Regarding joking as the central act, this article approaches humour from Speech Act Theory. The focus is on two interactive scenarios in the praxis of joking, expressed in ordinary language by means of such turns of phrase as ‘not to accept jokes’ and ‘to take something as a joke’. The deontic aspects of joking reveal its connection with societal forms of life. This is followed by an examination of hostile humorous acts (teasing, ridiculing), which have distinctive interactive features. This general framework is then applied to the study of discursive injustice, meaning who has the right or permission to joke and/or to take something as a joke., En este artículo, se aborda el humor desde la Teoría de los Actos de Habla, tomando bromear como el acto central. Se estudian dos escenarios interactivos en la praxis del bromear, que se expresan en la lengua ordinaria con giros como ‘no aceptar bromas’ y ‘tomar a broma’. Our study examines the impacts on workers when organisational humour is repeated, sustained, dominating, and potentially harmful, and thus can be considered to be bullying. In an ethnographic study of an idiosyncratic New Zealand IT company, we observed humour that was sexualised, dominating, and perpetrated by the most powerful organizational members. We argue that the compelling need for belonging in this extreme organizational culture influenced workers to accept bullying humour as just a joke and therefore acceptable and harmless even when it contravened societal workplace norms. Our contribution is in identifying and extending the significant theoretical relationship between workplace humour and bullying that, to date, is not well-explored in organizational research

Objective: This position paper draws on findings from the Straight White College Men Project, a qualitative study with heterosexual white college male participants across college campuses in the United States. The purpose of the larger project was to explore and understand how participants perceived institutional and community diversity issues; how they conceptualized their own privileges; and how they articulated their own responsibility to engage in social change. Thus, this paper delivers "lessons learned" from engaging white men in conversations on racism and to provide recommendations for medical educators in the U.S. and in Europe.Methods: Following purposeful sampling methods using expert nominators, data were collected in phenomenological focus groups at 10 U.S. 4-year universities. Focus groups included 3 to 8 participants and were 60 to 90 minutes in length. Analysis included open and axial coding and two themes emerged from a single question focusing on students' potential dissent of racist family or peer comments. Results: Participants struggled articulating how and in what contexts they would challenge family members or friends on inappropriate language or behavior. Reasons for their reticence included struggling to confront parents, not wanting to ruin male friendships, or jeopardizing being ousted by the male peer group. Conclusion: Educators must find ways to help male university students explore their privileges and proclivity to engage in oppressive behaviors. Men also need to understand how their inactions perpetuate systemic oppression and create environments in which minoritized individuals cannot thrive. This paper will reconsider the avoidance and joking distinction among the GÇ ui people, focusing on the interpretation of same sex sibling relationships. By examining their expected behaviours in physical contact, verbal expressions, and exchanging gifts, this paper will show that their behavioural restrictions are milder than those for opposite sex sibliings, but are similar to those for same sex parent-child relationships. Consequently, this paper will argue that the same sex sibling relationship and same sex parent-child relationship should both be interpreted as avoidance/respect, and not, as regarded in the literature, as joking and avoidance, respectively.

The purpose of this article is to analyse how humour and narratives about humour are used in a natural group of adults with Asperger’s syndrome. Narratives about humour and use of humour in the group are analysed from a discursive psychological perspective, informed by insights from both disability studies and critical autism studies. The setting of the research is ethnographic fieldwork in an educational setting in Sweden. In the paper, I show the use of three storylines among a natural group of people with autism (PWA) when talking about humour: the storyline of humourless PWA that dominates within Swedish society; and two alternatives, a storyline of alternative humour among PWA and another storyline in line with the social model of disability, of neurotypical humour or disabling humour. When invoking these two alternative storylines, PWA challenge both the humourlessness storyline and the lack of social accessibility within mainstream neurotypical settings.

This thesis is about the nature of objects and the interaction of bodies with their extensions and remnants. The residual evidence contained within an object, of and from interactions with living things, is an inanimate performance the suggestions of activity within stillness. As part of the hunt for gestures and moments, all things that I bring into the studio are simultaneously objectified and translated into narratives. In turn these transformative processes embody both a non-fiction of their history and origin, and the fiction of assemblage. Words are at the root of my sculptural works, the physical materials are sought through the necessities of the articulation of thoughts. The found objects are in one way or another facts, and the combinations, compositions and manipulations become a fiction. The performance of objects, the tolerances of materials and bodies, generates a story that is the content of this work.

Interview done by Allen Spiker at the Hazen Pioneer Home in Hazen, N.D. with emphasis on a small group of women speaking the Kaschubian dialect of German. It includes their pronouncing words and phrases in Kaschubian as requested by Spiker, as well as talking about their childhood on farm, jokes and stories. At the beginning two women are asked to give their names, but very difficult to understand. Later in the interview there are both men and women speaking including an Edwin Klipfel. There is also more background noise in this portion. Hemtjänstyrket är ett yrke i förändring. Arbetet har allt sedan hemtjänsten startade sin verksamhet 1950 framför allt utförts av vita svenska medelålders kvinnor med bakgrund i arbetarklassen. De som arbetar inom hemtjänsten idag har dock varierande ursprung, kön, klassbakgrund och ålder. Denna avhandling syftar till att belysa hur diskurser om genus, sexualitet, etnicitet och klass bidrar till att möjliggöra och begränsa hemtjänstpersonalens yrkesroll och arbetsvillkor. De teoretiska utgångspunkterna utgörs av queerfeministiska teorier med fokus på hur olika diskurser samverkar i subjektets positionsbestämning. Det empiriska materialet har tagits fram genom deltagande observation och intervjuer med två hemtjänstgrupper. Den ena gruppen består av vita svenska kvinnor med arbetarklassbakgrund boende i en bruksort i Dalarna. Den andra gruppen arbetar i Stockholms innerstad och består av en blandning av människor utifrån kön, etnicitet, klass och utbildningsnivå. I avhandlingen visas att hemtjänstgruppernas sammansättning påverkar deras arbetsvillkor. I den enkönade gruppen utformar kvinnorna homosociala relationer som ger dem utrymme att skämta om män samtidigt som de enas genom att beklaga sin genusbaserade underordning i samhället. I den blandade gruppen formar männen homosociala relationer sinsemellan och bekräftar sin heterosexualitet och överordning gentemot kvinnor genom skämt om kvinnor. I gruppen överordnas de svenska männen kvinnorna och männen med utomnordiskt ursprung. I det direkta arbetet med vårdtagarna utgör dock svenska kvinnor norm, övriga omsorgsarbetare måste omförhandla sin position utifrån normen. I enlighet med den offentliga jämställdhetsdiskursen uppvärderas män och många önskar sig fler män i yrket. Etnisk mångfald tas däremot upp som ett problem. Trots förändringarna inom hemtjänsten kvarstår att personalens kroppsliga och emotionella arbete inte värderas som en kompetens beroende på att kunskapen kopplas samman med kvinnor.

For people in urban environments, practices and beliefs allowing creation of supportive social relationships are important for dealing with economic and other insecurities. This paper examines roles of sinankuya, a kin-based joking relationship, in Bamako, Mali. I argue that people in Bamako use and negotiate practices and beliefs associated with sinankuya for practical purposes. Participant observation, ethnographic interviewing, and historical research were used to examine ways that Malians use this joking relationship to promote social cohesion, circumvent the power of the state, provide opportunities for economic gain, and preserve cultural histories and identities in a rapidly changing urban environment.

This thesis deals with jokes and gender as social meaning. Here gender identity is regarded as one kind of social meaning. The gender identity of the individual is produced in interaction with other persons and is also conditioned by cultural codes. Of particular interest is how social identity is constituted by linguistic means. This is discussed using a model of indexicality, i.e. how linguistic features index one or more dimensions of the social context. Especially the indirect and constitutive relations between language and gender are discussed in terms of stances, acts and activities. In this context the speech act joking is seen as an example of a male gender constituent. A second theoretical angle consists of introducing some linguistic theories of humour and applying them to two empirical materials. The first material consists of audiovisual recordings of school pupils’ group discussions with no adult leader present. The pupils work with the same task, both in unisexual and mixed groups. The study focuses on describing how the speakers present suggestions of their own, and respond to the suggestions of others. The suggestions have lent themselves to being grouped into three categories: serious suggestions, playful suggestions, and joking suggestions. Identifying jokes in conversation can be difficult; thus four criteria for joke identification are applied: intention, structure, reaction and convention. Two types of structural criteria are used: semantic and rhetorical. The second material consists of a questionnaire administered to university students, which asks whom the informant apprehends as funny. A general tendency in the answers is that men only mention men, while women single out both women and men. Another tendency is that few women are found in the answers of the questions concerning the mass media, while women mention many funny women in the questions about their own everyday experiences. Several samples of |Gui conversations were analyzed to examine basic methodological issues. The analysis on the logic of irony and implication reveals that a principle-centered understanding of the conversation such as Grician theory is not sufficient. The organization of interaction in social context is especially important. The formalization of conversational interaction is defined as a systematic differentiation into complimentary roles of speaker and hearer and their alternation in relatively a long cycle, which realizes a particular patterning of the turn-taking. In contrast, frank argument is well-characterized by an immediate-reflexive responsiveness. By applying these concepts to actual social relationships, the model of joking-avoidance relationship is reconsidered.
