As a result of a request from the City Club of Denver in September, 1924, a study of the newsboys of the city was made by the department of sociology of the University of Denver. The object of the survey was to find the facts, without any preconceived notions, in regard to the newsboys, their ages, nationalities, schools records, incomes, their hours of work, home conditions, delinquencies; the occupations of their parents, their parents attitudes toward their work. The results, while by no means startling, were of sufficient value to warrant their preservation and passing on to other cities. In order to have some basis for study, a schedule was prepared which covered the items mentioned above and several others besides. The work was done by seven students from the department of sociology. Four sources of information were available and the workers were distributed according to the size of the tasks. First, there was the street survey. This included all newsboys under eighteen who sold papers on the streets of Denver. Of course, a few newsboys were missed, but this survey includes all of the regular downtown newsboys who sell in daytime and most of those who sell at night. The next source of information was the homes of the boys. The home visit was prepared for by telling the boy in advance of the workers visit.

This paper describes a short method of computing the intrinsic growth rate which yields more accurate estimates than other methods which have similar information requirements. The procedure is recommended when hand or desk calculation of the intrinsic growth rate is necessary. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper highlights results of the work accomplished in the documentation of facts concerned with migration and the sources of information that have been explored and judged useful for Catholic planning and research. In conformity with the aims assigned to it by the statutes of the International Catholic Migration Commission (I.C.M.C.), the I.C.M.C. Information Centre was created in Geneva, Switzerland in 1952. More than 150 periodicals from different countries, particularly from immigration countries, were received regularly in 1953. The best publications on population matters including different aspects of migration have been written for the Institut National d'Etudes Démographiques by eminent professors and population specialists, both French and of other nationalities. From the Catholic point of view, population problems have been considerably elucidated by the eminent Australian economist, now in Oxford, England Colin Clark. The agricultural problem in Venezuela has also been examined from different point of views in the publications of the Instituto Agrario Nacional. Only a few studies on European emigration from the national and economic angle have been published. A curious sociological fact has been noted in the Netherlands concerning the religious composition of emigration groups.

One English industrial study found that the least successful firms in receiving, evaluating and assimilating fresh ideas were hierarchical, with sharply defined spheres of duty and a largely downward system of communication. The best were less hierarchical, had less sharply-defined spheres of responsibility, had plenty of opportunity for the lateral exchange of views and had communication systems that passed messages upward as well as downward. In 1963 the Bachelor of Education degree (B.Ed,) seemed to many lecturers in universities and colleges of education such an innovative idea. The university subject departments were represented on all groups except the Principals' Panel and the Subject Panels. Participation in policy-making seems to have been limited to the Principals' Panel, the Syllabus Committees and, to a much lesser degree, to the Professional Committee and the BEd. Board of Studies. Power in any organization is determined by possession of resources, and one of the most important of these is information.
