New corpora of inscriptions, as well as prosopographical and onomastic studies, have been published in about the last 20 years. These contributions have boosted linguistic research on the different processes of language contact and acculturation that took place in this region. Additionally, further studies concerning Greek dialectology and the Thracian language have completed our previous understanding of the linguistic landscape of Aegean Thrace, but they have also challenged older tenets. This article analyses a syntactic phenomenon peculiar to the legal language of the Greek dialect of Elis: conditional sentences employing the optative in the protasis and, in the apodosis, the optative with the modal particle, marking an injunction. After showing that this modal use is exceptional in contrast to other dialects, we first proceed to the inquiry of the possible origins of the usage of the optative in such contexts, bringing forth a set of hypotheses in order to explain how it could have originated and spread. We then move on to the analysis of the jussive moods found in the inscriptions of Elis from the 6th to the 4th century BC. During this time period the optative with modal particle is gradually replaced, at first by the infinitive and then by the imperative. The exam of the corpus makes it possible to suggest that the distribution of these moods in Elean is conditioned by both chronological and functional factors., Este artigo tem como objeto um fenômeno sintático próprio da linguagem jurídica do dialeto grego da Élida: períodos condicionais com o uso do optativo na prótase e, na apódose, do optativo acompanhado de partícula modal, como forma de injunção. Depois de mostrar que esse emprego modal é excepcional em contraste com outros dialetos, procede-se, primeiro, à investigação das possíveis origens do uso desse modo em tais contextos, levantando hipóteses de como o uso do optativo teria ali surgido e se espalhado. Em seguida, são analisados os modos jussivos presentes nas inscrições da Élida datadas do século VI ao IV a.C. Durante esse período, o optativo com partícula modal é gradualmente substituído, primeiro pelo infinitivo e depois pelo imperativo. O exame do corpus permite sugerir que tanto critérios cronológicos quanto funcionais atuam no desenvolvimento da distribuição desses modos no grego eleio.

Phylogenetic systematics, first used for reconstructing biological evolution, has become popular in historical linguistics for reconstructing the development of language families. This dissertation tests three approaches to phylogenetic analysis of the Ancient Greek dialects in order to determine which one best handles borrowing. For character weighting, only reweighting characters according to their CI (consistency index) improved the resolution of the final tree while still giving a plausible tree topology. NeighborNet captured the basic tree topology, but was not able to capture certain important types of borrowing. Combining taxa through a preliminary cluster analysis also produced a single tree with a plausible tree topology. However, all of these methods fail to capture a circular dialect continuum among the Greek dialects, indicating that tree methods alone cannot capture some important types of linguistic development.

The imminent appearance of the first volume of the Corpus of Oracular Lamellae of Dodona, with over 4.000 mostly unpublished fragments, has been announced. Meanwhile, Eric Lhôte has recently brought out a carefully crafted edition of previously published oracular texts from Dodona, together with a detailed study of the problems they entail. In this review-article we discuss some of Lhôte's interpretations., Se anuncia la inminente aparición del primer volumen del Corpus de las Láminas Oraculares de Dodona con más de 4.000 fragmentos, mayoritariamente inéditos. Entretanto, Éric Lhôte ha presentado en fecha reciente una cuidada edición de los textos oraculares de Dodona previamente publicados, que incluye un estudio pormenorizado de los problemas que plantean. En este artículo-reseña se discuten algunas de las interpretaciones de Lhôte.
