The extra-LC auxiliary-resonant-snubber-based converter (ELCARSC), as a soft-switching converter, has the advantages of low switching loss, low electromagnetic interference noise, and low-output distortion caused by the dead-time effect. However, the dead-time effect is still the main problem in a high-precision application. Besides, the traditional control and compensation methods rely on the accuracy of the circuit parameters, especially the junction capacitance, thus resulting in compensation error. Therefore, this paper proposed a novel high-precision control method through modulating the initial resonant current to eliminate the dead-time effect of ELCARSC. The method does not need complicated online calculation and reduces the dependence on the accuracy of the circuit parameters, especially the influence of the junction capacitances of the switches. In this paper, the dead-time effect of the ELCARSC is analyzed. The output voltage error with the conventional variable-timing control method is analyzed. Subsequently, the proposed modulated initial resonant current control is introduced. Finally, a prototype was developed that verified the effectiveness of the control method. This paper presents the digital implementation of a boundary controller with unipolar switching characteristic for single-phase voltage source full-bridge inverters. This paper expands the application of a second-order switching surface-based control method to unipolar switching of single-phase voltage source inverters (VSIs) using a finite-state machine. The finite-state machine has been formulated considering four different states of the inverter; positive,zero1, negative, andzero2. The second-order boundary control governs the current state of the system and provides proper switching action to keep the system within the desired reference. The control law is implemented digitally in F28m35x digital control card. A full-bridge inverter topology is used to achieve the three-level voltage switching. Various simulations and experiments were performed in a 550 VA, 120 V, 60 Hz VSI with a digitally implemented controller to verify the theoretical predictions. A high-quality voltage output was obtained for various loading conditions. The transient performance of the controller was investigated using a reference and load changes. In this paper, two structures are proposed for the switched-inductor quasi-Z-source inverter. In the proposed structures to extend the voltage gain of inverter, two new switched-inductor structures are used. In the proposed structures, voltage across the capacitors in the Z-source network and in the switched-inductor is symmetric and small. The other advantage of proposed inverters is known as achieving higher voltage gain per smaller duty cycle ratio (of shoot-through). Compared with a conventional continuous input current switched-inductor quasi-Z-source inverter at the same gain voltage, there is less of a ripple of input current in the proposed inverters. In this paper, at first the both the conventional and the proposed switched-inductor Z-source inventers are thoroughly investigated to find out their governing relations. Then, the proposed Z-source inverters are compared with the conventional ones by simulating them to assess their performance efficiency. Next, applying the simple boost pulse width modulation the simulation is carried out with PSCAD/EMTDC software. In this paper, new half-bridge and full-bridge topologies for a switched-boost inverter are proposed. These topologies have a high boost factor in comparison with conventional types. In addition, the proposed topologies have continuous input current and can generate zero-voltage level in output. In this paper, the operation of the proposed inverters in different operating modes is analyzed. Then, the values of inductors and capacitors are designed. Moreover, the used switching pattern and its logical diagram are introduced. A comprehensive comparison between the proposed and conventional topologies in terms of the boost factor, the number of elements, and the efficiency shows the good features of the proposed inverters. To reduce the common-mode voltage (CMV) and eliminate the CMV spikes for two-level voltage source inverters (2L-VSIs), an improved model predictive control (MPC) based CMV reduction method is proposed in this paper considering dead-time effects. First, an improved voltage vector (VV) preselection strategy is proposed to reduce the CMV spikes caused by the dead time. Second, a new hybrid VV preselection strategy based on a delay compensation strategy and a modified current sector division strategy is proposed to completely eliminate the CMV spikes. As the proposed hybrid VV preselection based MPC strategy makes full use of the six nonzero VVs of the 2L-VSI, the current total harmonic distortions and ripples are reduced. In voltage-source inverters (VSIs), dead time is used to prevent shoot-through over switching devices. However, the existence of the dead time will distort the output phase current, which degrades the performance of the inverter as well as influences the common-mode voltage (CMV), particularly in CMV elimination relevant modulation schemes, such as zero-common-mode (CM) pulsewidth modulation (PWM)-based paralleled inverters. In the light of the situation that the normal sampling-based dead-time compensation (DTC) methods are often disturbed by the current ripple, this paper introduces a novel DTC method for the VSI, which can mitigate the impact of the current ripple and improve the accuracy of DTC. The proposed method deduces the real-time current ripple, which can reconstruct the actual trajectory of phase-leg currents, and the peak values corresponding to rising and falling edges for PWM signals can be predicted. In this way, DTC can be implemented based on the direction of relevant instantaneous switching currents and finally improves the accuracy. Especially, the current-ripple-prediction-based DTC can help to improve the CMV distortion caused by the dead time for paralleled inverters with zero-CM PWM. Although high-frequency circulating current exists in parallel-operated inverters, it has not attracted as much attention as low-frequency circulating current, and thus has not been analyzed in detail previously. In this paper, a mathematical model and analysis are presented, which reveal the spectrum components and their changing trends of the circulating currents caused by carrier phase differences. The impact of carrier phase difference on high-frequency circulating current is also analyzed and verified. A closed-loop control scheme is proposed to suppress the switching frequency circulating current caused by carrier phase difference. In addition, the deadbeat and closed-loop control are combined to suppress the low- and high-frequency circulating currents simultaneously, to improve the overall performance of circulating current suppression. This paper presents a nine-level transformer-based inverter requiring only eight switches. The envisaged structure consists of two standard H-bridges fed from a single dc source. Besides, a single-phase transformer is employed to aid the process of intermediate voltage level generation. An ad-hoc pulsewidth modulation scheme based on boolean logic form equations is developed to derive the gating pulses. An effortless extension of the proposed inverter to a higher number of voltage levels is also achieved by generalizing the switching functions. Furthermore, the superior performance of the proposed topology is demonstrated through a comprehensive cost-based analysis. Based on the Z-source inverter, this paper proposed a novel approach to zero-crossing point (ZCP) detections during the shoot-through vectors for sensorless brushless dc motor (BLDCM). The proposed approach separates the ZCP detections from speed adjustment, and makes the shoot-through vector not influence the motor speed-adjustment directly, while the zero-vectors and active-vectors are used exclusively to adjust the speed of BLDCM. With the proposed approach, the sensorless BLDCM can operate in a wide speed range without switching the detection points and the reference levels, and it is unnecessary to change the reference levels according to the PWM technique. The terminal voltages limited by diode can be directly compared with the reference zero level during the shoot-through vectors, so as to reduce the detection error caused by attenuation. Moreover, Z-source inverter not only provides boost voltage for sensorless BLDCM drive system, but also improves the utilization rate of dc source voltage and the safety of the drive system. In addition, this paper analyzed the terminal voltages of the floating phase during each vector. A new pulse width modulation (PWM) strategy which is an alternative approach of the discontinuous PWM (DPWM) for a three-level neutral-point-clamped (NPC) inverter is developed and presented in this paper. The proposed PWM scheme not only takes advantage of the special properties available in NPC inverters, but also reduces the switching loss of the inverter along with an inherent neutral point (NP) voltage control. Based on a circuit-level decoupling concept, the NPC inverter can be decoupled into two three-level Buck converters in every defined operating section, and thereby the controller design can be simplified. The salient features of the proposed scheme, as compared with the existing carrier-based DPWM strategies, are: 1) its reduced computational processing time, 2) its capability to balance the dc-link voltage without any additional control, and 3) its reduced complexity, e.g., only one carrier wave needed for pulse width modulating. Same as a space-vector modulation, the maximum modulation index, 1.1547, can be attainable by the proposed scheme. Moreover, compared to conventional continuous sinusoidal PWM, using this technique proposed here, the switching losses of the devices can be reduced by one third. In order to explain the operation of this topology properly, the decoupling principle including the driving signal synthesis and the NP potential variation are analyzed in detail in this paper. Multilevel inverters are receiving more attentions nowadays as one of preferred solutions for medium- and high-power applications. As one of the most popular hybrid multilevel inverter topologies, the five-level active-neutral-point-clamped inverter (5L-ANPC) combines the features of the conventional flying-capacitor type and neutral-point-clamped (NPC) type inverter and was commercially used for industrial applications. In order to further decrease the number of active switches, this paper proposes a seven-switch 5L-ANPC (7S-5L-ANPC) topology, which employs only seven active switches and two discrete diodes. The analysis has shown a lower current rating can be selected for the seventh switch under high power factor condition, which is verified by simulation results. The modulation strategy for 7S-5L-ANPC inverter is discussed. In order to meet the high performance and efficiency requirements, a new space vector-based discontinuous modulation strategy for neutral-point clamped three-level inverter is presented in this paper. Different from the conventional discontinuous PWM (DPWM) strategies, a new clamping state is applied to synthesize the reference voltage under the condition of low modulation index. The rms value of output current ripple for different clamping states are calculated, and then the distribution of the new clamping state and the other two clamping states adopted in conventional DPWMs is optimized based on the calculation results. The switching sequences are redesigned according to the new distribution of the three clamping states. The output voltage and current, switching loss, neutral-point voltage ripple and the common mode voltage of the proposed DPWM strategy and DPWM0–DPWM3 are compared by simulation and experimental results. The results show that by the use of the proposed strategy, the values of total demand distortion of output current (ITDD) and weighted total harmonic distortion of output voltage (\boldsymbolV{\mathbf{WTHD}}) are the lowest. Furthermore, the product of switching loss and ITDD of the proposed strategy maintains the lowest within a large range of modulation index-load angle plane. It can be concluded that the utilization of the new clamping state and optimal distribution of different clamping states could enhance the output performance of the inverter. Permanent magnet synchronous motor and power electronics-based three-phase inverter are the major components in the modern industrial electric drive system, such as electrical actuators in an all-electric subsea Christmas tree. Inverters are the weakest components in the drive system, and power switches are the most vulnerable components in inverters. Fault detection and diagnosis of inverters are extremely necessary for improving drive system reliability. Motivated by solving the uncertainty problem in fault diagnosis of inverters, which is caused by various reasons, such as bias and noise of sensors, this paper proposes a Bayesian network-based data-driven fault diagnosis methodology of three-phase inverters. Two output line-to-line voltages for different fault modes are measured, the signal features are extracted using fast Fourier transform, the dimensions of samples are reduced using principal component analysis, and the faults are detected and diagnosed using Bayesian networks. This paper presents a new single-phase switched-coupled-inductor dc–ac inverter featuring higher voltage gain than the existing single-phase qZ-source and semi-Z-source inverters. Similar to the single-phase qZ-source and semi-Z-source inverters, the proposed inverter also has common grounds between the dc input and ac output voltages, which is beneficial especially for photovoltaic inverter systems. The inverter volume and maximum current flowing can be reduced significantly through the coupling of all inductors. This paper proposes a single-phase, single-stage buck–boost inverter for photovoltaic (PV) systems. The presented topology has one common terminal in input and output ports which eliminates common mode leakage current problem in the grid-connected PV applications. Although it uses four switches, its operation is bimodal and only two switches receive high-frequency pulse width modulation signals in each mode. Its principle of operation is described in detail with the help of equivalent circuits. Its dynamic model is presented, based on which a bimodal controller is designed. This paper presents a concise frequency-domain interharmonic model for the current-source inverter-fed (CSI-fed) variable frequency drives (VFDs). This model is in the form of a Thévenin equivalent circuit. The equivalent voltage source is determined only by the VFD operating point, while the equivalent impedance is influenced by the system impedance, the dc-link impedance, and motor parameters. This model, verified by simulations and measurements, can be used to predict the interharmonic propagation in a system supplying CSI-fed VFDs. The model also reveals the interharmonic generation characteristics of the VFDs, which will help the proper selection of mitigation options. This paper proposes a unique carrier-based pulse width modulation strategy for a three-level neutral-point-clamped inverter that works satisfactorily and with uniform convergence time over the full power factor (PF) range of the load variation. It has excellent control over capacitor voltages and mitigates low-frequency oscillations in the neutral point for the full PF range. First, an investigation is made to see how the load currents get modulated to generate compensating neutral current causing charging and discharging of dc-link capacitors. It is observed that when an additional modulating voltage signal that is in phase with the corresponding phase current is added in each phase, a neutral current is produced in the right direction which can be used to compensate for any prior unbalance in capacitor voltages. It is demonstrated that the performance of this scheme is insensitive to the load PF variation (full range from zero to unity). It performs satisfactorily throughout the entire linear modulation range and eliminates any undesirable low-frequency harmonic component in the compensating neutral current. The effectiveness of the proposed scheme is verified through simulation and experimental results by varying load PF as well as modulation index with both passive and motor loads. In this paper, a novel topology of six-level inverters for a medium-voltage high-power applications is proposed, which consists of inner flying-capacitor inverter (FCI) units and outer two-level inverter units. The proposed topology can reduce the number of devices, components, and isolated sources compared with the existing ones in the case of the same number of output voltage steps, which result in a reduction of the size and weight of the inverters. Also, the total power loss of the proposed topology is lower than that of the diode-clamped inverter (DCI) and FCI. Besides, the estimated cost of the proposed topology is about 60.5% and 81.3% compared with the DCI and FCI, respectively. In addition, the modulation technique and the control strategy for the dc-link capacitor and flying-capacitor voltages are developed for the proposed topology. A new single-phase \uppi-\texttype 5-level inverter using 3-terminal switch-network (3TSN) is proposed in this paper. The topology is considered as a variant of T-type 3-level structure or dual-buck inverter with coupled inductors. This new inverter is suitable for multilevel power inversion with low dc-bus voltage. The merit of the proposed topology is to apply only four active power switches to achieve 5-level operation. Other benefits include double frequency operation of output inductor and equal division of the current that flows through power switches and filter inductor. Hence, it leads to high efficiency and low harmonics. These characteristics allow improvement of losses distribution and volume reduction of output filter inductor. Flux harmonic distortion factors (HDFs) of two space vector pulse width modulation (SVPWM) schemes, aimed at sinusoidal output voltage generation with five-phase voltage source inverters, have been evaluated in Part 1 of this paper. Analytical considerations and numerical integration have been applied in order to determine the switching properties of the considered SVPWM methods. It has been shown that the SVPWM based on four large vectors leads to a considerably higher overall per-phase flux HDF than the method based on two large and two medium space vectors. The purpose of the second part of the paper is to relate flux HDFs to the current ripple and current total harmonic distortion and thus explore further switching characteristics of the two SVPWM techniques. The applied approach is based on simulation and experimentation, in conjunction with the subsequent fast Fourier transform of the waveforms, so that all the results for the ripple are obtained using a methodology completely different from the one in Part 1. Relationships that correlate the current ripple and the flux HDFs are established, and it is further shown that the current ripple can be easily calculated from the flux HDF values of Part 1 if the relevant leakage inductances of the two planes are known. Hence, the complete theory of Part 1 is fully verified by both simulation and experimentation. Conventional hysteresis current controllers have the disadvantage of a variable switching frequency. This paper presents a novel hysteresis current control method which uses the adjacent current error zero-crossing time to calculate the upper/lower hysteresis bandwidth after the measured half current error period. This strategy makes the algorithm independent of load parameters and thus it can achieve a stable switching frequency. An improved switching scheme has been successfully applied to a single-phase three-level H-bridge voltage source inverter driving a vibration test bench based on the novel hysteresis current. It can select appropriate switching states to overcome dead-time effects without dead-time compensation according to the relation of the current switching state, the current error, and the upper/lower hysteresis bandwidth. Field-programmable gate array has enough computational power to allow multiple sampling within a current error period and logic control power to implement state machine transitions. This paper proposes an indirect current control algorithm for seamless transfer of three-phase utility-interactive voltage source inverters. With the proposed method the inverter is able to provide critical loads with a stable and seamless voltage during the whole transition period including both clearing time and control mode change. With regard to a five-level inverter comprising flying-capacitor asymmetric H-bridge, the impact on the capacitor voltage under conventional modulation approach is analyzed. Since it is sensitive to the fundamental period and the load current, it may introduce undesired low-order harmonics into the output voltage and may even break down the power switches due to the considerable fluctuation of the flying-capacitor voltage. Thus, this paper proposes a novel pulsewidth-modulation scheme with the positive and negative cross carriers, which controls the flying-capacitor voltage by utilizing the redundant switching states of the output voltages. Three modes of precharging the flying capacitor without extra equipments are presented. Moreover, the capacitance of the flying capacitor and the switching frequency of the power switches can be chosen according to the allowable fluctuation of the flying-capacitor voltage and the load current. In order to remove the overlapping of the level layers, the optimization of the line-to-line voltage waveform is proposed to synthesize the reference vector with the “nearest three-vector” approach. Predictive control techniques have recently been applied with success to conventional and multiphase electrical drives. The additional degrees of freedom in multiphase drives make the real-time implementation of optimal solutions difficult due to the increased number of iterations. This paper proposes a predictive control technique that reduces the available voltage source inverter switching states according to predefined constraints. The introduced method, called as restrained search predictive control, favors on-line implementation and improves the current tracking performance. When small currents are interrupted by a vacuum switch, it is well known that the chopping current and the associated overvoltage are observed. Many investigations on the current-chopping phenomena in alternating-current (ac) circuits have been carried out, but there are no data available on inverter circuits in spite of their recent wide application to synchronous motor systems. In this paper, chopping-current levels and the overvoltages in an inverter circuit under a simple three-level pulsewidth-modulated control are investigated. As a result, the mean chopping-current level is three to four times higher than that in an ac circuit. In particular, high chopping currents occur only when the timing of the current interruption by the vacuum switch synchronizes with that of the inverter's switching, which we call “double chopping.” High chopping current due to double chopping might be harmful since the high overvoltage proportional to the chopping-current level could damage the insulation of electric equipment. There is a strong trend in the photovoltaic inverter technology to use transformerless topologies in order to acquire higher efficiencies combining with very low ground leakage current. In this paper, a new topology, based on the H-bridge with a new ac bypass circuit consisting of a diode rectifier and a switch with clamping to the dc midpoint, is proposed.
