up to 200 A in the resonant network. A driving circuit for stable simultaneous switching of SiC mosfets was developed. The developed generator can deliver from 500 V to more than 6 kV, approximately 8 ns pulses to a 50 Ω load. Even though the amplitude of the output pulse is not as high as expected, the multiplication factor $V_{\text{OUT}}/V_{\text{IN}}$ is still approximately 9, which is an improvement compared to the previously published linear DOS generator. Intentional controlled islanding (ICI) and black start allocation (BSA) are two examples of problems in the power systems literature that have been formulated as mixed integer programs (MIPs) and allow reconfiguration of the power system topology. A key consideration in both of these problems is that each island that appears after a reconfiguration must have at least one energized generator. In this paper, we examine three alternative MIP formulations for this restriction, show their equivalence, and prove that two of them are stronger in terms of their linear programming relaxation than the formulation most commonly used in the power systems literature. Since the time to solve MIPs can vary significantly between equivalent formulations, we also present computational experiments on the IEEE test systems for the ICI and BSA problems. We observe that a polynomially separable, exponential in size, strong formulation yields the best performance for the BSA problem and exhibits a comparable performance to a linear in size, weak formulation for the ICI problem. Marx generator using all-solid-state devices has been studied for many years. Higher parameters are always the demand for new applications. Traditional all-solid-state Marx generator can output high voltage due to its series topology, but the current is always limited by the switch. In this paper, a stage-stage paralleled topology of Marx generator for high current has been proposed. Topology structure and driving mode comparison for current balance have been analyzed. The paralleled driving mode for the current balance and the shaping waveform has been proposed. For experiment, a four-stage-four-paralleled Marx generator with metal–oxide–semiconductor field-effect transistors (MOSFETs) has been constructed with output pulses 2.2 kV, 730 A (depending on the load), rise time of 31 ns, fall time of 56 ns, and adjustable pulsewidth from 400 to 800 ns. Compulsators are ac generators which are used for electromagnetic launch applications over the past few decades. This paper presents the work carried out by the authors to design a compulsator for a railgun which has been built and tested with a capacitor bank of 20 kJ as the pulsed-power source in the author’s laboratory. The generator topology selected for the compulsator is a single phase, two-pole machine with iron core and passive compensation. The design is based on the criterion of achieving maximum projectile exit velocity with the additional condition that natural current zero is synchronized with the instant of the projectile’s exit. The effect of varying the different parameters of the compulsator on the performance of the system has also been studied and discussed in this paper. This paper proposes a novel open-winding brushless doubly-fed reluctance generator (OW-BDFRG) with dual two-level converters in order to reduce the converter rating and switching frequency for large-scale wind turbine applications. The new converter topology is equivalent to a three-level converter directly connected to the control winding of typical BDFRG. The OW-BDFRG system with this topology structure requires lower converter rating and switching frequency, and has a more flexible control mode, better operation performance, and fault redundancy capability. For the OW-BDFRG, this paper also proposes a new control scheme combining direct power control (DPC) with sliding mode variable structure (SMVS) control to implement the power tracking. The voltage-vector switching table of DPC is redesigned according to the error signals of active and reactive powers of the power winding, as well as the sector location of control winding flux. The active and reactive powers of the OW-BDFRG can be directly decoupled and independently controlled by properly selecting the switching voltage vectors. The novelty of this paper lies in an OW-BDFRG topology driven by dual two-level converters to improve the system characteristics, and the use of SMVS control to improve the DPC accuracy and robustness to parameter variations. Repetitive high pulsed electric field (PEF) is an effective method to kill microorganisms and bacteria in water treatment applications. The PEF can be generated by applying high-power electromagnetic pulse across the sample to be treated. There are two main types of high-voltage pulse generators, namely, unipolar and bipolar. In this paper, a full-bridge submodule-based modular high-voltage pulse generator, having the ability to generate unipolar and bipolar high-voltage pulses with different shapes from a relatively low-voltage input dc supply, is proposed. In the proposed configuration, relatively low-voltage insulated gate bipolar transistors (IGBTs) are required to generate the high-voltage bipolar pulses. A thyristor rated at the level of the pulsed output voltage is required in the proposed configuration to bypass the load during the charging process of capacitors. In the proposed approach, a thyristor is used instead of the self-commutated high-voltage switch (e.g., series-connected IGBTs), as thyristors are available with high-voltage ratings and possess inherent reverse voltage blocking capability. A detailed illustration of the proposed configuration and its operational concept are introduced in this paper. Simulation and experimental results are presented to validate the proposed approach. Bipolar junction transistors (BJTs) have been widely studied and used in nanosecond high-voltage pulse generators due to the advantages of fast switching speed and high repetitive frequency. Usually the Marx-type circuit is used to raise the peak value of output pulses. In this paper, a traditional BJT-Marx circuit using charging resistors is analyzed theoretically and experimentally. Based on the results, the structure of a circuit is changed to decrease the isolation voltage across the resistors, and diodes are used to replace charging resistors to block capacitors discharging to resistors. Experimental results showed that the three Marx generators proposed in this paper output pulses with higher voltage amplitude, and the last improved circuit outputs pulses with faster fall times at a higher efficiency. This paper shows how to use modular Marx multilevel converter diode ( \textM^3 CD) modules to apply unipolar or bipolar high-voltage pulses for pulsed power applications. The \textM^3 CD cells allow the assembly of a multilevel converter without needing complex algorithms and parameter measurement to balance the capacitor voltages. This paper also explains how to supply all the modular cells in order to ensure galvanic isolation between control circuits and power circuits. In this paper, we discuss and demonstrate the potential of normally-on GaN high-electron-mobility transistors (HEMTs) as opening switches in miniaturized pulsed-power circuits. The high-breakdown electric field of GaN (~3 MV/cm) makes it possible to fabricate high-voltage devices in small dimensions, resulting in smaller parasitics and faster switching times. GaN HEMTs as opening switches are compatible with inductive topologies, which offer more than one order of magnitude higher energy density than capacitive topologies, allowing further miniaturization of pulsed-power systems. In this work, we demonstrate the application of fabricated 1.5-kV normally-on GaN HEMTs on an inductive switching topology, resulting in 300-fold voltage step-up, which makes it possible to generate high-voltage pulses with a low-voltage dc source in miniaturized circuits. In this paper, a modular topology is presented for generating high-voltage pulsed power. The proposed structure consists of Marx-type modules, which are based on the switched-capacitor (SC) concept. This module receives an input voltage and, depending on the requirement of the user, produces an output voltage either equal to the input or twice as much as the input voltage, which shows the flexibility of our model. The capability of the module to produce a doubled output makes it appropriate for applications with low input voltage sources. Also, the topology has the capability of generating combined wide and narrow pulses. The topology was simulated in MATLAB Simulink and a laboratory setup was built to test its operation. The plasma produced by a pulsed generator is an efficient tool for an airflow control. In this paper, a nanosecond pulsed generator constructed with a fast solid-state switch is designed for triggering synchronous discharges in plasma synthetic jet (PSJ) actuators connected in series. The generator delivers high-voltage pulses with a peak voltage varying from 0 to 20 kV, a rise time of 20 ns, a full-width at half-maximum of 200 ns, and a wide range of pulse-repetition rate varying from 0 to 5.5 kHz. It is proved that this generator is able to trigger synchronous discharges in three PSJ actuators in atmospheric air with a peak discharge current more than 90 A and a deposited energy per pulse of 39 mJ. A schlieren system is used to observe the airflow dynamics, which shows the high synchronization among the three PSJ actuators with a time triggering delay of about 20 ns. The synchronous operation of three PSJ actuators produces a plasma jet with a maximum velocity of 60 m/s and a precursor wave with a velocity of 350 m/s. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Optimal power management of shipboard power system for failure mode (OPMSF) is a significant and challenging problem considering the safety of system and person. Many existing works focused on the transient-time recovery without consideration of the operating cost and the voyage plan. In this paper, the OPMSF problem is formulated considering the mid-time scheduling and the faults at bus and generator. Two-side adjustment methods including the load shedding and the reconfiguration are coordinated for reducing the fault effects. To address the formulated non-convex problem, the travel equality constraint and fractional energy efficiency operation indicator limitation are transformed into the convex forms. Then, considering the infeasibility scenario affected by faults, a further relaxation is adopted to formulate a new problem with feasibility guaranteed. Furthermore, a sufficient condition is derived to ensure that the new problem has the same optimal solution as the original one. Because of the mixed-integer nonlinear feature, an optimal management algorithm based on Benders decomposition (BD) is developed to solve the new one. Due to the slow convergence caused by the time-coupled constraints, a low-complexity near-optimal algorithm based on BD is proposed. In this paper, a high-voltage unipolar pulse power generator is introduced for electroporation applications. Operating principle of the proposed structure is based on the buck–boost (BB) converter. The generator is comprised of parallel modules connected to the converter through an SCR and is supplied by a low-voltage dc source. Each module consists of an insulated gate bipolar transistor (IGBT), two diodes, and a capacitor. In fact, the proposed topology is a combination of the Marx generator and BB (MG-BB) converter. In comparison with other modular MG-BB structures, the proposed topology achieves interesting advantages including simpler structure, reduction of IGBTs voltage rating, and reducing number of components (inductors and switches). In order to clarify the features of the proposed structure, it has been compared with other unipolar MGs considering different aspects including the number of circuit components, number of required input supplies, amplitude of the output pulse, and the maximum voltage across switches and diodes. To validate the effectiveness of the structure, simulation and experimental results are presented. Inadequate frequency response can arise due to a high penetration of wind turbine generators (WTGs) and requires a frequency support function to be integrated in the WTG. The appropriate design for these controllers to ensure adequate response has not been investigated thoroughly. In this paper, a safety supervisory control (SSC) is proposed to synthesize the supportive modes in WTGs to guarantee performance. The concept, region of safety (ROS), is stated for safe switching synthesis. An optimization formula is proposed to calculate the largest ROS. By assuming a polynomial structure, the problem can be solved by a sum of squares program. A feasible result will generate a polynomial, the zero sublevel set of which represents the ROS and is employed as the safety supervisor. A decentralized communication architecture is proposed for small-scale systems. Moreover, a scheduling loop is suggested so that the supervisor updates its boundary with respect to the renewable penetration level to be robust with respect to variations in system inertia. The proposed controller is first verified on a single-machine three-phase nonlinear microgrid, and then implemented on the IEEE 39-bus system. A large grid-connected private industrial and residential 11 kV network in northern Australia has its own 11 kV diesel generators to supply essential loads during grid supply outages. The generators each have a neutral earthing resistor (NER). When islanded from the grid, one NER provides the system reference. Significant circulating current was causing overheating of the NER. Self-powered realization for synchronous switching circuits is a hot spot for piezoelectric vibration energy harvesting. Two typical kinds of switches, bipolar junction transistor (BJT) or metal–oxide semiconductor field effect transistor (MOSFET) are popularly used without a clear understanding about the performance difference. In this paper, comparative investigations about adopting these two types of switches based on a case study are performed. It is determined that the performance difference comes from three aspects: the gate parasitic capacitance, the turning-on threshold, and the driven mechanism. In particular, the third one imposes a critical influence on the performance. Investigations are performed on the self-powered synchronous switching circuit of two possible methods: with electronic breakers or with external control units. The results from simulations and experiments show that the current-driven mechanism limits the available performance in the case of the BJT switch in comparison with the case of the MOSFET switch. The difference is especially obvious for the cases of large piezoelectric capacitance and open-circuit voltage. A preliminary design guideline is concluded that the MOSFET is probably a better choice with the same voltage and current ratings in most cases. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
