Abstract

The present work presents a hybrid identification of recursive least squares with a metaheuristic called radial movement optimization (RMO) applied to the joints of a cylindrical robotic manipulator. The main contribution of the research is to consider the covariance matrix with RMO. At the end a comparative analysis will be made with some classic methods. The results of the identifications were tested with the RMSE. A covariance matrix has also been generated from manipulator identifications.

Abstract

Whale Optimization Algorithm (WOA) proposed by Seyedali Mirjalili and Andrew Lewis in 2016 is popular and powerful metaheuristic algorithm to search the global solution of optimization problems. WOA is nature-inspired, metaheuristic (randomization and deterministic) algorithm, which has been widely used to solve various single objective, multi objective and multidimensional optimization problems. WOA and its variant have been introduced in engineering applications, bioinformatics, multi-level image segmentation, clustering applications, design of low pass filter, Email classification, Diabetes classification, heterogeneous networks, machine learning etc. WOA is gradient free, easy to represent, capable to explore, exploit the search space and able to avoid local optima. This paper presents overview of WOA, its variants and applications. The performance of WOA is enhanced by introducing hybridization of other methods with WOA such as WOA-PSO, WOA-Levy, WOA-BAT, WOA-ANN, WOA-SVM etc. Objective of metaheuristic algorithm is tofind best position or leader position X* which is near to optimal solution for target prey over successive iteration. Objective function could be based on minimization or maximization approach.

Abstract

Cloud computing delivers computing resources like software and hardware as a service to the users through a network. Due to the scale of the modern datacentres and their dynamic resources provisioning nature, we need efficient scheduling techniques to manage these resources. The main objective of scheduling is to assign tasks to adequate resources in order to achieve one or more optimization criteria. Scheduling is a challenging issue in the cloud environment, therefore many researchers have attempted to explore an optimal solution for task scheduling in the cloud environment. They have shown that traditional scheduling is not efficient in solving this problem and produce an optimal solution with polynomial time in the cloud environment. However, they introduced sub-optimal solutions within a short period of time. Meta-heuristic techniques have provided near-optimal or optimal solutions within an acceptable time for such problems. In this work, we have introduced the major concepts of resource scheduling and provided a comparative analysis of many task scheduling techniques based on different optimization criteria.

Abstract

In this paper we describe a decentralized protocol that is applied for scheduling and management of energy sharing in heterogeneous systems. Particular system we have in mind comprises of agents with different mobility, energy harvesting and energy sharing capabilities herein called aPads, aFish and aMussels. aPads are surface vehicles that harvest energy and are able to transmit it to both aFishes and aMussels. aFish are underwater vehicles that can transmit energy to aMussels or to other aFish, and receive energy from aPads. aMussels, that can either be attached to the sea-ground or float on the surface, can only receive energy, either from aFish or aPads. For such a system to be able to function for an extended period of time, a decentralized energy management protocol should be designed, whose purpose is to schedule and coordinate charging of agents over time. These decisions depend on the current battery levels of different agents, as well as their positions, and should be done in a decentralized manner. In this paper we apply an energy sharing protocol based on TAEMS framework, originally applied to planning and coordination in aerial-ground robotics systems for search and rescue missions. We refine the obtained plans using the coalition-based metaheuristic for vehicle routing problems. We show execution schedules achieved using the proposed protocol and highlight its advantages and flaws when applied to our underwater scenario.

Abstract

This paper deals with the two-dimensional cutting stock problem with set-up cost 2CSP-S. This problem is composed of three optimisation sub-problems: a 2-D bin packing 2BP problem to place images on patterns, a linear programming LP problem to find for each pattern the number of stock sheets to be printed and a combinatorial problem to find the number of each image on each pattern. We have already developed two different metaheuristics to solve the 2CSP-S focusing on this third sub-problem: a simulated annealing and a genetic algorithm. In this article, we propose to compare these two approaches. It is important to notice that our approaches are not new packing techniques. This work was conducted for a paper industry company and experiments were realised on real and artificial data sets.

Abstract

The Computerized Examination System is an important part in computer aided education, which not only examines the learning outcome of every candidate, but also provides feedback for further improvement. The construction of the computerized examination system is time consuming and requires plenty of domain as well as pedagogy related information. This paper presents an examination sheet optimization based on the improved particle swarm optimization. The results obtained from the study show that the improved particle swarm optimization effectively enhance the effectiveness level of the computerized examination system without the help of the educational experts after a lot of training.

47. A survey on the applications of variable neighborhood search algorithm in healthcare management.

Abstract

This paper reviews the papers on the applications of VNS in the health care area by analyzing the characteristics of VNS in different problems. In the health care field, many complex optimization problems need to be tackled in a short time considering multiple influencing factors, such as personnel preferences, resources limitations, etc. As a metaheuristic, Variable neighborhood search (VNS) algorithm can get an approximate solution for the complex problem in a short time, and has been widely used to deal with the real-world health care optimization problems based on systematic neighborhood changes and perturbation operations when needed. We classify the found papers into five categories based on the topics, i.e., home health care problems, operating room problems, nurse rostering problems, routing optimization problems, and other topics. For each topic, the detailed operations of VNS and the differences in solving various problems have been discussed. In addition, we analyze the studied problems and summarize the approaches used in the literature. The application tendency of VNS in the health care area is also discussed at the end of the paper. Abstract

This paper mainly studies an intelligent test paper generation method based on genetic particle swarm optimization. Firstly, this paper introduces the index system and the constraint condition of the intelligent test paper generation. Moreover, this paper proposes the intelligent test paper generation method that combines an improved adaptive genetic algorithm with particle swarm optimization. In the algorithm, the initial population is generated using the particle swarm optimization by designing proper chromosome coding and then determining the fitness function. Next, new population are obtained by processing the initial population using the genetic algorithm. As a result, operation results are output. At last, this paper analyzes the factors that affect the result of intelligent test paper generation through experimental verification. The research shows that the genetic particle swarm optimization's operation speed is very fast and its operation results are much accurate.

Abstract

In February 2014, we had the honor of organizing the eighth installment of the conference series “Learning and Intelligent Optimization” (LION) in Gainesville, Florida, USA. As always, the work presented was at the forefront of research performed between the fields of Artificial Intelligence, Mathematical Programing and Optimization, and Algorithmic Design. The conference was very successful in attracting researchers from around the world who have been pushing the boundaries in the intersection of the above fields, among others. As has become tradition from the earlier, very successful LION conferences, we are happy to dedicate this special issue to extended versions of a selected sample of the work presented in LION 8 in February 2014. For the remainder of the contributions submitted and presented during LION 8, we refer the interested reader to [1]. The spectrum of the topics covered in this special issue ranges from facility location and routing, to job scheduling and robotics, while the techniques and approaches come from fields as diverse as algorithm portfolio techniques, evolutionary algorithms, and hybrid metaheuristics.
