The simulation of electric field transients in HVDC cables can be a fundamental tool to support insulation system design when operation dynamics, which includes voltage polarity inversions and load variation, becomes significant during the expected cable life. The field behavior during voltage and temperature transients is associated with intrinsic and extrinsic ageing processes that can affect the cable design life. Traditional models employed for electric field simulations consider only the non–linear, steady–state dependence of conductivity on temperature and field magnitude, but they neglect the transient behavior of permittivity and conductivity, that is, polarization and charge trapping phenomena. These processes impact on the duration of the field transient and thus ageing. This paper discusses the numerical implementation of an electro–quasistatic model that can be used to perform transient simulations of electric fields in HVDC cables insulation. With respect to the model traditionally employed, the presented one is extended with Debye's equations for dielectric polarization processes. The model is implemented numerically using finite differences, or the Occhini equivalent circuit: this paper demonstrates that the two approaches are equivalent. This paper proposes a Principal Component Analysis (PCA)-based method to construct composite indices to rapidly assess power system transient stability. By assigning appropriate weights to a few selected sub-indicators, a composite index can be constructed to guarantee a better coverage of worst-case stability scenarios of the power system. This paper provides an automatic method to construct a composite index with four sub-indicators calculated by the integral of acceleration, speed deviation and rotor angle of generators over a certain integration period using PCA. The effectiveness of the sub-indicators is validated first, followed by a comprehensive example of process of composite index construction, and the assessment of the influence of the effect of integration period on the performance of the composite index. This paper investigates the transient stability of power systems co-dominated by different types of grid-forming (GFM) devices. Synchronous generators (SGs and VSGs) and droop-controlled inverters are typical GFM devices in modern power systems. SGs/VSGs are able to provide inertia while droop-controlled inverters are generally inertialess. The transient stability of power systems dominated by homogeneous GFM devices has been extensively studied. Regarding the hybrid system jointly dominated by heterogeneous GFM devices, the transient stability is rarely reported. This paper aims to fill this gap. It is found that the synchronization behavior of the hybrid system can be described by a second-order motion equation, resembling the swing equation of SGs. Moreover, two significant differences from conventional power systems are discovered. The first is that the droop control dramatically enhances the damping effect, greatly affecting the transient stability region. The second is that the frequency state variable exhibits a jump at the moment of fault disturbances, thus impacting the post-fault initial-state location and stability assessment. The underlying mechanism behind the two new characteristics is clarified and the impact on the transient stability performance is analyzed and verified. Transient stability of a power system can be significantly affected by wind power generators due to their stochastic power output and complex dynamic characteristics. This paper proposes a robust optimization approach for coordinating generation dispatch and emergency load shedding against transient instability under uncertain wind power output. The problem is modelled as a two-stage robust optimization (TSRO) model considering transient stability constraints, where the first-stage is to optimize the generation dispatch (preventive control) before a contingency and the second-stage decision is the emergency load shedding (emergency control) after the contingency occurrence under the worst case of wind power variation. To solve this TSRO problem, this paper also proposes a solution algorithm which integrates transient stability assessment and transient stability constraint construction in a column and constraint generation framework. The proposed method is validated on the New-England 39-bus system and the Nordic32 system, which shows high computational efficiency and stability robustness against uncertain wind power. Co-simulation of heterogeneous systems allows for in-depth analysis of various aspects of power systems’ operation while staying within the environments of the simulation tools that are best fit to represent their respective domains. Equipped with a proprietary co-simulation platform, the paper focuses on the issue of power-conjugate coupling between parts of power grids modeled in transient stability and electromagnetic transient simulation tools. The problems of co-simulation stability and precision in presence of delays are tackled by means of designing a proper coupling interface. It is shown that two established interface methods – the V-I method and the Transmission Line Interface – are special cases of a generalized interface framework proposed in the paper. Moreover, a new interface algorithm is described by parametrizing the generalized framework. Analytical tools are also formulated to aid in the analysis of interface stability and precision via the concepts of passivity and transparency. The increasing complexity of modern AC/DC power systems poses a significant challenge to a fast solution of large-scale transient stability simulation problems. This paper proposes the hybrid parallel-in-time-and-space (PiT+PiS) transient simulation on the CPU-GPU platform to thoroughly exploit the parallelism from time and spatial perspectives, thereby fully utilizing parallel processing hardware. The respective electromechanical and electromagnetic aspects of the AC and DC grids demand a combination of transient stability (TS) simulation and electromagnetic transient (EMT) simulation to reflect both system-level and equipment-level transients. The TS simulation is performed on GPUs in the co-simulation, while the Parareal parallel-in-time (PiT) scheduling and EMT simulation are conducted on CPUs. Therefore, the heterogeneous CPU-GPU scheme can utilize asynchronous computing features to offset the data transfer latency between different processors. Higher scalability and extensibility than GPU-only dynamic parallelism design is achieved by utilizing concurrent GPU streams for coarse-grid and fine-grid computation. A synthetic AC/DC grid based on IEEE-118 Bus and CIGRÉ DCS2 systems showed a good accuracy compared to commercial TSAT software, and a speedup of 165 is achieved with 48 IEEE-118 Bus systems and 192 201-Level detail-modeled MMCs. Online transient analysis plays an increasingly important role in dynamic power grids as the renewable generation continues growing. Traditional numerical methods for transient analysis not only are computationally intensive but also require precise contingency information as input, and therefore, are not suitable for online applications. Existing online transient assessment studies focus on the determination of post-contingency system stability or stability margin. This paper develops a novel graph-learning framework, Deep-learning Neural Representation or DNR, for online prediction, of the time-series trajectories of the system states using initial system responses that can be measured by phasor measurement units (PMUs). The proposed DNR framework consists of two sequential modules: a Network Constructor that captures network dependencies among generators, and a Dynamics Predictor that predicts the system trajectories. The key to improved prediction performance is the introduction of the spatio-temporal message-passing operations into graph neural networks with structural knowledge. Its effectiveness and scalability are validated through comparative studies, demonstrating the prediction performance under different contingency scenarios for systems of different sizes. This framework provides a solution to online predicting post-fault system dynamics based on real-time PMU measurements. This paper summarizes the work performed by the Task Force —within Performance Characteristic Subcommittee of IEEE PES Transformers Committee— to investigate potential revisions to IEEE Std C57.142-2010. Although the scope of this document does not implicitly exclude HV and EHV systems, the existing document primarily includes examples and information on distribution voltage systems. A Task Force was formed to investigate the need to include information about power system transient events on HV systems more explicitly in this existing document. The Task Force was charged with the following tasks:-Establish system voltages encompassed by C57-142-2010 Guide. -Gather field data, reports, and literature on HV and EHV failures related to substation transients and transformer interaction. -Solicit input from the other technical committees on this subject. -Review IEC and CIGRE work in this area. -Recommend course of action on revision of the present Guide. -Recommend high level changes to the Guide. -Prepare final paper for the Subcommittee. In the course of this work several failure scenarios were identified. These are categorized and the failures are described in this paper. The final recommendations to the Subcommittee are summarized and recommendations are presented for the course of action on the revision/addition of HV and EHV material to the current C57.142 Guide. When a single-phase-to-ground (SPG) fault occurs in distribution networks, the existing faulty feeder detection techniques do not present reliable detection results. This paper introduces a novel faulty feeder detection method based on transient energy and cosine similarity. First, the fault characteristics of transient zero-sequence current (TZSC) are analyzed. It is found that the fault transient characteristics of transient components decrease as the grounding resistance increases. Second, to fully maintain the fault transient features, a fundamental frequency component (FFC) shifting method is introduced to remove FFCs. Next, the transient currents without containing FFCs are utilized to generate two fault indicators: transient energy within the first half power cycle and cosine similarity after the first half power cycle. After that step, to effectively merge the two fault indicators, the Laplace distribution is utilized. The fault possibility of each feeder can be quantitatively estimated by calculating the cumulative density function (CDF). Finally, the feeder with the maximum fault possibility is determined as the faulty feeder. The effectiveness and applicability of the proposed detection method are verified in the radial distribution network and the modified IEEE 34-bus distribution network. The classical electromagnetic time reversal (EMTR) fault location method in power systems requires multiple simula-tions in the backward step, assuming different guessed fault loca-tions along the line. This process can be time consuming especially when a high location accuracy is desired, as it may require a significant number of guessed fault locations. To cope with this issue, the concept of EMTR in mismatched media has recently been introduced, allowing reducing the backward simulations to a single run and, thus, substantially improving the computation efficiency of the EMTR-based fault location technique. In this paper, we present a detailed study of the mismatched-media-based mirrored minimum energy property. This property has been applied in a few recent studies but never been theoretically studied and rigorously demonstrated. First, we infer a transfer function that relates the fault source to the voltage along the line resulting from back-injecting the time-reversed transients measured at a given observation point. We present a theorem according to which, at the fault switching frequency and its odd harmonics, the mirror-image point of the fault location with respect to the line center corresponds to a local minimum of the squared modulus of the transfer function. Then, it is proved that the mirrored minimum energy property is a corollary of this theorem. Based on these theoretical findings, we propose an algorithm that utilizes the reversed-time voltage energy as a fault location metric in the frequency domain. We further advance a data-driven strategy to maximize the computation efficiency of the fault location procedure. In this paper, an improved dynamic state estimation (DSE) based protection (DSEBP) scheme is proposed for transmission lines in MMC-HVDC grids. Firstly, a dynamic model of the protection zone (DC line of interest) is constructed using differential and algebraic equations. The impact of frequency dependent line parameters is mitigated through the utilization of the “line mode” transmission line model. Then, a novel Runge-Kutta (RK) discretization scheme is proposed to consider the dynamics of the control variables during electromagnetic transients, yielding reduced discretization error as compared to the conventional RK scheme. Finally, the batch mode regression framework based DSE is developed to formulate the protection logic considering errors of both measurements and historical estimates. Numerical experiments have shown that the proposed DSEBP scheme can dependably detect and trip internal faults, and securely ignore the external faults. The proposed scheme achieves improved reliability and operational speed as compared with the existing DSEBP schemes. The proposed scheme only requires a typical sampling rate of 10k samples per second, has the robustness to measurement noises, and the calculation burden is low enough for practical implementations. In this paper, the validity of two extended transmission line approaches proposed for calculating the ground-return impedance and admittance of an underground insulated cable is evaluated taking as reference a full-wave approach based on the 3-D finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method. The transient responses of an underground cable with realistic radius are calculated for a wide range of soil resistivities and cable lengths. It is shown that the extended transmission line approaches lead to transient waveforms in good agreement with the FDTD method even for relatively short cables and high soil resistivity. The limitations of a traditional formulation that neglects the influence of the ground-return admittance on the calculation of the cable parameters are also demonstrated. Deep learning (DL) techniques have shown promising performance for designing data-driven power system transient stability assessment (TSA) models. However, due to the deep structure of the DL, the resulting model is always a black-box and hard to explain, which hinders its practical adoption by the industry. This paper proposes an interpretable DL-based TSA model to balance the TSA accuracy and transparency. The proposed method combines the strong nonlinear modelling capability of a deep neural network and the interpretability of a decision tree (DT). Through regularizing DL-based model with the average DT path length in the training process, the proposed interpretable DL-based TSA method can visually explain the TSA decision-making process. Simulation results have shown that the proposed method can deliver highly accurate TSA results and interpretable TSA decision-making rules, which can be used for designing preventive control actions. Accurate calculation of circulating current in stator transposition windings is a prerequisite for the design of stator windings in large synchronous compensators. Due to its special operating conditions, such as transient strong excitation and strong overload, the main field, magnetic saturation and transient variation should be considered in calculation of circulating current. For this, a 3-D full-domain non-linear transient electromagnetic problem considering the real transposition structure and rotor motion has to be solved, but existing methods cannot achieve. In this paper, a new electromagnetic network method (ENM) based on the equivalence of local magnetic field (ELMF) is proposed to solve the problem of calculation of the transient circulating current in stator transposition windings considering main field and magnetic saturation. Then, the proposed method is applied to an example of a 300Mvar synchronous condenser and verified by the indirect method combining experiment and FEM. Expansion of power grids has resulted in the construction of multiple transmission lines within constrained spaces inevitably making them nonuniform in nature. Existing transmission line models available in electromagnetic transient (EMT) simulators are based on classical multiconductor transmission line (MTL) theory with the assumption that the transmission lines are infinitely long and have uniform cross-sectional dimensions. This paper develops a time-domain model, namely dispersive scattered field transmission line (DSFTL) model, for multiconductor dispersive nonuniform overhead transmission lines above lossy, frequency-dependent ground. The proposed model which consists of closed-form equations in the time-domain has been implemented using a modified finite-difference time-domain (MFDTD) algorithm and integrated into an EMT simulator (PSCAD/EMTDC). Results have been compared with and verified by those obtained using a full-wave approach and measured data available in the literature. DC cables are supposed to withstand a number of operations involving supply-voltage peak-value time variations, such as energization, switch off and polarity inversion. It is known that voltage-supply time variations cause electric field transients in cable insulation that can last for a long time before steady-state conditions are achieved, and during this time the electric field distribution is not only driven by electrical conductivity, as in steady state, but also by permittivity, as in AC. This paper shows that highly energetic degradation phenomena, that is, partial discharges, PD, can occur during voltage transients that a DC cable has to withstand during life. This results in a cumulative damage which can cause premature insulation breakdown, at times well shorter than those expected based on a cable design which is PD free under steady-state conditions. Quantification of the damage caused by PD, based on aging and residual life models, is proposed in the paper, and it is shown that damage can be significant enough to pose a threat for cable life when operation transient rate is e.g., a few per day, and that the faster the slew rate of the supply voltage variation, the highest the cumulative damage due to PD. This paper proposes a Transient Stability Constrained Optimal Power Flow (TSCOPF) formulation that models non-synchronous renewable generation equipped with synthetic inertia. The proposed optimization problem calculates the optimal operating point of the system, accommodating high shares of non-synchronous renewable generation while ensuring transient stability in the event of critical incidents. Synthetic inertia controllers are used to improve the dynamic stability of the system in cases of very high share of renewable generation. The proposed tool is tested in the North-West Spanish system, a network with a high penetration of wind energy that causes a reduction in the total system inertia. The results of the study show that 1) synthetic inertia in renewable power plants can diminish electromechanical oscillations after a severe contingency, reducing the cost of ensuring transient stability; 2) using synthetic inertia the system becomes more stable when conventional generation is decommissioned following de-carbonization and renewable promotion policies; and 3) the proposed model can be used to calculate the parameters of the synthetic inertia control. This paper introduces a novel frequency domain technique to globally evaluate the accuracy of electro-magnetic transient simulations. It is shown that simulation accuracy at low frequencies can sometimes be poorer than at high frequency. A modified approach which quantifies accuracy from a driving point as a function of frequency is also introduced that uses the Bilinear Transformation and Norton equivalents, to produce a “simulation accuracy spectrum”. This approach can be applied to large systems without explicitly forming state space equations. It also permits the accuracy analysis of networks with distributed components such as frequency dependent transmission lines. Two examples are used to verify the proposed technique, a small network with a frequency dependent transmission line modeled by the universal line model; and the IEEE 39 bus system connected with an LCC-HVdc system. The paper presents the results of experimental registrations and numerical simulations of the transient overvoltages caused by single phase intermittent arc earth fault in 35 kV network with isolated neutral. Experimental laboratory investigation is performed in order to implement appropriate arc fault model for arcs with low and discontinuous current. Single phase to earth arc fault is created in field in 35 kV network. Numerical model of the system is created in EMTP-ATP software. With widespread application of voltage source converter (VSC) as a key energy-conversion power electronic device by using the phase-locked loop (PLL) technique for synchronization, the system dynamics has become much complicated. In this paper, the nonlinear dynamics and transient stability of the PLL-based VSC system are investigated, within a unified framework of the (normalized) generalized swing equation. It is found that there are three different types of bifurcation, including the generalized saddle-node, Hopf, and homoclinic bifurcations. Within the coexistence parameter region, the basin boundary of the stable equilibrium point shows either a closed-loop or a fish-like pattern. With the help of the equal area criterion (EAC), the transient stabilities under different transient disturbances including short circuit, voltage dip, and power rise are analyzed. Because the equivalent damping of the VSC is state-dependent, the theoretical results based on the EAC are examined. Furthermore, based on the analytical results from the generalized swing equation, the principle for all major transient stability enhancement methods is uncovered. All these findings are well verified by extensive electromagnetic transient simulations. Therefore, the generalized swing equation provides a deeper physical insight and plays a crucial role in transient stability problems in power-electronic-dominated power systems, similar to the swing equation in traditional power systems. Since the wide application of virtual synchronous generators (VSGs), the power grid faces great challenges in the safe and stable operation due to their limited thermal capacity and weak anti-disturbance ability. During transient period, for example, a fault occurs in the transmission line, the VSG may lose the transient angle stability and provoke the current hard limit. Even if the fault is cleared by tripping of line, it still faces the problem of instability and voltage dips. To address this problem, in this paper, the post-fault large-signal model of VSG is derived first via the travelling waves based fault information acquisition. Subsequently, with the effect of both active and reactive power loops taken into account, a two-stage simultaneous control scheme is proposed for improving the transient stability of VSG, while considering the current limitation during fault state and voltage support after fault clearance. This method is fulfilled by mode switching and an additional feedback control based on the fault signal. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed method under both symmetrical and asymmetrical faults is verified. Moreover, the application of the proposed method in a multiple VSGs system is also verified. Machine learning approaches have exhibited high potential in power system transient stability assessment (TSA), yet their initial preparation stages of stability knowledge base generation (SKBG) based on time-domain simulations often undergo high computational costs. In fact, how to ease the heavy computational burden of SKBG without sacrificing the reliability is still a significant challenge. To address this problem, this paper develops a semi-supervised ensemble learning (SSEL) framework for reliable SKBG acceleration, without additional need for computing hardware upgrading. In particular, it performs detailed simulations for a minority of cases and fast simulations for the majority ones to reduce the total computation time. Considering the absence of stability status information of those fast simulated cases, an SSEL scheme is systematically designed to reliably label their stability status. Before implementing SSEL, two concise feature descriptors are first introduced to efficiently extract transient features from multiplex system trajectories. Then, all the cases are characterized in a unified feature space, whereby a series of semi-supervised support vector machines are trained in randomly formed subspaces. Afterward, these single machines are systematically combined to derive an enhanced SSEL model, which is able to make reliable and robust labeling decisions. Further, a backtrace strategy is carefully devised for SSEL, so as to maintain the high reliability of SKBG. The paper proposes methodology for development of dynamic equivalent model of hybrid renewable energy source (HRES) plant suitable for reliable assessment of the overall transient stability of the realistic, large power systems. Transient stability index is used for system stability assessment, and consequently for the evaluation of the model performance. The historical plant production data and transmission network short-circuit fault statistics, together with probabilistically modelled uncertainties associated with system operation, are used to generate a set of realistic dynamic responses of the plant over the period of one year. The use of clustering algorithms enabled unsupervised grouping/clustering of responses and development of the low order equivalent models in the form of a transfer function with voltage as an input and real and reactive power as outputs. The methodology is illustrated on a number of case studies using two HRES plant configurations. It is demonstrated that a very few low order dynamic models can be used to model the HRES plant during the year for sufficiently accurate transient stability assessment of the power system. The possibility of deriving these equivalent models based on forecasted HRES plant composition makes them attractive for practical application in power system dynamic security studies. Power system control and transient stability analysis play essential roles in secure system operation. Control of power systems typically involves highly nonlinear and complex dynamics. Most of the existing works address such problems with additional assumptions in system dynamics, leading to a requirement for a complete and general solution. This paper, therefore, proposes a novel control framework for various power system control and stability problems leveraging a learning-based approach. The proposed framework includes a two-module structure that iteratively and jointly learns the candidate Lyapunov function and control law via deep neural networks in a learning module. Meanwhile, it guides the learning procedure towards valid results satisfying Lyapunov conditions in a falsification module. The introduced termination criteria ensure provable system stability. This control framework is verified through several studies handling different types of power system control problems. The results show that the proposed framework is generalizable and can simplify the control design for complex power systems with the stability guarantee and enlarged region of attraction. In this paper, novel neutral reactor structures are proposed to mitigate the secondary arc current (SAC) in non-conventional Multi-circuit Multi-voltage Transmission lines (MCMVTLs). The parameters of the reactors in the structure are optimized using the Non-dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm II (NSGA-II). The optimization algorithm, coded in Python, regulates the multiple runs of an Electromagnetic Transients (EMT) simulation program to minimize the secondary arc current. The optimization trials are run in parallel on a 64 core computer to minimize the solution time. A detailed arc model was tested on the EMT program (PSCAD). Using this model and optimized parameters in the proposed neutral reactor schemes, the SAC is indeed extinguished in acceptable times. The SAC and TRV for neutral reactors with optimized parameters are up-to 68 and 77%, respectively, lower than the ones with parameters calculated by the conventional approach which ignores inter-circuit coupling. This paper reports the application of silicon bipolar junction transistor (BJT) modeling techniques to the modeling of dynamic behavior of high-voltage 4H-SiC BJTs, and the experimental validation thereof. High-voltage silicon BJTs are impractical due to their low current gain that requires a bulky base driver. Emergence of high-voltage 4H-SiC vertical NPN BJTs with a tenfold higher gain enables the application of efficient drivers, with ratings close to those of IGBTs. This paper demonstrates the advantages offered by 4H-SiC BJTs by means of wide-scale measurements at 800 V and 10 A in a range of temperatures up to 175 °C and adjusted base driver switching rates. This paper shows that the turn-off storage delay in the SiC BJT is two orders of magnitude lower than that of the silicon device. It also shows that the turn-on switching transients of SiC device are by an order of magnitude and the turn-off transients are by two orders of magnitude faster than that of its silicon counterpart, resulting in a tenfold reduction of the switching energy. It also demonstrates the temperature dependence of switching transients of the silicon BJT, and the relative temperature-invariance of the SiC device's performance. This paper concludes with validation of the transient models for the 4H-SiC NPN BJT, showing that the model is sufficiently accurate for transient switching and loss calculations. A noninvasive approach for high-voltage (HV) circuit breaker (CB) diagnosis, based on the time–frequency analysis of the transient electric fields (E-fields) radiated due to switching operations outside the enclosure [switching transient E-fields (STEFs)], is presented in this paper. By use of a synthetic test platform, this paper measures the STEFs generated by CBs working in both normal and fault status and analyses their primary parameters, such as the amplitude, the center frequency, and the number of pulses. The correlation between the different working status of the CBs and the time–frequency characteristics of their STEFs is established. Based on the comparison and analysis of the main features, the STEFs could reflect the operating states and serve as an indicator of the early insulation defect of the HV CBs. The proposed defect detection method has been validated experimentally, which makes the most of the high changing rate of the induced current on the CB enclosure that itself is a weak signal and hard to capture by traditionally adopted means. This paper presents an analysis of resonant faults and their transient responses on half-wavelength lines. This type of transmission line has been studied for many years in countries that need alternatives for bulk power transmission over very long distances. An important issue for this technology is the occurrence of critical faults, which produce peculiar behavior in the main electrical entities and can jeopardize line insulation and compromise system stability. Here, the main factors influencing the severity of faults are analyzed: the type of fault and fault location. This paper shows that faults involving positive and negative sequences are the most critical when applied at specific regions and produce high voltage and power with a high rate of rise. The necessity for a mitigation method that removes this severe resonant fault condition until the operation of a protection system is discussed, and such a method is established. A method using two spark gaps with a new and improved location criterion is proposed, tested and evaluated, providing promising results for controlling voltage and power at terminal substations. This paper presents a novel approach to dynamic phasor-based transient stability simulation. The proposed method is based on the modified nodal analysis (MNA) approach to circuit simulation, which is used to construct continuous differential-algebraic equations (DAEs). The proposed method makes use of the stamp technique, which makes it possible to construct a general purpose MNA-based simulator. Stamp-based models for common power system components are derived in this work. A new MNA-based synchronous machine model is presented, which represents machines as nonlinear inductances instead of subtransient equivalents. The resultant continuous DAEs are numerically solved using the general purpose variable step and variable order library IDA. Simulation results from the IEEE 68 bus test system, a real 400 bus power system, and the IEEE 39 bus test system with an embedded HVdc transmission system demonstrate that the proposed method is suitable for large ac networks with power electronic devices. The results demonstrate good agreement between the proposed method and electromagnetic transient (EMT) simulation. While many machine learning approaches have been widely applied to power system online dynamic stability assessment, how to sufficiently learn spatial-temporal correlations from system transients without losing the interpretability is still a challenging issue. In this paper, a novel networked time series shapelet learning approach is proposed to learn spatial-temporal correlations for transient stability assessment (TSA) in an interpretable manner. Specifically, a network impedance-based adjacency matrix is first introduced to characterize spatial networked correlations. Based on graph structural regularization, this matrix is effectively incorporated into the subsequent learning procedure as spatial constraints. Taking time series trajectories acquired from multiple buses as the inputs, networked shapelet learning is heuristically performed to learn critical sequential features, i.e., networked shapelets, for TSA model derivation. With the learning procedure strategically guided by inherent spatial-temporal correlations of the system, the obtained data-driven TSA model is able to perform highly reliable and interpretable online TSA. This paper focuses on the transient modelling of a specific type of permanent magnet linear synchronous machine designed for line-start operation. The machine uses conductive ladders embedded in the mover to realise a permanent-magnet machine capable of line-start operation. Transient modelling of this type of machine under line-start conditions is critical to optimising machine design, and electrical and mechanical performance prediction, which leads us to devise a novel set of matrices of electrical parameters first. These matrices are developed considering both the impact of the conductive ladders and the longitudinal end effect based on electromagnetic field analysis. The model is then suitable for numerical computation in typical simulation environments. This yields a sufficiently accurate transient model that is verified by experimental results. Hence our novel model, that includes the longitudinal end effects and the effects of conductive ladders, is proven effective in predicting the line-start transients and associated electrical and mechanical performance. The novel model assists in the design optimisation stage where a compromise between synchronised performance and line-start operation is required. This paper presents an optimal transient-stability control strategy that modulates the real power injected and absorbed by distributed energy-storage devices. These devices are located at the high-voltage bus of several generators in a synchronous power system. The system is broken into areas based upon groupings of generators. The control strategy consists of two parallel feedback loops. One loop focuses on preserving the synchronism of the generator to its own area. The second loop focuses on preserving the synchronism of a given area to the other areas. Each control loop strategy is based upon local and center-of-inertia frequency measurements. The strategy is derived from two perspectives. With the first, the goal is to remove as much kinetic energy gained during a disturbance as quickly as possible before it is converted to potential energy. With the second perspective, an optimal transient control cost-function is minimized. Both perspectives result in the same strategy. The performance of the control strategy is evaluated on a four-machine power system model and on a 34-generator reduced-order model of the western North-American grid. This paper shows a comparison between Vector fitting and rational Krylov fitting techniques for the determination of rational models concerning the fitting accuracy, the computational performances and the model order. Primarily, the mathematics behind the second technique are presented. It should be noted that rational Krylov fitting have never been used in transmission line modeling. A new procedure is proposed to use rational Krylov fitting instead of vector fitting in the universal line model (ULM). Furthermore, it is demonstrated that this procedure has several advantages over the traditional one. In transient stability simulators such as PSS/E, the bus frequency is estimated using a window of (positive-sequence) phasor angle measurements. A digital filter is often used to account for the filtering effect in actual measurement devices and to eliminate sudden changes during frequency computations. Although transient stability simulators label the filtered angle derivative as the “frequency,” the frequency provided by such programs does not match actual measurements reported by phasor measurement units (PMUs), which makes it difficult to gauge the validity of studies (e.g., wide-area event detection and control applications) that are based on such simulations. In this paper, we implement a frequency computation method directly using positive phasor angles provided by simulators. The proposed method is tested on two systems extensively and validated against the measurements of an actual PMU. The improved frequency measurements closely match PMU responses. Transient recovery characteristics of DC voltage are critical to analyze the stability criterion and the fault ride-through capability of voltage source converter (VSC)-based DC power systems. In this paper, the dynamic model of a flexible DC power grid was initially established, and then, the dynamic operation mechanism of the system was presented by analyzing the movement locus of the operating point when disturbances occur in the DC grid. Subsequently, the DC transient voltage limit and the DC fault clearing time were calculated in order to obtain the transient stability criterion of the DC power system. In addition, a novel voltage transient recovery control strategy was proposed by improving the droop control of the DC voltage to extend the transient stability margin of the power system. Finally, a typical multi-terminal flexible DC power grid was developed on a hardware-in-the-loop platform. The results demonstrated that the voltage recovery ability of the DC power system can be quantitatively estimated by the stability criterion, while the system transient stability can be improved by the proposed control strategy. This paper proposes a fractional-order sliding mode controller (FOSMC) for fixed-time stability of multimachine power systems. Fractional calculus has been applied in sliding mode control (SMC) to design FOSMC which can better suppress the chattering phenomenon than the traditional integer-order SMC. Hence, a FOSMC is proposed to regulate the excitation of synchronous generators to improve the transient stability of the power system. In addition, the FOSMC can maintain the multimachine power systems stabilization in an upper bound and measurable convergence time independent of the initial operating conditions of the power system. The Lyapunov function is implemented to demonstrate the stability of multimachine power systems under the FOSMC, and the upper bound convergence time of the power system is generally estimated. The New England 10-machine 39-bus power system is taken into simulation to test the effectiveness and superior performances of the FOSMC than the existing control methods under different operating conditions. Meanwhile, the FOSMC with different orders are presented to verify that the FOSMC can better restrain the chattering phenomenon than traditional integer-order SMC. Simulation results show that the FOSMC can effectively reduce the chattering phenomenon and ensure the power system stabilization in an upper bound time, thus enhancing the dynamic performances of the power system. Single-phase auto-reclosing (AR) scheme is widely employed in extra high voltage (EHV) transmission networks to quench transient faults without completely removing the faulted transmission line (TL). Long EHV TLs are commonly equipped with shunt reactors to reduce the Ferranti effect overvoltages. It is common practice to disconnect these reactors under the heavy load periods during the year. Considering this point, the AR technique should be able to work properly not only when the TL shunt reactors are in service, but also when they are disconnected. This paper puts forward a novel adaptive single-phase AR approach for shunt compensated TLs based on the general mathematical model of faulted phase voltage waveform after the line isolation, which is obtained by analytical analysis conducted on the TL's equivalent circuit. The effect of capacitor voltage transformer (CVT) on the voltage measurement is taken into account using a proper model for the CVT. Performing some data processing on the faulted phase measured voltage, useful features are extracted which are used by the support vector machine classifier to reliably detect the arc extinction instant. The renewable energy source based generating technologies and flexible demand and storage devices exhibit significant temporal and spatial uncertainties in generating and loading profiles and introduce additional level of uncertainty in network operation. The dynamic behaviors of such a network can be affected and the stable operation may be compromised. This paper proposes a probabilistic analysis approach for the evaluation of the effect of uncertain parameters on power system voltage and angular stability. Load margin, the damping of critical eigenvalues and the transient stability index have been chosen as the relevant stability indices for voltage stability, small-disturbance stability, and transient stability analysis, respectively. The Morris screening sensitivity analysis method coupled with a multivariate Gaussian copula to account for parameter correlations is used for the priority ranking of uncertain parameters. The approach is illustrated on a number of case studies using modified IEEE 68-bus NETS-NYPS test system. The results obtained in this paper reveal that the critical parameters appear as groups if the input dataset is correlated, and, hence even a parameter (which may be uninfluential individually) can have a significant impact on system dynamic behavior due to its correlation with other influential parameters. The three-phase dual active bridge (3p-DAB) converter is a promising topology for high power dc–dc conversion due to advantages of bidirectional power flow, inherent soft-switching capability, and reduced filter volume. This paper presents comprehensive analysis of the duty cycle control (DCC) for optimizing the performance of the 3p-DAB. Based on DCC, an optimized modulation strategy is proposed to minimize the conduction losses of the 3p-DAB in the whole load range. The proposed modulation strategy extends the soft-switching range of the 3p-DAB with large voltage variations simultaneously. It is established through loss analysis that the proposed modulation strategy boosts the efficiency of the 3p-DAB, especially at low loads. When the duty cycles change fast as a result of the abruptly changed transmission power, the transformer currents can become unbalanced, leading to the magnetic bias and oscillations in dc currents. This paper further proposes a fast transient current control (FTCC) method for the 3p-DAB with variable duty cycles. The FTCC enables the converter to transfer from one steady state to another within about one-third switching period, hence balancing the transformer currents rapidly and avoiding oscillations in dc currents. Power system protections are highly sensitive to decaying dc offset that could appear when a fault occurs. The consequences of this effect represent a challenge in the coordination of protection devices that have been widely studied. The elimination of the dc offset component of current transformers (CTs) measurements is the objective of this paper, including a new autonomous detector based on mathematical morphology. The idea enhances the digital signal processing to prepare the information before the protective device takes a decision. The detection and fast elimination of the decaying dc offset on current signals could improve the speed of protection, coordination, and selectivity. The paper presents the proposed algorithm and assesses the solution using alternative transient program. The model of the CT used for this validation is also presented. High-voltage direct-current (HVDC) transmission systems have been rapidly developing, whereas they also become the crucial factors that affect the power system's stability. The repetitive commutation failures (RCF) of the HVDC link will put the sending-end power system at risk of transient instability, which greatly raises the demand of the system to enhance its ability to cope with such events. This paper proposes a flexible control strategy supported by the fast-acting energy storage system (ESS) based on the combination of the model predictive control (MPC) principle and the extended equal area criterion (EEAC) to ensure transient stability of the sending-end system when RCF occurs in a single HVDC link. The formulas to forecast the system's dynamic behavior are constructed. The optimal power expected to be provided by the ESS for each commutation failure (CF) is obtained by assessing the system stability margin. The proposed strategy is to maintain the system's transient stability by the consecutive appropriate responses of the ESS during RCF. Additionally, the blocking conditions of the HVDC link and the required consequent control are studied. This paper investigates the effect of mode transition from low-frequency transverse electromagnetic (earth-return wave) to high-frequency Sommerfeld–Goubau (surface wave) propagation on switching surges in gas-insulated buses (overhead cables) by adopting complete formulas for earth-return impedance and admittance using the extended transmission line (TL) approach. The lower attenuation of the surface wave shows a significant difference in the propagation functions evaluated by the classical TL approach with Carson/;Pollaczeck's impedance and space admittance. The lower attenuation in the high-frequency region leads to a spike-like voltage at the wavefront of a step response in time domain, and results in switching surges with frequency components higher than 10 MHz. This phenomenon explains the reason why measured transient voltages and currents in gas-insulated substations show frequency components ranging from some MHz to about 100 MHz, and the transient voltages and currents are sustained for more than a few microseconds. This phenomenon cannot be reproduced by the classical TL approach. This paper proposes a new coordinated method for preventive generation rescheduling and corrective load shedding to maintain power system transient stability under uncertain wind power variation. A two-step bi-level optimization model is proposed where generation rescheduling and load shedding are coordinated by a risk coordination parameter, which adjusts the total coordination cost in the upper level. Then, based on Extended Equal Area Criterion (EEAC) and trajectory sensitivities, the non-linear risk and stability constraints are converted into the linear form for generation rescheduling cost and load shedding cost optimization in the lower level, respectively. Uncertain wind power output is modeled as a small number of robust test scenarios. Finally, the golden section search is applied to solve the bi-level problem. The proposed method is validated on the New-England 39-bus system by using commercial grade software. This paper proposes a novel wide-area control strategy to enhance the transient stability of a large inter-connected power grid. The proposed control strategy achieves maximal damping of the inter-area oscillations by calculating the optimal number of cluster centers based on a novel online coherency grouping. To achieve this objective, the critical electro-mechanical mode is selected using localness index method during transient conditions. In addition, the online identification of the full model is performed to estimate the states to be controlled during the grid disturbances. Thereafter, a discrete linear quadratic regulator (DLQR) is directly applied to the estimated states, and the corresponding signals are channelized through the loop of most controllable and observable machines of each coherent group. The efficacy of the proposed method is tested on IEEE 39 bus and IEEE 68 bus standard benchmark model. The results demonstrate faster damping with minimal computation burden compared to existing solutions such as a classical slow coherency and a multi-input multi-output (MIMO) based wide area damping controllers. Although adaptive control has been explored for various aerospace applications, there exists an inherent tradeoff between the convergence of the tracking error and the robustness by using high-gain learning to improve the transient behavior and operation safety. This paper studies novel strategies to enhance the transient response of model reference adaptive control (MRAC) for nonlinear aircraft systems with unmatched dynamics. We first develop a new compensator containing the undesired transient residual error to modify the external command. This can tune the command signal to be tracked to reshape the closed-loop system dynamics, whilst the original tracking objective is retained. Moreover, to diminish the potential high-frequency oscillations induced by the high-gain learning in the adaptive law, we resort to an error feedback term in the reference model to accelerate the convergence of the tracking error. In this new MRAC framework, a higher learning gain could be used to improve the tracking error convergence without triggering oscillations. We prove the closed-loop system stability, analyze the enhanced transient performance and examplify the robustness of the proposed adaptive control system. This paper develops a hierarchical deep learning machine (HDLM) to efficiently achieve both quantitative and qualitative online transient stability prediction (TSP). For the sake of improving its online efficiency, multiple generators’ fault-on trajectories as well as the two closest data-points in pre-/post-fault stages are acquired by PMUs to form its raw inputs. An anti-noise graphical transient characterization technique is tactfully designed to transform multiplex trajectories into 2-D images, within which system-wide transients are concisely described. Then, following the divide-and-conquer philosophy, the HDLM trains a two-level convolutional neural network (CNN) based regression model. With stability margin regressions hierarchically refined, it manages to perform reliable and adaptive online TSP almost immediately after fault clearance. Test results on the IEEE 39-bus test system and the real-world Guangdong Power Grid in South China demonstrate the HDLM's superior performances on both stability status and stability margin predictions. Traditionally, increasing logical masking probability has been used to improve the circuit reliability against single-event transients (SETs). As the very first work, this paper presents a new approach to increase the reliability of digital circuits against soft errors caused by multiple event transients (METs) by taking advantages of circuit partitioning and local logical restructuring techniques. In the proposed approach, the circuit is partitioned into various subcircuits and, then, several structures of each subcircuits which satisfy the area constraints are extracted by using a graph-based procedure. In order to select the suitable alternative between various subcircuit structures, we introduce a novel metric named global failure probability in the presence of METs (GFPM). This parameter provides an evaluation of each subcircuits contribution in the soft error rate (SER) of the given circuit making it possible to estimate the impacts of changing the structure of the subcircuits on the circuit SER. Hence, it prevents from repeatedly calculating the SER of the circuit that is very time-consuming leading to significant improvements in the optimization runtime. Experimental studies on ISCAS benchmark circuits show that the proposed approach, on average, achieves 18.4% SER reduction with 11.9% area overhead and 8.2% delay overhead comparing to the original circuit while the global SET-based SER mitigation approach and the global MET-based SER mitigation approach achieve 8.46% and 21.8% SER reduction, respectively. A popular variable-frequency control used for point-of-load (POL) converter application is the constant on-time (COT) control. COT control is able to improve light-load efficiency and reduce the amount of output capacitors with high-bandwidth designs, but the transient response of COT control is limited by the fixed on-time nature of the control. In this paper, a state-trajectory-based control with single-cycle transient response is proposed for POL converters. With the proposed control, the converter will follow the natural state trajectory of the converter for the duration of the detected load step-up transient, which can ensure a very fast transient response. Experimental results are presented to not only demonstrate the proposed idea but also the control's ability to further reduce the amount of output capacitors and save board footprint.
