Klezmer has become an established genre in world music, but its performance is dominated by non-Jewish musicians. Against the backdrop of the 'Jewface' scandal in London's West End, I explore the issue of Jewish representation in klezmer in the British world music industry, examining recurrent trends of cultural appropriation that result in the exclusion and exploitation of Jewish musicians and the exoticisation and erasure of Yiddish culture. Szeged was the main deportation centre for Southern Hungary, in June 1944 three trains departed from here. The first train went to Auschwitz, where most people were killed upon arrival. The second train was uncoupled, half going to Auschwitz. The train's second half and the third transport ended up in Strasshof near Vienna, where most people survived. The setup of these transports resulted in Szeged's Jewry having an exceptionally high survival rate, including children and elderly. Based on the letters of Theodor Hirschberg held in the special collections at the University of Southampton, this article will problematise our understanding of letters as a source for narrative construction. Theodor fled from Berlin to London in 1939 and wrote to various members of his family until 1941. In discussing the biographies of individuals encountered in the collection, the article will note the problems but also the opportunities and nuances of using the epistolary as a source. About 600 young members of the Hashomer Hatzair Zionist-Socialist youth movement who fled from Poland at the beginning of WWII to Lithuanian-controlled Vilna formed a collective group there, a 'Rikuz'. Despite poor physical and material conditions, they led a rich cultural, intellectual, and spiritual life, which they documented intensively. Their detailed first-person ego-documentation consisted of writings and photographs. This unique body of documents survived, brought to Eretz-Israel, and preserved. Interestingly, the unusual story of the Rikuz in Vilna, although exceptional and well documented, was not researched enough nor brought to public attention. The article analyses the documents and discusses the possible reasons for this omission. This reflection stems from an educational journey dedicated to the Jewish Museum in Berlin (1992- 2001), the work of Polish architect Daniel Libeskind. The analysis, which is proposed, interrogates the museum form as a possible agent of a process of citizenship education. Yiddish scholar Zelig Kalmanovich was incarnated in the Vilna Ghetto following Nazi occupation and became a spiritual leader. He developed a philosophy of resistance based on learning from Jewish history and survival through keeping Jewish morals and humanity, engaging in cultural and educational endeavors and by doing so securing Jewish continuity. He rejected the military underground and supported the Judenrat's obedience to the Germans. This is the main reason for Kalmanovich's disregard from the collective history. While the revival of the Torah world among Jewish men after the Holocaust has been studied, the reconstruction of Orthodox Jewish women's society has been given short shrift. This study focuses on Bais Yaakov teachers and their reverence towards their teacher, Sarah Schenirer (1883–1935). Particularly after the Holocaust, Schenirer's legacy became a central concept in rebuilding a social, religious, and educational framework for Ultraorthodox Jewish women. In many ways, the memory of Sarah Schenirer, taken by Ultraorthodox society as representing the entire Jewish world of interwar Europe, served to some extent as a substitute for Holocaust memory. The stark, slanting, raw concrete walls of Landscape of Loss, Memory and Survival, reveal the essential performativity of Canada's new National Holocaust Monument (NHM). Designed by architect Daniel Libeskind and opened in Ottawa in September 2017, the unexpected angles of the monument's towering walls form six triangular "volumes" that constitute a deconstructed and elongated Star of David. Belarie Zatzman frames the NHM's architecture, itself, as the foundation for conceptualizing an applied theatre project as she speculates about what it might mean to respond to the Holocaust from the present, in a specifically Canadian context. She draws on Rothberg's concept of multidirectional memory as an approach for gathering participants' multiple narratives as well as multiple communities' responses to the Shoah. For Zatzman, the promise and challenge of applied theatre lies in the possibility of interacting with history, beyond passively consuming historiographic narratives. Thus, the article asks, how might applied theatre processes help shape our encounter with history and memory at the NHM as a performative, participatory, and pedagogical practice? The "Righteous among Nations" award is the highest Israeli state Award. This high award was posthumously granted to Avdo, Esma, Sabrija and Safeta Prohić from Gračanica, who saved the little Jewish girl Nada Kolman from the Ustashe in 1943. This article explores the challenges Jewish immigrants faced in establishing new lives and livelihoods in the West of Ireland at the end of the nineteenth-century and early twentieth-century. It argues that experiences of settlement by a minority community involved layers of complexity shaped by national interests and local encounters. Negotiating expectations of a nation pursuing political and economic independence raised challenges for Jewish migrants and refugees. This article presents the results of a study of the suffering and fate of the Gračanica Jews during the Second World War in Gračanica. The Jewish community was rather small and suffered heavily under the racist and discriminatory laws of the Ustasha regime. The arrests and deportation of Jews from Gračanica occurred only as late as autumn 1942, in one of the last waves of the persecutions of Jews on the territory of Bosnia and Herzegovina. A total of 8 people from local Jewish families were killed during these measures, while few others escaped to the Italian Occupational zone. A second wave of roundups was planned in early 1943. The Jews that were now targeted were health workers (and their families), who had been spared due to their expertise and lack of experienced staff in their field. In the case of Gračanica they avoided arrest, thanks to some people who were close to the authorities, who helped them to move to a Chetnik-controlled area. A specific case is that of Helena Kolman, who was captured and taken into custody in Zagreb while her daughter Nada was saved by the Prohić family. Other cases were noted where Jews were helped, protected and saved by people from Gračanica, mostly by persons of an antifascist political orientation. Another notable case was that of doctor Schmukler and his a family, a key role in his rescue being played by Ustasha logornik Ibrahim Pjanić (who will later provide the protection for the Jewish doctor Jolanda Rausnic, as well). This article is accompanied by a list of Gračanica's Jews, both domicile and those born in Gračanica, including local Jews that lost their lives in other towns. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

What can physical objects tell us about the Holocaust and the experience of survivors? Studies of Jewish restitution mostly focus on the political debates and negotiations for postwar compensation, as well as institutions and actors involved in these discussions. While individual claimants might be used as examples of particular trends in studies of restitution, we lack a matrix to chart the meaning of individual claims in relation to the overall scope of Jewish reparations. This paper explores the nature of individual property claims in an effort to sketch out a material culture of Jewish loss. Although material culture studies tend to explore how goods reflect everyday life and culture, this paper uses this approach to study the personal, political and socio-economic meanings of wartime theft and postwar restitution. Having operated in Poland from 1914 to 1941, the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee (JDC) returned there in 1945 only to be expelled in 1949 after the Polish Communist government closed down most Jewish institutions. Polish authorities confiscated JDC’s records, subsequently depositing them at the Jewish Historical Institute in Warsaw, where they remain. This article describes the post-Second World War activity of the JDC in Poland, the content of this fugitive collection of more than 520,000 pages of documents, and the efforts the JDC Archives took to reconnect with this material through digitization. This essay examines how the question of the ownership of Jewish cemeteries and synagogues was perceived and negotiated by local officials and bureaucrats during the first decade of communist rule in Poland. Drawing on correspondences between local and state officials and Jewish associations in the early postwar years, it indicates the discrepancy between the central and local authorities’ attitude towards Jewish sites. While Jewish communal property was nationalized and disinherited by the state, on the local level, mainly in provincial towns, Jewish representatives were frequently treated as ‘property owners’ in legal, conceptual, and moral terms. The essay argues that this ‘inability’ of local officials to fully internalize the new status of Jewish sites reflected pre-legal sensibilities and conceptions regarding the ownership issue, which evolved in light of the effects of the Holocaust and its aftermath on the Polish society. Based on Bordwell's conclusions regarding the 1960s European art film as the cinema that “tames” avantgarde and early modernist techniques, such as stream of consciousness, the author of the paper supports the idea that Vatroslav Mimica’s Monday or Tuesday (1966) is a typical representative of such cinematic style. This paper tells two intertwining stories reflecting post-Holocaust power struggles between Jewish communities and organizations and their impact on Holocaust documentation: the efforts to create a Holocaust archive in Yad Vashem from the late 1940s and the hitherto unknown involvement of Israel Kastner in these efforts. Kastner, a controversial leader and activist in Hungary during the Holocaust, was at the apex of a stormy public debate in 1950s Israel (known as the 'Kastner trial') and was murdered in 1957.
