This paper investigates the Multilevel Current Source Converter (MCSC) STATCOM. It proposes a new method of modulation. The new modulation method produces less THD and di/dt at the terminals of the MCSC STATCOM when compared to the widely used Phase-Shifted Carrier SPWM (PSC-SPWM). To ensure the inductors' currents remain balanced, a Current Balancing Algorithm (CBA) is presented. The CBA does not require any controls. It relies on assigning optimum switching states to each CSC module in real-time. In addition, two control strategies are presented in this paper. The first one assumes the STATCOM to be a SISO. Therefore, it only requires one PI controller. However, the gains for the controller must be changed if the STATCOM was to transition from capacitive mode to inductive mode, or vice versa. The second control strategy overcomes this problem by implementing a TITO integral state feedback controller. The contributions of this paper are validated via simulation and experimental results. A new modulated carrier control (MCC) method is proposed in this paper for a power factor correction (PFC) boost converter, which provides high power factor (PF) and low total harmonic distortion (THD) in wide input voltage and load range. The proposed MCC method employs a zero current duration (ZCD) demodulator that detects ZCD in each switching cycle to estimate current conduction duration of the boost inductor. Using the estimated signal of the ZCD demodulator, the proposed controller generates a compensated duty signal with a PFC converter to properly operate in continuous conduction mode (CCM) or discontinuous conduction mode (DCM). Unlike the conventional MCC PFC converter where the line current is distorted in DCM resulting in poor PF and high THD, the proposed MCC method can provide higher PFC performance regardless of CCM and DCM while maintaining the simple control loop of conventional MCC control method that does not require inner current loop and using relatively small inductance. The pulse-width modulated (PWM) switching rectification that can achieve a high power factor (PF) for increasing the energy transfer efficiency between an LC resonator and a rectifier and voltage step-up and -down conversion is proposed for a wireless power transfer (WPT) receiver. The proposed method can emulate the switching rectifier as a resistive load by using an inductor and integrated phase synchronizers. Additionally, similar to a switched-inductor converter that controls the duty cycle ratio (D), the proposed PWM rectifier can control the output voltage VOUT when the input is a rectified, wirelessly coupled voltage instead of a constant voltage. Thus, unlike a conventional PWM switching rectifier for ac mains, an additional voltage conditioning circuit would not be needed after the proposed rectifier for WPT. The proposed PWM switching rectification is implemented in the AMS 0.18 μm 1.8 V/5 V CMOS process. PF = 1 is measured, indicating the most efficient energy transfer, compared to only 0.55–0.65 in a peak detection rectifier. Additionally, 88.2% of peak power conversion efficiency of the switching rectifier is achieved, and the maximum output power is 80.3 mW at 500 kHz of the WPT frequency. This paper presents a new approach to controlling and optimizing a single-stage boost-integrated full-bridge dc–dc converter for a stand-alone photovoltaic-battery-powered dc motor system by combining pulse-frequency modulation (PFM), pulsewidth modulation (PWM), and phase angle shift (PAS). Unlike most of the existing multiport dc–dc converters, which aim at regulating the output voltage (first- or second-quadrant operation), the dc motor load requires both voltage and current reversals (four-quadrant operation). The converter is able to perform three tasks simultaneously: maximum power point tracking (MPPT), battery charging/discharging, and driving the dc motor at variable speeds including bidirectional and stall motions. To achieve these control objectives, the boost inductor and the motor inductance operate in different modes such that PFM and PWM can be used to achieve MPPT and a wide motor voltage range, respectively. By properly adjusting the PAS of the duty cycles, the capacitor and battery rms current value can be reduced, while the operation of the converter remains unchanged, hence improving the conversion efficiency. There have been several advanced topologies proposed by the community for micro-inverter applications. However, many such applications suffer from unwanted second-order harmonic current ripple at dc input. Moreover, in the absence of suitable passive filter or ripple compensator, the second-order harmonics ripple may propagate into the dc source. This results in several problems to the system, related to system efficiency, life, cost, size, reliability, and stability. This paper proposes an adaptive sliding-mode controller to shape the output impedance of the boost-circuit of quasi-switched boost inverter such that the propagation of the ripple from dc link to the dc-input source is resisted. The quasi-switched boost inverter is one of the advanced and suitable topologies for the micro-inverter applications. The adaptive nature of the proposed controller improves the transient performance of the system at the line–load transients unlike some existing solutions, which affects dynamics adversely to achieve ripple mitigation objective. Photovoltaic (PV) systems containing a rechargeable battery as an energy buffer require multiple dc–dc converters for PV panel control and battery regulation, and hence, they are prone to be complex and costly. To simplify the system by reducing the number of converters, this paper proposes the nonisolated switched capacitor converter (SCC)-based multiport converter (SC-MPC) for standalone PV systems. The proposed SC-MPC can be derived by integrating a bidirectional pulsewidth modulation (PWM) converter, series-resonant converter (SRC), and an SCC with sharing switches. PWM and pulse frequency modulation (PFM) controls are employed for the PWM converter and SRC, respectively, to regulate either a battery voltage, output voltage, or input power from a PV panel, depending on power balance among the input, battery, and load. The 150-W prototype was built for an experimental verification, and the results demonstrated the output voltage could be regulated independently on the battery voltage or input port of PV panels. In this paper, a novel integrated interleaved dual-mode time-sharing inverter (IIDMI) is proposed for grid-tied transformerless photovoltaic (PV) applications. While the dual-mode time-sharing conversion technique ensures minimum losses, the IIDMI also retains the advantages of interleaved topologies, such as low total harmonic distortion of the ac current with reduced filtering requirements, increased power density, and reduced current and thermal stresses of power devices. The leakage current problem, which is a main concern with the transformerless PV inverters, is solved by increasing the frequency of the main side band of the common-mode voltage above the resonance frequency of the common-mode impedance, while avoiding high switching losses. The current control, especially at transitions between the buck and the boost modes of operation, is highly improved by utilizing a fast-response deadbeat control scheme. High step-down voltage conversion is necessary to bridge the voltage gap between main power converters and low-voltage auxiliary electronics in power conversion systems. Switched capacitor converters (SCCs) are an attractive candidate as a high step-down converter, but their poor voltage regulation capability may limit their applications. Pulsewidth modulation (PWM) SCCs with adjustable high step-down voltage conversion are proposed in this paper. The proposed PWM SCCs can be derived from traditional SCCs by replacing an energy transfer capacitor with a switched-capacitor-inductor (SCL) cell that comprises inductors, capacitors, and diodes to realize PWM-controllable voltage conversion. The voltage step-down ratio of the proposed PWM SCCs is not only PWM controllable but also adjustable with structures of SCCs and SCL cells. In this paper, a three-level quasi-switched boost T-type inverter (3L qSBT2I) is proposed. A new pulse-width modulated (PWM) control method is presented to reduce the inductor current ripple of the qSBT2 I. In the introduced PWM technique, the shoot-through duty cycle is maintained constant to keep the modulation index as high as possible. Then, the only control parameters of the qSBT2I are the duty cycles of the two additional switches. By controlling the duty cycles of the two additional switches, the voltage gain of the proposed qSBT2 I can be improved to a value larger than that of the conventional 3L impedance source inverters. The steady-state analysis, operating principles, and comparisons with the impedance source-based 3L inverters are presented. A 1-kW prototype is constructed to verify the operating principle of the 3L qSBT2I. This paper presents a single-inductor multiple-input single-output (SI-MISO) boost converter with a deadbeat-based control method. The proposed deadbeat-based control has the capability to simultaneously conduct the power regulation from multiple inputs and the output voltage regulation for the SI-MISO boost converter. The advantages of the proposed method are less component count, lower system cost, compatibility for arbitrary number of inputs, fast response, and simplicity for implementation. Hence, the SI-MISO boost converter is a promising interface for the regulation of multiple energy sources as a standalone power system, which can be utilized in electric vehicle applications. To verify the performance of the proposed deadbeat-based control method, a laboratorial prototype of the SI-MISO boost converter is built. The steady-state and dynamic operations are investigated based on the prototype. The experimental results demonstrate that input power and output voltage of the SI-MISO boost converter can be effectively regulated by the proposed control method. This paper investigates a multilevel inverter composed of series/parallel-connected H-bridges. The presented structure can be used for applications in which the use of semiconductor switches with low-voltage and low-current ratings is intended. A comprehensive system model, an overall control strategy to adjust the output voltage with constant magnitude and frequency, and a level-shifted PWM (LS-PWM) strategy based on a voltage vectors unidimensional analysis and a plane analysis are presented. The LS-PWM is capable of mitigating the low-frequency circulating current, thus generating multilevel voltage signals with low harmonic distortion, maximum number of levels, and low dv/dt. In addition, considering a wide range of values of voltages and currents and various power levels, the total converter losses are reduced compared with the conventional multilevel converters. Two multilevel conventional inverters with the same number of semiconductor switches are used for comparison. Simulation and experimental results demonstrate the feasibility of the studied converter. This paper investigates power shunt filter topologies composed of three standard three-leg converters applied in either three or four-wire system. Compared with the usual three-phase shunt filter, the proposed ones allow us to reduce dc-link voltages, harmonic distortion or/and the semiconductor losses, and fault tolerant operation. Suitable control strategies to adjust filter and circulating currents, as well as the three dc-link voltages are presented. Two pulse-width modulation techniques are developed for the proposed topologies in order to achieve the best voltage-pulse pattern. Comparisons between these techniques are carried out in this paper. Single-stage power-factor-corrected (S2PFC) power supplies usually suffer from high voltage stress, due to lack of control on the intermediate bus capacitor voltage. In the past, analysis of such voltage stress was mostly based on steady-state condition without providing sufficient explanation during the transient circuit operation. This paper revisits the problem at circuit level and reports that the root cause is due to the inherent negative current feedback property of the output inductor or the transformer operating in continuous conduction mode (CCM). Based on the finding, this paper further proposes a new approach to reducing the voltage stress by adding an auxiliary circuit branch to existing S2PFC converters. The additional circuit branch limits the effect of negative current feedback by suppressing the change of output current slope due to change of load. This assists the pulsewidth modulation controller to track the change of load better such that the bus capacitor voltage range is reduced through duty cycle control. The auxiliary circuit branch also reduces reverse-recovery-related losses of the converter under CCM operation. This paper suggests a cascade output voltage regulation strategy for dc/dc boost converters that embeds a robust inner-loop current controller against parameter variations. The contributions of this paper are divided into two parts. The first contribution is to present a simple and robust inner-loop current controller despite parameter uncertainties, guaranteeing the stability of the whole closed-loop system including the first-order internal dynamics. The second contribution is to show that an outer-loop proportional–integral regulator can stabilize the output voltage error without relying on any parameter information. Simulations and experiments using a 3-kW dc/dc boost converter showed that the proposed method offers satisfactory closed-loop performance in the presence of parameter uncertainties. Full-bridge (FB)-boost converter is suitable for applications with wide input voltage range and galvanic isolation requirement, and a two-mode phase-shift (PS)-two-edge modulation (TEM) control scheme based on two modulation signals and one carrier can be used to achieve automatic mode shifting and high efficiency. In order to reduce the influence of the input voltage disturbance on the output voltage, the small-signal model of FB-boost converter is built and the input voltage feed-forward (IVFF) functions under different operating modes are derived in this paper. In view of the small-signal and large-signal control laws of the derived IVFF functions, the two-mode PS-TEM control schemes with small-signal and large-signal IVFF compensations are proposed, respectively. Both of them can realize automatic selection of operating modes and the corresponding IVFF compensations, and thus high efficiency and improved input transient response can be guaranteed. Besides, the IVFF function in boost mode is simplified for easy implementation, and the comparisons among the two-mode PS-TEM control schemes with small-signal, large-signal, and without IVFF compensations are presented in this paper. Conventional zero-voltage and zero-current-switching (ZVZCS) full-bridge converters are widely used because they can realize zero-voltage switching (ZVS) for the leading leg and zero-current switching (ZCS) for the lagging leg. However, the large turn-off loss of the leading leg is still unacceptable in high-voltage high-power applications where insulated-gate bipolar transistors (IGBTs) with current tailing are employed. Hence, it is preferable to achieve ZCS for all IGBTs of full-bridge converters. This paper analyzes the ZCS conditions for pulsewidth modulated (PWM) full-bridge converters and proposes a general strategy for achieving ZCS for main switches, including the control strategy and design method of the topology. Based on this theory, a novel ZCS PWM full-bridge converter with simple auxiliary circuit is derived and tested. It can achieve ZCS not only for the main switches of full-bridge converter, but for the auxiliary switch as well, and obtain high efficiency. The operation principle of the proposed ZCS PWM full-bridge converter and the design procedure are presented. Cascaded multicell converter (CMC) is proved to be an effective solution for medium voltage drives. Three-phase diode bridge rectifiers are normally used in this converter, which do not have regeneration capability. Pulsewidth-modulated (PWM) rectifier-based power cells enable the drives with regeneration capability. However, due to their two-level voltage operation at the input side, an inductor is required for each cell to filter out the switching frequency components from the input current. In this paper, a new configuration with single-phase PWM rectifier-based power cell is proposed to achieve multilevel voltage operation at both the input and output sides of the converter. Therefore, the devices at the rectifier side are also operated at reduced switching frequency without using any filter inductor for each cell. In the proposed converter, simple modular transformers are used instead of a single large and complex transformer that is used in the conventional CMC. Further, input phase currents of the converter are controlled in the synchronously rotating d–q frame, which requires only two current sensors at the input side instead of individual current sensors for each cell. This paper extends the trans-Z-source concept to ac–ac power conversion and proposes a novel single-phase trans-Z-source ac–ac converter. The proposed converter retains the advantages of its existing Z-source/quasi-Z-source counterparts in which the output voltage can be boosted and in-phase with the input voltage or bucked/boosted and out-of-phase with the input voltage. Meanwhile, a coupled inductor is introduced into the proposed converter, and the turns ratio of the coupled inductor become another control variable beside the duty cycle to obtain extreme voltage gain. Importantly, the input voltage and output voltage share the same ground, and the input current could be continuous, which is a benefit for reducing input current harmonics. Most important of all, the safe-commutation strategy for the proposed converter is deep developed, and analytic expression between the switches state and loop circuit voltage/current condition is derived out. Hence, the current/voltage ripple can be avoided without a loss snubber circuit, which benefits a reduced cost and enhanced reliability. The performance analysis is discussed in consideration of parasitic resistance, and system parameter design is optimized based on theoretic calculation. This paper proposes a pulse width modulation plus phase-shift (PPS) control for nonisolated high gain soft-switching bidirectional dc–dc converter (HSBDC). The phase-shift angle is used to control the direction and amount of power flow of the bidirectional dc–dc converter, while the duty cycle is used to balance the voltage between two high voltage side (HVS) capacitors. The HSBDC with PPS control has the advantages of simple control structure and symmetrical switching patterns, ensured soft-switching in both forward and backward modes at all load under wide voltage range, and reduced voltage ratings of the HVS capacitors and switches. The operation principle of the HSBDC with PPS control is analyzed in detail. Based on the analysis the passive component is designed to achieve higher efficiency. The simple boost control (SBC) method is usually used to control the shoot-through state in a single-phase single-stage quasi-switched boost inverter (qSBI). This paper proposes a new pulse-width modulation (PWM) control scheme to improve the modulation index for the qSBI. The advantages of the proposed method for the qSBI over the conventional SBC method are as follows: 1) the modulation index is larger; 2) the voltage stress on the capacitor, diodes, and switches is reduced significantly; 3) the high-frequency peak-to-peak inductor current and capacitor voltage ripples are smaller; 4) the shoot-through current is lower; and 5) the efficiency is higher. The operating principles and circuit analysis for the proposed PWM control scheme are shown. To verify the performance of the proposed PWM control method, a 400W prototype was built with a 110 V/50 Hz output voltage. The experimental results matched those of the theoretical analysis. This paper introduces series work of common-mode (CM) voltage reduction for the paralleled inverters. The paralleled inverters’ phase-legs are connected through coupling inductors and the combined three-phase currents are provided to the load. Interleaving is an approach to reduce the CM voltage for the paralleled inverters but it cannot eliminate CM voltage. A novel pulse-width-modulation (PWM) method for paralleled inverters which can theoretically achieve zero CM voltage is developed. Considering the basic voltage vectors in each inverter, novel paralleled voltage vectors which have zero CM voltage are proposed to combine the reference voltage vector. The action time's distribution and voltage vectors’ sending sequence for each inverter are also introduced. The proposed PWM method can make sure the voltage of the two inverters are balanced in each switching cycle and limits the circulating current through small coupling inductors. Similar to interleaving space vector PWM, the proposed zero CM PWM also has the ability to reduce the output current ripple and electromagnetic interference (EMI). Simulation and experimental results are provided to show the advantage of paralleled inverters in CM voltage reduction and validate the proposed method has good performance to reduce CM current and CM EMI noise. The parallel three-phase grid-connected converters sharing dc and ac bus can increase the system power level effectively. However, the circulating current will occur inevitably. The existing studies primarily focus on dc, fundamental, and low-frequency circulating current. The high-frequency circulating current (HFCC) caused by asynchronous carriers is studied emphatically in this paper, which is based on the analysis of the change of circulating current in one control cycle. A novel method to suppress HFCC caused by asynchronous carriers of modules is proposed. In this method, the carrier period of slave module is adjustable and the carrier period of the master module is constant. When a large phase shift between modules occurs, an adjusting cycle is inserted to carrier of slave module to realize resynchronizing with master module. It is noted that there is no other commutation between the two modules (expect the dq current reference), such as the carrier information. To prevent partial-shading issues in photovoltaic (PV) systems, various kinds of voltage equalizers that virtually unify characteristics of shaded and unshaded modules have been proposed. Although PV string utilization can be dramatically improved, PV systems tend to be complex and costly because, in addition to the main converter for string control, voltage equalizers are separately necessary. This paper proposes the single-switch single-magnetic pulse width modulation (PWM) converter integrating the voltage equalizer using the series-resonant voltage multiplier (SRVM) for standalone PV systems. By utilizing a square wave voltage generated across a filter inductor in a PWM buck converter for driving the SRVM, the main PWM converter and voltage equalizer can be integrated into a single unit with reducing the total switch and magnetic component counts, achieving not only system-level but also circuit-level simplifications. The experimental test using the prototype for three PV modules connected in series was performed emulating a partial-shading condition. Paralleling power converters is a common practice in industries to enhance total power rating, reliability, and availability of the system. In case of fault occurring in systems with parallel converters, the faulty power converter can be isolated and the system can still be operated at reduced power level. In this paper, a grid-connected power converter consisting of two parallel H-bridge converters with low ground leakage current is considered. Two contingency configurations, that are also of low ground leakage current, are proposed to enhance the availability of the system. This is done by reconfiguring the power circuit to a single H-bridge in the case of failure in one of the bridges. The power converter is experimentally tested with the proposed configurations for experimental validation. Dynamic voltage restorer (DVR) technology has become a mature power quality product. In high-power applications, DVR using a multilevel converter is commonly used. However, DVR using a multilevel direct pulse width modulation (PWM) ac–ac converter has not been well studied. This paper presents a new DVR topology using a cascaded multilevel direct PWM ac–ac converter. In the proposed scheme, the unit cell of the multilevel converter consists of a single-phase PWM ac-ac converter using switching cell structure with coupled inductors. Therefore, the multilevel converter can be short- and open-circuited without damaging the switching devices. Neither lossy RC snubber nor a dedicated soft commutation strategy is required in the proposed DVR. This improves the reliability of the DVR system. The output voltage levels of the multilevel converter increase with the number of cascaded unit cells, and a high ac output voltage is obtained by using low-voltage-rating switching devices. Furthermore, a phase-shifted PWM technique is applied to significantly reduce the size of the output filter inductor. The positive output elementary superlift-Luo converter (POESLLC) is a type of dc/dc converter. This dc/dc converter has an attractive advantage of a high voltage transfer gain as compared with other conventional dc/dc converters. Because of the voltage and load variations and also switching operation, the dynamic and static performances of the POESLLC are nonlinear and time varying. In order to achieve an excellent performance, a nonlinear controller is required. In this paper, a robust and fast response controller for voltage regulation of a POESLLC is presented. A proportional integral and pulse width modulation sliding mode controller are combined to control a third-order POESLLC. The proposed controller can be applied in the continuous conduction mode. Some simulations and experimental results are presented to show the effectiveness of the developed controller in different operating conditions. Furthermore, it will be shown that the developed controller is successful in suppressing the steady-state error of the output voltage of the POESLLC as well as the number of reduction of sensors. This paper proposes a current-fed isolated bidirectional dc–dc converter (CF-IBDC) that has the advantages of wide input voltage range, low input current ripple, low conduction losses, and soft switching over the full operating range. Compared with conventional CF-IBDCs, the voltage spikes of the low-voltage (LV) side switches in the proposed converter can be eliminated without additional clamp circuits. The converter adopts the pulse width modulation plus hybrid phase-shift control scheme such that the bus voltage can match the output voltage by means of the transformer. Thus, the current stresses and conduction losses of the converter become lower. In addition, the practical zero voltage switching (ZVS) of the secondary-side switches can be realized by adjusting the phase-shift angle within the secondary side when in light load or no load condition. The operating principles and characteristics including the power transfer, root-mean-square (RMS) current, and soft switching are investigated in detail. A fixed-frequency pulse width modulation (PWM) controlled bidirectional current-fed series-resonant converter is proposed in this paper. The proposed bidirectional resonant converter is derived based on integration of a bidirectional boost/buck converter and a dual-active-bridge series-resonant converter. The most attractive feature of the proposed bidirectional resonant converter is that its voltage gain is only determined by the duty cycle of primary-side switches and has nothing to do with the transferred power. Therefore, the direction and amplitude of the transferred power can be easily regulated continuously and smoothly. In addition, with the help of an auxiliary inductor, zero voltage switching can be achieved for all the active switches on both primary and secondary sides within the entire operation range. Furthermore, the converter is suitable for wide voltage applications because its voltage gain can be regulated in a wide range. A nonisolated single-stage on-board charger for electric vehicles has been proposed to increase system efficiency and power density in previous works. However, its ability to achieve high efficiency is limited by variations in the electric utility and battery, especially during the step-down operation. This paper proposes an advanced control algorithm that improves system efficiency in the step-down mode by controlling each switch asymmetrically using a phase-shift control. The proposed algorithm consists of only one controller, which prevents transient states from causing variations in the controller. The algorithm decreases the magnitude and ripple of the inductor current, which improves the charging efficiency by approximately 4.1% over at the 3.7-kW full load that of the conventional algorithm in the step-down mode, and measured total harmonic distortion and power factor are 3.2% and 0.995, respectively. This paper presents a modular push–pull PWM converter (MPC) for a battery energy storage system, which is intended for grid connections to medium- or high-voltage power systems. The converter per phase consists of a center-tapped transformer and two arms based on a cascade connection of multiple bidirectional PWM chopper-cells with floating dc capacitors. This paper discusses the operating performance and control method of the MPC, focusing on voltage balancing of all the floating dc capacitors. Moreover, a comparison is made between the MPC and a modular multilevel converter (MMC), under an assumption that both are used as the same battery energy storage system. Primary-side controlled universal-line flyback converters have been widely used in low-power applications due to their simplicity, low standby power, and low cost. However, conventional OCP schemes normally cause too large a variation in output current when the input voltage varies. This paper proposes a self-compensating OCP circuit to achieve a high-precision constant current at different input voltages which can be used in flyback converters working in discontinues conduction mode. It consists of a CS S/H circuit and a dynamic OCP voltage reference circuit. Compared with conventional OCP circuits, it does not need an extra compensation circuit. To verify the feasibility and performance of the proposed circuit, an IC controller that uses the proposed OCP circuit has been designed and fabricated in 0.35 μm 5-V/40-V high-voltage CMOS technology. Experimental results show that the constant output current precision of the prototype is within ±1% when the input line voltage changes from 85 to 265 Vac. A two-switch semiquadratic fifth-order buck converter belonging to a minimum-phase family is proposed in this paper. The proposed converter exhibits better dynamic performance, steady-state voltage gain in between conventional buck and quadratic buck converter. In view of this characteristic, it gives more bucking than the traditional buck converter. A time-domain analysis is formulated to predict the converter's steady-state performance. Also, the equations for designing the energy storage elements are established. Salient performance features, voltage bucking and source current ripples, of the proposed converter are compared to other competing/reported buck topologies. Transfer functions are obtained through state-space models, and then these are used in the controller design studies. The converter stabilization characteristics are studied through simulations. In this paper, a single-phase buck–boost matrix converter is proposed which can both buck and boost the input voltage with step-changed frequency. It consists of only six unidirectional current flowing bidirectional voltage blocking switches, two input and output filter capacitors, and one inductor. It has following advantages over the existing single-phase matrix converters: 1) it can both buck and boost input voltage solving the limited voltage transfer ratio (only boost or buck) problem; 2) it also has enhanced reliability as it is immune from shoot-through problem of voltage source when all switches are turned-on simultaneously, and, therefore, it has no need of PWM dead times and RC snubbers or dedicated soft-commutation strategies to solve the commutation problem; 3) it can also use high-speed power MOSFETs as their body diodes never conduct, which eliminate their poor reverse recovery problem. The operation principle of the proposed converter is given, and switching strategies are developed to obtain various multiples and submultiples of input frequency. This paper presents a three-phase back-to-back transformerless inverter for online uninterruptible power supply applications. The inverter consists of a three-phase three-wire input rectifier stage and a three-phase four-wire output inverter stage with their ground wires tied together. Both of the two stages are with sinusoidal pulse width modulation based division-summation (D-∑) digital control. The input stage controls the power flow between utility grid and dc link, regulates the dc-link voltage, and fulfills power factor correction. While the output stage tracks three-phase ac reference voltages. The proposed control laws derived based on the D-∑ digital approach take into account the effects of dc-link voltage fluctuation, grid-voltage distortion, and inductance variation due to different current levels. Modular multilevel converter (MMC) is very popular in medium-voltage applications, such as high-voltage direct current transmission, static Var generator, and motor drives. The arm capacitor voltage of MMC is usually constant and the output voltage is adjusted by regulating the pulse width modulation (PWM) index for switches in previous studies. In this paper, a novel flexible capacitor voltage control strategy for MMC as motor drives was proposed, with which the arm capacitor voltage was controlled flexibly according to the motor speed, by regulating the dc component and ac component of the PWM reference signal, and unsymmetrical control was used for the control of the upper arm and the lower arm in MMC. With the proposed control strategy, the circuit efficiency and the precision of the output voltage of the converter could be improved when the motor speed was low, and di/dt and d v/dt of the motor windings could be decreased. This paper identifies the characteristics of a current source inverter operating in discontinuous conduction mode, and proposes a new multiobjective pulse-width modulation (PWM) method to mitigate voltage boosting and harmonic distortion effects. The method takes into account load impedance effects. This paper presents an average current mode buck dimmable light-emitting diode (LED) driver for large-scale single-string LED backlighting applications. The proposed integrated current control technique can provide exact current control signals by using an autozeroed integrator to enhance the accuracy of the average current of LEDs while driving a large number of LEDs. Adoption of discontinuous low-side current sensing leads to power loss reduction. Adoption of a fast-settling technique allows the LED driver to enter into the steady state within three switching cycles after the dimming signal is triggered. Implemented in a 0.35-μm HV CMOS process, the proposed LED driver achieves 1.7% LED current error and 98.16% peak efficiency over an input voltage range of 110 to 200 V while driving 30 to 50 LEDs. A family of isolated buck–boost dc/dc converter for wide input-voltage range is proposed in this paper, and the full-bridge (FB) boost converter, being one of the typical topologies, is analyzed. Due to the existence of the resonant inductor (including the leakage inductor), the FB-boost converter can only adopt the two-edge-modulation (TEM) scheme with the FB cell being leading-edge modulated and the boost cell being trailing-edge modulated to minimize the inductor current ripple over the input-voltage range, and a phase-shift-control-scheme-based TEM with the use of the market available controller IC such as UC3895 is proposed, which realizes phase-shifted control for the FB cell to achieve zero-voltage switching. In order to improve the reliability and efficiency of the FB-boost converter, a three-mode dual-frequency control scheme is proposed, in which the FB-boost converter operates in boost, FB-boost and FB modes in low, medium and high input voltage regions, respectively, and for which the expression of the inductor current ripple is derived in this paper. As the input voltage in the FB-boost mode is close to the output voltage, the inductor current ripple in this mode is much smaller than that in the other modes, and the switching frequency of the boost cell in this mode can be lowered to one-(2N+1)th of the preset switching frequency to reduce the switching loss, and hence, to improve the efficiency. A 250–500 V input, 360 V output, and 6 kW rated power prototype is fabricated to verify the effectiveness of the design and control method. This paper discusses the control and design of the 6.6-kV back-to-back (BTB) system combining bidirectional isolated dc/dc converters and modular multilevel cascade pulsewidth modulation (PWM) converters. The system consists of multiple converter cells connected in cascade per phase at both front ends. Each converter cell consists of a bidirectional isolated medium-frequency dc/dc converter and two voltage-source H-bridge (single-phase full-bridge) PWM converters. Extremely low-voltage steps bring a significant reduction in harmonics and electromagnetic interference emissions to the BTB system. This paper presents a single-phase power factor corrector based on a tapped-inductor buck–boost converter. This paper suggests simplified models of the power stage under current-mode control and derives small-signal transfer functions of both the current and voltage control loops. Design rules for implementation of the proposed power factor corrector (PFC) are also suggested. The proposed PFC features low dc bus voltage, arbitrary lower than the peak line voltage. The proposed PFC is suitable for applications in computers and communications, where dc isolation can be provided by the downstream dc/dc converters. Semiactive quadrupler rectifiers (SAQRs) are proposed in this paper to serve as the secondary rectification circuits, which make the secondary-side voltages to be controllable and help reduce current stress and conduction losses. An interleaved isolated boost converter is developed based on the proposed SAQRs. By utilizing the pulse-width modulation (PWM) plus phase-shift (PPS) control strategy, the primary- and secondary-side voltages are well matched to reduce the current values and circulating conduction losses. With the proposed SAQRs, the voltage gain is extended and the voltage stresses on power devices and passive components used in rectification circuits are reduced to the half of the high output voltage. Hence, the efficiency is improved by using a transformer with a smaller turns ratio and reduced parasitic parameters, and by employing low-voltage rating devices with better switching and conduction performance. With optimal design, lower voltage, and current stresses on the primary-side switches, minimized input current ripple can be realized. Moreover, the zero-voltage turn on switching of the active switches and the zero-current turn off switching of the diodes can be achieved over a wide load and voltage range by the proposed SAQR-based converter and the control strategy. Meanwhile, the higher voltage gain, the lower voltage, and the current stresses on power devices can be obtained with the proposed SAQR-based converter compared with passive quadrupler rectifier-based converter. In a single-phase grid-connected nanogrid system, a bidirectional ac–dc converter is usually required to transfer energy between the ac grid and a dc bus. Active ac power balancing is often implemented to prevent the ac grid ripple power from injecting into the dc bus. A four-phase-leg sinusoidal pulsewidth-modulation (SPWM) converter can readily provide power factor correction and active ac power balancing. In this paper, the use of three-phase-leg SPWM converters for achieving these functions is analyzed. A family of bidirectional single-phase ac–dc three-phase-leg SPWM converters with an ac storage capacitor for use in a nanogrid system is designed with a general control structure and a modulation scheme for minimizing the ac storage capacitance. The general control structure is designed to achieve a decoupled system of a power-factor-correction converter cascaded with an active ac power load at the dc bus. The decoupled system is developed based on decomposition to differential-mode and common-mode voltages. The modulation method involves an extra zero-sequence voltage injection derived from the three-phase-leg SPWM voltages without introducing higher order harmonic distortions. A significant reduction of the ac storage capacitance and an improvement of converter efficiency are achieved. The design and analysis are verified by simulations and experimental measurements. This paper proposed a modulation scheme for the dual-active-bridge (DAB) converter to reduce rms current in wide-range operating conditions. The operating principle of the proposed fundamental duty modulation (FDM) is formulated based on the fundamental component analysis of the DAB converter. By modulating the PWM signals in the fundamental component domain, the optimal operation is implemented with a simple controller structure not requiring an operating mode classification, offline calculation, or current information. Operating characteristics including rms current level and ZVS characteristics are analyzed to compare loss breakdowns of the proposed scheme to those of recent related works. The proposed FDM achieves high efficiency under wide operation conditions due to reduced conduction level and wide ZVS range. Experimental results are obtained under various voltage gain and load conditions to confirm the operation of the proposed modulation scheme. Conventional three-phase rectifiers are controlled to achieve good power factor and low total harmonic distortion in the input. In the case of pulsating power loads, the fast dynamic response implies that the load pulses are reflected in the generator. These pulsating loads affect the lifetime operation of the generator, especially when it is not oversized (as in the case of aircraft applications). In order to smooth the power demanded from the generator, it is preferable to reduce the bandwidth of the output voltage controller for the rectifier but it affects its stability due to the fact that the right-half-plane (RHP) pole given by the negative impedance of a constant power load requires high-bandwidth control loop to compensate it. In this paper, an energy control method is proposed that utilizes the energy stored in the output capacitor of the rectifier to control the output voltage of the rectifier. In such a way, the minimum bandwidth restriction imposed by the RHP pole of the power load is eliminated and the bandwidth of the voltage loop can be defined low enough to demand smooth power from the generator. It is known that the ripple-based control of a switching dc–dc converter benefits from a faster transient response than a conventional pulse width modulation (PWM) control switching dc–dc converter. However, ripple-based control switching dc–dc converters may suffer from fast-scale oscillation. In order to achieve fast transient response and ensure the stable operation of a switching dc–dc converter over a wide load range, based on a conventional pulse train (PT) control technique, a peak capacitor current PT (PCC-PT) control technique is proposed in this paper. With a buck converter as an example, the operating modes, steady-state performance, and transient respond performance of a PCC-PT controlled buck converter are presented and assessed. To eliminate fast-scale oscillation, circuit and control parameter design considerations are given. An accurate discrete iteration model of a PCC-PT controlled buck converter is established, based on which the effects of circuit parameters on the stability of the converter operating in a discontinuous current mode (DCM), mixed DCM-continuous conduction mode (CCM), and CCM are studied. Carrier-based pulsewidth-modulation (CBPWM) techniques are popular due to their simplicity, and have been widely researched for various three-phase inverter configurations. In this paper, two CBPWM techniques are proposed to reduce the common-mode (CM) voltage generated by the five-phase inverter. The five-phase inverters have more flexibility in reducing the CM voltage than their three-phase counterparts because they have more phase legs, hence finer control over the star-point voltage of the load. Two methods are proposed for the conventional two-level five-phase inverter to reduce the CM voltage; one utilizing adjacent modulating waveforms and the other utilizing nonadjacent modulating waveforms. The coupled inductor inverter (CII) uses coupled inductors to generate multilevel outputs. As the volt-second balance must be maintained across each coupled inductor, direct application of the proposed methods on the CII inverter will result in overcurrents in the coupled inductors. Hence, the proposed methods are further improved to ensure the volt-second integral over each switching period is zero. Moreover, the two proposed methods are designed to reduce switching events and prevent unexpected states occurring during the switching transitions. A monolithic high-performance step-down dc–dc converter for high power point-of-load application is presented in this paper. A novel adaptive quadratic slope compensation method and an adaptive antijittering ramp scheme are proposed to enhance the performance of widely used peak current-mode control. A fast overcurrent detection method together with a robust driver control logic design has been introduced to increase the circuits' reliability. The dc–dc converter has been designed and fabricated in a 0.35-μm Bipolar-CMOS-DMOS process with an area of 6 mm2. With the proposed enhanced current-mode control, our design allows more flexibility on inductor selection, switching frequency, and output voltage. Experimental results have shown great adaptability for various application configurations. This converter has also shown fast line step response and low PWM jittering. It can operate at beyond 9-A peak current and up to 1.4-MHz switching frequency with supply voltage from 2.35 to 6 V. This paper presents a single-phase ac–ac converter based on a modular multilevel cascade converter (MMCC) with double-star chopper cells (DSCC). The converter topology is composed of three DSCC legs, in which the middle leg is shared, and it does not present a common dc-link capacitor. It is suitable for nonregenerative or regenerative low-power and medium-power ac–ac conversions. A voltage-balancing control is presented for regulating the floating dc capacitor voltages. Furthermore, a grid current and load voltage control is presented to correct the input power factor and to ensure input/output sinusoidal waveforms. A phase-shifted carrier (PSC) pulsewidth modulation (PWM) commands submodules (SMs) using half of PSCs, preserving the characteristics of conventional modulation.
