RESEARCH QUESTION: Can artificial intelligence (AI) improve the efficiency and efficacy of sperm searches in azoospermic samples? DESIGN: This two-phase proof-of-concept study began with a training phase using eight azoospermic patients (>10,000 sperm images) to provide a variety of surgically collected samples for sperm morphology and debris variation to train a convolutional neural network to identify spermatozoa. Second, side-by-side testing was undertaken on two cohorts of non-obstructive azoospermia patient samples: an embryologist versus the AI identifying all the spermatozoa in the still images (cohort 1, n = 4), and a side-by-side test with a simulated clinical deployment of the AI model with an intracytoplasmic sperm injection microscope and the embryologist performing a search with and without the aid of the AI (cohort 2, n = 4). RESULTS: In cohort 1, the AI model showed an improvement in the time taken to identify all the spermatozoa per field of view (0.02 ± 0.30 × 10-5s versus 36.10 ± 1.18s, P < 0.0001) and improved recall (91.95 ± 0.81% versus 86.52 ± 1.34%, P < 0.001) compared with an embryologist. From a total of 2660 spermatozoa to find in all the samples combined, 1937 were found by an embryologist and 1997 were found by the AI in less than 1000th of the time. In cohort 2, the AI-aided embryologist took significantly less time per droplet (98.90 ± 3.19 s versus 168.7 ± 7.84 s, P < 0.0001) and found 1396 spermatozoa, while 1274 were found without AI, although no significant difference was observed. CONCLUSIONS: AI-powered image analysis has the potential for seamless integration into laboratory workflows, to reduce the time to identify and isolate spermatozoa from surgical sperm samples from hours to minutes, thus increasing success rates from these treatments.

Creativity has always been considered a major differentiator to separate the good from the great, and we believe the importance of creativity for software development will only increase as GenAI becomes embedded in developer tool-chains and working practices. This paper uses the McLuhan tetrad alongside scenarios of how GenAI may disrupt software development more broadly, to identify potential impacts GenAI may have on creativity within software development. The impacts are discussed along with a future research agenda comprising six connected themes that consider how individual capabilities, team capabilities, the product, unintended consequences, society, and human aspects can be affected.

Background: The SARS-CoV-2 pandemic is still ongoing and a major challenge for health care services worldwide. In the first WSES COVID-19 emergency surgery survey, a strong negative impact on emergency surgery (ES) had been described already early in the pandemic situation. However, the knowledge is limited about current effects of the pandemic on patient flow through emergency rooms, daily routine and decision making in ES as well as their changes over time during the last two pandemic years. This second WSES COVID-19 emergency surgery survey investigates the impact of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic on ES during the course of the pandemic. Methods: A web survey had been distributed to medical specialists in ES during a four-week period from January 2022, investigating the impact of the pandemic on patients and septic diseases both requiring ES, structural problems due to the pandemic and time-to-intervention in ES routine. Results: 367 collaborators from 59 countries responded to the survey. The majority indicated that the pandemic still significantly impacts on treatment and outcome of surgical emergency patients (83.1% and 78.5%, respectively). As reasons, the collaborators reported decreased case load in ES (44.7%), but patients presenting with more prolonged and severe diseases, especially concerning perforated appendicitis (62.1%) and diverticulitis (57.5%). Otherwise, approximately 50% of the participants still observe a delay in time-to-intervention in ES compared with the situation before the pandemic. Relevant causes leading to enlarged time-to-intervention in ES during the pandemic are persistent problems with in-hospital logistics, lacks in medical staff as well as operating room and intensive care capacities during the pandemic. This leads not only to the need for triage or transferring of ES patients to other hospitals, reported by 64.0% and 48.8% of the collaborators, respectively, but also to paradigm shifts in treatment modalities to non-operative approach

Background: The objectives of the study were to investigate the organizational characteristics of acute care facilities worldwide in preventing and managing infections in surgery; assess participants’ perception regarding infection prevention and control (IPC) measures, antibiotic prescribing practices, and source control; describe awareness about the global burden of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and IPC measures; and determine the role of the Coronavirus Disease 2019 pandemic on said awareness. Methods: A cross-sectional web-based survey was conducted contacting 1432 health care workers (HCWs) belonging to a mailing list provided by the Global Alliance for Infections in Surgery. The self-administered questionnaire was developed by a multidisciplinary team. The survey was open from May 22, 2021, and June 22, 2021. Three reminders were sent, after 7, 14, and 21 days. Results: Three hundred four respondents from 72 countries returned a questionnaire, with an overall response rate of 21.2%. Respectively, 90.4% and 68.8% of participants stated their hospital had a multidisciplinary IPC team or a multidisciplinary antimicrobial stewardship team. Local protocols for antimicrobial therapy of surgical infections and protocols for surgical antibiotic prophylaxis were present in 76.6% and 90.8% of hospitals, respectively. In 23.4% and 24.0% of hospitals no surveillance systems for surgical site infections and no monitoring systems of used antimicrobials were implemented. Patient and family involvement in IPC management was considered to be slightly or not important in their hospital by the majority of respondents (65.1%). Awareness of the global burden of AMR among HCWs was considered very important or important by 54.6% of participants. Background. Potentially harmful nonhuman leukocyte antigen antibodies have been identified in renal transplantation, including natural immunoglobulin G antibodies (Nabs) reactive to varied antigenic structures, including apoptotic cells. Methods. In this retrospective, multicenter study, we assessed Nabs by reactivity to apoptotic cells in sera collected from 980 kidney transplant recipients across 4 centers to determine their association with graft outcomes. Results. Elevated pretransplant Nabs were associated with graft loss (hazard ratio [HR] 2.71; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.15-6.39; P = 0.0232), the composite endpoint of graft loss or severe graft dysfunction (HR 2.40; 95% CI, 1.13-5.10; P = 0.0232), and T cell-mediated rejection (odds ratio [OR] 1.77; 95% CI, 1.07-3.02; P = 0.0310). High pretransplant Nabs together with donor-specific antibodies (DSAs) were associated with increased risk of composite outcomes (HR 6.31; 95% CI, 1.81-22.0; P = 0.0039). In patients with high pretransplant Nabs, the subsequent development of posttransplant Nabs was associated with both T cell-mediated rejection (OR 3.64; 95% CI, 1.61-8.36; P = 0.0021) and mixed rejection (OR 3.10; 95% CI, 1.02-9.75; P = 0.0473). Finally, elevated pre- and posttransplant Nabs combined with DSAs were associated with increased risk of composite outcomes (HR 3.97; 95% CI, 1.51-10.43; P = 0.0052) and T cell-mediated rejection (OR 7.28; 95% CI, 2.16-25.96; P = 0.0016). Conclusions. The presence of pre- and posttransplant Nabs, together with DSAs, was associated with increased risk of poor graft outcomes and rejection after renal transplantation.

Leadership, along with discipline, ethics, organisational culture and specific socialisation practices, is one of the most important pillars (Brown, Treviño, 2006) of the military profession. As such, professional military leadership is one of the key aspects emphasised at strategic level. One prominent example in this respect is the Romanian Military Strategy of 2021 (2021, pp. 3-4) which views it as one of the means of securing organisational and national resilience in a volatile, complex, and uncertain environment. Furthermore, as the 2020-2024 Romanian National Defence Strategy states (2020, p. 32), resilience is one of the key areas targeted by the NATO-EU cooperation agenda where Romania pledges to contribute. Following the strategic acknowledgment that professional military leadership is needed in order to meet future challenges in the defence and security field, the current article discusses the ways and means by which professional military leadership development can further the end of securing organisational resilience in the defence and security field, and hence that of consolidating national resilience.

The main goal of this paper is to analyze the new theoretical concepts that provide a vision regarding the future armed conflicts, determined by the technological advance and the increased dynamics of the information flows between different levels of authority within modern societies. The paper starts with an analysis of today's international environment (characterized by the existence of competing cultural contexts and political opinions which generate frictions, crisis and eventually military conflict), followed by a comprehensive plea regarding the necessity of changing the current military operating concepts. Finally there are presented two solutions that address the desired conceptual change, which fit the uncertainty of future conflicts: the "Army Operating Concept" developed by the US Army Training and Doctrine Command, and "Future Operating Environment 2035", developed by the UK Concepts and Doctrine Centre's (DCDC).

Sperm selection is an essential component of all assisted reproductive treatments (ARTs) and is by far the most neglected step in the ART workflow in regard to technological innovation. Conventional sperm selection methodologies typically produce a higher total number of sperm with variable motilities, morphologies, and levels of DNA integrity. Gold-standard techniques, including density gradient centrifugation (DGC) and swim-up (SU), have been shown to induce DNA fragmentation through introducing reactive oxygen species (ROS) during centrifugation. Here, we demonstrate a 3D printed, biologically inspired microfluidic sperm selection device (MSSP) that utilizes multiple methods to simulate a sperms journey toward selection. Sperm are first selected based on their motility and boundary-following behavior and then on their expression of apoptotic markers, yielding over 68% more motile sperm than that of previously reported methods with a lower incidence of DNA fragmentation and apoptosis. Sperm from the MSSP also demonstrated higher motile sperm recovery after cryopreservation than that of SU or neat semen. Experiments were conducted side-by-side against conventional SU methods using human semen (n = 33) and showed over an 85% improvement in DNA integrity with an average 90% reduction in sperm apoptosis. These results that the platform is easy-to-use for sperm selection and mimics the biological function of the female reproductive tract during conception.

A novel method for space object identification is proposed, based on full Stokes spectropolarimetry in the visible and near-infrared wavelength range. Space objects that have been previously detected and are illuminated by the sun can be observed with a telescope to simultaneously obtain intensity, spectra, and polarimetry, and compose light curves of these parameters as function of time. The intention is to thus assign a unique identification, or at least a classification to these objects. Single, double, and multiple reflections of sunlight off the space object (natural or artificial objects, including debris) will introduce spectrally dependent polarisation into the scattered light, the spectral signature of which is affected by the complex refractive index of the scattering materials and the geometry. The simultaneous measurement of the full Stokes vector allows separation of the light source unpolarised spectral signatures on the one hand from the polarisation spectral features on the other hand. To illustrate the concept, we have performed a number of simulations for double scattering off a small selection of materials, for a large range of scattering geometries. Examples of individual scattering geometries and statistical summaries of all geometries are presented. The light emitted or reflected by a medium can exhibit a certain degree of polarization. Most of the time, this feature brings valuable information about the environment. However, instruments able to accurately measure any type of polarization are hard to build and adapt to inauspicious environments, such as space. To overcome this problem, we presented recently a design for a compact and steady polarimeter, able to measure the entire Stokes vector in a single shot. The first simulations revealed a very high modulation efficiency of the instrumental matrix for this concept. However, the shape and the content of this matrix can change with the characteristics of the optical system, such as the pixel size, the wavelength or the number of pixels. To assess the quality of the instrumental matrices for different optical characteristics, we analyze here the propagation of errors, together with the impact of different types of noise. The results show that the instrumental matrices are converging towards an optimal shape. The aim of the study is to deep dive into the potential of green entrepreneurship and its drivers in a time of multiple challenges when green growth seeks to reconcile economic and sustainable development goals. The need for responsible business models has become evident in recent years, and companies that offer green products or services are creative, eco-friendly growth incubators and important economic actors that can change the future of society. We used a logistic regression model for 7326 companies from 36 European countries to identify what influences the decision to go green, including supply and demand factors, measures for resource efficiency and targeted policies. We found that the company’s age, its financial performance, the country’s level of development, as well as the incentive measures have a significant potential of stimulating green entrepreneurship. Our results highlight the overwhelming importance of financing. Firms in less developed countries face difficulties in developing green products and services, so support programs are needed to build green entrepreneurship in some regions. Many entrepreneurs in less developed countries are highly educated, creative, and innovative, so they can successfully run sustainable business models if the transfer of good practices is accompanied by an infusion of capital

This study analyzed the variability of equivalent black carbon (eBC) mass concentrations and their sources in urban Europe to provide insights into the use of eBC as an advanced air quality (AQ) parameter for AQ standards. This study compiled eBC mass concentration datasets covering the period between 2006 and 2022 from 50 measurement stations, including 23 urban background (UB), 18 traffic (TR), 7 suburban (SUB), and 2 regional background (RB) sites. The results highlighted the need for the harmonization of eBC measurements to allow for direct comparisons between eBC mass concentrations measured across urban Europe. The eBC mass concentrations exhibited a decreasing trend as follows: TR > UB > SUB > RB. Furthermore, a clear decreasing trend in eBC concentrations was observed in the UB sites moving from Southern to Northern Europe. The eBC mass concentrations exhibited significant spatiotemporal heterogeneity, including marked differences in eBC mass concentration and variable contributions of pollution sources to bulk eBC between different cities. Seasonal patterns in eBC concentrations were also evident, with higher winter concentrations observed in a large proportion of cities, especially at UB and SUB sites. The contribution of eBC from fossil fuel combustion, mostly traffic (eBCT) was higher than that of residential and commercial sources (eBCRC) in all European sites studied. Nevertheless, eBCRC still had a substantial contribution to total eBC mass concentrations at a majority of the sites. eBC trend analysis revealed decreasing trends for eBCT over the last decade, while eBCRC remained relatively constant or even increased slightly in some cities.

Disfluencies (i.e. interruptions in the regular flow of speech), are ubiquitous to spoken discourse. Fillers ("uh", "um") are disfluencies that occur the most frequently compared to other kinds of disfluencies. Yet, to the best of our knowledge, there isn't a resource that brings together the research perspectives influencing Spoken Language Understanding (SLU) on these speech events. This aim of this article is to survey a breadth of perspectives in a holistic way; i.e. from considering underlying (psycho)linguistic theory, to their annotation and consideration in Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) and SLU systems, to lastly, their study from a generation standpoint. Sperm are transcriptionally and translationally quiescent and, therefore, rely on the seminal plasma microenvironment for function, survival and fertilization of the oocyte in the oviduct. The male reproductive system influences sperm function via the binding and fusion of secreted epididymal (epididymosomes) and prostatic (prostasomes) small extracellular vesicles (S-EVs) that facilitate the transfer of proteins, lipids and nucleic acids to sperm. Seminal plasma S-EVs have important roles in sperm maturation, immune and oxidative stress protection, capacitation, fertilization and endometrial implantation and receptivity. Supplementing asthenozoospermic samples with normospermic-derived S-EVs can improve sperm motility and S-EV microRNAs can be used to predict non-obstructive azoospermia. Thus, S-EV influence on sperm physiology might have both therapeutic and diagnostic potential; however, the isolation of pure populations of S-EVs from bodily fluids with current conventional methods presents a substantial hurdle. Many conventional techniques lack accuracy, effectiveness, and practicality; yet microfluidic technology has the potential to simplify and improve S-EV isolation and detection.

Almost no modern software system is written from scratch, and developers are required to effectively learn to use third-party libraries or software services. Thus, many practitioners and researchers have looked for ways to create effective documentation that supports developers' learning. However, few efforts have focused on how people actually use the documentation. In this paper, we report on an exploratory, multi-phase, mixed methods empirical study of documentation page-view logs from four cloud-based industrial services. By analyzing page-view logs for over 100,000 users, we find diverse patterns of documentation page visits. Moreover, we show statistically that which documentation pages people visit often correlates with user characteristics such as past experience with the specific product, on the one hand, and with future adoption of the API on the other hand. We discuss the implications of these results on documentation design and propose documentation page-view log analysis as a feasible technique for design audits of documentation, from ones written for software developers to ones designed to support end users (e.g., Adobe Photoshop).

Understanding code is challenging, especially when working in new and complex development environments. Code comments and documentation can help, but are typically scarce or hard to navigate. Large language models (LLMs) are revolutionizing the process of writing code. Can they do the same for helping understand it? In this study, we provide a first investigation of an LLM-based conversational UI built directly in the IDE that is geared towards code understanding. Our IDE plugin queries OpenAI's GPT-3.5-turbo model with four high-level requests without the user having to write explicit prompts: to explain a highlighted section of code, provide details of API calls used in the code, explain key domain-specific terms, and provide usage examples for an API. The plugin also allows for open-ended prompts, which are automatically contextualized to the LLM with the program being edited. We evaluate this system in a user study with 32 participants, which confirms that using our plugin can aid task completion more than web search. We additionally provide a thorough analysis of the ways developers use, and perceive the usefulness of, our system, among others finding that the usage and benefits differ between students and professionals. We conclude that in-IDE prompt-less interaction with LLMs is a promising future direction for tool builders.

With the growing popularity and availability of sonoelastography as a method to assess the stiffness of different tissues, we considered applying it to congenital clubfeet in order to to determine whether sonoelastography can be a useful imaging method for the evaluation of clubfeet, to assess whether there are any differences in stiffness of specific tendons between clubfeet and normal contralateral feet and to observe which treatment methods have an impact on the aspect of these structures on the elastograms.Patients and Methods: A case-control study was performed involving 10 adolescent patients with unilateral idiopathic congenital clubfeet who were treated either with the Ponseti method or surgically with posteromedial release (PMR) during early infancy. Using compression sonoelastography, we obtained semi-quantitative data expressed as fat to tendon ratios in treated clubfeet and normal contralateral feet. Computational models have great potential to accelerate bioscience, bioengineering, and medicine. However, it remains challenging to reproduce and reuse simulations, in part, because the numerous formats and methods for simulating various subsystems and scales remain siloed by different software tools. For example, each tool must be executed through a distinct interface. To help investigators find and use simulation tools, we developed BioSimulators (https://biosimulators.org), a central registry of the capabilities of simulation tools and consistent Python, command-line and containerized interfaces to each version of each tool. The foundation of BioSimulators is standards, such as CellML, SBML, SED-ML and the COMBINE archive format, and validation tools for simulation projects and simulation tools that ensure these standards are used consistently. To help modelers find tools for particular projects, we have also used the registry to develop recommendation services. We anticipate that BioSimulators will help modelers exchange, reproduce, and combine simulations.

Syftet i studien var att beskriva 9 pedagogers uppfattningar om lek samt deras uppfattningar om sin delaktighet i barns lek. Det är en kvalitativ studie som utförts genom att vi observerade barns lekstunder och pedagogernas förhållningssätt till lek i två olika förskolor. Sedan intervjuade vi pedagoger som arbetar på respektive avdelningarna där observationerna genomförts. Vi valde att intervjua 9 förskolepersonal med olika utbildningsgrunder från två olika förskolor, som består av outbildade barnskötare, barnskötare och förskollärare. Det är för att kunna få en bredare förståelse kring undersökningsområdet. Vår studie har det sociokulturella perspektivet som utgångspunkt och tar även stöd av Vygotskijs lekteorier. Resultatet i vår studie visar att pedagogerna ser lek som en viktig del av förskoleverksamheten och att pedagogernas roll och närvaro är viktigt för barns lek och deras utveckling. In the literature concerning Byzantium usually the historical phenomena are analysed as they took place along the Eastern-Western axis of its territory. What my paper proposes is an alternative to this approach. Because of the need to circulate goods between the Mediterranean and the North Sea, roads were constructed to connect the two, and along these both merchandises (textiles, metal objects, etc.) and cultural items as manuscripts, ivory for book covers, pigments for painting, etc. were transported. The same thoroughfares and points of connection within a large network were used for religious purposes and by the military. I adduce testimonies to make a strong argument that the division ‘North-South’ within the Empire was as important as that ‘East-West’., En la literatura sobre Bizancio se suelen analizar los fenómenos históricos tal como se produjeron a lo largo del eje Este-Oeste de su territorio. We derive a set of causal deep neural networks whose architectures are a consequence of tensor (multilinear) factor analysis. Forward causal questions are addressed with a neural network architecture composed of causal capsules and a tensor transformer. The former estimate a set of latent variables that represent the causal factors, and the latter governs their interaction. Causal capsules and tensor transformers may be implemented using shallow autoencoders, but for a scalable architecture we employ block algebra and derive a deep neural network composed of a hierarchy of autoencoders. An interleaved kernel hierarchy preprocesses the data resulting in a hierarchy of kernel tensor factor models. Inverse causal questions are addressed with a neural network that implements multilinear projection and estimates the causes of effects. As an alternative to aggressive bottleneck dimension reduction or regularized regression that may camouflage an inherently underdetermined inverse problem, we prescribe modeling different aspects of the mechanism of data formation with piecewise tensor models whose multilinear projections are well-defined and produce multiple candidate solutions. Microbial populations play a crucial role in human health and the development of many diseases. These diseases often arise from the explosive proliferation of opportunistic bacteria, such as those in the nasal cavity. Recently, there have been increases in the prevalence of these opportunistic pathogens displaying antibiotic resistance. Thus, the study of the nasal microbiota and its bacterial diversity is critical in understanding pathogenesis and developing microbial-based therapies for well-known and emerging diseases. However, the isolation and analysis of these populations for clinical study complicates the already challenging task of identifying and profiling potentially harmful bacteria. Existing methods are limited by low sample throughput, expensive labeling, and low recovery of bacteria with ineffective removal of cells and debris. In this study, we propose a novel microfluidic channel with a zigzag configuration for enhanced isolation and detection of bacteria from human clinical nasal swabs. This microfluidic zigzag channel separates the bacteria from epithelial cells and debris by size differential focusing. As such, pure bacterial cell fractions devoid of large contaminating debris or epithelial cells are obtained. DNA sequencing performed on the separated bacteria defines the diversity and species present. This novel method of bacterial separation is simple, robust, rapid, and cost-effective and has the potential to be used for the rapid identification of bacterial cell populations from clinical samples.

Prostate cancer (PCa) diagnosis is primarily based on prostate-specific antigen (PSA) testing and prostate tissue biopsies. However, PSA testing has relatively low specificity, while tissue biopsies are highly invasive and have relatively low sensitivity at early stages of PCa. As an alternative, we developed a technique of liquid biopsy, based on isolation of circulating tumor cells (CTCs) from seminal fluid (SF). The recovery of PCa cells from SF was demonstrated using PCa cell lines, achieving an efficiency and throughput as high as 89% (±3.8%) and 1.7 mL min-1, respectively, while 99% (±0.7%) of sperm cells were disposed of. The introduced approach was further tested in a clinical setting by collecting and processing SF samples of PCa patients. The yield of isolated CTCs measured as high as 613 cells per SF sample in comparison with that of 6 cells from SF of healthy donors, holding significant promise for PCa diagnosis. The correlation analysis of the isolated CTC numbers with the standard prognostic parameters such as Gleason score and PSA serum level showed correlation coefficient values at 0.40 and 0.73, respectively. Taken together, our results show promise in the developed liquid biopsy technique to augment the existing diagnosis and prognosis of PCa.

Organic aerosol (OA) is a key component of total submicron particulate matter (PM1), and comprehensive knowledge of OA sources across Europe is crucial to mitigate PM1 levels. Europe has a well-established air quality research infrastructure from which yearlong datasets using 21 aerosol chemical speciation monitors (ACSMs) and 1 aerosol mass spectrometer (AMS) were gathered during 2013-2019. It includes 9 non-urban and 13 urban sites. This study developed a state-of-the-art source apportionment protocol to analyse long-term OA mass spectrum data by applying the most advanced source apportionment strategies (i.e., rolling PMF, ME-2, and bootstrap). This harmonised protocol was followed strictly for all 22 datasets, making the source apportionment results more comparable. In addition, it enables quantification of the most common OA components such as hydrocarbon-like OA (HOA), biomass burning OA (BBOA), cooking-like OA (COA), more oxidised-oxygenated OA (MO-OOA), and less oxidised-oxygenated OA (LO-OOA). Other components such as coal combustion OA (CCOA), solid fuel OA (SFOA: mainly mixture of coal and peat combustion), cigarette smoke OA (CSOA), sea salt (mostly inorganic but part of the OA mass spectrum), coffee OA, and ship industry OA could also be separated at a few specific sites. Oxygenated OA (OOA) components make up most of the submicron OA mass (average = 71.1%, range from 43.7 to 100%). Solid fuel combustion-related OA components (i.e., BBOA, CCOA, and SFOA) are still considerable with in total 16.0% yearly contribution to the OA, yet mainly during winter months (21.4%). Overall, this comprehensive protocol works effectively across all sites governed by different sources and generates robust and consistent source apportionment results. Particulate matter (PM) has become a major concern in terms of human health and climate impact. In particular, the source apportionment (SA) of organic aerosols (OA) present in submicron particles (PM1) has gained relevance as an atmospheric research field due to the diversity and complexity of its primary sources and secondary formation processes. Moreover, relatively simple but robust instruments such as the Aerosol Chemical Speciation Monitor (ACSM) are now widely available for the near-real-time online determination of the composition of the non-refractory PM1. One of the most used tools for SA purposes is the source-receptor positive matrix factorisation (PMF) model. Even though the recently developed rolling PMF technique has already been used for OA SA on ACSM datasets, no study has assessed its added value compared to the more common seasonal PMF method using a practical approach yet. In this paper, both techniques were applied to a synthetic dataset and to nine European ACSM datasets in order to spot the main output discrepancies between methods. The main advantage of the synthetic dataset approach was that the methods' outputs could be compared to the expected "true"values, i.e. the original synthetic dataset values. This approach revealed similar apportionment results amongst methods, although the rolling PMF profile's adaptability feature proved to be advantageous, as it generated output profiles that moved nearer to the truth points. Nevertheless, these results highlighted the impact of the profile anchor on the solution, as the use of a different anchor with respect to the truth led to significantly different results in both methods. Background: The objectives of the study were to investigate the organizational characteristics of acute care facilities worldwide in preventing and managing infections in surgery; assess participants’ perception regarding infection prevention and control (IPC) measures, antibiotic prescribing practices, and source control; describe awareness about the global burden of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and IPC measures; and determine the role of the Coronavirus Disease 2019 pandemic on said awareness. Methods: A cross-sectional web-based survey was conducted contacting 1432 health care workers (HCWs) belonging to a mailing list provided by the Global Alliance for Infections in Surgery. The self-administered questionnaire was developed by a multidisciplinary team. The survey was open from May 22, 2021, and June 22, 2021. Three reminders were sent, after 7, 14, and 21 days. Results: Three hundred four respondents from 72 countries returned a questionnaire, with an overall response rate of 21.2%. Respectively, 90.4% and 68.8% of participants stated their hospital had a multidisciplinary IPC team or a multidisciplinary antimicrobial stewardship team. Local protocols for antimicrobial therapy of surgical infections and protocols for surgical antibiotic prophylaxis were present in 76.6% and 90.8% of hospitals, respectively. In 23.4% and 24.0% of hospitals no surveillance systems for surgical site infections and no monitoring systems of used antimicrobials were implemented. Patient and family involvement in IPC management was considered to be slightly or not important in their hospital by the majority of respondents (65.1%). Awareness of the global burden of AMR among HCWs was considered very important or important by 54.6% of participants. Background: Timing and adequacy of peritoneal source control are the most important pillars in the management of patients with acute peritonitis. Therefore, early prognostic evaluation of acute peritonitis is paramount to assess the severity and establish a prompt and appropriate treatment. The objectives of this study were to identify clinical and laboratory predictors for in-hospital mortality in patients with acute peritonitis and to develop a warning score system, based on easily recognizable and assessable variables, globally accepted. Methods: This worldwide multicentre observational study included 153 surgical departments across 56 countries over a 4-month study period between February 1, 2018, and May 31, 2018. Results: A total of 3137 patients were included, with 1815 (57.9%) men and 1322 (42.1%) women, with a median age of 47 years (interquartile range [IQR] 28-66). The overall in-hospital mortality rate was 8.9%, with a median length of stay of 6 days (IQR 4-10). Using multivariable logistic regression, independent variables associated with in-hospital mortality were identified: age > 80 years, malignancy, severe cardiovascular disease, severe chronic kidney disease, respiratory rate ≥ 22 breaths/min, systolic blood pressure < 100 mmHg, AVPU responsiveness scale (voice and unresponsive), blood oxygen saturation level (SpO2) < 90% in air, platelet count < 50,000 cells/mm3, and lactate > 4 mmol/l. These variables were used to create the PIPAS Severity Score, a bedside early warning score for patients with acute peritonitis. The overall mortality was 2.9% for patients who had scores of 0-1, 22.7% for those who had scores of 2-3, 46.8% for those who had scores of 4-5, and 86.7% for those who have scores of 7-8. Conclusions: The simple PIPAS Severity Score can be used on a global level and can help clinicians to identify patients at high risk for treatment failure and mortality.

Ésta fue fundada en el 2014 aunque tuvo un receso en su actividad comercial en los años 2016 y 2017, posteriormente se reactivó en el 2018. En la actualidad, cuenta con 3 propietarias, el patrimonio inicial de la compañía fue de $3.000.00 con lo cual se constituyó, su valor patrimonial a cierre 2019 fue de aproximadamente $20.000.000. The isolation of sperm cells from background cell populations and debris is an essential step in all assisted reproductive technologies. Conventional techniques for sperm recovery from testicular sperm extractions stagnate at the sample processing stage, where it can take several hours to identify viable sperm from a background of collateral cells such as white bloods cells (WBCs), red blood cells (RBCs), epithelial cells (ECs) and in some cases cancer cells. Manual identification of sperm from contaminating cells and debris is a tedious and time-consuming operation that can be suitably addressed through inertial microfluidics. Microfluidics has proven an effective technology for high-quality sperm selection based on motility. However, motility-based selection methods cannot cater for viable, non-motile sperm often present in testicular or epididymal sperm extractions and aspirations. This study demonstrates the use of a 3D printed inertial microfluidic device for the separation of sperm cells from a mixed suspension of WBCs, RBCs, ECs, and leukemic cancer cells. This technology presents a 36-fold time improvement for the recovery of sperm cells (> 96%) by separating sperm, RBCS, WBCs, ECs and cancer cells into tight bands in less than 5 min. Furthermore, microfluidic processing of sperm has no impact on sperm parameters; vitality, motility, morphology, or DNA fragmentation of sperm. Applying inertial microfluidics for non-motile sperm recovery can greatly improve the current processing procedure of testicular sperm extractions, simplifying the fertility outcomes for severe forms of male infertility that warrant the surgery.

The new technologies, the digitalisation of processes and automation of work will change the manner of doing business, working and living. The effects of digitalisation on the economy, society and quality of life imply significant challenges of the labour market. All the participants will be concerned: authorities, companies and ordinary people. The objective of this research is to analyse the perceptions of the EU citizens about digitalisation and to highlight the differences among specific socio-demographic groups. The analysis is grounded on a composite methodology, comprising several statistical and econometric methods that provide scientific support to achieved conclusions: statistical analysis (with the primary goal to shed light on the EU citizens' perceptions about their digital technology skills), TwoStep Cluster Analysis (TSCA) (with the purpose to identify the ‘digital vulnerable groups’ and then the ‘digital vulnerable countries’ in terms of the exposure to digital divide) and logistic regression (with the main aim to quantify the impact of the relevant factors on citizens’ perceptions about digitalisation). We identified a group of respondents evaluating themselves as having meagre digital skills, very afraid that robots could steal their jobs and with low usage of the internet. They are elderly, with a low level of education, manual workers or not working, with a relatively low level of income and little Internet use. The originality of our approach is given by the fact that we focused on investigating if digital divide leads to the creation of vulnerable groups (citizens and/or countries) and if there are specific patterns in terms of the perception on being skilled in the use of digital technologies in daily life or at work and of the understanding that robots replace human on the labour market. In this study we examine phonetic variation of discourse markers in French, using for this purpose the 4-hour richly annotated LOCAS-F corpus. Both linguistic factors and stylistic variables are considered: speech style, part-of-speech category, mean phone duration and vowel formant distributions with respect to the word status. The results show that the use of discourse markers increases with the degree of spontaneity of the speech. Coordinating conjunctions are the part-of-speech which is most frequently used as discourse markers. Moreover, the mean phone duration tends to be shorter and the vowel space more centralized when words are employed as discourse markers, suggesting that discourse markers undergo hypoarticulation and, more generally, reduction.

Variable names are critical for conveying intended program behavior. Machine learning-based program analysis methods use variable name representations for a wide range of tasks, such as suggesting new variable names and bug detection. Ideally, such methods could capture semantic relationships between names beyond syntactic similarity, e.g., the fact that the names average and mean are similar. Unfortunately, previous work has found that even the best of previous representation approaches primarily capture relatedness (whether two variables are linked at all), rather than similarity (whether they actually have the same meaning). We propose VarCLR, a new approach for learning semantic representations of variable names that effectively captures variable similarity in this stricter sense. We observe that this problem is an excellent fit for contrastive learning, which aims to minimize the distance between explicitly similar inputs, while maximizing the distance between dissimilar inputs. This requires labeled training data, and thus we construct a novel, weakly-supervised variable renaming dataset mined from GitHub edits. We show that VarCLR enables the effective application of sophisticated, general-purpose language models like BERT, to variable name representation and thus also to related downstream tasks like variable name similarity search or spelling correction. VarCLR produces models that significantly outperform the state-of-the-art on IdBench, an existing benchmark that explicitly captures variable similarity (as distinct from relatedness). Finally, we contribute a release of all data, code, and pre-trained models, aiming to provide a drop-in replacement for variable representations used in either existing or future program analyses that rely on variable names., Comment: Accepted by ICSE 2022

International literature shows that both the prison system and the probation system are androcentric. Studies carried out from a gender perspective in other countries and international standards highlight the importance of analyse the similarities and differences between male and female offenders and their impact on the sentences served. In our country, despite the fact that there is a great body of research analysing gender in prison, there are no studies that do the same in the probation system. This paper aims to find out whether there are gender differences among the population sentenced to community sentences and their impact on the community sentences. To this end, a bivariate analysis is carried out on a representative sample of 580 women and men who completed a community sentence. This analysis was carried out to study the relationship between gender and socio-demographic and procedural-criminal variables. The results indicate that there are significant differences by gender., Los estudios realizados desde una perspectiva de género en otros países y la normativa internacional subrayan la importancia de (re)conocer las similitudes y diferencias existentes entre mujeres y hombres penados y su impacto en la ejecución de las penas. En España, a pesar de disponer de numerosas investigaciones que analizan el género en prisión, carecemos de estudios que hagan lo mismo en el sistema de medidas penales alternativas. El presente trabajo pretende conocer si existen diferencias entre las mujeres y los hombres penados a medidas penales alternativas. Para ello, se lleva a cabo un análisis bivariado que estudia la relación del sexo con variables sociodemográficas, personales, procesal-penales correspondientes a las medidas penales alternativas impuestas sobre una muestra representativa de 580 mujeres y hombres que finalizaron una medida alternativa. Los resultados señalan que existen diferencias por sexo significativas entre las diferentes variables analizadas.

Generative neural network architectures such as GANs, may be used to generate synthetic instances to compensate for the lack of real data. However, they may be employed to create media that may cause social, political or economical upheaval. One emerging media is "Deepfake".Techniques that can discriminate between such media is indispensable. In this paper, we propose a modified multilinear (tensor) method, a combination of linear and multilinear regressions for representing fake and real data. We test our approach by representing Deepfakes with our modified multilinear (tensor) approach and perform SVM classification with encouraging results.

A common tool used by security professionals for reverse-engineering binaries found in the wild is the decompiler. A decompiler attempts to reverse compilation, transforming a binary to a higher-level language such as C. High-level languages ease reasoning about programs by providing useful abstractions such as loops, typed variables, and comments, but these abstractions are lost during compilation. Decompilers are able to deterministically reconstruct structural properties of code, but comments, variable names, and custom variable types are technically impossible to recover. In this paper we present DIRTY (DecompIled variable ReTYper), a novel technique for improving the quality of decompiler output that automatically generates meaningful variable names and types. Empirical evaluation on a novel dataset of C code mined from GitHub shows that DIRTY outperforms prior work approaches by a sizable margin, recovering the original names written by developers 66.4% of the time and the original types 75.8% of the time., Comment: 17 pages to be published in USENIX Security '22

By adhering to the dictum, "No causation without manipulation (treatment, intervention)", cause and effect data analysis represents changes in observed data in terms of changes in the causal factors. When causal factors are not amenable for active manipulation in the real world due to current technological limitations or ethical considerations, a counterfactual approach performs an intervention on the model of data formation. In the case of object representation or activity (temporal object) representation, varying object parts is generally unfeasible whether they be spatial and/or temporal. Multilinear algebra, the algebra of higher-order tensors, is a suitable and transparent framework for disentangling the causal factors of data formation. Learning a part-based intrinsic causal factor representations in a multilinear framework requires applying a set of interventions on a part-based multilinear model. We propose a unified multilinear model of wholes and parts. We derive a hierarchical block multilinear factorization, the M-mode Block SVD, that computes a disentangled representation of the causal factors by optimizing simultaneously across the entire object hierarchy. Given computational efficiency considerations, we introduce an incremental bottom-up computational alternative, the Incremental M-mode Block SVD, that employs the lower-level abstractions, the part representations, to represent the higher level of abstractions, the parent wholes. This incremental computational approach may also be employed to update the causal model parameters when data becomes available incrementally. The resulting object representation is an interpretable combinatorial choice of intrinsic causal factor representations related to an object's recursive hierarchy of wholes and parts that renders object recognition robust to occlusion and reduces training data requirements., Comment: arXiv admin note: text overlap with arXiv:1911.04180

A great part of software development involves conceptualizing or communicating the underlying procedures and logic that needs to be expressed in programs. One major difficulty of programming is turning concept into code, especially when dealing with the APIs of unfamiliar libraries. Recently, there has been a proliferation of machine learning methods for code generation and retrieval from natural language queries, but these have primarily been evaluated purely based on retrieval accuracy or overlap of generated code with developer-written code, and the actual effect of these methods on the developer workflow is surprisingly unattested. We perform the first comprehensive investigation of the promise and challenges of using such technology inside the IDE, asking "at the current state of technology does it improve developer productivity or accuracy, how does it affect the developer experience, and what are the remaining gaps and challenges?" We first develop a plugin for the IDE that implements a hybrid of code generation and code retrieval functionality, and orchestrate virtual environments to enable collection of many user events. We ask developers with various backgrounds to complete 14 Python programming tasks ranging from basic file manipulation to machine learning or data visualization, with or without the help of the plugin. While qualitative surveys of developer experience are largely positive, quantitative results with regards to increased productivity, code quality, or program correctness are inconclusive. Analysis identifies several pain points that could improve the effectiveness of future machine learning based code generation/retrieval developer assistants, and demonstrates when developers prefer code generation over code retrieval and vice versa. Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) is a fibrotic disease showing the histology of usual interstitial pneumonia (UIP). While the pathologist's visual inspection is central in histological assessments, three-dimensional microCT assessment may complement pathologist's scoring. This study examined associations between the histopathological features of UIP/IPF in explanted lungs and quantitative microCT measurements including alveolar surface density, total lung volume taken up by tissue (tissue%), and terminal bronchiolar number. Sixty frozen samples from 10 air-inflated explanted lungs with severe IPF and 36 samples from 6 donor control lungs were scanned with microCT and processed for histology. An experienced pathologist scored 3 major UIP criteria (patchy fibrosis, honeycomb, and fibroblastic foci), 5 additional pathological changes such as emphysema, and immunohistochemical staining for CD68, CD4, CD8, and CD79a positive cells, graded on a 0-3+ scale. The alveolar surface density and terminal bronchiolar number decreased and the tissue% increased in IPF compared to controls. In lungs with IPF, lower alveolar surface density and higher tissue% were correlated with greater scores of patchy fibrosis, fibroblastic foci, honeycomb, CD79a-positive cells, and lymphoid follicles. A decreased number of terminal bronchioles was correlated with honeycomb score, but not with the other scores. The three-dimensional microCT measurements reflect the pathological UIP/IPF criteria and further suggest that the reduction in the terminal bronchioles may be associated with honeycomb cyst formation.

El objetivo general del presente estudio consistió en evaluar la creación de una unidad de negocios para el Grupo Agroindustrial Riopaila Castilla, dedicada a la prestación del servicio de maquinaria agrícola, que surge de una situación considerada problema, puesto que el escenario del mercado actual para los servicios de maquinaria en el sector cañicultor es deficitario en oferta. Ante este hecho se propuso este proyecto que abarca los antecedentes del estudio, en lo que se refiere al conocimiento del contexto externo e interno que justifica la realización del presente plan de negocio; también se realizó el análisis del mercado apoyado en un trabajo de campo que corresponde a encuestas y entrevistas aplicadas a los clientes internos y externos, cuyos resultados permitieron formular las estrategias de mercadeo; luego se realizó el estudio técnico donde se define el proceso, la localización y los costos de operación, entre otros; posteriormente se define el modelo de negocios basado en tres estrategias: de reposición de activos, de efectividad y eficiencia operativa y comercial. Se finaliza con el estudio financiero que arrojó resultados positivos, lo que indica que el proyecto es viable desde esta óptica también al obtener una TIR de 16%.

The adoption of Continuous Integration (CI) has been shown multiple benefits for software engineering practices related to build, test and dependency management. However, the impact of CI on the social aspects of software development has been overlooked so far. Specifically, we focus on studying the impact of CI on a paradigmatic socio-technical activity within the software engineering domain, namely code reviews. Indeed, one might expect that the introduction of CI allows reviewers to focus on more challenging aspects of software quality that could not be assessed using CI. To assess validity of this expectation we conduct an exploratory study of code reviews in 685 GitHub projects that have adopted Travis-CI, the most popular CI-service on GitHub. We observe that with the introduction of CI, pull requests are being discussed less. This decrease in amount of discussion, however, cannot be explained by the decrease in the number of updates of the pull requests. This means that in presence of CI developers perform the same amount of work by communicating less, giving rise to the idea of CI as a silent helper.

Background: Multitasking is usual in software development. It is the ability to stop working on a task, switch to another, and return eventually to the first one, as needed or as scheduled. Multitasking, however, comes at a cognitive cost: frequent context-switches can lead to distraction, sub-standard work, and even greater stress. Aims: This paper reports a replication experiment where we gathered data on a group of developers from a software development company from industry on a large collection of projects stored in GitLab repositories. Method: We reused the developed models and methods from the original study for measuring the rate and breadth of a developers' context-switching behavior, and we study how context-switching affects their productivity. We applied semi-structured interviews, replacing the original survey, to some of the developers to understand the reasons for and perceptions of multitasking. Results: We found out that industry developers multitask as much as OSS developers focusing more (on fewer projects), and working more repetitively from one day to the next is associated with higher productivity, but there is no effect for higher multitasking. Some commons reasons make them multitask: dependencies, personal interests, and social relationships. Conclusions: Short context change, less than three minutes, did not impact results from industry developers; however, more than that, it brings a feeling of left the previous tasks behind. So, it is proportional to how much context is switched: as bigger the context and bigger the interruption, it is worst to come back.

Open-domain code generation aims to generate code in a general-purpose programming language (such as Python) from natural language (NL) intents. Motivated by the intuition that developers usually retrieve resources on the web when writing code, we explore the effectiveness of incorporating two varieties of external knowledge into NL-to-code generation: automatically mined NL-code pairs from the online programming QA forum StackOverflow and programming language API documentation. Our evaluations show that combining the two sources with data augmentation and retrieval-based data re-sampling improves the current state-of-the-art by up to 2.2% absolute BLEU score on the code generation testbed CoNaLa. Background: Bots help automate many of the tasks performed by software developers and are widely used to commit code in various social coding platforms. At present, it is not clear what types of activities these bots perform and understanding it may help design better bots, and find application areas which might benefit from bot adoption. Aim: We aim to categorize the Bot Commits by the type of change (files added, deleted, or modified), find the more commonly changed file types, and identify the groups of file types that tend to get updated together. Method: 12,326,137 commits made by 461 popular bots (that made at least 1000 commits) were examined to identify the frequency and the type of files added/ deleted/ modified by the commits, and association rule mining was used to identify the types of files modified together. Result: Majority of the bot commits modify an existing file, a few of them add new files, while deletion of a file is very rare. Commits involving more than one type of operation are even rarer. Files containing data, configuration, and documentation are most frequently updated, while HTML is the most common type in terms of the number of files added, deleted, and modified. Files of the type "Markdown", "Ignore List", "YAML", "JSON" were the types that are updated together with other types of files most frequently. Conclusion: We observe that majority of bot commits involve single file modifications, and bots primarily work with data, configuration, and documentation files. A better understanding if this is a limitation of the bots and, if overcome, would lead to different kinds of bots remains an open question.

Background: Some developer activity traditionally performed manually, such as making code commits, opening, managing, or closing issues is increasingly subject to automation in many OSS projects. Specifically, such activity is often performed by tools that react to events or run at specific times. We refer to such automation tools as bots and, in many software mining scenarios related to developer productivity or code quality it is desirable to identify bots in order to separate their actions from actions of individuals. Aim: Find an automated way of identifying bots and code committed by these bots, and to characterize the types of bots based on their activity patterns. Method and Result: We propose BIMAN, a systematic approach to detect bots using author names, commit messages, files modified by the commit, and projects associated with the ommits. For our test data, the value for AUC-ROC was 0.9. We also characterized these bots based on the time patterns of their code commits and the types of files modified, and found that they primarily work with documentation files and web pages, and these files are most prevalent in HTML and JavaScript ecosystems.
