Studies of lacustrine carbonate rocks in continental rifts have received huge interest in recent years because of their great economic value in the South Atlantic. However, most existing facies and tectonosedimentary models for carbonate platforms are based on marine carbonate systems, whereas models for nonmarine systems are scarce. The main aim of this paper is to establish such models and to further our understanding of the hydrocarbon-bearing late synrift Lower Cretaceous carbonate successions of the Campos Basin, Brazil. This paper is based on a proximal to distal industrial data set of three-dimensional (3-D) seismic, cores, and well logs from the Coqueiros Formation (Coquina), southern Campos Basin. The dominant carbonate facies in the Coqueiros Formation are mollusk-rich grainstones, rudstones, and floatstones, which form the main reservoir facies. The 3-D seismic interpretations show an oblique extensional rift system, characterized by a series of grabens, half grabens, accommodation zones, and horsts oriented northeast-southwest to north-northeast-south-southwest. Three tectonic domains are recognized based on structural style, stretching factors, and subsidence rates as well as facies and different types of lacustrine carbonate platforms. Proximal rift margin areas are characterized by a series of half grabens with footwall and hanging-wall dip slopes of shallow lacustrine carbonates and fluviodeltaic mixed carbonate and siliciclastic deposits in marginal, hanging-wall basins. Central areas are carbonate rich with platforms established over horst blocks surrounded by deeper-water carbonate facies. Distal areas have the highest amount of stretching and subsidence and accumulate the thickest carbonate successions over a template of buried horsts and grabens. In carbonate rock reservoirs, spatial distribution models and elastic properties are complex because of diagenetic processes and mineralogical composition, which together directly interfere with variations in pore shape and interconnectivity. The main objective of this paper is to propose a workflow to aid in three-dimensional quantitative carbonate reservoir characterization of the Quissama Formation (Macae Group) in the Pampo field of the Campos Basin, offshore Brazil. Model-based seismic inversion, sequential Gaussian simulation with cokriging for porosity modeling, and truncated Gaussian simulation with trend for facies modeling were used to characterize the carbonate reservoirs. Our results show that the carbonate platform is located between the upper Aptian and lower Albian seismic surfaces. Interpretation of a new surface, called the intra-Albian, was possible via acoustic-impedance (AI) analysis. Our workflow facilitated identification of low AI, high porosity, and best facies areas in structural highs where the most productive wells have been drilled. Facies modeling suggests that intercalation of facies with high and low porosities is connected to shallowing-upward cycles. The bidding process is a mechanism that has been widely used by different countries to optimally distribute their oil exploratory acreages. One of the big challenges for both companies and government agencies is the estimation of the block values. Considering that the bid value is by and large a fraction of the estimated unknown reserve, the objective of this article is to reach a set of proxies of unknown values of the blocks through the successful bids. The estimation value of the block is calculated through a stochastic simulation of bid fractions using a compound probability distribution. The model was tested and validated using the public data available from the Brazilian seven licensing rounds. For these competitive bids, areas widespread in 22 sedimentary basins were offered to more than 50 oil companies that retained 610 blocks, paying $1.4 billion as a cash bonus. The model output was restricted to the Campos Basin because it is one of the most attractive areas for oil and gas opportunities, concentrating approximately 80% of the Brazilian national oil production with a supply of 1.8 million bbl/day. The simulation model indicated that this approach can be used as an auxiliary decision framework by oil companies for new investments and bidding strategies as well as by the regulatory agency to evaluate bid performance in different world regions and geological settings possessing similar competitive bidding schemes. The article looks at the re-evaluation of the fatigue life of flexible risers at Petrobras fields in Campos Basin, offshore Brazil in an effort to extend service life. It describes the methodology used to conduct the re-evaluation of fatigue life which relies on determining the stresses in the tensile armour wires of flexible risers. Events that influenced the Santos Basin were different from the Campos Basin to the north (where the bulk of the petroleum reserves in Brazil have been discovered) and resulted in a very different stratigraphy. Because of these differences, the Campos Basin stratigraphic model is poorly suited to the Santos Basin (cf. Cobbold et al., 2001). We divide the postrift stratigraphy of the deep-water Santos Basin into 11 major sequences, each representing an average duration of approximately 11 m.y. and encompassing the middle-Late Cretaceous and Tertiary. The complex fill history of the Santos Basin was strongly influenced by the uplift of the Serra do Mar coastal mountain ranges in the Late Cretaceous and the subsequent organization of the coast-parallel Paraiba do Sul drainage system. The ancestral Paraiba do Sul tended to focus clastic influx into the northern and central Santos Basin during the Late Cretaceous and Paleogene. Focused clastic influx forced massive shelf progradation and deep-water turbidite sedimentation despite globally high-standing sea level. The southern Santos Basin, at the same time, was relatively starved of clastic influx, and drowned shelf conditions prevailed. These depositional patterns persisted until the Oligocene, when the Paraiba do Sul was captured and diverted into the Campos Basin to the north into which it currently empties. After the capture and diversion of the Paraiba do Sul, the north-central Santos Shelf was starved and drowned, and the shelf edge backstepped more than 50 km (30 mi). The southern Santos Basin, in contrast, was buried by a thick sequence of mud-prone upper Oligocene and Neogene sediments that had a great impact on source rock maturity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
