Radio frequency identification (RFID) systems for the paper industry is an emerging research topic due to the need for an automated identification system for the paper industry which would carry on the identification codes of paper and board reels throughout their life cycle. This paper discusses the application of passive ultra-high frequency (UHF) RFID systems to the paper industry. Challenges, benefits, and the application environment of using passive UHF RFID systems in the paper industry are presented and discussed. The major challenges are development of globally operable tag antenna designs and integration of reader units and reader antennas to paper handling machinery. To confront and solve these challenges, this paper presents novel tag antenna designs for paper and board reel identification and proposes solutions for reader and reader antenna integration to paper handling machinery. In addition, the identification locations within the paper reel supply chain and the effects of RFID systems to supply chain visibility are presented and discussed. In addition, test results of using passive UHF RFID systems in the paper industry environment are presented. Note to Practitioners--An automated identification system, which would carry on the identification code of a specified paper or board reel throughout its life cycle, is needed in the paper industry. Nowadays when barcode identification systems are used the identity of the reels disappear when the wrapping of the reel and at the same time the barcode are removed. The RFID tag, however, would be attached to the paper reel core and thereby the identification code of the reel is restored throughout its life cycle. RFID systems would benefit the paper industry by enhancing the supply chain visibility and providing a more automated identification system than barcode identification. In the future, paper reels will be identified with clamp truck-integrated reader units which, on the other hand, enables adding more real-time information about the locations of the paper reels to information databases but also sets challenges for paper reel tag performance and integration of RFID reader units and reader antennas to paper handling machinery. Many papers have been written about the phenomenon of arc flash, the causes of arc flash, how to mitigate specific arc flash problems, and how to design arc flash issues out from the beginning. This paper will discuss the overall process of completing an engineering incident energy analysis and remediation project in a pulp and paper mill. Most mills are not fortunate enough to receive sufficient funding to do the whole study and a remediation process all at once. This paper explores how a Midwestern pulp and paper mill worked over several years to get through the process of the study, remediation efforts, and the establishment of an overall electrical safety program. In this paper, the influence of partial discharges (PD) on the subsequent dielectric properties of oil-impregnated paper (OIP) is investigated. Dielectric frequency response (DFR) of OIP is investigated at varied levels of moisture, thermal aging, temperature, oil conductivity and electrode material, to allow comparison of these influences. It is shown that PD activity inside OIP can significantly change the real and imaginary parts of permittivity of the paper layers, especially in the frequency range below 100 Hz. It is shown that even if the PD activity is concentrated on a few percent of the test sample, the real part of permittivity measured on the entire sample after a few tens of hours of PD activity can increase up to 10 times at very low frequencies (∼ 1 mHz) and the imaginary part of the permittivity can increase up to 100 times at low frequencies (∼ 1 Hz). The change of the real and imaginary parts of permittivity due to PD activity is permanent. It is very similar to the change caused by thermal aging, and somewhat similar to the change caused by moisture and higher oil conductivity. It is also shown that the dissipation factor of OIP in contact with copper and brass increases, even in the absence of PD, but contact with aluminum and stainless steel has no influence on DFR of OIP. The results suggest that the influence of PD can be significant when estimating the moisture content or the level of thermal aging of OIP with DFR method. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

This paper presents an experimental work investigating the failure data of oil-impregnated paper under pulsating DC voltage. The failure data of the oil-impregnated paper specimens were obtained through constant voltage stress tests; the Weibull distribution was used to estimate the statistical distribution of failure data. The exponential function (EF) and the inverse power function (IPF) were used to modify the Weibull distribution of failure data, so as to obtain two dual-variable Weibull failure distributions (WFDs), which were used to analyze failure data of oil-paper specimens obtained under pulsating DC and individual DC and AC voltages. Their adequacies were evaluated by using failure data obtained through the constant stress tests under various voltages. Both EF-modified and IPF-modified WFDs show more adequacy for failure data of oil-paper insulation under DC and pulsating DC voltages than AC voltages. The oil-paper insulation of valve-side windings in a high voltage direct current (HVDC) converter transformer is subjected to both complicated voltage and severe thermal stresses. Partial discharge (PD) occurring in oil-paper bounded cavities is influenced by voltage stress type as well as temperature. This paper presents PD behaviors in an oil-paper bounded gas cavity under pulsating DC voltages. The voltage across the gas cavity and PD inception voltages at different test conditions are analyzed. Influences of temperature on statistical PD distributions and parameters are also presented. A numerical model is used to interpret PD behaviors under pulsating DC voltages and various temperatures. Experimental results and theoretical statements show that the temperature exhibits a great influence on the behaviors of cavity discharge under pulsating DC voltages. The oil-paper insulation in a transformer gradually ages due to the combined effects of thermal and electrical stress that occur during its operation. In this paper, for investigating the changes that occur within the oil-paper during the aging process with different aging stresses, partial discharge (PD) characteristics and trap parameters are measured. An internal discharge cavity model is designed for the electrical stress, and the thermal stress is generated by a baking oven simultaneously. The experiments are designed such that the dominant factor on the aging process is either thermal, electrical, or a unity of both stress factors. The phase resolved partial discharge (PRPD) spectrograms are recorded at different aging time, and the trap parameters are extracted by thermally stimulated depolarization current (TSDC) method. Additionally, the surface morphologies of these samples are observed by using a scanning electron microscope (SEM). The results show that the trap energy presents a decreasing tendency when the electrical stress plays the dominant role, and the discharge energy becomes larger over the aging time until pre-breakdown. When the thermal stress dominates the aging process, the trap energy shows an increasing tendency over the aging time, and there exists a process of ‘material conditioning’ that occurs at the initial stage of the aging process. The change of trap parameters in aged oil-paper will further affect PD characteristics. Video halftoning is a key technology for use in electronic paper (e-paper) or smart paper, which is an emerging display device that has received considerable attention recently. In this paper, a temporal frequency of flickering-distortion optimized video halftoning method is proposed. We first uncover three visual defects that conventional neighboring frame referencing-based video halftoning methods, due to their sequential changes of reference frames, will encounter. To deal with the problem, we then propose a reference frame update per GOP-based error diffusion video halftoning method based on a flickering sensitivity-based human visual model. To efficiently compromise between average temporal frequency of flickering (ATFoF) and visual quality, temporal frequency of flickering-distortion (TFoFD) is presented as a metric for video halftoning performance evaluation. Based on the proposed probability model of video halftoning, the TFoFD curve can be accurately estimated to optimize the tradeoff between quality and ATFoF before the video is halftoned. Our temporal frequency of flickering-distortion optimization strategy can also be applied to other video halftoning schemes for performance improvement. The applicability of using 2-furfural (2-FAL) and methanol as aging markers for synthetic ester impregnated paper insulation was investigated through laboratory aging experiments at temperatures of 80, 100 and 120 ?C. Methanol in the synthetic ester increased linearly with paper aging until degree of polymerisation (DP) reached 400. During this period concentration of methanol in oil was higher than that of 2-FAL, which proved the concept of using methanol to indicate early paper aging in the synthetic ester. However, the rate of methanol increase against the reduction of DP in the synthetic ester was about three times higher than that seen in mineral oil. This is due to a difference in the partitioning of the marker between oil and paper. Since the synthetic ester is more polar than the mineral oil, it attracted more methanol molecules from the paper, resulting in a higher concentration of methanol in oil for the same reduction of DP. In addition, a reduction in methanol was observed at the later stage of paper aging at 120 ?C. This could be due to either a change in the partitioning between oil and paper, or an esterification reaction which consumes methanol in the system. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

This article presents a comparative study of two types of transformer solid insulation: standard Kraft and thermally upgraded Kraft papers. The paper samples were impregnated with two different fluids, namely a synthetic dielectric ester fluid, Midel 7131, and a synthesized mineral oil, Luminol Tri. The impregnated papers were submitted to, accelerated aging at 150°C, temperature higher than the temperatures found inside transformers, for extended periods. The results show that for the first hours of aging, the cellulose depolymerization was similar for all the four studied cases. At a specific point, the paper samples aged in the ester fluid exhibited a lower depolymerization exceeding the 8000 hours of aging without reaching the levelling-off degree of polymerization (LODP). A similar trend was observed through the decrease of mechanical properties of papers in the ester-based oil. However, the difference in performance of both fluids was amplified due to the temperature used; at lower temperatures the difference should be smaller. Additionally, a relationship between the degree of polymerization and the mechanical properties accessed by the tensile testing was obtained regardless of the type of paper or oil. The total acidity in the ester fluid was higher than in mineral oil. Methanol, a chemical marker that is closely linked to the rupture of 1,4-ß-glycosidic bonds of cellulose, showed a partial sensitivity to the cellulose aging in the ester fluid. Furan (C4H4O) content was monitored during the aging and its concentration was found to be sensitive to the depolymerization along with the decrease in the mechanical properties of cellulose papers regardless of the type of paper. More importantly, its concentration was found to be dependent on the type of oil. More investigations are needed to further confirm the importance of furan as an indirect indicator of the mechanical performance along with its correlation with the depolymerization of paper aged in ester fluids. Thermal and electrical degradation properties in low-viscosity (20 mm2/s, (20 cSt) at 25 °C) silicone liquid and insulation paper were investigated to improve reliability and to enable preventive maintenance technology in transformers. Heat-accelerated degradation in samples of 20 cSt silicone liquid and insulation paper in sealed glass tubes with copper, silicon steel, and pressboard was examined to replicate the environment of the transformer tank. After the examinations, the tensile strength of the paper was measured, and the quantity of decomposition compounds was also measured. It was concluded that diagnosing faults by analyzing decomposition compounds with silicone liquid should be possible in the same way that it is with conventional mineral oil. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The traction transformer of a high-speed railway is long-term subjected to the effects of impulse traction loads, such that the aging status of a multilayer insulation paper between high and low voltage windings is non-uniformly distributed due to the non?uniform distribution of temperature. To enhance the use of the frequency domain dielectric spectroscopy (FDS) method in engineering, this paper studies the effects of non-uniform thermal aging on the frequency domain dielectric spectrum of multilayer insulation paper. Based on the experimental designs and preparation of experimental materials, the frequency domain dielectric spectrum of a multilayer insulation paper with uniform and non-uniform thermal aging distribution was tested. Afterwards, the effects of non-uniform thermal aging on the frequency domain dielectric spectrum of multilayer insulation paper were discussed and analyzed based on the tested results. The results show that: 1) The effects of the non-uniform distribution of DP (cellulose structure) can be ignored. The non-uniform distribution of the aging byproducts (except moisture) has limited effects on the tested results, which is far less than the effects of moisture. The non-uniform distribution of moisture is the dominant factor and affects the results. 2) In terms of insulation paper with a defined aging status, its order in the multilayer insulation paper does not affect the tested results. 3) The tested results of the insulation samples with a non-uniform aging distribution can no longer reflect the moisture content of the wettest section, and the evaluated moisture content is slightly higher than the average moisture content of the multilayer insulation paper. In this paper, the nature of thermally upgraded Kraft electrical insulating papers and their characterization by measurement of nitrogen content is discussed. A historical context and explanation of the basics of the various chemical methods used to measure nitrogen content in electrical papers is presented. The Kjeldahl and Dumas methods for quantifying nitrogen content were compared using six insulating papers in different laboratories in an effort to correlate the results obtained with both techniques. The results provide an insight into the viability of the Dumas combustion method as a proposed industry standard test for measuring the nitrogen content of paper. Moreover, data on the accuracy, reproducibility, and repeatability of the Dumas method is provided for the analysis of thermally upgraded electrical papers. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

The effect of elevated temperatures induced by over currents on the performance of paper oil insulation of transformer is investigated. This study has been carried out in presence of spiked concentrations of Dibenzyl disulphide (DBDS) in mineral oil for understanding its effects on copper sulphide formation. The dielectric response of paper oil insulation when subjected to elevated temperatures is studied using frequency domain spectroscopy and measurement of polarization and depolarization current. It is observed that there are significant variations in tan ? (dissipation factor) and magnitudes of polarization and depolarization currents of paper oil insulation due to high temperatures. A characteristic peak of tan ? around 0.1 Hz in the FDS response is observed to indicate the presence of copper sulphide on paper. A FEM based thermal model is proposed to explain the distribution of thermal conductivity and temperature gradient in paper oil insulation due to copper sulphide deposits. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

It is crucial for the successful application of high-temperature superconducting (HTS) power transformers that they are able to survive under abnormal operations, such as a short-circuit fault. Modeling, based on the design of a four-winding three-phase HTS power transformer, suggests severe boiling will occur on the surface of the winding during a short-circuit fault and will jeopardize the turn-to-turn insulation of the HTS power transformer. In this paper, a turn-to-turn insulation breakdown experiment platform involving the introduction of boiling on the surface of electrode has been built. Nomex 410 paper, one of the candidates for turn-to-turn insulation in the design of the HTS power transformer, was tested. The characteristics of dielectric strength of Nomex 410 in three different thicknesses (0.13, 0.18, and 0.25 mm) have been investigated, without boiling, as well as under different boiling situations, in an open bath of liquid nitrogen. The voltage application methods applied during both experiments test the electrical breakdown of Nomex 410 under a dynamic situation. The experiment results show that when under film boiling, compared to the test results for nucleate boiling, the dielectric strength of Nomex 410 paper decreases by approximately 38% of the value when no boiling is involved. Moreover, it is verified that the presence of an electric field accelerates the heat transfer between the liquid nitrogen and the heated electrode. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

Gassing problems and premature insulation failures in wind turbine transformers indicate reliability concerns about the insulation of such components. This fact necessitates investigating degradation of transformer insulation systems under high-dV/dt pulse voltages that exist in today's wind energy plants. For this purpose, PD activity, generally assumed to be the main long-term cause of insulation deterioration, needs to be analyzed. This work evaluates the effects of impulse voltage parameters such as rate of rise and repetition frequency on inception voltage and intensity of PD activities. PD parameter measurement under high-dV/dt voltages is challenging due to interferences from fast oscillations, and difficulties of PD energy measurements. To avoid such issues, which are related to electromagnetic detection methods under pulse energization, this work uses a chemical approach to compare PD activities, based on the rate of hydrogen generation in a controlled test chamber with oil/paper samples. Gas monitoring of the oil containing impregnated paper samples reveals that a faster rate of rise increases PD energy as well as inception voltage. Results based on experiments conducted in small oil chambers show good correlation between the amount of hydrogen detected and PD energy level; hence it can be used as a benchmark for comparing PD energy levels under various impulse waveforms. Bubbling phenomenon usually arises from overheated cellulose insulation in oil, which is known for deleterious effects on the insulation strength of oil-immersed transformers. In this paper, the experiment was conducted on a self-heating conductor wrapped with insulation paper. The inception temperature of bubbling phenomenon negatively correlates to the rising rate of temperature and moisture content of paper, which is in accordance with the results of previous research. Besides, bubbles formed under different conditions could be different in morphology and locations. Thereafter, a method for temperature rise was proposed, based on which the models were heated for component research. It is found that the component changes in oil and blanket gas are significant in a short time interval under bubbling conditions. Comparison trials were then conducted on naked conductors and paper-wrapped conductors. Based on the theory of mass transport, it is revealed that the water vapor and carbon oxides contribute a major part in bubble composition, and their proportions vary with the bubbling temperature. This study concludes that bubbling phenomenon at temperature below 120 ?C can be recognized as the vaporization of moisture in paper. Moreover, bubbles formed at temperatures around 160 ?C can be attributed to the combined effect of water vaporization and gases from cellulose degradation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper studies the secure transmission in a multiuser broadcast channel where only the statistical channel state information of the eavesdropper is available. We propose to apply secret dirty-paper coding (S-DPC) in this scenario to support the secure transmission of one user and the normal (unclassified) transmission of the other users. By adopting the S-DPC and encoding the secret message in the first place, all the information-bearing signals of the normal transmission are treated as noise by potential eavesdroppers and thus provide secrecy for the secure transmission. In this way, the proposed approach exploits the intrinsic secrecy of multiuser broadcasting and can serve as an energy-efficient alternative to the traditional artificial noise (AN) scheme. To evaluate the secrecy performance of this approach and compare it with the AN scheme, we propose two S-DPC-based secure transmission schemes for maximizing the secrecy rate under constraints on the secrecy outage probability (SOP) and the normal transmission rates. The first scheme directly optimizes the covariance matrices of the transmit signals, and a novel approximation of the intractable SOP constraint is derived to facilitate the optimization. The second scheme combines zero-forcing dirty-paper coding and AN, and the optimization involves only power allocation. We establish efficient numerical algorithms to solve the optimization problems for both schemes. Theoretical and simulation results confirm that, in addition to supporting the normal transmission, the achievable secrecy rates of the proposed schemes can be close to that of the traditional AN scheme, which supports only the secure transmission of one user. Recycled paper is extensively used worldwide. In the last decades, its market has expanded considerably. The increasing use of recycled paper in papermaking has led to the production of paper containing several types of impurities. Consequently, wastepaper mills are forced to implement quality control schemes for evaluating the incoming wastepaper stock, thus guarantying the specifications of the final product. The main objective of this work is to present a fast and reliable system for identifying different paper types. Therefore, undesirable paper types can be refused, improving the performance of the paper machine and the final quality of the paper manufactured. For this purpose, two fast techniques, i.e., Fourier transform midinfrared (FTIR) and reflectance near infrared (NIR), were applied to acquire the infrared spectra of the paper samples. Next, four processing multivariate methods, i.e., principal component analysis, canonical variate analysis (CVA), extended CVA (ECVA), and support vector machines (SVMs), were employed in the feature-extraction or dimension-reduction stage. Afterward, the k nearest neighbor (kNN) algorithm was used in the classification phase. Experimental results show the usefulness of the proposed methodology and the potential of both FTIR and NIR spectroscopic methods. Using the FTIR spectrum in association with SVM and kNN, the system achieved a maximum classification accuracy of 100%, whereas using the NIR spectrum in association with ECVA or SVM and kNN, the system achieved a maximum classification accuracy of 96.4%. This paper presents a digital gyroscope interface system for high-frequency bulk-acoustic-wave (BAW) gyroscopes with in-run automatic mode-matching (AMM) capability. The presented work demonstrates the design and implementation of the dual-mode (DM) operation architecture on a flexible digital platform, which allows for low-cost rapid development and evaluation of new functions and architectures. Two prototype silicon BAW gyroscopes are tested on this platform using the proposed system to verify the advantages of the DM architecture. The AMM in DM showed below 4-ppb mode split accuracy and fast converge time without overshoot or oscillation. The DM operation with in-run AMM substantially reduced the bias drift of the gyros, leading to significantly lower rate random walk (RRW) compared to conventional single-mode (SM) operation. The performance repeatability and stability over the temperature of the DM gyro system are characterized, showing as high as $50\times $ improvement compared to the SM architecture. Surface discharge behavior of modified oil-impregnated paper (OIP) with nanoparticles (NPs), has been investigated under AC voltage with superimposed impulses. Surface Partial Discharges (PD) can develop at an oil-paper interface and lead to its degradation. Modified paper, made from fibers with adsorbed nanoparticles, can affect the partial discharge behavior of a paper in combination with oil at the interface between oil and fibers. Papers with two different concentrations (2 wt% and 6 wt%) of silica (SiO2), and paper with silanized zinc oxide (ZnO) nanoparticles (1 wt%) have been studied. Papers with SiO2 NPs showed lower impulse-induced surface PD activity. However, thorough purification during the production of SiO2 filled papers was necessary to achieve a good performance. With less purification, paper with 2 wt% of SiO2 did not show such significant improvements. Paper with 6 wt% of SiO2 NPs showed a large number of AC surface PDs, but low influence of impulse voltage on subsequent PD. Papers containing 1 wt% of silanized ZnO showed reduced relative permittivity, but no significant difference in surface PD behavior. The effect of high lignin content in Kraft paper has also been studied. Paper with higher lignin content showed better surface PD characteristics under the impulse. Paper with low concentrations of pure SiO2 NPs, and paper with high lignin content thus appear good candidates for further studies to improve the surface PD behavior of OIP. The HVDC dry-type bushing, with its main insulating medium being epoxyimpregnated- paper composite, is a key device in the ultra-high voltage direct current power transmission system. The HVDC bushing is under the combined effect of electricity, heat, and mechanical stress when it is in operation, in which case the electric field strength in the core of bushing is high, the temperature in the central conductor is high, and the interfacial effect between the epoxy layer and insulating paper is strong. Consequently, space charge will accumulate in the epoxy-paper composite insulation. Previous studies mainly focuses on the characteristics of space charge distribution in polymer-micro-nano filler, whereas the studies on that in epoxy-insulating-paper composite are quite limited. This paper, based on the HVDC bushing made up of epoxy-insulating-paper composite, establishes and a space charge measuring system which is suitable for the pulse electro-acoustic (PEA) method at high temperature (⩽110 °C). A modified PEA method which is applicable to the measurement of space charge in the multi-dielectric-layer composite with different acoustic impedance is put forward. By controlling the thicknesses of dielectric layers in the composite sample, the effect of sound wave reflection on the measuring system can be eliminated. Dielectric response testing is a non-destructive insulation testing method that is widely used for assessing insulation properties. Time-and frequency-domain dielectric spectra are closely dependent on insulation conditions. In comparison with the time-domain spectrum, the frequency-domain dielectric response under sweep sinusoidal excitation has a stronger anti-interference capability and a more comprehensive insulation information. However, the wide application of the measurement using the frequency-domain dielectric response under sweep sinusoidal excitation is hindered by its long testing time. A possible solution is obtaining the frequency-domain spectrum by transforming the tested time-domain spectrum, such that the time- and frequency-domain spectra can be obtained in one measurement. Polarization depolarizing current measurement under DC excitation is a common time-domain testing method for time-frequency-domain conversion. However, such conversion is valid only at extremely low frequencies (less than 0.05 Hz), indicating a slight overlap with the frequency range of the measurement using the frequency-domain dielectric response under sweep sinusoidal excitation. Moreover, the effective conversion frequency range cannot be controlled manually, and the measurement using time-domain dielectric response under DC excitation is hindered by the anti-interference capability due to micro polarization-depolarization current. In addition, scholars have found nonlinearity in a partial insulation system. As the bridge of the traditional time-frequency-domain conversion, a linear extended Debye model cannot accurately reflect insulation materials that exhibit nonlinear characteristics, thereby further limiting the application scope of time-frequency-domain conversion. This study introduces the system identification theory to demonstrate the problems existing in the traditional time-frequency-domain conversion and proposes an improved time-domain testing method based on the previous work. The improved method extends the effective frequency range of time-frequency-domain conversion and emphasizes the comprehensive analysis of the insulation by combining the measured time-domain spectrum and the frequency-domain spectrum conversed from time-domain data. Frequency domain spectroscopy is a non-invasive, offline test performed to estimate moisture content, conductivity and aging status of the composite oil-paper insulation of a transformer. In conventional frequency domain spectroscopy test, sinusoidal excitation voltage is applied on the insulation under test for two cycles starting from 0.1 mHz to 1 kHz. One important aspect of conventional dielectric response measurement is the choice of excitation voltage. The insulation in real life operation is often stressed by voltage waveforms, which are non-stationary in nature. Therefore, modification of excitation voltage waveform is required for reliable assessment of insulation condition. Another important factor is the measurement time. Conventional frequency sweep from 0.1 mHz to 1 kHz, makes frequency domain spectroscopy measurement inadvertently lengthy, hence development of new measuring technique is necessary to reduce measurement duration for diagnosis of insulation condition. Considering these two facts, this contribution reports the feasibility of conducting dielectric response measurement in frequency domain using chirp excitation voltage waveforms. Instead of applying sinusoidal excitation at discrete measurement frequencies, chirp signals (band limited from 0.1 mHz to 1 Hz) were used to conduct frequency domain spectroscopy measurement on three laboratory prepared test samples and on two transformers. The dielectric dissipation factors evaluated using chirp waveforms showed a very good agreement when compared to that obtained by using sinusoidal excitation. Besides, investigations also revealed that the proposed method offered least amount of measurement time in comparison with conventional measurement as well as with some existing state of the art methods. The electrophoretic display (EPD) is the main solution to electronic papers, but most of them can display the image or text in black and white particles only. The users may prefer the EPD showing multiple colors rather than the black/white content only. In this paper, we introduce the driving system for a color EPD, which is composed of three kinds of particles. The system aims at optimizing the visual quality based on a new driving waveform by equipping with an optimization method for color and tone reproduction. This paper introduces a novel compact ultralightweight multiband RF energy harvester fabricated on a paper substrate. The proposed rectenna is designed to operate in all recently released LTE bands (range 0.79–0.96 GHz; 1.71–2.17 GHz; and 2.5–2.69 GHz). High compactness and ease of integration between antenna and rectifier are achieved by using a topology of nested annular slots. The proposed rectifier features an RF-to-dc conversion efficiency in the range of 5%–16% for an available input power of −20 dBm in all bands of interest, which increases up to 11%–30% at −15 dBm. The rectenna has been finally tested both in laboratory and in realistic scenarios featuring a superior performance to other state-of-the-art RF harvesters on flexible substrates. The use of paper in electrical insulation, especially in power transformers, remains a topical subject. The interest for the insulating paper, despite the emergence of many synthetic materials is ascribed to its low cost price and its ability to an oil impregnation. However its strong hydrophilic character remains the main difficulty for its implementation in electrical insulation. This affinity to water absorption and/or adsorption shows that a good understanding of the moisture effect becomes imperative. Several studies were carried out on the subject but a systematic study of the moisture effect on overall behavior of paper has not been achieved. This work is meant to be a contribution for this systematic investigation. The first step of this study, which is the object of the present article, concerns an examination of time variation of the electrical currents, under dc stress, for different moisture levels. A particular attention is given to the polarization and depolarization currents. These currents are examined during alternate charges and discharges sequences. An increase of the current, during the application of continuous voltage was noticed. This unexpected phenomenon would be related to an electro-dissociation and/or polarization processes. Oxidation ageing experiments on paper insulation and transformer oil have been performed using two different techniques. One is a traditional ageing study wherein degree of polymerization (DP) is measured after conditioning in sealed bottles containing paper submerged in oil, where the partial pressure of oxygen over the oil is varied. Paper is sampled at certain intervals during 8 months and DP-values are measured. The other study was carried out by means of a microcalorimeter; continuously measuring the heat flow from the paper-oil sample. We find that the degradation reaction rate is not linear with oxygen concentration and that the activation energy of oxidation is lower than what has earlier been found for hydrolysis. The microcalorimeter appears to mimic ageing characteristics for oxidation and can potentially be a useful tool for quick ageing investigations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Results of Frequency Domain Spectroscopy measurements are known to be largely influenced by environmental conditions, such as the temperature. Because field measurements, last hours after de-energizing the transformer, the ambient temperature may affect the results. Especially in cold regions of the world, extreme care are required to interpret the results when performing tests at relatively low surrounding temperatures. A better understanding and analysis of the dielectric test results are therefore only possible with a clear understanding of the physical behavior of the insulation system in response to the ambient conditions. In this contribution, the dielectric behavior of a composite oil paper insulation system has been explained from the properties of Debye basic model. A series of experiments have been performed under controlled laboratory conditions with preset moisture content inside the insulation. The equivalent circuit parameters of a laboratory made oil paper condenser bushing model were obtained using a non-linear optimization procedure. Since the dielectric parameters values are geometry dependent, poles, calculated from resistances and capacitances, were used as they are independent of the geometry. In this paper, we present a framework for studying folding problems from a motion-planning perspective. The version of the motion-planning problem we consider is that of determining a sequence of motions to transform some configuration of a foldable object (the start) into another configuration (the goal). Modeling foldable objects as tree-like multilink objects allows us to apply motion-planning techniques for articulated objects with many degrees of freedom (many links) to folding problems. An important feature of this approach is that it not only allows us to study foldability questions, such as, can one object be folded (or unfolded) into another object, but it also provides us with another tool for investigating the dynamic folding process itself. The frame-work proposed here has application to traditional motion-planning areas such as automation and animation, to paper-folding problems studied in computational geometry, and to computational biology problems such as protein folding. Voltage-time (v-t) characteristic plays an important role during the insulation coordination of a power system. Power transformer is the crucial equipment in the design of a reliable power system. During the operation of a transformer, Oil Impregnated Paper (OIP), the widely used winding insulation of transformer, undergoes significant irreversible aging. Aging alters the dielectric properties of the OIP reducing it's withstand capability. Hence in this work, the impulse v-t characteristic of fresh OIP and 8 years service aged OIP of the same manufacturer are compared. Moreover, when the transformers are directly connected to Gas Insulated Substations (GIS) and during the switching operation of vacuum circuit breakers, OIP is stressed by Very Fast Transient Overvoltage (VFTO). In addition, transformers are subjected to repeated impulses generated during multiple lightning strokes, switching operations of circuit breakers and HVDC converters. Various studies have pointed out the adverse effect of VFTO and repeated impulses on transformer insulation. Therefore, the effects of VFTO and repeated impulses (both LI and VFTO) on the v-t characteristics of fresh and service aged OIP are quantitatively assessed and discussed with reference to the Basic Impulse Insulation Level (BIL) and protection level of the transformer insulation. Accumulation of interfacial space charge in oil-paper interface is a critical issue in insulation diagnostics of transformers. This interfacial charge mainly accumulates due to the conductivity difference of oil and paper. Accumulation of interfacial charge leads to localized field enhancement, which further leads to partial discharges and acceleration in the aging of insulation. Therefore, from the point of view of transformer insulation diagnostics, assessment of interfacial charge is very important. However, it is not easy to estimate interfacial space charge behavior from the transformer diagnostics methods currently in use. In case of Polarization-Depolarization Current (PDC) measurement, a well known method for transformer condition monitoring, the effect of interfacial charge is reflected in the non-linearity of current response during polarization and de-polarization. During de-polarization process, a part of the interfacial charge accumulated during polarization period is absorbed by the electrodes producing a current, which is difficult to separate using conventional linear dielectric theory. In this paper, an attempt has been made to separate this current component from de-polarization current through considering charge de-trapping mechanism. Terming this current component as de-trapping current, its relationship with other parameters of transformer insulation is discussed. The developed methodology has been applied on several practical transformers. Supercapacitors have drawn numerous attentions in recent years since they can deliver relatively high power and energy densities. This article introduces an all-printed paper based surface mountable supercapacitor (SMS), which could withstand the reflow soldering process when integrated into microelectronic systems. The device was fabricated by screen printing and stencil printing processes, contributing to low cost and large-scale fabrication. Furthermore, building electronic devices on ubiquitous paper substrates had advantages of light weight, low cost, and eco-friendliness, etc. Based on activated carbon electrode material and ionic liquid electrolyte, the capacity of the supercapacitor could reach 14 mF at the device volume of 3.2 mm ? 2.5 mm ? 0.175 mm, besides, the specific volumetric capacity was superior than most of the commercial SMS devices. The effect of HV impulses on surface and cavity partial discharges (PD) of oil-impregnated paper (OIP) is investigated in this work, by subjecting specimens to impulse voltages superimposed on a continuous AC voltage. The superposition of transient and AC voltage is relevant to insulation systems in power-system equipment, which is exposed to transients such as lightning and switching impulses during its operation. For several different PD-generating defects in oil-impregnated paper, the PD behaviors before and after the impulse are compared. The influence of moisture content is studied by using OIP with moisture content <0.5%, 3.0% and 5.5%. The results show a distinctive behavior of PD due to the impulse for each defect and insulation condition, either by change in the PD rate and magnitude or by causing PD inception or extinction. Recordings of the voltage signals and associated PD measurements during and after the incidence of a high voltage transient are of potential use for condition assessment of the insulation of power transformers and their bushings, as a form of online diagnostics.
