The transition from planktonic to biofilm growth in bacteria is often accompanied by greater resistance to antibiotics and other stressors, as well as distinct alterations in physical traits, genetic activity, and metabolic restructuring. In many species, the heme nitric oxide/oxygen binding proteins (H-NOX) play an important role in this process, although the signaling mechanisms and pathways in which they participate are quite diverse and largely unknown. In Paracoccus denitrificans, deletion of the hnoxgene results in a severe biofilm-deficient phenotype. Quantitative proteomics was used to assemble a comprehensive data set of P. denitrificansproteins showing altered abundance of those involved in several important metabolic pathways. Further, decreased levels of pyruvate and elevated levels of C16homoserine lactone were detected for the Δhnoxstrain, associating the biofilm deficiency with altered central carbon metabolism and quorum sensing, respectively. These results expand our knowledge of the important role of H-NOX signaling in biofilm formation.

Objective: Based on programs implemented in 2011–2013 in three Canadian provinces to improve the support paramedics provide to people receiving palliative care, the Canadian Partnership Against Cancer and Healthcare Excellence Canada provided support and funding from 2018 to 2022 to spread this approach in Canada. The study objectives were to conduct an economic evaluation of “the Program” compared to the status quo. Methods: A probabilistic decision analytic model was used to compare the expected costs, the quality-adjusted life years (QALYs) and the return on investment associated with the Program compared to the status quo from a publicly funded healthcare payer perspective. Effectiveness data and Program costs, expressed in 2022 Canadian dollars, from each jurisdiction were supplemented with literature data. Probabilistic sensitivity analyses varying key model assumptions were conducted. Results: Analyses of 5416 9-1-1 calls from five jurisdictions where paramedics provided support to people with palliative care needs between April 1, 2020 and March 31, 2022 indicated that 60% of the 9-1-1 calls under the Program enabled people to avoid transport to the emergency department and receive palliative care at home. Treating people at home saved paramedics an average of 31 min (range from 15 to 67). The Program was associated with cost savings of $2773 (95% confidence interval [CI] $1539–$4352) and an additional 0.00069 QALYs (95% CI 0.00024–0.00137) per 9-1-1 palliative care call. The Program return on investment was $4.6 for every $1 invested. Threshold analyses indicated that in order to be cost saving, 33% of 9-1-1 calls should be treated at home under the Program, the Program should generate a minimum of 97 calls per year with each call costing no more than $2773. Conclusion: The Program was cost-effective in the majority of the scenarios examined. These results support the implementation of paramedic-based palliative care at home programs in Canada.

Deep eutectic solvents (DESs) are low-melting mixtures, often prepared from a salt and a molecular hydrogen bond donor. Like ionic liquids, DESs that contain at least one sufficiently amphiphilic component can form bicontinuous nanostructures consisting of polar and nonpolar domains, although this has not been widely explored for many DES combinations. Here, the bulk nanostructures of DESs comprising tetraalkylammonium bromide salts (tetrabutylammonium bromide, tetraoctylammonium bromide, and methyltrioctylammonium bromide) with alkanols and alkanoic acids of systematically varied chain lengths (C2, C6, C8, and C10) as hydrogen bond donors have been studied. Small-angle X-ray scattering techniques were used to identify the relationship between the alkyl chain length and functionality of the hydrogen bond donor on the nature of the amphiphilic nanostructures formed. These findings demonstrated that the amphiphilic nanostructures of the DESs were not affected by the functional group on the hydrogen bond donor, with these nanostructures influenced primarily by both the absolute and relative alkyl chain lengths of the salt and hydrogen bond donor.

Background Patients with necrotizing soft tissue infection undergo an average of 4-5 debridements per hospital admission. Optimal timing for initial debridement is emergent. Second debridement is universally recommended to occur within 24 hours of the first, but no studies have successfully evaluated this time frame. Prior work has suggested that delays in second debridement are associated with increased mortality, and that few patients receive second debridement within 24 hours.Methods We performed a retrospective cohort study at a single center from 01/01/08 to 09/01/2021. The explanatory variable was whether the subject received second debridement within 24 hours of initial debridement. The primary outcome was in-hospital mortality. Baseline characteristics were collected. Subjects were stratified into 2 groups by time between first and second debridement: <24 and ≥24 hours. Variables were compared using Fisher’s exact and Wilcoxon rank-sum tests.Results 77 patients met inclusion criteria. The median overall time to second debridement was 40 hours. 12 subjects received second debridement within 24 hours (15.6%). There was no difference in in-hospital mortality between the <24 (n = 3, 25.0%) and ≥24-hour second debridement groups (n = 4, 6.2%; P= .07). The 2 groups did not differ by secondary outcomes, including total number of debridements, ICU LOS, or wound closure.Conclusion No difference in mortality was observed between subjects undergoing second debridement within 24 vs after 24 hours. Only 16% of subjects received second debridement within the recommended 24-hour time interval. Further study is required to identify the optimal timing of second debridement.

Objective: With the increased adoption of robotic pancreaticoduodenectomy, the effects of unplanned conversions to an ‘open’ operation are ill-defined. This study aims to describe the impact of unplanned conversions of robotic pancreaticoduodenectomy on short-term outcomes and suggest a stepwise approach for safe unplanned conversions during robotic pancreaticoduodenectomy. Methods: This is an analysis of 400 consecutive patients undergoing robotic pancreaticoduodenectomy in a single high-volume institution. Data are presented as median (mean ± SD), and significance is accepted with 95% probability. Results: Between November 2012 and February 2023, 184 (46%) women and 216 (54%) men, aged 70 (68 ± 11.0) years, underwent a robotic pancreaticoduodenectomy. Unplanned conversions occurred in 42 (10.5%) patients; 18 (5%) were converted due to unanticipated vascular involvement, 13 (3%) due to failure to obtain definitive control of bleeding, and 11 (3%) due to visceral obesity. Men were more likely to require a conversion than women (29 vs. 13, p= 0.05). Conversions were associated with shorter operative time (376 (323 ± 182.2) vs. 434 (441 ± 98.7) min, p&lt; 0.0001) but higher estimated blood loss (675 (1010 ± 1168.1) vs. 150 (196 ± 176.8) mL, p&lt; 0.0001). Patients that required an unplanned conversion had higher rates of complications with Clavien–Dindo scores of   III-V (31% vs. 12%, p= 0.003), longer length of stay (8 (11 ± 11.6) vs. 5 (7 ± 6.2), p= 0.0005), longer ICU length of stay (1 (2 ± 5.1) vs. 0 (0 ± 1.3), p&lt; 0.0001) and higher mortality rates (21% vs. 4%, p= 0.0001). The conversion rate significantly decreased over time (p&lt; 0.0001). Conclusions: Unplanned conversions of robotic pancreaticoduodenectomy significantly and negatively affect short-term outcomes, including postoperative mortality. Men were more likely to require a conversion than women. The unplanned conversions rates significantly decreased over time, implying that increased proficiency and patient selection may prevent unplanned conversions. An unplanned conversion should be undertaken in an organized stepwise approach to maximize patient safety.

This study investigates the relationship between circulation patterns and austral summer temperature anomalies in southern Africa. The results show that the formation of continental lows tends to increase the thickness of the lower atmosphere. Further, the distinct variabilities of high and low pressure under the circulation types, influence air mass advection from the adjacent oceans, as well as atmospheric stability over land. Stronger anticyclonic circulation at the western branch of the Mascarene high-pressure system enhances the low-level cold air advection by southeast winds, decreases the thickness, and lowers the temperature over a majority of the land in southern Africa. Conversely, a weaker Mascarene High, coupled with enhanced cyclonic activity in the southwest Indian Ocean increases low-level warm air advection and increases temperature anomalies over vast regions in southern Africa. The ridging of a closed South Atlantic anticyclone at the southern coast of southern Africa results in colder temperatures near the tip of southern Africa due to enhanced low-level cold air advection by southeast winds. However, when the ridge is weak and westerly winds dominate the southern coast of southern Africa, these areas experience temperature increases. The northward track of the Southern Hemisphere mid-latitude cyclone, which can be linked to the negative Southern Annular Mode, reduces the temperature in the southwestern part of southern Africa. Also, during the analysis period, El Niño was associated with temperature increases over the central parts of southern Africa; while the positive Indian Ocean dipole was linked to a temperature increase over the northeastern, northwestern, and southwestern parts of southern Africa.

The protein tau misfolds into disease-specific fibrillar structures in more than 20 neurodegenerative diseases collectively referred to as tauopathies. To understand and prevent disease-specific mechanisms of filament formation, in vitromodels for aggregation that robustly yield these different end point structures will be necessary. Here, we used cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM) to reconstruct fibril polymorphs taken on by residues 297–391 of tau under conditions previously shown to give rise to the core structure found in Alzheimer’s disease (AD). While we were able to reconstitute the AD tau core fold, the proportion of these paired helical filaments (PHFs) was highly variable, and a majority of filaments were composed of PHFs with an additional identical C-shaped protofilament attached near the PHF interface, termed triple helical filaments (THFs). Since the impact of filament layer quaternary structure on the biological properties of tau and other amyloid filaments is not known, the applications for samples of this morphology are presently uncertain. We further demonstrate the variation in the proportion of PHFs and PHF-like fibrils compared to other morphologies as a function of shaking time and AD polymorph-favoring cofactor concentration. This variation in polymorph abundance, even under identical experimental conditions, highlights the variation that can arise both within a lab and in different laboratory settings when reconstituting specific fibril polymorphs in vitro.

Objective: Biophysical models of neural stimulation are a valuable approach to explaining the mechanisms of neuronal recruitment via applied extracellular electric fields. Typically, the applied electric field is estimated via a macroscopic finite element method solution and then applied to cable models as an extracellular voltage source. However, the field resolution is limited by the finite element size (typically 10’s–100’s of times greater than average neuronal cross-section). As a result, induced charges deposited onto anatomically realistic curved membrane interfaces are not taken into consideration. However, these details may alter estimates of the applied electric field and predictions of neural tissue activation. Methods: To estimate microscopic variations of the electric field, data for intra-axonal space segmented from 3D scanning electron microscopy of the mouse brain genu of corpus callosum were used. The boundary element fast multipole method was applied to accurately compute the extracellular solution. Neuronal recruitment was then estimated via an activating function. Results: Taking the physical structure of the arbor into account generally predicts higher values of the activating function. The relative integral 2-norm difference is 90% on average when the entire axonal arbor is present. A large fraction of this difference might be due to the axonal body itself. When an isolated physical axon is considered with all other axons removed, the relative integral 2-norm difference between the single-axon solution and the complete solution is 25% on average. Conclusion: Our result may provide an explanation as to why Deep Brain Stimulation experiments typically predict lower activation thresholds than commonly used FEM/Cable model approaches to predicting neuronal responses to extracellular electrical stimulation. Significance: These results may change methods for bi-domain neural modeling and neural excitation.

Background The robotic approach has vast applications in surgery; however, the utility of robotic gastrectomy has yet to be clearly defined. This study aimed to compare outcomes following robotic gastrectomy at our institution to the national patient-specific predicted outcomes data provided by the American College of Surgeons (ACS) National Surgical Quality Improvement Program (NSQIP).Methods We prospectively studied 73 patients who underwent robotic gastrectomy under our care. ACS NSQIP outcomes after gastrectomy and predicted outcomes for our patients were compared with our actual outcomes utilizing students ttest and chi-square analysis, where applicable. Data are presented as median (mean ± SD).Results Patients were 65 (66 ± 10.7) years old with a BMI of 26 (28 ± 6.5) kg/m2. 35 patients had gastric adenocarcinomas and 22 had gastrointestinal stromal tumors Operative duration was 245 (250 ± 114.7) minutes, estimated blood loss was 50 (83 ± 91.6) mL, and there were no conversions to ‘open’. 1% of patients experienced superficial surgical site infections compared to the NSQIP predicted rate of 10% (P< .05). Length of stay (LOS) was 5 (6 ± 4.2) days vs NSQIP’s predicted LOS of 8 (8 ± 3.2) days (P< .05). Three patients died during their postoperative hospital course (4%), due to multi-system organ failure and cardiac arrest. 1-year, 3-year, and 5-year estimated survival for patients with gastric adenocarcinoma was 76%, 63%, and 63%, respectively.Discussion Robotic gastrectomy yields salutary patient outcomes and optimal survival for varying gastric diseases, particularly gastric adenocarcinoma. Our patients experienced shorter hospital stays and reduced complications relative to patients in NSQIP and predicted outcome for our patients. Gastrectomy undertaken robotically is the future of gastric resection.

ABSTRACTThis article explores how doctoral graduates in Aotearoa New Zealand are being impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. A survey captured the employment and mobility situations of doctoral graduates from 2019 to early 2021 from six of the eight universities in NZ. The 406 survey responses were analysed using descriptive statistics, as well as drawing on Cognitive Information Processing (CIP) theory in an inductive analysis of freeform comments. Most respondents were aspiring to academic careers, but the pandemic led to the loss of job offers for 19.2% and altered career plans for 60.6%. Family circumstances impacted career decisions for 21.4% and these were complicated by mobility difficulties with border closures and visa issues. The impacts of the pandemic on careers were significantly greater for international graduates. The qualitative analysis revealed themes of uncertainty, complications, pragmatism and academia. Using CIP, it is apparent that the pandemic has created a more complex job environment and heightened stress and anxiety over career and mobility options. As shown in our conceptual model, NZ universities need to better prepare graduates for the landscape of career possibilities, making students aware of their attributes, supporting their wellbeing, and helping them navigate the complexity of the current job environment.

Ylidenenorbornadienes (YNDs), prepared by [4 + 2] cycloadditions between fulvenes and acetylene carboxylates, react with thiol nucleophiles to yield mixtures of four to eight diastereomers depending on the symmetry of the YND substrate. The mixtures of diastereomers fragment via a retro-[4 + 2] cycloaddition with a large variation in rate, with half-lives ranging from 16 to 11,000 min at 80 °C. The diastereomer-enriched samples of propane thiol adducts [YND-propanethiol (PTs)] were isolated and identified by nuclear Overhauser effect spectroscopy (NOESY) correlations. Simulated kinetics were used to extrapolate the rate constants of individual diastereomers from the observed rate data, and it correlated well with rate constants measured directly and from isolated diastereomer-enriched samples. The individual diastereomers of a model system fragment at differing rates with half-lives ranging from 5 to 44 min in CDCl3. Density functional theory calculations were performed to investigate the mechanism of fragmentation and support an asynchronous retro-[4 + 2] cycloaddition transition state. The computations generally correlated well with the observed free energies of activation for four diastereomers of the model system as a whole, within 2.6 kcal/mol. However, the observed order of the fragmentation rates across the set of diastereomers deviated from the computational results. YNDs display wide variability in the rate of fragmentation, dependent on the stereoelectronics of the ylidene substituents. A Hammett study showed that the electron-rich aromatic rings attached to the ylidene bridge increase the fragmentation rate, while electron-deficient systems slow fragmentation rates.

Backgrounds and Objectives Up to 50% of patients with colorectal carcinoma (CRC) present with liver metastases (CLM) throughout their course. Complete resection of both sites provides the only chance for cure. Either a staged or simultaneous resection is feasible. The latter avoids delays in adjuvant systemic chemotherapy but may increase technical complexity and perioperative complications. We aim to evaluate our initial outcomes of simultaneous CRC and CLM resections with a focus on the robotic technique.Method With institutional review board approval, we followed 26 consecutive patients who underwent simultaneous/concomitant liver and colorectal resection. Major liver resection is defined as resection of ≥3 contiguous Couinaud segments. Data are presented as median (mean ± SD).Results Patients were 64 (63 ± 14.0) years old. Body mass index was 29 (29 ± 5.7) kg/m2. 54% of patients had prior abdominal operation(s). A majority of patients were >ASA class III (73%), underwent major liver resection (62%) with robotic approach (77%). In the robotic cohort, there were no unplanned conversions to open. Estimated blood loss was 150 (210 ± 181.8) ml. Total operative duration was 446 (463 ± 93.6) minutes. Negative margins (R0) were obtained in all patients. Postoperative complication of Clavien-Dindo≥3 occurred in three patients, including one requiring reoperation with end ileostomy for anastomotic leak. Length of stay was 5 (6 ± 3.5) days. Three patients were readmitted within 30 days after discharge, none for reoperation. There was no 90-day mortality.Conclusion Our cohort of concomitant CRC and CLM resection demonstrates safety and efficacy via both the open and robotic approach.

Monitoring the cochlear nerve during vestibular schwannoma (VS) microsurgery depends on the hearing status and surgical approach. Traditional hearing preservation VS microsurgery relies on acoustically driven auditory brainstem response (ABR) and cochlear nerve action potential. Both modalities have advantages and disadvantages that need to be understood for proper implementation. When hearing is lost or the approach violates the otic capsule, electrically evoked monitoring methods may be used. Evoked ABR (eABR) is feasible and safe but may be limited by artifact. Combining eABR with near-field measures such as electrocochleography or neural telemetry shows promise.

The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted personal protective equipment (PPE) supply, distribution, and disposal issues worldwide. Calls to conserve PPE stocks and increase supply resulted in the rapid development of potential disinfection methods, with the possibility of improvements in medical waste reduction. However, how receptive health-care workers are to PPE reuse remains unknown. We aimed to examine the views of health-care workers who used PPE during the first COVID-19 wave in Aotearoa New Zealand, in relation to acceptability of PPE disinfection and reuse.

IMPORTANCE: In 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic, neurologic involvement was common in children and adolescents hospitalized in the United States for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2)–related complications. OBJECTIVE: To provide an update on the spectrum of SARS-CoV-2–related neurologic involvement among children and adolescents in 2021. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: Case series investigation of patients reported to public health surveillance hospitalized with SARS-CoV-2–related illness between December 15, 2020, and December 31, 2021, in 55 US hospitals in 31 states with follow-up at hospital discharge. A total of 2253 patients were enrolled during the investigation period. Patients suspected of having multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C) who did not meet criteria (n = 85) were excluded. Patients (&lt;21 years) with positive SARS-CoV-2 test results (reverse transcriptase–polymerase chain reaction and/or antibody) meeting criteria for MIS-C or acute COVID-19 were included in the analysis. EXPOSURE: SARS-CoV-2 infection. MAIN OUTCOMES AND MEASURES: Patients with neurologic involvement had acute neurologic signs, symptoms, or diseases on presentation or during hospitalization. Life-threatening neurologic involvement was adjudicated by experts based on clinical and/or neuroradiological features. Type and severity of neurologic involvement, laboratory and imaging data, vaccination status, and hospital discharge outcomes (death or survival with new neurologic deficits). RESULTS: Of 2168 patients included (58% male; median age, 10.3 years), 1435 (66%) met criteria for MIS-C, and 476 (22%) had documented neurologic involvement. Patients with neurologic involvement vs without were older (median age, 12 vs 10 years) and more frequently had underlying neurologic disorders (107 of 476 [22%] vs 240 of 1692 [14%]). Among those with neurologic involvement, 42 (9%) developed acute SARS-CoV-2–related life-threatening conditions, including central nervous system infection/demyelination (n = 23; 15 with possible/confirmed encephalitis, 6 meningitis, 1 transverse myelitis, 1 nonhemorrhagic leukoencephalopathy), stroke (n = 11), severe encephalopathy (n = 5), acute fulminant cerebral edema (n = 2), and Guillain-Barré syndrome (n = 1). Ten of 42 (24%) survived with new neurologic deficits at discharge and 8 (19%) died. Among patients with life-threatening neurologic conditions, 15 of 16 vaccine-eligible patients (94%) were unvaccinated. CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE: SARS-CoV-2–related neurologic involvement persisted in US children and adolescents hospitalized for COVID-19 or MIS-C in 2021 and was again mostly transient. Central nervous system infection/demyelination accounted for a higher proportion of life-threatening conditions, and most vaccine-eligible patients were unvaccinated. COVID-19 vaccination may prevent some SARS-CoV-2–related neurologic complications and merits further study.

This study explored how 18 Student Leaders of Color (SLOC), mostly Black and Latinx students, navigated racial battle fatigue (RBF) as student leaders at a regional master’s comprehensive university in New England and a large public research institution in the Southeast. This study applied RBF as a conceptual framework to explore how SLOC perceived themselves as leaders in a traditionally White higher education environment and made meaning of their racial trauma.

For most of the 20th century, it was possible to regard fertilisation as the identifiable point when life begins, because this moment could be defined unequivocally and was thought to be the single most essential biological step in the establishment of a new human entity. Since the successful reproductive cloning of Dolly and other mammals, it is clear that any human cell has the potential to supply the full genome of an embryo, and hence a person, without going through fertilisation. At what point in time do such embryos acquire the respect accorded to human beings? The authors argue that the time of implantation is the most useful point at which the potential and the intention to create a new person are translated into reality, because from that point a new life develops. Implantation differentiates a somatic cell in culture (which is not due respect) from a human entity that has acquired its own identity and developmental potential. The authors examine the value of quickening or viability as alternative developmental stages in the process of acquiring respect for the Dolly embryo.

Oil spills and industrial oily wastewater discharges have caused serious environmental pollution problems and exacerbated water shortages worldwide. The separation of immiscible oil/water mixtures and oil/water emulsions is of great significance. Among the various technologies, sorption and filtration are considered the most effective and economic. Plant cellulose-based aerogels have attracted considerable attention for the separation of oil/water mixtures and emulsions, due to their wide range and low-cost of raw materials, large specific surface areas, high porosity, and biodegradability. This paper reviews the development of plant cellulose-based aerogels and their applications in the field of oil adsorption and oil/water emulsion separation in recent years. The paper mainly includes the theoretical basis of surface wettability, summary of preparation strategies of plant cellulose-based aerogels, the mechanism of different modification methods and their corresponding advantages and drawbacks. Finally, the current challenges faced by plant cellulose-based aerogels for practical applications are discussed, and potential solutions are recommended for future development.

Kaposiform lymphangiomatosis is an uncommon generalized lymphatic anomaly with distinctive clinical, radiologic, histopathologic, and molecular findings. Herein, we document the pathology in 43 patients evaluated by the Boston Children’s Hospital Vascular Anomalies Center from 1999 to 2020. The most frequent presentations were respiratory difficulty, hemostatic abnormalities, and a soft tissue mass. Imaging commonly revealed involvement of some combination of mediastinal, pulmonary, pleural, and pericardial compartments and most often included spleen and skeleton. Histopathology was characterized by dilated, redundant, and abnormally configured lymphatic channels typically accompanied by dispersed clusters of variably canalized, and often hemosiderotic, spindled lymphatic endothelial cells that were immunopositive for D2-40, PROX1, and CD31. An activating lesional NRASvariant was documented in 9 of 10 patients. The clinical course was typically aggressive, marked by hemorrhage, thrombocytopenia, diminished fibrinogen levels, and a mortality rate of 21%.

No therapies for acute coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) have been tested in children to establish effectiveness. Despite this, across 48 hospitals, 235/424 children (55%) admitted to the intensive care or step-down unit with COVID-19 received directed therapies. Systemic steroids and remdesivir were most commonly administered, with use rising from March 2020 to December 2020.

YNDs display wide variability in rate of fragmentation, dependent on the stereoelectronics of the ylidene substituents. A substrate containing one carboxylic ester proved exceptionally stable to fragmentation.

Ionic liquids are versatile solvents that can be tailored through modification of the cation and anion species. Relatively little is known about the corrosive properties of protic ionic liquids. In this study, we have explored the corrosion of both zinc and copper within a series of protic ionic liquids consisting of alkylammonium or alkanolammonium cations paired with nitrate or carboxylate anions along with three aprotic imidazolium ionic liquids for comparison. Electrochemical studies revealed that the presence of either carboxylate anions or alkanolammonium cations tend to induce a cathodic shift in the corrosion potential. The effect in copper was similar in magnitude for both cations and anions, while the anion effect was slightly more pronounced than that of the cation in the case of zinc. For copper, the presence of carboxylate anions or alkanolammonium cations led to a notable decrease in corrosion current, whereas an increase was typically observed for zinc. The ionic liquid–metal surface interactions were further explored for select protic ionic liquids on copper using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) to characterize the interface. From these studies, the oxide species formed on the surface were identified, and copper speciation at the surface linked to ionic liquid and potential dependent surface passivation. Density functional theory and ab initio molecular dynamics simulations revealed that the ethanolammonium cation was more strongly bound to the copper surface than the ethylammonium counterpart. In addition, the nitrate anion was more tightly bound than the formate anion. These likely lead to competing effects on the process of corrosion: the tightly bound cations act as a source of passivation, whereas the tightly bound anions facilitate the electrodissolution of the copper.

In this review, we examine relationships between empathy, prosocial behavior, and moral judgment. We focus on recent evidence for these relationships, with a focus on motivated empathy regulation as an important process that shapes empathic and moral outcomes. In particular, we highlight tradeoffs in contexts that involve competing victims with different needs, such as in large-scale suffering situations and sacrificial moral dilemmas, as well as on effects on punishment and recursive effects of morality on empathy. Our aim is to integrate motivation frameworks in empathy regulation and social cognition with prosocial and moral judgments.
