Este Trabajo de Final de Grado (TFG) presenta una propuesta de indicadores para elaborar el Informe de Sostenibilidad de la Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (UPM). Esta metodología tiene en cuenta los marcos internacionales dedicados a la evaluación de la sostenibilidad y la organización interna de la UPM. El 5 de enero de 2023 entró en vigor la Directiva de Reporte de Sostenibilidad Corporativa (CSRD). La nueva directiva europea establece los criterios mínimos de las organizaciones que deben presentar el Informe de Sostenibilidad en 2025. La UPM cumple estos criterios, aunque todavía no tiene la obligación de hacerlo. Por lo tanto, es necesaria una metodología que permita a la UPM elaborar su Informe de Sostenibilidad lo antes posible. Este TFG complementa un trabajo previo ya realizado en el Trabajo de Final de Máster (TFM) “PROPUESTA DE MARCO DE REPORTE DE SOSTENIBILIDAD PARA LA UNIVERSIDAD POLITÉCNICA DE MADRID” realizado por Oscar Monjas Hebrero y que debido a laenvergadura de éste quedaron aspectos sin desarrollar como la búsqueda de los indicadores necesarios para hacer este reporting. Para ello, se propone una metodología basada en los siguientes pasos: En primer lugar, es necesario conocer qué información debe incluir el Informe de Sostenibilidad de la UPM. Si se toma como referencia la CSRD, el Informe de Sostenibilidad debería basarse en los European Sustainability Reporting Standards (ESRS). Los ESRS presentan una serie de indicadores (llamados ‘Key Performance Indicators’ (KPI)). Estos indicadores permiten que la información recogida sea objetiva, cuantificable y trazable. Estos KPI requieren de una definición y categorización. Sus tres características permiten medir la evolución y comparación de la información recogida. Por esta razón, se exploran los indicadores de sostenibilidad elaborados por otros marcos internacionales, estándares generales y ránquines especializados en la evaluación de la sostenibilidad de las universidades. More and more companies see great opportunities in the circular model, as it not only allows them to capture additional value from their products and materials, but also to mitigate risks related to price (permanence and fluctuation) and material supply. These risks are present in all non-circular economy businesses. The circular economy also allows for economic growth without the need for more resources. This is because each unit has a higher value as a result of recycling and reuse of products and materials after use. Metrics that establish the degree of effectiveness of a company in making the transition from "linear" to "circular" are still under development. This article makes proposals for circularity calculators setting out different indicators that can be used by designers or company executives as a decision-making tool, but are also used for many other purposes such as internal reporting, procurement decisions and evaluation/scoring of companies or organisations. In particular, these calculators are oriented towards green purchasing by universities.

En este trabajo de final de grado se analizan las propiedades del hormigón y se estudia su reutilización como recurso en la elaboración de anillos. Para ello deben conocerse las propiedades físicas y estéticas del hormigón e investigar su viabilidad como material para la fabricación de anillos. Entre las características más relevantes se incluyen su resistencia, textura, fuerza, color y otras cualidades estéticas que afecten al diseño y a la calidad final de los productos. Además, se estudia la posibilidad de introducir residuos industriales provenientes de fábricas industriales que comprenden etapas de combustión, como el humo de sílice y las cenizas volantes, para promover el desarrollo sostenible en la industria de la joyería. Se comienza realizando un diseño mediante la aplicación Fusion 360, estos anillos se obtienen a partir de distintas tecnologías, como son impresión 3D, termoconformado y corte láser. Los materiales utilizados para realizar los prototipos son: plástico PLA, láminas de madera de DM y láminas de metacrilato. Los prototipos obtenidos se utilizan para realizar los moldes en los que posteriormente se añade el hormigón. Se utiliza la tecnología de moldeo por termoconformado y láminas de plástico EVA, las cuales mediante un aumento de presión y de temperatura se adaptan a los prototipos insertados. El proceso experimental comienza con un ensayo de granulometría. Mediante varios tamices de distintos tamaños se obtiene la distribución de los áridos en función de su tamaño. Para realizar la curva granulométrica se representa en una gráfica el porcentaje de árido que traspasa el tamiz frente a la apertura del mismo. A continuación se realizan diversas amasadas, en ellas se varía la distribución granulométrica, la relación agua – cemento, la relación arena – cemento, la cantidad de superplastificante y la proporción de agregados de cemento. A traditional use of bioenergy is the main source of residential energy in developing countries, essentially using firewood to cook, boil water or heating affecting people in developing countries. Improved cook stoves are more efficient and less polluting, and there is a need to evaluate different design options to facilitate their adoption. There are different types of very economical improved cookstoves with high combustion efficiency. In Mexico, multiple projects about cook stoves have been carried out, the root of this study being one of them: the Patsari cook stoves. The goal of this project was to modify previous stove designs to align with local people’s habits and traditions. This study shows the importance of including the participation of users in the design of the portable model of Patsari cook stoves, applying the Design Thinking methodology. Many designs or design changes have been carried out on cook stoves by different researchers, but users often do not adapt to them. This article, through a field study, shows the importance of integrating theoretical analyses along with user experiences to facilitate the adoption of improved cook stoves and ensure their success.

3D printing PLA wastes were recovered from a well-known reference grade and from different sources. The recovered wastes were subjected to an energic washing step and then reprocessed into films by melt-extrusion, followed by compression molding to simulate the industrial processing conditions. The obtained materials were characterized and the optical, structural, thermal and crystallization behavior are reported. The mechanical recycling process leads to an increase of the crystallinity and a decrease of the intrinsic viscosity of the formulations, particularly in the sample based on blends of different 3D-PLA wastes. Moreover, the obtained films were disintegrated under composting conditions in less than one month and it was observed that recycled materials degrade somewhat faster than the starting 3D-PLA filament, as a consequence of the presence of shorter polymer chains. Finally, to increase the molecular weight of the recycled materials, the 3D-PLA wastes were submitted to a solid-state polymerization process at 110, 120, and 130 °C, observing that the recycled 3D-wastes materials based on a well-known reference grade experiences an improvement of the intrinsic viscosity, while that coming from different sources showed no significant changes. A lo largo del presente proyecto, se llevarán a cabo el despliegue de los conocimientos y recursos necesarios para la construcción de una máquina de ensayo a tracción para probetas de PLA de bajo coste. Esto, englobará, la parte bibliográfica de conocimientos previos a la construcción sobre los ensayos de tracción y la normativa que siguen, la ISO 5893, “Aparatos de ensayo para plásticos y caucho. Tipos para ensayos de tracción, flexión y compresión (a velocidad de desplazamiento constante)”. Además, se mostrarán los distintos diseños y alternativas propuestas para los sistemas de agarre y sujeción de la pieza, distinguiendo entre los materiales comprados de bajo coste y los diseñados para la impresión. Por otro lado, se mostrará el ensamblaje de la máquina y el desarrollo del código encargado del control y de la recopilación de datos del ensayo, así como, el análisis de los mismos para la determinación de las propiedades mecánicas del PLA.

Corrugated cardboard presents small geometries that make unfeasible the use of detailed three‐dimensional numerical models, though homogenization approaches can be used to define equivalent homogenous plate models at a macro‐mechanical scale. In this paper, we performed a finite element analysis of a well‐known chair design, originally made of honeycomb cardboard, but replacing this material with single‐ and multiple‐wall corrugated cardboard. We compared the deflections obtained under some load cases defined by he European Standards EN 1728 and EN 12520 for seating designs, with those obtained for another commercial chair design, originally made of heavy‐duty triple‐wall corrugated cardboard, finding comparable values. We also analysed optimized versions of both chairs, achieving lower deformations. In this way, we could find for each case the material settings with the better resistance‐to‐cost ratio, thus proving the utility of homogenization techniques on corrugated cardboard furniture design, as an aid to choose the most appropriate material settings.

Corrugated cardboard has waved cores with small flutes that prevent the use of detailed numerical models of whole structures. Many homogenization methods in the literature overcome this drawback by defining equivalent homogeneous plates with the same mechanical behaviour at a macro-mechanical scale. However, few homogenization works have considered complete structures, focusing mainly on beams or plates. For the first time, this study explores the application of homogenization approaches to larger structures as an aid in their design process. We also considered triple-wall boards rather than single- and double-wall configurations commonly addressed in the literature. To this end, we adapted the homogenization methods proposed by Talbi and Duong to analyze thin-walled stools made of triple-wall corrugated cardboard. Using a progressive design process, we performed an efficient stool design by removing material zones with lower stresses, with 35% less material, 35% lower vertical deflections, and 66% lower stresses than the initial design. Unlike other corrugated cardboard stools, this design comprises just one folded piece instead of three, thus saving storage space. These results demonstrate the utility of homogenization techniques as an aid in the design process of whole structures made of corrugated cardboard. Further research will consider buckling analysis. Son muchas las causas que pueden hacer que un edificio necesite ser evacuado, llevando a los ocupantes a un lugar fuera de peligro. Para conseguir que una evacuación sea organizada, minimizando los riesgos, debe existir un Plan de Autoprotección en el que se regule la manera en la que se debe actuar. Con este proyecto se busca estudiar las condiciones en las que se desarrolla una situación de emergencia como las mencionadas anteriormente, que provoquen la evacuación de un edificio, concretamente el edificio principal de la Escuela Técnica Superior de Ingenieros Industriales. Una buena alternativa para llevar a cabo el estudio es la simulación, ya que se permite comprender mejor el funcionamiento del sistema sin necesidad de que en éste se den las condiciones requeridas para el estudio, es decir, no se necesita la realización de un simulacro para poder estudiar cómo sucedería. Además, permite estudiar mejor todas las zonas sin necesidad de que haya observadores, disminuyendo la posibilidad de pasar por alto zonas en las que se pueden dar condiciones inesperadas. Por lo tanto se va a crear un modelo que permita conocer cómo se desarrollan estas situaciones de emergencia para poder entenderlas y encontrar mejores soluciones, de manera que se minimicen los riesgos y se consigan evacuaciones rápidas y seguras. Para ello se parte de los planos de la ETSII, que mediante la utilización de dos programas llegarán a convertirse en el modelo que permita realizar estos estudios. El primer programa utilizado es AutoCAD, con el que se reestructurarán lo planos de tal manera que se puedan utilizar en el segundo programa, LEGION, que mediante distintas herramientas permitirá crear las condiciones de la evacuación.

The circular economy model offers great opportunities to companies, as it not only allows them to capture additional value from their products and materials, but also reduce the fluctuations of price-related risks and material supply. These risks are present in all kind of businesses not based on the circular economy. The circular economy also enables economic growth without the need for more resources. This is because each unit has a higher value as a result of recycling and reuse of products and materials after use. Following this circular economics framework, the Polytechnic University of Madrid (Universidad Politécnica de Madrid, UPM) has adopted strategies aimed at improving the circularity of products. In particular, this article provides the result of obtaining recycled PLA filament from waste originating from university 3D FFF (fused filament fabrication) printers and waste generated by “Coronamakers” in the production of visors and parts for PPEs (Personal Protective Equipment) during the lockdown period of COVID-19 in Spain. This filament is used in the production of 3D printed parts that university students use in their classes, so the circular loop is closed. The obtained score of material Circularity Indicator (MCI) of this material has been calculated, indicating its high level of circularity.

Se presenta la historia de la ETSII desde sus inicios centrándose en un elemento singular: la cúpula de esta escuela.

Este es un proyecto planteado y enfocado para todas esas personas que sufren una amputación transtibial del miembro inferior y que se encuentran en una situación desfavorable de recursos económicos, o para aquellas ONGs que ejercen una labor desinteresada, para que con sus recursos puedan mejorar la calidad de vida de muchas más personas. El proyecto ha conseguido desarrollar un pie protésico básico cuyo valor de mercado ronda los 4.500€, en uno cuyo valor es de aproximadamente 105€ mediante procesos aditivos como lo es la impresión 3D, y que puede ser fabricado, ensamblado y reparado por cualquier persona sin conocimientos técnicos. Además, puede acoplarse a cualquier prótesis transtibial ya que cumple con todas las medidas y elementos estandarizados de las piezas del mercado. El proyecto desarrollado a continuación refleja un estudio de mercado y un análisis en profundidad de todos los parámetros que no se pueden ver a simple vista y parecen triviales, pero que con la ayuda de profesionales del sector se ha descubierto que en realidad son complejos y que cualquier variación en ellos determinan resultados finales muy diversos. Para llevarlo a cabo, se han estudiado las partes de un elemento protésico y se han identificado ciertas piezas que no son propensas a mejoras, como los elementos de conexión entre piezas de la prótesis transtibial, o que no son posibles de modelizar dado que no es posible estandarizar la pieza para todos los usuarios, como es el soporte del muñón. Se ha observado, así mismo, que la parte de la prótesis transtibial con mayor margen de mejora es el conjunto del pie, pero no cualquiera de ellos puede ser seleccionado para el estudio, ya que existen muchos con ámbitos de usos y solicitaciones muy variadas y diversas. Este proyecto se ha centrado en el estudio del pie Sach [1] por su escaso número de piezas, que facilitan el estudio simulado en un ordenador PC, ya que los demás tipos de pie aumentan los grados de libertad al contener más piezas y

En este proyecto se llevará a cabo el diseño de un campo de golf y su correspondiente estudio de movimiento de tierras y de la red de riego mediante diversos softwares que trabajan bajo la metodología BIM. Dichos diseños y sus respectivos estudios son sólo unos de los muchos otros realizables en un proyecto de un campo de golf, como la red de drenaje y la red de cableado eléctrico además de las que correspondan a la construcción del Club House y otras edificaciones e instalaciones sociales. Uno de los objetivos de este proyecto es valorar si en la actualidad es factible dar el salto a la metodología BIM a la hora de realizar un proyecto de un campo de golf, o parte de él. Para poder sacar conclusiones debemos establecer objetivos para cada disciplina. En primer lugar, en el estudio de movimiento de tierras se pretende valorar la utilidad de la metodología BIM a la hora de calcular volúmenes de desmonte y terraplén, y ajustar éstos de manera rápida y sencilla cuando sea requerido. Y en segundo lugar se pretende simplificar el diseño de la red de riego, simplificar los cálculos necesarios para el dimensionamiento de la misma, y poder realizar de manera sencilla un mapeo y listado de todos los elementos que la forman. Este proyecto nace del reto que se plantea de diseñar un campo de golf Par 72 en Murcia. El primer paso es buscar un terreno apto para la implantación del campo, realizando un estudio de viabilidad física y medioambiental basado en la geometría, topografía, geología, viabilidad medioambiental e infraestructuras de la parcela en cuestión.

Desde hace tiempo que se empezó a investigar mecanismos que tuvieran la habilidad de “andar” como los seres vivos. Estos mecanismos han evolucionado intentando adaptarse al medio y con la habilidad de sobrepasar los obstáculos de una manera cómoda y eficaz en tan solo unos años. Las principales ventajas de estos mecanismos es la capacidad de desplazarse en terrenos arenosos o abruptos, donde es de gran dificultad o imposible para sistemas que se mueven mediante ruedas. Hay numerosas aplicaciones de estos mecanismos en diferentes ámbitos, desde la agricultura hasta el desplazamiento de una persona discapacitada por terrenos tan comunes como la playa (Mohsenizadeh, 2015), o incluso para el desplazamiento de aparatos en la luna. Por ello, se considera una oportunidad sumergirse en dichas estructuras cinéticas y poder aportar un grano de arroz al avance en diseños de este tipo. En este proyecto en concreto nos centraremos en crear un diseño que pueda ser transportado de manera fácil, de bajo coste y de montaje relativamente sencillo para poder fabricar numerosos ejemplares en diversos lugares donde se desee utilizar. En este trabajo se estudiarán dichos mecanismos con el fin de realizar el diseño de una estructura andante cuyas piezas estén cortadas en madera con una fresadora automática, en tablones predeterminados y economizando tanto en material como en producción con el fin de reducir el impacto ambiental que pueda tener el proyecto.

Aproximadamente 2.800 millones de personas en el mundo quema biocombustibles sólidos para satisfacer las necesidades energéticas básicas, esto supone más de la mitad de la población en países en desarrollo. El uso tradicional de bioenergía es la fuente principal de energía residencial en países en desarrollo y la única fuente disponible en países menos desarrollados, utilizando esencialmente la quema de leña para cocinar, hervir agua o calentar el hogar. Tradicionalmente se hace en un fogón, una estructura de tres piedras en la que apoyan el utensilio de cocina. Esta quema resulta en un proceso de combustión incompleta que emite contaminantes que dañan directamente la salud como material particulado y monóxido de carbono que contribuyen a altas tasas de morbilidad y mortalidad. Se estima que 4 millones de personas en el mundo mueren anualmente por la exposición al aire contaminado de los hogares, siendo las mujeres y niños los grupos más vulnerables. Además, no solo afecta directamente por la inhalación de aire contaminado, sino también las horas invertidas en la recogida de leña y las tareas de cocinado tienen una repercusión directa en la equidad social y desarrollo de las personas y comunidades. El fogón tradicional no solo sirve para cocinar, sirve para iluminar, calentar el espacio o repeler insectos. El cambio a un nuevo dispositivo de cocinado necesita un proceso de adaptación por parte del usuario hasta alcanzar un equilibrio con las nuevas prácticas y observa los beneficios, además que el dispositivo debe satisfacer todas las necesidades que el usuario tenía. Asimismo, cada comunidad, pueblo o ciudad dentro de un mismo país tiene unas tradiciones y costumbres diferentes. En México, por ejemplo, se cocina sobre una plancha redonda, el comal, donde preparan las tortillas con mayor facilidad si el calor está bien distribuido por anillos, enfriándose conforme se aleja del centro. El presente proyecto tiene como objetivo principal el fomento de la vocación de Ingeniero Industrial en niños, y particularmente en niñas, a partir de los 6 años de edad. Para tal fin se crea un portal con experimentos y descargas para niños/as de 6 a 10 y sus familias, así como un libro infantil interactivo para fomentar su curiosidad alrededor del mundo de la ingeniería, a la vez que se da visibilidad a la figura de la mujer en STEM.

En el presente proyecto se aborda el desarrollo de mejoras en el diseño de una prótesis de mano y la investigación y el perfeccionamiento de la mecánica que utiliza para su funcionamiento. Se trata de una prótesis de mano de bajo coste desarrollada con fabricación aditiva y que contará con ciertos movimientos exclusivos prediseñados. El proyecto tiene un fin social, ya que se pretende conseguir una prótesis destinada a niños, adolescentes y personas con pocos recursos económicos. Se pretenden conseguir soluciones viables, de carácter práctico y de bajo coste, accesible a cualquier usuario y que puedan ser impresas en una máquina de impresión 3D. Una aplicación adicional de esta prótesis de bajo coste es su uso durante el periodo preprotésico, mientras el paciente espera la prótesis definitiva. Para llevar a cabo este proyecto, primero se ha realizado un estudio de la mano humana, incluyendo en este estudio la anatomía de la mano, los movimientos básicos de esta y la antropometría, estudio a partir del cual se obtuvieron las medidas a las que tendría que poder adaptarse la futura prótesis. También se realiza una clasificación de las amputaciones del miembro superior y un estudio de la fuerza de agarre de la mano y del par de flexión de la muñeca. A continuación, se realiza un estudio del estado del arte, incluyendo en este la historia de las primeras prótesis y una clasificación de las mismas. Asimismo, se lleva a cabo una clasificación y estudio de las diferentes tecnologías de fabricación aditiva existentes en el mercado. Una vez realizado lo anterior y analizadas con la colaboración de un hospital las prótesis mecánicas desarrolladas con fabricación aditiva, se lleva a cabo el diseño de la nueva prótesis a través de un programa de CAD, en base a las carencias observadas en las prótesis existentes. Estos diseños se deben validar a través de simulaciones por elementos finitos, las cuales permitirán conocer los distintos comportamientos de las prótesis ante los esfue

Motivación. El desarrollo de este trabajo surge como una oportunidad para la introducción en el ámbito de la digitalización tridimensional y de la fabricación mediante el uso de tecnologías de impresión 3D, campo en constante evolución y que de cara al futuro laborable el conocimiento adquirido sobre la materia puede resultar de gran utilidad. Además, el presente proyecto supone un punto de entrada al campo de la experimentación, por lo que ha servido para adquirir conocimientos sobre la realización experimental, así como de las técnicas de diseño y análisis de experimentos. Objetivos del proyecto. El fin último de este trabajo es de establecer una metodología de trabajo que integre el funcionamiento de un escáner 3D y una impresora 3D, de manera que se establezca la base de operación para el uso de ambos equipos, y pueda servir de desarrollo de nuevos proyectos que amplíen lo aprendido con nuevos trabajos de investigación. Para el desarrollo de la metodología es necesario realizar primeramente un proceso de aprendizaje de los equipos, de tal manera que se identifiquen los factores que influyen en un proceso en el que trabajan de forma integrada un equipo escáner 3D y una impresora 3D. Para ello, se realiza un procedimiento de aprendizaje de los equipos, en los que se busca identificar y calificar los efectos que influyen en el proceso de operación, así como de cuantificar los efectos de cada factor y de las interacciones entre ellos. Gracias al entendimiento del funcionamiento del sistema, se es capaz de establecer un protocolo de actuación, de forma que el uso del equipo integrado sea independiente del objeto implicado en el proceso. El presente trabajo persigue establecer si la cúpula del edificio de la Escuela Técnica Superior de Ingenieros Industriales de Madrid (ETSII) tiene valor como elemento representativo del patrimonio arquitectónico e industrial con el objetivo en su caso de promover su protección con la intención de afrontar su recuperación y garantizar su adecuada conservación. El estado actual de esta cúpula es claramente mejorable, sobre todo en su interior. Por este motivo, resulta indispensable garantizar un sistema de rehabilitación para este elemento, que constituye el símbolo de esta Escuela y una importante manifestación de la arquitectura de exposiciones de finales del siglo XIX. En este trabajo se han analizado diversas opciones que pueden justificar su reconocimiento y la posterior inclusión en un programa de protección que reconozca el valor patrimonial de esta construcción, y decidiendo finalmente que la alternativa más viable es el Plan Nacional de Patrimonio Industrial (1).

En este proyecto se ha buscado aplicar una de las nuevas tecnologías que ha despertado mayor interés en los últimos años al ámbito de la investigación médica y de la salud. Se trata de la Fabricación Aditiva, conocida más coloquialmente como impresión 3D. Esta técnica se basa en la fabricación de objetos mediante la deposición de materiales capa a capa. Se aleja, por tanto, de los métodos más tradicionales de fabricación por sustracción de material (como el fresado) o por adición (como la soldadura). Durante los últimos años se ha generado un intenso debate acerca de si esta tecnología supone un valor añadido o resulta viable en el ámbito de la fabricación comercial. Parece clara su incompatibilidad con el concepto de economía de escala y se destaca frente a todo su utilidad en la creación de piezas únicas, personalizadas y a un coste más reducido. Es este aspecto el que resulta interesante a la hora de realizar este proyecto, pues se utiliza para crear modelos únicos. Dentro de la fabricación aditiva pueden encontrarse distintas tecnologías que trabajan con diferentes materiales como metales o plásticos. Algunos ejemplos de estas tecnologías son el sinterizado de metal por láser, la foto-solidificación o el empleado en este proyecto, el conocido como Modelado por Deposición Fundida que aplica plástico fundido capa a capa para crear un modelo tridimensional del objeto diseñado. Esta tecnología se aplica en este proyecto al campo de la investigación médica, en particular al estudio de un conjunto de enfermedades que afectan al parénquima pulmonar, es decir, al tejido. Este proyecto se ha ocupado de la creación de dos conjuntos de modelos, el primer conjunto trata de modelizar el efecto de las enfermedades pulmonares mediante una aproximación por densidad, mientras que el segundo modeliza los efectos del enfisema pulmonar mediante una aproximación geométrica. Leonardo Torres Quevedo fue un ingeniero español que patentó e inventó el 8 de agosto de 1916 el transbordador del Niágara denominado Spanish Aerocar, situado sobre el Whirlpool del Niágara y que actualmente se mantiene en funcionamiento. Gracias a su patente Nº 7348 “Un sistema de camino funicular aéreo de alambres múltiples” Leonardo Torres Quevedo desarrollo un prototipo de transbordador con un sistema de dos tipos de cables diferentes, el sistema de cables sustentador y el sistema de cables tractor. El sistema de cables sustentador está formado por seis cables, unidos a unos contrapesos en un extremo y por el otro anclados a un macizo de hormigón. Los cables pasan por unos sistemas de poleas pertenecientes a las estructuras que conforma el transbordador, una a cada orilla del río Niágara. Sobre estos cables se asienta la cabina de pasajeros, que es guiada a través de estos a lo largo de todo el viaje. Torres Quevedo consiguió demostrar que, con los contrapesos, los cables estaban siempre sometidos a la misma tensión máxima, logrando así mantener los cables tensos en todo momento a pesar de las variaciones de peso en la cabina, lográndose un factor de seguridad suficiente para permitir transportar a personas por primera vez en la historia. El sistema de cables tractor va unido a la cabina por un extremo en su parte superior, dirigiéndose hacia la estación principal (Thompson´s Point) y atravesando la polea motriz, retornando por encima del rio hacia la otra estación (Colt´s Point) donde rodea dos poleas y vuelve quedando atada al extremo opuesto de la cabina. Este sistema de cables actúa como tractor, ejerciendo fuerza sobre la cabina y provocando su movimiento. El motor de accionamiento es eléctrico de tipo Westinghouse de 76CV. El trabajo consiste en la recuperación digital de los planos de todas las piezas que conforman el transbordador, desde las dos estructuras de poleas en los extremos del río, hasta la cabina. An online open access test (CREAX self-assessment) has been used in this work so that students from degrees in engineering in the Universidad Polite¿cnica of Madrid (UPM) could self-assess their creative competence after several classroom activities. Different groups from the first year course have been statistically compared using data from their assessment. These first year students had different professors in the subject ?Technical Drawing? and belonged to several degrees in the UPM. They were as well compared regarding sex and a group of first year students was also compared to another last year group of the degree so as to observe possible differences in the achievement of this competence. Only one difference was detected concerning sex in one of the degrees. Among degrees, the higher marks obtained by students who had done specific exercises for the development of creativity in class is highlighted. Finally, a significantly high mark was observed in students during their last year of degree with respect to first year students. The tool CREAX has become very useful in the assessment of this competence in the UPM degrees in which it has been implemented.

A recent application of computer simulation is its use for the human body, which resembles a mechanism that is complemented by torques in the joints that are caused by the action of muscles and tendons. Among others, the application can be used to provide training in surgical procedures or to learn how the body works. Some of the other applications are to make a biped walk upright, to build robots that are designed on the human body or to make prostheses or robot arms to perform specific tasks. One of the uses of simulation is to optimise the movement of the human body by examining which muscles are activated and which should or should not be activated in order to improve a person?s movements. This work presents a model of the elbow joint, and by analysing the constraint equations using classic methods we go on to model the bones, muscles and tendons as well as the logic linked to the force developed by them when faced with a specific movement. To do this, we analyse the reference bibliography and the software available to perform the validation.

A sensitivity analysis has been performed to assess the influence of the elastic properties of railway vehicle suspensions on the vehicle dynamic behaviour. To do this, 144 dynamic simulations were performed modifying, one at a time, the stiffness and damping coefficients, of the primary and secondary suspensions. Three values were assigned to each parameter, corresponding to the percentiles 10, 50 and 90 of a data set stored in a database of railway vehicles.After processing the results of these simulations, the analyzed parameters were sorted by increasing influence. It was also found which of these parameters could be estimated with a lesser degree of accuracy in future simulations without appreciably affecting the simulation results. In general terms, it was concluded that the highest influences were found for the longitudinal stiffness and the lateral stiffness of the primary suspension, and the lowest influences for the vertical stiffness and the vertical damping of the primary suspension, with the parameters of the secondary suspension showing intermediate influences between them.

This paper describes the collaboration among students and professors in four different subjects, to develop multidisciplinary projects. The objective is to simulate the conditions in a company environment. A new methodology based on student interaction and content development in a Wiki environment has been developed. The collaborative server created an ‘out of the classroom’ discussion forum for students of different subjects, and allowed them to compile a ‘project work’ portfolio. Students and professors participated with enthusiasm, due to the correct well-distributed work and the easiness of use of the selected platform in which only an internet connected computer is needed to create and to discuss the multidisciplinary projects. Quality of developed projects has been dramatically improved due to integration of results provided from the different teams.

We present research involving one such experimental device recently developed in the UK, called a ‘GP’ Thrombus Aspiration Device (GPTAD). This device has the potential to bring about the extraction of a thrombus. Although the device is at a relatively early stage of development, the results look encouraging. In this work, we present an analysis and modeling of the GPTAD by means of the bond graph technique; it seems to be a highly effective method of simulating the device under a variety of conditions. Such modeling is useful in optimizing the GPTAD and predicting the result of clot extraction. The aim of this simulation model is to obtain the minimum pressure necessary to extract the clot and to verify that both the pressure and the time required to complete the clot extraction are realistic for use in clinical situations, and are consistent with any experimentally obtained data. We therefore consider aspects of rheology and mechanics in our modeling.

Simulators can be defined as information systems which reliably reproduce specific phenomena and they are mainly used in training, although their field of application has grown to include manufacturing and medicine among others. In electrical engineering, simulation is an indispensable tool when working with complex systems due to the fact that it enables engineers to understand how systems work without actually needing to see them. They can learn how they work in different circumstances and optimize their design with considerably less cost in terms of time and money than if they had to carry out tests on a physical system. By using computer simulation, not only can an electrical system be designed, but it can also be optimized and its behavior examined in-depth more quickly and cheaply than by using prototypes, tests or analytical studies. Therefore, by being able to see the responses produced as the different parameters are varied, a much deeper understanding of the system under study is reached. In order to properly simulate a virtual world, technologies such as realistic graphics and dynamic simulation with real-time calculations must be used. Peripherals must be used for the system to interact with the user and the immersion comes as a result of stimuli to sight, hearing and touch. A critical factor is the possibility to solve the equations in real-time; that is, there should be no delay compared to the normal environment’s response. There is an important amount of effort being directed towards these objectives. This paragraphs deals with the development of an operation simulator for training and the fundamental objective is to develop a simulator for electrical substations. It will present the methodology to model, simulate and optimize the interoperability and the use of control equipment in electrical an substation to train operators by means of a virtual reality environment.

A virtual injection molding environment has been developed, which allows preliminary machine capacity determination, number of cavities analysis, injection cycle parameter definition, and defects analysis and representation. The environment allows the student to carry out an iteration process in order to optimize the injection molding process parameters. All decision making is based on an Expert System which response is similar to a skilled machine operator.

With the appropriate hardware (HMD, 3D mouse and tracking systems) it is possible to navigate into the virtual world and interact with the elements. Each of the sub-station components has been reproduced in the simulation model, including the behavior laws associated with it, so the complete functionality of the sub-station can be simulated. This module is built into a larger and more complex computer system composed of the actual sub-station control system, the Geographical Information System which defines the topology of the network, and the functional system which simulates the electrical behavior of the sub-station. The application automatically updates in the virtual environment any changes to the sub-station's design and allows access, from this environment, to information on every component. The virtual reality application has been implemented in a hardware configuration and has the same interface as that used in the control system of the real sub-station. In this way, the system developed can be integrated into a replica of the complete power supply network control system emulating a real sub-station, it being able to fully interact with the global system, and allow totally real situations to be simulated.
