Recycling a book's pages as waste paper was a literary commonplace in Antiquity and the early modern period, a way of imagining literary and physical mortality, but it was also a material practice. This article explores the material and the textual culture of the motif in sixteenth-century France, focusing on the printed page as material object. The underlying preoccupations of the motif – waste, copiousness, and materiality – offer ways of analysing the relationship between the material book and the immaterial text and how Renaissance writers conceived of the book and its recycling. The article examines the function of the hybridity of antebellum story-papers and the serialization of the novel "The Hidden Hand," by Emma Dorothy Eliza Nevitte (E.D.E.N.) Southworth in the story-paper the "Ledger." The novel is said to rely upon the form of the story-paper to disrupt gender norms and national coherence. The plot of the novel is discussed. It is pointed out that the novel espouses contradictory messages about gender normativity and sectionalism.

This paper examines a collection of images of children printed in cancer education and fund-raising materials distributed by voluntary health organizations, released by public relations departments of specialized cancer hospitals, and featured in popular magazines and newspapers beginning in the late 1940s. Children represented only a small fraction of all persons with cancer, yet they became a key component of the media campaign for the disease. What narratives were embedded in the photographs and profiles? Like the March of Dimes' use of young polio patients to promote their programs, "poster children" were strategically used throughout the mid-to-late twentieth century to advance principles of early cancer detection and prompt treatment; to illustrate or, at times, exaggerate promising biomedical advances in the field; and to elicit emotional responses and donations from a wide audience during the escalation of the war against cancer. This article focuses on "Ally Sloper's Half-Holiday," (ASHH) an illustrated comic newspaper published from 1884 to 1923. It states that ASHH remind readers that the late Victorian period was a time of increasing physical mobility. ASHH also invite readers to think of leisure as something done for the sheer fun of doing it. However, the author declares that ASHH instill to its readers a sense of the permeable nature of class boundaries and the irrelevance of these boundaries.

These histories reveal two standards of childhood and education for young men that society judged as being most in need of physical and moral intervention: one for white youths and another for African American youths. This study illustrates the racist assumptions behind these dual standards by examining characteristics of the young men committed to these reformatories, the education they received while incarcerated, and coverage of these institutions by African American and white newspapers. This article explores the sensationalizing of current events to entice and engage the public as readers, audiences, consumers and other concerned and affected citizens in newspapers in Berlin, Germany. The city's newspaper use both hard and soft news to remind readers of the common investment they held in the outcome of national debates while still keeping their minds occupied with life's basic aspects such as weather and social events. The author discusses the implications of the mixture of news and features in newspapers, using the news that appeared in the column "Berlin's Latest" on the November 12, 1919 issue of the newspaper "Berliner Morgenpost," as an example.

The article explores the availability of newspapers and periodicals in separate ladies reading rooms in the British Isles during the period 1850-1914. Research has revealed that by 1914 several local government authorities had adopted the Public Library Acts which provide extra provision for their female readers. Approximately 350 different newspaper and periodical titles were recorded across the facilities. This points to a great variety of individual titles taken by ladies' reading reams.

In social movement organizing, time not only marks events but also structures activist imaginations, practices, and goals. Most political praxis exists in and reproduces linear time, relying on and reproducing an epistemology in which the future follows directly from the present. Despite the necessity of this approach for reducing inequities, it can tether our visions for change to existing categories, state apparatuses, and political repertoires. Drawing from queer, feminist, and critical race theorists, I argue that puncturing temporal linearity in the form of the caesura is a means for catalyzing social justice activism not limited to building on what already exists but allows us to imagine the impossible. Distaff , a feminist newspaper published in New Orleans in the 1970s, offers examples of this political temporality through the poetry and photographs it included, illustrating the caesura's potential temporal ruptures, opening into futures that break radically with the present. This study systematically identifies the Soviet lessons of Vietnam as presented in eleven Soviet newspapers (specialized and regional as well as the central papers) and eight journals. Altogether, 1,585 citations were coded, representing more than 70 different lessons. A predominant finding is that the most common lessons the Soviet Union learned from Vietnam differed from their American counterparts: the Soviet lessons would not have warned the leadership about the dangers of military intervention in Afghanistan. A left/right scale was constructed, based on such issue clusters as why the communists won in Vietnam, the nature of imperialism, and the implications of Soviet policy in the Third World. Substantial variation was found among the media examined, many of which are linked to specific Soviet institutions. The implication is that Soviet foreign policy is contingent upon individual choices, institutional interplay, and changing contexts. This, in turn, suggests that Western policy makers should not lose sight of their capacity to influence the Soviet policy dialogue, and hence Soviet policy choices. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article records how Dickens's celebrity and the print culture of the time caused a trivial item of disinformation about him to achieve brief but widespread currency. In 1868 newspapers carried transcripts of a letter signed "CHARLES DICKENS" which indicated that the writer had determined to donate the proceeds of his next public reading to the Printers' Almshouse charity. Despite a speedy denial in the press by the promoters of the readings, the letter circulated widely in the British, American, New Zealand and Australian press. Several contemporary newspapers commended Dickens's generosity and the aptness of its form, given the importance to his career of the work of printers. The letter is included as genuine in the 2002 Pilgrim Edition of his collected letters. Dickens's attitude towards other inaccurate press stories about him is discussed and the motive for the Printers' charity deception considered in the context of two similar contemporary items of fake news. Private providers and commercial profit are features of today's Swedish welfare society, but the market was already an arena for the production, distribution, and consumption of such services by the early twentieth century. One of the private-sector institutions offering well-to-do parents residential care for their children during restricted periods was the Barnpensionat (children's boarding houses or child hotels). Since these institutions have not been previously studied, the extent and organization of such establishments are unknown. Through analyses of digitalized newspaper material, including advertisements, this article maps the existence and function of barnpensionat in Sweden during the period 1900–1975.
