Many mothers and fathers are parenting differently since the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. This booklet describes how parents are discovering new ways to strengthen and build upon their relationships with their children and provides advice to parents on how to help their children grow closer to them, to become caring and sharing people, to resist clever advertising, and to love their country. The booklet emphasizes that advertising coaches children to manipulate parents' feelings and that parents need to control their own feelings and teach their children about self-control, empathy, moderation, and charity. The fun of parenting is highlighted and five essential components of the parenting role are discussed: teaching skills, inculcating values, teaching self-discipline, engaging in play, and passing on a sense of "eternal purpose." The importance of teaching friendship skills is also explored. The booklet then details eight lessons in child rearing: (1) children will love their parents no matter what they do; (2) children of all ages want to be parented through structure and rules; (3) children want parents to be parents, not friends or buddies; (4) parents should realize that it is natural to nurture and raise their children and that it is rewarding; (5) children's emotional responses will mirror those of their parents; (6) if parents share their happiness and sadness with their child, their child will share their happiness and sadness with the parents; (7) parents need to share more positives with their children than negatives; and (8) parents should give gifts to their children out of love for their child and not out of guilt. Included are suggestions for "hands-on" parenting of adolescents and compelling descriptions of some fathers killed on September 11, 2001. (KB)

The word "patriotism" summons up a wide range of images, but true patriotism goes beyond special occasions and special people. Do young people know what living as a patriot means? What obligations does a citizen owe to the United States? What opportunities does the country give to him or her? The lessons in this booklet can help students learn by studying past U.S. patriots and considering how a person can determine patriotism not only in a time of crisis but in daily life. Students learn: (1) how love of family and homeland encourages patriotism; (2) what the stories of pilgrims, immigrants, slaves, and Native Americans teach about struggle and opportunity; (3) how different heroism is from celebrity; (4) what happens when patriotism is taken to unhealthy extremes; and (5) why every generation of citizens must be vigilant in preserving American freedoms. Following the "Preface" and "Introduction," the booklet is divided into the six chapters: (1) "Love of Family and Country"; (2) "America, the Land of Opportunity"; (3) "A Free Country Is a Rare and Precious Achievement Every Generation Must Sacrifice to Keep It Free"; (4) "Heroes versus Celebrities"; (5) "Lessons from Being United and Divided"; (6) "Healthy and Unhealthy Patriotism"; and "Epilogue." Each chapter contains three lessons. The booklet can be used as a supplement to existing educational curricula. The questions at the end of each lesson can be used as effective starting points for discussion and to check student understanding of content. (BT)

Genetic and preclinical studies have implicated adenylyl cyclase 1 (AC1) as a potential target for the treatment of chronic inflammatory pain. AC1 activity is increased following inflammatory pain stimuli and AC1 knockout mice show a marked reduction in responses to inflammatory pain. Previous drug discovery efforts have centered around the inhibition of AC1 activity in cell-based assays. In the present study, we used an in vitro approach focused on inhibition of the protein-protein interaction (PPI) between Ca2+/calmodulin (CaM) and AC1, an interaction that is required for activation of AC1. We developed a novel fluorescence polarization (FP) assay focused on the PPI between an AC1 peptide and CaM and used this assay to screen over 23,000 compounds for inhibitors of the AC1-CaM PPI. Next, we used a cellular NanoBiT assay to validate 21 FP hits for inhibition of the AC1-CaM PPI in a cellular context with full-length proteins. Based on efficacy, potency, and selectivity for AC1, hits 12, 13, 15, 18, 20, and 21 were prioritized. We then tested these compounds for inhibition of AC1 activity in cyclic AMP (cAMP) accumulation assays, using HEK293 cells stably expressing AC1. Hit 15 contained a dithiophene scaffold and was of particular interest because it shared structural similarities with our recently reported benzamide series of AC1 inhibitors. We next tested a small set of 13 compounds containing the dithiophene scaffold for structure-activity relationship studies. Although many compounds were non-selective, we observed trends for tuning AC1/AC8 selectivity based on heterocycle type and substituents. Having an ethyl on the central thiophene caused the scaffold to be more selective for AC8. Cyclization of the alkyl substituent fused to the thiophene significantly reduced activity and also shifted selectivity toward AC8. Plasma phosphorylated tau 181 (P-tau181) and 217 (P-tau217) are indicators of both amyloid and tau pathology in clinical settings, but their performance in heterogeneous community-based populations is unclear. We examined P-tau181 and P-tau217 (n = 1,329, aged 30–98 years), in the population-based Mayo Clinic Study of Aging. Continuous, unadjusted plasma P-tau181 and P-tau217 predicted abnormal amyloid positron-emission tomography (PET) (area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUROC) = 0.81–0.86) and tau PET entorhinal cortex (AUROC > 0.80), but was less predictive of a tau PET temporal region of interest (AUROC < 0.70). Multiple comorbidities were associated with higher plasma P-tau181 and P-tau217 levels; the difference between participants with and without chronic kidney disease (CKD) was similar to the difference between participants with and without elevated brain amyloid. The exclusion of participants with CKD and other comorbidities affected the establishment of a normal reference range and cutpoints. Understanding the effect of comorbidities on P-tau181 and P-tau217 levels is important for their future interpretation in the context of clinical screening, diagnosis or prognosis at the population level. © 2022, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature America, Inc.

This Boys' Town publication for parents presents guidelines for a parental and societal response to purse-snatching, shoplifting, and other kinds of stealing that are a part of violence. The guide maintains that a comprehensive public policy approach is needed, one that is based on an appreciation of the development of learning respect for the rights of others. Stealing is used as an example because it is a matrix crime for interdependent violent behaviors. The guide identifies and details three steps for teaching respect for others: (1) teaching respect for others' rights, including teaching children in advance, monitoring children's behavior, explaining that stealing is a serious offense, and teaching respect for the law; (2) responding to early acts of stealing, recommending that children make an apology, and make restitution; and (3) responding to continued stealing, including making certain friends or situations off-limits and replacing the payoffs of stealing with something equally rewarding. The guide also discusses the role of attachment to family members during adolescence and the importance of churches and synagogues in providing welcoming positive relationships. The guide maintains that diversion programs, such as boot camps, for serious stealing offenses are ineffective. Patterson's process of coercive family interaction and its contribution to violent behavior are presented as a model for design of effective treatments. The guide concludes by noting that a consistent public policy approach is needed, one that breaks the problem of violence into manageable dimensions with clear solutions within each dimension. The point system used at Boys Town is often misunderstood, but the approach is a middle ground between two extremes: one relying on classical behavior modification, the other, rejecting behavior as a starting place for helping children get better. There are two major characteristics of the Boys Town approach: (1) teaching skills, such as problem-solving and following instructions; and (2) building relationships. The point system is designed to be used only at the start and should be faded as skills are developed and shaped. When point systems are used as the main focus, they become nontherapeutic and possibly harmful to children. When used properly, extrinsic rewards can hold a youth's attention long enough to stop a behavior so that he or she can rediscover the intrinsic reward of success in school. There are several reasons why rewards may not work. Every child, at some time, lacks motivation or confidence to engage in certain skills or activities. Rewards can provide the incentives needed. Concrete, specific reasons that make sense to the child also need to be given for desired behavior. Justifiable paternalism in teaching plays a role in the Boys' Town system. The model of care at Boys Town has three phases; (1) a child comes to Boys Town with their life out of control; (2) caregivers help children gain control by teaching skills and how to build relationships; (3) young people are progressively in charge of their own lives. Laser-direct writing of graphene structures on different polymeric sources has been demonstrated to be a potential approach to produce, among others, micro-supercapacitors, nano-generators or sensors. Laser-induced graphene is produced on the surface of polymers by using, in general, laser radiation emitted by CO2 lasers due to the good absorption of most polymers to this laser radiation. The fast thermal decomposition and carbonization of the laser irradiated surfaces lead to the formation of graphene. In this work, we have studied the capabilities of other laser sources emitting ns- or ps- pulses to produce graphene on some polymers. These are able to produce graphene patterns with a higher resolution, and finer details can be produced. Finally, we demonstrate the capability of this graphene to be used as temperature sensors

Livestock grazing has been used for conservation management in some situations to reduce exotic plant cover, but supporting empirical evidence is scant. This is particularly true for eastern Australian semiarid woodlands and forests. We surveyed 451 sites across three broad semiarid vegetation communities (cypress pine, black box, red gum) in eastern Australia to examine the effects of recent and longer-term (historic) grazing by livestock on exotic (and native) plant cover. Because our focus was the use of domestic livestock for conservation management, our sites were mostly located in conservation reserves, travelling stock routes and native production forests where domestic grazing is approved via permit. We also included recent grazing by kangaroos and rabbits, which occur widely with livestock across the study sites. Structural equation modelling revealed that recent sheep and cattle grazing was associated with increased exotic plant cover in two of the three communities (cypress pine, black box), and historic grazing was associated with lower exotic (and native) plant cover across all communities. Recent cattle grazing-induced reductions in exotic plant cover in the red gum community resulted from declines in the palatable exotic annual grass Ehrharta longiflora. Higher intensity grazing by rabbits, sheep and cattle in the cypress pine community increased exotic plant cover by suppressing the negative effect of native cover on exotic cover. Higher intensity rabbit grazing reinforced the negative effect of nitrogen on native plant cover, resulting in increases in exotic cover. Overall, we found strong evidence that domestic livestock grazing reduces native plant cover either directly or indirectly in all three communities, but limited evidence that it would be a useful conservation management strategy to reduce exotic plant cover in these communities.

ContextSingle-best-answer questions (SBAQs) have been widely used to test knowledge because they are easy to mark and demonstrate high reliability. However, SBAQs have been criticised for being subject to cueing. ObjectivesWe used a novel assessment tool that facilitates efficient marking of open-ended very-short-answer questions (VSAQs). We compared VSAQs with SBAQs with regard to reliability, discrimination and student performance, and evaluated the acceptability of VSAQs. MethodsMedical students were randomised to sit a 60-question assessment administered in either VSAQ and then SBAQ format (Group 1, n = 155) or the reverse (Group 2, n = 144). The VSAQs were delivered on a tablet; responses were computer-marked and subsequently reviewed by two examiners. The standard error of measurement (SEM) across the ability spectrum was estimated using item response theory. ResultsThe review of machine-marked questions took an average of 1 minute, 36 seconds per question for all students. The VSAQs had high reliability (alpha: 0.91), a significantly lower SEM than the SBAQs (p < 0.001) and higher mean item-total point biserial correlations (p < 0.001). The VSAQ scores were significantly lower than the SBAQ scores (p < 0.001). The difference in scores between VSAQs and SBAQs was attenuated in Group 2. Although 80.4% of students found the VSAQs more difficult, 69.2% found them more authentic. ConclusionsThe VSAQ format demonstrated high reliability and discrimination and items were perceived as more authentic. The SBAQ format was associated with significant cueing. The present results suggest the VSAQ format has a higher degree of validity. Objective: The aim of this study is to present a predictive model of Parkinson's disease (PD) global severity, measured with the Clinical Impression of Severity Index for Parkinson's Disease (CISI-PD). Methods: This is an observational, longitudinal study with annual follow-up assessments over 3 years (four time points). A multilevel analysis and multiple imputation techniques were performed to generate a predictive model that estimates changes in the CISI-PD at 1, 2, and 3 years. Results: The clinical state of patients (CISI-PD) significantly worsened in the 3-year follow-up. However, this change was of small magnitude (effect size: 0.44). The following baseline variables were significant predictors of the global severity change: baseline global severity of disease, levodopa equivalent dose, depression and anxiety symptoms, autonomic dysfunction, and cognitive state. The goodness-of-fit of the model was adequate, and the sensitive analysis showed that the data imputation method applied was suitable. Conclusion: Disease progression depends more on the individual's baseline characteristics than on the 3-year time period. Results may contribute to a better understanding of the evolution of PD including the non-motor manifestations of the disease.

ObjectiveOur primary objective was to compare the performance of unaccelerated vs. accelerated structural MRI for measuring disease progression using serial scans in Alzheimer's disease (AD).MethodsWe identified cognitively normal (CN), early mild cognitive impairment (EMCI), late mild cognitive impairment (LMCI) and AD subjects from all available Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative (ADNI) subjects with usable pairs of accelerated and unaccelerated scans. There were a total of 696 subjects with baseline and 3 month scans, 628 subjects with baseline and 6 month scans and 464 subjects with baseline and 12 month scans available. We employed the Symmetric Diffeomorphic Image Normalization method (SyN) for normalization of the serial scans to obtain tensor based morphometry (TBM) maps which indicate the structural changes between pairs of scans. We computed a TBM-SyN summary score of annualized structural changes over 31 regions of interest (ROIs) that are characteristically affected in AD. TBM-SyN scores were computed using accelerated and unaccelerated scan pairs and compared in terms of agreement, group-wise discrimination, and sample size estimates for a hypothetical therapeutic trial.ResultsWe observed a number of systematic differences between TBM-SyN scores computed from accelerated and unaccelerated pairs of scans. TBM-SyN scores computed from accelerated scans tended to have overall higher estimated values than those from unaccelerated scans. However, the performance of accelerated scans was comparable to unaccelerated scans in terms of discrimination between clinical groups and sample sizes required in each clinical group for a therapeutic trial. We also found that the quality of both accelerated vs. unaccelerated scans were similar.ConclusionsAccelerated scanning protocols reduce scan time considerably. Their group-wise discrimination and sample size estimates were comparable to those obtained with unaccelerated scans. The two protocols did not produce

DESIGN: Case series. PARTICIPANTS: Three hundred forty-seven unrelated families affected by arRP and 33 unrelated families affected by retinitis pigmentosa (RP) plus noncongenital and progressive hearing loss, ataxia, or both, respectively. METHODS: A whole exome sequencing (WES) analysis was performed in 2 families segregating arRP. A mutational screening was performed in 378 additional unrelated families for the exon-intron boundaries of the ABHD12 gene. To establish a genotype-phenotype correlation, individuals who were homozygous or compound heterozygotes of mutations in ABHD12 underwent exhaustive clinical examinations by ophthalmologists, neurologists, and otologists. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: DNA sequence variants, best-corrected visual acuity, visual field assessments, electroretinogram responses, magnetic resonance imaging, and audiography. RESULTS: After a WES analysis, we identified 4 new mutations (p.Arg107Glufs*8, p.Trp159*, p.Arg186Pro, and p.Thr202Ile) in ABHD12 in 2 families (RP-1292 and W08-1833) previously diagnosed with nonsyndromic arRP, which cosegregated with the disease among the family members. Another homozygous mutation (p.His372Gln) was detected in 1 affected individual (RP-1487) from a cohort of 378 unrelated arRP and syndromic RP patients. After exhaustive clinical examinations by neurologists and otologists, the 4 affected members of the RP-1292 had no polyneuropathy or ataxia, and the sensorineural hearing loss and cataract were attributed to age or the normal course of the RP, whereas the affected members of the families W08-1833 and RP-1487 showed clearly symptoms associated with polyneuropathy, hearing loss, cerebellar ataxia, RP, and early-onset cataract (PHARC) syndrome. UnlabelledBecause only pathologic examination can confirm the presence or absence of malignant disease in cancer patients, a certain rate of misinterpretation in any kind of imaging study is inevitable. For the accuracy of interpretation to be improved, determination of the nature, causes, and magnitude of this problem is needed. This study was designed to collect pertinent information from physicians referring patients for oncologic (18)F-FDG PET/CT.MethodsA total of 662 referring physicians completed an 11-question survey focused on their experience with the interpretation of oncologic (18)F-FDG PET/CT studies. The participants were oncologists (36.1%; n = 239), hematologists (14.5%; n = 96), radiation oncologists (7.4%; n = 49), surgeons (33.8%; n = 224), and other physicians (8.2%; n = 54). Questions were aimed at determining the frequency, nature, and causes of scan misinterpretations as well as potential solutions to reduce the frequency of misinterpretations.ResultsPerceived misinterpretation rates ranged from 5% to 20%, according to most (59.3%) of the participants; 20.8% of respondents reported rates of less than 5%. Overinterpretation rather than underinterpretation was more frequently encountered (68.9% vs. 8.7%, respectively). Limited availability of a patient's history and limited experience of interpreters were the major contributors to this phenomenon, according to 46.8% and 26.7% of the participants, respectively. The actions most commonly suggested to reduce misinterpretation rates (multiple suggestions were possible) were the institution of multidisciplinary meetings (59.8%), the provision of adequate history when ordering an examination (37.4%), and a discussion with imaging specialists when receiving the results of the examination (38.4%).ConclusionOverinterpretation rather than underinterpretation of oncologic (18)F-FDG PET/CT studies prevails in clinical practice, according to referring physicians. Background The Australian and New Zealand Germ Cell Trials Group conducted a multicenter randomized phase III trial in men with good-prognosis germ cell tumors of two standard chemotherapy regimens that contained bleomycin, etoposide, and cisplatin but differed in the scheduling and total dose of cisplatin, the total dose of bleomycin, and the scheduling and dose intensity of etoposide. The trial was stopped early at a median follow-up of 33 months after a planned interim analysis found a survival benefit for the more dose-intense regimen. The aim of this analysis was to determine if this survival benefit was maintained with long-term follow-up.MethodsBetween February 1994 and April 2000, 166 men with good-prognosis metastatic germ cell tumors defined by modified Memorial Sloan-Kettering criteria were randomly assigned to receive 3B90E500P (three cycles, repeated every 21 days, of 30 kU bleomycin on days 1, 8, and 15; 100 mg/m2 etoposide on days 1-5; and 20 mg/m2 cisplatin on days 1-5; n = 83) or 4B30E360P (four cycles, repeated every 21 days, of 30 kU bleomycin on day 1, 120 mg/m2 etoposide on days 1-3, and 100 mg/m2 cisplatin on day 1; n = 83). Endpoints included overall survival, progression-free survival, and quality of life and side effects, which were assessed using the Spitzer Quality of Life Index and the GLQ-8, respectively, before random assignment and during and after treatment. All analyses were by intention to treat. All P values are two-sided.ResultsThe median follow-up was 8.5 years. All but five survivors (3%) were followed up for at least 5 years. Overall survival remained better in those assigned to 3B90E500P than in those assigned to 4B30E360P (8-year survival: 92% vs 83%; hazard ratio of death = 0.38, 95% confidence interval = 0.15 to 0.97, P =. 037). The purpose of this study was to use serial imaging to gain insight into the sequence of pathologic events in Alzheimer's disease, and the clinical features associated with this sequence. We measured change in amyloid deposition over time using serial (11)C Pittsburgh compound B (PIB) positron emission tomography and progression of neurodegeneration using serial structural magnetic resonance imaging. We studied 21 healthy cognitively normal subjects, 32 with amnestic mild cognitive impairment and 8 with Alzheimer's disease. Subjects were drawn from two sources--ongoing longitudinal registries at Mayo Clinic, and the Alzheimer's disease Neuroimaging Initiative (ADNI). All subjects underwent clinical assessments, MRI and PIB studies at two time points, approximately one year apart. PIB retention was quantified in global cortical to cerebellar ratio units and brain atrophy in units of cm(3) by measuring ventricular expansion. The annual change in global PIB retention did not differ by clinical group (P = 0.90), and although small (median 0.042 ratio units/year overall) was greater than zero among all subjects (P < 0.001). Ventricular expansion rates differed by clinical group (P < 0.001) and increased in the following order: cognitively normal (1.3 cm(3)/year) < amnestic mild cognitive impairment (2.5 cm(3)/year) < Alzheimer's disease (7.7 cm(3)/year). Among all subjects there was no correlation between PIB change and concurrent change on CDR-SB (r = -0.01, P = 0.97) but some evidence of a weak correlation with MMSE (r =-0.22, P = 0.09). In contrast, greater rates of ventricular expansion were clearly correlated with worsening concurrent change on CDR-SB (r = 0.42, P < 0.01) and MMSE (r =-0.52, P < 0.01). The n_TOF facility at CERN has been designed for the measurement of neutron capture, fission and (n, xn) cross-sections with high accuracy. This requires a flexible and-due to the high instantaneous neutron flux-almost dead time free data acquisition system. A scalable and versatile data solution has been designed based on 8-bit flash-ADCs with sampling rates up to 2 GHz and 8 Mbyte memory buffer. The software is written in C and C++ and is running on PCs equipped with RedHat Linux.

Many sagebrush-grass ranges have been seeded to crested wheatgrass [Agropyron desertorum (Fischer ex Link) Shultes]. These ranges are generally nutritionally inadequate for sheep (Ovis aries L.), except for short grazing periods in the spring and fall. To increase production and diversity, particularly crude protein for late-season grazing, fourwing saltbush [Atriplex canescens (Pursch.) Nutt.] was planted in an existing stand of crested wheatgrass. Quantification of sheep forage preferences on these improved ranges aids in determining the length of the grazing season and the extent to which shrubs provide the supplemental nutrition required. This seasonal grazing study was conducted on a characteristic wheatgrass-saltbush, mixed-range pasture to determine sheep acceptance of fourwing saltbush when crested wheatgrass was the alternative available forage. Sheep preferences for grass and shrub in spring and winter were similar, averaging 84 percent grass and 16 percent shrub. Summer dietary preferences ranged from 69 percent to 93 percent grass and 7 percent to 31 percent shrub. Preference for fourwing saltbush was consistently lower than crested wheatgrass in all seasons. Sufficient amounts of the mixed pasture were grazed to reduce the need for supplemental feed, when compared to crested wheatgrass monoculture. The results of these grazing trials suggest fourwing saltbush can be useful in improving pasture nutrition for sheep in different grazing seasons.

Disordered Fe70Al30 alloy was measured versus annealing temperature by X-ray diffraction, differential thermal calorimeter, magnetization and Mössbauer spectroscopy. All of them show a critical behaviour around 475 K. The critical behaviour is related to an ordering of the alloy that happens at that temperature linked to a decrease of the magnetic properties of the sample.

Manpower costs were compared using the following models: (1) Moncrief's FY93 average and current primary care staffing; (2) American Hospital Association's (AMA) projected staffing mix using a community demand analysis; (3) The Health Care Management Support Engineering Activity1s Full Time Requirement Utilization Model (FTRUM); (4) Gateway To Care (GTC) Manpower Staffing Assessment Model; and (5) Linear Goal Programming's QSB+ Staffing Model with a managed care family practice emphasis. Each model was compared by the number, mix, and costs associated with staffing Moncrief's Family Practice Plus (FPP) Clinic and the other primary care specialty clinics (Internal Medicine, Gynecology, and Pediatric). A qualitative observational study was also performed to see how closely actual performance of the nurse practitioner (NP) and family practice physicians in FPP met assumptions used in the staffing models., Master's thesis.

The fractionation of military aviation fuels with supercritical methane for purposes of separating multiring heteroaromatic and multiring aromatic compounds was demonstrated. It was shown that fractionated fuel possesses cleaner combustion properties and it is anticipate that fractionated fuel will demonstrate enhanced thermal stability due to the absence of the heterocyclic compounds. Because supercritical fluids fractionate on the basis of solute/solvent interactions it is possible to separate compounds of similar vapor pressure but slightly different chemical natures. Trace quantities of heterocyclic and multiring aromatic compounds, therefore, may be removed without significantly altering the balance of the fuel. Distribution coefficients and selectivities (in methane) were obtained for several heteroaromatic compounds in JP-8, and calculations using this data indicate that a 95% reduction in heteroaromatic content with a 97% yield will be possible in a continuous, counter-current extraction column with an effective separation zone of less than 10 feet operating at ambient temperature and at pressures of less than 3800 psi. Polymeric pre-propellant binders are known to be heterogeneous materials exhibiting significant variation with respect to molecular weight, structure, functionally, and related performance properties. The objective of this program was to demonstrate the feasibility of fractionating propellant binders with supercritical fluid (SCF) solvents. Hydroxy-terminated polybutadiene (HTPB) (R-45M, Atochem North America) was fractionated with supercritical propane yielding ten fractions with number average molecular weights ranging from 780 to 11760 and polydispersities of approximately 1.2. The increase in hydroxyl equivalent weight with nonlinear, with functionality increasing rapidly in the higher molecular weight fractions. Non-functional cyclic and other low molecular weight components were effectively extracted from glycidyl azide polymer (GAP) using supercritical carbon dioxide as evidenced by HPLC analysis.

This study investigated the question Why are fallout shelters not a part of U.S. national defense strategy and policy? Initial research determined that the U.S. has the technology to design and build shelters, they are effective protection from radioactive fallout, and nuclear aggression against the U.S. remains a potential national threat. The research examined the physical threats posed by nuclear weapons, followed by a brief description of fallout shelters and their ability to shield against fallout radiation in terms of the ration of time in shelter to amount of exposure. Several opposing arguments from opponents and proponents of a national fallout shelter program were categorized and expressed within U.S. National Security Strategy, military, economic, and political terms. The principal argument against a national fallout shelter program, including home fallout shelters, is the momentum of over 30 years of successful deterrence. On the other hand, the relatively simple technology, the affordability, and the potential for saving millions of lives in low-risk areas that would otherwise be lost should deterrence fail, argue strongly in favor of a national home fallout shelter system.

En muchos países occidentales se recomienda el enriquecimiento en hierro de algunos alimentos para prevenir su déficit, especialmente en la infancia. En una población de 300 niños (seis meses ¿ dieciséis años) escogidos azar, encontramos 14 que padecían déficit en hierro sin anemia entre seis meses y cuatro años. Fueron diagnosticados deficitarios cuando dos o más de estos parámetros: VCM, PE, CST, FS eran normales. Al cabo de un año, 12 de ellos habían dejado de ser deficitarios- Durante dicho periodo no se produjeron cambios significativos de alimentación en relación al grupo no deficitario. Por tanto, podría dudarse de la necesidad de una campaña de enriquecimiento en hierro generalizada en nuestro país., In order to prevent iron deficiency, especially in children, iron enriched foods are recommended in developed countries. In a random sample of 300 children (aged 6 months – 16 years) 14 children between 0.5 and 4 years were diagnosed as iron deficient but without anaemia. Subjects were considered to present with iron deficiency if they possessed two or more abnormal values of the following biochemical parameters: red cell volume, erythrocyte protoporphyrin concentration, transferrin saturation capacity and serum ferritin. After one year, 12 of the 14 children on reassessment, were considered to be non-deficient in iron- During this period, we observed no statistical differences in dietary intake and growth rate between there iron deficient children and age and sex matched

The roof rat (Rattus rattus) utilizes Algerian ivy and the Himalayan blackberry for food and cover, often living Independent of man. Algerian ivy is the most popular ornamental and ground cover plant in California and is used extensively for landscaping, particularly in southern California. The Himalayan blackberry, inhabited by feral roof rats, grows abundantly in northern California along inland creeks and in pastureland of the Sacramento Valley and in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada. Rats construct platform nests on or within the dense layer of canes that accumulate within the thickets. Information on distribution and recommendations for the control of the roof rat within the blackberry habitat are presented. A potential human plague threat exists where rodent cohabitants of the berry thickets may become involved in epizootics.

A preliminary environmental survey was conducted at Volunteer Army Ammunition Plant (VAAP) from 22 to 29 March 1976. This report includes (1) a presentation of the data compiled from that visit and a thorough literature search of regional sources and (2) a discussion of the actual or potential environmental impact of operations performed at VAAP. Biological data gaps have been indicated and the potential occurrences of rare or endangered species have been discussed and documented where this information is available. (Author)

Aquatic ecological surveys were initiated in the principal drainages from Sunflower Army Ammunition Plant (SAAP), Lawrence, Kansas, and in the Kansas River, Baseline ecological surveys were initiated in the spring of 1975 before the construction of a new nitroguanidine facility at SAAP to establish the present condition of aquatic communities in the receiving stream, and to compare them with conditions after the survey. Sampling consisted of benthic macroinvertebrate collections from up to eight locations and water-quality measurements from seven locations, which are reported here. Macroinvertebrates were collected from rock-filled barbecue baskets (suspended in the Kansas River and attached to the substrates in the creeks), from portable invertebrate box samplers riffles, and from dip-net and hand collections. Fauna from the creeks was predominately riffle beetles, caddisflies, and mayflies; caddisflies and mayflies were the most abundant species in the rock-filled baskets from the river. Blackfly larvae were predominant in Spoon Creek, which had a high organic load from farmland runoff before it entered SAAP. No adverse conditions were observed in temperature, dissolved oxygen, and pH during several days of continuous monitoring. Changes in hardness, turbidity, alkalinity, nutrients, and chloride were directly related to fluctuations in discharge.

This report was written to ascertain what planning, control, and responsibility is nested in functional codes of a Navy Systems Command to provide the means for management of 'less-than-major' projects (as defined by DODD 5000.1) throughout their life cycle. Formal instructions and procedures were examined to determine if the Command's system was adequate to support a project's transition from advanced development (R and D) to engineering development (R and D) or production. Responsibility documents were located, but follow-on procedural instructions had not been written. Interviews with top management highlighted facts which lead to the realization that informal policies were responsible for the manner in which life-cycle project management was being conducted. Recommendations include a request for a formal instruction to institutionalize actions which are now being carried out informally. (Author)

This study examines the distribution of time spent working, the activities performed, and the skill level required by nursing service personnel in the performance of their duties. This study was a subject interpretation that measured both routine and peculiar work activities of each category of personnel, during each tour of duty. The purpose of this study was to identify the amount of time nurses spent involved in non-nursing activities that did not require nursing skills, and the overall effect of that time on patient care.
