Since the 2016 election of President Donald Trump. conspiracy theories have become more salient among Americans. Using the deep state conspiracy theory QAnon as a case study. we argue three types of conspiracy theory adherents exist due to cognitive dissonance experienced in the face of key theory milestone failures: Hardliners. who do not face cognitive dissonance in response to failed conspiracy theory predictions: Moderates. committed members who experience cognitii'e dissonance and must adapt in order to maintain belief in the conspiracy theory. and Bandwagoners. casual members with shallow beliefs who experience cognitive dissonance and abandon the conspiracy theory. From these types. we put forth the bandwagoner acceleration hypothesis: by eniphasizing the disconnect bem'een complex deep state conspiracy theory beliefs and reality that demonstrates the falsehoods perpetrated by the movement. relevant stakeholders exogenous to the conspiracy theory can activate Bandwagoners to stimulate conspiratorial belief abandonment. In this study we examine complaints concerning electoral fraud and administrative inaccuracies in an old, stable democracy, namely Sweden. We include complaints about the Swedish parliamentary elections between 2010 and 2018. The aim is to examine why voters complain about elections with a mix of qualitative and quantitative data. The results indicate that elections in Sweden are broadly well run and that Sweden has a robust election system. However, the analysis of the complaints show that many of them relate to the handling of advance votes, and that several human errors (administrative inaccuracies) occurred in handling advance votes. The mishandling of advance votes can increase the risk of reducing citizens' confidence in the election process and, by extension, it can pose a risk of magnifying the perceived decline in the legitimacy of the democratic system. This Article is a commentary on Sanford Levinson and Jack M. Balkin's book, Democracy and Dysfunction, written for a symposium on the book that was held to celebrate Constitution Day at Drake University Law School. The book is a superb discussion of the problems facing our republic. My goal in this Article is to place the book within two, distinct scholarly fashion trends. The first is global. Scholars are concerned that long-established, wealthy democracies are facing unprecedented headwinds. The issue is whether that global pessimism is warranted. The second trend is local. We have been disagreeing since the founding over the virtues and vices of formal constitutional change versus evolutionary or incremental change. Professor Levinson argues we need formal constitutional change; Professor Balkin is skeptical of this argument and argues we need evolutionary and incremental reforms. This article asks if Iraq will be able to rule itself following the elections in January. There is a divide in Iraq on the eve of its ready-or-not plunge into democracy: heady optimism on one street, jittery paranoia down another. In a country roiled by insurgency and sectarian tensions, occupied by a foreign army and populated by citizens largely unfamiliar with the democratic process, this is a time of profound uncertainty. The U.S. and the interim Iraqi government are hopeful that at least half the country's 15 million eligible voters will take part in the election, but no one can predict with any certainty what the turnout will be, especially among the disaffected Sunni population. It's highly likely that the vote will be compromised by violence and plagued by Sunni underparticipation, meaning the legitimacy of the new government will be suspect from the start. Given the vows by the insurgents to step up their onslaught, will next week's elections matter? For Iraqis and Americans alike, much depends on whether the new government can prove that it has real authority, bring disenfranchised Sunnis into the political process and quickly establish itself as a credible body willing to work for national reconciliation. Considering the performance of the current government, headed by interim Prime Minister Iyad Allawi, chances that the new leadership can impose order aren't great. If it fails, the country could slide into civil war.
