The paper presents new diagnostic method applied to assess aging degree for paper-oil insulation used in professional electrical power device, primarily including medium and high power transformers. The described method is based on modified diagnostics using the recovery voltage effect occurring in dielectrics (RVM ? Recovery Voltage Methods). Modification of the RVM method applied so far, which is now used only to assess moistening degree for paper-oil insulation in power transformers, consists in a new parametric analysis of recovery voltage time characteristics. Simulation and experimental tests carried out in laboratory conditions for adequately prepared insulation samples have proven that the time-constant of recovery voltage decay (?R_MIN) is the most susceptible parameter as regards quantitative change in the function of aging of the examined insulation. This conclusion is also confirmed by statistical studies, in which a multi-parameter variance analysis method has been applied. An original equivalent circuit diagram of the insulation has been used to simulate aging degree of paper-oil insulation samples in numerical tests. This paper proposes a time-domain method of characteristics to simulate the impulse corona with background space charge, and derives the ordinary differential equations of the space charge generated by the impulse corona along the electric field line. The corresponding boundary conditions, the selection of time step and space step, and the update strategy of space charge are given. The calculation result of the impulse corona onset voltage is consistent with the test result, proving that the background space charge has almost no effect on the impulse corona onset electric field which is obtained by Kaptzov's assumption. The q-u curve obtained by simulation is compared with the test results to verify the effectiveness of the simulation method. The simulation method is used to obtain the development process of space charge during the application of the opposite polarity impulse voltage. By analyzing the space charge distribution during the process of impulse corona, and the corresponding microscopic charge distribution and macroscopic charge amount at different corona states, the characteristics of impulse corona are explained. This paper deals with the high accurate current set-points solution for interior permanent-magnet synchronous motors (IPMSM) in wide-speed range applications. Considering voltage and current constraints, the operating regions can be divided into maximum torque per ampere, maximum current, field weakening, and maximum torque per voltage regions, which requires solving different nonlinear functions in real time to obtain optimal current set-points. Traditional methods including curve-fitting methods and polynomial approximation (PA) methods are not easy to obtain these solutions, especially involving magnetic saturation problems. In this paper, Newton–Raphson algorithm for improving the control accuracy of the current set-points is proposed. Meanwhile, parameters influence including magnetic saturation and resistive voltage drop is fully investigated. Compared with PA method, the proposed method is able to converge to accurate solutions in few numbers of iterations with reduced execution time, which can be easily implemented on an off-the-shelf digital signal processor. An increasing need for fast and reliable models has led to a continuous development of Fourier-based (FB) analytical modeling. This paper presents an overview of the techniques that are currently available in FB modeling for electric machines. By coupling that overview to the most relevant literature related to the subject, an interesting starting point is provided for anyone who wants to use or improve FB models. The following seven aspects of FB models are discussed in detail: 1) the magnetic potential (scalar or vector potential); 2) the coordinate system and the solution of the partial-differential equations for each magnetic potential and for each coordinate system; 3) the way in which time dependence is accounted for; 4) the implementation of the source terms; 5) the possibilities to account for slotted structures; 6) the modeling of eccentricity; and 7) the post-processing computation of physical quantities, such as flux density, electromotive force, torque, losses, and eddy currents in conductive objects. Furthermore, this paper gives the closed form solution of the Laplace, Poisson, and Helmholtz equations in each coordinate system. The capacitance of sub-module capacitor has a great impact on the cost, size, and operation of the modular multi-level converter (MMC). However, the capacitance selected by the existing methods does not always meet the requirement in practice. To find out the reasons for this improper selection, the existing selection methods are analyzed in this paper. Based on the analysis, a new capacitance-selection method is proposed. In the new method, the problems of the existing methods are solved, and the calculation of capacitor voltage is based on a proposed capacitor-voltage model whose calculation error can be smaller than 0.1%. Furthermore, the Secant Method is used in the capacitance selection to quickly calculate the required capacitance. The new capacitance-selection method can be applicable to the MMC not having a circular operating region. In addition, this paper found that the capacitor voltage and the capacitor-voltage ripple reach their maximum values when the power-factor angles of the MMC are –π/2 and π/2, respectively, and the dc component in the capacitor voltage changes according to the operating condition of the MMC. Contribution: This brief comment highlights some crucial assumptions behind the “law of the junction” that are overlooked by the above paper and argues that the proposed derivation is not actually a “new” derivation at all. Background: The “law of the junction” is one of the most significant and useful results within the field of solid-state devices. The above paper is likely to confuse readers, particularly those who are undergraduate electrical engineering students studying semiconductor device physics for the first time. This is especially so because of the abstract nature of the underlying quantum mechanics framework and solid-state physics models (subjects which the typical student at that level lacks a substantial background in) as well as the plethora of tedious equations in the curriculum. Research Questions: What core physical concepts are essential to a fundamental yet intuitive understanding of the law of the junction? Methodology: Several key features of how semiconductor junctions behave under bias are explained. References to well-known textbooks are provided where appropriate. Findings: The above paper’s primary mistake is its assertion that its derivation does not rely on the assumption of thermal equilibrium. However, the law of the junction is equivalent to a calculation of depletion-edge minority carrier concentrations using Maxwell–Boltzmann statistics—a distribution which only holds under thermal equilibrium conditions. More rigorously, in a nondegenerate semiconductor, Fermi–Dirac statistics (which governs electrons) reduces to Boltzmann statistics only when the electrochemical potential is spatially uniform, a condition equivalent to having no net flow of thermal energy—the very definition of thermal equilibrium. An electric potential appears at floating wires located within a strong electric field. This phenomenon can be used to supply small isolated communities situated close to Extra-High Voltage transmission lines. This non-conventional distributed generation system has been studied for the last years. However, to improve the power generation system the optimal position of the floating wires, number of wires used, bundle radius, and type of wires must be properly identified. This paper presents a mathematical model solved with genetic algorithm to design a collector system with optimized induced voltage and minimized project cost, identifying the optimal reactor used for voltage regulation. The algorithm was applied to design a collector system that can tap-off 100 kW from a 230 kV transmission line. The trade-off between objectives and the Pareto optimal solutions were evidenced via several simulations using the weighting sum approach. Objective: This paper develops a novel approach for fast and reliable reconstruction of EEG sources in MRI-based head models. Methods: The inverse EEG problem is reduced to the Cauchy problem for an elliptic partial-derivative equation. The problem is transformed into a regularized minimax problem, which is directly approximated in a finite-element space. The resulting numerical method is efficient and easy to program. It eliminates the need to solve forward problems, which can be a tedious task. The method applies to complex anatomical head models, possibly containing holes in surfaces, anisotropic conductivity, and conductivity variations inside each tissue. The method has been verified on a spherical shell model and an MRI-based head. Results: Numerical experiments indicate high accuracy of localization of brain activations (both cortical potential and current) and rapid execution time. Conclusion: This study demonstrates that the proposed approach is feasible for EEG source analysis and can serve as a rapid and reliable tool for EEG source analysis. Significance: The significance of this study is that it develops a fast, accurate, and simple numerical method of EEG source analysis, applicable to almost arbitrary complex head models. The dielectric screening property of a semiconductor is very crucial for the electrical characteristics of a MOSFET, and which can be described mathematically by Poisson equation via the permittivity. While the theory and experiments have corroborated the permittivity reduction of nanoscale Si, this paper studies the electrical characteristics of MOSFETs considering the reduced channel permittivity by quantum transport simulations. It is found that the channel permittivity reduction may mitigate the short-channel effects, showing subthreshold swing improvement and threshold voltage shift of MOSFETs in nanoscale. Compared to quantization effects, the positive and negative impacts of the channel permittivity reduction on the devices in particularly nanoscale have been investigated. Switched reluctance machines (SRMs) are witnessing increased interests and applications in the industry and scientific communities thanks to the advantages of rigid structures, high reliability and robustness, the absence of permanent magnets, fast dynamic response, and low manufacturing cost. SRMs have become a feasible and popular alternative to conventional electric machines, such as induction machines and permanent magnet machines, with variable speed drives in many applications. Since improving the electromagnetic and thermal performances of an SRM at the design stage is of significant value, this paper presents an in-depth literature review on the status and potential trends of the technology pertinent to the design and optimization of SRMs in the following aspects: the mathematical modeling of the electromagnetic and thermal fields in SRMs, the enhancement of the performances in terms of the torque ripple, acoustic noise, efficiency, and torque density, and the multiobjective design optimization incorporating all the above factors. Finally, the presence of SRMs and their design considerations for specific applications in electric vehicles, aircraft and aerospace systems, wind generators, high speed, and energy storage systems are extensively discussed in this paper. Objective: Unipolar pulses have been used in cell electrofusion over the last decades. However, the problem of high mortality with unipolar pulses has not been solved effectively. The cell fusion rate is restricted by cell mortality. By using the advantages of bipolar pulses which cause less cell damage, this paper attempts to use bipolar pulses to increase the cell fusion rate. Methods: the transmembrane voltage and pore density of cells subjected to unipolar/bipolar pulses were simulated in COMSOL software. In an experiment, two 40 μs unipolar and two 20–20 μs bipolar pulses with electric fields of 2, 2.5, and 3 kV/cm were applied to SP2/0 murine myeloma cells. To determine the cell fusion rate and cell mortality, cells were stained with Hoechst 33342 and propidium iodide. Results: the simulation in this paper showed that a high transmembrane voltage and a high pores density were concentrated only at the contact area of cells when bipolar pulses were used. The results of the cell staining experiment verified the simulation analysis. When bipolar pulses were applied, the cell mortality was significantly reduced. In addition, the cell fusion rate with bipolar pulses was almost two times higher than that with unipolar pulses. Conclusion: for cell electrofusion, compared with unipolar pulses, bipolar pulses can not only reduce the cell mortality remarkably but also improve the cell fusion rate obviously. The collision frequencies between electrons and air molecules are important parameters when analyzing electrical breakdown. Different values for the collision frequency in atmospheric air have been reported in academic literature; the current analysis method for breakdown in waveguides and filters considers an electric field-independent term. However, some authors have remarked the importance of an electric field dependence of the collision frequency. In this paper, the collision frequency of electrons, accelerated by the presence of an electric field, against air molecules is obtained. The collision frequency is calculated from experimental data, for breakdown voltages at dc in positive polarity in a wide atmospheric pressure range using a plane–plane plates configuration. As waveguide filters are currently designed with a 3-dB tolerance below the electrical breakdown thresholds, this paper analyses the current methods for these breakdown threshold calculations, and proposes a novel correction factor for the collision frequency in order to approximate the analytic calculations to experimental results. In this paper, a complete flux scheme (CFS) has been implemented in 1-D fluid model for simulating the pulsed dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) in pure argon at atmospheric pressure. The characteristic quantities of the pulsed DBD have been systematically calculated by using the CFS and presented in comparison with those by using the exponential difference scheme (EDS). This paper shows the following results. There is the two-pulse discharge mode in the present simulation. The two discharge currents obtained using the CFS and EDS converge to the same result in good agreement with the experiment as spatial step length decreases, but the CFS has a fast convergence performance compared to the EDS. With a small grid number, the numerical scheme has an evident effect on the characteristic quantities in the time region corresponding to the first discharge pulse. This paper suggests that in the pulsed DBD, the usage of the CFS with a properly small grid number can give more accurate result and also presents a high calculation efficiency. Load characteristics have substantial influence on the voltage stability of power systems. The self-restorative characteristic and stalling of induction motor loads can deteriorate the voltage stability, so it is necessary to develop accurate and efficient dynamic analysis methods for voltage stability analysis of systems with induction motor loads. In this paper, a set of methods based on holomorphic embedding is proposed, which is able to solve steady states and dynamics of a power system with induction motors. The paper is the first work that applies holomorphic embedding to dynamic problems of power systems. The test cases on the IEEE 14-bus system, the NPCC 140-bus system, and the Polish 2383-bus system verify both accuracy and efficiency of the proposed methods. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper is the first known composition to demonstrate the application of quintic splines in the development of a dual-gate MOSFET model based on the well-known drift-diffusion system of differential equations used in semiconductor analysis. The techniques and methodologies presented advance the current state of the art in this particular area by implementing improved 2-D numerical techniques and avoiding the use of common accuracy reducing assumptions to decrease semiconductor equation complexity and execution time. This results in a model that is valid in all regions of operation, includes Non-Quasi static transient behavior, accounts for short channel effects, and allows researchers to predict the real world manufacturing effects of gate oxide thickness imperfections and applied gate voltage disparities. Model validation was accomplished by comparing simulation results to previously published experimental data for long and short channel devices as well as data generated using an established commercial product. This paper describes a simple analysis of the guided waves in an eccentric circular waveguide based on the bipolar coordinate system (BCS). The separation of the variable technique is used for the solution. The structure under study is an infinite perfect electric conductor (PEC) cylinder in the z-direction, which encloses eccentrically another infinite PEC cylinder. The modal analysis has been conducted using an analytical method, solving the TE and TM modes by the aid of electromagnetic formulation. Despite previous studies which mostly rely on numerical techniques or otherwise considering the dominant TEM mode, in this paper, the analytical solution is proposed for the electromagnetic fields which consequently lead to the characterization of the cutoff wavenumbers of higher order modes and explicit solution to electric and magnetic fields in BCS. The solution of the Helmholtz equation in BCS using the technique of separation of variables exhibits as a one of the contributions of this paper, and the validity range of the answer is discussed. The values of the cutoff wavenumbers for the first few modes are calculated and compared with the benchmark results. The precise correspondence of the obtained values with the proposed method with those of the previous studies and computer simulations, along with the high speed and simplicity in implementation, introduces the present method as an appropriate option for analyzing eccentric circular cylindrical structures. Recent studies have proved that sustainable saturation operation of Ferrite Power Inductors (FPIs) allows reducing the inductor size and increasing the power density in Switch-Mode Power Supply (SMPS) applications. This paper discusses a new behavioral model for reliable prediction of ac power loss in FPIs, including the effects of saturation. The new model has been identified by means of the Genetic Programming (GP) algorithm combined with a Multi-Objective Optimization (MOO) technique, starting from large sets of power loss experimental measurements. The proposed ac power loss model uses as input variables the voltage and switching frequency imposed to the inductor by the SMPS operation, while the dc inductor current is used as a parameter expressing the impact of saturation. Such quantities can be easily determined for whatever converter topology and in real-world switching operation, thus confirming the readiness and the easiness-to-use of the proposed behavioral model. The results of experimental tests presented in this paper prove the reliability of the power loss predictions, also by correctly accounting for the impact of inductors saturation. Inverter delay is often evaluated as $\textit {CV}_{\text {dd}}/{I}_{\text {eff}}$ , where ${C}$ is the load capacitance, ${V}_{\text {dd}}$ is the supply voltage, and ${I}_{\text {eff}}$ is the effective drive current derived by approximating the inverter switching trajectory with a linear model. The ${I}_{\text {eff}}$ model utilizes high and low drain currents conventionally measured in wafer acceptance tests and does not require extraction of any parameters. Ease of use combined with reasonable accuracy (~15%) is the main reason for wide application of $\textit {CV}_{\text {dd}}/{I}_{\text {eff}}$ delay metrics. However, $\textit {CV}_{\text {dd}}/{I}_{\text {eff}}$ expression produces large errors when applied to another two important basic circuits: NAND and NOR. This is because NAND and NOR circuits contain transistor series connections not accounted for in the inverter model. In this paper, an analytical solution for the transistor series connection influence on the discharge/charge operation in NAND/NOR circuits is provided. The model for NAND/NOR effective drive current (denoted as ${I}_{\text {stack}}$) developed in this paper maintains simplicity of the original ${I}_{\text {eff}}$ expression. It requires only one additional measurement of the linear current. Model accuracy was assessed by comparing to extensive SPICE delay simulations of NAND and NOR circuits designed using state-of-the-art MOS technologies. Comparison results show that $\textit {CV}_{\text {dd}}/{I}_{\text {stack}}$ equation provides ~15% accuracy for NAND/NOR circuits in line with $\textit {CV}_{\text {dd}}/{I}_{\text {eff}}$ accuracy for inverter. In an era of emphasis on low-power design, the developed model presents convenient means of exploring design space when optimizing circuit supply voltage for low-power operation. The minimum specific ON-resistance $\text{R}_{ \mathrm{\scriptscriptstyle ON},\textsf {sp}}$ of the semisuperjunction (semi-SJ) device is realized in this paper. Based on the similar SJ optimization method in our previous works, the minimum $\text{R}_{ \mathrm{\scriptscriptstyle ON},\textsf {sp}}$ of the semi-SJ is searched by optimizing both the semi-SJ and the N-buffer regions. The proposed design formulas give the optimized doping concentration $\text{N}_{\textsf {SJ}}$ of the semi-SJ region, doping concentration $\text{N}_{\textsf {B}}$ , and length $\text{L}_{\textsf {B}}$ of the N-buffer region, respectively. As examples, 1000- and 1500-V semi-SJ devices are designed with the formulas. The calculated results are in a good agreement with the simulations. The comparisons between the simulations and the existing experiments demonstrate that the optimization in this paper realizes lower $\text{R}_{ \mathrm{\scriptscriptstyle ON},\textsf {sp}}$ under the same breakdown voltage $\text{V}_{\textsf {B}}$ even with a shorter SJ length. Circuit models of horizontal and vertical grounding electrodes are traditionally used in high-frequency (HF) analysis, although underlying approximations limit their accuracy in some low-frequency ranges. Recently, a number of new circuit models have been introduced, but the improvement of the accuracy at HF has not been systematically evaluated. In this paper, we show that new circuit models can be directly derived from method of moments solutions of the integral forms of Maxwell equations by introducing different assumptions. This approach helps to categorize different models into only a few categories based on underlying approximations. To determine the applicable range, we analyze the error for impedance to ground computed by different circuit models in comparison to that calculated by a rigorous full-wave model over wide ranges of parameters, such as electrode length, soil resistivity, and frequency. This paper: 1) provides a parametric analysis that enables the estimation of the applicability of the particular circuit model for application to a practical case based on its accuracy; 2) presents a unified systematic approach to derive circuit models with different capabilities; and 3) reveals that the modeling of the mutual coupling between different parts of the grounding electrode is the key factor for radically improving the accuracy of circuit models at HF. A comprehensive time series power flow (TSPF) framework is proposed for the analysis of fault-induced delayed voltage recovery (FIDVR). TSPF bridges the gap between static power flow simulations and time-domain simulations for FIDVR analysis. FIDVR events can be simulated faster with TSPF, while transient simulations normally require much longer time. In the TSPF framework, a random model for the disconnection of the induction motors is proposed to determine the load for different “snapshots” during FIDVR events. Regression analysis is used to predict the parameters needed in the simulations. There is no need to simplify the network topology or aggregate loads into clusters as in measurement-based load modeling approaches. The techniques presented in this paper successfully reproduced two FIDVR events recorded in heavily meshed distribution networks in New York City in 2010 and 2015. In dc distribution networks, the parallel H-bridge dc/dc converters (HBDCs) are widely adopted to convert voltage levels with the higher power rating and reliability, in which the parallel HBDCs are naturally connected in input-parallel output-parallel (IPOP) form. However among IPOP HBDCs, there are complicated circulating currents that will influence the safe and steady operation of dc distribution networks. This paper focuses on the suppression of these circulating currents. First, the detailed mathematic models of circulating currents among IPOP HBDCs are derived. Through the model, it is found that various types of circulating currents exist in the system, including the circulating currents within the single HBDC and the circulating currents among the multiple HBDCs. Hence, the suppression of circulating currents among IPOP HBDCs is a multiobjective control problem. In this paper, it is proven that the conventional one degree of freedom control based on the bipolar modulation cannot eliminate all the circulating currents. Second, a novel two degrees of freedom control method is proposed to suppress all kinds of circulating currents based on the improved modulation way of HBDCs, which consists of two parts. The droop based control is used to suppress the circulating currents among the multiple HBDCs, whereas the common mode control is used to control the circulating currents within the single HBDC. The modular smart transformer (ST) is composed by several basic converters rated for lower voltage and power. In this paper, the quadruple active bridge (QAB) is used as the basic block for the modular ST. In this application, the efficiency and cost are the most important design parameters. Therefore, the paper focus on the design of the converter, with the aim to optimize its efficiency, taking the cost into consideration. To do so, the losses of all components are carefully modeled and a computer-aided design is used, where an algorithm to calculate the losses and cost is developed, allowing to perform multiobjective optimization. Additionally, silicon IGBTs and silicon carbide mosfets are considered for the design and the performance of the converter using both semiconductors technology is compared. This paper presents a study of the losses in the integrated buck–flyback converter (IBFC) used as high-power-factor LED driver. The aim of the study is to investigate the possibilities of increasing the efficiency of the IBFC converter. The procedure of the improvement is done by obtaining the equations of the current through each component in terms of converter parameters. The current is found in an average value or rms value, depending on the type of the parasitic component, whether it is modeled by a parasitic forward voltage source or by a parasitic resistance, respectively. Using these equations and the parasitic model, the losses of each element of the converter are estimated. This paper proposes a technique to increase the efficiency of the IBFC by redesigning the converter parameters. Furthermore, this paper presents a case of study with a step-by-step efficiency enhancement process of an existing driver. The driver is operating under universal input conditions, and 38 V output, supplying an LED luminary of 26.5 W. The new design shows an improvement of the efficiency from 82% in the old design to 89% in the proposed one. Moreover, the new design shows an improvement in the power factor and the THD and a 50% reduction in the output current ripple. Furthermore, a reduction in the number of components has been achieved, as it is found by the analysis that by adjusting the converter parameters, one diode can be removed. In this paper, the pinning process of pinned photodiodes (PPDs) is described by a new analytical model, assuming the PPD to be composed of inner and junction regions. There are two definitions of the pinning potential: maximum conduction band potential variation ($\Delta \varphi _{M}$) and maximum electron quasi-fermi level potential variation ($\Delta $ FP $_{M}$). The output of the previous pinning potential models is only an approximation of $\Delta \varphi _{M}$. In this paper, a comprehensive model is proposed in which both aforementioned definitions of pinning potential can be achieved analytically. The proposed model is a system of equations relating PPD’s main characteristics such as $\Delta \varphi _{M}$ and equilibrium full-well capacity to other main PPD parameters such as PPD spatial dimensions, impurity dopant concentrations, maximum inner region potential, and remnant carrier population at $\Delta \varphi _{M}$. Current density distribution in electric arcs inside low-voltage circuit breakers (LVCBs) is a crucial parameter for us to understand the complex physical behavior during the arcing process. In this paper, we investigate the inverse problem of reconstructing the current density distribution in arcs by inverting the magnetic field. This paper is focused on the modeling and computational phase for the magnetic inverse problem when linear ferromagnetic regions are considered in the model. To address the ill-posedness of the inverse problem, the standard method of least-squares approximation by Tikhonov regularization is studied, complemented with the generalized cross-validation criterion for regularization parameter selection. Considering the inclusion of a ferromagnetic region, two regularization approaches have been analyzed for the formulation of the currents in splitters and their corresponding magnetic field contribution. Effects of several features on the performance of the regularized solution have been investigated, including the signal-to-noise ratio, the value of permeability of the splitters, and the measurement distance. The numerical tests show the direct accessibility for the 3-D current density distribution with the proposed scheme, providing the accuracy and robustness for the applicability to study the arc behavior in LVCBs. This paper proposes a semianalytical model to estimate short-channel effects for independent gate operation in double-gate (DG) junctionless (JL) MOSFET incorporating gate-to-source/drain underlap, through the solution of Poisson’s equations in the subthreshold regime. The model also accounts for the asymmetry in device operation through variation in gate oxide thicknesses, gate work functions, and underlap lengths. Subthreshold drain current, threshold voltage, and subthreshold swing, evaluated from the channel potential, show reasonable agreement with simulation data. Results suggest the use of negative back gate bias and longer underlap length to reduce off-current. This paper highlights the role of doping, underlap length, and back gate bias in tuning the threshold voltage. This model serves as a generic formulation (within limits) with different asymmetries to estimate, design, and optimize self-aligned DG JL transistors for subthreshold logic applications. In this paper, the model predictive current control is introduced in the semicontrolled open-winding permanent magnet synchronous motor (OW-PMSM) generation system with a common dc bus to suppress the zero-sequence current for the first time. Particularly, the basic voltage vectors of the semicontrolled OW-PMSM, which are synthesized by the three-phase full-controlled converter and the three-phase uncontrollable diode bridge, is analyzed and their influences on the zero-sequence current are investigated for the first time in this paper. Then the current-error-based cost function that includes dq-axis current error and zero-sequence current error is designed to evaluate all the voltage vectors. Moreover, to further improve the steady-state control performance of the whole generation system, a zero-sequence current suppression method based on the uncontrollable side voltage vector adjustment, which has the advantage of low computation burden, is developed. In this method, two voltage vectors of the controllable converter are applied during one control period. Based on the distribution character of the basic voltage vector in the semicontrollable OW-PMSM generation system, the first voltage vector is selected according to the three-phase current direction to adjust equivalent vector of the uncontrollable diode bridge, whereas for the second voltage vector, the selection method based deadbeat voltage vector sector is designed to reduce the range of the candidate voltage vector. Conventional finite control set-model predictive control (FCS-MPC) applies single voltage vector within each control period. This leads to relatively high steady-state ripples and requires fast sampling rate. Additionally, enumeration-based optimal vector selection is computationally intensive. Recently, double-vector-based schemes have been proposed to improve the steady-state performance of FCS-MPC. However, they are usually complicated in vector selection and duty ratio calculation. In this paper, a universal multiple-vector-based MPC (UMV-MPC) is proposed, which achieves the same performance as the state-of-the-art double-vector-based MPC, but executes in a much more efficient and universal way. Unlike conventional FCS-MPC, enumerating process and state predictions for candidate voltage vectors are not required in the proposed UMV-MPC to select the best voltage vectors. In UMV-MPC, the optimal vectors and duty ratios are directly constructed from deadbeat control (DBC) based on space vector modulation (SVM), which is easy to follow and quick to use. The proposed UMV-MPC is not only more efficient than prior methods, but also reveals the inherent relationship between double-vector-based MPC and DBC with SVM. A comparative study of UMV-MPC and prior double-vector-based MPC is carried out in this paper. This paper discusses the marginal line loss approximation in the dc optimal power flow (DCOPF) and proposes a new methodology that improves the accuracy of current practices. In practice, the DCOPF solution may have significant differences compared to the ac base point that determines marginal losses, and this paper provides the only published example that illustrates this problem to our knowledge. The proposed methodology updates the marginal losses without solving a new ac base point so that the optimal solution accurately reflects system losses. Previously proposed methodologies require nonlinear programming solvers, additional ac power flow solutions, or are less accurate compared to actual losses, and they only give results for one or two test networks. Analyzing the harmonic distortions at the point of common coupling is thoroughly addressed in this two-part paper. The main aim of such an analysis is to identify which of the utility and customer sides is significantly responsible for the harmonic distortions at the point of common coupling. In Part I, the meaning of the dominant side is challenged fundamentally. Here, two different definitions for the dominant side are discussed: The side with the larger equivalent harmonic “voltage” or “current” source. It is shown that these definitions are not identical. Subsequently, common methods are categorized in three general concepts based on: the direction of active power flow, the reactive power, and the voltage-current ratio. These three categories as well as their validity are analytically reviewed for both the definitions. The concept based on the voltage–current ratio has been explicitly presented in the original work for identifying the dominant equivalent harmonic voltage source. This concept is developed in this paper for identifying the dominant equivalent harmonic current source as well. In Part II, the application of the methods is illustrated using some common calculation examples. In addition, these methods are described verbally to provide a physical interpretation. Electrical parameter estimation of the soil is an essential step for the design of grounding systems, and is based on optimization techniques that minimize the error between a theoretical function and the field measurements. The determining factor for reaching the most adequate solution depends on a method for solving the indefinite integral of the theoretical function, as well as the accuracy and performance of the parameter estimation. This paper presents a precise and tested technique for achieving these goals known as Chebyshev polynomials. This paper also introduces an error calculation procedure for the truncation of the Chebyshev series. Besides this, this paper points toward an optimization algorithm for estimating soil parameters by use of measurements associated with differential evolution. This paper presents a fundamental study of voltage collapses that occur on a post-fault trajectory of a stressed power system in seconds after large disturbances. The focus of the study are voltage collapses that are induced by certain load models. Using an n-machine-N-bus power system model, the paper explicitly shows that the voltage collapse is caused by the non-existence of a real, positive solution for a load voltage magnitude in different areas of a relative rotor angle space when the load is of non-linear type. These “areas without voltage solution” are denoted as Voltage Impasse Regions (VIR) and are mathematically characterized as trigonometric functions of (n -1) relative rotor angles. Once the post-fault trajectory enters a VIR, voltage magnitude solutions become complex or negative, the algebraic Jacobian becomes singular, and the behaviour of a system becomes undefined. The case study has been carried out using a simple 3-machine-1-load system with static load models. In the study, VIR appeared and enlarged as the non-linear (constant power and constant current) load increased. The neutral-point voltage-balancing control is a critical issue of a neutral-point-clamped converter. The conventional control strategy is to inject the specific zero-sequence voltage to regulate the redundant vector, but it is unacceptable to the three-phase four-wire system. This paper provides a neutral-point voltage-balancing control by the dipolar modulation, and the control freedom of the zero-sequence voltage is flexible. Therefore, the proposed method is suitable for both three-phase three-wire and three-phase four-wire systems. Besides, the proposed method improves the control dynamic in a reactive power system. In this paper, new half-bridge and full-bridge topologies for a switched-boost inverter are proposed. These topologies have a high boost factor in comparison with conventional types. In addition, the proposed topologies have continuous input current and can generate zero-voltage level in output. In this paper, the operation of the proposed inverters in different operating modes is analyzed. Then, the values of inductors and capacitors are designed. Moreover, the used switching pattern and its logical diagram are introduced. A comprehensive comparison between the proposed and conventional topologies in terms of the boost factor, the number of elements, and the efficiency shows the good features of the proposed inverters. The nine-switch converter is a multiport converter having two three-phase terminals and a dc-link, just like a 12-switch back-to-back (BTB) converter, but with 25% reduction of active switch count. However, the reduction from 12-switch to 9-switch may not always be an efficient choice considering losses in the switches. Only the load–source combination for the ac–ac common frequency mode and the source–source combination for the ac–dc different frequency (ac–dc DF) mode have been reported, so far, to yield relatively lower loss for the nine-switch converter. This paper shows that the nine-switch converter can have relatively lower loss even with a load–source combination, instead of only source–source combination in its ac–dc DF mode—when the upper terminal is connected to a dc load and the lower terminal is connected to an ac source. Mathematical proof is presented with derivation of the particular operating parameters for which the nine-switch converter will have comparatively lower losses. The analysis is validated with simulation and experimental results of a 1-kW system. The aim of this paper is to study the dynamics of a permanent magnet direct current (PMDC) brushed motor while two crucial space-domain effects, namely, slotting effect and commutation phenomenon are taken into account. Semi-analytical dynamic time-domain PMDC brushed motor model inclusive of these space-domain effects is used to analyze and investigate the dynamics. Pulse width modulation operated discontinuous current PMDC brushed motor drive with steady duty cycle is employed to acquire the bifurcation patterns. The chaotic nature due to slotting effect and commutation is identified from the bifurcation patterns and reported. It also has to be admired that such nonlinear dynamical behavior with the same set of parameters at similar operating condition has not been observed when a conventional PMDC brushed motor dynamic model is considered. These space-domain effects, namely, slotting effect and commutation also have a prominent impact to make some time-domain states of a PMDC brushed motor drive chaotic. The role of slotting effect and commutation phenomenon to analyze the chaos over time-domain state variables of the PMDC brushed motor drive is investigated and validated experimentally in this paper. This paper proposes a decentralized control scheme for controlling active and reactive power of grid-tied ac-stacked photovoltaic (PV) inverter architecture using single member phase compensation. Reactive power control is required for the next generation of grid-tied smart PV inverter systems in power networks with high PV penetration. The decentralized control scheme proposed in this paper allows for a fully distributed architecture, both in terms of active and reactive power control and physical implementation of a PV system. This will result in higher reliability and potentially lower cost with minimum communications requirements. A decentralized controller enables higher switching frequencies that can shrink passive components. Therefore, string voltage variations due to voltage drop across passive components will be negligible and the system will be controlled with minimum communications requirement. The relative gain array approach has been used to study the feasibility of the decentralized control scheme. Detailed modeling and analysis are provided to show the effectiveness of the proposed decentralized approach and the effect of this approach on control implementation. Finally, effectiveness of the proposed decentralized approach is verified using mathematical modeling, simulation, and a lab-scale experimental setup in different operation conditions. Back-electromotive force (back-EMF) self-sensing is commonly used in induction machine (IM) drive systems for its maintenance cost and safety considerations. In recent years, compared with standard indirect field oriented control, deadbeat-direct torque and flux control (DB-DTFC) has been shown to be a highly effective method for IM control with a fixed switching frequency. It has advantages such as fast torque dynamics with one step dynamic response for torque and flux with no current regulator. This paper evaluates the synergy between back-EMF self-sensing technology and DB-DTFC for IM drive systems. In this paper, an observer-based closed-loop back-EMF tracking self-sensing control in an IM DB-DTFC drive system is presented. It includes a back-EMF state filter, back-EMF tracking observer, and cascaded motion observer. Back-EMF harmonic decoupling is explored to improve the low-speed performance. The band-pass filter method (BPF) for back-EMF self-sensing is also presented. This paper proposes a battery simulator (BS) based on a Z-source rectifier (ZSR), with the intention of emulating the discharge or charge characteristic of an actual lithium-polymer battery with high voltage and large capacity. The proposed BS is used for power testing for battery applications. The battery model, combined with a Shepherd model and a Thevenin model, is adopted to freely change the properties and specifications of the battery and to replicate the dynamic behavior of the battery, which is discretized to utilize the digital controller of the BS. The closed-loop voltage controller at the dc side of the ZSR is designed to emulate the rapid dynamic characteristics of the battery based on small-signal methods, considering the influence of the components of the impedance network. An improved version of power flow-controller (PFC) which is based on multi-winding transformer (MWT) is presented in this paper. The objective of this article is to control the power flow in a power-line to alleviate overload in a heavily loaded system and increase power flow of an under loaded line. The novelty of multi-winding transformer based power-flow controller is the use of unequal voltage ratio in the tap-changer windings of MWT with bi-directional switches to provide a compensating voltage required to achieve the desired power flow. This new model drastically increases the number of compensating points to make it more compact with higher flexibility. It aims to utilize the full potential of a line (bound by its thermal limits) to contribute in power flow by providing several times higher resolution with limited number of switches and reduced amount of copper and iron volume compared to existing state-of-the-art technology. The proposed MWT model has been included in Newton Raphson Load Flow (NRLF) method for power flow analysis. The feasibility of the model has been realized using a standard 5 bus test system and a modified IEEE 57 bus system. Operation of the PFC has been demonstrated using a hardware laboratory prototype for generating nearest compensating points (voltage vectors) corresponding to the obtained compensating voltages after load flow solution. DC–DC converters are expected to interconnect High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) grids with different configurations or voltage levels, which will increase reliability and operational flexibility. The dc Modular Multilevel Converter (DC-MMC) is suggested as a potential non-isolated topology for HVDC applications. This paper presents an energy-based closed-loop control for the DC-MMC. Such control structure provides a full control of the current components, while ensuring energy balancing in normal and fault operation. First, the converter configuration is described and the fundamental equations are presented. Then, the normal operation of the converter is explained from the steady state conditions and the energy and current components. A closed-loop control is designed to ensure a proper dynamic response, balance the internal energies of the converter, and minimize the ac circulating current. Also, the control structure is modified to ensure dc fault ride through capability. This paper proposes an efficient dc voltage control scheme in rail transit traction power systems with reversible converters for dc voltage regulation and power sharing. The proposed dc voltage control scheme is executed in a hierarchical structure based on the optimal power flow. Unlike conversional constant dc voltage control applied in traction power systems, this scheme allows the reversible converters operating in both rectifier and inverter regions and considers regenerative braking power sharing among multiple traction substations. The steady-state equivalent models of traction power systems including reversible converters are established, and the ac/dc sequential power flow algorithm based on Newton–Raphson method is presented. Finally, a multi-trains dynamic operation simulation is carried out with Matlab. The simulation results prove the validity of proposed scheme and indicate that the system energy saving effect in traction power systems with reversible converters is obvious with proposed scheme. Voltage sags mitigation has become a significant concern for utilities due to the pressure from both customers and regulators recently. This paper proposes a novel multi-objective optimization formulation for STATCOM allocation problem to mitigate voltage sags. The allocation of STATCOM is formulated as a multi-objective optimization problem (MOP) with two conflicting objectives including the voltage sag performance and annual investment costs of STATCOM. To analytically evaluate the voltage sag performance in the optimization process, a mathematical voltage sag profile calculation model of power system with multiple STATCOMs is proposed and solved by nonlinear programming method. System Average RMS Variation Frequency index-X index is chosen to quantify the voltage sag performance for optimization. Sensitivity-based candidate bus selection is also performed as an essential step to reduce problem size. An improved multi-objective evolutionary algorithm (MOEA) called SPEA2+SDE (Strength Pareto Evolutionary Algorithm with shifting density estimation) is utilized to solve the proposed MOP model, so a set of Pareto optimal STATCOM allocations for voltage sag mitigation can be derived demonstrating the trade-off between two objectives and better supporting the decision-making. The parameters of a harmonic source change with the fluctuating background voltage and current in electric power system, which makes it difficult to establish accurate harmonic models. To solve this problem, a dynamic parameter model (DPM) for harmonic source networks is proposed in this paper. By equating the parameters of a harmonic source as a polynomial of voltage and current, the proposed model can adjust parameters accordingly. The model is not only suitable for a single harmonic source but also for complex harmonic source networks. The process of modeling need no internal information of the harmonic source. The performance of the model is, for different configurations of the harmonic source, compared to the performance of other harmonic models. The paper comprises a new systematic approach to determine the critical ambient field needed for positive streamer propagation in nonuniform field gaps. It is shown that such critical streamer penetration field is a function of the basic value previously established for uniform field gaps and the degree of ambient field nonuniformity. The latter quantity is defined by the ratio of the maximum to mean ambient electric fields along the streamer propagation path, which can be determined either analytically or by charge simulation. Such functional dependence of the critical streamer penetration gradient on field nonuniformity has been determined for different rod topologies of rod-plane gap as well as for single and bundle conductor plane gaps. The model is used to determine critical streamer penetration fields and streamer lengths under different impulse voltage levels for different gap configurations and for a tall ground structure exposed to ambient impulse field. This paper has the purpose to derive an analytical model ("continuum" model) able to describe the behavior of partial discharge (PD) repetition rate and amplitude, occurring in a cavity embedded in polymeric insulation, as a function of the frequency of the supply voltage, going from AC power supply frequency, 50–60 Hz, to DC. In the range between DC and 50–60 Hz focus is made on data coming from tests under AC sinewave with very low frequency (VLF) such as 0.1 Hz and 0.01 Hz, which are commonly used for cable testing. It is shown that the proposed "continuum" model can provide reasonably good fit to the experimental results obtained in the range DC to 60 Hz, regarding PD repetition rate and amplitude. To reach such result, the equivalent circuit is modified from that commonly used and made by fully-capacitive or resistive components, in order to take into account the change of polarization mechanisms which, depending on dielectric material, may play a non-negligible role to establish the repetition rate from low frequency to DC power supply. In addition, the residual voltage after a PD event has to vary with frequency to reach good fitting. Also, it is shown that PD amplitude under DC and VLF can be lower than under AC 50–60 Hz due to the delay time of the firing electron, thus experimental PD amplitude varies with frequency depending on material and defect typology and location. This paper presents an improved rotating restart method for a sensorless permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) drive system using repetitive zero voltage vectors. To restart the sensorless PMSM drive system, a method for estimating initial rotor position and speed is required due to the absence of sensors such as encoders and resolvers. The rotor position and speed can be estimated using the short-circuit current vectors generated by applying zero voltage vectors. However, the estimated rotor position and speed can be inaccurate. The inaccurate rotor position that causes the current is distorted by the back-electromotive force of the PMSM, and it is impossible to precisely control the system. Therefore, an improved rotating restart method for the sensorless PMSM drive system using repetitive zero voltage vectors is proposed. Stalling of residential air conditioners (RACs) following a transient fault can delay the voltage recovery ranging from 3 to 20 seconds. This phenomenon is referred to as fault-induced delayed voltage recovery (FIDVR). Several aggregated RAC models have been presented to replicate the actual FIDVR events. However, they usually have two main drawbacks as: i) considering independent stalling voltage and stalling time for all RACs, ii) resulting in only two ultimate modes; either 100% stalled or 100% normal running. This paper amends the abovementioned shortcomings by proposing a simple and effective performance-based RAC model. The proposed model utilizes a simple explicit relation between the stalling voltage and its required time to stall the RAC, furthermore, it can stall a fraction of RACs based on the voltage dip characteristics. The experimental results support the proposed model and computer simulations employing the IEEE 118-bus test system and Iran's electricity grid reveal the effectiveness of the proposed model.
