Voltage-controlled three-phase three-leg inverters are widely applied in various occasions. The inverters are generally switched to the current-controlled mode to limit the fault currents when short-circuit faults happen. Under symmetrical fault, the inverter can be controlled as a symmetrical, three-phase current source. However, the voltage limiting will happen under asymmetrical fault. As a result, the fault phase currents will be distorted and cannot be completely controlled. Considering that the voltage limiting is mainly caused by large load impedance of healthy phase under asymmetrical fault, the voltage limiting is avoided by paralleling the virtual impedance with the output filter capacitor in this paper. As a result, the current limiting loop is not broken and the fault phase currents can be effectively controlled. The implementation of virtual impedance in control system and the influence of virtual impedance on the stability of system are also analyzed in detail in this paper. This paper proposes an optimization approach for day-ahead reactive power planning to improve voltage security in transmission networks. The problem is formulated as a voltage-secure multi-period optimal reactive power dispatch (MP-ORPD) problem. The optimization approach searches for optimal set-points of dynamic and static reactive power (var) resources. Specifically, the output includes set-points for switching shunts, transformer taps, and voltage magnitudes at the regulated buses. The primary goal is to maximize the dynamic reactive power reserve of the system, by minimizing the reactive power supplied by synchronous generators. As the size of the MP-ORPD problem increases significantly with increasing number of contingencies and time periods, efficiency is crucial for practical applications. In this paper, a decomposition technique based on consensus and alternating optimization, where integer variable targets are obtained via MILP, is used to partition the MP-ORPD problem into a set of subproblems, which can be solved in parallel to reduce the computation time. The proposed MP-ORPD problem and its solution algorithm are integrated into the EPRI-VCA software. The results of various power networks of large electric utilities in the Eastern interconnection demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm in providing preventive control schedules. In order to achieve the purpose of extending the speed range and reducing power electronics devices for the permanent-magnet linear motor drive system, a half-centralized open-end winding (OEW) topology is studied for rail transit applications in this paper. In this topology, compared with the traditional OEW topology, the number of voltage-source-inverters (VSIs) can be reduced from four to three to drive two OEW movers and all these VSIs share a common dc bus voltage. In order to improve the steady-state performances, a four-vector phase model predictive voltage control (FV-PMPVC) is proposed in this paper. Due to the spatial distribution of phase voltage vector (PVV), an orthometric synthesis principle (OSP) is proposed to calculated the duration time for the vector synthesis, which reduces the computation burden and enhances the robustness. Comparing the existing control method, FV-PMPVC can get similar dynamic performances but better steady-state performances. Additionally, the half-centralized topology using FV-PMPVC can have same speed range while less VSIs are required. The effectiveness of FV-PMPVC is verified by experimental results. In this paper, a new modulation strategy based on the carrier-based switching strategy for the non-square direct matrix converters (MC) is proposed to control the active power of distributed generation (DG) units. In this strategy, the active power of DGs is controlled by the central input current control of the non-square direct MC independent from the voltage and frequency. Conventionally, each DG has a converter, and for supplying a load with N number of DGs, N number of converters are needed and each converter has its own modulation switching and control strategy to control the power output of each DG. Needless to say, in a microgrid with N number of DGs, the control strategy of each converter has more complex structure than that of a microgrid with one converter, and surely the former strategy entails more volume and price. Using the proposed converter in this paper, it is possible to supply a load with N number of DGs through one converter. Also, the power outputs of all DGs are controlled by a central control strategy. The proposed central control strategy is described and simulated for a typical microgrid. Experimental and simulation results validate the effectiveness of the proposed converter and the proposed strategy. The capacitor condition monitoring is an important issue for the reliable operation of modular multilevel converters (MMCs) in high-voltage applications. The numerous capacitors make the monitoring for the capacitor condition complex and computation-consuming. This paper proposes a hierarchic capacitor condition monitoring strategy to assure the reliability of high-voltage MMCs. In the strategy, the switching times of the switching signals are counted to detect the condition of the capacitor in each submodule (SM). Then, the subsequent capacitance calculation method is only conducted to the abnormal capacitors indicated by the above condition detection algorithm. Meanwhile, the variations of the measured and reference capacitor voltages are employed to calculate the capacitance in the proposed method. The condition detection algorithm shrinks the scope where the abnormal capacitors locate, which avoids calculating the total capacitances in MMCs. In the proposed capacitance calculation method, the complex operations are further saved. Both the two measures reduce the computation burden effectively. The implementation of the whole monitoring strategy is simple and fit for high-voltage MMCs. Moreover, the strategy has no adverse influence on the normal operation of MMCs. In the conventional sliding mode control, the four-leg distribution static compensator (DSTATCOM) currents are controlled based on a current error in each phase. However, the four currents in a four-wire system can not be independently controlled variables and hence one of the four controllers is redundant in conventional schemes. Further, the current dynamics of a DSTATCOM converter are coupled through converter pole voltages in the natural reference frame. This leads to cross-coupling in the sliding variable equations with respect to four manipulated input variables. Considering the above points, in this paper, the current due to Thevenin’s equivalent load neutral-point voltage is considered as a fourth independent controlled variable and the corresponding system dynamic equations are presented. To get a decoupled feature, a new sliding surface function is structured. The performance of a DSTATCOM with the proposed control scheme under various operating conditions is validated through a detailed simulation study and experimental results, obtained from a laboratory prototype of four-leg DSTATCOM. This paper presents a novel active power control scheme for SRMs that are used as S/G units at MEAs; the proposed method uses a vector-controlled SAF, facilitating the acceleration of the SRM during starter mode and the efficient power control of the SRG at various operational points during generator mode. Moreover, an energy storage unit is incorporated in the SAF, aiming at enhancing the SRM's starting torque production and taking full advantage of the SRG's energy generation capability, through the appropriate phases’ magnetization regulation that is imposed by the developed adaptive SAF vector control. In addition, the proposed scheme provides enhanced FRTC during both modes of operation. The mathematical analysis is verified through MATLAB/Simulink simulations, while the performance of the S/G concept under study is evaluated via real-time CHIL tests, with the use of the dSPACE 1202 (MicroLabBox) platform and the 16-bit dsPIC30F4011 microcontroller. Conventional model predictive control (MPC) for three-level active neutral point clamped converter (ANPC) utilizes weighting factors to achieve the optimal control of multiple control objectives in a single cost function. However, the selection of these weighting factors has an impact on the performance of the controlled objectives significantly. Tuning of weighting factors is usually tedious and lacks theoretical background. Moreover, the predictive and evaluation process for multiple objectives optimization have to be carried out by enumerating all admissible switching states within one loop. To simplify the complexity of this process and eliminate the effect of weighting factors, this paper proposes a cascaded predictive control scheme for a 3L-ANPC inverter fed induction machine (IM) drive. With the proposed approach, three separate cost functions for three control objectives, stator flux vector, neutral point voltage and device loss distribution are evaluated in a cascaded way, so that the optimization of these control objectives is performed independently. A 3L-ANPC inverter driven IM drive is studied in this paper to verify the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm. Experimental results in different operating conditions confirm that the proposed method achieves satisfactory steady-state and transient performances comparable to the conventional predictive control approach. The weighting factors used in the conventional method are eliminated and the computational effort is reduced by 68% compared to the conventional method without any sacrifice in the drive performance. This paper presents a simple pulse width modulation algorithm for control of an ultracapacitor based energy storage system used for source and load support applications. As opposed to dual loop control philosophy that is widely used for backup applications, this paper presents a simple single loop current control that is only useful for controlling the ultracapacitor based DC/DC converters used in source and load support applications. The proposed PWM blocking method necessitates the DC/DC converter to operate in five states and takes into consideration the essential operational limits associated with the ultracapacitors. The performance of the proposed algorithm is verified experimentally using a 24 V laboratory prototype setup. The digital implementation of all the control loops of a versatile buck-boost (VBB) dc–dc converter used in a stand-alone photovoltaic application is proposed in this paper to improve existing digital-analog sliding-mode-based implementations. All three control loops: maximum power point tracking (MPPT), fast input voltage regulation, and inner high-bandwidth current control, have been programmed in the same digital signal controller (DSC). A Model Predictive Control (MPC) based algorithm has satisfactorily solved the challenge of implementing the nominal 100 kHz switching frequency current loop. The MPC cost function is distributed throughout the algorithm to achieve three specific goals: the tracking of the reference current (G1), a quasi-constant steady-state switching frequency (G2), and the assurance that the duration of an interval is larger than the time required to calculate it (G3). The third goal requires the current control to toggle between peak- and valley-modes depending on the operating point. The correct fulfillment of these control objectives on the proposed MPC-based algorithm has been validated through simulations and experimental tests performed on a purpose built-prototype. In this paper a control method for a matrix converter (MC) based on the heterodyne concept from the communication field is presented. The method is used to convert the high frequency of a microturbine generator’s (MTG) output voltage to the utility grid’s frequency. In this control method a frequency modulation (FM) of the MC’s switching frequency is achieved using a DQ0 analysis of the converter’s filtered output voltage with the utility grid’s frequency as a reference. After filtration, the MC achieves a conversion to the reference frequency with a minimal total harmonic distortion (THD) of the output voltage while using a low switching frequency. In addition, the proposed method decouples the output frequency, phase angle and voltage amplitude, which allows them to be controlled separately. This significantly simplifies the required control, and enables a robust and low-cost design. The theoretical analysis, simulation and experimental results of the method are reported. This paper proposes a novel dual input nine-level inverter (DINLI) topology which requires only seven controllable devices. The dual inputs are un-identical DC voltage sources in the ratio 1:3. A simple control scheme is derived by appropriately modifying the phase disposition pulse width modulation technique to generate high-quality 9-level output from the DINLI topology. At any given instant, a maximum of four switches conduct out of which only a maximum of two switches operate at high frequency, bringing down the switching and conduction losses significantly and improving the overall system efficiency. The bidirectional DINLI (BDINLI) topology with reactive power capability can be realized by replacing the unidirectional devices with the controlled switches (i.e., total nine switches). In addition, the proposed DINLI topology does not require extra voltage balancing circuits which further improves the efficiency. The DINLI operation is verified through MATLAB simulations for grid-connected applications and its extension to an n-level, 3-phase application is also investigated. Renewable energy is an advisable choice to reduce fuel consumption and $\rm CO_{2}$ emission. Therein, wind energy and solar energy are the most promising contributors to reach this goal. Although the hybrid wind/solar system has been widely studied, the real-time current sharing based on their maximum capacities is rarely achieved in terms of seconds. Based on this, this paper proposes an accurate current sharing and voltage regulation approach in hybrid wind/solar systems, which is based on distributed adaptive dynamic programming approach. Firstly, the equivalent wind/solar model is built, which is an indispensable preprocessing to achieve the complementary between wind energy and solar energy. Therein, the wind energy and solar energy can output relative current according to their respective capacity ratio, which ensure the maximum utilization ratio of renewable energy source. Furthermore, current sharing and voltage regulation problem is switched into optimal control problem. Under this effect, each source agent aims to obtain the optimal control variable and achieve accurate current sharing/voltage regulation. Moreover, an adaptive dynamic programming approach based on Bellman principle is proposed. It can achieve accurate current sharing and voltage regulation. Different from typical circuit breakers, breakers used to switch AC filters in convertor stations have to operate frequently according to the real-time operation mode and daily load changes. Therefore, the performance of filter breakers decreases very quickly, which leads to frequent accidents. Both preinsertion resistors and controlled switching devices can suppress switching transients. In this paper, a comparative analysis of whether a controlled switching device and preinsertion resistor should be adopted is carried out using PSCAD. The transient is calculated as the combined result of the switching angle and preinsertion resistor value, and the optimal configurations are proposed. This paper presents a combined control scheme that consists of two complementary control strategies, namely hierarchical control and autonomous control to handle contingencies in a multi-terminal high voltage direct current (MTDC) system. The proposed hierarchical control considers three optimal targets, i.e., equal or proportional power sharing, minimizations of transmission loss and total DC voltage variation. The primary control layer implements the droop control for voltage source converters (VSCs). While in the secondary control layer, voltage reference setpoints of the VSCs in droop control scheme are calculated by the proposed optimal power flow method with the equal or proportional power sharing as equality constraints. As the hierarchical control relies on communication system, the autonomous control for power sharing can be activated during communication system malfunctioning or rapid power variation caused by renewable energy sources. The combined control strategy can greatly increase the reliability of the MTDC system. High penetration level of single-phase solar PVs in low voltage distribution systems has raised concern about the Voltage Unbalance (VU) level. Real-time phase reconfiguration using Dynamic Switching Devices (DSD) has been proposed as a cost-effective solution to mitigate the excessive level of Voltage Unbalance. DSDs are fast power electronics devices that could change the phase connection of a solar PV with minimum disturbances. Most of the proposed methodologies for controlling DSDs are based on a central controller and the assumption of availability of Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) and a communication system. In this paper, we propose a distributed control methodology to control DSDs based on the measurement from the local node only and using the sensitivity of nodal voltage to power injection. Each DSD decides on phase swapping if it rectifies the unbalance index of the local node. We show that decreasing the Voltage Unbalance Factor (VUF) of individual nodes will improve the unbalance situation of the whole feeder. VSC-HVDC systems are being increasingly employed in the power systems. The recently installed HVDC systems have a power capacity similar to traditional power plants. Hence, they are expected to have a similar behaviour as traditional synchronous generators during faults in AC grid, within their limits of course. Recent grid codes require HVDC converter stations to incorporate fault ride-through (FRT) capabilities in order to avoid HVDC converter station disconnection from AC grid for certain fault characteristics. In this paper, two FRT mechanisms are suggested for the two converter stations of an HVDC system. One FRT mechanism is added to the DC voltage control loop of the master converter station, while the other FRT mechanism is added to the active power control loop of the slave converter station. The objective is to ensure the stable operation of the HVDC system during faults that may occur in AC grids located on both sides of the HVDC system. The performance and stability of the suggested FRT mechanisms are tested considering the pre-fault power flow direction and all possible types of balanced and unbalanced faults. This paper investigates the Multilevel Current Source Converter (MCSC) STATCOM. It proposes a new method of modulation. The new modulation method produces less THD and di/dt at the terminals of the MCSC STATCOM when compared to the widely used Phase-Shifted Carrier SPWM (PSC-SPWM). To ensure the inductors' currents remain balanced, a Current Balancing Algorithm (CBA) is presented. The CBA does not require any controls. It relies on assigning optimum switching states to each CSC module in real-time. In addition, two control strategies are presented in this paper. The first one assumes the STATCOM to be a SISO. Therefore, it only requires one PI controller. However, the gains for the controller must be changed if the STATCOM was to transition from capacitive mode to inductive mode, or vice versa. The second control strategy overcomes this problem by implementing a TITO integral state feedback controller. The contributions of this paper are validated via simulation and experimental results. This paper proposes an adaptive model of modular multilevel converter (MMC) for electromagnetic transient (EMT) simulations. The model is applicable to MMCs with arbitrary numbers of half-bridge and full-bridge submodules. The proposed design includes average value model, arm equivalent model, and detailed equivalent model. It allows smoothly transitioning from one model to another during time-domain simulations depending on the desired accuracy and execution time constraints. Modifications required in conventional MMC models to achieve smooth transitions are presented in the paper. Time-domain initialization methods are developed for each constituting model, including initialization of the appropriate control system blocks. The effect of reduction in the terminal voltage of a grid-tied inverter together with minimization in total harmonic distortion (THD) of terminal voltage and current, in the presence of dead-band in the switching remains always challenging for the researchers. With high switching frequency, this issue increases by many folds. The grid-tied inverter used for harmonic compensation acts as a shunt active power filter (SAPF). The implementation of the dead-band elimination technique is based on output current polarity detection, suffers from multiple zero-crossing due to the generation of high frequency switching harmonics during SAPF operation. This paper deals with a dead band elimination methodology together with harmonic compensation using SAPF under non-linear and unbalanced loading conditions. Here, SAPF uses a dual fundamental component extraction (DFCE) scheme with modified complex coefficient filter (MCCF) to extract fundamental components for reference current generation to implement an indirect current control PWM scheme. MCCF extracts fundamental components even in the presence of dc offset and unbalancing at the input. For incorporating dead-band elimination in control, exact polarity detection is done separately through SAPF output current estimation using sensed load current, and modified CCF computed reference source current. Since the estimated SAPF output current contains no high-frequency switching harmonics, the dead-band elimination technique can be correctly implemented. To synchronize the zero-crossing of the estimated and actual SAPF current, an adaptive delay control is used. The proposed MCCF based control logic’s performance together with the dead-band elimination technique is validated for SAPF operating under non-linear, unbalance, and dynamic load conditions. The proposed dead-band elimination scheme based SAPF model is developed and simulated using MATLAB/ SIMULINK. The simulation results show a significant reduction in source current harmonics due to the elimination of odd harmonic injection into the system by incorporating dead-band elimination in SAPF operation. In this paper, a finite-control-set model predictive direct torque control (FCS-MPDTC) method is proposed to reduce the torque ripple of a segmented switched reluctance motor (SSRM) at the low-speed stage. Firstly, the prediction dynamic model is established, and the phase torque can be predicted by detecting phase current and rotor position signals. Then, the principle of power converter and selection of voltage vectors are introduced and presented. Considering torque ripple reduction, flux tracking performance and copper losses reduction, the cost function with phase torque, the amplitude of flux linkage and phase current, is established to select optimal voltage vector to control the power converter. In addition, the torque sharing function (TSF) is employed to distribute total torque to phase torque for further torque ripple reduction. Finally, the direct torque control (DTC) is selected as the comparison method, performance of MPDTC is verified by simulation and experiment results. This paper presents a dual-hysteresis band control method for multi-drive systems based on a nine-switch inverter. The drive system contains two independent three-phase induction motors fed by a nine-switch inverter. Independent control of torque, speed, and stator current of two load stages is achieved. The proposed strategy offers a reliable control operation of both induction machines under individual load profiles. Instead of using independent sets of three-phase voltage source converters, the nine-switch inverter is used to drive separate machines. Thus, the volume and size of the power stage are noticeably reduced due to the use of fewer semiconductors. The theoretical concept and design steps of the proposed method are presented. The performance of the closed-loop independent motor control scheme is experimentally validated using a 3.2 kW lab-scaled nine-switch inverter prototype and Altera Cyclone IV Field-programmable gate array. The main challenges for Finite Set-model Predictive Torque and Flux Control (MPTC) include huge calculation amount, large torque ripple, and the selection of weighting factor. To deal with these challenges and achieve the fastest torque response, a novel MPTC strategy with virtual voltage vector-based pattern is proposed in this paper. In each control period, a desired voltage vector is computed based on the maximum torque variation rate. The virtual desired voltage vector is combined by using basic voltage vectors with the minimum switching times. The switching pattern between two adjacent control periods is optimized by using a cost function in realtime. Compared with the traditional MPTC approach, the novel strategy has multifaceted improved performances: faster torque response, less calculation amount, lower switching frequency, reduced torque ripple, higher efficiency and no weighting factor. Since the wide application of virtual synchronous generators (VSGs), the power grid faces great challenges in the safe and stable operation due to their limited thermal capacity and weak anti-disturbance ability. During transient period, for example, a fault occurs in the transmission line, the VSG may lose the transient angle stability and provoke the current hard limit. Even if the fault is cleared by tripping of line, it still faces the problem of instability and voltage dips. To address this problem, in this paper, the post-fault large-signal model of VSG is derived first via the travelling waves based fault information acquisition. Subsequently, with the effect of both active and reactive power loops taken into account, a two-stage simultaneous control scheme is proposed for improving the transient stability of VSG, while considering the current limitation during fault state and voltage support after fault clearance. This method is fulfilled by mode switching and an additional feedback control based on the fault signal. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed method under both symmetrical and asymmetrical faults is verified. Moreover, the application of the proposed method in a multiple VSGs system is also verified. Volt/VAr Optimization (VVO) is becoming increasingly crucial in distribution management systems with renewable sources that require setting their reactive power in coordination with legacy voltage and reactive power control devices. This paper presents a VVO method that operates in complex variables based on the Wirtinger calculus; it employs a penalty method that keeps voltage magnitudes and controller parameters within limits together with a probabilistic rounding technique for handling switched device variables. The complex variable implementation permits using the compensation technique when solving the Karush-Kuhn Tucker (KKT) system, thus achieving a significant speedup due to limiting the number of linear system factorizations. The proposed method is contrasted with a classical VVO implementation employing discrete coordinate search from the current operating point and an enhanced version that uses sensitivity information. Numerical results on distribution networks having up to 3147 nodes show that the proposed method is significantly faster than classical methods and gives operating points free of voltage magnitude violations and lower power loss. Two-stage AC-DC converters are considered as a prominent solution for DC-type electric vehicle (EV) chargers. However, this kind of architecture suffers from high switching losses with large heatsink and DC-link capacitor volume. To relieve this issue, this paper presents a new hybrid modulation for DC-type EV chargers, where a two-phase clamped discontinuous pulse-width-modulation (DPWM) in the front-end circuit is cooperated with the variable frequency triangular-current-mode (TCM) zero voltage switching (ZVS) or its simplified implementation, i.e., boundary-ZVS (B-ZVS) strategy, in the back-end circuit. The former can stop the switching actions in the front-end stage during two-thirds of the grid period, while the AC currents are at their highest values, which can yield to the best switching loss reduction and deliver high power factor operation. Besides, TCM-ZVS or B-ZVS modulations can achieve ZVS turn-on action for all semiconductors during all operating range in the DC-DC stage to further reduce the power losses on the semiconductors. With such characteristics, the proposed strategies can reduce the switching losses of the system to the best extent, and thus allow an enhancement of the system power density by improving the power conversion efficiency. The proposed strategy is described, analyzed, validated, and benchmarked in a 5 kW SMD SiC MOSFET-based two-stage AC-DC converter. The possibility of operating distributed generation (DG) in islanded mode brings several benefits but still faces some problems, especially related to the transition from a grid-connected to an islanded operating condition. When connected to the main grid, DG units operate in PQ mode. During this transition, their controls must be changed to regulate frequency and voltage. The delay for islanding detection, associated with abrupt changes in the control references, may result in large and detrimental transients. This paper proposes a new control structure for a distributed synchronous generator (DSG) to allow a smooth transition from the grid-connected to the islanded operation mode. The proposed control structure uses a compensation loop that was conceived based on the main ideas of the anti-windup bumpless transfer (AWBT) theory (although it is not, strictly speaking, an AWBT controller). The results show that the proposed structure ensures smaller excursions of the DSG variables during the transition and, therefore, the possibility of a successful formation of the islanded system is extended to a wider range of operating conditions. Compared with the conventional two-level dual-active-bridge (DAB) dc–dc converter, the three-level DAB converter could operate with lower voltage rated switching devices and provide more control degrees of freedom, which enhances the control flexibility. This paper proposes a modulation strategy with five control degrees of freedom. In the previous work with multiple control degrees, the optimization strategies for efficiency or inductor current minimization are investigated; however, these strategies all need detailed mode analysis and complex mathematical optimization tools to obtain the optimal duty cycles. In this paper, an optimization strategy for the root-mean-square value of the inductor current is proposed. This method extracts the fundamental and third-harmonic components from the high-frequency voltages on both sides and adjusts the amplitude of the bridge voltages by the vector diagram to obtain the optimal duty cycles. The inductor current can be reduced significantly at light loads with the proposed strategy, so the efficiency of the converter can be improved. Moreover, the optimization process does not need the detailed operation analysis of the converter, nor does it require the complex mathematical optimization tools. A space vector modulation (SVM) technique of a dual-inverter system for an open-end winding motor drive is described in this paper, where one inverter has a battery power source and the other has an only capacitor across the dc bus. The SVM must be achieved to operate the motor with field-oriented control and simultaneously to control the capacitor voltage at a constant value by using redundant switching states of the dual-inverter system. The control of the capacitor voltage is carried out by selecting a charging or a discharging mode in each redundant switching state, taking the instantaneous motor power factor into account. In addition, it is also required to reduce the error voltage pulses, which are generated in output multilevel voltage waveforms during the dead time. The compensation method of the existing dead-time scheme and the improved SVM sequence to reduce the error voltage vectors are proposed in this paper. The proposed methods are examined through several experimental tests and are confirmed to generate superior output voltage waveforms from the viewpoint of the measured total harmonic distortion and dv/dt. Various methods have been presented in the past to emulate the electrical behavior of modular multilevel converters (MMCs). To meet the demands for the reliability aspect study of MMCs, this paper proposes a viable setup to emulate the thermal behavior and to investigate its feasibility for reliability testing and thermal model validation of the power modules in the MMC. The proposed mission profile emulator has three distinctive features: 1) capable of emulating and measuring the thermal stresses of power modules; 2) capable of implementing practical switching profile as a full-scale MMC; and 3) having significantly reduced requirement for dc power supply compared to existing setups used for electrical studies. Theoretical discussions, and simulations as well as the experimental results are presented to demonstrate the capability of the mission profile emulator both electrically and thermally. The emergence of applications which require high-voltage switches has created a tendency to use semiconductor device series stacks. These series stacks permit operation at blocking voltages above semiconductor elements’ nominal voltage. Insulated-gate bipolar transistors (IGBT) are currently utilized for controllability and switching speed, when these topologies are employed. The main challenge therewith is guaranteeing voltage balance between IGBTs, both when blocked and when switching transistors. Most of the methods which have been proposed to mitigate static and dynamic voltage unbalances increase transistor losses. The series stack loss-less high voltage switch (LHVS) which mitigates voltage unbalances, thus reducing switching losses, is presented in this paper. LHVS consists of a circuit, which ensures soft IGBT switching, an energy recovery circuit, and a gate delay compensation circuit. Additionally, the insulation voltage level is guaranteed to be equal between control circuit and high-voltage side of each IGBT. The operating principle of the LHVS is detailed in this paper, as is experimental validation which has been performed for three series stack modules. Static unbalances are reduced to 1%, while the differences between collector–emitter voltage curves in switching “on” do not surpass 8 ns, and switching losses are reduced by 41%, as compared to the hard-switching topology. Multilevel inverters (MLIs) are playing a pivotal role in the power sector with potential applications, such as interfacing renewable energy sources with the grid and several industrial drive applications. MLIs with a smaller number of switching devices are more promising due to their compact size, reduced cost, and higher efficiency compared with their traditional counterparts. This paper, therefore, presents a new three-phase seven-level inverter. This topology is a combination of two cascade-connected two-level voltage-source inverters (VSIs) and H-bridge cells with flying capacitors (FCs). This paper presents the operating principle and the balancing technique for the dc-link capacitors and FCs. The generation of various output voltage levels and the limitation of the sinusoidal pulsewidth modulation control for FC voltage balancing is also presented. The number of components in the proposed circuit configuration and their voltage ratings are considerably lower compared with the recently proposed topologies. The behavior of the proposed circuit configuration is first assessed with simulation studies and is then tested with a laboratory prototype. Solid state transformer (SST) integrated hybrid dc–ac microgrid (HMG) has wide operating capabilities in presence of dc–ac loads, renewable energy resources, and energy storage. This paper proposes control strategies for localized control of zonal hybrid microgrid, enabled by the SST and centralized energy storage devices (ESD) integrated using dual active bridge (DAB) converter. The control of DAB dc–dc converter is modified for zero circulating power flow (ZCPF) operation in both SST and ESD. Power management and coordination control used in this paper ensures the power supply reliability of the zonal HMG integrated through the SST. Microgrid system, along with its proposed controllers, provides a stabilized low-voltage dc and ac network ports, in both grid feeding and forming modes. The performance of the configured HMG system is evaluated under various power management scenarios using the MATLAB software platform. In this paper, an overload and short-circuit protection method is proposed for voltage source inverter-based uninterruptible power supply (UPS) system. In order to achieve high reliability and availability of the UPS, short circuit and overload protection scheme are necessary. When overload or short circuit happens, using the proposed control method, the amplitude of the output current can be limited to a constant value, which can be set by the customer to avoid the destruction of the power converter, and to obtain a faster recovery performance as well. The detailed principle of the proposed protection method is discussed in this paper. It mainly contains three parts in the control diagram for current limit, first is the anti-windup in the voltage and current controllers, then the feedforward of the capacitor voltage to the current control loop, the last is the fast reset of the resonant part of the current controller when overcurrent happens. This paper presents a novel seven-level inverter topology for medium-voltage high-power applications. It consists of eight active switches and two inner flying capacitor (FC) units forming a similar structure as in a conventional active neutral-point-clamped (ANPC) inverter. This unique arrangement reduces the number of active and passive components. A simple modulation technique reduces cost and complexity in the control system design without compromising reactive power capability. In addition, compared to major conventional seven-level inverter topologies, such as the neutral point clamped, FC, cascaded H-bridge, and ANPC topologies, the new topology reduces the dc-link voltage requirement by 50%. This recued dc-link voltage makes the new topology appealing for various industrial applications. Experimental results from a 2.2-kVA prototype are presented to support the theoretical analysis presented in this paper. This paper presents bidirectional grid-connected modular multilevel converters (MMC) with direct digital control and division-summation processes to achieve power-injection and rectification functions. A direct digital control is developed to track current references, regulate dc-bus voltage and cell voltage, and balance the upper and lower dc-bus voltages. It can accommodate wide filter-inductance variation and take care of source voltage harmonics to achieve tight current tracking and low distortion output current. Based on the power-balance principle, the commands of arm currents can be determined directly. In this paper, the MMC configuration is introduced first, and then the control laws for current tracking and voltage regulation are derived in detail. This paper presents a neutral-point deviation and ripple compensating control method applied to a three-level neutral-point-clamped (NPC) converter. The neutral-point deviation and its harmonic components are analyzed with a focus on the average current flowing through the neutral-point of the dc link. This paper also proposes a control scheme compensating for the neutral-point deviation and dominant harmonic components under generalized unbalanced grid operating conditions. In this paper, a single-inductor dual-output (SIDO) dc–dc converter is proposed. The significant feature of the proposed converter is feeding a constant power load in low-voltage side (LVS) port, where even feeding a variable load at LVS does not have any cross regulation to high-voltage side port with the desired approximation. Magnificently, both merits are obtained in open-loop manner, which is an outstanding characteristic in comparison with that of the existed converters. In this paper, soft commutation and soft switching of switches and diodes are investigated along with the aforementioned main novelty. Moreover, detailed theoretical analyses of the proposed SIDO dc–dc converter in continuous conduction mode are presented besides the comparisons with some other structures. This paper describes a dc-link voltage control method of a single-phase back-to-back cascaded H-bridge inverter (SBCI) for a medium-voltage motor drive system. The main advantage of the SBCI topology over the conventional regenerative cascaded H-bridge topology with a three-phase active front-end (AFE) is a simple system structure, which is composed of an input transformer, a power cell, a current sensor, etc. However, the challenging points of the SBCI are larger voltage ripple in the dc-link capacitor and imbalance of dc-link voltages of each phase. The asymmetric dc-link voltage of each power cells could cause unstable operation such as over-modulation due to the lack of the dc-link voltage of a particular phase and result in over-voltage or under-voltage faults. In this paper, the control strategy of the dc-link voltage for the SBCI that uses the negative-sequence voltage of the converter is described. The proposed control method is verified with a computer simulation whose target is a 6.6-kV–1.25-MW medium-voltage drive system. Also, through the experimental setup with the prototype SBCI whose power rating is 16.2 kVA, the dc-link voltage of each AFE has been controlled within a 0.5% error of its reference value at the full load. This paper proposes a distributed coordinated voltage control scheme for distribution networks with distributed generation (DG) and on-load tap changer (OLTC). In this scheme, static synchronous compensators (STATCOMs), DG units and OLTC are coordinated to regulate voltages of all buses to be close to the nominal value in the distribution network, mitigate voltage fluctuations, and minimize the number of operations of OLTC while considering different temporal characteristics of voltage regulation devices. The optimization problem of coordinating DG units and STATCOMs is decomposed by the gradient projection (GP) method. The local controller optimizes the reactive power outputs of DGs and STATCOMs according to local voltage and reactive power measurements, and still achieves the optimal coordination of DG units and STATCOMS in a decentralized manner without a central controller or communication between local controllers. The OLTC control scheme is designed to correct the long-term voltage deviations based on model predictive control (MPC) while minimizing the number of operations. The local controllers send the calculated reactive power references of DG and STATCOMs to the OLTC controller, which achieves distributed coordinated voltage control and mitigates the computation burden. This paper proposes a multifunctional control strategy and associated control algorithms for distributed wind-turbine (WT) based nano-grids connected to a distorted utility-grid. The contribution is on a new strategy with innovative control algorithms to coordinate multiple converters for a multitasking operation of the nano-grids. The novelty is on a unique control design with feasibilities: maximizing the generated power from WT, maintaining power quality in both ac- and dc-sides under critical conditions of the power grid, and improving power quality against distortion from local nonlinear loads under a reduced switching frequency. A robust fast-dynamic predictive control method is developed for current controllers to fulfil the multifunction. Unconstrained deadbeat control inputs are derived in twofold targets: ensuring fast dynamic response and significantly reducing both the computation and switching frequency for finite predictive control. The control system is applied on a permanent-magnet synchronous generator (PMSG) WT-based nano-grid connected to a distorted utility-grid. An OPAL-RT-based real-time platform is used for comparative studies among the proportional integration (PI) control, finite predictive control (FS-MPC), and proposed control method. The performance verification exhibits the power quality improvement in both the nano- and utility-grids under critical conditions via high-performed regulation of currents, voltages, reactive power, and rotor-speed of the PMSG-WT. This paper presents an isolated single-stage on-board electric vehicle charger without an intermediate DC-link. Based on an isolated current-source topology, the converter features soft-switching in semiconductors regardless of load variation for the full AC line voltage range. Moreover, it requires no external snubber or clamp circuits. The power factor correction and voltage regulation are provided by a relatively simple phase shift modulation, while the amount of circulating energy is kept at minimum. The charger is distinguished by its efficiency characteristic – the maximum is achieved in the constant power charging mode. The control method, component stresses, and design constraints of the topology are analyzed. The concept is verified using a 3 kW experimental SiC-based prototype, which reaches a peak efficiency of 96.4%. This paper presents a new single-source three-phase seven-level inverter with an inherent three-time voltage boosting capability for medium-voltage applications. The proposed topology is comprised of series connection of two switched-capacitor (SC) networks with an added half-bridge module per phase. Each of such integrated SC networks requires a single capacitor associated with three active power switches. The three-time voltage boosting feature of the proposed topology can reduce the dc-link voltage requirements by 50% in comparison to the traditional neutral point clamped (NPC), flying capacitors, active NPC (ANPC), hybrid clamped ANPC, and cascaded H-bridge topologies, and 75% to advanced ANPC topologies. It can also reduce the number of required switches and capacitors as well as their voltage stresses compared to those state-of-the-art topologies reported in the literature. By integrating “n” number of added SC networks in the proposed seven-level basic topology, the number of output voltage levels can be extended to 2n+3 per phase. A finite control set model predictive control algorithm is also derived to control the converter in both the active and reactive power exchanges modes without distorting the generated grid current quality. The capacitor voltage balancing is inherent in the proposed topology, and thus, there is no need for any additional voltage balancing circuit, which further reduces the control complexity. An improved two-stage model predictive current control (MPCC) for three-phase three-level converters in the paper, which can simultaneously achieve common-mode voltage (CMV) reduction, effective dc-link capacitor voltage control, and decreased computational burden, is proposed. Compared to the other current control strategies, it has the capability of handling multiple control objectives and possesses a simple structure. Furthermore, it greatly reduces the CMV since the peak CMVs of all the candidate voltage vectors are constrained to be less than one sixth of the dc-link voltage. Line-switching operations introduce several concerns to microgrid operators since they trigger reliability and power quality issues in addition to increasing the wear and tear cost of switching devices. This paper proposes a novel methodology for achieving seamless line-switching in low-inertia islanded microgrids. The proposed methodology aims at mitigating the detrimental line-switching impacts by minimizing the power flow in the switched lines at the moments of executing the switching operations. The minimization of the power flow is realized by optimizing the droop control parameters of the DGs during the transition from one network topology to another. Besides, during executing a series of line-switching operations, the sequence of switching is also optimized to minimize the total switched power. While optimizing the line-switching execution sequence, the transitional droops are optimized for each line-switching operation within that sequence. A dynamic mixed-integer nonlinear programming problem is formulated to find both the optimized dynamic transitional droops and line-switching sequence simultaneously. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed seamless line-switching methodology where the switched power can be reduced by more than 80% for a single line-switching operation and 54% considering a series of four switch exchanges in addition to achieving several instances of zero-current switching. Microgrids with multiple converters suffer from excessive pressure on the communication network during traditional voltage and frequency regulation control. This paper proposed an event-triggered control strategy based superconducting magnetic energy storage (SMES) scheme to improve AC microgrids stability under successive disconnection of sources or step change of loads. By designing an event-triggered mechanism, each converter in the microgrid sends its own information to SMES in a non-periodic way. Then the control method of bus voltage and frequency regulation using SMES is constructed, which enables SMES to update its control mode.
