Negative-sequence current is required to be intentionally injected to support the power grid or compensate the imbalanced load in asymmetrical faults utilizing STATCOM. However, the extreme compensation range of negative-sequence current injection becomes complicated when grid voltage becomes asymmetrical. This article presents a novel off-line strategy for negative-sequence current compensation under two typical kinds of asymmetrical grid faults — single-phase voltage drop and double-phase voltage drop, with the following two benefits simultaneously: maximizing negative current compensation capacity; avoiding iterations and reducing computation burdens. In this paper, the mechanism of DC voltage balancing among three phases in STATCOM is analyzed and a new identification method of negative-sequence current compensation range is explored out. To simplify the calculation, this paper takes the ratio of negative-sequence reactive (Iq-) and active (Id-) current as a variable (s). In this way, the relationship between the extreme compensation range, asymmetrical voltage sag depth of power grid h is drawn with MATLAB. Different from the previous iterative method, the off-line identification method is applied to avoid huge iterations. By fitting the curve, the precise ranges of negative-sequence current compensation under different asymmetrical grid faults are approximated as simple polynomials, thus significantly reducing the computation burdens. The modular multilevel converter (MMC), owing to the presence of a large number of submodules (SMs) and energy storing elements, requires a large footprint and initial investment. To address these issues, this paper proposes the switched modular multilevel converter (SMMC). It consists of two major elements; the chain-links (CLs), consisting of cascade connection of SMs as in MMC, and the single-pole-triple-throw (SPTT) switches, which can be realized using either the T-type or NPC-type switch strings. The SMMC works on the principle of connecting all the phase-legs in series and their respective positions are mutually interchanged. It offers a compact structure as the SMs count is reduced to 33% of MMC, which results in a much lower energy storage requirement. Furthermore, it does not have inter-phase circulating current problem and hence the CL inductors can also be avoided. The SMMC structure, operating principles, control, and modulation schemes are explained in detail. A detailed comparison of SMMC with the other major existing converters is carried out to highlight the important features of SMMC. The efficacy of SMMC is validated using PSCAD simulation studies with a 19-level grid-connected SMMC model. This paper focuses on the issue of network connectedness (NC) in security-constrained optimal transmission switching problems, which is complicated by branch contingencies and corrective line switching. Two criteria are firstly proposed with the principle of preserving NC as much as possible within reasonable limits. By extending the electrical flow based NC constraints, a proposition is derived to associate different cases of NC with the optimum of a linear program, yielding the mathematical formulation of the NC criteria. By Karush-Kuhn-Tucker conditions, this formulation is further transformed into a tractable version which can be incorporated with existing SCOTS models without affecting the applicability of original solution approaches. In this paper, a novel impedance network referred to as a high-gain switched-coupled-inductor quasi-Z-source network (hgSCL-qZSN) is presented. The proposed topology employs a two-winding switched-coupled-inductor and a switched-capacitor in the impedance network, which offers a higher voltage boost capability when compared to most of the existing ZS-based topologies. In addition, the proposed SCL-qZSN has a low peak magnetizing current, which leads to a smaller core volume. This, in turn, reduces costs as well as core/winding losses. Moreover, to produce higher voltage gains, the presented hgSCL-qZSN requires lower winding turn ratios and shoot-through (ST) ratios, which leads to lower voltage stresses on the passive and active components. This paper proposes a novel polygonal voltage space vector structure (SVS) having 30 sides, for a star-connected induction motor drive. The SVS eliminates the presence of harmonics up to 25th order from motor phase voltage throughout the entire modulation range, providing a torque profile devoid of lower order pulsations. Linear modulation is extended till 99.63% of base speed without exceeding the motor phase voltage rating. Topology consists of a dc-link fed primary inverter and two equal low voltage modular capacitor fed secondary inverters. Here the harmonics generated by the primary inverter is canceled by the secondary inverter which acts as a switched capacitive filter. This paper proposes a fifth-order resonant immittance network based dual-active-bridge (DAB) converter and an optimal modulation method that will ensure high-efficiency operation of the converter under wide-range variations in voltage ratio and output power level. The proposed modulation method is based on the concept of total power loss minimization, where a loss model is developed and an optimization algorithm is formulated to compute the optimal set of internal and external phase shift parameters that will lead to the maximum efficiency for a given set of operating parameters including voltage ratio and output power level. It is found that to maintain high-efficiency operation under wide-range variations in voltage ratio and output power level, the DAB converter is required to switch between different operation modes and neither soft-switching operation nor unity-power-factor operation is able to achieve wide-range high efficiency performance when used alone. In this paper, many impedance-source inverters with coupled inductors have been investigated to obtain a high step-up boost ratio. However, the leakage inductors in these topologies induce great voltage spikes at the dc link, which will increase the voltage stress of switches. Thus, the power level of inverters is limited. Furthermore, the efficiency of the inverters can be degraded by the losses associated with leakage inductors. To address abovementioned issues, this paper proposes a family of low-spike high-efficiency Y-source inverters. The proposed inverters have the ability of eliminating voltage spikes at the dc link and recycling the leakage energy via the additional diode and capacitor. In order to show the excellent characteristics of the proposed topologies, this paper compares the performances of the proposed inverters and the improved-Y-source inverter in many aspects. In this paper, a dual-fed (DF) common dc-link topology open-end winding permanent magnet synchronous motor for aircraft high-speed starter–generator application is considered. While on one hand the common dc bus configuration significantly simplifies and reduces the costs of the topology, on the other hand it allows the zero-sequence current (ZSC) to flow freely in the system. High-speed machines are characterized by low phase inductance, which implies low zero-sequence impedance. A small time constant of the zero-sequence circuit produces a high-frequency, high-intensity ZSC ripple with the risk of harming the switching devices. This paper presents a novel hybrid space vector pulsewidth modulation that allows to instantaneously eliminate the zero-sequence voltage (ZSV) produced by the two voltage source converters (VSCs) by square wave modulating one of the two VSCs. The non-sinusoidal machine back electromotive force (EMF) has been considered and the effect of the converters’ dead time on the ZSV has been analyzed. The square-wave-modulated VSC uses insulated-gate bipolar transistor (IGBT) devices, whereas the other uses Silicon Carbide (SiC) technology. This paper presents a novel seven-level inverter topology for medium-voltage high-power applications. It consists of eight active switches and two inner flying capacitor (FC) units forming a similar structure as in a conventional active neutral-point-clamped (ANPC) inverter. This unique arrangement reduces the number of active and passive components. A simple modulation technique reduces cost and complexity in the control system design without compromising reactive power capability. In addition, compared to major conventional seven-level inverter topologies, such as the neutral point clamped, FC, cascaded H-bridge, and ANPC topologies, the new topology reduces the dc-link voltage requirement by 50%. This recued dc-link voltage makes the new topology appealing for various industrial applications. Experimental results from a 2.2-kVA prototype are presented to support the theoretical analysis presented in this paper. This paper presents two voltage domain stacking topologies for powering integrated digital loads such as multiprocessors or 3D integrated circuits. Pairs of loads and capacitors are connected in series to form a stack of voltage domains. The voltage is balanced by switching the position of the capacitors in one case and the position of the loads in the other case. This method makes the voltage regulation robust to large differential load power consumption. The first configuration can be named the load stacking topology. The second configuration can be named the capacitor stacking topology. This paper aims at proposing and comparing these two topologies. Models of both topologies and a switching scheme are presented. The behavior, control scheme, losses and overall performance are analyzed and compared theoretically in simulation and experiments. In low-power applications of photovoltaic (PV) systems, the transformerless grid-connected inverters have been preferred to increase the efficiency and reduce the cost, size, and power losses when they are compared to the ones with the transformer. A transformerless single-phase inverter topology with a single dc-link capacitor for the grid-connected PV systems is proposed in this paper. The proposed inverter has been simulated by using a cooperation process of the MATLAB and SPICE package programs and it has been implemented for experimental verification. The proposed inverter reduces the high-frequency common-mode leakage current caused by parasitic capacitances of PV panels, whereas it is controlled with the unipolar sinusoidal pulsewidth modulation. Also, the results show that the common-mode voltage remains constant. The efficiency of the proposed inverter has been compared to that of the most common topologies having the dc-link decoupling during the zero voltage states. This paper describes a dc-link voltage control method of a single-phase back-to-back cascaded H-bridge inverter (SBCI) for a medium-voltage motor drive system. The main advantage of the SBCI topology over the conventional regenerative cascaded H-bridge topology with a three-phase active front-end (AFE) is a simple system structure, which is composed of an input transformer, a power cell, a current sensor, etc. However, the challenging points of the SBCI are larger voltage ripple in the dc-link capacitor and imbalance of dc-link voltages of each phase. The asymmetric dc-link voltage of each power cells could cause unstable operation such as over-modulation due to the lack of the dc-link voltage of a particular phase and result in over-voltage or under-voltage faults. In this paper, the control strategy of the dc-link voltage for the SBCI that uses the negative-sequence voltage of the converter is described. The proposed control method is verified with a computer simulation whose target is a 6.6-kV–1.25-MW medium-voltage drive system. Also, through the experimental setup with the prototype SBCI whose power rating is 16.2 kVA, the dc-link voltage of each AFE has been controlled within a 0.5% error of its reference value at the full load. DC microgrid has attracted more and more attention due to its unique characteristics, but the development of a dc microgrid is also facing some challenges, such as interruption and isolation of short-circuit fault currents. Therefore, the dc circuit breaker plays an important role in ensuring the normal work of a dc microgrid. In this paper, a novel bidirectional dc solid-state circuit breaker is proposed to realize the bidirectional flow of energy, which ensures the higher operating efficiency of the dc microgrid. Compared with other solid-state circuit breakers, the proposed novel topology has simpler structure, common ground, and fewer components. First, this paper makes a detailed analysis of the different working stages of the circuit when the fault occurs in combination with simulation results of the circuit topology. Then, the standard of selecting the components through the calculation and analysis of the circuit is given in this paper. This paper proposes a capacitor voltage regulation method for the dual converter with a floating bridge for aerospace applications. This topology has previously been reported, but with a constrained voltage utilization factor due to the need for capacitor voltage regulations. In this paper, the effect of switching states on the voltage variation of capacitor is quantitatively modeled and an enhanced space vector modulation scheme with current feedback is proposed to achieve an active control of the floating capacitor voltages. This proposed method also allows further exploitation and utilization of converter voltage. The relationship between the allowed modulation index of dual converter and load power factor is obtained and expressed using a fitted polynomial equation. The advantages of the proposed method include boosted voltage utilization and superior performance in term of capacitor voltage balance. These advantages have been proven through simulation and experimental results on RL loads as well as with an open-end winding induction motor. The proposed modulation scheme can boost the converter voltage utilization by at least 10% while achieving full four-level operation. The photovoltaic (PV) output voltage varies over a wide range depending on operating conditions. Thus, the PV-connected converters should be capable of handling a wide input voltage range while maintaining high efficiencies. This paper proposes a new series resonant dc–dc converter for PV microinverter applications. Compared with the conventional series resonant converter, a dual-mode rectifier is configured on the secondary side, which enables a twofold voltage gain range for the proposed converter with a fixed-frequency phase-shift modulation scheme. The zero-voltage switching turn-on and zero-current switching turn-off can be achieved for active switches and diodes, thereby, minimizing the switching losses. Moreover, a variable dc-link voltage control scheme is introduced to the proposed converter, leading to a further efficiency improvement and input-voltage-range extension. The operation principle and essential characteristics (e.g., voltage gain, soft-switching, and root-mean-square current) of the proposed converter are detailed in this paper, and the power loss modeling and design optimization of components are also presented. A trinary multilevel converter uses a few heterogeneous H-bridge submodules (SMs) to synthesize an output voltage with multiple levels. Two major limitations of this converter are that it needs multiple dc sources and it cannot operate under pulsewidth modulation (PWM). This paper addresses these limitations by adding a low-voltage H-bridge SM to this converter and proposing a new switching algorithm. The resulting PWM-based asymmetric cascaded H-bridge converter uses only one dc source and synthesizes a high-quality output voltage. This improved converter can be a potential choice for real and reactive power support in power system applications. This paper also proposes methods for stability analysis and design of this converter. This paper describes a new four-terminal pair (4TP) digital sampling impedance bridge designed for the frequency range up to 1MHz and small impedances, such as shunts. The bridge is capable of comparing impedance standards of arbitrary ratios in a full complex plane from approximately 100k $\Omega $ down to 50m $\Omega $ , limited by the maximum achievable current 3A. To keep low uncertainties, a new multiplexer was designed and a very simple and fully automated linearity correction method based on the pair of calculable resistors was developed and validated. This paper describes the design and details of the bridge topology, basic uncertainty budget, and first results of the validation. The expanded uncertainty of impedance module is about 50 ${\mu }\Omega /\Omega $ at 1MHz for impedance ratios up to 1:16 and voltage drops above 10mV and the expanded uncertainty of a phase angle was about 360 ${\mu }$ rad/MHz. Expanded uncertainty for frequency 100kHz about 10 ${\mu }\Omega /\Omega $ was reached. Typical expanded uncertainty for low-impedance ratios below 1:1.1 is only 35 ${\mu }\Omega /\Omega $. Set of measurement of impedance standards of known values and a small international comparison of ac–dc and phase angle errors of current shunts were carried out to validate the bridge capabilities in a wide range of impedances. Electric motorcycles use a battery storage system and a controlled inverter (motor drive) to drive the wheels. Given that the sale of electric motorcycles is expected to grow significantly over the next decade, the aim of this research is to add a supercapacitor storage system to this simple network in order to extend the autonomy of the motorcycle. This paper analyzes and demonstrates the benefits of two different structures for adding a supercapacitor bank to a lithium-ion battery pack: a passive filter and a buffer for the battery. The advantages of each structure are presented and design guidelines are provided. In addition, we propose a synthetic inductor filter typology based on the two analyzed structures in order to increase the autonomy of the motorcycle. Simulations and experimental results using real data validate the analysis. This paper then uses real data extracted from an electric motorcycle to compare the four topologies: batteries only, the passive filter, the buffer, and the synthetic inductor semi-active hybrid storage system. The comparison shows that battery capacity is extended up to 7.8% with a smoother current profile. However, due to the losses from the added converter in cascade, the net capacity of the whole system is extended only up to 3.7%. This paper proposes a novel dc power electronic transformer (DCPET) topology for locomotive, ac/dc hybrid grid, dc distribution grid, and other isolated medium-voltage and high-power applications. Compared with conventional PET topology, the proposed DCPET has fewer power semiconductor devices and high-frequency isolation transformers, which can improve the power density and reliability. Fault handling or redundancy design can be achieved to further improve the reliability when some dc–dc modules break down. Also, input voltage sharing control can be omitted to simplify the control system and improve the stability. Meanwhile, soft switching is guaranteed for all the switches, which is beneficial to increase switching frequency and improve power density. This paper proposes a novel method for instantaneous balancing of neutral-point (NP) voltages with stacked multilevel inverters (MLIs) for variable-speed drives. The stacked MLI uses series-connected dc sources and NPs (connecting points of dc sources) to obtain the desired levels. The balancing of NP voltages are obtained by using a low-voltage-capacitor-fed cascaded H-bridge (CHB) per phase of a symmetrical six-phase induction machine (IM), which ensures zero current drawn from NPs (at any given instant). Since no current is drawn from NPs, the single dc-link operation with stacked capacitors is also possible. The scheme is suitable for applications, where low-voltage dc sources and batteries are stacked to form a dc link. A variable-speed operation is done using a seven-level inverter scheme for a symmetrical six-phase IM, which is formed by three dc-link stacked capacitors cascaded with two low-voltage-capacitor-fed CHBs per phase. Furthermore, the method is extended for an open-end IM to obtain a seven-level common-mode eliminated space vector structure using a single dc link. The generalization of this method for any stacked $n$ -level inverter without NP voltage deviation is also presented in this paper. This paper presents the digital implementation of a boundary controller with unipolar switching characteristic for single-phase voltage source full-bridge inverters. This paper expands the application of a second-order switching surface-based control method to unipolar switching of single-phase voltage source inverters (VSIs) using a finite-state machine. The finite-state machine has been formulated considering four different states of the inverter; positive,zero1, negative, andzero2. The second-order boundary control governs the current state of the system and provides proper switching action to keep the system within the desired reference. The control law is implemented digitally in F28m35x digital control card. A full-bridge inverter topology is used to achieve the three-level voltage switching. Various simulations and experiments were performed in a 550 VA, 120 V, 60 Hz VSI with a digitally implemented controller to verify the theoretical predictions. A high-quality voltage output was obtained for various loading conditions. The transient performance of the controller was investigated using a reference and load changes. This paper presents a comprehensive optimization control scheme to improve efficiency and dynamic response of dual-active-bridge (DAB) dc–dc converters. Unified-phase-shift (UPS) control is widely used to increase the efficiency of DAB dc–dc converters by minimizing the peak current, but dynamic performance of the converters needs to be further enhanced. In this paper, to gain superior dynamic performance of DAB dc–dc converters, an equivalent power-balancing (PB) model is employed, which is capable of predicting dynamic behavior of converter output voltages due to input voltage fluctuation and load disturbance. And then, combining the UPS control and the PB control, a comprehensive UPS and PB (UPS-PB) scheme is proposed to improve the efficiency and dynamic performance simultaneously. This work also includes the detailed inductance parameter sensitivity of the proposed UPS-PB scheme and a zonal voltage control strategy to further improve dynamic responses of the output voltage under the start-up process or a large step change of the output voltage reference. Moreover, the variant of UPS-PB scheme for constant power load is analyzed in the experimental part. Multilevel inverter plays an important role in the field of modern power electronics and is widely being used for many high voltage and high power industrial and commercial applications. The objective of this paper is to design and simulate the modified asymmetric multilevel inverter topology with reduced number of switches. The proposed inverter topology synthesizes 21-level output voltage during symmetric operation using three DC voltage sources and twelve switches 8 main switches and 4 auxiliary switches. This paper presents a new topology based on a modified class-E resonant inverter used as an LED series current regulator. The proposed topology behaves as a controllable nondissipative impedance that adjusts the current flowing through the lamp. In this circuit, the LED is placed at the dc side of the class-E inverter, in series with the input filter inductance. The power handled by the ac side is sent back to the input by means of two diodes. Despite the addition of these two diodes, the converter maintains all the advantages of the class-E inverter: low component count, simple control, and extremely low switching losses. The LED current can be controlled with a small variation of the operating frequency. This way, the low-frequency current ripple of the lamp can be strongly reduced even when there is a considerably high input voltage excursion, such as the one expected in electrolyticless high-power-factor LED ballast. In dc distribution networks, the parallel H-bridge dc/dc converters (HBDCs) are widely adopted to convert voltage levels with the higher power rating and reliability, in which the parallel HBDCs are naturally connected in input-parallel output-parallel (IPOP) form. However among IPOP HBDCs, there are complicated circulating currents that will influence the safe and steady operation of dc distribution networks. This paper focuses on the suppression of these circulating currents. First, the detailed mathematic models of circulating currents among IPOP HBDCs are derived. Through the model, it is found that various types of circulating currents exist in the system, including the circulating currents within the single HBDC and the circulating currents among the multiple HBDCs. Hence, the suppression of circulating currents among IPOP HBDCs is a multiobjective control problem. In this paper, it is proven that the conventional one degree of freedom control based on the bipolar modulation cannot eliminate all the circulating currents. Second, a novel two degrees of freedom control method is proposed to suppress all kinds of circulating currents based on the improved modulation way of HBDCs, which consists of two parts. The droop based control is used to suppress the circulating currents among the multiple HBDCs, whereas the common mode control is used to control the circulating currents within the single HBDC. The modular smart transformer (ST) is composed by several basic converters rated for lower voltage and power. In this paper, the quadruple active bridge (QAB) is used as the basic block for the modular ST. In this application, the efficiency and cost are the most important design parameters. Therefore, the paper focus on the design of the converter, with the aim to optimize its efficiency, taking the cost into consideration. To do so, the losses of all components are carefully modeled and a computer-aided design is used, where an algorithm to calculate the losses and cost is developed, allowing to perform multiobjective optimization. Additionally, silicon IGBTs and silicon carbide mosfets are considered for the design and the performance of the converter using both semiconductors technology is compared. Dual active bridge (DAB) based converters offer the benefit of smaller volume due to high-frequency isolation and controllability of active power flow, making them attractive for various applications, such as renewable energy generation, plug-in hybrid vehicles, and distribution systems. This paper presents a novel converter topology along with a modulation strategy for a DAB-based three-phase ac to dc converter. The major benefits are single-stage conversion, no unreliable intermediate dc-link capacitor, reduced number of switches, i.e., only two active switches on the ac side, simple control scheme, open-loop unity power factor operation, bidirectional power flow, and partial soft-switching. This paper presents the design and construction of a sample of Marx pulsed generator based on boost converter (BC) pulse-forming networks (BCPFNs). BCPFN is used instead of the conventional Marx floors for constructing this pulsed generator. BCPFN is carried out by connecting inductors and capacitors in series and parallel modes, respectively, by using solid-state switches, and during this procedure the pulsed generator converts to BC temporarily and increases the voltage of capacitors uniformly to a considerable value. This technique causes an increase in the discharging voltage level to the load that is many times more than its dc voltage source by charging the capacitors to a greater level. In order to take advantage of the benefits of Marx generator and PFN, this paper suggests a new circuit with the minimum number of switches. It means, to compose BCPFN and Marx, we have tried to design the circuit with fewer switches and instead of it we have achieved our desired performance with changing the operating mode in the states of BC, PFN, BCPFN, and BCPFN Marx. The results are simulated with MATLAB software. At the end, the experimental results of the construction of the above-mentioned system at low-power levels are presented, and the topology’s accuracy is proved by comparing them to the results of simulation. A programmable electronic load (PEL) solution is usually needed for comprehensive testing of power supplies. In this paper, a novel PEL based on a hybrid five-level voltage source inverter (VSI) is introduced to emulate a variety of static load behaviors, such as R, L, C loads, high-frequency harmonic loads, and unbalanced loads. Dynamic load behavior, for example, modulation loads, can also be achieved in this paper. A dedicated control structure is proposed for the emulation of different load behaviors and the detailed compensator design is presented to evaluate the system dynamic performance. The proposed PEL system has isolated active dc links to support multilevel converter topology, and it can either dump the energy to a passive load or recycle the energy back to the utility grid through another VSI. Simulation and experimental results are provided to validate the effectiveness of proposed control methods in terms of successfully achieving a variety of load profile functions. This paper proposes a medium-frequency (MF) solid-state transformer (SST) based grid interface for high-power multipulse rectifiers. In the proposed approach, the low-frequency ac (grid) voltage is transformed to MF voltage via front-end converters. The three single-phase MF outputs from these converters are fed to the primary side of a three-phase, five-limb multiwinding isolation transformer (or alternately three one-phase transformers). The secondary side windings from the transformer are configured in a certain “zig-zag” arrangement, which are connected to the inputs of three-phase diode rectifier modules as in a typical multipulse system. The proposed topology can better than double the power density by reducing volume (or weight) of the required front-end isolation transformer while maintaining the same input current quality as a conventional low-frequency transformer based approach. Usage of an open-loop square wave pulse width modulation for the front-end converters makes this approach simple to implement. In this paper, the model predictive current control is introduced in the semicontrolled open-winding permanent magnet synchronous motor (OW-PMSM) generation system with a common dc bus to suppress the zero-sequence current for the first time. Particularly, the basic voltage vectors of the semicontrolled OW-PMSM, which are synthesized by the three-phase full-controlled converter and the three-phase uncontrollable diode bridge, is analyzed and their influences on the zero-sequence current are investigated for the first time in this paper. Then the current-error-based cost function that includes dq-axis current error and zero-sequence current error is designed to evaluate all the voltage vectors. Moreover, to further improve the steady-state control performance of the whole generation system, a zero-sequence current suppression method based on the uncontrollable side voltage vector adjustment, which has the advantage of low computation burden, is developed. In this method, two voltage vectors of the controllable converter are applied during one control period. Based on the distribution character of the basic voltage vector in the semicontrollable OW-PMSM generation system, the first voltage vector is selected according to the three-phase current direction to adjust equivalent vector of the uncontrollable diode bridge, whereas for the second voltage vector, the selection method based deadbeat voltage vector sector is designed to reduce the range of the candidate voltage vector. This paper proposes the integration of the auxiliary power module (APM) and nondissipative balancing hardware of a high-voltage battery. The proposed battery-balancing APM is projected to reduce the costs of nondissipative battery balancing by providing two functionalities: balancing of the high-voltage battery cells and charging of the low-voltage battery. This paper proposes two model predictive control strategies that address simultaneous balancing and charging. Both approaches make unbalanced charge available that increases the effective capacity of the high-voltage battery. The monolithic controller solves the balancing and charging problem as a single optimization problem. In contrast, the decoupled controller defines a separate control law for charging to achieve a higher bandwidth, e.g., for systems without dedicated low-voltage battery. The popularity of multi-level inverters (MLIs) for high power and high voltage applications, is increasing day-by-day. These MLIs are being integrated with the grid for renewable energy extraction like solar photovoltaic (PV) system. The MLI produces a staircase output voltage with low harmonic content and may inject a sinusoidal grid current with improved power factor. Thus, the MLI based grid-tied PV system can operate at the lower switching frequency with reduced filter requirements. This paper presents the various MLIs, their modulation and control techniques for the grid connected applications. A detailed classification of different grid connected Multi-level inverters (GCMLIs) based on the number and arrangement of DC voltage sources is presented. In this paper, a control method for a 3-bridge LLC resonant converter operating with a wide output voltage control range is described. Duty changes that stem from switching devices cause topology transitions that allow the converter to shift sequentially across four operating modes, where the primary resonant tank circuits and the secondary terminals can be connected in parallel or in series making it possible to achieve a wide controllable output voltage (7.5–120 VDC). During topology mode transitions, morphing control within narrow hysteresis bands, which is achieved by varying the switching frequency and duty of the switching devices, maintains a tight regulation without noticeable output voltage transients. Tap changers are commonly used to maintain the limits in medium-voltage lines. Initially based on electromechanical switches, efforts have been made since the 1990's to reduce maintenance expenses with thyristor-based versions. Among the methods to limit the short-circuiting current in commutating taps, the multiwinding coil has demonstrated, during decades of use in the low-voltage field, to be reliable and cheap. Two previous papers showed that multiwinding changers can be applied to medium-voltage lines up to 34.5 kV, 15 MVA with no parallel or series thyristor association. This paper proposes a new topology, based on a double array of tap switches per phase, allowing for step-up the power from 15 to 36 MVA and insertion in any point of the line with no connection to the head transformer. A comparative cost analysis gives technical and economical results for a typical 10 MVA, 34.5 kV stabilizer demonstrating the advantages of the proposed circuit over the electronic single array topology and the classic mechanical solutions. In this paper, two structures are proposed for the switched-inductor quasi-Z-source inverter. In the proposed structures to extend the voltage gain of inverter, two new switched-inductor structures are used. In the proposed structures, voltage across the capacitors in the Z-source network and in the switched-inductor is symmetric and small. The other advantage of proposed inverters is known as achieving higher voltage gain per smaller duty cycle ratio (of shoot-through). Compared with a conventional continuous input current switched-inductor quasi-Z-source inverter at the same gain voltage, there is less of a ripple of input current in the proposed inverters. In this paper, at first the both the conventional and the proposed switched-inductor Z-source inventers are thoroughly investigated to find out their governing relations. Then, the proposed Z-source inverters are compared with the conventional ones by simulating them to assess their performance efficiency. Next, applying the simple boost pulse width modulation the simulation is carried out with PSCAD/EMTDC software. Microinverters require high voltage gain capability for interfacing the low dc voltage output of photovoltaic (PV) module to single-phase ac grid. A two-stage nonisolated inverter is proposed in this paper, with a first boost stage and a second traditional pulse width modulated grid-tied inverter stage. The proposed boost stage consists of a coupled inductor added with a voltage multiplier to achieve the required high voltage gain at high efficiency and to operate over a wide input voltage range. Among the coupled inductor topologies, adding a clamp circuit is a common solution to limit the voltage spike caused by leakage inductance. In the proposed converter, the resonance between the coupled inductor and voltage multiplier is used to address the issue of voltage spike, thereby reducing both component count and device voltage stress. The asymmetrical half-bridge (AHB) converter has been deeply analyzed as second stage in ac–dc light emitting diode (LED) drivers. Galvanic isolation, high reliability and high efficiency are their main advantages while a limited duty cycle range (i.e., 0–0.5) and a poor dynamic behavior are their main disadvantages. As second stage of an LED driver, the most demanding requirement for its control loop is cancelling the low-frequency ripple introduced by the first stage. According to its limited maximum attainable bandwidth, this is normally achieved by implementing a feedforward loop. Nonetheless, the static gain of the standard AHB converter presents a nonlinear relation between the output voltage and the duty cycle. As a consequence, the effectiveness of this feedforward loop is limited. In this paper, the use of the zeta AHB converter as second stage of an LED driver is analyzed and an optimized design is proposed. Regarding its advantages, it presents an extended duty cycle range (theoretically, 0–1.0). Besides, it presents a linear relation between the output voltage and the duty cycle. Therefore, although its dynamic behavior is still limited, it can perfectly cancel the low-frequency ripple introduced by the first stage of the LED driver by means of a straightforward feedforward loop. In this paper, new half-bridge and full-bridge topologies for a switched-boost inverter are proposed. These topologies have a high boost factor in comparison with conventional types. In addition, the proposed topologies have continuous input current and can generate zero-voltage level in output. In this paper, the operation of the proposed inverters in different operating modes is analyzed. Then, the values of inductors and capacitors are designed. Moreover, the used switching pattern and its logical diagram are introduced. A comprehensive comparison between the proposed and conventional topologies in terms of the boost factor, the number of elements, and the efficiency shows the good features of the proposed inverters. This paper proposes a new bidirectional resonant dc–dc converter suitable for wide voltage gain range applications (e.g., energy storage systems). The proposed converter overcomes the narrow voltage gain range of conventional resonant dc–dc converters, and meanwhile achieves high efficiency throughout the wide range of operation voltage. It is achieved by configuring a full-bridge mode and a half-bridge mode operation during each switching cycle. A fixed-frequency phase-shift control scheme is proposed and the normalized voltage gain can be always from 0.5 to 1, regardless of the load. The transformer root-mean-square (rms) currents in both the forward and reverse power flow directions have a small variation with respect to the voltage gain, which is beneficial to the conduction losses reduction throughout a wide voltage range. Moreover, the power devices are soft-switched for minimum switching losses. The operation principles and characteristics of the proposed converter are firstly analyzed in this paper. Then the analytical solutions for the voltage gain, soft-switching, and rms currents are derived, which facilitates the parameters design and optimization. An extended-duty-ratio (EDR) boost converter is studied extensively in this paper for high voltage gain applications with a wide input (and/or output) voltage range. The EDR is a unique combination of an interleaved, multiphase boost converter and switched capacitor configuration that achieves high voltage gain with significantly lower switch voltage stress and switching losses compared to conventional high-gain solutions. Most of the switches in the multiphase EDR experience only a fixed fraction of the output voltage ($1/M, 2/M$ , etc., where $M$ is the number of phases). Through extensive analysis over a wide operating range, it is shown here that the EDR boost converter has inherent current sharing among the phases only in a limited range of duty ratio— $(M-1)/M \leq D \leq 1$. As the duty ratio reduces beyond this range as required in wide input voltage applications, inherent current sharing property is lost. In this paper, techniques to ensure current sharing under all operating zones without requiring current sensors are presented. Instead of having equal duty ratio for each phase, it is adjusted for each phase according to the operating region of the converter. Extensive analysis is presented to derive the required duty ratio changes for the different phases. An unidirectional single-phase three-wire rectifier is proposed in this paper. Such topology is composed of a noncontrolled leg, two controlled legs, and a capacitor bank. A suitable model, pulse-width modulation, and control strategies of the system are proposed as well. The control strategy includes the synchronization method, in which it imposes the grid currents with the same phase angle of the voltages generated by the rectifier. This method ensures sinusoidal grid currents and mitigates the zero-crossover distortions normally caused by the use of diodes. In this paper, two topologies are presented for the enhanced-boost quasi-Z-source inverters (qZSI), namely continuous input current configuration and discontinuous input current configuration of enhanced-boost qZSI with two-switched impedance networks. Similar to enhanced-boost impedance-source inverters (ZSIs), these proposed inverter topologies possess very high boost voltage inversion at low shoot-through duty ratio and high modulation index to provide an improved quality output voltage. Compared to enhanced-boost ZSIs with two-switched Z-source impedance networks, these proposed inverter topologies share common ground with source and bridge inverter, overcome the starting inrush problem, and draw continuous input current and the lower voltage across the capacitors. A soft switching cascade DC–DC boost converter is proposed in this paper. The proposed cascade single-switch converter has a higher step-up voltage gain and a wider turn-of period compared to classical boost converters, which tend to have a problem of narrow turn-of periods at higher output voltages. To reduce the switching losses, an auxiliary circuit was also added to the converter. It has a simple structure with only one main switch, one auxiliary switch and the minimum number of diodes. The proposed soft switching method enables the main switch to turn on at zero-voltage-transition (ZVT) and turn off at zero-voltage-switching (ZVS). Furthermore, the auxiliary switch and diodes are soft-switched thanks to this method. All semiconductor components operate under soft-switching, safe from any additional voltage and current stresses. The study presents the design considerations for the proposed converter, along with principle operations of the topology in a single switching period. Finally, experimental results, which were obtained on a laboratory prototype rated at 300 W, are also presented in the paper. The results show that the proposed cascade boost converter can be operated successfully in soft-switching operation for a variety of input voltages and a relatively wider load range, even at higher voltage outputs. DC/DC converters connected in series or parallel allow low power devices to be used in high power conversions. The input series output series (ISOS) connection is suitable for situations where both the input and output sides are high voltage fields. To ensure that each module shares voltage with the other, this paper proposes an active output voltage sharing (AOVS) control scheme. The scheme introduces sharing control in the output side so that the isolation is not needed between the input and output sides in the control loop. The AOVS control scheme, consisting of a common output voltage loop and individual output voltage sharing loop, has a master–slave structure. To improve the reliability and realize a hot-plug, this paper also provides an automatic master–slave form of the AVOS control scheme. A simulation of the frequency and time domains is used to verify the accuracy of the small signal model, and an ISOS-connected prototype consisting of three forward converters is made to test the steady and dynamic characteristics of the proposed scheme. This paper presents a fault diagnosis technique for high-resistance connection (HRC) in a nine-phase flux-switching permanent-magnet (FSPM) machine based on zero-sequence voltage components (ZSVC), where the neutral-point connection mode is considered. A nine-phase FSPM machine topology is first introduced and no-load back electromotive force waveforms are analyzed. Moreover, the topologies of the nine-phase FSPM drive with different neutral-point connection modes are studied. Then, the mathematical model of a nine-phase FSPM machine with HRC is established with the consideration of the neutral-point connection mode and then the influence of the HRC on the ZSVC is analyzed based on the established model. It is shown that the HRC may be diagnosed by monitoring the change of the spectral contents of the ZSVC. Furthermore, this paper focuses on the situation of the nine-phase FSPM machine with one neutral point. In this case, to remove the influence of the FSPM machine operating point, an effective fault indicator is defined and used for HRC fault detection. Finally, the simulation and the experiment are carried out to validate the proposed method. A new static synchronous compensator (STATCOM) based on the diode-clamped modular multilevel converter (DCM2 C) is proposed in this paper. In this converter topology, the capacitor voltage is clamped by using a low power rating diode in each submodule. The quantity of voltage sensors is significantly reduced and is free from the number of voltage levels. Furthermore, the voltage balancing control method becomes very simple and the capacitor voltage balance speed is fast. Based on the structure of modular multilevel converter, the DCM2C-STATCOM has the capability of Var compensation and negative-sequence current compensation. The topology characteristics and compensation control method of DCM2C-STATCOM are investigated in this paper. Experimental results obtained from a laboratory prototype validate that the capacitor voltage of the proposed DCM2C-STATCOM can be well balanced and the Var and negative-sequence current compensations are effective. Summary: The conventional DC‑DC converters have limited voltage gain at moderate duty cycles. In theory, the large duty cycles should be adopted to reach large boosting factors. But in reality, at extreme duty cycles, the effect of parasitic components become dominant, which leads to increased voltage drops on devices, increased total loss and reduced efficiency. This paper proposes a single‐switch (requiring single gate‐driver circuit) diode‐inductor‐capacitor (DLC) cell‐based basic boost configuration that can solve the abovementioned issues. The employment of single‐switch has led to only two operational modes (in continuous conduction mode [CCM]) and easy control strategy. The continuous input‐current and large step‐up capability make the proposed configuration favourable for renewable or hybrid energy systems in DC microgrids. The simple configuration, modularity, moderate blocking voltage on semiconductors, wide duty‐cycle range, large voltage gains at low duty cycles, common‐ground between source and load are some profits of suggested configuration. The basic topology can be expanded by addition of DLC cells. Based on comparative analysis, the proposed configuration has larger step‐up capability per required components and lesser average normalized blocking voltage on semiconductors compared with other single‐switch topologies. This leads to smaller and cheaper structure with fewer losses. The configuration and operational modes of proposed basic topology (and its extended version) have been explained. Summary: In this paper, a bidirectional diode containing multilevel inverter is introduced to reduce the number of switching elements especially in the case of a high number of output voltage levels. In comparison with classic and recently introduced symmetrical topologies, which are trying to reduce the switch count, this topology has a lower number of semiconductor switches in the same number of output voltage levels. This makes the proposed inverter to be a suitable choice for medium voltage applications like renewable energy applications as well as medium voltage electric drives. Summary: This paper suggests a nonisolated noncoupled inductor‐based topology for direct current (DC)–DC converters for DC microgrids. The proposed configuration profits from advantages like high step‐up capability, continuous input current, simple structure, reduced normalized standing voltage (NSV) on switches/diodes, large gain per devices, common ground point between source‐load, and maximum power point tracking (MPPT) capability.
