Public discourse narrative positions Detroit's post-bankruptcy revitalization as a rapid process of business and investment descending upon the city. In spite of this narrative, Detroit today remains a city of intense poverty and inequality. Between 2009 and 2013, an estimated 39 percent of Detroit residents were living below the Federal Poverty Line. This figure renders Detroit as statistically the poorest city in the country. In addition to a mythical narrative of rapid-fire investment, popular media representations of Detroit are peppered with racialized references to white business investment. These references position whiteness as 'saving' Detroit and center whiteness in the urban process. This racialized narrative is false and divisive in a city that is upwards of 83 percent African American. In this paper, we map the disparity between the racial politics of Detroit and the anti-black public discourse narrative currently surrounding the city. We demonstrate that the public discourse valorization of a profit-driven urban process results in an anti-black prioritization of whiteness in Detroit's post-bankruptcy redevelopment process. This narrative, if unchecked, will have serious consequences in the city's present and future. As such, we propose a re-centering of the blackness of the city and the racial politics of generations that have shaped current conditions, toward a more equitable recovery process. Reports that the Thomas McGuane Papers has been acquired by the Michigan State University Libraries at East Lansing.

The article focuses on turning paper ballot system to touch screen voting system in the various states of the U.S. Michigan recently finished cleaning the small number of touch-screens it had in its election system. In 2002, the legislature directed Secretary of State Terri Lynn Land, a Republican, to propose a uniform statewide voting machine system. To boost voter confidence, the Ohio legislature passed a law in May 2004 requiring that counties could use touch-screen machines only if they produced a "voter-verified paper audit trail." But the politics surrounding Ohio's acquisition of touch-screen machines are enough to make anyone suspicious.

Studies of state judicial selection systems require accurate classification of electoral systems. While agreement exists for most states, Ohio and Michigan are difficult to classify. In this paper, we discuss the different practices and explain how, in the absence of candidates’ party affiliation on the ballot, elections in these states may justifiably be classified as partisan. Replicating the results of an important study on participation in judicial elections, we show how the treatment of these states may result in differing substantive conclusions. Lawyers for the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) arrived unannounced at Michigan Tech on the morning of April 3, 2003 and served Joe Nievelt with papers declaring FlatLan, the file-sharing search engine he ran in his dorm room, a haven for trading copyrighted songs. The RIAA wants $150,000 per song. Three others also nabbed in record-industry crackdown on Napster-like download services at college campuses.
