In this paper, a new modulation strategy based on the carrier-based switching strategy for the non-square direct matrix converters (MC) is proposed to control the active power of distributed generation (DG) units. In this strategy, the active power of DGs is controlled by the central input current control of the non-square direct MC independent from the voltage and frequency. Conventionally, each DG has a converter, and for supplying a load with N number of DGs, N number of converters are needed and each converter has its own modulation switching and control strategy to control the power output of each DG. Needless to say, in a microgrid with N number of DGs, the control strategy of each converter has more complex structure than that of a microgrid with one converter, and surely the former strategy entails more volume and price. Using the proposed converter in this paper, it is possible to supply a load with N number of DGs through one converter. Also, the power outputs of all DGs are controlled by a central control strategy. The proposed central control strategy is described and simulated for a typical microgrid. Experimental and simulation results validate the effectiveness of the proposed converter and the proposed strategy. This paper presents a different Finite Control Set – Model Predictive Control (FCS-MPC) for grid-connected three-phase bidirectional power inverters. These are typically used in dc or ac renewable-based microgrids (MGs), where bidirectional operation and fast dynamic response is required. The bidirectional grid-connected inverters are an essential part of MG, which inject energy into the ac grid or demand energy from it. The dynamic behavior of the system is a major concern since the current can suddenly change depending on the hierarchical controller. This paper proposes a different cost function using sliding mode theory, which offers a good dynamic response, reduced computational burden, and a parameter-free control model. The operation principle of the proposed controller is given and evaluated using a Hardware-In-the-Loop (HIL) system, but also experimentally with a 1kW laboratory prototype. The final results demonstrate the advantages of using this approach in grid-connected three-phase bidirectional power inverters in terms of dynamic response and reduced computational burden, making this solution technically attractive and viable. Conventional model predictive control (MPC) for three-level active neutral point clamped converter (ANPC) utilizes weighting factors to achieve the optimal control of multiple control objectives in a single cost function. However, the selection of these weighting factors has an impact on the performance of the controlled objectives significantly. Tuning of weighting factors is usually tedious and lacks theoretical background. Moreover, the predictive and evaluation process for multiple objectives optimization have to be carried out by enumerating all admissible switching states within one loop. To simplify the complexity of this process and eliminate the effect of weighting factors, this paper proposes a cascaded predictive control scheme for a 3L-ANPC inverter fed induction machine (IM) drive. With the proposed approach, three separate cost functions for three control objectives, stator flux vector, neutral point voltage and device loss distribution are evaluated in a cascaded way, so that the optimization of these control objectives is performed independently. A 3L-ANPC inverter driven IM drive is studied in this paper to verify the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm. Experimental results in different operating conditions confirm that the proposed method achieves satisfactory steady-state and transient performances comparable to the conventional predictive control approach. The weighting factors used in the conventional method are eliminated and the computational effort is reduced by 68% compared to the conventional method without any sacrifice in the drive performance. Most microgrid protection schemes found in published literature suffer from a lack of generality in that they work well for the assumed topology, including type and placement of sources. Other generic protection schemes tend to be too complicated, too expensive, or both. To overcome these drawbacks, a topology-agnostic, scalable, and cost-aware protection based on fundamental principles that work in the presence of high penetration of inverter-based resources (IBRs) is developed and tested in this paper. The protection system also implements stable automatic reconfiguration of the healthy sections of the system after clearance of fault, thus increasing resilience by self-healing. To achieve this ambitious goal, stable inverter models are developed that operate in unbalanced networks in grid-connected and islanded modes, even with 100% IBRs, share power without conflicting controls, and can ride through faults while limiting fault currents. The scheme is tested for primary and backup protection and reconfiguration on the IEEE 123-node feeder in grid-connected and islanded modes with 15 IBRs connected to the system. This paper proposes a new passive Islanding detection approach for the Inverter Interfaced Distributed Generators (IIDGs) operating under different control modes. First, a novel index is formulated using Root Mean Square (RMS) value of the voltage and the frequency information, acquired at the Point of Common Coupling (PCC) of the target DG. The index is then post-processed by estimating the number of peaks and valleys $(N_{p_{k}-v})$ in a cycle using the sliding window concept, which indicates the occurrence of an event. Finally, the nature of the event, i.e., Islanding or non-Islanding, is decided by exploiting the two statistical features viz., Square of RMS $(S_{RMS})$ of $N_{p_{k}-v}$ and Average Crest Factor $(ACF^{m})$ of the proposed index. The performance of the proposed method (P-IDM) is demonstrated through comprehensive studies in PSCAD/EMTDC for the single-bus and IEEE 34-bus Active Distribution System (ADS). Also, the real-time validation is performed for the IEEE 34-bus using Controller Hardware-in-the-Loop (CHIL) setup comprising of Real-Time Digital Simulator (RTDS) and dSPACE1104. The simulation and hardware results for different test systems indicate that the proposed scheme, being generic in nature, sustains its efficacy under various interface controls of IIDGs. Finally, a comparative assessment with the other existing Signal Processing (SP) based passive methodologies shows the supremacy of the proposed method in terms of accuracy and faster detection. This paper presents a combined control scheme that consists of two complementary control strategies, namely hierarchical control and autonomous control to handle contingencies in a multi-terminal high voltage direct current (MTDC) system. The proposed hierarchical control considers three optimal targets, i.e., equal or proportional power sharing, minimizations of transmission loss and total DC voltage variation. The primary control layer implements the droop control for voltage source converters (VSCs). While in the secondary control layer, voltage reference setpoints of the VSCs in droop control scheme are calculated by the proposed optimal power flow method with the equal or proportional power sharing as equality constraints. As the hierarchical control relies on communication system, the autonomous control for power sharing can be activated during communication system malfunctioning or rapid power variation caused by renewable energy sources. The combined control strategy can greatly increase the reliability of the MTDC system. This paper presents a dual-hysteresis band control method for multi-drive systems based on a nine-switch inverter. The drive system contains two independent three-phase induction motors fed by a nine-switch inverter. Independent control of torque, speed, and stator current of two load stages is achieved. The proposed strategy offers a reliable control operation of both induction machines under individual load profiles. Instead of using independent sets of three-phase voltage source converters, the nine-switch inverter is used to drive separate machines. Thus, the volume and size of the power stage are noticeably reduced due to the use of fewer semiconductors. The theoretical concept and design steps of the proposed method are presented. The performance of the closed-loop independent motor control scheme is experimentally validated using a 3.2 kW lab-scaled nine-switch inverter prototype and Altera Cyclone IV Field-programmable gate array. The synchronization requirement is a bottleneck of many distributed optimization algorithms, particularly for solving problems with computationally heterogeneous subproblems and during the occurrence of communication failure/delay. This paper presents a double-loop learning-aided asynchronous alternating direction method of multipliers (LA-ADMM) that has information prediction capability and handles a considerable level of asynchrony between subproblems. A momentum-extrapolation prediction-correction technique is developed to enable subproblems to predict their neighbors missing shared variable information instead of using the latest received values. An online streaming-based anomaly classification is designed to observe the performance of predicted data and control Lagrange multipliers update over the course of iterations. The proposed LA-ADMM reduces under-utilization of computation resources, especially if subproblems are computationally heterogeneous. This algorithm also enhances distributed optimization robustness against communication failure/delay that may result in a considerable level of asynchrony between subproblems. LA-ADMM is applied to solve the optimal power flow problem for several test systems. The aim of this article is to develop a new cooperative path following control scheme for a team of autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) which track one curve with nonlinear uncertainties. Individual path-following controllers are designed to guarantee that each AUV meets the desired tracking performance. For the cooperative path following, a containment control approach is incorporated into the design, where each AUV is forced to evenly disperse on a path that is parameterized by a continuous variable over a communication network. The main features of the paper that unlike the existing designs are that: first, by employing the command filtered control technique, the assumption of second-order derivative of the reference path is removed. Second, a globally uniformly ultimately bounded (GUUB) path following control structure is proposed that enables two kinds of controllers to switch under different cases. Third, coordination between multiple AUVs is achieved through a containment design, and a path variable containment cooperative path following controller is derived that enables multiple AUVs to be evenly dispersed and guided by the virtual leaders. On March 31, 2019, a 500 kV air-core, shunt reactor at a large generating station in BC Hydro was damaged shortly after four unit transformers were simultaneously energized from a 500 kV series and shunt compensated line source. Forensic investigations revealed that the controlled switching system, controlling the instant at which each breaker phase closes during energization to minimize inrush current, had failed. Uncontrolled closing led to under-damped, high-magnitude and sub-synchronous currents. Protection tripped and isolated the four transformers, followed shortly by shunt reactor protection tripping. Before the reactor could be isolated by circuit breakers, a damaging internal fault developed. This paper proposes a multifunctional control strategy and associated control algorithms for distributed wind-turbine (WT) based nano-grids connected to a distorted utility-grid. The contribution is on a new strategy with innovative control algorithms to coordinate multiple converters for a multitasking operation of the nano-grids. The novelty is on a unique control design with feasibilities: maximizing the generated power from WT, maintaining power quality in both ac- and dc-sides under critical conditions of the power grid, and improving power quality against distortion from local nonlinear loads under a reduced switching frequency. A robust fast-dynamic predictive control method is developed for current controllers to fulfil the multifunction. Unconstrained deadbeat control inputs are derived in twofold targets: ensuring fast dynamic response and significantly reducing both the computation and switching frequency for finite predictive control. The control system is applied on a permanent-magnet synchronous generator (PMSG) WT-based nano-grid connected to a distorted utility-grid. An OPAL-RT-based real-time platform is used for comparative studies among the proportional integration (PI) control, finite predictive control (FS-MPC), and proposed control method. The performance verification exhibits the power quality improvement in both the nano- and utility-grids under critical conditions via high-performed regulation of currents, voltages, reactive power, and rotor-speed of the PMSG-WT. Line-switching operations introduce several concerns to microgrid operators since they trigger reliability and power quality issues in addition to increasing the wear and tear cost of switching devices. This paper proposes a novel methodology for achieving seamless line-switching in low-inertia islanded microgrids. The proposed methodology aims at mitigating the detrimental line-switching impacts by minimizing the power flow in the switched lines at the moments of executing the switching operations. The minimization of the power flow is realized by optimizing the droop control parameters of the DGs during the transition from one network topology to another. Besides, during executing a series of line-switching operations, the sequence of switching is also optimized to minimize the total switched power. While optimizing the line-switching execution sequence, the transitional droops are optimized for each line-switching operation within that sequence. A dynamic mixed-integer nonlinear programming problem is formulated to find both the optimized dynamic transitional droops and line-switching sequence simultaneously. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed seamless line-switching methodology where the switched power can be reduced by more than 80% for a single line-switching operation and 54% considering a series of four switch exchanges in addition to achieving several instances of zero-current switching. Although the logically-centralized perspective is offered in Software-Defined Networking (SDN), the data plane is still distributed. Update commands sent by the centralized controller are executed asynchronously and independently in each switch. The timed SDN enables synchronous and coordinated update operations as each update command can be triggered by a pre-defined timestamp. Prior work on timed update mainly focuses on producing a congestion-free update sequence, whereas finding a congestion-free timed update sequence may prolong the update time. Even worse, such an update order may not exist. In this paper, we propose Chronus+, a novel timed update system that utilizes the switch buffer to shorten the update time while minimizing the switch buffer during updates. First, we formulate the Minimum Switch Buffer Problem (MSBP) as an integer linear programming and show its hardness. Then, we propose a set of efficient algorithms to solve the problem in polynomial time. Extensive evaluations in Mininet and large-scale simulations show that Chronus+ can reduce the update time by at least 17% and the switch buffer size by at least 27% compared with state-of-the-art approaches. The implementation of finite-control-set model predictive control (FCS-MPC) in voltage source inverters (VSIs) can make the system suffer from poor current harmonics performance, which may complicate the design of the required AC filter. To overcome this shortcoming, a carrier-based modulated model predictive control (CB-MMPC) strategy is proposed in this paper. This method enables the utilization of existing PWM modulation techniques with FCS-MPC, where a modulation waveform with zero-sequence signal injection is generated and compared to a triangular carrier wave, while optimizing the selection of the switching states. As it is shown, the studied CB-MMPC strategy not only considerably improves the current total harmonic distortion (THD) but also attains the performance of fast current dynamic response and robustness as the traditional FCS-MPC. Herein, the detailed implementation of the CB-MMPC control strategy is given, while considering its application to the current feedback control loop of a three-phase three-wire two-level VSI modulated at constant switching frequency. Finally, PLECS circuit simulation and a 3-kW VSI prototype are used to verify the superiority and the effectiveness of the presented CB-MMPC strategy.
